WELCOME

Guess what? It’s almost the end of the lecturing term. But do not cry – you still have Fresh to keep you company in those lonely Easter holidays! And Roehampton hasn’t shut down its cast iron gates just yet – oh no, there is still a summer of frivolity and fun to be had within these beautiful campuses. We can still look forward to the RSU elections, read pages 8&9 for a quick preview, ahem – exams, and, of course, the ever-infamous Summer Ball. But for now, take a break from your essay writing and let Laura give you an excuse to never diet again (page 7), read Jake’s interview with our very own Roehampton boxer, Dennis Oshijo (page 13) and read Hasan’s exclusive on the amazing queen of Korean Pop; BoA (pages 28&29). We’ve even packed in a couple of Easter projects for you, with Kate showing us how to customise a bag in Craft Corner (page 24) and Maxine telling us how to help end global hunger. Yes, global hunger (pages 10&11). Also – see below about how to get your writing published in Fresh. Happy Easter! Fresh Magazine needs you! We are planning to expand our range of content, so if you’ve ever fancied writing for Fresh, now is the time. We are looking for guest writers and are especially looking for people to contribute to the following future sections of the magazine: Book reviews//Creative writing//Craft//Cooking We want to invite any writers to contact our editors Holly or Emma. fad diets & exercise laura greenslade

In 2009, Dr Pierre Dukan established his eating plan that has become infamous. The Dukan diet cuts out staple food groups such as fats and carbohydrates through its four phases. However, while it sometimes provokes large weight loss initially, it also makes your metabolism slow down. As a result, it actually makes the body store fat rather than eliminating it. Not exactly what you want from a diet. The more recent OMG diet is perhaps even more controversial; advising users to drink lots of coffee, exercise on

We all have body hang-ups and insecurities and with media pressure pushing from all platforms, it can be hard to resist the quick fix of a fad diet or exercise regime. The reality of it is that the use of photo editing and manipulation blurs the line between what is real and what is generated. Of course, though, the desire to look like our favourite celebrity or the model portrayed in every media advertisement around is tempting. However, fad diets and crazy exercise regimes are not the answer. Laura Greenslade tells us the main ones to avoid...

an empty stomach and to skip breakfast. Doctors everywhere are NOT recommending the OMG diet, stating that it is dangerous and deprives the body of the energy it needs to function properly.

Susie, a personal trainer, explains: “Many people Moving on to crazy exercise get too caught up in the fun of regimes, Zumba has taken over exercise classes - particularly the fitness world in the last few dance classes - and are not years. It is a high-energy aerobic completing the moves accurately. dance choreography class that This can put strain on the joints combines elements of hip-hop, and muscles which can, in some salsa and belly dancing. Susie recommends taking beginners classes that have limited numbers so that you can have the attention of the instructor to ensure you are working out safely. Bikram or Hot Yoga, as is it sometimes known, was another HUGE fitness trend that caused controversy in the fitness world. Carried out in a specially designed room, participants practise yoga at temperatures reaching above 100 degrees. It is recommended that you do not drink water during the class in order to maximise productivity, which does not sound like the most sensible idea. Susie recommends: “taking time to practice conventional yoga, decide if it is a practice that works for you before trying any variations such as Bikram.” If you are still determined that Bikram is for you, then seek the advice of a doctor beforehand just to be safe. It is suggested that if you are overweight you should only ever aim to lose around 5-10% of your weight by reducing calorie intake; this calorie reduction should be no more than 500 a day less than your usual intake. We so often fall prey to thinking that we need to take drastic action in order for our bodies to adapt, but the truth is that it is often the small changes that have the biggest impact. Instead of cutting out foods completely or rushing into six work out sessions a week, we should be looking towards long-term goals of healthy, varied eating and exercise that gives us those all-important feel good endorphins, but that does not damage us in the process.

ELECTIONS Q&A: CLAIRE FITZSIMONS, VP WELFARE AND FORMER ELECTIONS CANDIDATE ANSWERS SOME FAQ'S ON RSU ELECTIONS FOR FRESH. Were you aware of SU's before joining Roehampton? No I wasn’t actually aware of student unions at all, I did understand the political power of students as a collective group, but I didn’t understand how that was harnessed or how to get involved not until I rocked up here.

