Our Educational Philosophy Mel Nelson, Head of School Launching into the 23-24 academic year, a core focus for our students centered on continuously enhancing the opportunities for real-world application within and beyond the classroom walls. This emphasis guided our team to forge new community partnerships and strengthen those already in place with the aim of establishing lasting connections and learning opportunities for our students. From our collaboration with Code Ninjas, delivering an enriching coding experience to our Sagemont Prep students from PS-5th grade, to our recent membership in the Weston Chamber of Commerce, bringing local business leaders directly to our middle and high school students, our commitment to community connections is yielding authentic, collaborative, and meaningful learning opportunities. Whether you have joined Mel’s Tuesday Chats, attended our annual parent meetings, or chatted with me during carpool, we have discussed the goals for our incredible students that consistently revolve around preparing them for both the known and, very importantly, the unknown. Sagemont Prep strives each day to lead our students on a journey of skills development through our Educational Pillars, integrated across all classes and grade levels. This mindset makes enhancing our community partnerships essential to providing students with genuine real-world applications. Through engaging projects, interactive workshops, and hands-on experiences, we ensure our students grasp the theoretical aspects of their education and how to apply these concepts in reallife situations. Sagemont Prep firmly believes in linking classroom lessons to real-world applications, preparing our students for success in their future endeavors, whatever they may be. Our collaboration with the local community serves as a bridge between academics and the professional world, fostering opportunities for students to interact with the local community and gain valuable insights into various industries. Internships, expert speakers, and mentorship initiatives allow our students to explore their interests, develop practical skills, and build a network that will serve them well in the future. Sagemont Prep is a hub for innovation, where students take the lead, and opportunities come to life within and beyond the classroom walls. Our learning environment prioritizes intellectual curiosity, creativity, analytical thinking, problem-solving, responsible risk-taking, collaboration, and reflection—nurturing skills crucial for success in the ever-evolving global landscape. As we bring you this midyear issue of Lion Life, we are proud to showcase the diverse ways in which our students expand their learning within and beyond the classroom walls. So, grab your tea or coffee, and join us on an enriching exploration in the pages to follow! Sagemont Prep is committed to providing an educational community that transcends traditional boundaries in an ever-changing world. Sincerely yours in transformative educational excellence,

Mel Nelson

Felicia Myers, Upper Campus Principal As the academic year unfolds, Sagemont Prep continues to forge ahead, embracing innovation, fostering community engagement, and achieving remarkable success. Since August, our school community has embarked on a journey to enhance professional development and academic and co-curricular offerings, creating an environment where students and educators alike thrive. One of the pillars of our success lies in our commitment to continuous improvement. With investment in the establishment of on-site curriculum coach and an efficient feedback loop with administration, our educators are equipped with the tools and support they need to excel. Recognizing the importance of a solid foundation, we have revamped our new teacher onboarding process, which resulted in a more seamless integration of new faculty members into our school community, ensuring they are well-prepared to contribute meaningfully from day one. We have also redefined the concept of faculty and departmental meetings, making them more purposeful and productive. By focusing on actionable outcomes, our meetings have become a hub for collaboration and innovation, driving positive change throughout the school. These initiatives have not only empowered our teaching staff but have also directly impacted the quality of education received by our students. The heartbeat of Sagemont Prep lies in fostering an ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship. Pride Rock, our premier student-run business, has evolved into a beacon of community involvement, donating thousands of dollars this year alone. Initiatives like the Future City Competition challenge our students to imagine, research, and design sustainable cities of tomorrow, while new courses like Lean Six Sigma, Forensic Science, Sculpture, GloBus Strategy, and Film, to include the reimagined Morning Roar news program, open avenues for diverse learning experiences. Difference Makers, a new student-developed program, provides executive internship opportunities for students, such as their recent collaboration with F45, offering real-world experience through exercise science internships. Recently, Sagemont Prep student leaders and entrepreneurs had the opportunity to pitch their ideas and strategies to local business for true investment opportunities at the Weston Chamber of Commerce luncheon, hosted at the Upper Campus and catered by the Culinary Club.

