Message from URI Athletic Director

THE

UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND Athletics Director of Athletics 3 Keaney Road, Suite 1, Kingston, RI 02881 USA

The 2013-14 University of Rhode Island school year was another great example of collaboration between the University of Rhode Island Athletic Department and the Ryan Center administrative staff. In order to show the University of Rhode Island community a cohesive enterprise, the Ryan Center staff and Athletic Department staff need to work extremely close and seamless. I continue to be so pleased with how the two staff ’s work together, but more importantly the mutual respect and appreciation shown by both groups towards each other should be a model of how an athletic department and a private management company should work together. The summer of 2014 has already been very exciting with new initiatives that will surely enhance the overall fan experience in what I believe to be the greatest basketball facility in the Atlantic 10 Conference. With incredible technology enhancements, the URI fan base is going to be extremely proud of the facility and we know our men’s and women’s basketball players are going to love the impact this new technology has on their overall experience. The Ryan Center management staff has also played an integral role in a men’s and women’s basketball office renovation project this summer. As we continue to invest and support our men’s and women’s basketball programs, it is critical to utilize the expertise with the Ryan Center’s operations staff to ensure projects are not only done in a first class manner, but also within budget and on time. We are excited about the continued partnership between URI Athletics and the Ryan Center staff from Global Spectrum. The future is very bright and we will continue to work together to ensure we provide the best customer service in the best building in our league.

I

n the second season under head coach Dan Hurley, the Rhode Island Rams men’s basketball team rebounded to win 14 games, notching wins over LSU in Baton Rouge and Elite Eight participant and conference rival, Dayton. E.C. Matthews was named Co-Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, becoming one of only three freshman in the country to average at least 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists in a single game. Matthews is only the 5th URI player in history to win the award, joining John Evans, Kenny Green, Antonio Reynolds-Dean and Lamar Odom. Matthews also became one of the only six players in the 37-year history of the Atlantic 10 to ever garner the Rookie of the Week honors at least seven times. Similarly, fellow freshman Hassan Martin was named to the Atlantic 10 Rookie team, leading the league in blocked shots with 75 and setting the URI record for most blocked shots by a freshman. Martin also notched four double-doubles this season, leading all Atlantic 10 freshmen. In addition, junior Gilvydas Biruta also earned several major national academic accolades this year, including the NABC Honors Court, the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team and the Capital One Academic All-District I team. Starting the 2014-15 season with highly ranked recruits Jared Tyrell, Jarvis Garrett and junior transfer, Early Watson, the Ram’s future looks bright. With a very young team, the Rhode Island women’s basketball team finished the season ranked 43rd nationally in team defense, allowing just 60.2 points per game. With 114 blocked shots as a team, Rhody topped 100 blocks for the first time since the 1980-81 season, making this the fourth-highest single-season total in program history. Team captain and

sophomore, Tayra Melendez, led the team and finished second in the Atlantic 10, with an average of 1.5 blocks per game. This off season the Ram’s made a coaching change and Daynia La-Force was named as the team’s new head coach in May. This makes La-Force the first minority woman head coach in any sport in URI’s history. During the 2013 season, Rhode Island’s football team played its 1,000th game on Oct. 5 at Brown University. To celebrate the milestone, the team honored the top 50 players in program history, most of whom were on hand for a special pregame ceremony during Homecoming against Delaware. Here, Senior kick returner, Mackenzie Elliott, and five other Rams - Andrew Belizaire, Robbie Jackson, Andrew Bose, Josh Moody and James Timmins - were named to the CAA Football All-Conference Team. Elliott was a first-team selection after leading the league and ranking third among all FCS players with 878 kick return yards, the second-highest single-season total in Rhode Island history. On Oct. 19, kicker Dylan Smith went on to tie a school record with four field goals, which also accounted for all of Rhody’s points in a 12-10 win over Richmond. The performance earned Smith a CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week honors, as well as the national kicker/special team’s player of the week honors from four national publications. Wide receiver Robbie Jackson went on to catch 61 passes, making him the first Ram in 28 seasons (Cy Butler, 1995) to make at least 60 receptions. In December, the Rams also made a coaching change, hiring Jim Fleming, the previous defensive coordinator from nationally ranked Central Florida, as the 20th head coach in the program’s long history.

