Thanks to Crap Mariner, celebrity blogger and robot cross-dresser, SL musicians have a new way to reach audiences inworld and beyond. Crap has created the “Tunes in SL Gallery” as a way for residents to find and purchase music created by SL musicians. The gallery features clickable album art that provides a link to the songs for sale at either iTunes or Amazon. Unlike some inworld music vendors, the two external outlets allow more flexibility, letting music shoppers take advantage of gift cards and special promotions such as “Pepsi Points.” Musicians who wish to be added to the gallery should contact Crap Mariner inworld or at http://riaa.isfullofcrap.com/

The annual SL Human Rights festival was held December 10th -15th. Over 30 sims participated in numerous events, mostly concerts of popular virtual artists. The exhibitions will remain open to the public through January 20th.

Linden Lab’s Winterfaire 2008 started on December 19th and will last until January 5th. Watch out for the mainland regions of Wengen, Voss, Zermatt and Moritz, as well as the many others who are participating, for events such as Snowman Building Contests and the popular Lindens v.s. Residents Snowball Fight.

Two SL dance companies are currently staging their popular winter shows. La Performance’s “You Are So Beautiful” features modern dancers on a large sky platform in the Shakespeare sim, “SL Style” with music by Zucchero and Queen. Ballet Pixelle’s “Nut” features a rendition of the familiar story of The Nutcracker with music by the Bolshoi Ballet Theatre Orchestra in the IBM 10 sim. Performances for both are held every Sunday, at 2 PM SLT and 5 PM SLT through January 18th.

Last month, a real life British couple’s marriage ended in divorce after the wife discovered her husband was cheating on her in SL. Amy Taylor 28 and David Pollard 40 met inworld and moved in together shortly after, and were then married in both worlds. Taylor caught her husband “in the act” in SL and filed for divorce in real life. This is the first incident of the kind to ever be reported.

Fancy Schmancy will celebrate the Grand Opening of their new main store at the brand new sim, Vertigo, featuring FashCon HQ, FashCon Cafe, LUSH Studios, Nowhere Virtual, SasTech on Sunday, January, 4th at 3pm SLT at HYDE Club located on the sim.

The US Army will begin recruitment in SL in January by setting up two island sims. One island will function as a center to provide information, and the other will hold activities like parachuting and weapon usage, all designed to encourage young people to join the army. COVER STORY On the set of “All the Little Fishies”

Winston Ackland started performing in Second Life™ a year ago with no more flourish than that of any other inworld musician. His unassuming manner and appearance was in contrast to what many knew right away - Winston was an exceptional musician, songwriter and performer. Winston has patiently developed his fan base over the year with great music and a warm connection with his audience. In October of 2008, Winston would raise the profile of the SL music world and become an ambassador of sorts for our community in general. The real world Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation contacted Winston with a request to use his stylized cover of Kurt Cobain’s song “Lithium” for a scene in their major motion picture “Marley and Me” released in the United States in December, 2008. While this exciting news buzzed through the SL press, Winston was already working on a new and innovative project just for our world - an ambitious music video shot within SL and ROLE Magazine was there. By Jura Shepherd

On the night before final editing of “All the Little Fishies”, director Sesi Ackland and machinimist Toxic Menges are talking on the set at Rainy Town. “Even rock stars can trip” says Sesi but then quickly adds “we won’t see the trip though, right?” From thousands of miles away in the real world and sounding exhausted, Toxic replies “hopefully!” The two, along with Second LifeTM musician Winston Ackland, are nit-picking a transition scene that amounts to about 3 seconds of footage in the roughly 4 minute long music video that has been 6 months in the making.

The idea of creating a music video for Winston Ackland’s signature song “All the Little Fishies” came after Winston made an appearance on the “Tonight Live with Paisley Beebe Show” in July of 2008. Among the other guests was filmmaker Brigitte Kungler who was presenting her award-winning machinima piece “Chameleon”. Ackland was inspired. He says “we wanted to do something creative with someone from a different discipline” so he and “trans-reality” wife and manager Sesi Ackland began the planning stages of making “Fishies” into a groundbreaking music video.

Type the words “Second Life Music Video” into your favorite internet search engine and you will no doubt find more than you care to see. A music video filmed in SL is certainly not a new idea but most lean on the novelty of having been created in a virtual environment and aren’t interesting much beyond that. There is no shortage of sweeping shots of a performer’s avatar, standing at a prim microphone while strumming on a prim guitar. A truly cinematic narrative, scored to fully produced, multi-instrument music by an inworld musician is the rare exception.

The choice of song was never a question. “All the Little Fishies” is a favorite of Winston fans, who sing along with the cartoonish and vaguely biographical song during his performances. Winston is a real world music professional and self-described “studio rat” so he was anxious to re-record “Fishies” to make it perfect for the video. The initial tracks for the remake were much like that of the live, in-world performance but Ackland soon added sounds that are often excluded from SL performances. Tracks with other instruments such as drums and electric guitar were added as well as bass, 10

accordion, Wurlitzer piano, tuba, harmonica and even mechanical tool noises. The end result was a rich and eclectic blend of sounds that kept the parade anthem feel that his listeners had come to know and expect.

possibility of stray avatars wandering into the shot. Lag would turn out to be the biggest issue in filming the video. Even for the scenes that were shot at Twas, director Sesi Ackland and machinimist Toxic Menges had to predict, much like a meteorologist, and plan around periods of heavy use in SL by its population and even heavy use of the World Wide Web itself. Sesi puts the lag issue into perspective by saying, ” we sort of planned around our limitations in SL. We were careful to not daydream too much.” She goes on to add that “there were several times we would have liked to have had a lot of avatars in the room all doing something and we shied away from it after realizing how hard having just 5 of us in that underwater cave was and 4 of them were just sitting on a poseball!.”

With a fully produced audio track for “All the Little Fishies” recorded, the Acklands approached machinimist and friend, Toxic Menges, about filming the project. “I’ve been a fan and friend of the Acklands for a long time, and have heard the Fishies song live probably a couple of hundred times. When you hear something that many times you grow close to it and I was excited by the chance to bring some motion to it” says Toxic. Winston and Sesi had a general concept idea for “Fishies” but as Toxic says “…the filming has been a very organic thing, and it’s very much been a kinda team thing”. With her previous work on “O”, “Le Reve”, “LoveLife” and “Forever Autumn”, Menges also brought much-needed machinima experience to the set of “All the Little Fishies”. Winston laughed and said “usually, I show up and sit on a pose ball”, but in truth there was massive effort going on around him.

