COVER STORY URSULA

As recently as March 16, 2009, Linden Lab chief executive Mark Kingdon dismissed rumors of the demise of Second Life®. Kingdon claims a Second Life population growth of 25% since September, 2008 and states residents were in-world 41.5 million hours in the month of January, 2009 compared to 28.3 million hours in January, 2008. Actual residents of Second Life understand these numbers are not only unlikely but extremely misleading as they do not take into account the many bots and alternate accounts currently on the grid. By Ofelia Laval with contributors Tomac Sewell and Rohal Schnyder

Kingdon said, Linden Lab is “reworking the user experience. We have hired a world-class-team to lead the changes. You ain’t seen nothing yet. A lot of work is going to be done in the next 9 to 12 months.”

Teen Second Life™) is fundamentally directed to an “over-18” audience, some content is clearly more conventionally “adult” than other content. As our community continues to grow and the range of uses for Second Life continues to expand, we’re committed to preserving the openness that is a cornerstone of the experience. At the same time, we need to ensure that all Residents can engage in our virtual world in a manner suitable to their needs. To this end, we will begin to implement certain access controls designed to better serve certain constituencies -- specifically, educators and professionals, as well as the creators and users of adult content. Our goal is to make Second Life more enjoyable for all Residents by giving them greater control over their in-world experiences.”

One such change is a crackdown on adult content. Very soon, adult content will be available only to residents who have complied with the Linden Lab age verification process. Age verification entails that residents provide “a few simple details about their identity; generally, name, date of birth, and address. Additionally, residents will be asked to provide specific identifying information, such as a driver’s license number, passport or national ID card number, or the last four digits of a social security number (this is dependent on where geographically the resident is based). This is then crosschecked against pre-existing databases of public record to verify that Residents are of legal age.”

In an interview with Metanomics in January, Philip Linden shared Linden Lab’s intent to merge the adult and teen grids. In an internal Linden Lab move which seems to echo this intent, Blue Linden, the popular Teen Grid Community Manager, has been reassigned to a new position. Curiously, the Adultoriented content controls FAQ states, “There are no immediate plans to change Teen Second Life™.” The Lindens’ have all but fallen silent on this issue; however, one can clearly see the stage is set to bring in the teen grid residents and adult content on the mainland will be as easy to wipe away as pushing a button once the adult continent is populated.

In-world search functionalities will not return hits on adult content for residents not cleared through the age verification process. Owners of private estates will be required to flag the land as “mature” and require age verification for entry. Adult content on the mainland must move to Ursula[1] - an “adult continent” or cease their adult activities. Just exactly how these changes are going to be implemented remains unclear. Linden Lab is mid-way through a six week open comment period for members of the community and just this month released the Adult-oriented content controls FAQ[2]. Linden Lab explains the need for this change, “While Second Life® (as opposed to

Residents are encouraged to voice their opinions on, in part, the definition of “adult content” in the community forums[3]. Linden Lab has loosely stated the definition of adult content will include extreme sexual 11

and violent behavior and will be an expansion of the current Community Standards[4] which addresses indecency, “Second Life is an adult community, but Mature material is not necessarily appropriate in all areas. Content, communication, or behavior which involves intense language or expletives, nudity or sexual content, the depiction of sex or violence, or anything else broadly offensive must be contained within private land in areas rated Mature (M). Names of Residents, objects, places and groups are broadly viewable in Second Life directories and on the Second Life website, and must adhere to PG guidelines.” As a side note, it is an interesting mental exercise to imagine a peaceful coexistence between residents seeking in-world “extreme violence” sharing space with those wanting adult, erotic encounters.

the SL platform was an educational novelty, providing a nice break from textbooks, students unanimously agreed they preferred “walking the wards of real hospitals and interacting with real patients.” While there is a push by Linden Lab to transform the grid to a feasible means for virtual education and seminars one can’t help but question this reasoning. Anyone who has attended an event in SL knows first-hand the frustrations of lag and sim load limits. Other large questions loom, such as whether or not adult content business owners with mainland parcels receive priority on the adult continent; will these business owners be protected from a financial loss when relocating; and, how will LL handle the high-use load of the adult continent? Many residents have pointed out that it would be much simpler to build a viewer with added functionalities allowing the user to filter search and land for items flagged as G or PG. Along that same vein, it would be far easier and efficient for residents who wish to live a G or PG existence to have access to a new continent designed with that rating instead of attempting to identify and uproot existing adult content businesses and activities.

The reasons behind Linden Lab’s forthcoming content segregation are unclear because, frankly, there seem to be multiple reasons for this decision. As more and more real world businesses abandon their virtual presence the media is also moving on and paying less attention to the Second Life grid. One could argue that the most press Linden Lab has received of late was the highly-publicized real world divorce of Amy Taylor and David Pollard[5]. Taylor and Pollard each had an avatar and Taylor caught Pollard having a cyber-affair and subsequently filed to end their marriage. Linden Lab claims this move is in response to resident feedback yet Linden Lab has apparently no plan as to how business owners will be relocated to Ursula or even specifically how adult content will be defined.

Linden Lab has been slow to release definitions since making the announcement of the adult continent. In the SL community forums, Cyn Linden and Blondin’ Linden have stated that sex beds in private homes are not at risk, rather sexual themes represented in advertising is what tips the scale towards classification as adult content. As we learned during the controversial Openspace changes, Linden’s fielding forum questions are not always correct in the end, and the current knowledgebase article on Maturity Ratings[7] will be the final word. [Editor’s note: Linden Lab pulled down the Maturity Ratings page after initial publication. Reference to this page remains as it should reappear soon.]

Linden Lab is scrambling to polish SL’s image while courting educational institutions and corporations, such as IBM, to host corporate conferences and meetings on the grid. IBM and Linden Lab released a case study[6] in March claiming IBM recently saved $320,000 USD by holding two corporate meetings in-world instead of incurring meeting and travel expenses real world The study discloses the sixteen sim meeting space took several months to complete and acknowledges the sims were placed behind IBM’s corporate firewall to create a secure location.

