Shape your su RSU is a democratic organisation, but let us tell you what that means for you! It means we base all of our decisions on the feedback you give, it means you set the direction of your Union and, most importantly, it means that if you have an idea, there are lots of ways to let us know!

/ YOUR OFFICER TEAM One of the easiest ways to voice your opinion is to start up a conversation with a member of your RSU Officer team. The RSU President, Vice President Education and Vice President Community & Welfare are elected students who are working to help you make Roehampton the best place it can be for every student. They work alongside a team of 24 current students who are elected across different positions. Let them know what’s going on and how they can support you, follow them on our social media and pop into the office to say hi! / VOTE The Officer team are elected each year by the students, it’s really quick and easy and you willl definitely know when it’s going on. Look out for all our elections promotion in February and March to see who’s put themselves forward for positions (it could be you!) and to make sure you vote. They put forward manifestos and pledges and you vote for whoever puts forward the ideas you want to see implemented the most. We also hold votes throughout the year on issues that you raise, so if you want us to hold a vote on something close to your heart, let us know. / ideas Student ideas are one of the main ways we know what is important to you, and what we should be working on. If you have an idea about RSU, or the University, then pop it on our ideas page roehamptonstudent.com/ideas / pop in and see us Come and visit us in the RSU offices, based in Froebel campus, to talk to an officer or staff member. You will often see us out and about round campus, so feel free to stop for a chat! roehamptonstudent.com/whoweare 11

/ Programme reps

A voice for your classmates

Programme reps For every subject taught at Roehampton, there is the opportunity to become a Programme Rep, all of whom play a vital role in representing the views of your fellow coursemates to both academic and Union staff. Department reps Department Reps are just like Programme Reps, but represent everyone within a department instead of just a programme of study. A variety of major decisions are made at department level and having your views represented is vital.

WHAT WOULD I DO ? The role of Reps is to represent the views of students to academics and administrators within the University of Roehampton. As a Rep, you can suggest changes to programmes of study based on students’ feedback. Our role at RSU is to fully support those of you who want to become a rep by offering training before you take up the role and support throughout the year – as well as a nice hoodie! WHY BE A REP?

BECOMING A REP Simply let your lecturer know that you are interested, say a few words to your class mates about why you are the best candidate to represent them, and they will vote for who they think is the best fit to represent them. If you have any questions about being a rep, pop in or email us at studentvoice@roehampton.ac.uk or chat to your Department Rep!

16

You get to directly shape the student experience whilst developing key transferable skills that look great on a CV! You also get to be that cool person who helps others on your course get the most out of their university experience.

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?

Roehampton offers lots of opportunities for you to enjoy student life away from the textbooks. We like to think that we have something for everyone - and if we don’t we can help you to develop new activities that you’re passionate about. All our societies are run by student committees who volunteer to bring these activities to you. They are open to all students, whether you live on or off campus or have just begun university or are in your final year.

Through societies, campaign and peer support groups, the RSU empowers students to make change in their communities. All of these groups are run by students alongside their studies and provide you with a wide array of opportunities to learn new skills, meet new people and have fun. It’s an experience not to be missed, and one of the most exciting and memorable parts of your university experience.

• Look through our Societies Website – what are you interested in? • Fresher’s Fair – Join up to try as many different societies as possible. University is a great chance to try something completely different, so always push yourself and try something completely new or crazy. You never know – you may love it! • Go along to as many different introduction events as possible – your first two weeks are for you to try out as many different experiences as possible, and meet lots of people. You can then decide what societies you are going to join later on. • Send a message to the society and express interest – all our societies are welcoming to new students, and will usually meet with you beforehand so you don’t have to go in on your own. • Ask your lecturers what academic societies are available – many departments have a society linked to them who organise socials, activities and talks. It’s a great way to learn more about your subject and get to know your course mates better. • Bring your equipment with you! Think you want to join the Music Society? Then bring your instrument! Want to take part in ballet? Then bring your pointe shoes!

• Missed out on Fresher’s Fair in September? Don’t worry, you can join societies any time of the year, or pop along to our Re-Fresher’s Fair in January. • Can’t find what you’re interested in? Think we are missing a trick? Then set up a society yourself! Just pop into the RSU for a chat, and we can see if we can support you in making things happen!

/ What We Are About Growhampton is a sustainability initiative with a big focus on food growing. It was established in 2013 and was initially funded by the NUS Student Green Fund. Growhampton is delivered by Roehampton Students’ Union in partnership with the University of Roehampton. / On Your Doorstep

We have our own CHICKENS on campus.

We run The Hive Café, where you can grab a great coffee and lunch and socialise or study. We have loads of events going on and volunteering opportunities for you to get involved with – try something new, make new friends and build employability skills for your CV!