Back at the Rainy Town set, Sesi, Toxic and Winston tend to nuances of the final piece of the “All the Little Fishies” video. The dreary, rainy and grey theme of the sim, or merely near exhaustion, may have influenced the crew but for sure there is a bit of sadness realizing the project is nearing its end. The estimated L$75,000 production cost seems like nothing compared to the time and emotional investment that went into “Fishies”. By the time this story hits the press the video will be distributed and press releases to make the SL community aware will have been issued. “All the Little Fishies” is without a doubt a brilliant piece of work but even so, the creators can’t help but to apprehensively wonder how their work will be received. ” That’s a wrap” says Sesi Ackland over the voice client but it sounds more like a question than the confident command of a director and to it she added “I think I need a cry”. Within an hour of uploading the newly finished video, the Acklands and machinimist Toxic Menges were flooded with enthusiastic instant messages of praise for their work.

In concept, “Fishes” was never intended to be literal but the Acklands knew that simple eye-candy scenes weren’t going to be good enough. The song itself is based on odd occurrences and associations in Winston’s real life and the video was to give an abstract narrative of these. One challenge in making the video was that the avatars in it needed to actually act and needed to do so within the restraints of what we are capable of in the world of SL. In addition, there were no animators on the crew of “All the Little Fishies,” so to create action for the scenes, they used off-theshelf animations and poses that are available inworld. The animations were then strung together in whatever sequences were needed to make the scene. Many residents of SL can easily appreciate the challenges of directing avatar actors from thousands of miles away but there are other, less obvious challenges as well. Over the course of filming, the “All the Little Fishies” video required 60 separate pieces of high definition footage, and at the time of editing it occupied a staggering 750 gigabytes of storage. In addition to the data handling concerns there are logistical issues unique to filming in a digital world. Much of “Fishies” was shot on custom-built sets at Twas, the Ackland’s private sim. This reduced lag and eliminated the

FASHION ICON Carissa Crimson

In Second Life™ Carissa Crimson dares to be both the “girl next door” and a “super model maven.” and ROLE Magazine took a recent opportunity to spend a little time with Carissa to talk about her SL. By Babyhoney Bailey

It’s 3:00 am on a Friday night and I’m sitting on my back porch, lighting a cigarette, while listening to Carissa Crimson giggle on the line as she makes herself another drink. She has a contagious laugh and a girly pitch to her voice. Carissa is the type of girl who gets automatically tagged with adjectives like “good” and “nice” whenever her name comes up in public circles.

buy them, thanks in part to accepting syndication requests on FashionFeedofSL.com. It’s hard not to want to follow Carissa’s style and try to emulate it. In real life Carissa is from the southern part of the United States which is evident if you happen to catch her in voice on a night when the combination of trusted company and the flow of alcohol influence her not to play down her southern accent. How did a nice, southern girl become one of SL’s heavy-hitters in the style and fashion world?

Joining SL in 2006, as a male avatar by the way, one could say Carissa’s seen some of the best and worst of times in SL fashion, and having taken simple risks here and there it’s possible she fell victim to questionable fashion choices a time or two as well.

You could attest Carissa’s achievements to her spotless record of professionalism and a nonthreatening air that promises to offer encouraging criticism instead of insult. While the inside joke among friends is that she’s “Carissa “F’n” Crimson,” the truth is that she’s actually quite modest.

Carissa is a chameleon and wears whatever matches her mood at the time, coupling “it items” with pieces you might not have seen before (usually because they were unreleased) to make a look totally her own – all the while remaining in her personal comfort zone. Carissa says, “I just wear what looks good to me. That usually translates to slacks rather than jeans, clean lines, coordinating colors, classic accessories, and blond hair.”

Having been nominated as one of Runway Magazine’s Top Models of 2008 her response was more shock than expectation. She says, “I work on so many different ventures that I didn’t realize so many considered me on the same level as the true top models of Second Life. I really appreciated the photographers and designers who thought of me during nominations. I’d love to extend congratulations to both Jonny [Tobias] and Payton [Heron], who are very hard-working models. “

Being friends with Carissa is like being friends with the girl with biggest closet, and Lord … if it were possible to borrow clothing in SL! Sole owner of FashionFeedofSL.com, co-owner of the popular Crush Row shopping district, one time co-owner of FACES Modeling Agency, Maitreya CSR, and full-time blogger – Carissa is a multi-faceted asset to SL’s fashion scene. Carissa stays on top SL’s clothing trends, often getting to wear the newest SL fashions before anyone else has the chance to

Being a “fashion icon” takes more than knowledge of “who’s who” in the fashion scene. Carissa has a real personality and, as clichéd as it may sound, personality is as important as whose shoes she wears and where she bought that perfect dress. Likewise, no 38

a gifted inworld photographer. Carissa carries her real world work ethic and ambition into SL where she carries these key traits to ensure her success as a shape creator, model, photographer, blogger, web designer, fashion forward trend setter, rising to every occasion for all that she sets out to do.

Carissa is currently working on her own line of fashion-forward shapes (yet to be released) and is 39

FOR MEN BONE MOSTEN & JAMES SCHWARZ

Style is about being unique no matter if you’re referring to the real or the virtual worlds we inhabit. The two well-dressed men we are featuring in this month’s Male Fashion Section know that all too well! James Schwarz and Bone Mosten present two outfits that capture both their character and panache exclusively for ROLE Magazine. By Sienna Fredriksson

James has a sophisticated approach to fashion. He doesn’t have one particular look. James likes to experiment by mixing things up to see how they turn out. He alternates between formal and casual with ease, nevertheless keeping that “worldly wisdom” feel to every ensemble he puts together. For this photo shoot, James opted for seasonal red and transformed a somewhat traditional outfit (of the cardigan-shirtpants tri-fecta) by adding playful touches with an interesting hat and trendy plaidpatterned loafers.

Bone’s style is the embodiment of how to put together different elements to create an innovative look - a very “now” trend. You can glimpse more of his style if you visit Bone’s blog. It’s all about striking the right balance; a dash of punk here, just enough to keep the ensemble edgy but without looking clichéd, and a sprinkle of old school spirit there, to give the appearance of a more reversed style, but also for an unexpected twist of the “geeky hot” look. Bone picked practical and comfy jeans and a printed t-shirt with loafers to match, adding some subtle extras to spice things up - his tattoos and cuffs.

fashionism Shape

Fashion. The word encompasses so much in our virtual world. When we think of fashion we think of clothing and accessories but it’s oh so much more. When we join Second LifeTM our inworld canvas, affectionately called our avi (avatar), requires a skin and a shape for us to express our personal styles upon. That is unless you are comfortable with the standard issue Linden avatar look — and more power to those who are! By Shelby Ziskey

