Rust College Earns Place on National Honor Roll for Community Service One of 690 institutions of higher education to receive this honor
Rust College was named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This designation is the highest honor a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. “Rust College has a long history of service-learning and believes strongly in preparing our graduates to be active leaders and participants in an ever changing world,” said Dr. David L. Beckley, President. “We’re honored to receive this prestigious award – and owe much of it to the students themselves. They’re the energy driving our commitment and they’re the ones who make it all happen.” Rust College is a service-learning institution in which students not only focus on academia, but community service as well. In addition, the Rust College Community Development Corporation is helping to improve and revitalize areas in the Holly Springs community. “Congratulations to Rust College, its faculty and students for its commitment to service, both in and out of the classroom,” said Wendy Spencer, CEO of CNCS. “Through its work, institutions of higher education are helping improve their local communities and create a new generation of leaders by challenging students to go beyond the traditional college experience and solve local challenges.” Inspired by the thousands of college students who traveled across the country to support relief efforts along the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, CNCS has administered the award since 2006 and manages the program in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education and Campus Compact.

Alpha Kappa Mu Induction Ceremony Held; Who’s Who Recognized Rust College inducted twenty new members into the Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society on Tuesday, April 9th during its annual Honors Assembly. Current AKM president Cleotha Taylor presided over the event; greetings were given by AKM member Shakaree Hale and the invocation by AKM member Telicia Gayden. You have laid a strong foundation, and one has been laid for you.” An undergraduate student shall be eligible to be elected as a collegiate member of Alpha Kappa Mu if the individual is registered as a full-time student, and is in good standing with the institution at which the chapter is located. Candidates must be at least a junior in a degree-seeking program, and have completed 50 percent of the requirement for graduation. Candidates must have a minimum grade point average of 3.3 and ranked in the upper 10% of the class. Candidates must exemplify good character and exhibits the potential for leadership and service. Action News 5 Weather Road Show Comes to Rust College By: Nicole LaRue
Rust College faculty, staff, and students, as well as residents of the Holly Springs/Marshall County community, were blessed to be visited by WMC-TV Action News 5 meteorologist Ron Childers, during their Weather Road Show Tour. As a sophomore Mass Communications major, I had the grand opportunity to interview Mr. Childers after his presentation. Mr. Childers is a native of Memphis, Tennessee. He obtained his Certificate of Broadcast Meteorology in the 1990s. He began his broadcast career within the Memphis radio district, starting at WRVR during the early 1980s, then moving on to WMC FM 100. He moved into television broadcasting in 1989 as a Marketing and Promotions Producer and parttime meteorologist for WMC-TV. He has spent more than 20 years in the forecasting field, which have included some of the MidSouth’s most memorable storms, and has been awarded an Emmy for his talent. The biggest part of his presentation was a video that was shown with the assistance of Mass Communications professor Dr. Debayo Moyo. The video showed a day in the life of a meteorologist at work, how they track storms, the equipment they use and storm safety tips for families. Mr. Childers also signed autographs, gave away t-shirts and helped program weather radios for guests. He was presented a proclamation by City of Holly Springs Mayor Andre’ DeBerry and was visited by Rep. Kelvin Buck (D-MS). At the end of his presentation, Mr. Childers and WMC-TV Marketing Director Chris Conroy drew tickets to win an Action News 5 jacket, in which a student from Holly Springs High School was the lucky winner.
