Concept i4 From Cover door Gran Coupe – all while generating zero local emissions. “The BMW Concept i4 brings electrification to the core of the BMW brand,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “The design is dynamic, clean and elegant. In short: a perfect BMW that happens to be zero emission.” The drivetrain’s standout numbers include an estimated EPA range of 270 miles / WLTP range of 600 km. However, the driving qualities of the BMW Concept i4 cannot be expressed in figures alone. The virtually silent delivery of power creates an entirely new sensation of dynamism. “The design of the BMW Concept i4 shows fantastic proportions, a powerfully expressive character and, of course, a lot of attention to detail,” adds Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design. “With the BMW Curved Display, we have redefined BMW’s signature driver focus in an extremely elegant way. At the same time, the BMW Concept i4 transports a feeling of sustainable driving pleasure.” As part of the package, the Concept i4 includes several exterior and interior design elements which will make an appearance in both the BMW i4

and other electrically-powered production vehicles. The modern, elegant exterior represents a deliberate counterpoint to the dynamic flair of the driving experience. The perfectly resolved Gran Coupe proportions create an authentic, modern and confident appearance. The long wheelbase, fastback roofline and short overhangs form a basic profile brimming with elegance and dynamism. With its four doors, the BMW Concept i4 offers not only a high level of everyday usability and practicality, but also a much larger interior than the car’s modern and dynamic proportions would immediately suggest. Clear surfaces and aerodynamic details. Crisp, smooth lines and taut volumes merge into a rich, smoothly contoured sculpture and create a clear surfacing language. The modern exterior paint shade Frozen Light Copper reprises a colour nuance displayed by the BMW Vision iNEXT and showcases the interplay of surfaces to visually stunning effect. the signature BMW i icons and bring the technology below the surface to the fore – for example, the kidneys in their role as an intelligence panel, the mouldings in the side skirts concealing the battery technology, and the diffuser elements in the rear end, which fill the design space vacated by exhaust tailpipes and enhance aerodynamic efficiency. A host of other aerodynamic measures maximise the car’s electric range. The blanked off kidney grille and clear aero lips provide detail examples of sophisticated airflow engineering at work. Another distinctive area of the car are the wheel rims. These have been designed exclusively for the BMW Concept i4 and blend aerodynamic and lightweight design; smooth – and therefore aerodynamically optimised – surfaces contrast with ultra-low-weight, highstrength spokes. The rims extend the car’s palette of colours and materials, emphasising its luxurious overall character. The front end – the eyecatching face of a new era. The front-end treatment of the BMW Concept i4 presents the familiar BMW icons in a new look, lending a visuwww.IneedOEMparts.com

ally powerful face to the electric age at BMW. The prominent, closed-off kidney grille provides a tangible connection between the past and future of BMW. The BMW icon also gains new functionality: With no combustion engine to require cooling, the grille now serves primarily as an “intelligence panel” housing various sensors. The grille teases the technology behind the scenes with a special design for this model. The headlights likewise provide a bridge between the past and the future; the classical four-eyed front end is reprised here with a very modern and paredback interpretation. Two intricate, freestanding LED elements on either side integrate all of the requisite light functions. Clean surfaces and a small number of crisp lines around the grille create a contemporary front-end graphic with considerable visual impact. A BMW i-style blue accent in the grille surround sets the seal on the front-end styling. The interior – innovation meets minimalism. The interior of the BMW Concept i4 focuses on those times when the driver chooses to pilot the car themselves. To this end, every element in the front of the cabin is trained on the driver. The new BMW Curved Display teams up with the steering wheel to reveal a new take on driver orientation and offers a look ahead to the display in the production versions of the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4. Here, the presentation surfaces of the information display and Control Display merge into a single unit inclined towards the driver. This screen grouping

optimises presentation of information and makes the display’s touch operation more intuitive. Advanced display tech with non-reflective glass also removes the need for a shroud to shade the displays and therefore contributes to an extremely uncluttered and airy cockpit. The BMW Curved Display encompasses a large proportion of the section in front of the driver and above the centre stack, and gives the front area a very modern appearance. Its slim, borderless form exudes quality and sophistication. Almost all operating functions are integrated into the display as part of an overall approach centred on reducing the number of haptic controls to the minimum. Even the climate control system now works by touch control. Further developed user interface design with Experience Modes. The screen grouping with new BMW Curved Display provides a digital gateway into the electric age at BMW. Look and feel are clearly influenced by the latest electronic devices and have been made deliberately less “automotive” in nature. In the display itself, flat layers provide considerable visual depth. Overall, the BMW Curved Display and new presentation approach combine to provide a first-class content-viewing experience. Three different Experience Modes enable users to explore the various facets of the electric drive system and provide a look ahead – in terms of visuals at least – to the next-generation operating system from 2021. The sometimes emphasised visual differentiation