For now, the Linden representatives’ current interpretations of these changes are all we have to go on. They are saying popular role-playing groups should not be affected even, surprisingly, those with violent or sexual play as long as it is not advertised (thus appearing in “search”) as such. Jack Linden has gone on record stating extreme violence will include torture and dismemberment. While

The Imperial College London reports that their students have used the grid for a pilot program (not part of the official curriculum) to teach medical students lessons on issues such as hospital protocol. While 12

the actual definition of adult content is a shifting and slippery target it is interesting to note Linden Lab claims only 2 to 4% of mainland adult content will be affected. How can Linden Lab claim such a low number of businesses will be affected when they have not defined adult content?

to-commit, campers and griefers. Those on the continent will presumably be seeking to participate in or purchase adult content and will likely have lindens to spend. It is reasonable to assume businesses with a non-adult content will seek a storefront on Ursula to target and sell to the vetted adult residents.

Prospero Linden released Server version 1.26 for testing which includes the new “Adults-Only functionality[8] on March 12th. One could argue this release indicates decisions have been made with regards to adult content and the process is much further along than residents have been led to believe. The one assumption that seems safe to make is that once this server release is stable the change to the adult continent will begin.

As a person who holds a real world corporate job I can’t help but think the actions of Linden Lab feel like those of a company preparing itself for sale. From the recent departure of high-profile representatives Zee Linden and Katt Linden, to the change to the land structure and the policy changes allowing multiple accounts, viewers and bots to artificially inflate the number of users online. Linden Lab is swabbing the decks and slapping on a fresh coat of paint. If Second Life remains under the control of Linden Lab there is nothing that will stop them charging for access to the adult content on Ursula, increasing tiers or even instituting subscription fees.

Whatever your opinion, opening a business on the adult continent will have some advantages. A continent allowing only age-verified residents (presumably those who registered a credit card) will exclude or severely limit alts, bots, minors, noobs yet-unwilling-

tice Bill (HL Bill 33)[9] clearly defines images which constitute a criminal offense. Section 52 of this Bill thoroughly defines Possession of prohibited images of children and outlines this definition. Linden Lab has a corporate obligation to follow the laws and regulations that govern their business around the globe. Linden Lab must demonstrate the necessary flexibility to both navigate the rapidly-changing global legal landscape and show loyalty to the SL residents. Residents have created this virtual world so you could say we have lived up to our end of the bargain.

It is now the responsibility of Linden Lab to figure out how to deliver on their promise:

MASCULINO DAY AND NIGHT

The fashion offerings in Second Life® are unfair for the male population. One can easily find female clothing and accessories but it is much more difficult to find quality male clothing. Not all content creators design clothing for the male population as the majority of the male population doesn’t shop as often as females; however, a lot of men do care about their looks and thrive to have their own unique style. For them, it’s a thrill whenever there is a new release in male clothing or accessories. Thanks to the fashionable male avatars, the offerings in quality items for men is increasing in SL. By Ana Lutetia To start with a few styling tips, I decided to showcase plain and simple classic looks. In a world of beautiful people, one can always recognize good taste in choosing a nicely-textured piece and combining it with another without leaving your own comfort zone. A lot of SLer’s are young adults, most in their 30’s, and these young adults like to dress casually yet fashionably. These looks are for guys that want to present themselves as classy but don’t want to go around from shop to shop to create an outfit. The DUTCH TOUCH male section is a great referral for a lot of young guys because it offers styles from grunge to more simple looks and all clothing is top-notch. INDI Designs has amazing accessories (and full outfits) and are the designers of this cap with hair and sneakers. Caps or hats that include prim hair are a great choice for those who want to wear a hat but don’t want to spend a whole lot of time editing prims to perfectly adjust the hat. I aimed for a simple look but you could easily add a prim belt, necklace or a scarf to further accessorize the look. While the first ensemble might be called a day-time look, this second outfit can easily be worn at night even thought its main colors aren’t black. Most night-time looks are based on the color black but one can look stylish and distinctive wearing classic colors like brown or blue. This outfit would be perfect to go clubbing. The blazer will give you a classy look and the open-button shirt exudes a stylish male vibe. This ensemble features no accessories or prim attachments. The textures are detailed and speak for themselves; however, you could choose to add a small scarf around the neck.

FOR MEN RYAN DARRAGH & STOKELY MAYFAIR By Express Zenovka

Ryan Darragh decided to go with a stylish look that makes him feel comfortable. After spending a while pondering over what makes him comfortable, Ryan realized that it was the designs and designers that he kept returning to over and over again. Ryan’s skin, one of his favorites, is one of a few skins he’s found that is available with multiple brow colors. In fact, just about everything in the ensemble -- from his hair and eyes to his clothes and accessories -- are all his long-time favorites. Ryan’s always had a penchant for steampunk, so it’s no surprise that he’s managed to sneak in a bit of steampunk flair amongst all the rich texturing. Stokely Mayfair calls his outfit the “darker side of spring,” inspired by the overcast skies and rain he’s been experiencing locally as of late. While he believes that spring is a time for bright colors, he can’t wear those outside yet because of the cold and rain. In fact, the dark colors actually do a good job of hiding all the muck he has to trudge through. When the skies clear up, and an umbrella isn’t necessary to stay dry, Stokely will definitely wear the pleasant, traditional colors of spring. Till then though, he says, “Don’t bust out those pastels yet!”

THE TRUTH IN In the past few months, consumers and potential advertisers have responded to the economic down-turn by expecting a high-level of credibility and transparency in advertising. With this thought in mind, ROLE Magazine has decided to publish our true, verifiable readership numbers to allow potential advertisers the opportunity to clearly see the value in advertising with ROLE. It is important for business owners to maximize their advertising budget and we understand that everyone is best served when substance is offered in place of hype. ROLE Magazine is a monthly publication available both in-world and online. Our online format uses the Issuu – You Publish platform which provides detailed data on the number of times a single publication was read. Issuu plans to upgrade their service allowing site visitors to see the number of times a specific page has been viewed. In the meantime, we have begun posting our readership data on the ROLE Magazine website and we commit to updating our data regularly. ROLE Magazine advertisers are able to receive detailed statistics outlining how many times their purchased ad was viewed, and they can request specific information, such as which ad placement positions tend to receive the most attention. Business owners have expressed their frustrations in accessing verifiable readership information from in-world publications. Online readership numbers are easy to prove but the in-world readership numbers are nearly impossible to substantiate. How can an advertiser be sure that an in-world magazine, featuring their double-page ad, and delivered through an automated system (such as Subscribe-O-Matic) will be read or even opened? The same question is raised every time a magazine kiosk is clicked and that click is counted as a reader. There is no way to know that a magazine delivered in-world was actually read. Furthermore, it is far too easy to artificially inflate in-world readership statistics by clicking multiple times on a magazine kiosk. ROLE Magazine is choosing to ignore our in-world readership numbers and will stick to those we can verify online. Click here to learn how to verify the published data on your own. Welcome to SPRING! This edition of Dear Felicity focuses on spring cleaning our closets – just in time for those who find they’ve run out love for their current clothing collection. We’ll also take a look at the great men’s shoe debate. By Felicity Blumenthal

Dear Felicity, I think I am in a fashion rut. I log in and feel like I have nothing to wear. I imagine that you must have an amazing closet full of clothes, so I don’t know if you ever have this issue, but what can I do to stop this urge to just trash it all?

the feeds and see what the designers are releasing for new, fresh. spring-time looks. Check out our fashion spread this month, focusing on the change of season, to find some great ideas. If you are on a budget why not buy some new accessories? New jewelry, shoes or hair can do a lot to change a look. How about mixing up some of the outfits you have? Try wearing a shirt a different way or layer it up.

