STATEMENT OF PURPOSE TO ENHANCE the quality of life on the University campus by providing a forum for a wide variety of live events, entertainment and cultural opportunities and by supporting University intercollegiate athletics in a manner that reaches the highest standards that can be set for NCAA athletic competitions.
TO SERVE as a hub and catalyst for the further and ongoing activity and development on the University campus and in Southern Rhode Island (South County).
TO ATTRACT and book a broad mix of events appealing to all segments of the University and South County communities, including concerts, family shows, intercollegiate athletic and sports exhibitions, public and trade shows and community and recreational programs.
TO PROTECT the University’s capital investment by insuring that the Facilities are operated in a manner which is orderly and efficient, and which safeguards the public trust, while providing the greatest overall financial return to the University.

MESSAGE FROM GENERAL MANAGER On behalf of Global Spectrum and the staff at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena, it’s my privilege to present our Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12) Annual Report. The 2011-12 season proved to be a remarkable year for the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena in entertainment for the URI and Southern Rhode Island communities. FY12 featured several new events that contributed to our overall success including hosting our first ever NCAA Women’s Basketball East Regional and our first ever Electronic Dance Music (EDM) concerts. Overall, FY12 proved our team’s ability to adapt to the ever-changing event landscape, allowing us to surpass the operating budget for both venues. The goal for the Ryan Center is to provide a variety of quality entertainment for URI, South County and all of Southern New England communities. These numbers are a direct reflection of the dedicated work from the seventeen (17) full-time staff members and over 200 part-time staff members. In 2011-12, we were able to show off the multi-purpose functionality, with more than 250,000 patrons walking through the Ryan Center’s doors to attend a variety of events. Some events included URI Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Rhode Island Interscholastic League High School Basketball Championships, Southern Rhode Island Home Show, NECA All-Star Cheer and Dance Championships, Steubenville East Catholic Youth Conference, University Open Houses and Welcome Days and University and High School graduations. In addition, we hosted Dana Carvey and Aziz Ansari comedy shows, the Piccadilly Circus, Lupe Fiasco and Third Eye Blind, along with our first ever EDM shows (Tiesto, Girl Talk, Avicii and Dayglow) and the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball East Regional. The community’s response was overwhelming for the NCAA tournament that featured our neighbors over at the University of Connecticut. The Kingston Regional site ranked 2nd in all regional sites in gross ticket sales with more than11,000 tickets sold over the course of the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight. Interest in hockey, skating and our public programs has never been greater at Boss Ice Arena. The nationally ranked URI Men’s and Women’s club hockey programs thrived this past season with the men winning their 2nd consecutive ESCHL Playoff Championship and the women finishing one of their best seasons, ranked 3rd in the country. The Southern Rhode Island Youth Hockey Association is the largest youth hockey program in the state, and five local high school hockey teams continue to experience success here at Boss Ice Arena. In addition, our Learn to Skate program once again registered record numbers as it teaches skating fundamentals to hundreds of children and adults annually. In addition to the commitment of our Global Spectrum staff, we understand that our success in 2012 would not have been possible without the support of our partners and tenants that make up the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena. We are proud of our strong relationship and support from the University of Rhode Island, especially Bob Weygand and Thorr Bjorn, and look forward to building on the success of 2012 in the future. The mission of the Division of Administration and Finance at the University of Rhode Island is to support the academic, research and outreach programs of the University, including fostering inclusion and community as a tool for success. The Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena fall within the Division of Administration and Finance and as such, play an integral part in campus operations and the enhancement of our student experiences. The multi-use and varied programming of both facilities display the outstanding way of fulfilling the outreach mission through the many concerts, family shows, hockey games and public programs, in addition to being the home of URI’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, and URI men’s and women’s club hockey programs. The quality of these programs and the attention given to the many campus departments who also utilize the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena are a source of pride to all users. Both facilities are well maintained, and your staff’s dedication to providing a clean, safe and fan-friendly experience is a great testament to the professional dedication your team exhibits on a daily basis. Those characteristics, in addition to Global Spectrum’s expertise and extensive knowledge of sports and the entertainment industry, no doubt contributed to the University and the Ryan Center’s successful collaboration to host the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball East Regional. This great event, which was the first of its kind at the University of Rhode Island, was a tremendous opportunity to showcase our University and the Ryan Center to the rest of the country. The Ryan Center Staff and the Department of Athletics at the University of Rhode Island continue to have a very collaborative working relationship. The great thing about having such a solid partnership is that we are able to provide what I believe is an incredible service and programming to our many constituents from the current student body, to faculty and staff, alums and the State of Rhode Island as a whole. This past year both the Athletics Staff under the leadership of Deputy Athletic Director, Gregg Burke and the Ryan Center staff under the direction of General Manager, Leah Becki took on the monumental task of hosting the 2012 NCAA Women’s East Regional at the Ryan Center. The amount of work leading up to this event was amazing and extremely time consuming. I watched with great pride over the course of this past year to see both groups work seamlessly on this initiative. After the event ended, the satisfaction and accolades the University received from the four visiting schools, the patrons and the NCAA was overwhelming. Athletics and the Ryan Center are looking forward to another very successful year. We are already working on joint facility enhancement projects as well as discussing ways to better serve our clientele. We are excited about our upcoming basketball seasons. I know that our fans are going to be in for a real treat when they see so many new faces out on the court starting with our new men’s basketball coach, Dan Hurley. RYAN CENTER FACILITY OVERVIEW
The Thomas M. Ryan Center,
located on the University of Rhode Island campus in scenic South County, is home to URI Men’s and Women’s Basketball programs, URI football teams’ locker room, along with athletic department offices, training rooms, players’ lounges and a souvenir store. The venue seats just under 7,700 for basketball, and over 5,500 for concerts, family shows, lectures and other community events.
provides a full range of high power sound to all seats in the venue including the concourse and Alumni Room, making it suitable for any event. In addition, 42 LCD High Definition televisions are located around the entire arena including; the lobbies, concourse levels, suite levels, meeting rooms and artist dressing rooms.
The Ryan Center boasts three tiers of seating in the arena to bring all 7,657 seats within 74-feet of the court, creating a frenzied atmosphere. Every seat in the Ryan Center has a chairback, including 1,120 club seats and features seven luxury suites that overlook both the Meade Stadium football field and the Ryan Center basketball court. The luxury seats are exclusive and fully furnished, offering VIP treatment for up to twenty people. Amenities include two state-of-the-art, full-color scoreboards with video capabilities. The house sound system, designed with acoustic provisions,