between the three Experience Modes (“Core”, “Sport” and “Efficient”) spans everything from how the user experiences the display and graphics to how the interior is presented. Ambient lighting in the dashboard, doors and (indirectly) below the display indicate the technical adjustments taking place. “Core” mode introduces the driver’s area to an updated interpretation of the four “widgets” familiar from the display concept of existing models. Here, the graphics reprise the pattern above the air vents and the Gold Bronze accent colour, consciously referencing the car’s interior design. In the area where the central display used to be positioned, a map and widgets now line up alongside one another. The user can navigate around the diagonal widgets using a swipe movement and arrange them intuitively by drag-and-drop. This allows them to adapt the display to their personal preferences. In “Sport” mode, the “widgets” come closer together and create a focussed view. Sideways movements behind the zones are used to show how tight the next corner is, facilitating anticipatory driving. This form of content presentation also allows effective peripheral viewing. The right-hand area of the display shows specific functions in a similar way to BMW M’s lap timer app. “Efficient” mode debuts an “Assisted Driving View”, which shows the driver what the car’s sensors are

John Mosley and Two New Members Elected to SCRS Board Voters on selected one incumbent and two newcomers to serve the auto body repair industry on the Society of Collision Repair Specialists board for the next three years. Board member Amber Alley, general manager of Barsotti’s Body and Fender (California); Tony Adams, owner of Weaver’s Collision Center (Kansas); and John Mosley, owner of Clinton Body Shop (Mississippi), claimed the three board seats up for election. Alley told an SCRS virtual open board meeting Monday that from a personal perspective, her time on the board was an “amazing experience” and “probably one of the best things professionally I’ve been part of.” Professionally, she called it “really exciting coming together with people who are so passionate” about items “you deal with on a daily basis.” She said it’s been nice to see the results of her past five years of work and she would “just like to continue to be part of that.” Noting that he spent elementary school summers at his father’s auto body shop, Adams on Monday called it “really awesome” to watch the segment grow from an “industry of roughnecks” in the 1980s to the “levels of professionals” found in 2020. Adams, the vice president of the Kansas Auto Body Association, said he had a “passion for serving.” He said he wanted to join the SCRS board to advocate and teach “an industry that I’m very passionate about.” Adams also noted his experience as both a direct repair program and non-DRP facility and said he understood the “benefits and risks” of both business models. (Currently, he holds no insurance affiliations). He said he felt he “would be a good advocate for our industry.” Mosley said he owns an aircraft refinishing facility as well as two body shops, but “my heart is in the collision repair industry.” He said he wants to help promote SCRS, which was “promoting the interest and the welfare” of the auto body repair segment, and help everyone dependent on the industry make a living. He

noted that he’d traveled to Washington to advocate on issues. “If you vote me in, I’ll go to work,” Mosley said, promising to be among the “hardest-working guys you ever ran into.”Adams, Alley and Mosley defeated incumbent Trace Coccimiglio, owner of Valet Auto Body (Utah); and Josh McFarlin, vice president for strategic business operations at AirPro Diagnostics (Florida). “The board extends our sincere appreciation to our outgoing board member, Trace Coccimiglio, for his commitment and the energy he’s brought to the conversations over the past three years,” SCRS Chairman Brett Bailey (A&B) said in a statement Wednesday. “This board becomes a lot like a family, and it’s always exciting to see that family grow, but it’s not without a pause of appreciation for all those who’ve invested their time and their hearts into the work around the table. It’s our sincere hope that we see his return to the board in the future.” “I have learned so much from being a part of this organization,” Coccimiglio said in a statement Wednesday. “The people behind SCRS are truly what make it such a special organization within this

industry. They care more than most will ever know, and I’ve gained so much just from being a part of the process. I know the good work that SCRS has done, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to be a part of.” Bailey (A&B) on called the field “five outstanding candidates,” each of which would have brought an “off the charts” wealth of knowledge to the board. McFarlin had sought the SCRS board in 2019 during his time at his previous employer I-CAR. Alley observed Monday that she didn’t win her first board election in 2015, and SCRS Executive Director Aaron Schulenburg called initial election defeat a common experience for candidates ultimately voted to SCRS’ governing body. “Persistence is key,” he said. SCRS also on Wednesday announced that its leadership would retain their current roles: Bailey as chairman; Bruce Halcro, owner of Capital Collision Center (Mont.) as vice chairman; Alley as secretary; and AkzoNobel senior services consultant Tim Ronak (Calif.) as treasurer. Nylund’s Collision Center owner Rob Grieve (Colo.) was elected director at large.n www.IneedOEMparts.com