Sincerely, Nothing to Wear Dear Nothing to Wear, Well, I don’t think you are alone with this feeling at all! I often feel like I have nothing to wear in spite of my fantastic closet! I think with the change of season we all have an urge to sort through our inventory and start spring cleaning. I do think it is a great idea to go through your clothing inventory and sort out what you know you aren’t going to wear anymore.

Dear Felicity, I have finally found some decent men’s clothes in Second Life®, but I am still having trouble finding good shoes. Can you help? Sincerely, Hot n’ ShoelessMake Him Over

But, don’t trash everything! When I am sorting my inventory I consider “Is there a chance in hell that I will wear this again?” If the answer is “Absolutely not,” then it can go. Don’t hang on to something just for the sake of keeping it. Your inventory will thank you.

Dear Hot n’ Shoeless, Congrats on the new wardrobe! I think there has been a big improvement with menswear in SL. Of course I think there is still a ways to go but the designers are getting there. It is the supply-anddemand of it all. Not as many men as women are

interested in how they look *sigh* which, I think, is just a damn shame! I can recommend a few places with excellent shoes. The first is Hoorenbeek. You will undoubtedly find your largest and best selection there; casual, sneakers, formal shoes and boots. You can also find quality men’s shoes at Shiny Things. Their selection is not as vast but the quality is exceedingly good. And, finally, you might try Redgrave, again--small selection, but fantastic, sculpted shoes! Thanks for the interesting questions this month! Our next issue focuses on weddings so I’d love to hear your questions on the topic! You can either drop me a notecard in-world or send e-mail to felicity@role-magazine.com.

HOUSE & LIVING PUT A LITTLE SPRING IN YOUR HOME

Spring signifies the end of winter. It’s when the sun starts to creep out, flowers begin to blossom and the doom-and-gloom of winter leave our thoughts in favor of more fresh and fun activities. In the virtual world of Second Life® we have the luxury of changing season to season with the click of a mouse. Luckily, people and designers in SL also change with the seasons, which mean there is always an abundance of new items on the grid to tempt us. By Keeley Huet

One thing about spring is that, of all the seasons, there are endless possibilities for creating gardens. Gardens are often forgotten when we buy and develop land. We just plop down a house and that’s the end of it! Often we just add a tree here and there and maybe a few flowers. With springtime knocking on our doors, I thought it would be fun to not only explore some indoor looks, but also have some outdoor, spring-time fun.

are creative and fun, ranging from neon pink flowers with butterflies, to glowing trees that have skulls. The furniture is much of the same. It’s all very rustic, mostly made with lovely wooden textures, and varies widely in colors and styles. I am a sucker for anything that has flowers or hearts on it so when I saw a lovely, painted wooden table with a heart border, I immediately clicked “buy.” This piece serves as a terrific alternative to an outdoor picnic table. The matching stools are super-cute with coordinating colors and prints. This item screams springtime and could easily be used inside as a dining room table.

You can’t think of spring-time and not think of the fabulous shop Mudshake. It has an impressive range of outdoor plants, trees and furniture. The store itself is spread out over a fair bit of land, which is nice because you actually get to see what you are buying first-hand instead of having to rely on vendor pictures. Now, be warned! If you are looking for your run-of-the-mill, standard, realistic-looking plants, this is not the store for you. The plants at Mudshake

Another item that caught my eye was a little chest of drawers, brightly colored, with a big skull on the front - extending over the drawers themselves. I know you are probably thinking, “Hmm, skulls sound a tad harsh!” but, like many of the skulls that seem to show up in store designs, these appear to be based on 48

traditional Mexican “Day of the Dead” skulls. They are highly-detailed and colorful so they fit perfectly within the slightly mad world of Mudshake. So if you want both fun and bright there really isn’t any alternative!

kind of Lord of the Rings movie set when you rest under its branches (minus the Orcs, thankfully!). Picnic also offers great furniture, too. The festival bench is lovely and comes in various color options. The dark wooden texture is highly detailed and the little rope of glowing lights that hang just beneath your legs finishes off this bench perfectly. So, if you want to set a mood or atmosphere, look no further than Picnic.

Sometimes the garden isn’t always about bright colors – it’s about atmosphere. I stumbled across Picnic a few months ago in an attempt to find something fantasy-themed and I wasn’t disappointed! Picnic offers something a little darker, a little moodier. Their fantasy tree is just beautiful. It’s a lovely, big tree with overhanging vines and a twisted trunk. There is an option to have little, floating sprites that drift around the tree giving it a dreamy look. The foliage on glows a soft green and there is a branch that sticks out and features a built-in single pose. The vines that cascade down the tree have tiny white lights that also glow. It is truly magical and you instantly feel like you have been swept up into some

Creamshop is mostly known for awesome clothing but, lurking around the sim, you will find a very unique range of furniture. I was strolling along thinking about rain boots when I caught sight of one of the most impressive things I have seen on the grid. It’s called the record shelf and oh, my goodness, can you say “detailing?” It’s extraordinary! The record sleeves are perfect and have actual avatars on the covers but, the thing that got me 49

so excited, was the ladder attached to the shelf to climb up for those just-out-of-reach records. I *adore* this detail! The record shelf also comes with poses for picture-taking opportunities.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with using indoor or outdoor furniture wherever it works for you – inside or out! Your SL should be what you want it to be, so have fun with the changing seasons!

While at Creamshop, check out the deer if you want something that will get your friends talking. The deer is extremely realistic and is packed with poses so you and your friends can hop on! I love the quirkiness of this item. The deer could easily be outdoors in your garden or indoor sitting next your sofa. Creamshop offers lights, rugs, chairs, picture frames and more. Everything is made to perfection!