How did you first get involved with the SU? During Freshers week back in 2008 when I started I noticed all these people running around wearing hoodies and thought, ‘I wonder what they are doing?’ I went to quite a strict school where you were not able to exercise your opinions or your ideas and I love helping out as much as I can, so when I saw these people running around I was like, ‘how do I do that too?’ Because they looked like they were having such a laugh. As soon as I came to university I saw it as a chance to do that and I just asked.

What position(s) did you run for and Why did you decide to go for it? I ran for Froebel College Social Secretary. I didn’t really understand how big of a deal the elections were and I ran against the captain of Froebel football team. His girlfriend at the time was running for the College president role, so they were like Mr and Mrs Froebel and I was this mouthy little fresher from Watford who didn’t really understand what she was getting herself into, but went for it anyway. if you have the right ideas and you appeal to enough people because you have listened to them and understand what they want from their student experience then go for it.

What kinds of things did you use in your campaign?

When I lived on Mount Clare as a fresher, no one really understood elections at all, so I just spoke to members of staff, the ones that could change things about the university. I noticed things around the university that needed to be improved and I genuinely thought I was the person for the job. I didn’t try and big myself up or promise things I couldn’t deliver on. I just saw issues and ways to change them.

What is the election period like for candidates?

I found it quite fun. I love talking and meeting new people, so that part of the election I like to do, however, it is a tiring process. Mount Clare Site rep was more stressful as there were more issues to deal with, I wanted to do the role justice, especially when you believe you are the best person for the job. The VP Welfare was SO stressful! There was a full-time paid job at stake that would give me the chance to sit at the cusp of an amazing organisation.

Did you achieve the goals you set out to?

When you are given a sabbatical role you sit on a lot of committee’s and given a lot of positional power; that is a huge responsibility as you are representing 8,000 students on a local, national and international level when it comes to National Student Union’s. Having the team from last year and with the guidance of Chris, the general manager and Gemma, the academic advisor and other members of staff, who are able to put my input into good use. I got to work with a lot of outside organisations like Succeed Foundations in order to tackle some student issues like anxiety, eating disorders and depression, so that was a real achievement. I feel like I am a good track. I can leave this role knowing I have done the best I can and given it my all.

How has your SU position furthered you in your job aspirations?

The RSU is its own charitable organisation and I have been studying Charity Management part-time, so I am looking to pursue a career in third sector management but also, in my twenties, I would like to stay in higher education as I can see where its helping me. For me I have always worked for a higher cause, I am not money motivated and I am very much motivated by people and I think working in the third sector or higher education provides that environment.

Dennis Oshijo JAKE FLEMING

At what point did you decide to dedicate yourself to boxing? In secondary school I used to play football, but I wasn’t very good. My Dad used to box in the army in Nigeria so he took me to my local boxing club, and I noticed I had a talent for it.

What do you remember about your first fight?

I was only 15 at the time and I fought someone who was older than me - he even had a kid - and I won. It was a totally new experience to me because I’d only done sparring before. I remember the guy came steaming in at me, but I managed to drop him. Then he got back up and it was an electronic bout with a lot of punches. When they called the decision out and said that I’d won, I jumped up in the air.

Then what happened? After winning nine or ten fights I had my first defeat, and that taught me more than the previous wins did. I thought ‘I never want to feel that feeling again’, and I must have watched the tape of me losing about 100 times. It was actually really close and it could have gone either way, but it means I’m prepared for anything now.

How do you motivate yourself after a defeat like that? I was straight back up in the gym the next day.

Are there different techniques you have to learn in professional boxing. Yeah, you have to slow down. I had quite a good amateur style in that I used to stand upright, throw straight shots and apply a lot of pressure. Movement-wise I wasn’t really there, but as a pro I’ve been working hard on it. My coach Harry Andrews has been great, and has helped me to slow down and keep to the centre of the ring. The fights are different as well. Now I’ll be fighting 40-year old journeymen, 35-year old tough guys, Eastern Europeans... in amateur you’re fighting boxers between the ages of 18 and 25.

How often do you train? Six days of the week. Also every day in the gym, and going out for runs in the morning and evening.

What other sacrifices have you made going into boxing? The social life, definitely! Also where I’m dropping weight I’m really prone to illness, so I have to make sure I eat my fruits and take my vitamins. I don’t drink, I don’t do drugs and I’ve never smoked a cigarette in my life. I’m 20 years old now and I’ve only been drunk twice, because it doesn’t really interest me. I’m on a mission.

