GUG PROPOSALS 2012 (Presented to the Social Affairs Committee 22/05/12)

The following are proposals that need to be taken into consideration immediately for the present and future well being of Gozo and the Gozitans. University of Malta -­‐ The option of sitting for exams in Gozo is to be strengthened and be available to all Gozitan Students. -­‐ Within the University, a room should be allocated to give the possibility to Gozitan students to leave their bags in a safe place. -­‐ The option of being able to submit an assignment and a library book at the Gozo Campus. -­‐ The re-opening of the Diploma in Facilitating Inclusive Education at the Gozo Campus. -­‐ The introduction of a new course, the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership at the Gozo Campus. -­‐ The introduction of Gozitan Studies. -­‐ The introduction of International Courses at the Gozo Campus. -­‐ More investment in video-conferencing and empowerment of this possibility, a pilot project should also be carried out. Public Transport -­‐ In Gozo, the route to Mgarr should be more synchronized with the ferry, especially in the mornings -­‐ A direct route, Cirkewwa – Mater Dei, is to be introduced and stationed at Mater Dei/University -­‐ The above mentioned direct route is to be synchronized with the ferry departures.

MSIDA -­‐ The Msida subway, especially the corridors are to be cleaned and have adequate light and security system. -­‐ More pedestrian friendly systems are to be introduced in relation to the Birkirkara By-pass, where students, both Maltese and Gozitans that live in areas such as Swatar, risk their life everyday when crossing. Such measures can be zebra crossing, traffic lights, tunnel or bridge. Gozo Channel -­‐ The introduction of a Studentʼs Fare system, where all non-working Maltese and Gozitan students will be eligible. -­‐ A Frequent Travel Scheme should be introduced with reasonable prices. -­‐ The introduction of priority boarding for Gozitan workers and students. -­‐ A route by a fast service, such as a catamaran, connecting Mgarr to Sa Masion should be introduced. -­‐ An online booking system. Renting -­‐ A monitoring system should be introduced to avoid abusive situations and tax evasion. Accessibility of Gozo -­‐ More studies should be carried out, not only with regards to the tunnel but also to options such as Airport, Freeport and Gozo Channel. -­‐ A task force should be set up with regards to the accessibility of Gozo where representatives of Gozitan youths, students and workers meet together with representatives of various concerned authorities such as the Ministry for Gozo, Gozo Channel, Transport Malta, Gozo Business Chamber and Gozo Tourism Authority.
