Bluefield enters the game 11th in the Mid-South at 16.8 points per game while UVa-Wise ranks last in the league at 14.2 points per game. On defense, the Rams are last in the league giving up 49.5 points per game while the Cavs rank ninth at 31.3 points per game.

IN NEED OF WINS

Each club enters the game desperately in need of a win. The Rams are 0-6 while the Cavs have dropped five straight games to fall to 1-5. Mike Gravier’s Bluefield team may see Saturday’s contest as the season’s best opportunity to secure the frist win for the program since its rebirth. The five straight defeats for UVa-Wise are the most for the program since 2004; the Cavaliers have never lost six straight contests.

Visiting Belhaven University totaled 526 yards, 282 of which came on the ground, en route to a 52-14 victory over UVa-Wise at Carl Smith Stadium. Kadero Edley led the rushing attack by gaining 169 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown for Belhaven. In the loss, freshman Connery Swift gained 126 yards on 17 carries. The former Wilson Memorial star produced the longest rush of his career with an 84 yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Through the air, Culen LaVoi completed 8-of-19 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown while Julian Stewart had the first 100 reception yard game of his career. Stewart caught two passes for 103 yards and a touchdown for Wise.

SERIES HISTORY

Despite being seperated by less than 100 miles the Rams and Highland Cavaliers are meeting for the first time in program history. UVA-Wise is in the midst of its 22nd season while Bluefield College is in its 21st, however UVA-Wise didn’t start football till 1991 while the Rams played 20 seasons between 1922 and 1941 before restarting the once proud program this season after 71 years.

UVA-WISE A YEAR AGO

UVA-Wise won its first game of the season against Webber International (Fla.) and won four of its first five as they went 5-6 on the year. The Highland Cavaliers lost its last three games of 2011 140-28 including a 50-7 drubbing by Georgetown (Ky.) and a 42-6 loss to Campbellsville (Ky.).

NO RAMBLIN RAM

After opening the season with 141 yards on the ground the Rams have struggled with their ground attack. Redshirt Freshman Josh Wells leads the Rams with 289 yards rushing while averaging just 48.2 yards per game on 2.9 yards per carry.

NEXT GAME AT MITCHELL STADIUM

The Rams will head on the road next week when they travel nearly 800 miles to Jackson, Miss., to face Belhaven University with a 2:30 p.m. EST kickoff. After an off week the Rams return to Mitchell Stadium for homecoming on Oct. 27 when they host Lindsey Wilson at 1 p.m.