Our school proudly celebrates diversity and leadership. Our Lion Table Talk series, produced by students, has hosted sessions on Hispanic Women in the STEM field and honored Native American women leaders like Ms. Mariann Billie, the first Councilwoman for the Seminole Tribe of Florida (Big Cypress Reservation) in 40 years and is preparing a special session dedicated to honoring Black History Month. Community impact is at the core of Sagemont Prep’s mission, and encouraging students to be active agents of change is embedded in our educational pillars. Student-driven clubs are required to incorporate community service initiatives, and we dedicate two days a year to a school-wide community service event, and this fall our Middle School students participated in a productive beach-cleanup.

Cultivating a positive culture on campus begins with increased opportunities for parent involvement and transparent communication. From the start of the year, we implemented new orientation workshops to set families up for success and continue those sessions every Tuesday with dedicated topics on Tuesday Chats with Mel. We overhauled our parent emails to produce the weekly Friday Flash newsletter highlighting classroom instructional practices and student achievements, and implemented a new text messaging service to foster effective communication. Positivity resonates throughout our school with initiatives like Battle of the Grades, Hallway Karaoke, Seasonal Trivia, and the focus on our Student Kudos and Staff Kudos recognition programs, which celebrates our Sagemont Prep family, from small acts of kidness to incredible accomplishments. Our commitment to academic excellence extends to competitions such as the Congressional App Challenge, ExploraVision Science Competition, Rho Khappa County History Bowl, and the Robotics Team and Aerial Drone team, now ranked 4th in the region. As we anticipate upcoming events like Week Without Walls, the 2024 Curriculum Fair, the Astronaut Space Challenge, and Sagemont Synergy Disney performances, the excitement is palpable. Our commitment to community building extends to the new and upcoming International Festival, theatrical performances like "The Adams Family Musical," and unique experiences like SCUBA shore dives, where students not only explore the depths but also raise funds for coral restoration projects. As we look ahead to future events and endeavors, we remain dedicated to creating an environment where students thrive academically, personally, and as responsible community members. The journey continues, and we are excited to see what the rest of the academic year holds for our dynamic school community.

Monica Vigna, Lower Campus Principal The past few months have been buzzing with excitement in and out of the classrooms at Sagemont Prep! Our students' learning experiences continue to extend far beyond the walls of the classroom. In prekindergarten, the students recently embarked on a captivating two-day pumpkin investigation. This immersive activity encouraged them to utilize their reasoning skills as they made predictions about pumpkins. The curious minds of our young learners explored questions such as whether a pumpkin would sink or float, how it might smell and feel, the number of seeds within, and considerations of height and texture. As we moved to upper elementary, our budding 5th-grade scientists delved into the intricate world of matter and energy in plants. Their journey began with a series of investigations to unravel the mysteries of plant growth. An on-campus exploration took place as the students explored the campus for seed-bearing trees to gain firsthand insights into the process of seed to plant, emphasizing the transfer of matter. The next step in this process led the students from their inquiry to application. With various seeds at their disposal, the 5th-grade scientists planted them in transparent bags with water and air, meticulously measuring the bags in grams before placing them on the lab window. Over the next few weeks, the students observed and recorded the evolving changes in matter, gaining a new appreciation for the vital role of water, air, and sunlight in sustaining plant life. Sagemont Prep celebrates literacy beyond the classroom with events such as Read for the Record. Read for the Record is an annual event recognized as the largest shared reading experience emphasizing the significance of early language development and social-emotional connections. Students across preschool, prekindergarten, and kindergarten engaged in the joy of reading, centering around the heartwarming story "With Lots of Love" by Jenny Torres Sanchez. The narrative, highlighting the power of love across distances, resonated with the diverse cultural backgrounds represented at the school. Through collaborative efforts, students explored various cultural activities, broadening their understanding of love and connection. Further underscoring Sagemont Prep's commitment to holistic education, the school actively partand

