Mission of shrine mont camps

The Diocese of Virginia’s summer camp program at Shrine Mont promotes the emotional and spiritual development of children, youth, and young adults through the fostering of a safe and positive environment for all. It is the goal of this program to encourage the growth of relationships with God, others, and self.

Safe-Camp Commitment

At Shrine Mont Camps, we strive to create a diverse and safe community that welcomes campers and staff from all backgrounds. We do not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, religion, creed, color, national or ethnic origin, physical or mental ability, or sexual orientation in the administration of any of our programs. All camp activities will promote and maintain the personal and emotional safety of all campers and staff.

About Shrine Mont camps Shrine

The Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration and Mont is a Retreat Center located of the Diocese of in Orkney Virginia

Springs, Virginia in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley

The summer program at Shrine Mont is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, which offers nine amazing camps each summer, including one for families to attend together! From hiking to singing, arts and crafts to an evening spent playing Capture the Flag, all of our camps offer a mixture of recreation, group building, spiritual development, and just plain old fun. No matter how old or young you are – whether you have been an Episcopalian your whole life or are just checking out the Church – if you are interested in spending some time in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley with others in a warm, safe, and welcoming environment, we’ve got a spot for you! Shrine Mont is located on 1,000 acres of forest – which means there is plenty of space for hiking, camping, and enjoying God’s created world. In addition to retreat houses, there are three camp sites, complete with cabins, modern bath facilities, camp fire rings, and art studios. Campers eat well balanced and plentiful meals in one of the two dining halls, and they find themselves playing games on one of the fields (including a soccer field and basketball court), swimming in the pool, exploring or canoeing on one of the ponds in the area. Our staff is chosen for their maturity, dedication, and ability to serve as appropriate role models for their campers. Each counselor is interviewed and screened, and we have an extensive training program for all staff before the first camper sets foot onto the mountain. There are always one or two registered nurses onsite to care for the medical needs of the camp community, and chaplains work with each camp to help address the spiritual needs of the campers.

Won der Each camp has a staff that is fun,

friendly, and loving. Nurses, chaplains, and other support staff are onsite throughout the season, and all employees go through an extensive application process that includes a reference and background check. We train staff members in how to address common camper issues (from homesickness to behavior management), emergency situations, and what to expect from campers of different ages. All C mm must attend sexual misconduct prevention training and te staff receive CPR and First Aid certifications. At each camp, you At Shrine Mont Camps, safety will find staff members who are kind, loving, and means more than simply providwell prepared for the realities of an overnight ing a physically safe environment. Dear Parents, In these pages, you’ll discover how there is a place for every child at the diocesan camps at Shrine Mont. We’re here to help you and your family find your place at Shrine Mont, and here are just a few reasons why: Our wonderful staff; our commitment to safety; our practice of living in the now; our focus on nurturing faith; and our support of self-discovery.

We understand that the decision to send your child to camp involves trust and confidence in the program and staff. We do not take that lightly, and we work year-round to ensure that we have the best staff, the strongest training, and the most welcoming environment possible for all. This is only a short list of why you should include Shrine Mont Camps in your summer plans, so please know that should you have any questions or concerns I’m always available to speak with you. We would also welcome you at one of our Open House events in the spring, and more information about our programs (including online registration and all camper forms) can be found online at www.shrinemontcamps.net.

Now the

ry ove

It’s a chance for campers to discover themselves: Campers at Shrine Mont are openly encouraged to explore their passions and dreams. Away from the pressures and expectations of their school/ family/neighbors, campers are able to make new friendships, experience unstructured (as well as structured) social time, and try out different activities on their own.

2

Nurt uri Camp is also a place

We hope to see you this summer!

for youth to explore their own faith. Shrine Mont is a safe place for campers to ask questions, share their doubts and fears, and listen for God’s call in their lives. Every camp has a chaplain on staff who gets to know the campers, helps them plan and lead worship, and leads daily “chaplain’s time.” At our camps, faith is not pushed or forced; rather, opportunities for faith formation are invited.
