For example, when Zen Mode is activated, it will dim the cabin lights, disperse calming aromatherapy scents and activate massaging seats. BMW 2 Series Next Generation of Its Compact Rear-Wheel Drive-Based Sports Coupes

BMW next generation of its compact rear-wheel drive-based sports coupes, the 2022 BMW 230i and BMW M240i xDrive Coupes. Striking, extroverted styling, more powerful engines, improved chassis and dynamics, greater interior room and the latest in infotainment and connectivity are just some of the improvements that await the new BMW 2 Series Coupe driver. 2 Series Coupe is focused on delivering maximum driving enjoyment, with every component having been optimized for this purpose. More than 55 years ago, the first BMW 1600 arrived with compact dimensions, a sophisticated chassis and a powerful engine. When the 2002 designation was attached to the 2-door body, a legendary automobile was born. One that provided an unequaled driving experience through a carefully balanced combination of engine, chassis, braking and driver-focused cockpit. In 1973, 8

The BMW Controller, gear selector lever, Start/Stop button, Driving Experience Control switch and numerous other function buttons are grouped within a modern-looking control panel in the center console. the 170 hp BMW 2002 Turbo was the first series production European car to feature turbocharging. 2008 saw the arrival of a new sporty rearwheel drive 1 Series Coupe and 2014 was the market launch of the new 1st Generation 2 Series Coupe. Exterior Design The 2nd Generation BMW 230i Coupe is 4.3-inches longer, 2.6-inches wider, 1.0-inch lower and has a 2.0-inch longer wheelbase than the 1st Generation 230i Coupe. The August 2022

new BMW M240i xDrive model is 3.5-inches longer, 2.6-inches wider, 0.1-inch lower and has a 2.0-inch longer wheelbase than the M240i xDrive Coupe it replaces. The new performance-oriented BMW kidney grille features vertically arranged air flaps instead of the classic bars. a single-piece frame in a chrome finish on the BMW 230i Coupe and in cerium grey on the BMW M240i xDrive Coupe. The strikingly contoured headlights - inspired by the legendary BMW 2002 models - each have a single individual circular full-LED headlight. The daytime running lights take the form of U-shaped light guides, with integrated turn signals, at the lower edge of the headlights. Adaptive LED Headlights are optional with the Premium Package. As well as responding to steering angle, their cornering light function can also “look ahead” – using data from the navigation system data – in order to illuminate the road as effectively as possible. The Adaptive LED Headlights can be identified by gold colored accent trim and light guides for the daytime driving light and turn indicators. And the

Adaptive LED Headlights are also available with darkened inlays as part of the Shadowline Package. Pronounced surfaces at the rear of the new BMW 2 Series Coupe produce an appealing interplay of light and shadow effects which enhances the visual power of the car. Like the compact headlights at the front of the car, the contours of the standard darkened rear lights – positioned at the outer extremes of the rear end – embody a more sporting form. Their surfaces are formed by light clusters with threedimensional sculpting. This provides a unique showcase for the LED technology. The rear light bars illuminate to produce a new, downward-ending interpretation of the familiar L shape. They border the pentagonal brake light units at their upper edge and to the side. Horizontal LED light guides below the rear lights serve as turn indicators. A rear bumper

insert finished in matt black and with integral reflectors underscores the sporting look. Power and Performance The new 2 Series Coupe delivers more power and torque, an eight-speed sport automatic transmission with launch control, rear wheel drive or rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive and a completely revised chassis for exceptional performance and a driving experience unequaled in the compact sports coupe segment. The BMW 230i Coupe’s revised 2.0-liter 4-cylinder BMW TwinPower turbo engine produces 255 hp @ 5,000 – 6,500 rpm and 295 lb-ft. of torque @ 1,550 – 4,400 rpm. New Study: Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance Produces +47% Return on Investment for American Businesses Employers in the United States this year will earn an average return on investment (ROI) of 47% from their employer-sponsored health insurance (ESI) programs, according to a new study from Avalere Health. This means for every dollar spent on ESI, employers get back $1.47 in financial benefits. The analysis from the health data firm finds that the average ROI is projected to grow to 52% in 2026, and that businesses that invest more in their ESI programs tend have a higher ROI. Auto Care Association Members Call on Industry to Turn Up the Heat During Right to Repair Awareness Month The United States automotive aftermarket has experienced several victories when it comes to Right to Repair, which secured the consumer's right to choose where they get their vehicle maintained and repaired. This right was secured twice in Massachusetts: first in 2012, resulting in a nationwide Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with automakers for vehicle diagnostic and maintenance data from the OBD, and again in 2020 for wirelessly-generated vehicle data. Contrary to the will of Massachusetts voters, soon after the win in 2020, the automakers filed a lawsuit to overturn this 2020 victory for consumer rights and we are still waiting on a decision from

the judge. As the industry awaits the long-anticipated decision on the Right to Repair court case in Massachusetts, the auto care industry continues the fight for safe and secure access to vehicle maintenance and repair data on the national and international stage. On the federal front, the Auto Care Association has worked to gain support for the REPAIR Act to secure the Right to Repair for all Americans, but time is running out to secure co-sponsors in this Congress. Due to currently competing legislative priorities (supply chain shortages, war, inflation), it is likely the REPAIR Act bill will need to be reintroduced in 2023.

