2023-24

BUILDING FINE YOUNG MEN. ONE BOY AT A TIME.

GREETINGS SENIOR SCHOOL FAMILIES!

Welcome to the new school year! It is my hope that when you receive this information, it will be after a summer of adventure and rejuvenation. When I was a boy, this time of year created a concoction of emotions in my stomach. I was both nervous and excited and that combination built up an energy and impatience to get started. Decades later, I still have many of those same feelings in my stomach as each new school year approaches.

My father always told me not to look forward with expectations but rather with anticipation. I’m not sure I totally agree with him but the ideas behind his statement are good, especially for a boy waiting for the school year to begin. Let me see if I can explain.

His theory was that an expectation of something is static; exact. What we expect is a fixed thing and that very exactness means it can be fraught with the possibility of disappointment and frustration. Expectation means that before we have even started, we have discounted all kinds of amazing variables that might have been brilliant. Unless you have the chance to tell every friend, teacher, parent, or coach exactly what it is you expect of each situation, the chances that they are able to work with you to create that exact expected outcome seems slim. My dad’s theory is that focusing on expectations leads to a very narrow experience of life. Instead, my dad always told me to look forward in anticipation. His theory was that anticipation allowed for a whole myriad of outcomes and experiences, all of which could possibly be brilliant. Anticipation was a mindset of openness, imagination, and creativity. All things were possible. He believed that anticipation made friendships better and experiences more fulfilling because things were not judged before they began. He also believed feelings of anticipation made it more likely that I’d try new things and evolve myself, rather than staying static.

I’m not sure I totally agree with my dad. I think it is important to have some expectations. For example, you should have high expectations of the faculty, staff, and our commitment to support your unique son during his time at St. George’s School and towards his adventure after he leaves us. That is really important — it is a responsibility I take very seriously.

However, it is my hope that you also look with anticipation at that same journey, curious to see the untold passions and curiosities your son will develop. One of my favourite discoveries about St. George’s School is the atmosphere of possibility it creates for our boys. It is so often true that our boys anticipate all manner of paths for themselves with incredible outcomes. It is a glorious sensation to see boys of all ages unencumbered by imposed restrictions of expectations, and instead creatively anticipating with excitement the possibilities ahead of them. And so, as we seek to provide the very best experience of learning for our boys, expectations can be very important, but it seems anticipation is essential. I look forward to seeing you soon and wish you and your family the very best for the upcoming year.

WELCOME

GREETINGS

FROM THE PRINCIPAL OF THE SENIOR SCHOOL

Dear St. George’s Families,

Welcome back to another exciting year at St. George’s School! I hope this letter finds you and your loved ones in good health and high spirits. The 2023-24 school year is ahead of us and full of promise. The dawn of each school year represents new beginnings and inspiring possibilities. Given that this is my first year as the Senior School Principal at St. George’s School, this notion is particularly meaningful for me. I cannot wait to build relationships with all of you as we collectively move forward with enthusiasm and a clear sense of purpose.

Schools and parents have a shared goal to empower children with knowledge, values, and skills that will serve as their compass in navigating the world beyond these halls. As the new year starts, I like to recommit to this ambition, in concert with you, and look ahead to all the opportunities that we have planned to motivate and engage your children.

Learning is an adventure, one that sparks curiosity, and our dedicated faculty and staff are committed to creating a dynamic and engaging environment that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and a love of learning. We also recognize that learning transcends the classroom and is the culmination of each child’s comprehensive experiences at school. We want our School to become a place where students and educators come in each day intrinsically motivated to explore something they were eager to learn the night before. We want them to leave school hoping to share their day’s experiences and discoveries, rather than trying to forget about them.

The following document provides details about school start-up, including the Academic and Student Life Programs. As always, please check the website and read the weekly Saints eNews to stay informed about all the amazing activities and events going on at the School. The “My Resources” page of the website is also a helpful tool as it provides invaluable information about the policies and routines of the School.

Here’s to an enriching and fulfilling year ahead! Thank you for your unwavering support and trust in St. George’s School. Together, we will strive to nurture young minds, building fine young men who will make a positive impact on the world.

Kindest regards,

CONSTRUCTION AND NEW SCHOOL UPDATE

We are very excited about the construction of the new Senior School! The southeast corner of the senior campus continues to be an active construction site and the current safety procedures will remain in place through the completion of the buildings. We will continue to minimize disruption to the daily school routines, and as firm dates are established, we will communicate the move to the new building.

