STEVENS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY CASTLE POINT STATION HOBOKEN, NEW -JERSEY 07030 OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

Gentlemen: Congratulations on achieving one of the major accomplishments of your lifetime. Graduation from college completes your educational foundation which, we hope, will serve you well both in your professional career and in your personal life. You have earned our respect and admiration by exhibiting the qualities which have characterized the Stevens graduate through the years -- a dedication to learning and a capacity for consistent endeavor. We hope that you view your years at Stevens as only the beginning of a lifelong educational process and that you will continue to build upon the foundation you have received at the Institute. This, too, is my last year on the Stevens campus as President. Yet I expect to follow the college and the careers of its graduates with great interest and enjoyment. Others on the campus who have watched your progress over the past four years will also take a keen interest in your activities. We hope that you, too, will continue to be involved with Stevens, to give it your interest and support and the benefit of your experience. I am sure that the faculty and your many friends at the Institute join me in wishing you success and happiness in the days and years ahead. Sincerely, /

.~-~/~ Jess H. Davis President

PHI SIGMA KAPPA When a young man enters Stevens, he is embarking upon what may be the four most important years of his life. During the next four years, he is to be groomed for his chosen way of life, whatever it may be. Iota Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa was established at Stevens in 1899, and since then has taken upon herself to develop qualities of leadership and responsibility in each person that joins her brotherhood . The success of Iota may be seen in the many activities the brothers are involved in on campus. We have brothers on the Student Council, Honor Board, Varsity squash, tennis, soccer and basketball and I.F.e. Social. Among the other fraternities, Iota has distinguished herself by being fourth in scholarship and second in basketball. Social development has not been neglected, as seen in our numerous parties. Our Friday night parties always kept the weekends active. Saturday nights were

reserved for theme parties such as, Shrimp and Beer, Pajama Parties, New Year's Eve, Winter Carnival's Cartoon Party and Spring Sports' Polynesian Party. In addition, semi-annually we have our Iota Nite where family and friends join together for an evening of food, drink and fun. But the real value of Iota is to be seen in the day-to-day life of the brotherhood . Whenever someone has a problem either scholastic or personal, he always has thirty-two brothers to listen and give the best help they can. Together we have mourned the death of a brother, and celebrated when one of our married brothers presented us with a "nephew." No one can leave Iota without being affected by any of these situations. When a man leaves Stevens, he is ready for the 9 to 5 part of his day, but when he leaves Iota, he is fully prepared for the other 16 hours.

THETA XI Gamma chapter of Theta Xi was founded on February 20, 1874 making it the first fraternity at Stevens. Theta Xi offers a non-stereotype brotherhood, active in IFC as well as Stevens activities. Last year, TX provided the IFC president, vicepresident, and Ways and Means and Scholarship Chairman, along with members on many varsity teams. The purpose of Theta Xi is to provide a college home environment for its active members in which fellowship and alumni guidance lead to wholesome mental, moral , physical, and spiritual growth . Theta Xi actively supports college . and community efforts to make individual members more mature and chapter groups more useful units of society. Through its alumni and undergraduate leadership, Theta Xi endeavors to assist each member to develop: 1 . intellectual curiosity that assures the highest scholarship rating con-

76

sistent with his ability. habits that lead to better mental and physical health. 3. sincerity in his association with otbers and confidence in himself. 4 . responsibility to chapter, college, community and country . 5 . leadership that comes from Practicing the principles of democratic self-government. 6 . interests and activities outside regular scholastic studies that employ spare time to advantage. 7. spiritual understanding that provides a reservoir of strength to draw upon when faced with conditions beyond comprehension. The ability of the brotherhood to work together harmoniously toward common goals has been one major factor that has kept Theta Xi a leader in the Stevens community through the years. 2.

DELTA TAU DELTA Delta Tau Delta is a home away from home, a strengthening of character and personality. The spirit of Rho Chapter is typified by active participation in scholastics, sports and activities. 1972 saw the 18th consecutive All Sports Trophy as well as the Gear and Triangle Activities Trophy (7 out of last 8 semesters) reside in the House. Scholastically, we ranked third on campus. But then . . . the parties, resounding Wales calls, the trip to Canada, the Christmas parties, the lump who played Santa Claus, moving from mystery meat and greasy coasters to roast duck and filet mignon, Pledge Day, Earth Day, Parents' Day, Sergio ' s summer parties, Rho Ball, from acceptances to college to job rejection . . . just some vivid recollections of four years where individuals working through the spirit of the House, bettered themselves and derived more from the experience of Stevens.

