Out & About

Greetings from Christina... Hello and welcome to the summer edition of Wallace’s Words. Isn’t it lovely to have some warmer weather at last? And with daylight saving now we are looking forward to long summer evenings. I hope you have enjoyed the wonderful daffodils that are around the village. Our gardeners planted them several weeks ago and they have been an absolute delight to see. Another highlight was the beautiful cherry trees in full bloom. Spring and summer are always a very pretty time for our Julia Wallace gardens. Recently we enjoyed a Tai Chi class in the atrium with our physiotherapist, Chris. That was something new and different for us all to try and many of you really enjoyed it.

We are always looking for new ideas to add to our activities calendar. So, if there is something that you would really like to try, have a look on our activity calendar (maybe something there will interest you), or chat to our activities team. We love trying new things, so let’s have some fun with some new and different ideas to ‘have a go’ at. Please pop in if you are around the village. It would be great to see you. Kind regards,

Christina Brenton Village Manager

Men’s Club For the ladies

Our Men’s Club here at the village is extremely popular.

We held a very successful ladies’ afternoon Residents and friends of the village browsed the variety of items such as jewellery, scarves, shoes, clothes and even cleaning cloths that were on sale.

The men greatly enjoy crafting things such as stepladder planters, trays, wine racks, wooden wheelbarrows and many more! Our stepladder planters that they so kindly crafted for the village are ready and we can’t wait to fill them with spring plants.

We enjoyed our regular Happy Hour afterwards, most appreciated after our retail therapy!

The club has become even busier with the leadup to Christmas. Most of the items they produce will be available to buy at our next village market, so be on the lookout for a great handmade bargain!

Ryman chefs take top prize At the recent New Zealand Hospitality Awards, our in-house Chefs; Steve Iraia and Paul Korunic, took the top two prizes.

also pleased to go one better than last year. “We’ve got the two top positions in the country, which is a brilliant result.’’

Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.

Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.

Steve came second in last year’s competition.

Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.”

Village chefs serve up more than 10,000 meals a day to our residents. Chefs prepare the food fresh on-site, with three main course choices, including a vegetarian option.

Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus. Paul, Chef at Anthony Wilding village in Christchurch for the last four years, was

myRyman rollout crosses the finishing line Our myRyman electronic care system has been rolled out to all our villages in New Zealand.

If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker. We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers. There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful

musical score, to having a go at making themed-decorations for display. The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 31 October, and finishing in Auckland on 15 December.

Want to see a show near you? Contact your village reception for exclusive Ryman discounts on tickets!

myRyman is a robust electronic care system located in each resident’s room. It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork. In 2015, Chief Operations Office Barbara ReynenRose went looking for an electronic care

system but couldn’t find one she liked, so Ryman decided to build its own version.

“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.” Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the project would keep Ryman Healthcare at the forefront of aged care. “What we have achieved is very, very rare. To take a concept that involved a complete change in how people work and make it into a system that is operable 24/7 in a care operation is incredible. “It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.’’

Resident Profile

Meet Jill

My siblings and I attended the Palmerston North Girls and Boys High. We had a wonderful childhood despite the outbreak of WWII. At 16 years old, I left school and worked at Hodder & Tolley as a secretary to the managing director. A few years later I met a lovely man, Bill Morrison, who was to become my husband. We had a wonderful life together. Bill was a trained pharmacist and eventually he opened his own pharmacy where we worked for nearly 40 years. Family life was very busy as we were also blessed with five children! In 2005, we sold the pharmacy and retired. For a few years we enjoyed our retirement before Bill sadly passed away in 2007.

I decided to move into the village this year, and I simply adore the place. Everyone is so friendly! Hello, my name is Jill Morrison and I moved into my lovely townhouse at Julia Wallace six months ago.

I decided to move into the village this year, and I simply adore the place. Everyone is so friendly, and the staff are amazing. I like meeting new people and making friends. There is so much to do and so many events to attend, which keeps me very busy!

I was born at Paraparaumu Beach on the Kapiti Coast on 15 May 1933. My family moved to Palmerston North when I was three years old.

I have lots of interests and many friends here, so I am very happy that I have made Julia Wallace my home.

Wellness Month

Musical Moments

We celebrated Wellness Month with a special Tai Chi class followed by a meditation session. It was a great afternoon learning more about the benefits of Tai Chi and meditation. Something we can do every day.

We have a great association with Palmerston North Boys High School. Recently the school choir and band visited the village for a fantastic afternoon of music. Our residents truly enjoy their company and we are excited for their next performance.

Staff Profile

Introducing Christine Happy anniversary Residents enjoyed a fantastic afternoon of entertainment when the Taradale RSA visited the village to celebrate their 50th anniversary. The costumes were wonderful, and the show was very

professional. Everyone had such a fantastic time that we can’t wait for them to visit us again sometime next year!

Hello, my name is Christine Larking. I have worked at Julia Wallace in the special care and hospital unit before stepping into the role as serviced apartment unit coordinator after Margaret Broadbent retired. As a long-time resident of Palmerston North, I feel like I know the city well! I attended Nga Tawa High School and I was very active as a child, especially in athletics.

Pictured: The performance delighted everyone.

I joined the team three years ago and I am proud to say that I am part of the Ryman family.

Wellington, and my third is busy travelling. My partner, Mark and I have two dogs, three cats and three chickens! When I am not working, I am involved in the Golden Oldies rugby and netball clubs. This is a very social sport and I enjoy participating. I have also made many good friends at the clubs. I look forward to talking to you at the village!

Out & About During September, two vanloads full of excited independent and serviced apartment residents travelled to Makoura Lodge in Apiti for a wonderful lunch and tour. The family who own the lodge have been on the land for five generations and we heard some fantastic stories about life on the farm throughout the last century. The residents thought that the food was wonderful, and the mulled wine was enjoyed by many next to a roaring fire. It was so nice and cosy! We all had a very memorable, fun filled day trip.
