French -- Français

FR 348: ST: Business French

MWF 11:30

Using dynamic simulations and team-based projects, Business French helps students learn to communicate and complete tasks in professional settings in French. Students also develop an understanding of the economies and companies of the Francophone world while strengthening their French language skills. Taught in French. Prof. Crisafulli (LING/GLOB/WI) FR 367 Nineteenth-Century Lit.: Dandies, Sick Heroes, and Girls Gone Wild MW 2:40 If you think nineteenth-century French literature is boring, think again! The novels, short stories, and poems of the French 1800s are full of fashionable, feminized men and wild, crazy, or diabolical women. Donning striking dandy outfits with an air of superiority, young French writers and their heroes reacted against an increasingly utilitarian society dominated by money and industrial growth. While the fall of Napoleon deprived them of heroic activism, the emerging aspirations of women threatened their male authority. We will see that French dandyism, inspired by famous British dandies, developed its very own characteristics and theories. We will also contrast the typical male romantic hero with fascinating female versions and discuss two threatening representations of womanhood that permeate late nineteenth-century French literature and art, the bas bleu and the femme fatale. Taught in French. Prof. Rossbach (AESTH/WI) Join the French Club for these fun upcoming events: >Every Monday at 4pm: Table française. All levels welcome! Courses Offered for Spring 21 CN100 : Chinese I CN100 Chinese I: An Introduction course for beginners. This course aims to provide a foundation for speaking, listening, reading, and writing Chinese.

CN301: Chinese Language and Culture This course is designed to help students improve Chinese language proficiency and cultural competence through a variety of popular media content such as television program, news clips, and documentaries. It aims to equip students with communicative skills, with emphasis on vocabulary building, advanced grammar, and writing. Discussion is also selected to extend students’ understanding of Chinese culture, history, and politics. Spicy hotpot is well known to be China’s most tasty hotpot. Although this specialty from Sichuan/Chongqing is famous around the world, many people still do not know that they should not bring their favorite overcoat or jacket into the restaurant. The reason is that the strong smell of spicy hotpot tends to stay on clothes. If you plan one day to enjoy Sichuan hotpot in a local restaurant, remember to bring casual clothes.
