GAVIN MALONEY CONDUCTOR
Contemporary Music Centre Director Evonne Ferguson with composer Raymond Deane
‘COMPOSERS BYPASSED BY HISTORY DEPEND ON POSTERITY TO WAGE THEIR STRUGGLE FOR RECOGNITION. Carl Ruggles (1876–1971) was an uncompromising American pioneer who completed only 10 musical works in his long life. Portals for strings (1925) is typically intense and contrapuntal. My Epitomes, written for the Dublin Orchestras for Young Players, is 20 years old. An elegy for my father is framed by two almost minimalist miniatures. Ripieno (1999), by contrast, is my longest and most elaborate orchestral work to date.’ Raymond Deane