participated in Write Out, a two-week celebration in October that encourages writing, making, and sharing inspired by the great outdoors. This initiative, sponsored by the National Writing Project and the National Park Service, invites educators, students, and families to explore national parks and public spaces, fostering place-based writing and sharing experiences using the hashtag #writeout. Beyond academics, Sagemont Prep prioritizes leadership and mentorship opportunities for our students. Fourth and fifth-grade students meeting specific academic criteria were inducted into the prestigious National Elementary Honor Society. Active involvement for our students in the democratic process is paramount, and this was in full swing through the student council elections. The students campaigned, delivered speeches, and voted for key positions. The elected student council officers, aligned with the school's educational pillars, participate in monthly meetings, community events, and leadership activities. Their ultimate goal is to listen to the voices of their peers and contribute to the overall well-being of the school community. Demonstrating a strong sense of community engagement, Sagemont Prep students recently extended a warm welcome to members of the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) in Weston. A special event was organized, featuring a breakfast, enthusiastic cheers from the Little Lions Cheerleaders, heartfelt posters, and a performance by the Sagemont Prep School Show Choir. This event was a sincere expression of gratitude for the BSO officers' dedicated service, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the community. In another display of appreciation, Sagemont Prep students honored veterans with a ceremony, demonstrating their gratitude for the sacrifices made by these individuals in service to their country. Exciting developments continue at Sagemont Prep with the launch of the inaugural Robotics Team under the expert guidance of Code Ninjas. The team showcased their coding and robotics skills at the Miramar Aviation Expo and VIQRC Skills-Only Robotics Event, gaining valuable real-life practice and experience. Signature projects, such as the bridge-building endeavor by Future Engineers in the third grade, exemplify the school's commitment to fostering creativity, perseverance, and grit among its students. These initiatives enhance academic knowledge and instill crucial life skills that contribute to the holistic development of our students. As we reflect on the enriching experiences and achievements of the first semester, the anticipation for the next semester is clear. With a commitment to holistic education, hands-on learning, and a vibrant community spirit, our educational community inspires our faculty and staff to continue empowering students to embrace limitless possibilities, growth, and curiosity.

Tera Sweeting, College Counselor Sagemont Prep's College Counseling program is in full swing, and the fall semester has kicked off with enthusiasm. Our seniors have been engaged in the comprehensive College Counseling course that takes a proactive approach to the application season, immersing students in final essay composition, interview mastery, exploration of lucrative scholarship avenues, and the pivotal task of meticulously assembling all the components for successful applications. Notably, this academic year has expanded the instructional time within the course, affording our students the invaluable opportunity to delve even deeper into post-Sagemont Prep pathways and strategic future planning. Throughout this journey, I've had the privilege of discerning each senior's needs and empowering them to make well-informed decisions regarding their forthcoming educational endeavors. While our seniors are diligently finalizing their college applications and pursuing their dream colleges, our 9th-11th graders are gearing up for opportunities to explore their interests through local college tours and internships. Our recent Sagemont Prep College Expo Week was a resounding success, featuring daily sessions covering a range of topics to assist students at every grade level. We were honored to host guests from various areas of higher education, providing invaluable insights into the competitive application process. Notably, "The Scholarship Plug company" shared crucial resources for applying for scholarships, grants, and financial aid. The Princeton Review conducted an informative session on the Digital SAT and provided insights into the transition to college. The high school college fair boasted 65+ colleges in attendance. Additionally, our middle school college fair featured 47 Sagemont Prep seniors representing their chosen schools and offering valuable tips to our middle schoolers on preparing for the future. Our strong partnership with the Princeton Review continues, and we are delighted to welcome back Rob Franek, Editor-in-Chief, for a new workshop in the spring semester titled "Essays that Kick Apps!" Additionally, in collaboration with the Princeton Review, we will offer SAT and ACT tutoring on campus. While the upper campus students explore colleges beyond Sagemont Prep, our lower campus students are starting to consider their future with college in mind. I will be conducting our annual future pathway workshops for our upper elementary students, fostering an open dialogue about college and career pathways while encouraging the exploration of their developing passions. Reflecting on the beginning of the 2024 senior class, assisting students in applying to colleges and witnessing their acceptance to various dream universities brings me immense joy. The audible sighs of relief, jumps of joy, broad smiles, and newfound confidence in their steps signify the accomplishment of a significant milestone for each family. Our work together from elementary to high school all build to these beautiful senior year moments. "Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself." —John Dewey.

