Bluefield enters the game 11th in the Mid-South at 16.8 points per game while UVa-Wise ranks last in the league at 14.2 points per game.

On defense, the Rams are last in the league giving up 49.5 points per game while the Cavs rank ninth at 31.3 points per game.

IN NEED OF WINS

Each club enters the game desperately in need of a win. The Rams are 0-6 while the Cavs have dropped five straight games to fall to 1-5. Mike Gravier’s Bluefield team may see Saturday’s contest as the season’s best opportunity to secure the frist win for the program since its rebirth. The five straight defeats for UVa-Wise are the most for the program since 2004; the Cavaliers have never lost six straight contests.

Visiting Belhaven University totaled 526 yards, 282 of which came on the ground, en route to a 52-14 victory over UVa-Wise at Carl Smith Stadium.

Kadero Edley led the rushing attack by gaining 169 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown for Belhaven.

In the loss, freshman Connery Swift gained 126 yards on 17 carries. The former Wilson Memorial star produced the longest rush of his career with an 84 yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Through the air, Culen LaVoi completed 8-of-19 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown while Julian Stewart had the first 100 reception yard game of his career. Stewart caught two passes for 103 yards and a touchdown for Wise.

SERIES HISTORY

Despite being seperated by less than 100 miles the Rams and Highland Cavaliers are meeting for the first time in program history. UVA-Wise is in the midst of its 22nd season while Bluefield College is in its 21st, however UVA-Wise didn’t start football till 1991 while the Rams played 20 seasons between 1922 and 1941 before restarting the once proud program this season after 71 years.

UVA-WISE A YEAR AGO

UVA-Wise won its first game of the season against Webber International (Fla.) and won four of its first five as they went 5-6 on the year. The Highland Cavaliers lost its last three games of 2011 140-28 including a 50-7 drubbing by Georgetown (Ky.) and a 42-6 loss to Campbellsville (Ky.).

After opening the season with 141 yards on the ground the Rams have struggled with their ground attack.

Redshirt Freshman Josh Wells leads the Rams with 289 yards rushing while averaging just 48.2 yards per game on 2.9 yards per carry.

NEXT GAME AT MITCHELL STADIUM

The Rams will head on the road next week when they travel nearly 800 miles to Jackson, Miss., to face Belhaven University with a 2:30 p.m. EST kickoff. After an off week the Rams return to Mitchell Stadium for homecoming on Oct. 27 when they host Lindsey Wilson at 1 p.m.

RAMS JOIN FOOD CITY TO BATTLE HUNGER The “Sack the Quarterback” campaign is a community service project that recognizes outstanding defensive effort on the Rams’ football team, while at the same time rewarding disadvantaged families with much needed groceries. The way the campaign works: Every time the BC defense sacks an opposing offensive quarterback during a Rams football game, Food City donates a “sack” of groceries to a local food bank or ministry center to give to someone in need.

“Our football players are very excited to partner with Food City to help alleviate some of the hunger issues our community members face every day,” said BC head football coach Mike Gravier. “In my former work as a local missionary, I saw firsthand the effects that hunger can have on people, especially children.”

Coach Gravier also noted the importance of demonstrating to his players how fortunate they are, compared to those less privileged in the community. He said he’s confident the “Sack the Quarterback” program will show the Rams how people all around them have needs that they can help address, and he’s thankful, he added, for the support from Food City for this cause.

“Food City is a proud sponsor of Bluefield College football,” said Bluefield, Virginia, Food City manager Steve Remines, “and we’re committed to addressing area hunger with the ‘Sack the Quarterback’ campaign. This is a good way to support the football team and to support the community.”

To date, the Rams have tallied eight sacks in the 2012 season, meaning eight sacks of groceries have been donated by Food City to a local food bank, this time the Bluefield Union Mission.

“When asked to find a local grocer who would be willing to support our ‘Sack the Quarterback’ program, I immediately thought of Food City,” said Annette Tabor, BC’s associate vice president for advancement. “Steve (Remines) is a BC alumnus and has always been supportive our golf tournament and other events. So, I knew he would love the opportunity to be part of this new program, and he was.”

In addition to partnering with Food City to alleviate local hunger, the Rams football team has been donating its time to work on skills with area youth football players. The Rams also will be volunteering at Dudley Elementary for its Fall Festival in October.

“Bluefield College believes passionately in service above self.

It’s a core value, a way of life for our students, faculty and staff,” said Chris Shoemaker, director of marketing and public relations. “Through programs like this and other community service outreach projects, our hope is to prepare compassionate, community-minded, globally-minded students who impact their world.”

The 6-foot-1 freshman receiver ranks in the top-37 in two national offensive catigories, 18th in total receptions (28) and 37th in receptions per game (4.7).