78

The Chi Phi Fraternity was founded in 1824 at Princeton and thus has the distinction of being the oldest social Fraternity in the country. There are now over 45 active chapters at the most prominent colleges and universities in the country. Mu Chapter at Stevens was founded in 1883. Its present home, known as Green Gate, was acquired in 1914. Mu has long been known for its leadership and activity in school affairs. Brothers of Chi Phi have held closs offices, played varsity sports and are active in Tau Beta Pi and Pi Delta Epsilon. Among Mu ' s other assets are a strong Notional, on active Alumni Association and a very close brotherhood, who are building the strongest of friendships. Socially, Chi Phi is second to none. Parties are held most every weekend, many of which will not soon be forgotten. The Winter Carnival and Spring Sports Weekends are always well attended and a good time is had by all. SIGMA PHI EPSILON Obtaining a college education can be one of the greatest experiences a person can have in his lifetime. However, a good college education barely starts in the classroom. The true value of our time spent at Stevens lies in the student's daily experiences which prepare him to face head on, with confidence, the complexities of todays changing world. The men of Sigma Phi Epsilon have come to the realization that the best way to go about preparing oneself properly for today's society is to accept guidance from others while at all times relying on one's own good judgement. Sigma Phi Epsilon came to the Stevens campus in 1938, thirty seven years after its founding at Richmond College in Richmond, Virginia. Its history speaks for itself and today it finds itself the second largest national fraternity with over 180 chapters. New Jersey Alpha takes pride in Stevens and, consequently, its members take an active part in the leadership, scholastic and social life of the campus. Participation in I.F.e. sports, attendance at Winter Carnival, as well as the yearly Winter Carnival display demonstrate the

84

spirit and enthusiasm contained in the Brothers of Sig Ep. The past year was a successful one for Sig Ep. It saw the arrival of new members to the house, a visit from the alumni on Founder's Day, a memorable Winter Carnival, a successful year of sports, an unforgettable Sweetheart Weekend, and finally, the graduating of our senior Brothers, who will never be forgotten . Among the awards it won this year are the Winter Carnival Display Trophy, a national award for the best chapter newspaper, and the one we are most proud of, their fifth consecutive Outstanding Chapter Cup, which shows that New Jersey Alpha is considered a leader on a national level. The Brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon are true Brothers in every sense of the word . In all their activities their one main objective is to show a strong, sincere feeling of Brotherhood. Sig Eps at Stevens, and throughout the nation will continue to grow and be recognized because Sig Ep contains the ideals that Fraternities were founded upon : virtue, diligence, and Brotherly love.

85

SIGMA NU

During the 1971-72 academic year, the Gamma Delta chapter of Sigma Nu played an important part in the activities of Stevens. Sigma Nu enjoyed a fine rushing season, pledging 23 men, the largest number on campus. Sigma Nu also placed well academically, finishing third among the ten houses and well above the all college average. Along with scholarship, Sigma Nu was active socially and athletically. The highlights of the

social

calendar are the

White Rose Ball, which is a dinner dance with our alumni and our annual BrotherFaculty Thanksgiving dinner. Brothers also took an active role on varsity teams such as fencing, bowling, lacrosse, squash and soccer. Sigma Nus are involved in many other activities such as the STUTE, SMITE, ASM, ASME and Tau Beta Pi . Sigma Nu exists under the honor system, where there are no fines or penalties; each brother is treated as a man and consequently knows and accepts responsibility. Brotherhood, friendship and happiness characterize Gamma Delta chapter and make its members proud to be Sigma Nus.

PI LAMBDA PHI

The Pi lambda Phi Fraternity was founded as a brotherhood devoted to the elimination of prejudice. At New Jersey Theta, we feel that we have taken a modern approach to basically the same idea. We are a fraternity of many varied interests, brought together through understanding . Our fraternity is very close -knit because everyone has respect for one another's opinions and interests. To further this type of brotherhood, we have initiated an open pledge rule, which we feel will enable us to find others with the same ideals. Members of our fraternity are engaged in class offices, athletics and various activities around campus. On the less serious side, the brothers engage in activities such as house filmed dramas, the Pi lam TV Room String Blues Band, and wars between the sophomores and the senior vigilantes. Whether we're doing something academic or just for fun, the brothers of Pi lambda Phi are working together to make the years at Stevens memorable.