Luann Burrows, Lower Campus School Counselor As the world becomes increasingly interconnected and diverse, the ability to navigate complex social dynamics and understand one's own emotions is essential. Social skills are critical to your child's educational success, mental health, positive behavior, and overall well-being. Simply put, academic skills are strengthened by integrating social and emotional learning. Here at Sagemont Prep, our commitment extends beyond mere academic excellence; we wholeheartedly embrace the comprehensive development of every child. Our meticulously designed programs are geared toward fostering social, emotional, and academic triumph. Among these, our recently implemented Second Step Program takes center stage. Tailored to cultivate essential social-emotional skills such as fostering positive relationships, adeptly managing emotions, and setting ambitious goals, the Second Step Program serves as a cornerstone for propelling students toward success not only in the realm of academics but also in the broader spectrum of life. The Second Step Curriculum has built a comprehensive curriculum on the foundation of four core values and units: Growth Mindset & Goal Setting, Emotion Management, Empathy & Kindness, and Problem-Solving. Growth Mindset & Goal Setting Students learn to develop a growth mindset and apply research-based goalsetting strategies to their social and academic lives. This unit's content helps create connected and encouraging classrooms by helping students set and achieve collective and personal goals and learn from challenges and mistakes.

Emotion Management Students learn how to build their emotion vocabularies, practice identifying their and others' emotions, and recognize the importance of labeling and processing them. This unit's content helps students understand and explore how past experiences and unique perspectives influence how they feel and respond to situations.

Empathy and Kindness Students learn how to recognize kindness, act kindly toward others, and develop empathy by learning strategies to take others' perspectives. This unit's content helps students understand others' points of view.

Problem-Solving Students learn how to process strong emotions, describe a problem, identify the wants and needs of others, think of and explore the outcomes of potential solutions, and pick the best solution. This unit's content helps students ask, listen, and empathize with all parties involved during problem-solving.

By equipping Sagemont Prep students with the skills to manage emotions, build meaningful connections, and make responsible decisions, we fortify their foundation for academic success and empower them to thrive in an ever-changing world. Our students emerge not only as academically accomplished individuals but also as resilient, adaptable contributors prepared to thrive in the complexities of an ever-evolving global environment.

Yasmine Mohamed, Upper Campus School Counselor The role of a school counselor extends beyond traditional academic guidance, encompassing the holistic development of students. As students progress through middle and high school, our primary focus is to ensure they acquire comprehensive skills beyond textbook knowledge. Central to our approach is the emphasis on accountability, teaching students the value of taking ownership of their actions and decisions. Instilling a sense of responsibility empowers them to navigate the complexities of adolescence with maturity and resilience, establishing a foundation for lifelong success. In addition to accountability, we are dedicated to fostering the ability of students to advocate for themselves. This skill is not only practical in the academic arena but a lifelong tool. Recognizing that practice makes perfect, we begin early to nurture these skills. For students who may not yet be ready to advocate for themselves, we provide continued support, introducing them gradually to this unfamiliar territory. Encouraging students to articulate their needs, wants, opinions, and aspirations fosters self-confidence and self-advocacy, preparing them to navigate future challenges and opportunities. Moreover, we underscore the profound impact of personal choices on overall well-being and future trajectories. Understanding the power of their choices equips students with the discernment needed to make informed decisions crucial for their developmental milestones. This valuable learning tool empowers them to analyze each path ahead with projected outcomes and strengthens their decision-making skills. While academic achievement is important, socioemotional growth and learning are equally essential for academic success.