MUSIC SECOND LIFE® MUSIC GETS LOOPY

INSIDE SL’S BURGEONING LIVE LOOPING SCENE Live music in Second Life comes in no less variety than music from any other reality but for most performers, there are limitations in SL or in their personal lives that restrict them to solo performances. For many, a single instrument such as a guitar or keyboard along with their voice is enough. Some musicians who need more polyphony to express themselves choose to use backing tracks in the form of pre-recorded music to accompany the live portion of their performance. This sounds great and works well but, even though the artist has created the tracks themselves, it will always lack the raw spontaneity of an all-live performance. For this reason, a growing number of SL musicians are finding the use of “live looping” to be a great compromise. By Jura Shepherd

Live looping is a method of recording music phrases and instantly playing them back as a repeating track or layer. Additional layers are then added to create rich sounds and sophisticated grooves that wouldn’t be possible from a musician streaming a single instrument track. Live looping differs from traditional backing tracks, where an artist pre-records audio tracks, such as drums or bass, and then plays them back as support. Live looping tracks are created at the time of performance allowing for a more organic experience and subtle differences from show to show. Another key benefit is that it gives the artist the freedom to improvise on the fly. As outspoken SL performer Blindboy Gumbo says, “everything is done live in (your) face, so if I screw up, I just play with that.”

was threaded on two tape machines, one recording the audio on to the tape and the other playing it back after some delay and building continuously. This basic principle, utilizing WW2 technology, would carry audio “looping” for decades with gradual improvements in convenience and sound quality. Use of the technology by musicians Brian Eno and Robert Fripp in the 1970s would bring it into the mainstream and eventually usher in the age of digital looping. The move from the analog and quasi-mechanical tape-based technology to digital would fast-forward live looping capable equipment from exotic studio-only gear, to more compact, user-friendly and affordable gear. For live performers that use live looping in their music in SL, this transition provides choices that suit their individual needs. Guitarists, needing a hands-free way to control the looped portion of their performance, will generally choose foot-controlled devices. Popular among the guitarist crowd is the Boss Loopstation series with its RC-20XL, and RC-50 models. Other musicians may

The technique is nothing new and it isn’t exclusive to performing in a virtual environment. The term “loop” came about because the early experimentation was done with magnetic audio recording tape that was cut to a fixed length and then each end spliced carefully to form a continuous loop. The loop 52

choose to live loop with software. The software such as Reason and Ableton can be controlled during live performance any number of ways. Popular electronic musician Doubledown Tandino chooses to control his software loopers via digital turntables. The wide variety of options means that each performer can create a set-up as unique as their style.

looking for ways to innovate in the same way. Great music from any reality is usually born of a group of artists who gather together and create a scene based on similar styles and situations. Live looping musicians in SL have an opportunity to do just that with a global group of talented innovators and could potentially influence music beyond our digital world.

The technology behind live looping gives artist more creative options, but the use of loopers is not a panacea and won’t magically make a musician better. Layers are recorded in real time and, even for experienced loopers, a loop in the wrong measure or key can quickly turn into a train wreck. Performing this way is multi-tasking to the extreme. In addition to playing their instrument, singing, or both, live loop musicians are also editors and engineers. Brad Reason puts it best when he says: “Being a looping musician takes talent, skill, experience, rhythm and timing, and a mind that can handle right-brain and left-brain tasks at the same time. Looping musicians combine math and science with intuition and emotion at the same time, live, when they perform. It’s an amazing skill, produces amazing sounds and shows.” It could be argued that something is lost since SL audiences are unable to see the wizardry in a live looping performance. As SL live looping guru Acidicloop Exonar explains: “I think in SL the technique is lost on the audience because they don’t see what I’m doing. So they might think a looped measure is a bit long and drawn out, when in reality I’m working 3 pedals to get this effect. It doesn’t bother me because I know the groove is what draws them more so than the technique.” It is a bit ironic that such a visually-oriented world fails to convey the complexity of what it takes to make a great live looping performance but, for that reason, SL could very well become an incubator for artists that will be innovators in the use of the technique. Although the wow-factor that sparks curious interest in a real world live performance is simply not there, the lack of it puts the focus on the music itself. For musicians in SL, the music, and how the artist connects to audiences, is and will always be crucial, regardless of the use of live looping or not. The draw for SL’s burgeoning live looping scene is that it encourages solo performers to expand their sound and experiment in front of audiences that are more receptive to new ideas. More importantly, it connects them to other performers from around the globe who are

ART STEAMPUNK ART

It is not by coincidence that this article is about Bryn Oh, a Toronto artist and painter. Together with Feathers Boa, Bryn’s art is currently featured at an art installment at ROLE Magazine headquarters on the Concetta sim. If you haven’t seen it yet, it is not too late. By Looker Lumet

56

Bryn Oh has only a few years’ experience on the grid, but she is well-known in the virtual world, for her steampunk builds. As a RL artist, Bryn creates in relaxing solitude when preparing for a show. Working on an exhibition for more than six months is not unusual. In SL the platform is more social and can even be interactive. While Bryn builds on her island Immersiva, she often has people dropping in and interpreting her work. These experiences are, for her, far more interesting than after a work is completed.

ing certain builds. Connecting to Caerleon was one such turning point. Georg is the mastermind behind both the old Caerleon Island, in many ways an artists’ colony, and New Caerleon, which is more of an educational sim and an open source university. When you discover a new artist everybody wants to know what the artist has created and how they evolved in the virtual world. For a virtual artist with a background as an RL painter, I can imagine what wonderful things one would be inspired to build in the metaverse when an artist discovers the limitless possibilities which exceed RL limits.

Georg Yannick, (aka Gary Zabel), professor of philosophy at the University of Massachusetts at Boston, was the first person in Second Life to offer Bryn Oh land to build on. Every artist in SL has a few “turning point” moments which changes them. For her the turning points came from meeting certain people, creating certain builds and even see-

The strongest conceptual work of Bryn is, without a doubt “Condos in Heaven.” It is a build based off of a poem she also authored inspired by an event she read about in a newspaper.

