"Sagemont embodies a true spirit of community that fosters the growth of social skills and individual spirit. Students collaborate together in safe spaces that encourage risk taking, while respecting each other's differences in both academic and personal areas "

This year at Sagemont, we have worked tirelessly to create a culture whereby students and faculty members could join together in ways not possible for years. Creativity often does not spark when studying or teaching in silos.

Perhaps one of the biggest obstacles that arose for educators during the pandemic was fostering a collaborative environment either virtually or from 6’ of distance. Although we may never be fully post pandemic, we can now fortunately work, study and play together with more confidence.

A critical component of Sagemont’s curriculum design is to begin with the end in mind and collaborate with our partners on both campuses. In order to provide a protected time for innovative professional planning, the Upper Campus has established monthly Think Tank sessions for faculty. This allows for robust cross curricular discussion, the ability to create lessons that infuse the expertise of various departments, and enables faculty to “teach outside the box.” In addition, we have a talented set of mentor teachers who consistently rotate through classrooms to better support teachers and students, and help review assessment data to establish an environment of reflective teaching practices.

Julianne Vecere, Upper Campus Department Chair and Mentor Teacher, shares her thoughts on academic collaboration: “No one in science has ever been able to accomplish anything alone! Every major discovery has happened because a scientist or group of scientists worked together and used each other’s ideas to solve the answers to bigger, more complex problems than they could ever produce alone. Having our students collaborate on labs and scientific investigations allows them to best utilize their own skill sets for the sake of the group’s goal. To extend that even further, the goal of the 7th grade innovation fair is to have them work together to think outside of the box to produce answers that have not been discovered yet to problems they are already facing.”

The Sagemont School fosters leadership skills across all content areas, extracurricular activities, and clubs. Our focus on providing peer mentoring and relationship building opportunities have truly had a positive influence on our students. “Roaring Readers and Leaders” is one such program, which transforms the concept of traditional book buddies by incorporating student leadership throughout all activities. It is a concept that pairs different grade level classrooms for community reading time an upper grade will connect with a lower grade. All students benefit from the opportunity to practice reading and engage in meaningful discussions. This is an activity that is done across both campuses (elementary, middle, and high school students). Classrooms set aside 30 minutes once a month for students to read together while building valuable relationships. In addition, special activities are planned during this time to engage and excite our students. Preschool and VPK will be paired with 4th graders, Kindergarteners will be paired with 3rd graders and 1st and 2nd grade will be paired with 5th graders We will also extend this activity to include the Upper Campus

students to come and read to our elementary students. The benefits are profound. It allows younger students to hear more experienced readers model fluent reading. They can also acquire a positive role model to look up to. They see their buddy demonstrating positive behavior and valuable social skills. The older students develop leadership, social and emotional skills in addition to positive character traits such as patience, compassion, empathy, and confidence. When students are given the opportunity to mentor, they are more likely to thrive. Shy readers may feel more comfortable reading aloud to younger peers instead of their same aged peers. Additionally, the roots of the school community are maximized and deepened as classes across campuses work and share together. It brings in a sense of relationship, companionship, responsibility, and excitement. The goals of cooperative and collaborative learning are effective ways to build a sense of community in the school as well as to promote reading for pleasure. The students become excited to see one another even when they are in the hallway or at schoolwide events. These relationships will year after year, not only through literacy but also through other projects and activities. Powerful and memorable moments of connection and interactions can happen during these shared reading activities as well as other social, emotional, and leadership lessons. Let’s give a big roar to our readers and leaders!

Now, with that said, a great deal of the first few months of school is dedicated to our seniors. This year I am excited to have our College Counseling Class, the first ever at Sagemont. This is a designated space every day for our 12th grade students to connect and learn about college skills, the college application process, goal setting, and career/resume development. During class time, I provide one on one sessions that allow me to uncover the obstacles that may hinder students' confidence in applying to their dream college. Building connections and looking at the journey ahead goes beyond applications and essays, and every Friday is our team building day. During this time an exercise is provided to each group of students and they work together to develop relationships, commonalities, and differences in and beyond the classroom. These exercises provide real world scenarios, and students are able to disperse into different groups to solve a scenario. As our seniors finish their college application process, I will be taking time to visit our other high school classes to start the planning process for their journey ahead.