addition, Boss Ice Arena features a University team weight room, pro shop operated by 2nd Time Around Sports, Inc., and a hospitality room available for birthday parties, meetings, classes and corporate events. In the Fall of 2012, Subway will be opening a new franchise inside the Boss Ice Arena for all ice rink customers and the general public.
The Bradford R. Boss Ice Arena, located on the University of Rhode Island campus, is home to nationally ranked URI Men’s and Women’s Hockey programs, as well as four Rhode Island High School Hockey programs, the URI Intramural Hockey League, daily public sessions, various youth and adult hockey leagues and a Learn to Skate program. During the summer, Boss Ice Arena hosts a variety of hockey camps and clinics. Built in 2002, this state-of-the-art ice rink was the very first indoor ice facility in all of Southern Rhode Island. The Boss Ice Arena currently has seating capacity of 2,500, two University team locker rooms, four large public locker rooms, one female auxiliary locker room and an officials locker room. In
Boss is a great place for teams to practice, families to learn how to skate, watch a game, have a party and most importantly, have lots of fun in a safe, family-friendly environment. FACILITY VERSATILITY The University of Rhode Island opened the doors to the 7,657-seat, state of the art multi-purpose facility, Thomas M. Ryan Center in June of 2002 and fans have flocked to Kingston for men’s and women’s basketball games and several big name concerts in the state-of-the-art arena. Along with sporting events and concerts, the 200,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose facility was designed to host trade shows, conventions, speaking engagements, brunches, graduations and other community events with its array of versatile
spaces. The beautifully outfitted Alumni Lounge is available as a function room for parties up to 125 when events are not occupying the arena and is open to Athletic Donors during basketball games. The arena can also be subdivided to provide a halfhouse venue for smaller functions. The event floor seating retracts to provide space suitable for family shows or trade conferences. A portable stage is available for concerts and performance events and the event floor itself can seat up to 500 for a seated dinner.