CCC Reports Strong Industry Adoption of Parts eCommerce and Marketing Capabilities CCC Information Services Inc. (CCC) announces significant growth in the adoption of its parts eCommerce and marketing capabilities, signaling a shift in how collision parts are promoted and purchased within the industry. The volume of electronic parts orders through its system by collision repairers has grown nearly 20x over four years. The company also reports that daily live parts quotes delivered by participating CCCÂŽ Parts Network suppliers grew from 12 million to 20 million year over year. The CCC Parts Network connects a dynamic community of collision parts buyers and sellers using a single platform, improving sales, and delivering efficiencies for everyone involved. CCC processes 24 million auto repair estimates and $13 billion in parts annually. "With CCC, we can connect with suppliers and purchase parts without needing to visit multiple websites or manually reconcile invoices," said Toan Nguyen, CEO, Classic

Collision. "For as long as I've been in business, parts ordering has been cumbersome and time-consuming. Too many phone calls, faxes, and emails. CCC's technology stands out for its seamless integration into our estimating workflow. One system, one process, beginning to end." Automotive dealer participation in the CCC Parts Network has grown 50 percent year-over-year and a majority of automakers now use CCC's promotional parts offering.

"As the industry experiences some uncertainty, wholesale parts sales have taken center stage," said Robert Troub, Wholesale Parts Manager, Zeigler Automotive of Orland Park. "CCC has the industry's most comprehensive solution, allowing us to present our parts, availability, and promotional pricing at the point of decision. This eliminates unnecessary back and forth, which slows down a process that requires expediency. We have realized tremendous value using CCC." Beyond seamless connections, CCC offers network participants a unique suite of tools that support real-time parts quoting, upfront promotional pricing, integrated parts ordering, invoice and rebate processing, and analytics. Capabilities are integrated to create a single continuous workflow, increasing part visibility as estimates are being written, delivering efficiency, and offering supeCommerce Please Turn To Page 14

North Carolina To Allow Digital Processing of Total Loss Titles

IAA and Dealertrack expand strategic agreement, bringing speed and efficiency to title delivery for the entire auto industry eliminating notarization requirements." Even before the coronavirus pandemic forced many dealerships, DMVs and auctions to operate with fewer staff and social distancing, total loss title processing could take 8-10 weeks. The delay to transfer ownership of a total loss vehicle stalls cash flow for insurance companies, dealers and other downstream players who derive value from fixing, parting out or recycling salvaged vehicles. The new law paves the way for digital processing of total loss titles in North Carolina, which can now be done via an enhanced strategic agreement between IAA, Inc. (NYSE: IAA) and Dealertrack Registration and Title Solutions. IAA is a leading global marketplace connecting vehicle buyers and sellers. Dealertrack's Registration and Title Solutions expedite back office workflow

The General Assembly of North Carolina has amended its laws governing the title transfer of salvage vehicles by removing notary requirements, permitting electronic signatures and allowing access to division of motor vehicle systems. Prompted by the global health crisis, the amendment, due to be signed into law in mid-July, marks a new milestone in that half of the states in the U.S. would officially be eligible to transfer total loss titles digitally. "With the passage of HB 337 (Regular Session 2019), North Carolina became the 25th state to enable electronic salvage title processing," said Sarah Hunsicker, Director of Government Affairs for Dealertrack Registration and Title Solutions. "Additionally, North Carolina has taken further steps to streamline the transfer of a total loss vehicle, including permitting electronic signatures and

and improve deal efficiency. The companies' combined technologies allow for the transfer of information between the parties necessary to the total loss title transfer, which can cut the timeframe down to as little as one week and free up crucial cash flow. IAA's Loan Payoff™ allows insurance companies and automotive lenders to digitally connect to address negative equity liens. It then issues a letter of guarantee, resulting in accelerating the total loss settlement and lien payoff process. "When a total loss occurs, generally the consumer is made whole at the beginning of the claims process on the value of the vehicle," explained Tim O'Day, president of U.S. operations for IAA. "The creation of value and healthy revenue from that asset then falls on Digital Please Turn To Page 12

translate to more stable insurance premiums to consumers. Based on internal analysis and interactions with multiple insurance providers, IAA estimates that there are more than five million cars declared a total loss each year and approximately 60 to 70 percent of those vehicles have loans which require payoff prior to the clear transfer of title.1 Based on the average price for cars declared total losses, delays in the loan payoff and title transfer pro-

insurance companies, dealerships and a whole eco-system of affiliated businesses. Enabling the process to work digitally speeds up the flow of value from one party to the next, which in turn benefits the entire auto eco-system." In a vehicle claim, moving the title faster decreases the cycle time to sell a total loss vehicle, which means better value to the involved parties, and can

cesses can tie up billions of dollars and slow consumers from returning to the auto retail market to purchase their next vehicle. "If there is a silver lining to be found for our industry during the upheaval caused by the national health crisis, it has been the spur to digital adoption," said Kaitlin Gavin, vice president of operations, Dealertrack Registration and Title Solutions. "We've progressed years in terms of applying available technology to total loss titling in just weeks' time."n