As I enter my first full year at Sagemont, I have been thrilled to have met so many students and parents already. Before the academic year resumed, I was busy getting our students prepared for their journey here at Sagemont and the journey to college. This summer, the college office held a Lunch and Learn that focused on the Academic Pathway from 6th grade through 12th grade. The topics we covered together ranged from exploring one’s passion in 6th grade to resume/E portfolio building in the 8th grade and at the high school level we focused on internships in the 11th grade and attending summer programs before senior year. These valuable and real world experiences create a sense of community and relationship building with other colleges and students from all over the world. Very importantly, opportunities such as these allow students to gain and develop skills that can be applied in so many areas of their lives now and in the future. Also, let’s not forget these experiences do build a stronger resume. The college office is here to support this growth in your children, so do reach out and we can explore opportunities together.

We are so excited to share that we have successfully kicked off our Middle and High School Advisory Program. The purpose of the advisory program is to ensure that our teachers build meaningful relationships with each student. Our Sagemont staff is committed to learning each individual student's learning needs are being met and we are consistently encouraging them to make strong academic choices and plans for their future. Advisory provides a wonderful opportunity for students to develop a relationship with a trusted adult, as well as peers, something research shows makes a significant difference in how well students do in school.

Luann Burrows,

Guest speakers will be invited to the advisory class as our students hear testimonies from community members and Sagemont alumni who have conquered the journey to success and are anxious to share their words of wisdom with our middle and high school students. I know parents will join us in celebrating this wonderful endeavor!

Relationships Matter at The Sagemont School

Our developmentally appropriate Advisory Program is designed to create a strong support system that students need to develop academically, socially, and emotionally. During the Middle School years, students hone their talents and often develop lifelong hobbies, interests, and skills as they begin to think about who they are, and what they want to achieve as they show interest in career options. Our High School Advisory Program directs college bound students to the necessary resources, skills, and relationships as they create a sense of community and ensure students know that there is always someone that they can turn to for help, be it academically, socially, or personally.

School Counseling

The Sagemont Counselors have an important role in the Advisory Program as they ensure that meaningful topics are covered regarding students' social emotional well being, discovering their interests, championing their strengths, and learning the necessary life skills as they plan for the future.

Cultivating Childhood Relationships Through Mindfulness

Mindfulness can be a rewarding journey for both teachers and students. But like most journeys, the benefits are greater when mindfulness is approached as an ongoing process of discovery and exploration, rather than having a particular end goal. We adopted mindfulness at Sagemont, letting it grow organically. In August 2020, we incorporated a relevant practice: “morning mindfulness” in our daily Monty’s Morning Show. Morning mindfulness is helping our students feel connected and safe within their classroom. They can do this practice knowing that no one will make fun of them. We allow flexibility, giving the students some autonomy to start slowly practicing.

The Sagemont School values a harmonious culture of respect and understanding, which is visible in our diverse community. Awareness is a fundamental skill for mindfulness and the mindset, which helps develop a sense of self and others. We explicitly teach self regulation and positively reinforce those behaviors in children, which create good relationships with their peers. And we know that relationships are essential as children develop socially and emotionally. If I could give each child a gift, it would be the gift of awareness. Mindfulness practice centers on becoming aware and focusing on our feelings and attitudes in challenging moments. As teachers, we are aware of little moments that can disrupt a children’s day. Still, with mindfulness, they can take a break from anxiety or frustration by taking the first step, which is acknowledging their feelings and attitudes in these moments. Being present in those moments will allow the students to identify what they are feeling and how they are reacting. Mindfulness has taught me that it builds a trusting relationship with students because they can begin to count on our thoughtfulness while they struggle with developing critical social emotional skills.