Smith is the is the only Ram to have more than two TDs this season. His four receiving TDs along with his 317 yards of total offense leads BC while he is 90 yards ahead of any other reciever this season.

When the Arrington, Va., has multiple catches in each of the Rams first six games while accounting for .311 percent (274-of-881) of the Rams passing yards and .444 percent (4-of9) passing TDs this season.

Redshirt freshman LB Tarell Starckey leads the Rams in tackles (59), solo tackles (32), assisted tackles (27), and tackles for loss (7).

After averaging 13.33 tackles per game in the previous three games the Richmond, Va., was held to a career low five tackles against Union (Ky.) in the Rams last game. He had a season high 17 take downs against Fulkner.

The 6-foot-2 linebacker ranks in the top-36 in two different defensive categories including 30th in tackles per game (9.8) and 36th in total tackles for loss (7).

Freshman DB Anthony Rivers set a modern era record with two interceptions against Kentucky Christian. In that game Rivers recorded 51 return yards on his two interceptions and then broke up another pass that he nearly picked off while also making a tackle. Since that game Rivers hasn’t made an intercepion.

The Chester, Va., native ranks in the top-47 in three national categories including seventh in total interceptions (3), 13th in interceptions per game (0.6), and 47th in passes defended per game (1.0).

The 2012 graduate of Thomas Dale High School is one of just three players in the Mid-South Conference with at least three interceptions and ranks eighth in the conference with his 1.0 passes defended per game.

MR. SMITH COMES TO BLUEFIELD

BLUEFIELD -- Rodrell Smith arrived at Bluefield College having run for 2,332 yards and 25 touchdowns in two seasons at Nelson County High School near Arrington, Va. Sounds like running back material.

“We had been testing the first day and we looked at him and said, ‘We need to get this kid on the field’, but we had a lot of good running backs,” Bluefield College head coach Mike Gravier said. “We weren’t sure how he was going to get into the rotation.”

There are other positions on the football field, and Gravier found one for Smith.

“We decided to move him to receiver,” Gravier said. “That is a huge learning curve, not only does he have to adjust to college football, but adjusting at a new position and obviously he has done well.”

Very well. Smith is a freshman

receiver who is ranked among the top 18 pass-catchers nationally in the NAIA Division I ranks.

“I wanted to play running back, but Coach asked me to try wide receiver and I was willing so that’s where I need to be,” Smith said.

“He asked me ‘Can you catch’ and I said ‘Yes sir’.

“He said we are going to try you and out and I was like ‘okay’.”

Call that a good decision. The speedy 6-foot-1, 190-pound Smith has caught 28 passes for 274 yards and four touchdowns for the Rams.

He has snared nine more passes for 90 more yards than any receiver on the team.

“He is our leading scorer, obviously he is our leading receiver, he is getting better,” Gravier said. “(Receivers) coach (Kirk) Broussard kind of called him out early in the season about his blocking and he has gotten better and better and better.

“He has probably been our most

consistent receiver overall, blocking and receiving.”

In addition to football, Smith ran track at Nelson County, running the 100, 200 and 400 meters, and was part of a state championship squad last June in the 4x400 relay team.

Football, though, was his true calling.

“Just the contact, you can’t get in trouble for hitting somebody hard and I just love the game,” Smith said. “Every day I work harder to get better and go out and play.”

He had a few schools seeking his services on the football field, but Bluefield proved to be the winning team.

“I had a couple of other schools, but I narrowed it down and decided to come to this school,” Smith said. “It was a first year program, I thought I could do great things for the team.”

So far so good. Bluefield is 0-6 in its first season of football since 1941, but Smith sees good things ahead for the Rams.

“It is our first year, but once everyone comes together and does their job and does all their finishing I think we can pull it together,” Smith said. “I see good things coming for us and getting better with steady progression.”

Smith has progressed quickly since arriving at Bluefield in early August, taking over a position he had rarely played in high school.

“You have to work hard every day, you have to go out and get better,” Smith said. “You can’t take any time off, you have got to run your routes precise, very sharp just to get away from the DBs.” That 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash helps.

“It is a real big jump, more speed, more size,” he said, “but it is something you have to adjust to at any level in college.”

Smith started in style, catching seven passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns in the season-opening loss to Pikeville.

“I wasn’t expecting that big of a start, but it was a great game for me,” said Smith, who will never forget the first touchdown of his career. “It felt great, it was a dream come true. It was a great feeling.”

Smith also caught seven passes in last week’s loss at Union. He’s had at least two receptions in each game this season, and is currently 18th in America in receptions (28) and 37th in receptions per game (4.700).

He has quickly learned the basics of being a receiver.