Condos in Heaven An astrobot with fame Sent the probes away Now the newspapers proclaim “We found Heaven today!” Hadraniel stood at the gates to Heaven Raining death for six days Upon all until day seven When they brought out the heat rays I watched it unfold on the internet Beautiful Cassiel with golden hair He was captured and sold as a pet To a wealthy billionaire The war is done the Condominiums rise What resources are there to consume Sariel appears with tears in his eyes At the window to my bedroom (Bryn Oh)

57

58

59

In Bryn’s own words, “We will, in our quest to consume, destroy endangered animal habitats for oil and do a million other destructive things to our environment. I wondered what our boundaries were. What might stop us? What is off-limits? Would Heaven be sacred or is it the new frontier? If we advance technologically to the point where Heaven’s miracles are within our ability to achieve, would that diminish Heaven in our eyes and thus allow us to see it as something to conquer? Would Satan be out of necessity aid? Heaven against a common threat? They are all fun questions for me to ponder.”

telling a chapter of a broader story about a futuristic world invaded by robotic creatures. She deals with issues of identity, belief, consumption, myth and love. Bryn creates other worlds of mist and shadow.

“Condos in Heaven” explores what might happen should the human race find a physical way to reach Heaven. What would we do? In her build, the human race goes to war with Heaven for its resources. We conquer it and put up condos for the wealthy. We capture and sell angels for pets. We wear their wings and halos as status symbols. The build itself tells a whole story about what happened along with accompanying newspapers and advertising pieces. It encourages the viewers to actively search for clues about the story and let’s them interpret what they see.

Some artists work with concepts when they create. Dada, Art Deco, Cubism, Fluxus are all examples. Some are ongoing such as Post Modernism and Neo Pop. For Bryn, she is working under Immersiva. The idea being to essentially create a painting you can “hook up to” and enter. Something that will immerse you to a degree that you forget the real world and enter a virtual one that is more immediate. Bryn believes Second Life is a great medium for this experience and she is striving to realize the concept of Immersiva.

After seeing the installation currently on display at the ROLE Magazine Headquarters, we can confirm what all have been saying of the artistry of Bryn Oh. Bryn is an exceptional talent and she creates exceptional art. Her original work can be found all over the grid, and we are glad to see that RL artists have found a way to realize their creations in the virtual world.

Most of Bryn Oh’s builds are connected to her real life in some way. They are not literal translations but a form of online diary. The builds incorporate poems which reflect in some way her life, her dreams and her fears. “Bryn’s faceless, metal bodies often hold more energy than the avatars of her audience, but while the surface is lovely to see, and the subject matter might skirt the edges of the obvious, there is more than meets the eye. These works are almost all presented as cyphers, vessels with secret compartments containing clues with evocations, which open more secret doors. Spend a moment exploring and you will find hidden buttons that play sounds, poems that include clues which lead you on a hunt for more clues and works hidden within works,” according to Tezcatlipoca Bisiani, the University of Kentucky’s first Virtual Curator in Residence. Immersiva Immersiva (36/108/20)

As described by Meta Looming on her Cyberloom blog, Bryn is one of the most prolific and admired artists in SL for her creativity and depth. Her work is whimsical, melancholic and sometimes dark, usually

LITERARY CALEDON LIBRARY

SERVING THE COMMUNITY, PRESERVING THE CULTURE The Independent State of Caledon is one of the role playing Victorian-themed groups spanning 45 sims in Second Life®. According to the official Caledon wiki Caledon is a rapidly growing micro nation with its own culture and history. Libraries have often taken on the role of preserver and distributor of history and culture within communities and Caledon’s library system does that and more. Founded by Mr. JJ Drinkwater, who also serves as Caledon Librarian, the Caledon Library consists of 11 branches scattered throughout Caledon. The Caledon Library’s website, The Library Militant works to keep residents informed of events and new acquisitions in the library. By Verde Otaared

The Main Library, the Whitehorn Memorial, is located in the capitol city of Caledon, the Caledon VictoriaCity sim. The Caledon Reading Room is a few steps from the VictoriaCity Telehub, and is easily identified by its distinctive cruciform copper dome.

Events Libraries have never been just about the books though and the Caledon Library is no exception. The library hosts monthly book discussions, and presents exhibits of art, literature, and a variety of sundry, cultural interests. Currently on display is “The Past Re-imagined: Victorian Fashion and the Designs of Eladrienne Laval” in the Whitehorn Memorial Library, Caledon VictoriaCity. According to a notecard describing the exhibit: “This exhibit explores Miss Laval’s creations from source image though design and construction, and places them in the context of her inspirations from Victorian Fashion. A section of the exhibit looks at one of Miss Laval’s favorite designers, Charles Frederick Worth, the father of haut [sic] couture. Caledon Library curator Siri Woodget has collaborated with Miss Laval to supplement the exhibit with materials on one of Worth’s famous patrons, Isabella Stewart Gardner.” With the Clan of Seafarers and Storytellers, it co-sponsors story-telling sessions at a local pub. It also publishes, on its own and with the Caledon Tesla Society, works of scientific and technical interest.

Collections When most people think of libraries, books immediately come to mind, whether in SL or real life. The libraries of Caledon do have books available for visitors to read in the library or to take with them. Many of the books are classic 19th century novels, research materials about the 19th century, and important Steampunk books. Books are available as physical objects and notecard. In addition, there are some audio books as well for in world listening. Perhaps the most interesting collection in the Caledon Library however is the “Local Authors” collection which provides works written by Caledon residents. The local collection contains nearly thirty stories, essays and poem by Caledonians. There is a poem titled “Caledon My Home” by Qlippothic Projects, a story poem “Mighty Caledon” by Junie Ginsburg and a story “The Push of Man” by ZenMondo Wormser. The “Local Authors” collection has the potential to be much larger than it is, but is in need of a curator to attend to it and help it grow,” says Drinkwater.

A Caledon resident created the steam-powered library catalogue which patrons use to perfuse the collections. The Caledon community and its library form a wonderful symbiosis, each helping the others’ growth and development. A description of this synergy has been described in a recently published book, “Virtual Worlds, Real Libraries” in the chapter: Virtual neighborhoods, real communities: the Caledon Branch Library and the Branch Library Program by J.J. “In short, community feeling runs very high in Caledon. Moreover, as per its narrative, Caledon prides itself on being the most civil of civil societies, home to all of what the 18th and 19th centuries knew as the “polite accomplishments,” as well as a lively interest in the arts and sciences. It is no surprise, then, that Caledon’s attitude towards its library is extraordinarily supportive—as well as proprietary, generous, genteelly critical, and not a little self-satisfied. Residents regularly volunteer to create items for the collections and are invariably flattered to be asked to donate items for the archives, give talks, and create exhibits.”