In our real lives images of female bodies are everywhere. Women, and their body parts, sell everything from food to cars. Popular film and television actresses are becoming younger, taller and thinner. Women’s magazines are full of articles urging that if they can just lose those last twenty pounds, they’ll have it all— the perfect marriage, loving children, great sex, and a rewarding career. Why are these standards of beauty and fashion being imposed on women when the majority are naturally larger and more mature than the models? The roots behind this trend, some analysts say, are economic. By presenting an ideal difficult to achieve and maintain, the cosmetic and diet product industries are assured of growth and increased profits.

other people respond to my avi’s changes. Do people act differently towards me because my behavior has changed slightly, or because their thoughts and attitudes change when they see my avi’s shape grow larger or smaller? We all become attached to a certain set of expectations and it’s fascinating to see what happens when we choose to mix it up. Shapes have been covered over and again in magazines and blogs pertaining to SL but I wanted to look at the psychology behind the shapes we choose. Psychology Today found that 56% of the women and 40% of the men who responded to their survey were dissatisfied with their overall appearance. A simple definition of a person’s self image is their answer to this question - “What do you believe people think about you?” A more technical term for self image that is commonly used by social and cognitive psychologists is self-schema. Like any schema, self-schemas store information and influence the way we think and what we choose to remember. Men’s body image is a topic of increasing interest in both academic articles and in the popular press. Current research indicates many men wish to become more muscular than they currently perceive themselves to be often desiring up to 26 pounds of additional muscle mass.

When you consider that in SL a well-crafted skin is around L$1,000, hair L$200, basic clothing and shoes - $L700, not to mention accessories, you are looking at quite an investment to personalize your avi. Many of us are rockin’ the modified Linden Noob shape and have been happy about it for years. Some of us have exaggerated our shapes with liberal use of those slider controls and there are even those who have gone beyond the magic slider high end number of 100 and added prim augmentations for emphasis. With the ability to morph endlessly into virtual characters, most of us choose a perfected resemblance of our real selves. I have recently purchased some new shapes and have been surprised at how my own attitudes and thoughts change when my appearance has been altered. More surprising is how

With that in mind, seeing nubile, lanky women proliferating the grid makes a lot of sense. Right on target, no-necked, muscle-bound, small-waisted men seem to support this research as well. Do we build these avatars according to our own ideals? 50

Do we allow the media and other avatars influence our choices? Do we work out our body image issues subliminally on the grid? We know the images that we see are influenced by media advertising, why do we comply by creating avatars that reinforce the ideal rather than the realistic?

yourself in the ways that you find most fruitful. Grazia Horowitz is well entrenched in the SL fashion scene. When I caught up with her and asked her thoughts on this issue she shared, “I think that shapes in SL are both underrated and exaggerated. The proportions are exaggerated, and the importance of a good shape is underrated. I can’t blame the average stripper for having a shape with big boobs and ass. After all, she’s kind of advertising herself, and apparently it means ‘I can give you a good time if you make L$ disappear in my cleavage!’ The same goes for the body oil and Redgrave skins (body oil and silicone implants included). What I find more disturbing are designers and bloggers with disproportionate avatar bodies. Torsos that are way too long, ‘fashionable’ people who use a skirt shape for wearing trousers, a size 4 frame with size 12 juggs -- it makes me cringe. Pair these settings with size 100 legs and size 30 hands and you have a freak of SL nature but no one will ever talk about it. And that is the odd thing! Why is everyone all over the stripper for her choice and not all over the blogger or the designer?”

One person that has been successful at breaking the stereotype is Rosie Barthelmess. Rosie runs a successful inworld business and has done some high-profile modeling. Rosie says, “as a plus-size avatar, as I’ve been since my very first day in SL, this is something I’ve thought about more than once. The plus-size, or more “realistic” avatar shape is growing in popularity. Two years ago, I couldn’t TP into a store without someone asking me, “Why would you want to be fat in SL when you can be ‘perfect’ here?”. She goes on to say, “that question, although legitimate, always made me feel that my choice of avi is less than perfect or flawed in some way. But really, what makes me, as a plump avatar, any different from a furry, a robot, an elf, a dragon? They are all shapes or entities that are ‘sub-classes’ of avatars if you want to look at it that way. Unfortunately, as with any homogenous mentality, people who live their entire existence in an original avatar are put in positions where they are asked to conform. It happens in ballrooms and dance clubs that do not allow non-human avatars (even nekos) on the premises, or designers who create no-mod prim accessories and expect us all to be one size or willing to tweak our avatar in order to wear their creations.”

Grazia says of her own avatar, “I’m making my shapes in SL more realistic. They are 65 high, which still is an impressive 6’ 1” and I am a huge fan of body fat and body thickness. I give avatars hips and some ass but the boobies on my shapes are hardly ever larger than 55. I play with jowls and under-chins because I think they can give a face character. Making shapes more extreme will only stretch skins and clothes in a bad way and that’s a shame for fashion.”

Interestingly, Rosie concluded with, “I chose my shape because when I joined SL, I wanted to feel comfortable in my own skin. When I looked at my ‘toon the first day, in the default shape, I couldn’t relate to her. When I made her short and round, I suddenly felt like she was an expression of me. I think that’s the important thing. If you are a real world heavyset person who is expressing the ‘thin, beautiful person inside,’ or you are a more mature person playing a younger-looking avi, or even if it’s just easier to express your creative or silly side by presenting yourself as something fantastical — if you’re going to get the most out of this experience, you need to do it in a way that makes you the most comfortable and allows you to express

I would like to challenge you to think about your shape as well as your image and try something new. Do you have unconscious biases within game when you see avatars different than yours or your friends? The emotional reactions to all of these choices not only help us learn about others, but more importantly, learn about ourselves.

Back again for another installment of fashion “how-to, where’d ya, and oh wows!” I had a few interesting questions this month and I am eager to share them with you. It’s a new year, and I hope you have all made some great resolutions that you plan on sticking to! You know, maybe something like not buying those sculpty shoes by the fat-pack - just getting the one color you really love because you are spending too much damn L$? Errrm...., *clearing my throat* yeah, well, anyway .... By Felicity Blumenthal

Dear Felicity, I don’t have tons of L$ to spend. Every time I turn around another designer is putting out new skins! I keep going and buying demos but then never actually picking one because another great skin is released. I need serious help! How do I figure out which is the best skin to buy?

of the two styles, are offering us something else to consider and are a good middle-ground if you cannot pick. In my case, I used to always wear my Redgrave skins. They are extremely realistic and photo sourced. I still do swear by Redgrave but I have had the opportunity (especially recently) to come to appreciate many other skin designers. I suggest that you look at - - [The oBscene], Belleza, MMS, and LF CHAI represents a wide range of styles and each is different in their own right.