These skills are reinforced in the Sagemont Prep advisory sessions, by the entire faculty, and during interactions with the school counselor. The goal is to ensure that students feel safe, supported, and empowered to make mistakes with the intention of learning new skills and fostering a growth mindset. As adult role models in students' lives, it is crucial to view every opportunity as a moment for growth rather than being punitive—a perspective that guides our approach this school year.

It is hard to fail but it is worse to never have tried to succeed. THEODORE ROOSEVELT

ATHLETICS

Shane Marcey, Director of Athletics What an amazing start to the 2023-24 school year for the Sagemont Prep Athletics Department! It has been a swift but successful start for our athletes, coaches, and teams in the fall season. We are excited to see our men's basketball team return to the court to defend their state championship, but first, let us celebrate the successes of our fall programs. Our women's golf team had a monster year, bringing home four championships at the Maverick Invitational, South Florida PGA East and West Coast Championships, and their 6th District Championship in 7 years! Standout junior Ariana Silva was the top scorer in each of the first three events. The team also advanced to the FHSAA State Championships for the 7th consecutive year and finished 6th overall! The women's volleyball team experienced outstanding success, beginning their season with 16 straight victories, including winning the KSA National event in Orlando! They advanced to the FHSAA Regional semi-finals and are excited to return to work in the off-season. Although small, they are mighty, as the women's swim team had a great season overall, and 8th grader Lily Mirones advanced to the FHSAA Regional tournament! Finally, our girls' middle school volleyball and boys' flag football teams had a great time learning and competing while participating in the Independent Athletic League, and our men's varsity flag football team had a blast returning to the field. We want to thank our amazing coaches and athletes for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to our teams! Being a part of Sagemont Prep athletics is not just about practicing and competing, as we encourage our athletes to give back to their community

community. The women's volleyball team spearheaded a fall service project by collecting volleyball equipment and athletic apparel to donate to those less fortunate athletes in Haiti. They worked alongside Max Jeanty, a friend of Coach Marcey's who played internationally for Haiti. Overall, they collected over 100 pairs of shoes, 80 volleyballs, 12 boxes of apparel, and countless other items that Max will personally bring to Haiti. The men's basketball team hosted their annual Hoopsgiving event, which quickly became the premiere event in South Florida. A portion of their proceeds are donated to the Honor Flight. This organization raises funds to help fly veterans to Washington, D.C. so they tour and pay homage to the countless memorials in the district.

As our winter season kicks into high gear, our boy's middle school soccer team had a great experience and showcased several new athletes to the roster. We are excited to see our elementary basketball team in competitive action under Coach Sandi's guidance. Our varsity and elementary cheer teams have been hard at work perfecting their cheers and routines to make an impact at all of our basketball games. And, of course, we are all anxious to watch our men's basketball team return to the hardwood in hopes of winning back-to-back state titles. The team has worked hard in the off-season and took their talent on the road in late December to Las Vegas, where they competed in the Tarkanian Classic. Be sure to make your way out to the Goldman Athletic Center to catch some high-flying action because our spring sports are just around the corner! All important information regarding our programs can be found on the Athletics page under the Student Life tab at www.sagemont.com. As always, follow us on Instagram @sagemontprepathletics and be on the lookout for emails with updated information throughout the year. GO LIONS!!!

Club Highlight

by Serena Mair

Interact Club: In collaboration with the Rotary Club of Weston, Sagemont Prep’s Interact Club serves as a community service-based organization. Within the span of the past few months, Interact Club has participated in several service initiatives. Some of these include a collaborative donation opportunity with the National Honor Society: Sagemont Prep’s annual Harvest Drive, Light up The Night, and local beach cleanups in the Dania Beach region. Members also anticipated and welcomed another year volunteering at the Rotary Run, a Westonbased event that occurred on the 2nd day of December. Students currently seeking opportunities to gain experience in various disciplines of community involvement whilst simultaneously working to receive service hours should consider joining Interact this year.