TRAVEL GUIDE INSILICO

The latest news is that the South Zone of INSILICO has opened. If you don’t mind being tainted by the rumors of that corporation’s dealings, Tokuma Towers has four skyscrapers boasting magnificent penthouses and three styles of apartments served by elevators. Rent starts at $L370/week to $L440/week for 50 prims (150 prim minimum). You can tell this is a nicer district than, say, the Western zone. The Western sim is a junkyard, low-rent area (according to architect Skills Hak) where a proposed bunker will be built in due time. What’s truly striking is how dense the whole place is. Apartments are everywhere but you don’t readily see them, optimizing privacy for residents while giving the whole city a pronounced “lived-in” vibe. You feel eyes watching you and you sense the furtive movements in the myriad dark corners. The canyons created by the many tall structures cause you to feel humble and sense that staying hidden is probably a good idea. By Paypabak Writer

Out of the shadows looms a D & D Gear Drone. Who knows the last time it was used? Walking further along, Ali and I came across Zachh Cale’s Project Z Gallery with wonderful 3D artwork you can literally walk into, such as the amazing “Flesh & Blood” by Feathers Boa (see ROLE Magazine’s March issue, page 54), part of her “future antiques” project. Passing through the gallery, we stepped into the multi-storied atrium of an apartment building. We figured out how to use the very smoothly functioning elevator and stopped at various floors. Angling my camera, I caught some magnificent views of the two 14th floor penthouse apartments.

INSILICO has that effect When you push beyond the sometimes lag-cursed mall, with the videos and scripts, this cyber-noir-ish Gotham is awesome! Let’s not knock the mall -- it is the core from which the now four-sim INSILICO build has evolved. From its second month in existence, the stores and apartment rentals have made it possible for Skills Hak to pretty much kick the crap out of her boredom and inspire SL Things to Do’s Jenn Heinrichs to write: “Cyberpunk Cityscape in the Sky, INSILICO, offers three of the most amazing sim builds I’ve come across in quite a while.” Or Alpha Auer, writing for NPIRL to wax poetic about how “Skills Hak achieves narrative not through a single spatial metaphor but rather through a carefully orchestrated range of visual and audio elements, that converge to create an extraordinary feeling of the very concept of “city”--of urban density, of doom, of pollution, of claustrophobia.” In talking to residents involved in developing the role-playing aspect of the sim, I heard Auer’s sense of the “pull of INSILICO” described by one Perri: “You come here, you love here, you want to live here, and then you want to help ‘here’ be even better.” It seeps

We then approached the huge Cathedral of Atonement. Featuring neon baby Jesus and Madonna glowing skulls as part of the architecture I caught a Stranger in a Strange Land vibe. Especially when I saw a small balcony above the altar with control panels and the ceiling filled with speakers. A much larger balcony held a dance floor and what appeared to be a baptismal bar. My partner-in-crime Ali muttered something about possibly becoming a “dark preacher.” I was left to wonder, “What in hell did that mean?” 66

67

into you with every incredible view, the iron butterfly of a city 3,600 meters above the Second Life grid.

Diner in this sector is a perfect icon for this theme. In the main sim, above the mall, are small clubs, the most notorious being the Blue Ant Club (a reference to William Gibson’s Pattern Recognition) where the SL glitterati are known to frequent.

The stores enhance and encourage you to act out and play along with the INSILICO story. INSILICO is related to the cyberpunk Mangas such as Apple Seed and Ghost in the Shell and computer games like Bureau 13, Dreamweb, Syndicate and Omikron: The Nomad Soul (all referenced by Skills during interviews, please don’t credit me with having any authority in this!). When you can put together such a superb setting and imaginative, sexy costuming, how can you not follow through with role-playing?

The 7 Seas Restaurant is flagrantly creative with its outdoor blue dragon sculpture and the Underthe-Sea interior design that sports jellyfish and a whirling school of mackerel overhead. Beautiful mermaids will appear on your table if you’re there long enough. Eight apartments are also part of the structure but good luck getting in!

The role-playing aspects of INSILICO were being addressed even as I talked with Skills and partner Cinndreia Messmer during a tour of the sim. Here is a brief rundown of the four main INSILICO factions currently under consideration:

The richness of detail is potent. The lights of hover cars glide like ghosts across the sky while more cumbersome transports hang above corporate HQs. In a two-day demonstration of building acumen, Hak created the Yang Tower, an impressive 256 meters tall with an incredibly smooth elevator ride to the swank, multi-floor penthouse.

The Corporations represent the gods of INSILICO and power trickles down from these movers and shakers through the sub factions of banking, INSILICO private security, corporate workers, couriers, spies, and maintenance workers.

And so I find myself returning to INSILICO. The Pris skin has given way to a silver gynoid skin, and the Mangaesque shirt and snakeskin jeans have been replaced with purple latex, with zippers everywhere, and Revolver Stomp boots. My Venom 45s are strapped to my thighs. The skeleton cross above the architrave of the cathedral haunts me. I awake on a couch across from the blazing sign above the bar: ATONEMENT. Feeling the warmth of my friend, Ali the dark preacher laying next to me, I recall dreams of electric sheep.

The Syndicates manifests the corruption that serves to get things done: drug-running, smuggling, dealing in the black market, and entertainment (exotic dancing and cage fighting guilds are examples). The Underground has been driven to desperate measures and forms groups whose goal is to take back the city from the powerful. The Mercenaries provide “dirty deeds done cheap.” Loyalties are constantly shifting among these bounty hunters and former employees of Corporations and Syndicate turncoats. Individual mercenary groups are still forming, with only one formally recognized: the Suicide Queens.

ALTERNATIVE VIEWERS RESIDENTS GET IT RIGHT!

