UNLOCKING FUTURES 2015 Annual Impact Report

Dear Friends of St. Joseph’s Villa

With nearly two centuries of serving the Greater Richmond community at our back, we look excitedly to unlocking our future–not only the future of the Villa itself, but also the futures of our children and families. Thanks to our expanding community partnerships and the leadership of our Boards and staff, we continue to evolve as an organization to build the brightest possible futures for those who are the most vulnerable, underserved, and confronted with the greatest adversities. This year we will impact the lives of nearly 3,000 children and families–a four-fold increase from just five years ago. There is no denying that the needs of society are growing. For many facing homelessness, autism, mental illness and other life-altering challenges, the Villa may be their last hope. Our wraparound approach to education, therapy, and community integration leads those we serve to recognize the inherent good within themselves when others have failed to see it. Through pioneering programs we reinforce their individual strengths and empower them to apply their full potential in all aspects of their lives. A single key was used to open the door to St. Joseph’s Villa on November 25, 1834. Our doors have remained open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for 181 years, inspired by the successes of our children and families. They are the heart of everything we do. It is our privilege to share with you a handful of the year’s amazing outcomes and highlights in this report. Thank you for your support and for sharing our belief in our children and families. With friends like you in their corner, we can keep unlocking brighter futures at St. Joseph’s Villa. Sincerely,

Chair, Board of Trustees

Chief Executive Officer

Archways are emblematic of the historic Villa campus. The structures they support have stood the test of time, as has our commitment to helping children and families in the greatest need. The Archway Society is a distinctive recognition of friends whose estate plans provide strong and durable support for children, so that they may pass safely from lives shaped by homelessness, physical and developmental disabilities, autism, mental illness and behavioral disorders to futures of greater stability, independence, self-confidence, and hopefulness. We thank the following active and legacy members of the Archway Society who are known to us, listed right. If you have included St. Joseph’s Villa in your estate plans, we invite you to notify us so that we can count you among the members of the Archway Society. Please contact David Huffine, VP for Advancement, at 804-5533220 or dhuffine@sjvmail.net. Those considering such provisions are encouraged to contact us for conversation to ensure their gift will have the greatest impact on our children and families in generations to come. Unlocking Isaac’s Future Isaac had a hard time controlling his anger since kindergarten. When classroom outbursts, school suspensions and hospital visits became routine, his mother Lachelle had no choice but to stop working and care for him full time. Isaac’s aggression came from a diagnosed mental illness. Lachelle had worked for years in the medical field as a triage nurse, but had no idea of where to turn to get her son the treatment he needed. Henrico County Mental Health and Developmental Services then referred Isaac to the Therapeutic Day Treatment program at St. Joseph’s Villa. After about a year in the program, Lachelle saw a huge turnaround in Isaac’s behavior. “There’s no comparing the past to the present,” she said. “The program taught him con¬structive ways to deal with frustration and keep from lashing out–things I never would’ve thought to do.” Therapeutic Day Treatment is based on a positive behavioral management system. Every child has his or her own goals tailored to individual needs. Program staff involved Lachelle in developing Isaac’s learning plan and provided guidelines for working with him at home. Isaac attended Day Treatment after school and every summer through sixth grade. Today Isaac is doing well academically and can participate in class without any outbursts. Lachelle is back to working full time. Isaac occasionally returns to the Villa to visit his coun¬selors and friends. “The Villa helped me a lot,” said Isaac. “They took the anger out of me.”

Unlocking Reneé’s Future Reneé was diagnosed with autism when she was four years old. Not long after she began kindergarten at public school, her mother, Kimberly, recognized that Reneé’s behaviors were interfering with her ability to learn. Reneé had no means of communicating, and would often lash out and hit her teachers and classmates when her wants or needs were not met. Kimberly’s search for a school that would provide her daughter a more individualized education led her to the Sarah Dooley Center for Autism at St. Joseph’s Villa. “The school felt like it was just right. I couldn’t see her going anywhere else,” she said. At Sarah Dooley, Reneé’s teacher helped her communicate by labeling items in the classroom, from toys to food to technology. Reneé learned to use new words, and how to ask for things she wanted without getting frustrated. After gaining the basic ability to say “yes” or “no,” she continued to develop new communication skills that unlocked her future. Learning to communicate enabled Reneé to read, solve math problems, and engage her community on field trips to places like restaurants and movie theaters. Reneé returned to public school this year and is doing exceptionally well in fourth grade. Kimberly says that Reneé is talking more than ever, hardly has behavioral issues, and is much more willing to be flexible and try new things. “I absolutely loved her teachers and the staff,” said Kimberly. “They are the best. They helped Reneé come as far as she has.”