ALPHA SIGMA PHI

Alpha Sigma Phi is the tenth oldest national social fraternity, founded on December 6, 1845, to oppose the cliquish sophomore society, Kappa Sigma Theta. Because the Sophomore society so actively attacked the young association, the Yale administration banned Alpha Sigma Phi from the college, forcing her to become an underground organization called Delta Beta Xi. At the same time she began expanding to other colleges. Although, in 1875, Yale banned all sophomore societies from the campus, Alpha Sigma Phi lived at Delta Chapter, Marietta College, and returned to Yale in 1910. The Class of 1972 at Alpha Tau Chapter trusts that the future Brothers and Pledges of the fraternity will perpetuate the purposes and ideals of this association in this, a difficult time for social fraternities. The "Old Gal" has weathered 126 years of existence. Why? Our open motto is: "Causa latet Vis Est Notissima The Cause is Hidden, the Results are Well Known."

with 5 goals and 3 assists for the season . While it was the offense that received most of the credit for Tech's first winning season in nine years, the defense should not be overlooked. Co-captain Ray Mongillo '72 led a rugged backfield that gave up less than 2 goals per game on the average. Goalkeepers Rick Warfield '73 and Mark Uhrin '74 combined for a total of 96 saves in the 9 games played and junior AI Blagojevic provided the experience necessary to make the defense click. In addition, Pete Crespan, Vinny Tullo, and Tom Mcinerney, all sophomores, added beef to the Red and Gray's back line. But the story isn't over yet. In looking back over the season, one notices that the Stevens kickers did not lose even once at home during the 1971 campaign . In fact, it was in Hoboken that the team put on its greatest shows. In the five home games played, the Engineers had two 7-goal games, two 6-goal games, and one 5-goal game (total 28 goals), while visitors managed only 6 goals. Noteworthy, too, is the fact that seven Stevens players received Honorable Mention on the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Star Team. Those receiving the honor included Simonson, Cortese, The 1972 Stevens Varsity Soccer season was one that will not be forgotten for a long time to come around Castle Point. Without fear of contradiction, one could even say that the '71 team put forth the greatest team effort in modern Stevens history. The underlying cause of most of the team's success can be traced to an explosive offense, led by Ken Simonson '73 and 1971 co-captain Mick Cortese '73 . Simonson set a modern Tech record by denting the nets on 14 different occasions, and tied the individual game record by scoring 4 times in the Stute's 6-2 victory over Wagner in

Bendeck, Mongillo, Warfield, Hans Liao '73 and Pak Tam Chung '74 . Simonson was also named to the All Pa., N. J., Del. all-star team (Honorable Mention). In addition, 1971

brought Coach Jim

Singer his 100th victory as coach here at Tech a fact that netted him a cold shower and a handsome plaque from his spirited team members. All in all, then, 1971 was a happy year for the Varsity Soccer team. The players wish to thank Tom lisa '72 for his efforts as manager of the team, and they would like to express their gratitude to all of those in the Stevens community who provided moral and vocal support throughout the season. 1972 co-captains Rick Warfield and Ken Simonson are optimistic about next year's prospects, even

the opening game of the season . Meanwhile, Cortese was busy doing some goal-scoring (8 goals) and playmaking of his own (7 assists). Even though Simonson and Cortese accounted for 22 of the team's 34 goals scored during the course of the season, seven other players did figure in on the scoring most notable among these being senior Otto Bendeck.

BASKETBALL The Stevens cagers went through a very successful season, winning 11 out of 16 games. Some of the teams' outstanding accomplishments included tying a modern record for wins in one season and setting a modern record for consecutive victories. Stevens won five in a row in December. Stevens also won its first tournament ever, by defeating NCE in the finals of the NCE Pre-Christmas Tournament. The main thrust of Tech's offense was shouldered by 6'2" Tom Cress. The talented junior worked on the inside of 26.7 points per game in addition to pulling down 14.9 rebounds per game. He tied a modern Tech record for field goals in one game (15) and also established a modern record for average points per game. Tom was a second team selection on the N.J. All-State College Division team and finished 14th in the nation in scoring. Tom's 26.7 points per game was good enough to lead all New Jersey collegiate players. In a team sense, a number of players figured in Tech's move out of mediocrity. Sophomore Tom Mcinerney, a 6'3" center averaged 14 points and 12 rebounds per game and shattered a seasonal rebounding record with 222 caroms. 6'2" senior captain Art Keltos closed out his career at Stevens with some outstanding shooting in the last four games. Keltos was also invited to play in a post season all-star game pitting the Metropolitan seniors against a similar team made up of ballplayers from Long Island colleges. Sophomores Greg Gemgnani and Augie Morris also made their presence felt with their scoring, ball handling, and their defense. Gemgnani averaged close to 10 points per game while Morris averaged 8 points per game. Juniors Steve Stalgaitis, Marty Ketterer and John Mocchiaverna along with sophomore George Gevaza and senior Humphrey Stokes contributed heavily to the team's success in the role of substitutes.