Anest Iwata Joins Sherwin-Williams® Automotive Finishes & Larsen Motorsports Partnership in Support of the Blazing Trails Scholarship Program Sherwin-Williams® Automotive Finishes partnered with Larsen Motorsports (LMS) in 2019 and established the Blazing Trails Scholarship Fund (Blazing Trails, a 501(c)3) addressing the talent shortage facing the collision repair industry by providing financial aid to prospective automotive technicians. Anest Iwata now joins the partnership to support the scholarship fund and build on its outreach effort to post-secondary education institutions with automotive service and collision repair and refinish programs. Anest Iwata, a leading manufacturer of engineered solutions for air compressors, vacuum pumps, spray and finishing equipment headquartered in Cincinnati, will provide scholarship recipients with spray guns to use while

in school and after graduation when employed in the shop. “We’re thrilled to be a part of the Blazing Trails Scholarship Fund and not only support the industry’s effort to recruit talent, but be able to work directly with the schools and the educators, and help train future techs and painters on how to properly use our equipment and perfect their craft,” says Nicolle LouAllen, Director of Marketing, Anest Iwata. Anest Iwata’s partnership began just in time to award the first Blazing Trails Scholarship Fund winner this year – Nicole Turner. Turner, 28 years old, is attending Florida Tech in Eustis, Florida for auto body finishes. A Blazing Trails Scholarship Fund winner, she not only received a scholarship including a full year of tuition, but also four Anest Iwata spray guns.

“Ensuring students have the proper equipment and tools required to start their career is imperative to their success,” says LouAllen. “Nowadays students need access to state-of-the-art tools and professional instruction found in a college or vocational school, as well as the additional support and assistance from the industry in companies like us, and Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes and Larsen Motorsports.” Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes and Larsen Motorsports announced the scholarship fund at last year’s SEMA Show and auctioned off 33 one-of-a-kind art panels custom airbrushed and pinstriped by some of the industry’s most well-known painters Scholarship Please Turn to Page 34

CIC Sees Support for Auto Body Repair Data Protection ‘Golden Rules’ By John Huetter The Collision Industry Conference Vehicle Data Access, Privacy & Security Committee on Thursday proposed five “Golden Rules” aimed at keeping auto body repair information from reaching unwanted sources. Society of Collision Repair Specialists Executive Director Aaron Schulenburg, whose organization has sought to pinpoint the source of leaks to CARFAX, said during the virtual CIC Thursday that the rules could be a “best practices stated expectation of what end users can expect of their vendor partners.” Schulenburg noted that the issue of data reaching vehicle history companies “truly negatively impacts almost every entity within this industry, with maybe the exception of the VIN reporting companies themselves.” A crash appearing on a vehicle history report certainly poses the same risk of a dissatisfied customer to insurers and the OEMs playing a greater role in the collision process as it does to a body shop. Schulenburg said the leaks affect everyone in the collision ecosystem engaged in electronic commerce and tarnish “good work that’s being done by good companies who are trying to do the right thing” by leaving end users mistrustful of doing business digitally. Schulenburg said his hope is that the Golden Rules foster an industry of business partners who can adopt them and say “‘my end users can hold me accountable to these Golden Rules.'” Speaking on behalf of auto body shops, he said none of the rules seemed to constitute an unreasonable expectation, and they represented something “many of the end users have been asking for for quite some time.” First-party companies and thirdparty vendors might need to adopt prac-

The draft “Golden Rules” presented by Committee Co-Chairman Trent Tinsley state: #1: Only use end-users’ data for the service(s) they intended for it to be used; never collect or use their data against them, or for business purposes other than those expressly intended and permitted. #2: Always provide the end-user clarity, transparency, and continuing education on the data you collect, the business purposes for which it is being used. #3: Never misappropriate end users’ data, or knowingly allow any third parties to covertly, dishonestly or unfairly access or take data generated by the end-user, for their own use. #4: Give end-users the choice to determine what data is and isn’t shared, and the opportunity to opt-out of data collection outside of the primary intended purpose. #5: Provide end-users with a clearly published, straightforward process to inquire about data that has been acquired from their business and the immediate chain of custody that data has encountered. (Minor formatting edits.) tices along these lines anyway to do business in states with privacy statues like California Consumer Privacy Act., which applies to anyone doing more than $25 million in sales or accessing at least 50,000 Californians’ personal information. Tinsley (Entegral) said the rules are designed to tie together to ensure a company is acting as a “proper steward.” An informal poll of the CIC audience Thursday found 83 percent of an unspecified audience supportive of CIC considering adopting the rules at the November meeting. 14 percent abstained, and 3 percent said no. Tinsley said the committee wants the industry to provide feedback ahead of the November meeting. Rules Nos. 3 and 5 are noteworthy in that repairers, insurers and others need to be able to trust and verify parties downstream of their immediate vendors as well. As Tinsley put it when discussing Rule 5, “is there anyone else that has access to that

data?”