UNIVERSAL USE OF A UNIVERSITY BUILDING URI CAREER FAIRS: Presented by URI Career Services in the Fall and Spring, the URI Career/Job Fairs welcomed over 3,000 students an opportunity to come face-to-face with a variety of employers and their representatives.
URI ADMISSION EVENTS: Part of URI Welcome Day Weekends in April, over 7,000 potential freshmen and transfer students along with their friends and families meet representatives from student services, oncampus organizations as well as deans and faculty from all colleges.
UNIVERSITY FAMILY WEEKEND BRUNCH: As a semi-conclusion to URI Family Weekend, URI President, Dr. David M. Dooley and his wife Reverend Lynn Baker-Dooley, host a brunch on Sunday morning on the Ryan Center floor for 400-500 URI students and their families following a weekend full of activities.
URI SEC EVENTS: The URI Student Entertainment Committee (SEC) has partnered with Global Spectrum over the last 10 years to bring numerous artists, comedians and personalities to the Ryan Center to entertain the students and URI community; with many of those shows selling out. This past season, the URI SEC brought Emmy Award winning comedian, Dana Carvey for URI Family Weekend, along with comedian Aziz Ansari and smash-up artist, Girl Talk this Fall. Grammy Award winning artists, Lupe Fiasco and Third Eye Blind with special guest Matisyahu rocked the house with throw-back performances.
URI GRADUATE SCHOOL AND CELS GRADUATION: The soft sounds of hundreds of footsteps entering the Ryan Center floor, all ringed by the resonant cheers and applause of families and friends; over 4,500 graduating students from URI Graduate programs and the College of the Environment and Life Sciences, and their families participated in URI Graduation Weekend 2012 at the Ryan Center.

SPOTLIGHT EVENTS During the 2011-12 season the Ryan Center hosted over 65 Non-URI Athletic events, welcoming over 150,000 Non-URI Athletic event patrons to several concerts, comedy shows, family shows, conference and trade shows, championship sporting events, lectures and graduations at the state-of-the-art multi-purpose venue.
TIESTO/EDM SHOWS: The Ryan Center held it’s first ever Electronic Dance Music (EDM) concert this past September with over 3,600 fans enjoying the Dutch musician named Tiesto, who was voted the “Greatest DJ of All-Time” earlier in the year. The combo of Tiesto, Girl Talk, Avicii and Dayglow helped entertain over 10,000 students and community members, providing high-energy music, soaring aerial acts, contortion acts, fire shows and PAINT into an experience of lifetime during the first season of Electronic Dance Music at the Ryan Center
DANA CARVEY: Witty impressionist, actor and Emmy award winning comedian, Dana Carvey brought the laughs to the Ryan Center in front of more than 3,800 fans during URI Family Weekend presented by URI SEC and the URI Family Weekend Committee. This was the largest crowd for a comedy show at the Ryan Center since “The Tonight Show” host, Jay Leno entertained the crowds in 2008.
2012 NCAA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL EAST REGIONAL: The Rhode to the 2012 NCAA® Women’s Final Four® traveled through Kingston, Rhode Island and the University of Rhode Island campus in 2012. The Ryan Center and URI Athletics hosted more than 11,000 fans to watch UCONN, Kentucky, Penn State and Gonzaga at the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball East Regional. The Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight games were the first NCAA events held at the Ryan Center and brought in more patrons than all but one other regional sites for the 2012 Tournament.
AN EVENING WITH BOB BALLARD: Famed marine explorer and University of Rhode Island Professor Robert Ballard, who discovered the sunken remains of the Titanic in 1985, provided a free public lecture about his discovery of the Titanic and his thoughts about its preservation. The program which attracted more than 2,200 patrons coincided with events worldwide honoring the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking.