DROP OFF AND PICK UP

As a result of construction, drop-off and pick-up will continue to be impacted, and all students are encouraged to use the school’s busing system, carpool, bike, or walk to school. If students must be dropped off, only students in Grades 8 and 9 may be dropped off in front of the school on West 29th Avenue. Furthermore, we ask that you move forward as far as possible prior to dropping off your child. Drop-off for all other students (Grades 10–12) is on Camosun Street or east of Camosun Street on West 29th Avenue.

FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 8–10:

Your final schedule is based on school requirements, information you gave us in the spring, class capacities, teacher and facility availability, and school approval.

FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 11–12:

Our 2023-24 Master Timetable is optimised based on the combination of student choice, teacher and facility availability, and school approval. You may have elements of your own schedule that no longer serve your interests, goals, or capacities. On page 8 of the 2023–24 Academic Handbook, you will find the options available for course changes.

From 9:00 am on August 18th until 4:00 pm on August 30th, Grade 11 and 12 students:

If you would like to request a change that fits these parameters, take the following steps:

• Review your schedule on the School Portal and discuss with your parents/guardians.

• Review the 2023-24 Master Timetable to see what other options are available.

• Refer to page 8 of the 2023–24 Academic Handbook for further course change details, page 10 and 11 for graduation and course load requirements, and the rest of the handbook for course descriptions and prerequisites.

• Make requests using Course Change Into Grade 11 and 12 form. Returning students should use their St George’s email address to complete the form. New students can use their personal email address.

• After this, you do not need to take any further action. You do not need to consult with your University Counsellor separately. The University Counsellors, Mr. Vytasek, and

• Ms. Bahia will be reviewing requests and will reach out to you via email should there be any questions. Please check your email regularly during this time period.

• Review your updated schedule by 5:00 pm on September 5th for changes that were possible and attend classes as scheduled.

TEXTBOOKS

There is no advanced textbook collection. Teachers will make arrangements for students to receive textbooks if needed during class time. PLEASE NOTE: When textbooks are signed out, students are responsible for returning the books with the specific barcodes assigned to them. Charges are incurred for lost, damaged, or textbooks not returned by June 28, 2024.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

A list of required school supplies is available HERE. Students are encouraged to develop their own system of managing their daily, weekly, and monthly schedule and will be provided with organization ideas through Flex Day Programming.

SUMMER READING

Every year, students in each grade are provided a Summer Reading List, based on their grade. The lists have a combination of required and optional texts that students are expected to read before the first day of school. The first unit of the year in English classes is devoted to these texts. We encourage you to read them as a family! The Summer Reading List can be found HERE.

Student Life enriches the schooling experience of our students, ensuring that the development of our Core Values and the social emotional growth of each individual remains at the forefront of our daily endeavours.

Grounded in positive relationships, our school community nurtures a sense of belonging and provides opportunities for students to gain a strong sense of identity. We accomplish these goals of identity formation through a systems approach and intentional programming within our Advisory structure, Co-curricular activities, Student Support Services, Flex Days, and by capitalising on teachable moments.

It is through sustained engagement in the aforementioned that we believe our students will gain a stronger sense of their values and personal beliefs; a foundation that will serve them well beyond the walls of St. George’s School.

For further clarification or questions about anything related to this section, please contact: Mr. Brian Lee, Associate Principal of Student Life at: blee@stgeorges.bc.ca.

CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMS

Co-curricular Programs are an important aspect of our education program and include competitive athletics, recreational athletics, arts and leisure, and co-curricular clubs. All students in Grades 8–10 must participate in a co-curricular activity each term; students in Grades 11 and 12 are permitted to take one term off.

Students’ co-curricular assignments will be posted on Canvas along with details about the location and the start time of activities. The following is an outline of the After-School CoCurricular Programming Timelines for Term 1 (September 18–November 24, 2023):

• Online sign-up opens:

- Boarders: Thursday, September 7 at 7:00 am

- Day Students: Friday, September 8 at 7:00 am

• Sign-up closes: Thursday, September 14 at 2:00 pm

• Official co-curricular start: Monday, September 18

• Official co-curricular ends: Friday, November 24

A full list of the Term 1 options is available HERE.

Students will receive a report card comment outlining their attendance and participation in each Co-Curricular activity.

INTEREST CLUBS

Interest Clubs also form an important part of school engagement and relationship building at the senior campus. Although optional, Interest Clubs offer flexibility in commitment and a breadth of activities for students to engage in during lunch periods. Essentially, they provide another opportunity for students who share similar areas of passion to come together, connect, and collaborate.