plier insights to inform parts-related decisions. CCC integrates with leading DMS providers. "The CCC solution is central to our parts strategy," said John Lancaster, National Wholesale Parts Manager, Subaru of America, Inc. "The platform's dynamic workflow solutions automatically present our parts for applicable estimates directly within the esti-

mating application, resulting in improved parts-ordering and rebate processing efficiency." Added Andreas Hecht, GM, senior vice president, OEM services group, CCC: "The strong growth of our parts business and rapid adoption of our solutions by automakers and their wholesale dealers suggests we've entered into a new era of parts sales and management. By integrating and automat-

ing the parts marketing and sales processes, users realize fewer parts returned, shorter cycle times, and increased sales. We're proud to help the industry advance and are excited to connect even more parties to our network." Consider this scenario: Acme Parts Procurement Software has committed not to sell your customers’data to vehicle history companies, telemarketers, identity thieves, etc. But in the normal course of doing business, it in good faith digitally transmits your customer’s VIN and your shop’s request for a new quarter panel to local dealerships to see if they have one in stock. One dealership deduces the vehicle probably was in a wreck and sells the VIN to a vehicle history company. See the problem? Thus, it might be worth going a step further and verifying that your business partners demand similar Golden Rule compliance from their own downstream entities. For example, PartsTrader last month confirmed that its terms of use forbids vendors who bid on parts requests from sharing that information with history sites. n Reprinted Contented: Copyright © 2020. 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Adds More Aggressive-Styling

For the first time, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine is available on top trims, and all-wheel drive is available with both the turbocharged four-cylinder and VR6 engines.

The 2021 Atlas hosts the latest driver assistance technologies offered by Volkswagen. The next-generation Car-Net® telematics system is standard on all models, and in-car Wi-Fi capability is offered across the lineup when you subscribe to a data plan. Additionally, Traffic Jam Assist and Dynamic Road Sign Display are now available. The Atlas is available in eight trim levels for the 2021 model year —S, SE, SE w/ Technology, SE w/ Technology R-Line, SEL, SEL R-Line (sold order only), SEL Premium and SEL Premium R-Line (sold order only). For the first time, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine is available on top trims, and all-wheel drive is available with both the turbocharged four-cylinder and VR6 engines. The starting MSRP for the refreshed Volkswagen Atlas 2.0-liter is unchanged from 2020 at $31,545 for the S model; 4Motion® models start at $33,445 with that same engine, lowering the entry price of AWD by $1,300 compared to the 2020 Atlas which only offered AWD on V6 models . The powerful VR6 engine is available on the Atlas SE w/ Technology package and above, starting at $38,295. The destina-

tion charge for all Atlas models is an additional $1,020. The refreshed Atlas maintains the same underpinnings of the successful outgoing model, and Mirroring the Atlas Cross Sport front fascia, a bold three-bar grille extends into the front light signature, creating a more sophisticated presence, while new headlight and taillight designs feature standard full-LED lighting, including low beams, high beams, turn signal indicators, Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), and taillights. SEL and SEL Premium models add standard 900-lumen LED headlights with Volkswagen’s Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS). Automatic headlamps and rain-sensing windshield wipers are standard across the lineup. Engineered from Volkswagen’s award-winning Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) architecture, the refreshed 2021 Atlas is larger than any other vehicle in the Volkswagen portfolio, sitting 200.7 inches long, 78.4 inches wide,