Second Life® is a richly diverse virtual world consisting of a vast myriad of residents who have molded it into what it is today. It is a world full of limitless creative opportunities, where thinking outside of the box is a way of life. So, it makes perfect sense that the residents of SL should not be limited by the standard SL viewer and should have the option to live their virtual lives through the use of alternative viewers developed by the very residents who inhabit it. By Stacie Pryor

Ask most residents of SL, and they will tell you that the standard Second Life viewer lacks the functionality it should be exhibiting. Personally, I am always so amused by the opportunity to complete the Resident Survey which is occasionally offered at the login screen. If you are like me and feel compelled to answer “My experience is getting WORSE!” followed by a full paragraph of complaints, then you know exactly what I am talking about here. Thankfully, we have options. And, luckily, you don’t have to be a tech genius to figure them out! Trust me: if I can do it, you can do it.

to add functionality or fix bugs, patch contributors are severely inhibited by the Quality Assurance procedure, which proves so burdensome that any sort of change is ultimately discouraged. Not to mention the fact that large numbers of users remain resistant to change and wish for the viewer to remain constant and familiar. When all of these issues are added together, the end result is a viewer which changes gradually and cautiously over an extended period of time, lacking significant improvements in stability and functionality from one update to the next. One of the most popular alternative viewers is IMPRUDENCE. Imprudence is an open-source viewer project based on the standard viewer source. However, it has quite a different goal than some of the other available viewers. Imprudence focuses on greatly improving the usability of the viewer rather than improving stability or adding bug fixes. Incorporating “community involvement, thoughtful design, modern development methods, and a pro-change atmosphere,” Imprudence effectively improves “approachability, comfort and ease of use, efficiency, speed and ease of common tasks and workflows, satisfaction, and the emotional effect of the software on the user.”

Considering the amazing amounts of creativity and technical savvy in SL, it is no wonder that a handful of SL residents have taken it upon themselves to provide more user-friendly viewers for the masses. The reasons for doing so are numerous. The standard viewer is plagued by a multitude of stability and performance problems. With the increasingly ridiculous number of crashes we all experience, the standard viewer is quite often far too unreliable for any practical use. The interface is cluttered and tends to be confusing for both new and experienced users. Plus, it consists of crude tools which make efficiency impossible and work processes awkward.

Spearheaded by team leader Jacek Antonelli, Imprudence utilizes an interface which is noticeably different from the standard viewer. The most noticeable difference is the use of completely different fonts, which are honestly much more legible than the fonts utilized

Additionally, Linden Lab seems to lack the resources necessary to invest in making significant improvements to the standard viewer. Even though the standard viewer has been released as an open-source project since 2007, and anyone can modify its code 70

in the standard viewer. Chat also appears differently, with local chat being detached from the traditional IM window, allowing you to view your chat history separately from IMs.

developed by Boy Lane, based on the Linux version developed by Henri Beauchamp. Unlike Imprudence, which was developed independently of the SL viewer, the Cool SL Viewer is an improved version of the official SL viewer from Linden Lab. It combines the best features of the Nicholaz Viewer (now discontinued), adding the innovative features of RestrainedLife (which we’ll discuss below) along with bug fixes and new features which users of the standard SL viewer will be waiting months to see implemented.

From my experience, Imprudence runs smoothly, with few hiccups in the flow of movement and much less noticeable lag. And textures load incredibly fast, providing quite a noticeable difference from the slow load-rate evident in the standard viewer. Also, one of my favorite features of Imprudence is the addition of a WORN tab in the Inventory window. The WORN tab, to the right of the usual INVENTORY and RECENT ITEMS tabs, compiles all currently worn items into a single tab where residents can easily see exactly which items are attached to their avatars. Since I am a fashion blogger, this feature is exceptionally handy, making it simple for me to create a style sheet for each outfit.

Like Imprudence, the Cool SL Viewer runs very smoothly, has a fast texture load-rate, and implements the usefulness of the highly-acclaimed WORN tab in the Inventory window. A unique feature is that it allows you to connect to all existing grids from the login screen. So, instead of logging into SL’s Main Grid, you could choose to log in to OpenSim or the Beta Grid, among others. Additionally, a useful patch allows you to teleport and build at altitudes over 768 meters.

Another interesting new feature is the RESTORE TO LAST POSITION option available in the Inventory window. This feature is especially helpful for the editchallenged residents of SL, which definitely includes me. To utilize this feature, simply right-click on any item in inventory, and you will see the RESTORE TO LAST POSITION option at the bottom of the rightclick menu. So, if a resident is editing an item, such as a necklace, and he or she accidentally moves it to a new position where it cannot be seen or found, it can easily be restored to its previous position without losing it forever or permanently altering its location.

One of the most useful features of the Cool SL Viewer is that it allows for bulk-editing of permissions. So, instead of being forced to painstakingly edit permissions one item at a time, the bulk-edit feature allows residents to edit permission in bulk, saving lots of time and effort. Also, another unique feature to the Cool SL Viewer is that it enables residents to build flexible sculpties. The addition of flexible sculpties to SL allows content creators to revolutionize the way items are built, resulting in new flexible and freely-moving prims.

One of the best features of Imprudence is that its developers are not afraid of change. Imprudence is an open-source, volunteer effort and depends greatly on community involvement in order to affect change quickly and efficiently. There are many ways to become involved, regardless of skill set or level of commitment. In fact, many kinds of contributions are welcome, and most of them do not even require any programming skills or special knowledge. So, any residents who have some free time, and are considering becoming involved in a great project, are strongly urged to donate their time and resources to Imprudence.

The Cool SL Viewer implements an optional patch, contributed by Marine Kelley, which can be enabled through DeBug Settings, allowing the viewer to function as a RESTRAINEDLIFE Viewer. Quite possibly the most unique, alternative viewer available, RestrainedLife implements less functionality than the standard SL viewer. Developed out of a sense of necessity for the BDSM and role-play communities, the RestrainedLife Viewer enables residents to participate in dominant and subordinate relationships in a truer form by allowing the more dominant participants to physically restrain their subordinate counterparts. If the subordinate participants use the RestrainedLife Viewer, their dominant partners can render ordinarily detachable items as LOCKED, preventing their removal. Additionally, unique functions can be acti-

Aside from Imprudence, another extremely popular alternative viewer is the COOL SL VIEWER. Since I am a Windows user, I have been utilizing the Cool SL Viewer 72

vated in order to prevent the user from engaging in speech, hearing, sending and receiving IMs, teleporting, and sit-teleporting beyond a short distance. For these reasons and more, the RestrainedLife Viewer is a welcome addition to the BDSM and role-play communities, greatly enhancing their experiences.

Simply put, alternative viewers can offer a much-welcomed vacation from the stale lack of functionality of the standard SL viewer. These viewers are just another example of what the residents of SL are doing right!