SQUASH The squash team had a very successful season. Coach Frank Partel's men won 6 out of 9 matches, recording their best season since 1968-69. Tech put together a three match winning streak in December and was only outclassed by Navy and Stony Brook during the year. Co-captains Brian Ross and Pete Foster, playing in the one and two positions, had good seasons. Ross ended up with a 6-3 match record while Foster was 5-4 . Junior Dave Garcia was 6-3. Sophomore Greg Klar had a good year playing in the fourth spot. Junior Jeff Bestermann, sophomore Dan Monahan and senior Paul Scagnelli, all playing at the bottom of the ladder, had better than average records. Foster, Ross, Garcia, Klor, Scagnelli and Bestermann all participated in the NISRA championships held at Army. This experience should help the returning players next season.

FENCING Any time a Stevens Tech fencing team loses more than two matches it's unusual. From past successes, the Stute fencers seem to be expected to do better. However, when the 1971-72 season is reviewed, it's difficult to deny the fact that it was indeed a successful season. Coach Cliff Kirmiss' fencers won 6 out of 9 meets and climaxed their season with a strong showing in the MASC championships. Tech finished second to Temple in the Tournament as the Owl fencers scored 55 points as compared to 52 for Stevens. Co-captain senior Pete Furino had a 17-9 regular season bout record in foil and finished second in the championships. Junior Tom Szeluga also had an impressive 18-7 record and helped Tech with the foil team trophy in the tournament. In epee, senior co-captain Bob Brady won place honors for Tech in addition to posting a solid 12-5 record . Ron Krukowski, a junior, was 12-9 and instrumental in Stevens drive to win the team trophy in epee at the championships. Senior Gary DeGaetano was 20-7 in sabre and was ably supported by junior Bob Eng who was 17-12. Eng finished third in the conference championships.

Although the lacrosse team ended up with a 4-6 record, it does not tell the entire story of their season. Co-captain Mike Mennone was asked to move from defense, a position he excelled in last year, to mid-field, a position he never played before. Also Steve Stalgaitis and Tom Mcinerney were asked to play defense. Besides these changes, the schedule was very tough and a couple I games could have gone either way. Co-captain Ed Briggs was the offens leader, leading the team in goals (with 19) and in assists (with 14). Ed's biggest games were against CCNY in which he scored 7 goals and against Muhlenburg in which he assisted on 6 goals. Three year man Bob Benoit turned in his usual excellent goal tending job finishing up the year with 1 10 saves. Other excellent performers on defense were Joe lechtanski, Tom Mcinerney, Tom Walsh (although slowed by injuries) and

160

Steve Stalgaitis. Other individuals helped the team out at various times throughout the season. Ed Noland and Mark Ahlstrom scored 3 and 5 goals respectively in helping defeat Muhlenburg while Joe Altongy's 2 goals was the margin of victory over N.Y. Maritime.

TENNIS

The tennis team enjoyed a successful season but it could have been better considering three matches were rained out. The two matches that they lost (vs. Fordham and vs. Upsala) were against teams that went undefeated throughout the season. In fact, Upsala won team and individual honors at the MAC Championships this year. Individually, Tech 's MR. EVERYTHING Tom Cress who captained this team, finished up with a 3-2 record in the number 1 position. Tom accomplished this although being sick throughout the season. Number 5 man Pete Crespan was undefeated while number 6 man Phil Kapp was 4 -2 . In doubles, brothers Wayne and Milt Oliver compiled a 4-2 log. TECH VOLLIES . . . Coach Jako will not

Two words can describe this year's baseball season rain and injuries. Three games were rained out while ace pitcher Dave Garcia only pitched 24 innings because of an arm injury and a leg injury. But in those 24 innings, Dave compiled a 2-0 log and a 1.17 earned run average. In fact in the last game of the season, Dave spun a three hitter and struck out 1 3 in defeating NCE. Offensively only one man hit all year long Paul Sander. Paul hit .400 for the season and drove in most of the runs scored by Tech. In one game however, the silenced bats of Tech woke up and pounded 5 Pratt pitchers in setting a record for the most runs scored in one game by a Tech baseball team.