Sincerely, Skinless Dear Skinless,

A final suggestion for you in your great skin search is to echo what you have said. Buy demos! Don’t purchase skins on a whim. Take the demos home, strip naked and examine the entire body. Think about what you really want. Is it great make-up? Freckles? Body tone? Oh, and the age old question, shaved or unshaved? If you are the type of person that chooses only 1 skin then you should be certain the skin has all the features you like.

I feel your pain, really I do. I used to agonize over the same issue all the time. I can relate to your L$ issues as well. In my case, I need someone to stop me. Seriously. Take my credit cards away! However, when it comes to skins, it really is a personal preference. I can give you a list of skins that I think are fantastic but they might not be for you? The big difference is if you prefer “photo sourced” or “hand drawn.” You might prefer skins with the hand drawn touch but you might not. Recently the new hybrids, which are a blending

Best of luck and send me pictures! 54

Dear Felicity, When I’m out in SL I always end up spotting things on people that I want. I feel like it is sort of rude for me to just IM someone and ask them where they got their hair, or accessories, etc.; however, I will torture myself thinking about it for days and try desperately to find the item(s) on my own. What should I do? Is it rude to ask someone? Am I being silly?

are some ways around asking - if the item you are coveting is an attachment - skirts, pant legs, bracelets, shoes hair, etc., you can move your cursor to the attachment, right click your mouse, choose “more” then “inspect” and find out all you want on the creator or, while in edit mode, click on the item in question. This way you’ll never have to admit you were worshipping a stranger’s keen fashion sense. Not that I would ever do that or anything .. often!Best of luck and send me pictures!

Sincerely, Forever Searching Dear Forever Searching,

Well, that’s all from me for the moment, y’all. Please keep the questions coming - I am really enjoying them! I look forward to reading your emails and sharing any tips I might have. You can either drop me a message inworld by notecard or e-mail: felicity@role-magazine.com

First and foremost do not be afraid to ask! I still do it! If I see something I have to have I will let nothing stand in my way, short of ripping it off the poor avi’s back! I get plenty of people asking me what I have on and I am always happy to share. So to answer your question, “no,” it is not rude at all. On the flip side, if you are just super shy, there 55

HOUSE & LIVING Little Treasures of the Furniture World One of the brilliant things about Second LifeTM is that it allows people to be creative in all aspects of their Second Lives or “slives” as we like to call them. From fashion, to music, to building you can always find something unique on the grid - a perfect example are the SL home and furnishings businesses. There are tons of furniture stores dotted around the grid ranging from the every day standard items that you would find in your daily real life to the more obscure items that could only be found in the wonderful world of SL. The obscure builds are my favorite kinds of treasures as they truly show that in SL creativity knows no limits if you have a bit of imagination and building skills. By Keeley Huet

One of my personal goals is to find the most unusual items on the grid. There is nothing I love more then to find a new, tiny store selling only a handful of items with incredibly-detailed craftsmanship. A good example of detailed craftsmanship is a little-known store called D-lab Plant which is located in a beautiful shopping mall called Albata. D-lab has a small selection of very unique plants and trinkets. Their “Cyber Plant Light” is by far my favorite item in the store. The cyber plant light is a fantastic combination between organic materials and electricity. The lamp features an old fashioned light bulb glowing on the end of the long stem which is something that you could only find in SL.

some quirky items such as the “Radio Ostrich Tower.” One of my favorite items in the store is the “low table set” consisting of a little side table and lamp. The set is color-changeable allowing you to match it perfectly to any room with one click. As an added bonus, when you click the table there is a built-in sit poseball providing you with an extra seat, which is always handy for when you have people visiting. If you are searching for a new bed then look no further than Plenty for Everyone (PFE). PFE has a fantastic snuggle bed that I think is one of the best in SL for a number of reasons - primarily because it’s a bargain! The snuggle bed has tons of poses built-in ranging from PG moments to more R-rated ones. The bed is texture changing and comes with a huge selection of colors and patterns. Also included with the bed are two different types of pillows, one plain and one color-change, so you can mix and match. In addition to beds PFE has a full range of products from side tables to couches to little trinkets. PFE carries an adorable “fairy in a bottle” which talks in chat when clicked but be warned - it’s not always a friendly fairy!

Did you know that the well-known clothing store Kurotsubaki has a tiny furniture shop on the AKASHIC sim? Kurotsubaki’s furniture store is filled with well-crafted items for your house. A standout piece is the giraffe bookshelf (available in 3 other animal shapes). The giraffe’s belly is a perfect little bookshelf filled with a collection of oldlooking books. The detailing is extraordinary from the knobby knees to the perfectly rounded nose.

If the “truly unique” item is what you seek then look no further than the amazing range of items at ::PLOD:: The “Robot Chair” won me over the first second I saw it. The chair is a tiny, retro-looking ro-

bot with a drop-down menu that offers 3 different sitting positions. If you choose seat option one or two you will see the robot chair magically transform into a much larger robot. While visiting ::PLOD:: be sure to check out their amazing builds. The “Apple Tree House” is something straight out of a Tim Burton movie. The ::PLOD:: “Big Squirrel Chairs” are to die for and who wouldn’t want a huge caterpillar on a leash in their front garden? I know I do!

ART Making Art is an Ability

On November 29, 2008 the new Avatrait Gallery sim officially opened. The Avatrait’s new buildings were created by Prad Prathivi and Corbett Howard - 2 amazing artists, known not only for their inworld photography but also for their excellent building skills. By Looker Lumet

The Avatrait gallery is located on an island in the sky shaped with futuristic angles and contours. All of the works on display are on one level of the gallery. A large, round dance floor occupies the gallery’s center. The gallery includes vendors for the Avatrait’s artists with their beautiful works for sale inworld including the possibility of buying the framed art real world.

Another artist I want to mention is Ryker Beck. Ryker’s talent is evident in all of her works (including jewelry) and she is also the perfect person to teach budding artists the basics to become a successful artist in Second Life. I attended a class taught by Ryker in which she revealed many of the tricks that an artist should know that are hidden in the complex photography platform we are all working with and “living” in. The information shared during Ryker’s class was so thorough and professional that I am convinced the students knew what to do to solve problems with the virtual camera when the class was over. Ryker’s professionalism is evident in her works. Ryker’s tips were recently shared on her blog and recently on Deviant Art.

The Avatrait Gallery opened as expected with a show of beautiful art work featuring 35 artists. Most, but not all, of the artists post-processed their work into magnificence with the help of graphics editing programs such as Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro or GIMP. While post-processing is popular there are many artists who choose to not post-process their inworld snapshots. One of these artists is the well-known, charming Shoshana Epsilon.

The works of Shoshana Epsilon and Ryker Beck can be viewed on Flickr™. If you’ve never heard of Flickr™ it is a website where photographers can store their works. Go to www.flickr.com and search by artist name or topic.