GADGETS & “KNOW HOW” BUILD A BETTER PRIM…

Build a better prim and the world (even a virtual one) will beat a path to your door! Well, I am not sure about the “beating a path” part, but “building a better prim,” now there is an idea! Spring is in the air, hopefully. And, just like in real life, spring means renewal. For some, that means a new wardrobe. For others, it means redoing the yard or time for a new house. So, I have some help for all the guys who have been hearing those time-honored words from their loved ones, “Honey? I want a new house, but I cannot find anything that I really love.” By Aldwyn Zansibar

As you already know, most guys hate shopping. As much as we love our partners, being dragged around from home builder to home builder to look at all the demo models is sort of like having a root canal. But we do it anyway -- because we love you.

building tool created by resident Skidz Tweak. Skidz takes a standard SL prim and supercharges it in such a way that building becomes not only easier, but fun, too! If you’re an experienced builder, don’t just skip the rest of this article -- hear me out, please!

Now guys, listen up! (Ok…ladies…you can listen too! Anyone who builds, or wants to learn to build, will find this information useful.)

I have had several discussions with long-time builders -- what they do, in all honesty, amazes me. Talented builders often assemble prims mathematically using viewer positioning features. To these builders I give full credit for building the classic way. Please don’t misunderstand and think I am saying that building this way is not the right way. Just consider that there are building tools to help augment, and perhaps simplify, your current building style.

It seems that for everyone there comes a time during our virtual existence when buying the latest thing becomes (shall I say it?) boring. If we want something new or unique sometimes we realize it might finally be time to learn to build. For this column we are going to take a look at a fabulous tool that will help you make things more easily and efficiently in-world.

How could the Skidz Primz tool help even the experienced builders? By making many of the mundane and non-intuitive aspects of building in SL easier. What Skidz Primz allows you to do, in a nutshell, is build using a “point and click” interface. What do I mean by that? Let me give you an example:

Building in Second Life is really not that hard, but it is time consuming. As in real life, a builder needs to have a vision before starting to organize and assemble prims. If you are like me, you may start with a vision or an idea but, as you begin to build, you change your mind, or find that things don’t quite turn out the way you thought they would.

Let’s say you have two prims that you wish to align together. For those of you reading this article inworld, go ahead and rez two prims. Click on one of the prims and choose edit. Note the three arrows indicating the X, Y, and Z axis. The point where all three axes connect is the center of the prim. This center position is the point that all positioning is based

This is when building tools come in handy. The tool that I use for just about every building project I have worked on, both large and small, is the Skidz Primz 74

upon. So to align two prims, you calculate where the center point of the first prim is in order to align it in relation to the second prim. There are formulas to calculate the alignment manually if you choose.

spaces in a build such as for doors or windows. Let’s say you are building your dream house and you want a door in a certain wall. You’ll need to create a gap in the wall for a door to fill. Without a building tool you would need to calculate the distance between the prims on either side of the gap, subtract 1/2 the width of each of those prims to get the edge points of the gap, which would then be the size of the gap. With Skidz, you simply touch the prim on one side of the gap, then the prim on the other side, then click on the Skidz prim in the middle. You will then be prompted to answer which axis you want to stretch to fill the gap, and you automatically have a prim that fills the gap. You will then be asked if you want to snap this new prim into place. Don’t you just love it when your tools ask you questions?

For those of us who instead say, “I want this prim to connect to a certain point on another prim without working through the manual formula. I want it to magically happen!” Skidz Primz can do this for you. The Skidz Primz tool supplies you with scripted building prims that essentially rezzes pins on all the valid connection points every prim. The “Snap Mode” is sort of like connect the dots and allows the builder to connect “this pin to that pin” in a way that is so simple it’s almost scary. When using this building tool, I feel like I am conducting a symphony orchestra, waving my baton, and watching the prims magically line up exactly where I want them.

Now, if that isn’t enough information to get you rethinking how you currently build, this tool has yet another invaluable feature. Are you ever frustrated with not knowing which side of a prim will be altered

The “Gap Mode” function helps the builder create 75

prims and they will auto-magically become Skidz Primz. Dropping this script into your build will not affect any scripts already in your prims. The Skidz Primz textures will not appear if you have already textured the prims with something else.

Skidz has textures on each side of a prim. The textures show how the prim will change when applying the standard modifications to it such as cutting. So instead of guessing how the prim is affected by your modification, the change is laid out for you, plain as day. Talk about a time saver!

As with any new tool, and as easy as I found Skidz Primz to learn and use, it does take a little bit of practice to master the new options. To help with the learning curve, Skidz Primz offers a website with several helpful videos to teach you how to take advantage of their prim enhancements.

The textures on Skidz Primz assign each side (or face) of the prim a number. You can simply assign each face a texture by using the “select texture” in the edit menu of the prim or drag a texture directly onto the prim. But, what if you want to have multiple textures in your scripted build that allows the end-user to choose their preferred texture? For that to work you’ll need to ensure the prims in your build are all facing the same direction! In other words, all of your interior walls of a house should be side 1 of a prim (for example), so your texture-changer script will change the texture on all the same sides -- not half inside and half outside.

By the way, all of these great tools are an extension of the tools available to builders in-world. This means that even if you are the ultimate perfectionist and still love to make your final adjustments by hand (doing the math), you will still gain a lot of valuable time by using Skidz Primz in the early stages of your projects. You can build concept items quickly to see if your idea will work without taking up a lot of time. Time is the one thing we can never get back!

Other information included on Skidz textures is the axis of the prim. As you know by now, each prim has an X, Y, and Z axis, which indicates position and size. You alter prim size by increasing or decreasing numbers on the X, Y, and Z axes. In the previous explanation of the gap mode feature we discuss that the Skidz Primz tool will ask which axis you want to stretch to fill a gap - the textures on the Skidz prim will show you.

I will issue a couple of warnings. Skidz Primz works because of scripts. If you are building in a laggy sim many of these wonderful features will not work as fast as you might like. I have tested Skidz Primz in a few full and laggy sandboxes and, although I noticed the lag, I was still able to function and build pretty darned fast. In addition, the pins used in the “Snap Mode” interface are prims. This means they count against the prim allotment on the land you are building on, so make sure you have plenty of prim allowance before you start to build. Enjoy your spring!

Speaking of textures, Skidz Primz has a built-in “Texture Replacement” tool. With this function you can see all of the textures in your build and replace them by dragging a new texture onto the HUD instead of having to select each prim in your build. For all of you who are now screaming at your computer screen, “Why didn’t you tell me this before I started to build my house/dungeon/castle/skybox/ whatever?” Stop yelling and breathe! Although it is always easier to start with the right tool, even if you have already started a build it is very easy to let Skidz Primz help you finish your project on time, and hopefully, under budget.
