No one can really recall the early morning update headlines that topped msn.com on Tuesday, September 11 tho There may be a fuzzy recollection that the metropolitan papers were focused on the Big Apple's mayoral seat primary battle. The topics became insignificant compared to the events that sparked months of headlines that very day at 8:45 am. It was at that moment that the attention of an entire nation turned to an altering of the famous New York skyline, as thousands of lives were claimed and the United States witnessed the worst terrorist attack on its shores. From their privileged location on the opposing shores, Stevens students, faculty, and administration became eyewitnesses of the morning's events. The moments were surreal, as the reality unfolding simply appeared to belong to an action sequence from Hollywood's latest blockbuster smash. At 8:45am, as some students counted down the last five minutes left to their early morning lecture, and others begrudgingly surrendered to their sounding alarms and rose out of bed, a Boeing 767 slammed into the World Trade Center's north tower. Merely 18 minutes later, as community members poured onto the Castle Point and nearby lawns, the south tower was assaulted as well by a second hijacked commercial plane. The skyline was engulfed in flames. Forty minutes later, the Pentagon received a blow. Life seemed to slow down. Less than an hour later, the streets of Lower New York City were covered in several inches of ash as the highest pOints on the skyline plummeted to earth, floor by floor, in rapid succession. The Stevens chemistry programs include intensive study in organic, physical, inorganic and analytical chemistry, with important research underway in medicinal chemistry, instrumental analysis, computational chemistry, polymer chemistry, and biochemistry. The close affinity between chemistry and biology has fostered an approach to biology which is heavily dependent on chemical techniques, instrumentation and methodology. Stevens Institute was the first university to introduce a program of study in Chemical Biology. Whereas biochemistry is a branch of chemistry that deals with reactions of biological molecules, Chemical Biology is a branch of biology that draws on chemistry for its explanations and techniques. It is both modern and quantitative, and requires adequate preparation in chemistry and mathematics as a background. The success ofthe undergraduate Chemical Biology Program at Stevens has led to an expanded graduate program in Chemical Biology as a concentration within Chemistry. Research areas in Chemical Biology include genetics and cell biology, environmental and microbiology, physiology, and computational biology.

Computer Science is the study of the theory and practice of how to program computers. Study extends from fundamental mathematical issues such as "what functions are computable?" to the engineering principles of how to design large, multi-component distributed systems. Students with a BS in Computer Science typically graduate to technical positions in software development and business positions focusing on how best to use computer technology within an enterprise or over the Internet. This year, Prof. Elli Angelopoulou won a highly competitive and prestigious "CAREER" research grant from theNSF. Stevens' participation in the NJ Center for Software Engineering, a $500,000 research activity, was renewed. On March 15 Stevens hosted the first Symposium on Cyber Security and Trustworthy Software. Fifty researchers - from around the nation and the world - attended. A revised curriculum will greet all undergraduate majors starting in Fall 2002, as two new undergrad "concentrations" will introduce students to two booming fields: networking and game design.

Along with these, the department offers a broad education in the liberal arts for all undergraduates. physics & • • englneerl g physics School of Science & Arts The Department of Physics and Engineering Physics at Stevens Institute ofTechnology has developed a new undergraduate curriculum that aims to attract students who are intrigued by the possibility of applying their mastery of basic physics concepts in innovative ways. Classroom instruction is combined with hands-on research experience in one of several state-of-the-art research laboratories (Photonics Science and Technology, Optical Communication and Nanodevices, Quantum Electron Science and Technology, ElectronDriven Processes and Plasmas, Light and Life). Perhaps the most differentiating feature of the new Stevens physics curriculum is a six-semester sequence of project-centered courses (SKIL: Science Knowledge Integration Ladder) in which students work on independent projects that foster independent learning, innovative problem solving, collaboration and teamwork, and knowledge integration under the guidance of a faculty advisor. A BS degree in physics from Stevens broadens the range of career opportunities beyond the pursuit of a traditional graduate degree in physics. Students have branched out into a variety of other disciplines such as chemistry, life science, engineering, or environmental science. The Chemical, Biology, and Materials Engineering Department offers a bachelor of engineering degree in chemical engineering, as well as in biochemical engineering. These degrees provide breadth and depth so that graduates of the program may enter many diverse fields, including: biotechnology, pharmaceutical manufacture, food processing, electronic materials, coatings and plastics, energy, waste management, and chemical manufacturing. Chemical engineering students are active in the Stevens chapter ofthe American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), which at a national level has a membership of about 50,000. Three of the chapter's students attended a regional conference held at Virginia Polytechnic University in March. This year the department contained 35 senior students, who, working of teams, completed a major design experience. Projects involved fuel cells, microreactor technology, plasma reactor development, biochemical manufacture, and hydrogen generation.