In response to the need to continued momentum and even more engagement on the issue, members of the Auto Care Association’s Marketing and Communications committee are asking for the industry to partake in a “Right to Repair Awareness Month” this July. “It’s critical to engage our 4.4 million brothers and sisters in this battle for independence,” said Bill Hanvey, president and CEO, Auto Care Association. “We must continue a steady drumbeat and add more voices to our story. That’s why this July, we’re launching Right to Repair Awareness Month to ensure that every colleague, peer and coworker knows what Right to Repair is and why they need to get involved.” n

Experts: ADAS Safety Potential Goes Hand in Hand With Consumer Education By Lurah Lowery Tarik Bolat, CEO and co-founder of autonomous driving tech company GPR, wrote in an Automotive News opinion piece that many motorists turn off safety features, such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), because they think they’re not working properly. Bolat also says drivers don’t yet see the safety potential of ADAS and that the systems “as currently designed aren’t working for consumers.” “While the industry works to enhance road safety tech to surpass

the ability of human drivers, it must also change public perception to ensure users are comfortable — and confident — in fully and semi-autonomous systems,” he wrote. “New technologies are enabling manufacturers to move at pace to address critical performance gaps, but consumer education must be brought up to speed to fully unleash the benefits of an autonomous driving future.” CCC Intelligent Solutions also explored this topic and found that “while the growing list of available safety features is sought by over half

of drivers, many have a complicated perception of ADAS and its benefits.” While 84% of drivers feel all ADAS features promote safe driving, 70% disable them, according to CCC. “The reasons behind this vary, ranging from a belief that features were not working properly (41 percent), finding the noises/lights distracting (41 percent), or feeling the technology was not needed (30 percent),” CCC’s 2021 Crash Course Midyear Report states. “The good news is that this is not the case for most as only slightly more than one-third of drivers (38 percent) turn off

features regularly.” A survey of 290 consumers conducted for CCC found that 3 in 5 said they purchased a vehicle with ADAS “to keep me and my family safe.” Despite this, 54% said they believe certain ADAS features can actually increase the chance of an accident. Owners of ADAS-equipped vehicles are willing to pay for repairs of

ADAS features but have high expectations, according to CCC. Seventy-one percent expect their ADAS “to work just as well as it did pre-collision, while one-quarter (24 percent) expect it to be slightly less effective.” This points to the expectation most owners have of repairers to return vehicles to the condition they were in before they were damaged by following OEM repair pro-

ADAS From Page 17 dents — tends to decrease the effectiveness of ADAS. “With traffic moving at higher speeds, ADAS may not be able to avoid a crash altogether.” CCC notes too that the $1.2 trillion federal Infrastructure Investment Jobs Act, among other items, authorizes U.S. DOT to mandate ADAS including forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist in all passenger vehicles. “It also requires the DOT to update its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) to establish performance test criteria for crash avoidance technology; create ratings to assess vehicle safety related to pedestrians and cyclists; and to establish roadmap to regularly update NCAP based on feedback from vehicle safety stakeholders,” CCC says. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chair Jennifer Homendy recently criticized the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)’s NCAP and said it “fails consumers” by not including collision avoidance and other safety technologies in its ratings. In May, a Consumer Reports survey found that 47,000 of its members

who own 2017-2022 model year vehicles “like car safety technology best when it helps them see what they sometimes can’t, such as checking blind spots or obstacles hidden behind their vehicle.” Respondents also favored adaptive cruise control and lane centering assist, especially older drivers. According to Consumer Reports, “newer cars get higher satisfaction ratings, indicating that these systems are improving over time.” While more than half of respondents told Consumer Reports the two features make driving less stressful, Consumer Report Vehicle Technology Manager Kelly Funkhouser said it’s important to understand “they’re designed only to make driving easier.” “Some of these systems work really well at making driving less stressful, so it’s easy to become complacent,” she said in the CR article. “But as soon as drivers let their guard down, something could quickly go wrong with the system. The driver must stay vigilant and in control of the vehicle at all times.” A recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) survey of more than 1,000 drivers focused on lane centering, automated lane changing, and driver monitoring found that consumer