and 70.1 inches high. Though its overall height remains the same as the 2020 Atlas, the refreshed Atlas is 2.4 inches longer than before, thanks to restyled front and rear bumpers. Despite its size, the Atlas still offers a low coefficient of drag of 0.34. Overhead, roof rails are standard—black on entry-level trims, and silver on SEL and SEL Premium models. A large panoramic sunroof, measuring about 4.5 feet by 3 feet, with a two-part glass opening system and powered sunshade, is available on SE w/ Technology models and standard on SEL and SEL Premium models. The sportier R-Line® trims add R-Line badging; unique front and rear bumpers—also restyled for 2021—that incorporate stylish air intakes at the front and a diffusor in glossy black paint at the rear, as well as side skirts, emphasizing the premium profile of the Atlas. Audi Tech Talk Looks at Not All Collision Repair is the Same ciate, NSU fully merged into Audi in 1985 and gave its “Vorsprung durch Technik” ("lead through technology") tagline to the brand along the way. Allen took his passion for the brand to work with him and the Audi Authorized Collision Repair team. Their work often flies under the radar but is most certainly felt throughout the company. The team gets involved in vehicles as initial design and engineering and continues developing repair processes deep into the model cycles of various vehicles, including pre- and post-crash testing. It works with dealer development, more than 200 certified repair centers in the U.S. and Canada, developing special tools and training, academy training for up to 500 body repair specialists a year, insurer relations, customer relations, parts pricing, support of all Audi Sport Customer Racing servicing and repair initiatives in the U.S. and works with government relations. “During repair method development, all of the important areas of what the program is about are involved. The

In the not-so-distant, not socially distant past, Mark Allen picked up a corner of a bare Audi R8 space frame with one hand in front of a group of 40 insurance claims adjusters from all over the U.S. “This is T6 aerospace-grade aluminum, which is actually stronger than military-grade aluminum,” he said. On this day at the nondescript Audi Training Center in Ashburn, Virginia, Allen showed the claims adjusters how Audi repairs vehicles differently—and why. To much of the automotive industry, Allen and his four-person team are a silent force of advocacy and action, training and the pursuit of perfection. They are staunch advocates for quality and safety. “When I present to insurance companies they often ask why don’t manufacturers all fix their cars the same way and why do we require specialized equipment,” Allen said. “I answer a question with a question: I ask if they have ever done the drop the egg from the top of the school experi-

ment. Many raise their hands. I ask if everyone answered the challenge by building their protection cells the same way. They all look at me quizzically and then exclaim “No!” as if there was something wrong. My point to them is that auto manufacturers meet the challenge of creating stunning, quality, fuel-efficient, fun-to-drive vehicles by their own corporate style and design philosophies. “The end result is success to their customers, but they all answer very differently. Audi is a balance of style, efficiency, performance, capability, luxury and technology that many aspire to but don’t combine in the same perfect proportions.”Allen leads Audi’s collision repair initiatives and has been exposed to the Audi brand for nearly 50 years in various capacities, first seeing it when his father began testing Wankel rotary-powered NSU Ro80 sedans at the Curtiss-Wright company in the early 1970s. That’s when the aerospace firm earned the U.S. patent rights to the technology. As Audi enthusiasts appre-

repairs on advanced materials and vehicle systems are the ultimate gamble. We provide a repeatable outcome.” A longtime board member of I-CAR (Inter-Industry Conference on Automotive Collision and Repair), the standards organization for car repair in North America, Audi is able to share its insights with mixed materials construction—steel, aluminum, carbon fiber, polymers and various adhesives—with other members. Some automakers launching certified repair programs or newly working with aluminum and exotic materials have consulted and continue to consult with Audi on best practices. Audi began selling aluminum-intensive vehicles in the U.S. with the 1997 A8 sedan and continues today with the A8, TT sports car and R8 supercar, among others. More than half of Audi’s approximately 200 certified repair facilities are capable of repairing aluminumintensive vehicles, with more than 400 technicians trained to DIN ISO 9606-2 welding certification standards. Ninetyseven percent of Audi’s facilities meet I-CAR Gold Class standards, the organization’s highest rating. For its repair certification, Audi requires an investment in a number of specialized tools, regular facilities audits and training that can take up to two weeks in Ashburn. It is far more rigorous than your average vocational training, including difficult riveting