I mention Shoshana because she is one of the leading inworld photographers in the area of art without post-processing. Over the years Shoshana has received acclaim for her ability to set her inworld camera preferences in such a way that the images almost seem to be post-processed even though they are not. The work of Shoshana Epsilon is the perfect example of the true definition of inworld art. Shoshana’s pieces are a perfect guideline for anyone who wants to take inworld photographs but doesn’t have the knowledge of post-processing software. Inworld photographers can learn a lot just by studying and admiring Shoshana’s work. One can almost inhale the atmosphere in which the picture was taken with a perfect angle, light and pose.

ART There is Great Art in Second Life!

Second Life™ is a world replete with excess, and its art scene is no different. To say that there are art galleries in Second Life is like saying it often rains in London. But while there is art to be found almost anywhere, indeed there are far, far too many “galleries” that should simply change their names to something like “Art Mart” (We’ve got pictures that will match your sofa! Guaranteed!), the real task is to find the good, the worthy, the art with a capital A. I invite you to join me on a quest to seek out Art in Second Life. On this journey I will travel to the places where the art is and winnow through the chaff to find the evocative, the beautiful, the exceptional, the exciting-new, the magnificent-old. In a word, the Best. Here are some good places to start. By Kee Llewellyn

The Dresden Gallery.

reason as to why they’re all here. And now, an entire room of Tintoretto and a long gallery of Canaletto. And look there! Eight or nine minor Rembrandt’s stuck in a corner (and really, their best, Rembrandt and Saskia in the Scene of the Prodigal Son in the Tavern, is at best a very minor work, more’s the pity). And the Vermeers! (Quel sacrilege!) Dropped into a back corner of the museum is one of the master’s loveliest works, Brieflezend Meisje bij het Venster (Girl reading a Letter at an Open Window) tucked almost as an after-thought between a doorway and a much larger, early work, De koppelaartser (The Procuress) that does little to advance a viewer’s understanding of Vermeer’s body of work and completely overshadows the greater, though physically smaller, painting.

Sponsored by and modeled after the real life Alte Meister Gallerie, at Pillnitz Palace, Dresden, this enormous build is about the closest you will come in SL to wandering the halls of a real life, serious art museum. The walls are crammed with art spanning some 500 years of European history, from a dozen nations and by hundreds of artists. The Museum itself is quite beautiful and arguably a work of art itself, being an 18th century summer palace for the Saxon court and the builder has done a wonderful job recreating it in Second Life. The museum is typically European in layout and sensibility: rather like those Manor houses maintained by the National Trust. Paintings are hung cheek-byjowl and top-to-bottom with a bare nod towards order or significance. Unlike a typical American museum in which the displays are tightly organized in educational/functional units, the Dresden Gallery is an exercise in exploration and discovery. It is a collection intended to be admired. An educational resource for those already educated. Oh, look! Yet another room in which all the paintings were done within the same 25-30 year period, by half a dozen or more artists, major and minor, all from the same approximate country, with no seeming relevance or

At the end of one long corridor you find a room crammed with 18th century portraits (mostly Rosalba Carriera), where an exquisite pastel by Swiss artist Jean-Etienne Liotard, La Belle Chocolatière (The Chocolate Girl), hangs between an utterly unremarkable de la Tour and another far less worthy Liotard self portrait, all far too closely packed to allow a viewer to focus on the better of the three. It’s as if the curator has no idea what he has and hangs things based on relative proportion and available wall space. Honestly, the selection process seems to have been, “We need a big something here, with four smaller ones 64

around it. What have we got?” No one seems to have really asked, “What can we learn from this work? Or the works around it? What influences or relates to or speaks to what?” These questions remain unanswered. One minor exception is two paintings from Reubens’ studio, one by the master and a copy by one of his students, The Drunken Hercules being led by a Nymph and a Satyr. We are provided a discussion of the differences between the pieces (through a very good audio tour that describes about 10% of the pieces in the museum), but the paintings are hung at opposite ends of the gallery so it’s not possible to get them both into view at one time: when you are facing one painting your back is to the other.

real museum). You can stumble upon beautiful works to admire and ignore those which bore you (just as in a real museum). Perhaps best of all you can make arrogant, snap decisions about the relative merits of the works presented with no one there to tell you how silly you are being (just as in a real museum!). The Dresden Gallery features a museum shop that doesn’t appear to actually sell anything although the museum has several donation points throughout. Visitors can pick up a free t-shirt, a renaissance hat and costume, and some smokes. In the gift shop you can see that someone at the museum does, indeed, know what the major works are: There you find (but cannot buy) the better Vermeer, the glorious Liotard, the Rembrandt (such as it is), and of course that scourge of museum gift shops the world over, those two annoying cupids who gaze up in such bored (and boring) apathy from their home at the bottom of Raphael’s The Sistine Madonna. But you’re in luck! Because here at the Dresden, you can go upstairs into the galleries and see Raphael’s original, complete Madonna as one of the few properly presented pieces in the museum. Enjoy!

The museum has chosen the awkward solution of attaching a note card giver to every painting allowing you to read the artist’s name, dates and a small amount of information about each work... and to collect some 750 note cards in your inventory if you choose to keep them all. There’s got to be a better way to manage this information. These may be criticisms, but don’t misunderstand me, I love the Dresden. I’m sure I will be going back again and again. The museum is a treasure-trove that offers an almost unlimited wealth of exploration and pleasure. You can wander the halls for hours (just as in a

VMOA, Virtual Museum of Art Whatever you think of Austrian-Irish painter and photographer Gottfried Helnwein’s work, ambiva65

lence will almost certainly not be an option. His work is provocative, elegant, upsetting, beautiful, moody, atmospheric, disturbing. Go see for yourself! Helnwein’s work combines an exquisite formalism with subjects that teeter on the brink of, well, name your poison: Nazis, pickled fetuses, klansmen, creepy mad hatters, dead Donald Ducks, vulnerable little girls (with guns!), people with their faces wrapped in bloody bandages, tape and frightening surgical appliances, Marilyn Manson. Keep in mind that most of these hyper-photorealistic works are paintings, done in water colors, oils and mixed media. In a career spanning more than three decades, Helnwein has managed to create images that will unsettle almost anyone while at the same time hold them spell-bound with their ethereal beauty. The Virtual Museum of Art is home to Helnwein’s work alone, which occupies the first two floors. That there are currently empty upper floors at the VMOA hints that it may one day expand.