RYAN CENTER TENANTS The University of Rhode Island Men’s Basketball program finished the 2011-2012 season with a 7-24 overall record. An 81-78 home overtime win over rival UMass Minutemen and a win over NCCA tournament participant, St. Louis highlighted the Runnin’ Rams season along with freshman point guard Mike Powell. The true freshman became the first to have over 100 assists since Tyson Wheeler in 1994-95. The Rams also hosted their Sixth Annual Pink Out “Rams for the Cure”, a breast cancer charity event held in conjunction with the February 15th game against St. Joseph’s. URI Athletics along with the Ryan Center have helped generate over $55,000 in proceeds the past 6 seasons to benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation to help find a cure for Breast Cancer. Following the season the Rams let go of long time coach, Jim Baron, and filled the head coaching vacancy with the hiring of former Wagner coach, Dan Hurley, brother of former Duke star and Sacramento Kings guard, Bobby Hurley. Head Coach Cathy Inglese and the URI Women’s Basketball program finished the 2011-2012 season with a record of 1-28. Their lone win of the season came at home November 16th against in-state rival Providence College by a score of 52-42. The
women’s program is looking to the future with the addition of six (6) new incoming freshmen to the already young Lady Rams. URI Football finished their 2011 season with a 3-8 overall record while posting a 3-2 home record at Meade Stadium. Their season was highlighted by defeating nationally-ranked Deleware on Homecoming weekend. The Rams had 12 student-athletes named to the CAA Academic AllConference team, as well as having five players voted to the 2011 All-CAA Teams. Senior All-CAA wide receiver Anthony Baskerville, was also named to the 2011 Division I FCS All-New England Football Team. Baskerville led the Rams in receptions (46), receiving yards (731) and touchdowns (7). He led the CAA in yards per reception (15.9) and was fourth in receiving yards per game (66.5).

BOSS ICE ARENA TENANTS The primary goal at the Bradford R. Boss Arena is to provide our patrons with an all around experience that is superior to that of any other ice rink experience. By fulfilling this goal, it has ensured repeat customers and an expanded use of the facility. The men’s team took home the ESCHL Playoff Championships for the second consecutive season, while the women completed one of their finest seasons in programs history with an end of the year ranking of third in the nation. Additionally, Boss Ice Arena has various loyal customers, of which many utilize the facility on a year round basis. Some of these customers include Exeter/West Greenwich Hockey Club, Men’s Hockey League, and several other pick up hockey groups organized by devoted customers, such as John Matuszek, Ken Cole, and Marty Ludvigsen. During the long hockey season many patrons are proud to call the Boss Arena their home away from home. These customers include Southern Rhode Island Youth Hockey Association, and boys’ high school hockey teams from The Prout School, North Kingstown, South Kingstown and Narragansett, as well as a newly formed girls’ Co-op team from South County. As a result of their dedication, the pride that our employees feel is passed onto our customers. The Boss Ice Arena operates a successful in-house Learn to Skate program, lead by Skating Director, Jewell Augustine, and public programs, such as, public skating, birthday parties and general social gatherings, public hockey, and stick and puck. LEARN TO SKATE The South County Skating School, at the Boss Ice Arena, offers learn-to-skate sessions throughout the year. Each session is eight (8) weeks, and each class hour includes a 25-minute group lesson, and 25 minutes of practice time. Designed by the United States Figure Skating Association, the Basic Skills Program is a beginning ice skating program that is fun, challenging and rewarding. Participation in the program enables beginning skaters of all ages, the abilities to learn the fundamentals of the sport and begin a lifetime commitment to health and wellness. South County Skating School customizes their instruction to every level of skater from beginner to advanced including adults. The Adult curriculum is designed for the beginner adult skater. It promotes physical fitness, as well as improved balance and coordination while learning proper skating techniques. Divided into levels, adult skaters progress at an individual rate while being challenged and motivated. This is an exciting program for people who look to skating as an enjoyable way for a fit and healthy lifestyle. During the 2011-12 season Boss Ice Arena saw a 24% increase in participation in Learn To Skate from the 2010-11 season while performing 16% better than our budget. In 2009, Boston Culinary Group merged with Centerplate to become the official concessionaire at the Ryan Center. Centerplate is one of the largest hospitality companies in the world and is dedicated to delivering Craveable Experiences. Raveable Results. to our many guests and clients. They devote themselves to providing our clients with a total solution platform that does much more than solely serve food.
URI Catering is the exclusive caterer for all functions within the Ryan Center including in the Luxury Suites, Birthday Parties and Pre-Show Events/Dinners. The catering staff at the University of Rhode Island prides itself in the fine service which it provides to guests of the venue. Their services include: served dinners, buffets, receptions, luncheons and full service bakery.
IATSE Local 23 has provided the Ryan Center with skilled labor necessary to undertake those functions associated with the arrival, performance and departure of concerts, speaking engagements and/or theatrical performances since 2004. Such skilled labor includes the movement and set up of lighting and sound equipment, set up of props, sets, wardrobe and rigging of all show-related material/equipment.