The civil engineer's role is to plan, design, and supervise the construction ofthese facilites. CE is one of the most publicly visible technical fields. It shares with military engineering the distinction of being the earliest of the engineering disciplines. CE not nly retains a strong relationship with the other branches, but continues to generate new areas of technology
Environmental Engineering has traditionally been taught as a branch of civil engineering concerned with the supply of safe drinking water and the sanitary disposal of municipal wastes. The field has expanded in recent years to include many new areas, such as the treatment of industrial and hazardous wastes. This has placed new demands on engineers to understand the fundamental environmental transformation processes which describe natural and engineered systems.

The Environmental Engineering Program is uniquely suited to provide this understanding. It is one of a few programs in the nation which Is specifically designed for this purpose at the undergraduate level. The program combines fundamental courses in chemistry and chemical engineering with basic and advanced environmental engineering courses given by the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Ocean Engineering. Students completing this program will have superior qualifications for the present job market, whether it be industry, consulting or government.

The mission of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is to provide students with the tools and skills necessary to understand and apply today's technologies and to become leaders in developing tomorrow's technologies. To this end, programs have been developed to ensure that students receive both fundamental knowledge in basic concepts and an understanding of current technologies. On the undergraduate level, the ECE department offers separate degrees for electrical and computer engineering. The faculty engage in a variety of res,e arch efforts that include telecommunications, information networks and systems, wireless data networks, network reliability, fiber optic networks, stochastic models, digital signal processing, image processing, computer architectures, VlSI microelectronics, fault tolerance, microelectromechanial components, advanced microsystems packaging, and systems integration. The research in the department focuses on broad areas that allow for disciplinary lines to be informal, as well as for interaction and cooperation between areas are to be commonplace. The department also interacts closely with the other departments in the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

The Mechanical Engineering Department provides its students an Integrated educational experience that is balanced in fundamental principles, design methodologies, and industrial experience, while promoting innovation and creativity. systems engineering & â&#x20AC;˘ â&#x20AC;˘ englneerln management School of Engineering The Information Age has produced profound changes in the engineering profession. Computers and modern telecommunications are reshaping the work place. Problems are no longer simple systems, but are now comprised of a system of systems crossing many traditional engineering disciplines. The Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management Department was created to respond to these challenges. Stevens has a long and rich tradition in the engineering management arena at the undergraduate level tracing its roots back to the first course in Business Engineering in 1897. The Bachelor of Engineering in Engineering Management program has been a leader in the field and has received numerous national awards since its inception. In response to changes in the global environment, on July 2000, a commitment was made by the institution to formalize what had been a program since 1986 with the creation of the Department of SEEM. Within two years of its conception, the department has 105 graduate students, 11 faculty, graduate programs in Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, an executive masters program and a healthy research program. The department has quickly developed a reputation as a leader in the systems engineering field. This reflected in the numerous shorts courses that have been taught over the last two years for industry and government. Clients have included IBM, Northrup Gruman, Lockheed Martin, the U.S. Department of Defense, and United Defense.