he primary goal at the Bradford R. Boss Arena is to provide our patrons with an all around experience that is superior to that of any other ice rink. By fulfilling this goal, it has ensured repeat customers and an expanded use of the facility. As this responsibility falls on each and every employee as a whole, all of our employees are motivated to consistently provide our patrons with the highest quality of service, along with a clean and comfortable environment in which to enjoy themselves. As a result of their dedication, the pride that our employees feel is passed onto our customers. The Boss Ice Arena operates a successful in-house Learn to Skate program, led by Skating Director, Jewell Augustine, and public programs such as, figure skating, public skating, birthday parties and general social gatherings, rock and skate, public hockey, and stick and puck. Boss is also home to the nationally ranked URI Men’s and Women’s Club Hockey teams. The men’s team finished the 2013-14 season with a record of 22-12-3 and an overall ranking of #15 in the country. The team lost in the second round of the ACHA National Tournament, while finishing 3rd during the regular season of the ESCHL and losing in the semifinals of the ESCHL League Tournament. Coach Augustine extended his streak of winning seasons to 25. The URI women’s team continued off of their momentum from the previous season of ending the year ranked at 6th and finished another strong season ranked 3rd in the country with an overall record of 23-8-4. In addition, they also captured the teams 10th ECWHL Championship this year and will be host to the 2015 ECWHL Championship next season. Boss Ice Arena also has various loyal customers, of which many utilize the facility on a year round basis. Some of these customers include Exeter/West Greenwich Hockey Club, Men’s Hockey Leagues, and several other pick up hockey groups organized by devoted customers, such as John Gaffney, Toby Gibbons, John Matuszek, Ken Cole, and Marty Ludvigsen. During the long hockey season many patrons are proud to call the Boss Arena their home away from home. These customers include Southern Rhode Island Youth Hockey Association, and boys’ high school hockey teams from The Prout School, North Kingstown, South Kingstown and Narragansett, as well as the girls’ Co-op team from South County. As the Bradford R. Boss Arena celebrates another year in operation, we are not only commemorating the successful years that have passed; we are enjoying the present and looking forward to the future, with the continued friendships and the new ones yet to be made.

As a special opportunity, members of the leadership forum were also able to act as students and attend classes taught by current University Professors in their major of choice.

URI Volunteer Leadership Forum:

The URI Student Entertainment Committee (SEC) has partnered with Global Spectrum since the venues’ inception to bring numerous artists, comedians and personalities to the Ryan Center to entertain the students and URI community; with many of those shows selling out. This past season, the URI SEC brought comedian Jim Gaffigan for URI Family Weekend and multi-platinum recording artist Ke$ha in the fall. Over the winter, SEC brought Academy of Country Music Awards’ Top Vocal Group nominee Eli Young Band. This year the Ryan Center also helped in cross promotional efforts with SEC for their shows at URI’s Edwards Auditorium, including Amy Schumer, Bo Burnham, Evan Peters, Mathew Perry, Patton Oswalt and, from the Saturday Night Live cast, Jay Pharoah and Nasim Pedrad.

How You Doin’?

Not just a saying or a greeting…How You Doin’? is a philosophy that runs deep through Global Spectrum Facility Management’s facilities and staff. How You Doin’? is more than a way we greet our clients and guests. It’s a way of life at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena. Whenever customers encounter a Ryan Center or Boss Ice Arena employee, they are greeted with a “How You Doin’?” and a big smile. HYD encourages all employees to engage in conversation with customers, not only to assist them and make their experience more enjoyable, but also for us to gauge our performance as a company. Employees report back to management any significant comments so they can be acted upon. Besides this universal greeting, the HYD program also includes employee incentives, training for full and part-time staff members, tools to measure company performance and more. Both venues staffs are trained in the HYD philosophy, including the upgraded Top 5 principals that help us maintain a first-rate facility by providing top-notch service to our guests. A HYD committee is in place at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena featuring a representative from each department to create a fun and exciting work atmosphere. Manager of the Global Spectrum managed Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena, “The university understands that it is our job as the facility management company at the Ryan Center, to book events that our campus and community want to attend. Currently EDM is a genre of music that are in high demand from the student audience, and so it was important for us to take the necessary steps with the university that allows us to continue to book these types of events.” The safety campaign, which was rolled out in October, features the theme, “Make it a night to remember...not a night to forget!” utilizing hashtags #BESAFE, #STICKTOGETHER and #HAVEFUNRESPONSIBLY in all messaging including; TV slides at the Ryan Center/dorms/dining halls/Student Union, Retractable Banners, Social Media, Email Blasts, show collateral material and informational tables at events.

Going

Green

G

lobal Spectrum recognizes the increasing importance of managing venues that are “green”, or environmentally friendly, and is committed to reducing the use of natural resources and the amount of waste that results from various events and activities that take place at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena. These efforts are part of a corporate initiative called the Global Spectrum “STEP UP” program, which is a program designed to enhance our corporate image and distinguish us as a socially and environmentally responsible organization.

