2017 Annual REport

From the President & CEO and Trustees

We were honored to host Glenn Harris, President of Center for Social Inclusion, for a gathering of more than 200 people in March of this year. During a meeting with Richmond Memorial Health Foundation Trustees before the event, Glenn told us, “Your greatest power is not money. Philanthropy is the entity that connects the dots.” His words of encouragement and advice were exactly what we needed to hear, coming at a pivotal moment in the history of RMHF. Over the past year, we completed our Strategic Framework and began putting that plan for an equitable and healthy Richmond Region into action through our work in access to health care, equity and health, Invest Health RVA and impact investing. We cannot achieve the goals laid out in this framework alone. We must build relationships across the Richmond Region, our Commonwealth and our nation, then create the space for those relationships to grow over the long term. We are moved when we consider the many new partners we are discovering along the way – individuals who share our vision for a community in which everyone has access to opportunities and everyone has co-ownership in our common destiny. Those partners include the 18 women and men in our Equity + Health Fellowships program, as well as the artists helping us communicate the importance of equity to the neighborhoods where health disparities take their most searing toll. Our work on equity has also created important partnerships with community leaders through Invest Health RVA and the Market Value Analysis Advisory Committee. And we continue to develop closer ties with other foundations in our region. As our network of partners grows, our relationship deepens with the organizations on the front lines of our uncertain health care landscape that are providing essential services to uninsured and underinsured individuals and families. We continue to support these safety-net providers while strengthening our commitment to mental health, oral health and services for new populations, including immigrants and refugees. We are excited to share this annual report summarizing the past year at RMHF. The common thread you will find here is our passion for achieving a more equitable and healthy Richmond Region. We look forward to continuing our progress and developing new friendships over the coming year.