The Business Technology program differentiates itself by using "the unique characteristics of the Stevens intimate size, financial capital, corporate location and the ability to combine business with technology. It relates the continuity of a multi-year evolving Business Plan with a timed connective education in business, mathematics and science. The program exposes students to diverse technically related business as a leader and team member, which are furthered through exposure to technology realities in internships and mentoring with actual firms. The latest EBusiness techniques are integrated into the program, as well. This program was created to meet the significant and growing need for graduates who understand the interrelationship ofthe business world and the applied principles of technology. The brothers of Beta Theta Pi are once again taking active roles in campusJ holding eboard positions in the IFCJ IDCJ CSCJ and SGA. others havejoined the Photography ClubJ KhodaJ APOJ and SUMAC. Beta has also continued its commitment to the communitYJ sponsoring Habitat for Humanity and Adopt-A-Highway philanthropy events. In the wake of the 9-11J the brothers did not hesitate to volunteer manpower to the American Red CrossJ as they found themselves boosting morale by sorting the mail going straight to "Ground Zero" and helping moving supplies. The house has progressed since this year's graduating seniors first set foot in it. The Polar Bear Plunge : Jon tried to go in ...
Sigma Nu saw a lot happen this year. In the fallJ a group of brothersJ led by alumnus Rich GomezJ swept the talent show for the houseJs second consecutive win. This years mock boy, band act added a special appearance by brother Rqjon Tumbokon as Michael Jackson. Later in the year, the house opened its doors to members of the Stevens faculty for the Annual Thanksgiving Dinner.
The event allowed the
brothers to get to know their favorite professors and staff members better. In the spring the brothers participated in the Polar Bear Plunge (proceeds went towards the Special OIympics)J as well as in the Castle Point King (CPK) contest. The house was well represented at CPKJ as three brothers and one pledge competed. The 19,member strong candidate class is this chapter's largest in four yearsJ which means
"Apple Juice"-on-the -Stoop Night.

Saturday night at the Hee-Haw Convention.
In Phi Sigma Kappa (PSK) traditionJ the fall semester was spent spreading the word about the house and its ideals. PSK held its annual smokerJ a trip to the Comic Strip Live (NYC)J and a number of other events. The fraternity also took advantage of the unusually warm weather to hold weekly barbecuesJ open to the entire campus community. With the spring semester came pledge night and the wonderful experience of welcoming twelve men into the fraternity. PSK hopes that these pledges will learn to love and enjoy the fruits of brotherhoodJ as over a thousand Piskies have done at Stevens over the course of the last 103 years. FinallYJ it was with more than a tinge of sadness that the Piskies bid adieu to nine graduating brothers. Bill , Bryan , and Izzy making sure no boats dock around these parts.

Busy.. busy.. busy. That"s what the sisters of Phi Sigma Sigma have been this past year. Among other things.. the ladies were involved in quite a few philanthropic activities. The Third Annual Phi Sigma Sigma Talent Show.. co~hosted byJon bell of Z100.. raised over $3.. 500. Proceeds went to the NYFD 9~ 11 Relief Fund. The sisters participated in "'Make a Difference Day.. "" donating their time and labor at the Red Cross and the Food Bank. In addition.. other contributions included participation with the Red Cross Blood Drive and various community services through the Jersey Cares Volunteer Organization. The Phi Sig House is home to 21 sisters.. who take a great deal of pride in the 82 year old newly renovated house. Founded in 1982.. the Delta Zeta chapter held a 20th Anniversary Alumni celebration in February. The Phi Sigma Sigma sisters say goodbye to five graduating seniors this year. They wish these ladies good luck.. with success and happiness in the years to come!

Stevens Paintball Club The purpose of the Paintball Club is to allow students to participate in the exotic and quickly growing sport of paintball in a safe and low-cost environment without having to buy their own equipment. The club runs about two thirty-person trips a semester, and a few extra activities such as tournaments or exposition games over the summer. For a person who has never played paintball , the sport can best be described as a high-tech and high-speed version of Capture the Flag. Most of the games are played in the woods, and instead of physically tagging opponents, a player marks them with paint fired from the gun. Club members sometimes playa much faster and more regulated version of the sport, speedball , mainly used for tournaments and other competitions.