“Although it’s easy to presume that a project titled Growhampton would be run by a group of ‘tree hugging hippies’, a misconception that I myself had, Growhampton is an environmental initiative that works towards building a sustainable campus while improving the student experience. Whilst the people at Growhampton may be trying to save the planet, it’s not through hugging trees. It’s through practical, creative and sustainable initiatives that have a positive impact on the campuses on which you will be studying. I’d encourage any of you who are considering getting involved with Growhampton to jump straight in; the staff are super friendly and it’s a great way to meet new people whilst you are helping to build a better Roehampton community, as well as taking active steps to improve your wellbeing. Or, even easier than that, just turn up and take part in one of our many fundraisers to play your part for local, national and international charities. 36

We host over 250 events each and every year. Over the summer we have been busy planning the schedule for the year ahead and we’re super excited. We have also created our new RSU Events brand. This splits our events roster into seven categories. Look out for our logo showing our official events and to get a taste of all that we can offer…

Conferences / Over the last three years, RSU Conferences have become a staple in our events calendar. The days aim to inspire and educate different groups of students with workshops and worldclass speakers. First up this year, look out for our annual BAME Leaders conference coming in November.

De-Stress / Lectures, coursework, revision, exams. Enough to stress anybody out. That’s why we run our De-Stress programme, where we aim to release some of the tension in the busy periods of university life. Look out for our on-campus spa days, learn-2-grow sessions and puppy rooms (yes that is a room full of puppies).

Trips / If you fancy a longer break from University life, our trips are just for you. We run weekends away to Europe’s best cities, along with longer breaks like our ski trip, for all the budding Shaun Whites out there.

/ Nightlife The nights out we offer play a big role in our events package. We run weekly and monthly club nights on and off-campus that will be sure to get you dancing the night away.

Monday / Monthly the Clapham Grand

WEDNESDAY / weekly FEZ CLUB

We take over Clapham Grand once a month on a Monday night, bringing you a classic club night in one of London’s hotspots. With around 1,100 Roehampton students attending each time, The Clapham Grand is one of our busiest and best nights. Cheap drinks, a huge dance floor and raised platforms are also thrown into the mix to ensure the night is one you’ll always remember. We will also provide free transport to and from The Grand every night out!

Without fail, each week Fez Club will be the much-needed mid-week release from any study stress you might have. Fez Club, Putney, often appears on ‘best clubs in London’ shortlists, making it one of our most popular events on our ever growing event calendar. Exclusively ours every Wednesday, you can party safe in mind that the club is filled with Roehampton students only. The DJ will take you through the night across an eclectic mix of club classics, R ‘n’ B, Hip Hop and, well pretty much anything you wish to request! And, of course, we will provide free transport to and from the venue.

Thursday / Weekly Thirsty thursdays They do say Thursdays are the new Fridays! Check out our Thirsty Thursday schedule online to see what is happening and when, but be sure not to miss our infamous Karaoke sessions with great prizes and your chance to grab those 15-minutes of fame you’ve always wanted. Thirsty Thursday is hosted on campus, 8 ‘til late, every Thursday in The Union Bar at Froebel College.

The Bop is part of Roehampton culture and by the time you’ve graduated, you will be in love with it and have more than one tale to tell about your nights at The Bop. It’s our biggest regular night on campus, every week on Fridays throughout the academic year. It’s a club night right on your doorstep, offering a different theme each week where you and your flat mates can go in fancy dress and have a great time doing so. Spread over two rooms, there is music for everyone’s tastes, from club classics to a huge slice of cheese to rock and indie anthems. The Bop will quickly find a prized place deep in your heart. 37

Colleges at Roehampton are the living and learning communities of its students and compete to earn points for various activities. Yep, just like Hogwarts.

Southlands Sharks

38

Whitelands Badgers

Home to the Sharks, Southlands is the smallest college on campus but only in numbers, not in spirit. They pride themselves on their strong sense of community and aim to bring the College Cup back to the home of the Sharks.

Badgers may look cute and innocent, but they’re really fierce creatures able to take on animals much larger than themselves. That spirit is found in Whitelands throughout, not just in College Cup events.

Froebel Zebras

Digby Stuart Lions

Froebel Zebras lie at the heart of campus, with the RSU offices and the Student’s Union Bar. They pride themselves on commitment and a determination that team work makes the dream work and they want to keep the title this year.

Digby Stuart is the biggest college of the four and have a roaring pride. A real familial attitude is found in all of Digby – as well the pride of lions. They narrowly lost out last year are determined to win back the cup this time round.

Want to win?

While you are at Roehampton, your triumphs and engagement will earn you college points. At the end of the year, the college with the most points will be awarded the College Cup!