interest is strong but “drivers appear to prefer partially automated features that require them to stay engaged in driving,” according to Alexandra Mueller, the survey’s primary designer. “For example, lane centering and automated lane changing come in ‘hands-free’ versions that allow drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel under certain conditions and ‘hands-on’ versions that require their hands always be on the wheel,” an IIHS news release on the survey results states. “More drivers said they would prefer the hands-on version of the features.” Going back to Bolat’s take on automated technologies, he wrote that he believes “automated vehicles will soon meet consumer needs.” “AVs [autonomous vehicles] of the future hold the potential to surpass human drivers in safety and efficiency. With new, enhanced sensor systems, advanced driver-assistance technology can be an important accelerant of full autonomy. SkillsUSA Championships, Held This Year on June 22-23 in Atlanta SkillsUSA has announced the winners of its annual SkillsUSA Championships, career competition events that showcase the most accomplished career and technical education students in the nation. In the Championships, held this year on June 22-23 in Atlanta, Georgia, high school and college students competed in 107 trade, technical, and leadership fields. Students advanced to the Championships through competitions at the local and state levels with state winners going on to the national stage. Among the automotive fields included in the competition are three directly related to collision repair: Automotive Refinishing Technology, Collision Damage Appraisal, and Collision Repair Technology. In each field, gold, silver, and bronze winners were announced at the high school and college levels. In the Collision Repair Technology field, at the high school level, the gold medal was presented to Seth Christmas of Maple Mountain High School in Spanish Fork, Utah; the silver to Shane Webb of the Vanguard-Sentinel Career & Technology Center in Tiffin, Ohio, and the bronze to Riley Collier of the OCM BOCES I.E. Henry Campus in Syracuse, New York. Hendrick Automotive Group partners with Richmond Community College on Accelerated Training for Automotive Techs Hendrick Automotive Group is partnering with Richmond Community College to build one of the top educational centers in the country for automotive technicians. Hendrick Automotive Group Chairman & CEO Rick Hendrick joined RichmondCC president, Dr. Dale McInnis, to announce plans for the “Hendrick Center for Automotive Training,” a 15,000-square-foot, stateof-the-art facility to be located on the Hamlet, North Carolina campus. The automotive technician program will be modeled after RichmondCC’s Electric Lineman program, which provides a solid foundation of skills and training within a short span of time. Automotive technician students likewise will complete the intense, accelerated program in 16 weeks and be qualified to go to work immediately and begin their careers in the automotive industry. “We have found that an intensive cohort-based, short-term training program that provides students with the skills, knowledge and competencies that employers are desperately seeking in a fraction of the time and fraction of the cost to the students and families,” Dr. McInnis said. The Hendrick Family Foundation is making a $500,000 donation to the development of the educational center. The Richmond Community College Foundation is matching that donation, and the Foundation for the Carolinas is donating $250,000. An additional $3.4 million is needed to support the development of the program. Sen. USA Skills From 25 Neri said this was the first year that students were judged on the application of UV primer, which had been offered as a demonstration event in 2019. Although “we were all a little nervous” about how that aspect of the competition might go, “we were blown away by how well the students did,” she said. Though the field of competitors, usually numbering in the 70s, was down to 54 this year, Neri said, “every single one of those 54 students did a great job on UV primer.” With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the competition to be canceled in 2019 and held virtually last year, organizers faced their share of challenges in resuming the championship in a new venue, Neri said. Thanks to “our instructors, and the community who are passionate about teaching students what they need to know to be successful in this industry,” the competition “went spectacularly,” she said. In the Collision Damage Appraisal field, at the high school level, the gold medal went to Landen Rex of Lehigh Career & Technical Institute in Schnecksville, Pennsylvania; the silver to Alexandra Drew of the EHOVE Career Center in Milan, Ohio, and

the bronze to Jesse Manuel of Aims Community College-Windsor of Greeley, Colorado. At the college level, the gold medal was awarded to Jamie Frey of Aims Community CollegeWindsor in Greeley, Colorado; the silver to Andrew J Harmes of Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the bronze to Jakob Shiner of Metropolitan Community College of Omaha, Nebraska. SkillsUSA national officer Christopher Anderson addressed the crowd at the start of the ceremony, saying he had been “inspired and encouraged by each of you this week.” “We overcame a lot to be here in person today,” Anderson said. “We’ve gone from participating in conferences virtually to competing face to face with competitors from all across the country. We’ve seen advisors and members engage with our competitors and strive for success. This has given me a renewed strength of sense for the future American workforce. to honor the national medallion recipients,” he said. “We are excited to see what you can all can do to bring to the future of the career and technical education fields.” Among those in attendance were U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona and Assistant Secretary Amy Lloyd, who sent Neri an email after the event. “I so enjoyed talking with you at SkillsUSA – and the following morning, I shared how impressed I am by your lived experience, exemplifying what we seek for all our students, in my remarks at the Call to Action Forum with Advisors,” Lloyd wrote. “I really appreciate all you’re doing for supporting the education and skills of our next generations.” Closing the event, national officer Caroline Daley congratulated the competitors and thanked the many sponsors who make the event possible. “Everything that we’ve accomplished at this conference was possible because we worked as one united. I witnessed this unity at every event, every competition. Even tonight, as I watched champions celebrate and cheer each other on,” Daley said. “You’ve shown yourselves to be champions throughout this whole conference – heck, throughout the whole year. I’ve been utterly amazed by all of you,” she said.n

NADA Responds to FTC’s Proposed Vehicle Pricing, Advertising Rule NADA President and CEO Mike Stanton on Thursday released the following statement in response to the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) proposed rule affecting franchised auto dealers: “The FTC’s proposed rule would impose a vast array of new, completely unwarranted, redundant and ineffectual requirements that will cause great harm to consumers by increasing prices, extending transaction times, and making the customer Insurance From Page 10 lights the manufacturing industry as an example, finding American manufacturers see an ROI of 42% on their ESI programs.