ADVISORY

The purpose of the Advisory Program is to cultivate a positive school climate and ensure that each student experiences a sense of belonging in our school community. Through nested communities, our students gain a more personalised learning experience within a culture of care.

Student Advisory Classes will be assigned on their updated course schedule that they should review September 5th after 5:00 pm on the School Portal. Students will remain with the same Advisory Group throughout their time at the Senior School.

Advisory classes occur weekly during the Connection Block on Tuesdays or Fridays. Our Advisory Program will provide a home base for pastoral care, academic support, character development, and community building. We work hard to provide a relationship-based learning environment where students are known, heard, and understood by at least one faculty/staff member as well as provide a space for the continued enrichment of peer-to-peer relationships.

STUDENT LIFE

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Student comportment is a core aspect of life at St. George’s School. How we interact with one another and how we accept responsibility for ourselves are essential parts of becoming a “fine young man.” As always, we hold our students to the highest level of expectations and are pleased with how they learn to meet these expectations on a daily basis, forming habits that create a foundation for their success for years to come.

CODE OF CONDUCT

Each year, our students review the Code of Conduct during their Advisory class. The Code of Conduct outlines our expectations of our students as they relate to behaviour both on and off campus. It is essential that all students take the time to review the key principles outlined and have a full understanding of the expectations. As parents, you would have reviewed and signed the Code of Conduct during the registration process.

UNIFORMS AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE

St. George’s School’s Uniform and Student Personal Appearance Policy exist in order to cultivate a safe and respectful educational environment. The dress code outlines our high standards for presentation and complements our expectations for work and behaviour. The shared uniform is an expression of our shared community and we ask students to wear their uniform with respect and responsibility. We have made changes to the Uniform and Student Personal Appearance Policy to foster a more inclusive school environment. Students’ hair should be kept neat and tidy and away from the face. Neatly trimmed facial hair is permitted and the School will respect religious and cultural traditions of students who observe a particular manner of dress or personal appearance. We expect that all students will meet our Uniform and Personal Appearance standards. Students should wear their uniforms with pride and follow the standards set by the School. Specifically, they should be dressed in the following:

• White School Logo Golf Shirt (September and Spring Dress) OR

• White Dress Shirt with School Tie (Number One Uniform)

• Grey Pants

• Black Belt

• Grey Socks

• Polished Black Dress Shoes

• School Blazer (for Assembly and Special Occasions)

During school hours, students are not permitted to wear sweatshirts, hoodies or jackets in the building. If students require warmer clothing in the winter, they are advised to purchase a school sweater or wear their school blazer.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is mandatory for all students. Being physically at school working with classmates and teachers is a key component of the educational experience. If students are going to be absent from school for any reason, please communicate prior to the absence to our Attendance Clerk by emailing: senior_attendance@stgeorges.bc.ca or by leaving a voice message at 604-221-3636.

SCHOOL ENTRY AND LATES

Arriving on time is essential for our student success. Students who are late for classes should enter through the Great Hall (Door C) and physically check in with our Attendance Clerk prior to attending class. Students who demonstrate a pattern of tardiness will be held accountable and subject to school disciplinary action.

TECHNOLOGY

Use of laptops is an important part of the learning environment. All students are required to bring a charged laptop or tablet with them daily. These devices will allow them to connect to our Canvas Learning System as well as other applications used throughout the school.

The use of phones or laptops for entertainment purposes (games, videos) is discouraged at school. Students are not permitted to use technology of any type during their lunch period except for academic purposes, and only within designated areas (Learning Commons and areas supervised by a school official). Please visit the Technology Use Policy for further details on etiquette and the expectations on technology use throughout the school day.

FOOD SERVICES AND LUNCHTIME

All students will eat in McLean Hall (including Grads) during their designated lunch period. Students may choose to bring their own lunch to McLean Hall or participate in the Hot Lunch Program. Those boys who participate in the Program must bring their ID cards to electronically “swipe” in at every meal. Students with special diets will be accommodated within the Meal Program and should contact Bobby Phan, our Food Services Director, at: catering@stgeorges.bc.ca.

Sign-up for the Hot Lunch Program is available HERE. Students who bring their lunch from home are expected to recycle their lunch containers as appropriate.

Students are not permitted to order food from external food services, unless authorized by school administration for club or group meeting purposes. Food should not be eaten outside of McLean Hall, and dishes should not be removed from the dining area.