Stevens Institute of Technology has had its own chapter of the Society of Women Engineers for many years. During this time, the chapter has held numerous "networking nights", including one last year. As a result of this evening of food , speeches, and fun, students from Stevens and surrounding schools are able to develop relationships with professional engineers from nearby companies - relationships that often prove invaluable in today's competitive job market. Moreover, each semester, the Stevens SWE chapter coordinates at least one seminar with the Lore-EI Center, the center for women's support on campus. Previous topics have included "Dress for Success." Stevens SWE has also held various activities geared to developing friendships amongst the female engineering students at Stevens, by sponsoring bowling and pizza nights, organizing a women 's intramural volleyball team on campus, etc. As a result of these events, female students are given the opportunity to enjoy fellowship together while

AP Alpha Phi Omega is a co-ed service fraternity that has rapidly grown to over 80 members since its re-chartering in March of 2000. The primary purposes of the organization are to provide service, develop leadership, and promote friendship. APO organizes numerous service activities involving the Stevens community, Hoboken, and other local chapters. Some of the community service projects APO sponsors includes volunteering at soup kitchens, working with the local Boy Scout troops, park clean-ups , and helping to run various campus events. APO also hosted the Section 99 Conference, held in February of 2002, which involved a day of service projects and informative seminars .

Stevens Baseball finished the season strong by not only winning its first post-season game but by making its first appearance in the NCAA tournament. This team , which broke numerous records including most wins in a season at 21 , was lead by a strong core of seniors. Despite a slow start the Ducks finished the regular season by winning 20 of their last 30 games. This momentum was carried into the postseason when the team beat defending Skyline Conference champs SUNY Old Westbury in the semifinals and then knocked off Staten Island to earn a birth to its first NCAA tournament appearance in its 96 year history as a sport at Stevens. Seniors Phil Wolf, Tom Sobe, and Dave Riley all won post season honors and Coach John Crane was voted coach of the year by the Skyline Conference.

The 2001-2002 Men ' s Basketball Team suffered through a tough year, wrapping the season with a fall in the first round of the Skyline Conference. One of the year' s highlights, however, was the 1,000th Stevens career point scoring by senior Jeff Houser. Houser became only the seventh men ' s player in Stevens history to break the point plateau, while putting up a lay-up as under two minutes remained in the game.

The Women ' s Basketball Team had a recordbreaking season , as it racked up the longest winning streak ever held (10 games), the most number of wins in a season (20 wins), and and both regular and playoff WIAC Champions. As a result of their hard work throughout the season , the team received a bid to the ECAC Tournament - an accomplishment having occurred only one other time in the team's history . Individual team members brought home some other honors as well. Aracely "Cela" Cruz was named to the 1st Team Skyline Conference , as well as to the 2nd Team ECAC. Vanessa Williams joined the Conference 2nd Team. For her part, captain Erin Horner scored her 1,000th Stevens career point.

The Men 's Cross Country team had a record breaking season, becoming the first Stevens men's team to win a Skyline Conference Championship since Stevens joined the league. They also had top 3 team finishes at the Drew Invitational, Stevens Invitational , and Halloween Collegiate Classic . The 2001-2002 Men's Fencing Team with a senes of wins under its belt. The team defeated Lafayette and Haverford at the MACFA Conference matches , teams it had lost to for the past three years . At the ECFA Conference Championship , the team clinched its second consecutive title. The epee team won the MACF A Championship in its category . Seven Ducks qualified to compete n the NCAA MidAtlantic/South Regionals. Sophomore Andrew Bazil earned the second highest finish in Stevens history at epee by advancing to the finals and finishing in 12th. The Women's Fencing Team concluded its season with a trip to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals at Drew University. In epee , Lauren Fuchs placed at 17th, the highest regional placing in school history. Andrea Chimel , freshman , earned 28th in the same category, as 25th place at saber went to Teresa Bustamente. Juniors Jenn Haiao and Rensie Punsal finished 23rd and 24th at foil, as senior Amy Cheng placed 28th. Earlier, the Lady Ducks placed fifth overall and second in the NCAA Division III NIWFA Championships , and were granted over seven honors by the EWFC. The 2002 Men ' s Lacrosse Team picked up where last year's pace setting team left off. The team once again qualitied for the NCAA Tournament, after going undefeated in the Conference play for the second year in a row. To lead all post-season honors for the Ducks was Eric Reckdendwald who was named the Knickerbocker Conference Player of the Year. Also Elliot Dahood was the second consecutive freshman to earned Knickerbocker Rookie of the Year Honors. The team will find itself in unfamiliar ground next year when it will be forced to replace key players including the career ground ball record holder and team MVP, Justin Brinkerhoff, and defensive stalwart, Houssam Karam , due to graduation. The Women's Lacrosse Team, in its second year as a varsity program, continued to make leaps towards being a national powerhouse. This team, which only had a one senior member, set records in every team and individual offense category. While breaking the previous mark for games won , these Lady Ducks won the admiration of their fans . Senior Lisa Glick set the record for most ground balls in a game, season , and career, as well as that for most goals scored. These accomplishments and great attitude won her the MVP Award. Valerie Barnhart at the face off. Barnhart continued to play after the regular season as she was selected as one of the 15 players in a pool of 71 to compete in the Upper Atlantic Region at the National Women's Lacrosse Showcase. She was the only Division III player selected to compete for Team One, whose roster included women from Princeton , Penn State, LaSalle , Dartmouth , and the US National Team. Barnhart managed six goals and three assists.