“You have got to catch it, bring it in and get what you can get out there,” Smith said. “I think (the most important thing is to) secure the ball, you don’t want to give up any fumbles in the wide-open field and lose the ball for a bad turnover.”

Smith has developed a comfort level with quarterback Greg Hampton, who has thrown for 780 yards, eight scores and seven interceptions.

“He finds me open every time,” Smith said. “When I get open routes, he delivers the ball well.”

Gravier continues to be impressed with the progress made by Smith and the willingness to make the move to a new position.

“A lot of kids think, ‘I am a star running back, look what I did in high school, why would you want to move me’, but he was very accommodating, more than willing to do it and again has worked at it,” Gravier said. “Some of those kids would do that and mope around and not really put the time in to get better at it.

“He can be definitely a weapon for us down the road, he is going to get stronger and he is going to get faster and learn the game more.”

He’s not just in town to play football. Smith is majoring in sports management with aspirations as an athletic trainer. He’s focused on both in Bluefield.

“Academically, just getting up and making sure you go to class and get your work done,” said Smith, who likes to fish, mostly for bass,

when the opportunity arrives.

“Sports-wise, coming to practice, working hard for the time you are out here and keeping up with your grades.”

Smith arrived in Bluefield knowing one person on the team, tight end Matt Hollandsworth, who ironically scored the Rams’ first touchdown this season with a reception against Pikeville. He is surrounded by talented receivers, including Michael Nesmith (17-184, td) and others who are trying to provide firepower to the Bluefield attack.

“We work every day,” Smith said.

“We come out and Coach works us hard and makes sure we know our routes and know what we have to do, knowing what our plays are and knowing we have to get our blocks and making sure our man doesn’t make the tackle...

“You have to go out and work together, you have to play as a team, everybody has to come together as one and not play individually.”

Bluefield returns to Mitchell Stadium on Saturday for the Rams’ first game under the lights when the University of Virginia’s College of Wise arrives for a 6 p.m. kickoff.

Smith can’t wait.

“I am real well known for playing under the lights so hopefully it will be a good impact for us,” he said.

There is something else he can’t wait for. Hopefully the wait ends on Saturday.

“Get that first win, and then keeping building off of that one,” Smith said.

NAIA TOP-25 LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Four Mid-South Conference teams moved up in the latest NAIA Football Coaches’ Top-25 Poll, released by NAIA officials on Monday.

Georgetown College leads the MSC pack climbing one spot to No. 2 after last week’s 63-21 win at home over Bethel University.

The Tigers (5-0) received 304 voting points and three of the 14 first-place votes to earn their highest ranking since the 2003. The win gave head coach Bill Cronin his 150th win of his career.

University of the Cumberlands jumped three spots into the top-10 after beating Lindsey Wilson College 61-29 on Saturday at home. The Patriots (5-0) received 215 voting points from the national raters after tying a program-record with their 10th straight win dating back to last season.

Cumberland University jumped two spots for the second consecutive week and currently sits at No. 17 in the

national poll. The Bulldogs (41) garnered 121 voting points following last week’s 41-23 win at University of Pikeville.

Faulkner University completes the MSC teams in the Top-25 as the Eagles sit at No. 23. Just like Cumberland, Faulkner moved up two spots after picking up 57 voting points. The Eagles (4-1) stepped outside the MSC last week in a 65-17 win over Point (Ga.) University.

Marian (Ind.) University climbed one spot this week to take over the top spot after Saint Xavier (Ill.) University fell to then-No.10 University of Saint Francis.

Marian received 312 voting points and the remaining 11 first-place votes to lead the poll. Missouri Valley University is No. 3 with 285 voting points. Saint Xavier fell to No. 6 with the loss.

The next NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll is scheduled to be released on Monday, Oct. 8.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Cumberland University’ Lemeco Miller and Campbellsville University’s Blake Young and Casey Clark are the Mid-South Conference Football Players of the Week for the week ending Sept. 29, conference officials announced on Monday.

The weekly honor is the first for all three players this season. Young earns his second weekly conference honor of his career.

Miller accounted for 208 all-purpose yards in the Bulldogs’ 41-23 win at University of Pikeville on Saturday to earn Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

The Huntsville, Ala., senior running back rushed for 116 yards on 15 carries while turning his two catches into 92 yards in the win. Miller scored a pair of touchdowns -one rushing and one receiving -- to run his touchdown total to nine this season.

His 116 rushing yards is his fourth 100-yard game of the season and fifth of his career.

Miller leads the MSC with a 110.2 rushing yards per game. His nine touchdowns are tied for the tops in the conference.

No. 19-ranked Cumberland improves to 4-1 on the season with the win. The Bulldogs are 1-0 in the MSC West Division.

Young set a career-high with 12 tackles in the Tigers’ 1514 win over Kentucky Christian University on Saturday to earn the MSC Defensive Player of the Week.