At the Ryan Center and Boss Ice arena we are committed to achieving maximum sustainable operations in our facilities and reducing the use of natural resources and the amount of waste that results from various events and activities that take place throughout the year. Working with our vendor partner, LIKARR Maintenance Systems, one of the regions largest and fastest growing companies in the Facility Supply Distribution Industry, the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena utilizes the latest technologies in equipment, chemical management systems and best practices to provide a GREENER, cleaner and healthier environment for our staff, clients and patrons including replacing cleaning supplies with more environmentally friendly products. We also utilize environmentally safe chemicals for our water treatment through Rhode Island’s Bardon’s Water Services and Technologies.

Cost Containment

Global Spectrum has a proven track record of aggressively controlling energy costs. Through LIKARR we have installed the FastDraw system at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena, which cuts costs by using exact dilution control levels and reduces excessive use of water when compared to manually diluting products. This system also reduces the venues’ carbon footprint by decreasing chemical and plastic in the waste stream. Through Gexpro Lighting we have installed new energy efficient concourse lighting in the Ryan Center, reducing power usage from 400 watts (16,000 hours burn) to 116 watts (40,000 hours burn). This increases the life span of the lamps by 50%, while decreasing the energy output by 40%. Global Spectrum is also in the process of upgrading the lights inside the arena by providing new state-of-the-art LED lighting fixtures. The project will decrease the watts from 1100 watts to 635 watts, saving the University approximately three million dollars ($3,000,000) in acquisition and total costs over a fifteen year span.

30 4 30

Recycling Efforts

We have placed recycling bins for glass, plastic and aluminum cans in front of all concession stands, around the concourse and in the office areas of the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena. Where appropriate, through our partnership with Waste Management, Global Spectrum uses a single-stream recycling program in which paper, glass, plastic and aluminum cans are placed in one bin instead of being separated by material. These bins are placed throughout the building, including offices, kitchens and concessions. Through Global Spectrum’s relationship with Waste Management, the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena environmental efforts have produced the following annual savings: • 141,912 kW-hrs of electricity (enough to power 12 homes for a full year) • 3,120 gallons of oil (enough energy to heat and cool 12 homes for a full year) • 744 gallons of gasoline (enough gasoline to drive 20,736 miles) • 420 mature trees (enough to produce 5,167,980 sheets of newspaper) • 215,976 gallons of water (enough to meet the fresh water needs of 960 people for a year) • 132 cubic yards of landfill airspace (enough airspace to meet the disposal needs of a community of 1,968 people)

Future Outlook

T

he Global Spectrum staff at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena are excited as we enter the 2015 fiscal year as partners of The University of Rhode Island for our thirteenth season. Building on the accomplishments from this past season, the staff continues to work diligently in bringing diverse events for all audiences to both the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena; while emphasizing customer service through the “How You Doin’?” program. To foster our goal of continuing to look for new opportunities to enhance our fan experience at the Ryan Center for not only basketball games, but all concerts, shows and community events we host; we are excited as this fall, student-athletes, fans and opponents will experience a new game day atmosphere with brand new integrated display systems. The new technology, which was just recently installed; includes new main and auxillary LED video boards, as well as an LED ribbon wrap throughout the arena bowl, designed and manufactured by Daktronics, the world’s leading provider of full-color LED video displays. The new LED video boards and ribbon board are another significant step forward on the heels of the new LED lights that were installed prior to last season and a new sound barrier to cover the concrete wall under the main video board. These upgrades will provide the very best experience for each patron that attends events at the Ryan Center. It also creates opportunities for our multimedia rights holder, Rhody Sports Properties of Learfield Sports to generate additional sponsorship revenue. In addition, we are excited to offer our patrons new concession options including Dunkin’ Donuts, Pizza

Gourmet and themed concession stands; while outfitting each concession stand with a new look and feel including new digital menu boards. With all the recent fan experience upgrades, next year promises to be an exciting one on the Alex and Ani Court at the Ryan Center. The men’s basketball team is poised for a breakout season under Coach Dan Hurley and his staff, with the Rams selected as high as 4th in preseason A10 polls. The women’s basketball team welcomes Head Coach Daynia La-Force, and an exciting group of new recruits for the 2014-15 season. Our show season is already off to a fantastic start with five (5) shows on the books for the Fall already including: an EDM/Hip Hop festival featuring Dada Life and 2Chainz, Superstar Iggy Azalea, Country phenom Hunter Hayes, Chance the Rapper and Family Weekend Comedian, Seth Meyers. In addition, the Ryan Center in collaboration with URI Athletics will be rolling out a new ticketing initiative called “Ticket Angel” for men’s and women’s basketball, football and select Ryan Center events. This program allows donors, area businesses and the community to purchase ticket packages that in some cases include a food voucher to the event and donate them to local non-profit organizations. With the continued support of the University of Rhode Island we look forward to seeing you at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena this upcoming season. Don’t miss out on an exciting 2014-15 season full of entertaining shows, exciting basketball and new fan experiences.
