Greetings from Nicola... Hello, and welcome to the winter edition of Rowena’s Rambler. With winter upon us, we marked the shortest day of the year with a spectacular midwinter celebration. The sumptuous feast was enjoyed by our residents as we look forward to the days gradually getting longer and warmer. It has been a busy few weeks at the village with many great activities and outings. Among the activities we held were Anzac Day, Mother’s Day and we were even honoured to see Elvis in the building! In other news, we have held relatives’ meetings for our care centre next of kin. The meetings were well attended and are a wonderful way of providing feedback.

Our café continues to be a favourite spot for our residents and their families to visit, and we also recently welcomed Noelene to our café. Noelene is working Sunday to Friday and she is a very experienced baker with an extra dash of a smile – a winning formula. Please feel free to pop in for a chat – my door is always open. Kind regards,

Nicola Keast Village Manager

Wine time An Italian wine tasting hosted by Joelle Thompson proved to be a hit for our residents and guests who attended. Six wines were featured and attendees had the opportunity to win a bottle. It was a fantastic afternoon with great company! Townhouse residents Alison King, Isobel Corbin, Adrienne Sheddan and Robin Tate. Julie

Let’s rock! During July our village centre was transformed into a 1950s paradise for our Rock ‘n’ Roll event. Staff dressed up in spectacular costumes, straight out of the Elvis era! The whole village was buzzing with different activities related to Rock ‘n’ Roll. Elvis also made an appearance and graced us with his fantastic singing while professional Rock ‘n’ Roll dancers performed for the residents. We also set up a 1950s ice cream parlour in our care centre so that the residents could enjoy a treat while watching our staff perform. Residents enjoyed the movie Grease, with popcorn and drinks. The residents loved it and so did we! Above: Activities Coordinator Dianne Thompson shares a special moment with Elvis. Right: Sales Advisor Julie Crofts with Elvis.

It’s got to be

good enough for Mum In May 2018 Kevin Hickman announced he was standing down from the board of Ryman, ending 34 years of service at the company. There is no doubt that Ryman Healthcare would not be the company it is today without Kevin, and everyone at Ryman wishes him all the best with his retirement. The Ryman story began back in 1983, when Kevin was a former policeman turned private detective. He was asked to investigate a resthome fire in Christchurch, and he did not like what he saw. “The fire was in an old villa and there were four people to a room all with shared toilets,’’ Kevin recalls. “To me it was crazy, the standards were so poor. But that’s how resthomes were in those days.’’ Kevin would never dream of putting his mother into a place like that if she needed to go into care. “I thought, what would I want for Mum?” And so, Ryman’s philosophy that care has to be “good enough for Mum” was born. Kevin teamed up with John Ryder, an accountant, and together they made a dynamic pair. Ryman – a combination of Ryder and Hickman – Healthcare was registered and they bought their first property to convert into a resthome in 1984.

“I thought, what would I want for Mum?” As well as providing care that was better than anywhere else, the company had to be sustainable, with its systems constantly refined and improved upon. The size of the villages and the facilities offered may have changed over the past 30 years, but Ryman’s core philosophy remains the same. Care is still at the heart of what we do. And it’s got to be good enough for Mum. Or Dad!

Lawrence Slow cooked Italian meatballs are a resident favourite at our Weary Dunlop Retirement Village. It’s a hearty dish that blends well with our new Harvest menus, and residents love the texture and flavour. Furthermore, it’s a healthy option and is easy to prepare. You simply combine the ingredients and let the oven do the cooking – leaving more time to spend with your loved ones. Weary Dunlop chef Lawrence with resident Enid McCauley

Meet Bill

At 17, I started flying at the Gore Aero Club under the guidance of Ian Ritchie. Ian also gave me my first flying job at Ritchie Air Services, doing scenic and joy rides. I then saved up, and bought my first plane, a Tiger Moth. I was then offered a job by Tim Wallis. I trained to fly helicopters for Luggate Game Packers. Eventually, I purchased the fleet with two others and we changed the name to South West Helicopters. During this time, I carted crayfish, carried out avalanche bombings, participated in over 500 search and rescue missions and volunteered as a firefighter for 25 years. I was honoured to be made a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1997.

Hello, my name is William (Bill) Black and I am a hospital resident here at Rowena Jackson. I was born on 18 August 1943. I wasn’t very academic growing up, but I had a passion for all things aviation. I got my first taste of flying in the spring of 1957. At the Alexandra Blossom Festival, at the age of 14, I paid 10 shillings to go for a joy ride in a Cessna 172. I loved it so much that I lined up for another go!

In 2014, I was also honoured to be awarded the Jean Batten Memorial Trophy for my contribution to New Zealand Aviation. My wife Shirley and I have had a wonderful life together, and I find myself at Rowena Jackson after a life full of great adventures. Pictured: Bill during one of his missions in the late 1980s. Around the world Our independent and serviced apartment residents boarded ‘Air Ryman’ for a special fine dining evening. The passengers visited several locations along this culinary journey. First stop, Bluff, for a delicious oyster soup before departing for Tokyo, Japan to explore the history of sushi and get a taste too!

The next stop was Texas, US, for some spare ribs and corn, then off to Morocco for their famous lamb. The final destination was none other than Paris for their incredible crepes. Pictured: Our staff dressed up in uniforms and kimonos for the occasion.

Ready, steady...roll!

Celebrating Matariki

Our resthome residents were recently challenged to make the best cheese rolls. It was a battle of the sexes but in the end, there was no clear winner! However everyone loved eating the rolls!

This year, our Salisbury hospital residents celebrated Matariki with a performance of Maori and English songs. Kitchen assistant ¯ Sharne Knight also taught residents to weave flax, and her children performed a kapa haka.

Introducing Sue

My passion is to care for dementia patients, so I took the opportunity to work in the special care unit.

Hello, my name is Sue O’Brien and I am proud to have worked for Rowena Jackson for nearly 19 years.

started my registered nursing career in the Salisbury hospital wing and then the O’Byrne hospital wing.

I joined the team in 1999 as the townhouse care assistant. However, one of my passions is to care for dementia patients, so I took the opportunity to work in the special care unit. In 2007, I decided to become the serviced apartment coordinator.

Feeling like I needed another challenge, I started working in the Edinburgh resthome wing this year. I love being a part of the resthome team.

In 2013, I received my Bachelor of Nursing at the Southern Institute of Technology and

I thoroughly enjoy working at Rowena Jackson and I am so thankful to Ryman for all the professional development opportunities they have provided me over the years.

Taste test a winner! Our independent and serviced apartment residents have been enjoying our baking contests. It was a tough competition for our sponge cake bakers and we decided that the best way to judge the cakes was by popular vote. The residents had to vote on presentation and taste. The presentation award went to resident Joan Devery for a coffee sponge cake covered in chopped nuts. Resident Averil Croft took the overall winning spot for a fabulous four-egg sponge cake! It was a fantastic afternoon that everyone enjoyed. Pictured: From left; Jimmy Pickles, Shirley Keyes, Averil Croft, Loy Lindsay, Ernie Nicholson, Joan Devery and Alan Richardson