techniques and aluminum welding. “Think more along the specialization of what it takes to repair an airliner or our Audi racecars.” The goal isn’t difficulty for the sake of it. Rather, the training is designed to help ensure customers’ peace of mind. “Once, we had a customer contact us about the program and why she should take her car to one of our shops,” Allen said. “She mentioned the name of the repair shop. I knew the technicians that were going to be responsible to complete the repairs on her car. “She seemed taken aback that I would know these gentlemen since she was in a different part of the country. I explained that they attend training here in Ashburn, and as the in the nation in 2017, the last year for which National Association of Insurance Commissioners data exists. Its average combined premium of $1,637.57 — averaging everyone who bought the trifecta of collision, comprehensive and liability coverage — also was highest by more than $100. “The issue of lowering insurance rates should be non-political and bipartisan, so long as those legislators and stakeholders who truly want to arrive at a real solution are able to define the debate and ultimate agreement,” Edwards wrote. “I support those efforts and will work diligently to get to that result.”Reprinted Contented: Copyright © 2020. initial method of the repair is recorded, the equipment used, the materials like adhesives and seams sealers, corrosion protection and fasteners are all recorded when the vehicle is repaired,” Allen said. “The repair is validated by re-crashing the car in simulators and in physicality to ensure it performs the way the structure is designed to behave. We provide a network that is capable of completing these repairs and providing a tested outcome every time a vehicle is repaired.” During office tours, Allen often points to a green-painted side door aperture brace welded into the door of an Audi Q5, noting a process developed following government collision safety testing ensures a similar level of quality and integrity to what the door aperture had before an impact. For that project, a team in Germany looked at data from U.S. testing to ensure a global quality standard. There are also some processes developed by our trainers in Ashburn. Take, for instance, collision repair and replacement of the carbon fiber B-pillar on the Audi R8. That repair process also benefits Audi Sport racecars campaigned around the world. Regarding repair facilities that aren’t in the Audi Certified program, Allen says, “What the average shop that is not a part of the program does is a very big unknown. detecting. This Experience Mode opens up deeper insights into the car’s technology, such as how it communicates with its surroundings. In the BMW Concept i4, the focus here is on anticipatory and efficient driving, and key information for efficient driving is incorporated. The right-hand area of the display shows additional vehicle information, such as the charge level and range. The technology as earmarked for the upcoming BMW i4. Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology is a defining feature of the BMW i4 and therefore also of future electric mobility. The BMW iX3(not currently planned for the U.S. market) due to go into production in 2020 will lead the way in the application of the new tech, which will be introduced in a number of electrically powered BMW vehicles – such as the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4. The electric motor, power electronics, charging unit and high-voltage battery using fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology are allnew developments enabling the BMW Group to take another significant step forward in the field of electrified drive systems. The electric motor developed for the BMW i4 generates maximum output of up to 390 kW/530 hp, which ranks it alongside a current BMW V8 combustion engine. Its instantaneous power delivery gives the BMW i4 standout performance attributes and exceptional efficiency. The fifth generation of BMW eDrive also brings a newly designed high-voltage battery with the very latest battery cell technology. The version of the battery developed for the BMW i4 impresses with its extremely slim construction and optimised energy density. It weighs roughly 550 kilograms, has an energy content of around 80 kWh and achieves an estimated EPA range of 270 miles / WLTP range of 600 km. Series production of the new BMW i4 Series production of the new BMW i4 will begin in 2021 at the BMW Group’s main plant in Munich. This means that, in the future, combustion-engined vehicles, plug-in hybrids and allelectric vehicles will be manufactured on the same assembly line in Munich.n

I-CAR to Provide Expanded Training to Audi of America’s Collision Repair Network as OEM Seeks to“Raise the Training Bar” for New Members to Provide Expanded Training to Audi I-CAR® (the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair) today announced a collaborative partnership with Audi of America’s Collision Repair Network, in which I-CAR will deliver expanded training to all new Network members as Audi seeks to augment the knowledge of technicians and shop management, thus bolstering customer care, amid a new era of vehicle sophistication and repair complexity. I-CAR Gold Class® certification has been a “foundational pre-requisite” for any member of Audi’s Collision Repair Network, prior to progressing to Audispecific repair training, explained Mark Allen, Collision & Equipment Manager, Audi of America. Now, Audi is “deepening its knowledge and skills benchmark” for all new network members by

expanding I-CAR training requirements to include approximately 93 online, virtual and live Professional Development Protocol (PDP) courses, effective June 1. A complete list of expanded I-CAR Audi training courses/requirements can be found here. In addition to maintaining Gold Class® status, shops will have one (1) year to complete the additional I-CAR courses, many of which focus on advanced vehicle technologies and Electric Vehicle (EV) awareness. Audi of America’s expanded training requirements are applicable to new collision repair network members only, however, Allen explained that existing, in-network shops are encouraged to review the updated course path and requirements, and complete

any needed training. Courses are rolespecific, addressing the training needs of Production Manager, Estimator, Structural Technician and Refinisher. “Audi of America is raising the bar on training for our collision repair network in an effort to lead the repair needs of our future vehicles,” said Allen. “While all members of Audi’s Collision Repair Network are Gold Class® recognized and new, pending members are in the process of achieving Gold Class, we are going the extra mile to prepare our Audi Authorized Collision Repairer community for the future.” Allen explained that expanding the knowledge base of technicians and shop management is critically imporI-CAR Please Turn to Page 34

