An outline of our season Highlights of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s 2016-17 Season include two mini-series featuring the work of symphonic giants. Bruckner: Music and Faith features his 5th, 6th and 7th Symphonies together with his Te Deum – music that implicitly and explicitly represents unshakable faith and deeply felt spiritual values. Shostakovich: Testimony offers the composer’s 10th, 11th and 15th Symphonies – great public statements with encoded personal utterances written in the period following Stalin’s death. 02

The season’s strong Russian thread includes a special focus on Tchaikovsky, with all four of the composer’s works for piano and orchestra performed over two days – an extraordinary feat to be undertaken by Barry Douglas, marking the anniversary of his famous win in the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow thirty years ago.

«

The RTÉ Philhamonic Choir will join the orchestra to perform the world premiere of Humiliated and Insulted by RTÉ Composer-in-Residence Gerald Barry, co-commissioned by RTÉ and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Other choral works include Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius and two works within a concert focusing on Arvo Pärt’s music, Salve Regina and Adam’s Lament. The choir will give its own first performance of Handel’s Messiah on 6 January and return to Bach’s St Matthew Passion on Good Friday, 14 April. The recent spotlight The orchestra will on outstanding singers continues with performances of two of Mahler’s greatest song cycles, be led by a range Kindertotenlieder (Patricia Bardon) and RückertLieder (Dietrich Henschel); the elegiac Four Last of outstanding Songs by Richard Strauss (Orla Boylan) and the conductors… » exquisite Les nuits d’été by Berlioz (Ailish Tynan). Extraordinary repertoire from the second half of the twentieth century includes Messiaen’s iconic Turangalîla-Symphonie, concertos for violin and orchestra by Peteris Vasks, Sofia Gubaidulina and Witold Lutosławski; the amazing clarinet concerto of Magnus Lindberg and key works by significant Irish figures, John Kinsella, Donnacha Dennehy, Seóirse Bodley and Brian Boydell (marking his 100th anniversary). The orchestra will be led by a range of outstanding conductors some of whom are returning, including Nicholas Collon, James Feddeck, Cristian Macelaru and Nathalie Stutzmann, and some new faces including Daniel Blendulf, Alexander Vedernikov, Michał Nesterowicz and Erik Nielsen. Included amongst the season’s many exceptional solo instrumentalists are new faces Daniel Hope (violin), Kari Kriikku (clarinet) and Vadim Gluzman (violin) and returning favourites Stephen Hough and Nikolay Khozyainov (piano). In a special presentation in conjunction with the National Concert Hall’s Russian Music Season which spans January through May, we perform with star violinist Maxim Vengerov who will play Sibelius’ Violin Concerto and conduct Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, Pathétique. The Music of Our Time series of free lunchtime concerts in January – April 2017 will present international music alongside new and recent Irish work. The series will include new commissions by Ann Cleare and RTÉ lyric fm Composer-in-Residence Sebastian Adams alongside works by Stephen Gardner, Andrew Hamilton, Julian Anderson, Wolfgang Rihm and Detlev Glanert. 03

SUNDAY 1 JANUARY MAIN SEASON CONCERT

MÁIRE FLAVIN

New Year Celebration Greet the New Year with old-fashioned glamour and gaiety courtesy of a host of Viennese masters from the city of dreams and delectable melodies. ‘With a glittering upper register that suggests she may be the next singer ready to graduate to greater things’ (The Guardian), soprano Máire Flavin joins us for Lehár’s delectably flirtatious ‘Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiss’ (Giuditta) and the intoxicating ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’ from Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady. An array of Strauss Family favourites, including waltzes and polkas, are part of the mix. Get set to dance in 2017 with the rousing Radetzky March and hypnotically irresistible By the Beautiful Blue Danube by Johann Strauss, father and son.

RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra From its foundation in 1948 as the Radio Éireann Symphony Orchestra the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra has been at the forefront of symphonic music in Ireland providing an unbroken stream of concerts. Since that time, the orchestra has firmly established itself as a primary force in Irish musical life. World-class conductors associated with the orchestra’s early days include Jean Martinon, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, Edmond Appia, Milan Horvat and Sir John Barbirolli. The first half of the 1960s saw Tibor Paul as Principal Conductor, a tenure memorable for the visit of Igor Stravinsky.