GOING GREEN GLOBAL SPECTRUM is committed to reducing the use of natural resources and the amount of waste that results from various events and activities that take place at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena. These efforts are part of a corporate initiative called the Global Spectrum STEP UP Program, which is a program designed to enhance our corporate image and distinguish us as a socially and environmentally responsible organization. The Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena are committed to achieving maximum sustainable operations in our facilities. Working with our vendor partner, LIKARR Maintenance Systems, one of the regions largest and fastest growing companies in the Facility Supply Distribution Industry, the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena utilizes the latest technologies in equipment, chemical management systems and best practices to provide a GREENER, cleaner and healthier environment for our staff, clients and patrons. New equipment and supplies continue to be updated to make the facilities more efficient. A notable product that was updated this past season was BETCO FASTDRAW, an innovative multiproduct dispensing system offering the most compact design in the market. The dispensing unit contains four concentrated products to quickly dispense the appropriate product at the proper dilution, reducing chemical waste and maintaining consistent cleaning results. • Innovative design maximizes otherwise wasted closet space • Safe-spill proof design eliminates the potential for chemical contact with the cleaning staff • Simple twist on bottle connection is easy to install and check valve

In our North and South Lobbies, we converted seven hanging lights from 400- watt metal halide to a 116- watt fixture. The lamps used in the old fixtures are 400-watt metal halide and have been replaced by 26 watt CFL lamp fixtures. Not only is the cost savings per bulb significant, but the energy consumed by the new fixtures has been reduced from 9.9 electrical KW/H to 2,7 KW/H. In addition, the light level (measured in foot candles) in the lobbies has increased by more than 500%

SOCIAL MEDIA The Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena continue to utilize social networks as a tool to interact with our audiences on a daily/weekly basis. Over the past few years we have seen our “Likes”, “Follows” and visits/views increase dramatically. This increase has been a direct result of branding our tags on advertising, utilizing Facebook and Twitter more frequently to promote events, special opportunities for our sponsors and in general interaction with URI students and the community. Boss Ice Arena has seen a 102% increase in “Likes” on Facebook in the past two years, while the Ryan Center has jumped 136% in “Likes” and 193% in Twitter followers since 2010.

HYD Not just a saying or a greeting…How You Doin’? is a philosophy that runs deep through Global Spectrum Facility Management’s facilities and staff. How You Doin’? is more than a way we greet our clients and guests. It’s a way of life at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena. Both venues staffs are trained in the HYD philosophy, including the Top 10 principals that help us maintain a first-rate facility by providing top-notch service to our guests. Our HYD committee was put in place featuring a representative from each department to create a fun and exciting work atmosphere. Some highlights from the HYD committee this past season were a rebranding of HYD inside the Ryan Center, our all staff training, Thanksgiving Food Drive, Wear Red for American Heart Association, Fall Bowling outing, Spring Ropes Course outing and our monthly HYD newsletter.