How Body Shops Can Grow and Improve Their Business By Brian Medford Dave Luehr, CEO of Elite Body Shop Solutions regularly hosts free monthly information sessions focused on how body shops can grow and improve their business. Dave’s June 2020 webinar "The 6th Secret – Leveraging the Power of the Mastermind" focused on the importance of like-minded “big-thinker” business people working together towards a greater goal. This “MastermMind” business leadership concept has been used by some of the greatest businesses leaders in history to ignite their success. Today’s collision industry business owners are facing obstacles on a variety of fronts. Dave identified six internal and six external challenges facing today’s collision shops. Internal challenges included issues like attitudes & beliefs, scarcity mindset, lack of entrepreneurial passion, lack of business skills, lack of a positive social network, and finally loneliness. External challenges familiar to most shops included consolidation, technological advancement, a shortage of talent, suppressed labor rates, rising costs, and dealing with insurance companies. We recommended checking out the replay of Dave’s free webinar found at elitebodyshopsolutions.com for a full breakdown of each challenge. Dave notes that failure to evolve is a major reason for many small business failures. Speaking about the collision industry overall “This is a businessman’s game now, not a lifestyle business like it was back in the 70s and 80s.” Surrounding yourself with the

Dave’s inspirational journey back to the top included working in leadership positions for many of America’s leading collision repairers as an operational expert and collision process engineer. Now as the founder of Elite Body Shop Solutions, a popular keynote speaker and author of The Secrets of America’s Greatest Body Shops.

right people is extremely important says Dave, “You and I will never succeed past the level of those that we spend the most time.” This means actively seeking out those who are achieving the level of success that you want to meet. This applies to small single store body shop owners all the way up to Multi Shop Operations (MSOs). Peer groups like industry associations, local business clubs, social media groups, franchises & networks, and finally 20 Group & Mastermind groups are key to success. It is the last peer group, 20 Groups and Mastermind groups that Dave sees as having great importance. Putting together a good Mastermind group takes the right pieces. Dave cites such things as great members, clear expectations, trust, great facilitation, coaching, positivity, accountability, encouragement, fresh ideas, independence, and measuring performance. Rex Dunn (currently with Gerber Collision & Glass, formerly with True2Form Collision Repair Centers) started the Coyote Vision

Group and is one example Dave uses to show the power of a Mastermind group. Through the Coyote Vision Group group Rex was able to grow his business exponentially. Dave points out that the success of the Coyote Vision Group was in part due to members sharing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and refusing to accept mediocrity from one another. Finally Dave announced his new virtual Elite Mastermind Groups starting July 2020. These virtual Mastermind groups will leverage a new Bodyshop Toolbox online portal to connect success driven collision business people. Members will be able to view KPIs, group insights, schedules, performance compliance, and financial goals. These powerful tools allow businesses to see where they stack up among their peers. Infrastructure Package Includes Key Vehicle Safety Provisions & Technician Outreach In a 24-hour long marathon mark-up, the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure approved H.R. 2, the INVEST in America Act. The surface transportation reauthorization bill provides $494 billion over five years for transportation initiatives. The bill will be part of a broader infrastructure package, the Moving Forward Act, that was recently unveiled in the U.S. House of Representatives. The legislation includes a motor vehicle safety title that consists of previously introduced bills and provisions that have been introduced by the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Additionally, included in the package is a proposal from U.S. Congressman Rick Larsen (D-WA) establishing a Transportation Workforce Outreach Program. The program directs the U.S. Secretary of Transportation “to establish a public service announcement campaign to increase awareness of transportation sector career opportunities and to increase diversity in the transportation sector.” This provision includes automotive technicians. During a subsequent Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety teleconference, U.S. House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce Chairwoman

Safety provisions incorporated in the title include: • Prevention of deaths from hot vehicles. • Adding safeguards to keyless ignition technology. • Mandating crash-avoidance technology in all new passenger vehicles, including forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. • Lane detection technology. • Reinvigoration of the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) assured that the $1.5 trillion proposal will pass the House, marking a transformational investment in American infrastructure. “Our nation is suffering from an automobile safety public health crisis – with this act we’re attacking this crisis head on enacting sweeping auto safety reforms that mandate proven safety technologies,” Schakowsky said. While the bill includes a study on interactions between automated vehicles and road users, Schakowsky did acknowledge that the bill would not include an autonomous vehicle (AV) framework. The chairwoman said the committee and staff are continuing to work toward an AV framework. Last week the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) National Highway

Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) held a series of webinars to launch the start of the Automated Vehicle Transparency and Engagement for Safe Testing Initiative (AV Test Initiative). NHTSA Deputy Administrator James C. The initiative is meant to facilitate increased public understanding about the development, safe on-road testing and deployment of AVs. H.R. 2 is expected to pass the House next week. The current surface transportation authorization expires Sept. 30, 2020. n

Added Stacey Moellering, I-CAR AVP, Marketing & Segment Development; “I-CAR is proud to support Audi’s exceptional commitment to training, which benefits the industry and I-CAR’s vision of ensuring complete, safe and quality repairs on behalf of the consumer.”n