This is the New Media Consortium and The Museum of Hyperformalism’s “Kiss the Sky” exhibit. Set your time of day to midnight and your draw distance as far as you can for the full effect. What is Hyperformalism? Well, the exhibit press release describes it as, “[N] on-figurative abstraction in hyper-medium [which] has been known to include abstract objects arranged in simulated space, navigable on a network as well as expressions of reactive and interactive artwork behaviors and geometric or algorithmic pattern play in 2, 3, and 4 dimensions.” (Whew!) What all that means (I suspect - I could be wrong) is that without the constraints of reality and gravity the works presented here can exist without prior expectations or restraints. They are non-representational, conceptual and compositionally self-contained. They can float, move, act and react within and through their own environment almost like living things. When hyperformalism is interpreted and presented by artists such as those in this exhibit, such freedom from constraint is freeing for the viewer as well. Adam Ramona’s ‘A Rose Heard at Dusk’ is utterly lovely, as is his ‘Blue Music Sculpture’ (wander around inside). There are wonderful works by Nebulosus Severine, Glyph Graves, Chance Abattoir, AngryBeth Shortbread, Sabine Stonebender, elros Tuominen, i7o Zhu and others.

OK, here’s a find! Go to AM Radio’s New Media Consortium Arts Lab. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we’ve all been to the cool little radio shack on the lake. That is not what I’m talking about (although it is deeply cool). No, fly up about 700 meters and look around -- you’ll be in awe. 66

I spoke with exhibit curator DanCoyote and he observed, “Marshall McLuhan noted that our culture tends to walk backwards into the future; “Kiss the Sky” is about walking forward exploring things that cannot happen in the material sphere.” The sixteen artists in the show were, “hand-picked from the ones I consider to be the most influential and highest-quality artists working in the native arts genre in SL. The show,” he continues, “is an historical document, a ‘survey’ of the most innovative native practitioners in SL.”

The wonder of Second Life is that very nearly anything and everything can be done here. The works of great masters can be exhibited in virtual museums that would be difficult for many people to visit in real life, albeit with the honest drawback that the representations are not very high quality. But none the less, how else is a person of limited means able to visit and experience a place like the Dresden Gallery in the real world unless they are fortunate enough to live nearby? Artists can create works here that simply cannot be created in real life. I truly look forward to more galleries and museums offering the best of the real world and the virtual world’s art here in Second Life. I am doing all that I can to find it and I promise to tell you about the very best of it here, every month, in ROLE Magazine.

We can look forward to this show being updated soon as new artists are added and current artists update their installations -- be sure to visit often. I asked DanCoyote what else is on his horizon and he told me that he is working with the ZeroG SkyDancers, the first networked performance group in SL, on a new production which will be their fourth inworld. I’m looking forward to covering that performance in a future column.

ART Ritchey Sealy Chasing Light and Fire!

Ritchey Sealy, an Australian painter born in 1962 in Gosforth, is famous for his work in abstract and impressionist painting and is regarded as one of the well-known impressionists in Australia; the Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland has represented two of his masterpieces in their collection. Ritchey Sealy is especially identified with the subject of the light in landscape paintings and coastal works. Inworld he is known as Ritchey Jacobus. I had the opportunity to interview Ritchey Sealy and find out more about his work. By Don Hosho

Don Hosho (DH): You are creating paintings as old impressionist masters while you are self taught. How did you get to this level?

DH: You told me one day that Claude Monet is your “soul teacher” in painting. Would you tell me something you have learned from him - one example?

Ritchey Jacobus Sealy (RJS): Time takes care of that. I just go out and paint, maybe 8 paintings a week, and have been doing this for 29 years. Not every day though! Sometimes I may not paint for a few days.

RJS: I have learned how to make some layers in the under paint, in darker tones then working over with lighter tones, and it is called a “washing” technique. There is a wealth of information on the internet to see how artists work and YouTube has demos from many artists. My brother Kasey Sealy has produced some great “how to paint” DVDs. Please feel free to check his site www.kaseysealy.com.au.

That’s not all; also, I understand the art of painting and the theory behind art. That happens by reading art books, going to galleries and studying art works of the masters.

I work very quickly outdoors to capture the effects of light, a painting will take maybe half an hour for a 20 x 16” piece. I live in such a beautiful area and I know where to set up quickly for the best views.

Roughly 40 years ago I read my first art book and it was a learning experience. It certainly helped me to start painting, but my country and it’s light are the original inspirational icons to get the real start, also seeing beautiful art works my family made. When I was growing up my family would go on picnics on weekends and my Dad would always do a painting.

DH: Did Second LifeTM bring you some real life clients? RJS: Yes, I’ve had a few sales from SL that resulted in my work going into real life collections. If people want to buy my art they can through my website ritcheysealy.photography.com.au or see my work inworld. This is what I like about SL - in real life I could never have a global gallery like I can in SL.

DH: Would you tell me a bit about your Father? RJS: His name is Charles Seal; he never really pursued art as he loved to build houses; however, my uncle pursued art he is famous, his name is “Doug Sealy”. 68

DH: When you joined SL did you know you would build a gallery here?

RJS: I study martial arts, as I used to teach karate, and I do go to the gym regularly.

RJS: I had been told about the possibilities in SL so that’s what got me interested. I was selling on eBay already but really it’s the interactions in SL which interests me. The tools are easy to use so now I can rebuild a gallery and design it to suit my works.

DH: What do you advise SL residents who want to start real life painting? RJS: I advise them to look in their local area in real life for classes, to read about art, and paint a lot. In fact, the more they paint the more they will learn, and they will really have a lot of fun.

DH: Painting is your only career in real life? RJS: True, although I volunteer as a fire fighter in my local community. In Australia we have very bad bush fire seasons; there is a service called “rural fire service” which people join then are trained in aspects of fire management. I have been a fire fighter for 15 years.

DH: Is it possible to give painting lessons in SL? RJS: This is possible with streaming and such although at this stage I am not sure how. What I personally intend to do is take pictures of my art in the developing stages and load them inworld and then perhaps make a book. In addition, I hope to make a short YouTube video of me painting soon.

DH: Do you have other hobbies besides chasing fire and light?