SURVEYS Customer Satisfaction Surveys Customer satisfaction at the Ryan Center is an extremely important part of Global Spectrum’s operation and in FY 12 the Ryan Center began the use of a client satisfaction survey system through Survey Monkey. Following specific events an email is sent to all ticket purchasers with an explanation of the survey and a link to event specific survey. Our customers are asked to rate their experience at the facility in a variety of areas. These areas include building cleanliness, staff knowledge, concession operations, parking experience, will call experience, and overall impression of the facility. In March of this year, the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball East Regional’s presented the Ryan Center with a unique opportunity to capture the experience of well traveled patrons visiting the venue for the first time. FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS LIGHTING
Our North and South lobbies (main entrance areas) were quite dim and lacked any usable light due to the fixtures that were chosen to be hung above. They were so high up that there was only around 3 foot candles of light reaching the floor in both lobbies. We decided to not only improve the amount of light that was reaching the lobby, but at the same time change the look of the hanging fixtures, and choose fixtures that were going to allow us some energy savings. The result is more that ten times the brightness and an energy savings of around 50% compared to the old fixtures.
BOX OFFICE
At our main Box Office, we wanted to improve the way in which we get important information out to the patrons heading in to an event. First, we installed LED informational signs for each window so guests could easily identify the proper window to approach. These replaced our paper signs allowing for more visibility form a greater distance. Second, we replaced an outdated and limited system to playback audio messages to the area. Not only was the quality improved, but the directionality and control systems were as well. In addition to the Box Office facility improvement, a newly designed ticket was created for men’s and women’s basketball that highlights the university’s traditional Keaney Blue while branding the new Ryan Center and RI logos.
WIRELESS INTERNET A new wireless internet system was installed and is operable in the Ryan Center. This new system allows us to not only have greater coverage here in the building, with no “dark” areas, it has also prevented the need to install any temporary units. There is no longer a need for anyone visiting the building to switch from one network to another while walking through the facility. Additionally, it has given the Ryan Center staff better control over the usage of our network capabilities, making it a significant premium item that is sellable to our shows/clients.
ICE OUT PROJECT

Over the course of several years and all the hours of usage, the wear and tear of the dasher board system has required the removal of some of these sections to be re-welded. In order to correct this problem, we needed to remove some of these sections and have them re-welded. To accomplish this, we had to de-ice the area around them and level the mounting track so that when the dashers were reinstalled, they would be level. In addition, guided supports would be inserted behind the dasher boards for added stability. Due to this project having multiple layers that equated to being shut down for about a week, we found it a natural time to insert our new logos in the ice. Based on the fact that we had to take such a large area of the ice out for all the new logos and also for the dasher board repair, it made sense to do the whole ice sheet and create a uniform presentation.
FUTURE OUTLOOK The Global Spectrum staff at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena are excited to start the 2013 Fiscal Year. Building on the accomplishments from this past season, the staff continues to work diligently in bringing diverse events and programs to both the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena, while emphasizing customer service through the “How You Doin’?” program. As both venues approach their ten (10) Year Anniversaries, initiatives are in the works to celebrate this milestone. Keep your eyes open for our celebrations that will include giveaways, events, facility upgrades and more. This is a considerable milestone for the University of Rhode Island and the community and the entire full-time and part-time staff is energized to share this time with our customers, our partners, and tenants.
The Ryan Center’s main tenants, URI Men’s and Women’s Basketball programs are ready for another exciting ten (10) years. Season ticket holders and URI Men’s Basketball fanatics alike are energized and excited with the hiring of Dan Hurley, noted as the second best college basketball coach hire of 2012 by ESPN. Hurley and his brother and assistant coach, former Duke and NBA star, Bobby Hurley, have already begun building up the Rams’ program with some big-time transfers and new recruits this offseason. The Women’s Program is also looking to the future by adding six (6) new incoming freshman to the already young Lady Rams. We hope to see you during the 2012-13 season which is already off to a strong start that will include, great shows, exciting basketball opponents and an array of community events. We promise to continue to grow our relationships with local and national agents and promoters in order to bring a variety of entertainment/events to our customers and the community.