National English Honor Society: Over the past three months, our chapter of the National English Honor Society has worked in the literary and social realms to advance the study of the English language. We have emphasized community service and engagement by participating in events such as Trunk or Treat and providing weekly tutoring services with our school’s staff. Additionally, members have been working on encouraging the literary arts through weekly written activities amongst our chapter, such as Flash Fiction. Following weeks of preparation and engagement, NEHS’ quarterly newsletter, The Sagemont Post, is officially live and available for all to read! Over the course of the next few weeks, NEHS is working towards and looking forward to helping local 501(c) nonprofit organization, Wonder Paw Rescue, through active support and community service. Additionally, we plan to continue to provide scholastic aid and English tutoring to middle and high school students on campus.

I then was accepted into Nova Southeastern University’s an...... Anesthesia Assistant Master’s Program, which I began in May of 2023, and I plan on graduating in August of 2025.

How did Sagemont Prep ignite your passions? Sagemont Prep helped ignite my passion by proactively encouraging and supporting me to dream big and never settle. Walking through the doors for the first time in 10th grade, I instantly knew Sagemont Prep was the place to help me achieve my goals academically and athletically. The staff is second to none, and the resources here will allow you to achieve anything you wish to accomplish.

Sagemont Prep Staff Inspiration: Coach Roe was the biggest inspiration for me during my time at Sagemont Prep both in the classroom and on the court. Having the honor to both be a student of his and play basketball for him, he emphasized the importance of dedication and having a strong work ethic. One of the main things I’ve learned from him was that one’s goals and dreams are earned, not given.

Words of Advice: My biggest advice for the current Sagemont Prep students is to recognize and identify your why. Reminding yourself of your end goal can be essential in helping you in the inevitable times you may feel like you need more motivation and support when working towards your goals.

Words of Advice: I would strongly encourage current students to take full advantage of the wide range of extracurricular activities offered by the school. Whether it is joining honor societies, participating in sports, engaging in community service, or starting your own clubs, these opportunities provide an excellent platform to explore and discover your passions. Working alongside classmates outside the traditional classroom setting can be immensely rewarding and fun!

How did Sagemont Prep ignite your passions? First and foremost, Sagemont Prep helped really prepare me for college and helped me to invest in my future. Prior to Sagemont Prep, going to college was always a thought, but attending Sagemont Prep really prepared me for what that entails and helped bring that thought into a reality through the college prep sessions with Ms. Nelson. Those sessions and the culture at Sagemont Prep provided exposure to many things that contributed to me getting into college and contributed to me striving for more in my future.

Sagemont Prep Staff Inspiration: Mrs. Safont; She always pushed me and she was a teacher that really cared about my success, as well as my colleagues. Her courses were challenging, but always fun classes. I think having those professors that not only motivate and push you, but also care about you is important to success. Life After Sagemont Prep: I finished my bachelor’s a year early in 2019, so I had time for a gap year before graduate school. During that year, I worked at multiple private psychology practices as a business administrator, where I gained experience in the field and made contacts with other PsyDs. In 2020, I moved to Illinois and started the PsyD program at Midwestern University. I am currently in my fourth year out of five, have worked at private practices and medical and psychiatric hospitals, and have received training in exposure therapy and health psychology. I currently work with patients experiencing heart and kidney failure as part of a transplant psychology program and am in the process of completing my dissertation.

How did Sagemont Prep ignite your passions? At Sagemont Prep, I learned how to balance extracurricular activities and community service with my studies. I was able to participate in soccer and different clubs while volunteering on the weekends and taking advanced-level classes. Support from my teachers and coaches helped me along the way. Taking AP Psychology in my senior year of high school is where my journey in psychology began, and I’m grateful for that today because I enjoy what I do.

Sagemont Prep Staff Inspiration: I am most inspired by Mrs. Yasmin, my mom, to do my best every day. Teachers who got me excited about learning were Ms. Sponnoble, Mrs. Safont, Mr. Roe, and Mr. Mitchell, who taught me my first psychology class.

Words of Advice: My advice is to get involved. High school and college are a good time to branch out and do something you’ve always wanted to try, or that’s outside of your comfort zone. Take the time to get to know your classmates, teachers, and mentors. There is a lot you can learn from new experiences and people.