Relationships are an important aspect of athletics from the connection a coach makes with his or her athletes, to the chemistry within a team, or the bond athletes often create with one another over the course of a season. The Sagemont Athletic Department also values the relationship between the Upper and Lower campuses. To show their support of the Lower School campus, our women’s varsity volleyball team assisted with carpool to promote their home opener and enjoy some time with our younger Lions! Last Wednesday the athletic department sponsored a Tacky Tourist dress down day and provided a popsicle party to the Lower School grade with the most number of participants at the volleyball game that night. The volleyball program did not disappoint with convincing wins over Donna Klein by both the middle school and varsity teams! Our other fall sports are off to a great start as the women’s varsity golf team came in 2nd place at the Maverick Invite, 7th grader Lily Mirones won the 100m backstroke at a high school meet and middle school flag football is underway!

Innovation & Technology

Welcome new and returning students and families to the 2022 2023 school year! As the Technology and Innovation Coordinator, serving students and staff on both campuses, I look forward to supporting the integration of technology and innovation in our everyday learning. I believe that innovation and technology in the classroom support teaching and learning by infusing the classroom with valuable digital tools, expanding course offerings, increasing student engagement, and accelerating learning. I will be working with teachers to better support them as we enter this new school year and their technology needs. I will be providing our wonderful teachers with numerous Professional Developments such as Schoology, Apple apps, G Suite apps, Clips and so much more! I am looking forward to working with our Vanguard and Instructional Mentor Teachers this year. I am happy to share that all middle school students and upper elementary grade students have received their iPad devices. We are in the process of completing our lower elementary iPad distribution process. This week, I conducted Digital Citizenship presentations for grades 3 5 and went over the importance of taking care of our devices and internet safety. My goal is to have Sagemont become an Apple Distinguished School. Apple Distinguished Schools are centers of leadership and educational excellence that demonstrate Apple's vision for learning with technology. Apple Distinguished Schools are known to be some of the most innovative schools in the world. Our goal is to provide students and teachers with the appropriate tools to instill technology and innovative learning. I am very excited about the beginning of the new school year and the endless opportunities that are ahead!

In partnership with Tennessee State University, one of the largest nationally recognized HBCUs, her scheduling allows for flexibility to become familiar with the depth of medicine through a Medical Terminology dual enrollment class. Similarly, Sagemont’s reflective senior year course requirements of economics and electives such as statistics have opened the idea of application. As a licensed esthetician, Annave recalls the clarity in which her classes have provided for small business essentiality including product inventory, managing income, and keeping track of the beauty market.

At Sagemont, one of the main missions emphasized in our school’s system is responsible risk taking and the development of social responsibility as active agents of change. With this encouragement, Annave was able to successfully pitch the idea of the Black Student Union, with a focus on connecting students of different backgrounds to embrace black heritage by promoting leadership, community outreach, and student empowerment. Her main mission through this initiative remains to,“ Gain a better understanding of others whilst learning more about ourselves”.

What is your favorite subject?

"Being innovative means that you create new things all the time and that you never let your mind stop. People who are innovative are people who ask a lot of questions and see things a little differently. Sometimes they think of ideas that aren't science ideas, but they solve problems in math, history, or daily life."

What are you most excited about at Sagemont this school year?

"I am excited about many things at Sagemont for the school year. I am really looking forward to the fun and adventurous field trips we will be taking in the future and I want to explore my interests in the clubs as well. I am also looking forward to being a lot more independent and choosing my own classes and activities. To wrap it up, I think this year is going to be action packed, thrilling, and full of discovery. I am looking forward to many more years at Sagemont."

"Science is my favorite subject of all time! I love everything about science and I want to study science in college, after I graduate, and for the rest of my life. I really enjoy learning new things and being a part of challenges and new discoveries. Everything I love to do most has something to do with science. Fishing is my favorite activity, and I am interested in conservation, the environment, and just figuring out which fish live where and how I can catch them! I love studying space and rockets, learning about how the universe is unique and a little weird, I love studying facts about rockets and how we can travel to other planets and places in the galaxy, as well as solving problems. I really loved dissecting a frog during the upper school trip this year! Science has always been my favorite subject and I want to be a scientist in some way when I grow up.