LITERARY Welcome to the Poet’s Brain

The Poet’s Brain, part art gallery, part networking hub, part Beatnik café and the creation of Laila Tomorrow, just opened for business on December 5th, 2008. By Verde Otaared

The atmosphere of the café is comfortable and calming but at the same time thought-provoking. Tomorrow commissioned artwork by Parris Galli to fit the candlelit muted purple and mauve room. Next to the café is the HNC Artist Lounge, which will display a changing selection of artwork. Laila Tomorrow originally came to Second LifeTM for her real life job of recruiting and networking. She uses her skills to recruit talented artists to her gallery next to The Poet’s Brain and the musicians, poets and storytellers who perform in the café. Four poets performed at the opening event: Raayne Jaxxon, Persephone Phoenix, Radegund Bracken and Aianna Oh. The MC for the event was LadySen Laval, a poet herself, who shared a few verses between performances. The opening event also included a poetry contest in which each poet wrote a piece that would be read at all future Poet’s Brain events. Each poet read their piece aloud and the audience voted. Radegund Bracken’s piece garnered the most votes, although all the poems were wonderful.

ment in it, to keep it accessible.” To access future performances you can join her group “Whimsivore” in SL. Raayne Jaxxon performed her very personal poems. She says, “Poetry is my way to communicate my life, my struggles, my personality and character. I write to escape the tear stained pillows that my profile knows all too well.” Listening to Jaxxon was like hearing experiences of an old friend blended with the lyricism of a good ballad. Poems are personal and attending a poetry reading makes them even more so. At the Poet’s Brain there was a palpable connection between the poets and the audience. Poet Persephone Phoenix says “the first poems were songs, reading poetry aloud keeps it truer to its roots. Few of my poems rhyme or use formal meter, but even still, poetry should have moments where the voice can hush or soar or do something extraordinary.” Aianna Oh started writing as an 8 year-old child and has published two novels in SL, Volumes 1 and 2 in a series entitled “Valley of the Ivory Swan.” They are available at The Booksmythe on the Winterfell sim.

In an interview after the opening Bracken told me that writing is her passion. “Why do I write? I can’t NOT.” She likens poetry to sculpture – a way for the writer and the reader to share the same way of seeing. Bracken is also a talented performer. The energy and joy that she effuses makes her poems come alive as she reads them. Influenced by poets such as Lewis Carroll and Dr. Seuss, her poetry is joyful, uplifting and a delight to hear. She says, “the main thing is, no matter how wild the subject matter, to find that universal ele-

Is there something special about a poetry reading in Second Life? Certainly it is easier to attend an event in SL than traveling in to one in the physical world. SL enables us to connect with people we wouldn’t ordinarily have the opportunity to meet. As Bracken puts it, “you can quite literally have an international audience, with people listening in, standing in the same virtual room, but sitting in real life in their respective rooms all over the world.“ Aianna Oh says 72

“In real life people judge you first by your appearance, but appearance in SL has very little meaning. We are all as beautiful, as plain, or as ugly as we wish to be here. So people in SL tend to judge you on your mind, which is as it should be regardless. There are so many talented artist in every medium in SL. Granted there are in real life too, but there are many more people in real life who are willing to scorn everything one does.” The Grand Opening at the Poet’s Brain was just the start, Tomorrow says she plans weekly events: Tell-A-

Story Night, Good News Night (spiritual), Jam Night (with musicians jamming) and Open Mic Night. To find out about events at The Poet’s Brain, join The Poet’s Brain-HNC Alley group. You can also hear poetry at Persephone Phoenix’s Blue Angel Poets’ Dive, especially on Sunday’s at 5 PM SLT when they have open mic night. So add some rhythm and beauty to your SL experience with live poetry readings.

Come In! by Radegund Bracken O Welcome, you who dance against the grain Harmonic as the thunder to the rain O Welcome, you who seek a different strain To liven up the song of the mundane O Welcome, you who give your books the rein And miss your stop while reading on the train O Welcome, you who, when you wake again, Find folded pages changed your cheek’s terrain O Welcome, you who sing the old refrain To stave off fear, for music keeps you sane O Welcome, lovers of that wilder plane Where no word spoken’s ever said in vain For all of you, if this is your domain O Welcome, Welcome to the Poet’s Brain!

ROLE MODEL HELP PEOPLE! When I started to think about the phrase “Role Model” and what one really is for this feature I found myself realizing a need to define what a role model is to me. Does the term role model imply a person that is viewed as a perfect and beyond reproach? What about the unknown, imperfect or even dark sides of a person? How do you ever know enough about someone to call them a role model in the truest sense? How could I feel comfortable choosing a role model outside of my own circle of friends and acquaintances? If we’re not careful when we choose and bestow titles the words will lose their meaning. By Leeza Catteneo

where he could learn to build dance animations. A female newbie was expressing her frustration over where to safely change clothes in public. She didn’t have an inworld home and would find herself booted from locations when she tried to demo skins or attempted to adjust her skirt prims. The Helper suggested tips of how to hide while changing skin or clothes and directed her to the dressing area down at the freebie area. I wasn’t aware of this common newbie problem but now I can appreciate how useful it would be if store locations included dressing rooms for SL residents who do not have a private place to change or rez their purchases.

I decided that, to me, a role model is someone who is helpful in a selfless manner. With that definition, everyone could be a role model in SL. A newbie could be a role model as well as an experienced resident, a designer or the Lindens. Often times it’s the little things we do to help each other every day that make our SL easier. I was jumping from place to place across the grid, thinking about the “role model” definition when I landed on the Help People Sim. I was standing at the landing point and watching the crowd. I saw newbies chatting, walking around with the typical duck walk, dressed in dazzling colors and robed with weird attachments, asking questions after questions in open chat to anyone who would listen.

Most people would agree that helping newbies is a great way to volunteer your time and many places in SL offer this service. As I browsed the Help People Sim I found myself at a sign listing “The Five Fundamentals.” The sign read; 1. Ditch the negative attitude; 2. Show appreciation to others; 3. Be a good listener because “only then you can talk in terms of the other person’s interests”; 4. Make other people feel important; and, 5. Help People.

In the crowd I noticed an avatar sitting in a prim wheelchair having a conversation with one of the Help People staff. I pulled up his profile and saw in his 1st life tab that he uses a wheelchair in real life, too. His avatar was jumping involuntarily as a result of his voice recognition software which he uses to play SL. As I was mulling over how voice recognition software would work inworld I watched the Helper teach him how to find classes in SL

Feeling inspired, I checked the Help People homepage and found that this is not only a SL organization but also a real life company, Help People ® Inc., 74

located in Austin, Texas. Help People tries to realize “The Five Fundamentals” in their first lives as well as in SL. Their slogan is “Help People - It makes your life nicer!” and isn’t that exactly what the definition of a “Role Model’ should be? Role models aren’t defined by who spends the most money or has their store logo featured in one of the well-known fund raising locations. A role model volunteers their time to help a guy in a wheelchair to learn where to take classes on avatar animations or helps a newbie learn how and where to change their clothes. It’s the small things people do that add up to the feeling of community and support. It’s an interesting realization and now I am considering what this means for my first life, too. Personally, I think there could be no greater start to the new year than to follow the motto: “Do unto others ‘first’ what you would have done unto you.”

travel guide galonge

It’s surprisingly difficult to find that perfect spot of “full-on awesomeness” in Second LifeTM - a place that hasn’t been tread upon by fifty thousand little prim feet or been changed to fill the pockets of the owners with silver and gold. The GALONGE Sim is billed as an “unknown civilization in Second Life” and that’s what it is. A space that time and the drive for SL-fame has overlooked and somehow, mercifully skipped over. By Twisted Vendetta