The Men 's Soccer Team overcame much adversityt in the 2001 campaign. The team suffered defeats to regional and national powerhouses , earning a fourth seed to the Conference . However , the Ducks dominated the Skyline Conference, going on to earn its first berth to the NCAA Tournament. A big addition to the Ducks up frontwas freshman Josh Ottinger, who broke the school record for most goals in a season. " Josh was spectacular for us this season ," siad Asst. Coach Quintanilla . "Obviously he scored a lot of goals, but his greatest contribution was his ability to hold the ball up front and create opportunities for the other players." Josh was named Sky line Rookie of the Year.

The Women ' s Soccer Team enjoyed its tenth and best season at Stevens, as it made its first postseason appearance, and earned its second consecutive Skyline Championship, as well as its fourth WIAC title. Throughout the season , over 30 school records were broken. Among them was a IS-match winning streak and new team standards for goals , assists , and points. Melissa Shankweiler ,junior captain , became Stevens' all-time leading scorer, as sophomore goalkeeper Rommy Guevara ranked 15th at the national level for goals against average. The Women 's Swim Team wrapped up its 2001-2002 season with a tie for fifth place among all NCA Division III teams at the Metropolitan Collegiate Swimming Championships. At that same competition , the Lady Ducks posted eight Top Eight finishes. "Overall we had an incredible meet in which every member posted a personal best and placed in the Top 24 ," said Coach Nancy Bercaw. " Many of the coaches commented that Stevens is the team to watch in the future."

Sophomore Aracely Cruz and junior Alicia Fox earned first-team Skyline All-Star honors. Senior Helen Kim was named to the second-team. Head Coach Doug Brickel, having guided Stevens to its second consecutive Skyline crown, was named Skyline Coach of the Year.

The Men's Track and Field team had an excellent season this year. The team finished second at both the Albright Invitational and the Stevens/ Bergen Relays. Andrew DeLi so was named a CTC Conference All-Star in the 110 hurdles and qualified for the ECAC Division III Championships in the same event. Overall this season, two varsity records, six freshman relay records , and one freshman individual record were broken.

The Women ' s Track and Field team had its best season ever in its 5 year history. The team placed second at the Stevens Invitational, the Stevens/ Bergen Relays , and at the Albright Invitational. At the CTC conference meet, Melissa McAvoy was named a CTC Conference All-Star for race-walk finishing with a school record time. At the same meet, Karen O' Shea broke the school record in the 1500m and Anne Krone broke the school record in the 800m. Four varsity individual records , two varsity relay records , four freshman relay records , and three freshman individual records were broken during the season .

The Men's Volleyball Team had a very successful 13th year, accomplishing many goals of its goals . The team, led by the offensive tandem of Gerard Aro and Matthew Akers, defeated long time rival D'Youville. The Californian duo of Shane Pierson and Brian Woodworth helped propel the team to an outstanding conference record. Doug Clark and Scott Mooney led the team in blocks , often times shutting down the offense of their opponents. The season came to a close as the team was selected to participate in the inaugural appearance during Coach Dorywalski's term.