The Marietta, Ga., sophomore linebacker ended the day with six solo tackles, including three tackles for a loss in the win. Young also blocked the potential go-ahead field goal with three minutes left in the game to help secure the Campbellsville win.

Young ranks fourth in the MSC this season averaging 9.4 tackles per contest. His 8-1/2 tackles for a loss is tied for fourth best in the conference.

Clarke broke or tied four school records in the Campbellsville win to earn MSC Special Teams Player of the Week.

The East London, England, senior kicker provided all 15 of the Tigers’ points with a program-record five field goals. Clarke -- a converted soccer player -- connected from 20, 34, 37, 41 and 52 yards in the win. The 52-yard make matched the 22-year old Tiger program-record to the day.

Clarke also averaged 62.3 yards per kickoff, including one touchback.

Clarke ranks ninth in the MSC is scoring for kickers with 25 points. His six field goals are tied for second in the conference.

Campbellsville moves to 1-4 on the season with the win.

The Tigers are 0-2 in the MSC West Division.

The next MSC Player of the Week awards are scheduled to be announced on Monday, Oct. 8.

HEAD COACH MIKE GRAVIER Coach Mike Gravier became the program’s eighth coach when Bluefield College leaders announced him as the coach man who would restart the program that had been dormant since 1941 during a press conference, July 23, 2010.

“Hiring the right coach, someone who identifies with the college’s mission and has a passion for transforming young men’s lives through the game of football, is critical to the success of this new program,” said BC president, Dr. David Olive.

“I’m convinced we have found that person in Mike Gravier.”

Gravier helped launch a football program as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Malone University in Ohio in 1992. Three seasons later, he became the head coach of the young program, where during a four-year span he amassed a 30-12-1 win-loss record, three Mid-States Football Association Championships, a MSFA Coach of the Year honor, and two NAIA National Tournament bids.

“Mike brings an excellent understanding of the game and effective coaching style to Bluefield football,” said BC’s athletic director, Pete Dryer. “In addition to his experience and success on the field, we are excited to have a football coach with strong character, a passion to live out his faith in Jesus Christ, and a desire to serve and mentor student-athletes.”

Coach Gravier began his career with five years of coaching at the high school level after playing football and earning his bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University in Michigan and while earning his master’s degree from Western Michigan University.

He spent the next six years as an assistant coach at Kalamazoo College in Michigan, Western Michigan University, Southeast Missouri State University, and Michigan Technological University, before beginning his six-year stint with Malone.

He was called back to his alma mater to coach in 1998 and spent two additional seasons as a high school coach in Georgia before devoting his career in 2001 to faith-based ministries, including Christian Outreach International in Florida, where for three years he served as director of sports ministry.

Today, while last serving as an assistant coach for football at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia, Gravier is the director of OperationSHARE for Heaven Sent Ministries in Princeton, West Virginia, but now he is ready to turn his attention to Bluefield College.

“I’m very excited and humbled,” said Gravier about the opportunity to lead the new BC football program. “It’s always an honor to be the first person chosen to lead a football program. It’s a role I don’t take lightly, and I look forward to the challenge. We will play an exciting brand of football. We will play fast. We will be very aggressive, and I believe we will win.”

Starting a new football program, Coach Gravier said, will be a special endeavor. Like the players from 1941 who hold memories from the last game played, players on the new BC roster, he said, “will someday share stories about the first touchdown scored, the first win, or the first championship.”

Those firsts, he added, “are something only the new players

can experience.”

Coach Gravier said in reviving BC football he wants the new players and fans to remember why the program was dropped in 1942 and to honor the young men who joined the war effort and risked their lives to secure our freedom.

“We will use that past as part of our future,” said coach Gravier. “It is my desire to honor those former players in some way. If any are still living, I want them to visit and be a part of our team. If they are no longer with us, their families are always welcome.”

Coach Gravier acknowledged that a new football team will, no doubt, boost the Greater Bluefield economy, offer an additional source for gridiron entertainment to an already football-hungry community, and give more local studentathletes an opportunity to continue their football careers at home in front of family and friends. But, the impact he’s looking forward to most is the one that will involve his players in community outreach.

In line with the Bluefield College mission, Coach Gravier said he hopes to develop players both academically and spiritually. In addition to what the student-athletes will gain in the classroom from professors, through a mentor program with leaders in the community the coach said he wants to develop the players’ career and leadership skills.

The purpose, he said: to develop the whole player.

“We want to show our players what it means to be a good football player, but also what it means to be a leader in the community, a good husband, and a good father,” said Gravier. “Football will be a small part of their college experience, and hopefully the other things they learn that will carry with them through the good and bad times of life.”
