Greetings from Dean... Hello and welcome to the summer edition of the Hillary Herald. Spring has sprung, and the village looks amazing with a riot of colour and new growth in the gardens. We are also thrilled to have Rae Duncan join us as our lead gardener. Her team has already been working hard and it is reflected in the stunning gardens. Over the last few months, we have had some fantastic guest speakers and entertainment including Phil Gifford, The Black Pepper Fashion Show, and the NZSO talks. In September we held the Art Showcase weekend. There were so many beautiful paintings and works of art to view, and everyone enjoyed

wandering through the many exhibits. From the Friday night opening and onwards, this event was one not to be missed. In the coming months the village has many other events to look forward to including celebrating the Melbourne Cup, Sir Ray Avery, The Dame Malvina Major Foundation and Rebecca Nelson. As always, please don’t hesitate if you have any questions, my door is always open. Kind regards,

Dean Jackson Village Manager

High Tea party Recently our residents invited their friends to a spectacular high tea to learn more about retirement living. The afternoon was spent in great company with delicious treats and wonderful cups of tea. Everyone walked away with a little more knowledge of our vibrant community. Becky and Pauline

Art Showcase It was a tough choice for judge Greg Moyle at this year’s Bartizans Art Showcase held at Edmund Hillary. The seasoned art collector had to choose from about 300 paintings before deciding on a winner. Taking out first prize was Ken Garret for his ‘Yellow Light’ painting. Local MP Denise Lee joined Village Manager Dean Jackson to open proceedings on the Friday evening, attracting around 100 visitors on the night and an estimated further 600 over the weekend. With the final figures in, we are proud to announce that $2,500 was raised for Ryman’s chosen charity of the year, the Stroke Foundation. RYMAN E H T

If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker. We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers. There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful

musical score, to having a go at making themed-decorations for display. The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 31 October, and finishing in Auckland on 15 December.

Ryman chefs take top prize At the recent New Zealand Hospitality Awards, our in-house Chefs; Steve Iraia and Paul Korunic, took the top two prizes.

also pleased to go one better than last year. “We’ve got the two top positions in the country, which is a brilliant result.’’

Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.

Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.

Steve came second in last year’s competition.

Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.”

Village chefs serve up more than 10,000 meals a day to our residents. Chefs prepare the food fresh on-site, with three main course choices, including a vegetarian option.

Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus. Paul, Chef at Anthony Wilding village in Christchurch for the last four years, was

myRyman rollout crosses the finishing line Our myRyman electronic care system has been rolled out to all our villages in New Zealand. myRyman is a robust electronic care system located in each resident’s room. It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork. In 2015, Chief Operations Office Barbara ReynenRose went looking for an electronic care

system but couldn’t find one she liked, so Ryman decided to build its own version.

“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.” Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the project would keep Ryman Healthcare at the forefront of aged care. “What we have achieved is very, very rare. To take a concept that involved a complete change in how people work and make it into a system that is operable 24/7 in a care operation is incredible. “It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.’’

in Takapuna, before attending Epsom Girls Grammar School. When I left school, I worked with my father who was a travel agent. I remember well how I had to weigh in the passengers and their baggage, complete bills of lading and drive to Onerahi airport, which took more time than the flight to Auckland! In 1947, I met my Maurice and we eventually married in 1951. Together we raised three children and had many happy years together. Maurice sadly passed away in 2009. I have been involved in various women’s groups and was the president of the YWCA and Plunket in both Whangarei and Auckland. My other interest was machine knitting and I was part of knitting clubs nationally. My newest hobby, is watching the pigeon who is nesting on my balcony!

At the village there are many fantastic events to join in with and I have made some very good friends. The staff are also wonderful! Hello, my name is Pauline Reynolds and I was one of the first wave of residents to move into Edmund Hillary. In 2008 I moved into my independent apartment with my husband Maurice. I was born in Whangarei in 1927, and at seven years old I started boarding at St Anne’s School

Since moving into the village, I enjoy regular walks to the local shops and my current ambition is to get as far as the wine shop, which is a little further down the road. At the village there are many fantastic events to join in with and I have made some very good friends. The staff are also wonderful. I am very happy here.

Everyone gets to cuddle or pet the many animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, parrots, lambs, piglets and even a fawn! Being able to pet these

Mamma Mia!

Father’s Day

Several independent residents went to see MAMMA MIA! Here We Go Again, which everyone enjoyed. On the bus trip back to the village it was decided to have an ABBA themed Happy Hour and two weeks later we celebrated!

The serviced apartment and care centre residents celebrated Father’s Day with a western themed sausage sizzle. Muso Richard Skinner provided some entertaining, toe-tapping and knee-slapping music and the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Introducing Adnan

I am currently attending English language classes in order to become a registered nurse.

Hello, my name is Adnan Mahamad and I am a caregiver at Edmund Hillary.

I am currently attending English language classes in order to become a registered nurse.

I am originally from Somalia and moved to New Zealand in 2011 with my family. We moved to New Zealand because of the civil war and my mother knew that it wasn’t safe for us to stay. For a family of 10, it was a life changing decision for all of us.

Working at Edmund Hillary has been such a good experience. I feel appreciated by the management, staff and residents. It always feels great to work in an environment where people don’t judge you by one mistake but rather look at the good deeds that you do every day and help you improve in many ways.

I am pleased to say that I now consider New Zealand home.

Village Fair

Residents, their families and staff loved seeing the vintage cars up close and personal. Around 25 cars made the rounds with the oldest car being the 1903 Oldsmobile. The star of the show was the 1915 Renault Charabanc, and many took the opportunity to take a ride in it. Resident Fred Baker also brought his 1940 Buick and Norton motorbike. It was a fabulous day for all the petrol heads at Edmund Hillary! Above: The 1915 Renault Charabanc was a favourite amongst our residents.
