SO CLOSE AND SO FAR Through the first 13 matches the Cavaliers have played eight games decided by one goal. In those matches the Cavaliers are 2-6-0 with their six losses coming to the No. 15 (in overtime) and No. 25 teams in the country. Last season Montreat lost nine matches by two or more goals including results of 5-1 (Bryan), 4-1 (Tennessee Wesleyan), 4-0 (Milligan), and 2-0 (Milligan). Against those teams this season the Cavaliers lost 1-0 to Bryan, then ranked No. 25 and defeated Tennessee Wesleyan and Milligan both 2-0. Over the past three seasons the Cavs have played 23 one goal matches and hold an 11-12-0 (.478 percent) mark in such games. TO BE THE BEST … Montreat in 2013 has beaten the defending back-to-back Conference Regular Season Champion along with last year’s Conference Tournament Runner-up and Champion who also advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. ALL TO PLAY FOR Montreat currently fifth in the AAC standings controls its own destiny heading into the final conference match at Union on Nov. 2. With six of the 10 teams finished with conference matches the Cavaliers need to win their final game to secure the third seed in the AAC Tournament. The Cavs last third place regular season came in 2008 where they finished in the tournament semifinals. A loss could see the Cavs falling as far as sixth depending on the results between St. Andrews at Union on Saturday, Oct. 26 and Virginia Intermont at St. Andrews at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. YOUTH MOVEMENT Cavalier first and second-year players have scored 20 of the teams 24 goals including all 6 game winning goals while providing 18 assists. Last season Montreat scored just 14 goals in 17 matches. GAME WINNERS Evan Allen, Daniel Wolf, Gavin Kneeshaw, and Benjamin Lloyd have combined to score all six game winning goals in their first season in a Montreat shirt. Every assist and goal by Daniel Wolf and Evan Allen have come in victories. Allen a senior from South Euclid, Ohio, scored the game winning goal against Tennessee Wesleyan and then provided his only assist in the Cavs 1-0 win over Reinhardt. Wolf a freshman from Marburg, Germany, netted the season opener winner against Warren Wilson while also providing an assist in that match he then scored the decisive winner against Milligan as the Cavs opened the AAC with back-to-back wins for the first time since PLAYERS OF THE WEEK In the third edition of the AAC weekly honors, Benjamin Lloyd was selected as the AAC Offensive Player of the Week. Lloyd, a 5-foot-10 senior forward from Buckinghamshire, England, recorded two goals and four assists including a goal and four assists in conference play as the Cavaliers went 2-1-0 overall on the week. Lloyd provided both the game-tying and game-winning assist along with scoring the third goal in the Cavs 3-1 AAC win at Virginia Intermont on Tuesday then the 5-foot-10 midfielder scored the lone goal in Montreat's, 1-0, non-conference victory over Bob Jones (S.C.), less than 16 hours . The 2009 First Team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honoree capped the impressive week with both assists in the Cavaliers 3-2 loss at Truett-McConnell on Saturday. The first-year man leads the Cavaliers in goals (7) and assists (6) on the season. In the seventh edition of the AAC weekly honors, Lucas Carvalho was selected as the AAC Defensive Player of the Week. A 6-foot-0 senior keeper from Joao Pessoa, Brazil, Carvalho made eight stops to secure his fifth shutout of the season and fourth in AAC play as Montreat defeated Reinhardt, 1-0, on Sunday evening to move into fourth place in the 10 team circuit. Carvalho has played all 1,204 minutes for the cavaliers making saves on .808 percent of shots he's faced while allowing a career low 15 goals against on the season. The third year goalkeeper ranks No. 48 in the NAIA in Goals Against per Game (1.12) and No. 49 in Total Saves (63).

MONTREAT COLLEGE

CAVALIER NOTES THE START … 1968 The long and illustrious 43-year history of men’s soccer began as Montreat-Anderson College, when MC was a two-year institution thanks to then student David Walters. Walters was instrumental in starting men’s soccer as a club team, he worked with the college’s administration in hiring a coach, Arthur N. “Red” Alderman, ordered uniforms, and scheduled matches. His second, and final year at Montreat (1968) saw the first sanctioned intercollegiate soccer match for the Cavaliers. Walters now the Director of Development at Montreat College played as a striker on the inaugural squad and in 1999 Walters became the first and only men’s soccer player ever honored as an inaugural member of the Cavalier Hall of Fame for his contribution to the college and the men’s soccer program. At the spring athletic banquet Head Coach David Knapp began a new tradition of honoring a current member of the men’s soccer team with the newly established, David Walters Outstanding Contribution Award given to the best example on our team who exemplifies our three areas, student, athlete, and citizen. Stefan Cazzonelli, a sophomore defender was awarded the inaugural honor for his outstanding contribution to the program. HISTORIC WIN On September 13, 2008 the Cavaliers traveled to play then No. 1 ranked (NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top-25 Poll), Lindsey Wilson in Columbia, Ky. After playing regulation to a scoreless stalemate behind six saves from Howard Fisher, it was a ball from Jonathan Viana to the Cavaliers reigning AAC Player of the Year Shaka Bangura that shocked the top-ranked Raiders, 1-0, in the 100th minute. The win improved Montreat to 4-1-0 as they went onto post a 12-5-2 mark, including a 4-2-1 record in conference play and moved up the NAIA National Coaches’ Top-25 Poll to as high as No. 11. HOME OF PROFESSIONALS … NOW AND (BACK) THEN Montreat College Men’s Soccer has developed four professionals since 2000. John Comfort signed with the Wilmington Hammerheads of the USL in 2000. Shaka Bangura followed in 2010 when he made his professional debut for the Puerto Rico Islanders against Minnesota Stars April 10, 2010. Shaka has made 61 career professional appearances playing for Richmond Kickers (USL), Angennisi FC Deryneia of the Cypriot First Division and Samut Songkhram of the Toyota Thai Premier League where he currently plays. Brothers Abdul and Adnan Bangura joined the professional ranks and currently play in Sweden in Divison 2 Norrland at Härnösands FF. AAC CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT Montreat College has been in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament Championship match three of the last seven years. After finishing as runners-up in 2006 and 2009 the Cavaliers won their first AAC Championship in 2011 with an improbable run from the sixth seed to defeat Reinhardt (Ga.), 1-0, Tennessee Wesleyan, 3-1, before surviving Bryan (Tenn.) in penalty kicks following a scoreless 110 minutes of action for the victory. HIGH’S AND LOW’S After winning their first Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament Championship in 2011 the Cavaliers suffered their worst season since 2004 (2-13-0) in 2012 with a dismal 4-10-2 record. OVERTIME In the last 39 matches dating back to the 2011 season the Cavaliers have played past regulation 12 times including six double-overtime results. During these intense and exciting matches Montreat holds a 4-4-4 (.500 percent) mark. Of the known results the Cavs hold a 9-8-16 (.529) record in matches over 90 minutes. OCTOBER 26 The Cavaliers have played three previous known times on Oct. 26. All of those matches came away from the friendly confines of Howard Fisher Memorial Field in Tennessee as Montreat traveled to King (Tenn.), Tennessee Wesleyan and Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.). Montreat suffered an 11-2 drubbing at the hands of Lincoln Memorial in 2002 while the 2007 squad saw their match against King disallowed as it was recorded a forfeit in the AAC Tournament.
