2014 Annual Impact Report

180 Years of 180º Turns

Pivotal moments happen every day at St. Joseph’s Villa. A child with autism speaks for the first time. A student who once struggled with school is accepted into college. A homeless family realizes the dream of having a safe place to call their own. For 180 years St. Joseph’s Villa has created 180-degree turns for children and families with the support of our community. Today we serve those faced with developmental disabilities, mental illness, homelessness and other challenges. Your belief in them is the spark that helps turn lives around.

From Jill M. Kennedy and Kathleen Burke Barrett When three Daughters of Charity found the courage to embark on a steamboat for Richmond in 1834, countless lives would be changed forever. This religious group of women was called upon to care for the city’s orphaned and impoverished children, and true to their mission they established St. Joseph’s Villa to give these children hope for a brighter future. One hundred and eighty years later, the Villa continues to transform the lives of those in the greatest need. In honor of the turnarounds we see in our children and families each day–turnarounds that you help make possible–this year we are excited to celebrate with you 180 Years of 180-Degree Turns. Jill M. Kennedy (left) Chair, Board of Trustees Kathleen Burke Barrett Chief Executive Officer

St. Joseph’s Villa was built on the fundamental belief in the value of every child, and we never give up on their ability to accomplish great things in the face of adversity. This year we impacted 2,800 children and families through nineteen programs designed to meet their individual needs. While nature has proven to be a powerful healing tool across campus–our students have taken proud ownership of the Learning & Therapy Garden–many of our programs are becoming increasingly community-based to provide more efficient and effective service. You’ll see some of the amazing outcomes of these programs throughout this report. As the world continues to change, so will St. Joseph’s Villa. We constantly adapt our programs to incorporate the latest best practices and meet the prevalent needs of our community. One thing that will never change, however, is our dedication to helping children and families reach their potential and live more fulfilling lives. Thank you for your support of St. Joseph’s Villa. We look forward to our next 180 years of creating brighter futures in our community. Sincerely,

Brook Road Academy students helped make this year’s Sarah Dooley Center for Autism Field Day one to remember. 1

Flagler: AN AWARD-WINNING YEAR

• F lagler was one of the first three rapid re-housing providers in the nation to be certified by the National Alliance to End Homelessness. • T he National Council on Accreditation honored Flagler with the 2013 Innovative Practices Award. • D irector of Housing & Homeless Services Kimberly Tucker received the Innovators of Change Award from the Virginia Housing Coalition. • F lagler found permanent housing for 465 children and 327 adults.

Flagler exceeds Virginia Rapid Re-Housing Challenge goal: 52 families housed in 100 days

“ I don’t know how I could’ve made it without Flagler,” said LaToya. When LaToya ran out of time at a local shelter, she returned to the condemned home with no other resources. “I was just trying to buy time,” she said. LaToya’s life took a 180-degree turn when she found Flagler’s Housing Resource Center. Within a few weeks she was rapidly rehoused into a safe apartment of her own.

LaToya and Justus were one of the 52 families housed by Flagler Housing & Homeless Services during Virginia’s firstever Rapid Re-Housing Challenge. From October 17, 2013 to January 24, 2014, thirty-one organizations across the state set a collaborative goal to place 500 homeless families in permanent housing in 100 days. In partnership with the National Alliance to End Homelessness, 545 families now have a home as a result of the challenge. Flagler exceeded its goal of housing 50 families in the Richmond and Petersburg areas. LaToya’s new home is on the bus line and allows her easy access to her job and city amenities. She is currently seeking to teach full-time.

Flagler found LaToya Currie and her 18-year-old son Justus a place to call home during the Virginia Rapid-ReHousing Challenge.

LaToya Currie, an elementary school substitute teacher, rented her Petersburg home for four years with her 18-year-old son Justus until it was abandoned by the landlord and condemned by the City.