I’ve never had the great pleasure of traveling to Egypt. I’ve never walked the paths of the Pharaohs, ridden a camel across the desert or dipped my shirt in a cool pool of crystal blue water to fend off the searing heat, but I’ve been to GALONGE, and in SL, that’s not far from the real thing (although I didn’t find a camel to ride anywhere on the sim). GALONGE may not be “a perfect build” and I did spot a few glitches with the prims, but the overall ambiance and the time put into creating this sim more than makes up for a few, small bugs.

opportunities to improve upon his craft. There is a quiet beauty in the simplicity of the design. The plants are laid out in a realistic manner, scattered around the blue pool of water near the hieroglyph chambers. You will not find a sim full of poseballs set out for perfect photo opportunities - instead, there is simply a walking path for couples to stroll hand-in-hand and that seems right for GALONGE. One of the builds on GALONGE is an intricate series of aqueducts on standing columns, which runs overhead and along the perimeter of the small Egyptian village, providing water to its inhabitants. If you are willing to suspend your perception of reality for a moment you can almost see a pack of children running with reed buckets to gather water from the mouth of the aqueduct in your mind’s eye. Visitors who continue

GALONGE (yes, the name is supposed to be in all caps) was built by Asimon Jacks, someone whose name may not be on the lips of sim owners in need of a gifted SL-architect, but I predict that after more people visit GALONGE, Asimon will be given more 76

down the path will find giant, well-detailed “guardians,” if I am correct in my understanding of the history. Akibe Sixgallery adds to the detailed touches with a tongue-in-cheek twist - Japanese cat masks are placed upon the faces of the massive sphinxes.

The Akibe shop, owned by Akibe Sixgallery, is a standout boasting a small, yet very well done, collection of Japanese masks for sale for L$333 each. After an hour of scouring every nook and cranny of GALONGE, I realized I still hadn’t seen everything. The GALONGERIUM Mining Tower stands in the center of a mined ore mountain held in place by a series of sculpty ropes.

West of the ginormous “Japanese cat sphinxes” is the Colosseo, built by Hidenori Glushen, and stands as a difficult-to-pass-up photo opportunity. Moving to the southeast corner of the sim, visitors will find what I like to call “The Stronghold of GALONGE” built by Asimon Jacks into the side of a large mountain. The mountain is traversed by a pathway that doesn’t impair your camera controls and enables you a wealth of shots which is important if you’re like me and enjoy photography in SL. To reach “The Stronghold” by foot be prepared to navigate through a series of mazes in the mountain. You may have to resort to flying if you get lost.

The detail afforded to all of the insignificant and significant pieces of GALONGE is admirable and beautiful to see. From the Colosseo to the Mining Tower to the small swing and the sphinxes, as well as even the couples walk on the aqueduct that overlooks all of GALONGE, it is one of those “must see” locations. Even if you’re not into archaeology, or you’re not a history buff, the hour or two that it takes to see every minute detail of the build is well worth it and I guarantee that you’ll leave with more than just some amazing photos.

In the southwest corner of GALONGE is a small cluster of shops. Do not expect a mini-fashion bonanza trapped in history and time in ancient Egypt though.

this is sl, too second health

It was one of my first days in Second Life™ and I was tired of shopping (It happens on rare occasions - but yes, it really does happen). So I decided to just move off to the side and let SL pass me by for awhile. At that moment I received a teleport invite from a friend of mine. I clicked it and found I had jumped straight into a model of our solar system. Amazing! I could jump from the sun, to the planets, to the moon and then back to the sun. It was so exciting! I found there was a lot of educational lessons to pick up while I was flying about several constellations. Playing with models of the moon, the planets and the stars, helped me comprehend some points of astronomy that I previously hadn’t fully understood. By Leeza Catteneo

This experience taught me what a great educational instrument SL can be. Big concepts can be realized on the grid, to provide a visual 3-D example, which helps visitors understand the basic idea - even if you’re a natural blonde like me.

garbage can, mailbox, gasoline containers, etc. If you click on the objects you are given information about their toxicological relevance. Okay, the toxicological relevance of a garbage can or car might not be such a big surprise but what about the High School? Well, I went there to explore the classrooms and here is the good news: I learned of at least three scientifically proven reasons to play hooky!

Today there is a wide-range of projects and builds in SL where the virtual experience is used to offer an educational opportunity to residents. It surprised me to discover that there are a lot of projects dedicated to health care in SL, since an avatar has a constant health level. So I put on my explorer heels and went off to visit some current inworld projects. Here are my experiences with two of them.

After this exploration I felt greatly inspired. I walked into several homes and stores, through the streets, visited the beach and had a Chromium-flavored ice cream from the Magical Ice Cream stand in Tox Town. Yes! Funnily enough I haven’t heard of that flavor before but I’m sure the information picture of the ice cream waffle will tell me more! But, since I found some new reason to stay away from school, I decided that I was educated enough, at least for today! Even though I’m sure I will go back to Tox Town to learn more.

Tox Town Tox Town is a beautifully designed sim with several every day locations like homes, a school, a park, offices, stores, a beach and even stinky places! These spots represent the every day hazzards located in such places real world. In this virtual experience you can explore and learn and there is no chance of you getting sick or absorbing toxic levels of chemicals.

Polyclinic Next to Tox Town I found other sims dedicated to health. This project, run by the Imperial College London, started in August 2007. What I found was a nice 3-D environment explaining the future concepts of hospitals and how they might treat me after I had my extra portion of Chromium-flavored ice cream. I walked around and explored several buildings, each

I found it really interesting to walk around and read the notecards and see the pictures handed out by several items at different locations on the sim. There are a lot of clickable signs and items like a 80

of them representing a part of a Polyclinic, a 3-D future concept in SL “based on the models in NHS (National Health Service) London’s report A framework for action,” Davee Commerce stated. I watched the videos and found some very interesting models of future Robotic Surgery, built by Shukran Fahid. I wasn’t sure if it scared me that those robots could be part of my future real world health care experience. The Polyclinic helped me understand the concept and I’m sure I will visit this place again to learn more. The robots were standing on a place which is also used by the international Virtual Association of Surgeons (iVAS) to hold it’s seminars and conferences with speakers from Universities, Hospitals and Engineering Research Centers from all over the world.

Again, I was impressed by the range of educational opportunities, which Second Life offers all peoples from all over the world to exchange and present ideas in a virtual community and 3-D environment. The builds are impressive and the information was informative. Even I felt like I learned a lot of new things about future concepts of Robotic Surgery and Health Care, as well as what a big role virtual environments might play in the future of education.