Governor McAuliffe signs mental health reform bills at the Villa One of the fastest growing areas at St. Joseph’s Villa is children’s mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Health reports that 82,000 children in Virginia live with serious mental health conditions. In recognition of the advancements St. Joseph’s Villa has made in serving these children, Governor Terry McAuliffe selected our campus as the site to sign into law eight new bills in mental health reform. The bills were signed on May 8, 2014–Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. Among the Villa’s mental health programs is the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU), serving children ages 5 to 17 in mental health crisis. The six-bed CSU opened on the Villa campus in May 2012 in partnership with Richmond Behavioral Health Authority (RBHA) and is the first facility of its kind in Central Virginia. The CSU enables families to keep their children in their communities during a crisis and avoid the much higher costs of unnecessary hospitalization.

Our Crisis Stabilization Unit served 155 children in mental health crisis this year.

of these children were diverted from hospitalization.

St. Joseph’s Villa is the longest continuously operating nonprofit for children in the country.

In its 20th year, our hoedown to stomp homelessness, the Bluegrass Ball, raised $67,000 for Flagler Housing & Homeless Services.

The Villa’s 30th annual golf tournament raised $58,000 to benefit our Developmental Disabilities Services.

Brook Road Academy parents hosted the first-ever Trick or Trot 5K and Derby Day in RVA fundraisers on the Villa Campus! The events raised $24,000 for the school.

VCU students provide group and individual academic support to Dooley School students through the Villa Pros program.

Since 2012, Villa Pals mentors have offered oneon-one guidance to our Dooley School and Day Treatment students for improving behavior and academic achievement. This year we built on the success of Villa Pals by launching the Villa Pros career mentoring program. Through individual and group mentoring by professional role models, Dooley School students are learning about various career fields and participating in networking opportunities to help them reach their goals. Volunteering just one hour a week can give a student the encouragement and skill set he or she needs to build a brighter future. To learn how you can get involved as a mentor at St. Joseph’s Villa, please contact our Mentor Program Coordinator at 804-200-1601.

Archways are emblematic of the historic Villa campus. The structures they support have stood the test of time, as has our commitment to helping children and families in the greatest need. The Archway Society is a distinctive recognition of friends whose estate plans provide strong and durable support for children, so that they may pass safely from lives shaped by homelessness, physical and developmental disabilities, autism, mental illness and behavioral disorders to futures of greater stability, independence, self-confidence, and hopefulness. We thank the following active and legacy members of the Archway Society who are known to us, listed left. If you have included St. Joseph’s Villa in your estate plans, we invite you to notify us so that we can count you among the members of the Archway Society. Please contact David Huffine, VP for Advancement, at 804-553-3220 or dhuffine@sjvmail.net. Those considering such provisions are encouraged to contact us for conversation to ensure their gift will have the greatest impact on our children and families in generations to come. Create a 180 with a gift to St. Joseph’s Villa St. Joseph’s Villa will serve more than 2,800 children and families this year facing autism, mental illness, homelessness and other challenges. They count on your support for a chance at turning their lives around

Donate to the New Day Fund, the Annual Fund of St. Joseph’s Villa The New Day Fund enables each child and family we serve to experience a new beginning. After facing academic barriers in public school, Kiera’s new day started when she enrolled in our Dooley School serving students with emotional and learning disabilities. With encouragement and individual attention from her teachers, Kiera began thriving in the classroom. A boost of self-confidence inspired her to participate in our Career and Transition Services, where she developed professional and social skills through hands-on job training. Kiera grew into a leader during her eight years at St. Joseph’s Villa, respected by her classmates and treasured by her teachers. Now a graduate of Dooley School’s Class of 2014, Kiera is prepared for higher education and hopeful for a successful career. Kiera experienced a new day in her life because of supporters like you. Your gift to the New Day Fund will help many others like Kiera reach their potential. Please use the attached envelope or visit our website at www.NeverStopBelieving.org/NewDayFund to make a tax-deductible donation. To learn more about how you can help, please call 804-200-1617.

How to Give Donate Goods

Our Donation Center welcomes clothing, housewares, toiletries, school supplies and furniture for families in need. The Center operates 11 a.m.- 4 p.m., Monday through Wednesday. We also hold several donation drives throughout the year for holiday gifts and more. Please contact our Director of Community Engagement at 804-521-5577 to learn how you or your organization can participate.

Individualized education and job training helped Kiera, Dooley School Class of 2014, prepare for a bright future beyond high school.