What about University? How have you found combining studying and training? I’m only in Uni three days a week so I’ve found it a lot easier, and studying Sports Science has actually been beneficial. In fact, we were talking about exercise addiction in my sports psychology lecture, and I think I might have it. If I miss a training session I get really angry, and that’s one of the signs. I remember on New Year’s Eve when my cousin Kofi was down, and rather than partying we found the only 24-hour gym that was open. We were there sparring until about 1:30 in the morning.

How do you prepare yourself mentally for a fight? Usually I relax. I like listening to some reggae or going to the cinema with my friend, and just keeping everything very calm. Before my first fight I was really buzzing and excited, and in boxing they call that ‘nervous energy’, which is when your nerves leave you feeling a bit drained before the fight. So the best thing to do is relax, put your hood up as you go into the ring, and as soon as the bell goes you’re ready.

So what do students have to do if they want to follow you? Add me on Twitter (@d9dennis) and follow me on Instagram. I put loads of pictures up there of my training, so that’s the best thing to do to stay in contact. I’ll even take people’s numbers and offer them personal one-on-one training if they want to get fit or learn how to box.

JAKE FLEMING Start your engines! The 2013 F1 season is just a few weeks away, and with 2012 having been one of the most entertaining years in a very long time, the new campaign promises to be another belter. But what exactly will be the big talking points over the coming months? Lewis Hamilton’s move to Mercedes is sure to attract a lot of attention from fans and media alike. Having spent his racing career at McLaren, the Brit decided to head for new pastures and teamed up with Nico Rosberg to drive for the Silver Arrows. It’s a move that comes with plenty of risk, as the Mercedes car is unlikely to be competitive in comparison to the more illustrious cars on the grid. However, Hamilton is playing the long game and team principal Ross Brawn believes he will have a shot at the Championship in 2014. With him out of the picture, Sebastian Vettel has had a major obstacle removed from his bid to win a fourth consecutive title. His success is beginning to echo that of fellow countryman Michael Schumacher’s, but neutrals and non-Germans will be hoping, for variety’s sake, that Vettel’s relentless drive for accolades is halted this season. His major rival will probably be Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, who raced the wheels off of his car last season despite it being behind the Red Bull in terms of performance. An improvement from the Scuderia would give him a huge opportunity to snatch a third World Championship. Another contender will be Jenson Button, who will now lead the McLaren team following the departure of Hamilton. Although the team had the best package at the start of last season, a lack of reliability and some pit-stop blunders

F1 prevented them from capitalising on their advantage. No doubt Ron Dennis will be making it crystal clear to his staff that this cannot happen again, and with Button in a more prominent role it does make the prospect of a second world title realistic. The Brit will be joined by Sergio Perez, who impressed with midfielders Sauber and will be looking for his first race victory in 2013. Finally, we should never write off Kimi Raikkonen. A man of few words but huge talent, Raikkonen took third place in the Championship last year and drove with mature consistency for the entire campaign. Lotus has fast become everyone’s favourite team, with the unforgettable and iconic victory last season at Abu Dhabi (In which Raikkonen barked over the team radio “Leave me alone, I know what I’m doing”) only endearing them further in the hearts of the fans. If the Finn was to win the title, it would certainly be a popular one. Of course, there are so many other narratives that will play out across the season: How will British newcomer Max Chilton fare? Will Romain Grosjean remain a crash kid? Does Bernie Ecclestone know what he’s doing? Perhaps we’ll know more come the first race on March 17th.

Need a moment of calm in your busy studious life? Vera Sugar explains how the Royal Academy of Arts' Manet exhibition can sooth your soul, whilst also providing you with a little of the history behind this radical impressionist. When I get tired, I like to drift off into the world of those who can draw. Why? Well, for starters, I can’t. I’m terrible enough not to draw five fingers on a hand; I’ll just draw a thick line. But great artists of past times always have something to show, some food for the brain, a switch off button for the mind. And if you like to feed your brain in a similar manner, I have a recommendation for you. This particular Royal Academy MAGAZINE of16 ArtsFRESH exhibition: Manet:

His paintings were continuously rejected by the Paris Salon, the prestigious exhibition held by the Academy of Fine Arts of France. This was the highest aim for most contemporaries, but impressionism had a long, rocky road before it could make its’ mark on the exhibition’s history. Manet did not get accepted to the Salon until late in his career. After this description, you might be expecting outrageous paintings with wild topics and bright, shiny colours. I’m afraid you have been mislead if this is the case, for Manet’s paintings, with 21st century eyes, show beauty the most. I have a weak point for his flower bouquets, but that is what Manet-lovers are generally used to. This exhibition stands out with its uniqueness by presenting to us the portraits of this artist, and his works, collected from all over the world. Pictures of his friends, family and public figures are mostly exhibited, showing how the painter toyed with his sitters as actors of everyday life. He himself spoke of portraiture as one of the most difficult forms of art. As he said in 1880: “You would hardly believe how difficult it is to place a figure alone on a canvas, and to concentrate all the interest on this single and unique figure and still keep it living and real.” If you have a sweet tooth for beauty in arts, then I highly recommend this exhibition. And basically, to anyone who needs a little break from everyday life, if only for a short half hour.

namely impressionism, emerged after 1870, and was received, at first, with great outrage. The impressionists, for example Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet and Edgar Degas, considered themselves independent from contemporary artists. They were more thought of - by the critics - as radicals, mainly for rejecting the conventional artistic training that was, at the time, expected from anyone who took up a paintbrush. This, of course, doesn’t mean that these artists wanted to become the anarchists of their time. They simply took interest in the odd and the unexpected and opposed heroism. After the first impressionist exhibition in Paris in 1873, the wave quickly spread onto painters throughout France and impressionism was soon taken over by writers and musicians all over the world too. Edouard Manet was one of these troublemakers of the arts scene of late 19th century Paris. In 1863, he composed The Luncheon on the Grass, a picture of two well-dressed man and a naked woman lounging in the park. The picture caused outrage, as it wasn’t conventional to depict nudes in contemporary settings, whereas classicist creations in which a nude Venus, for example, did not draw such aggressive reactions. However, before becoming the centre of outrage in Paris, Manet studied under other artists to learn the basics and then travelled to Italy, Germany and the Netherlands to discover new idols in the European arts field. He began painting at the age of 18 and first experimented with realism; he produced still-life paintings and, as his contemporaries, historical figures. But the interesting bump in his career was when he started his own path, deviating from what he knew. He started focusing on depicting light and abstract shapes more than real colours and forms. His new “style” was received with love by some and was often rejected by others, but his works became well known in France.

The final boutique to satisfy your vintage cravings is Once Upon A Time, which recently

appeared in Company Magazine. This audacious, reinventing brand caters for the antiquarianlovers who cherish a bit of edge in their wardrobes. The Glasgowborn business has travelled with ‘Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair’; the on-the-move, all-vintage trade event that’s been hailed a shopping phenomenon in Vogue and has been attended by passé-fans Chloe Sevigny and Daisy Lowe. The fairy-tale name is no giveaway to the brand’s aesthetic, as safe and sweet is the opposite of its true essence. Once Upon A Time embraces the popularity of the 90s, offering an effortlessly cool mash-up of plaid shirt dresses, studded and ombre denim shorts, LBD’s, spiked beanies (5), shell jackets and marbled tees. The odd theatrical corset top and bodycon leather dress allude to Leigh Lezark’s playful sense of style. Every item is brilliantly reworked but radically on trend, and like the previous four boutiques, their prices won’t break the bank!

LIVY MONTGOMERIE PRESENTS

2013’s exciting Spring/Summer offerings are adding a twist to popular styles, while subsequently challenging fashion on a grand scale. This season Pop Art, Block Colour and Zig Zags are leaping onto the fashion radar.

Those who share the love for this adventurous era but can’t afford a £250 top with your student loan, have no fear! It’s not just the designers that are selling out with their colour-popping lines. High street retailers are hot on their heels. So, how do you create this look? Make it bright, make it vivid and make a statement. This is not the time for colour coordination; chuck it all together and see what you create. Whether you’re going for a slogan tee or patterns of plenty, both will stand out from the crowd. As always, Topshop’s S/S ‘13 collection is to die for, and they’ve been sure to walk the new arty-farty path.

From Andy Warhol inspired print, to Mickey and Minnie Mouse motifs, Pop Art is making a heroic return in a whole new take on the history of art! With fashion becoming brave and bold, the introduction of Pop Art slots in nicely, even making the extraordinary seem normal. Artists such as Roy Lichtenstein have inspired this grand challenge in the fashion world. His famous paintings and comic strips have influenced designers like Markus Lupfer and Phillip Lim, who have been designing and creating in this witty manner for years. They are definitely men well ahead of their time. While Lupfer refines everyday basics in conjunction with his humour and innovative use of paint and

They’ve even gone as far as creating Pop Art Undies (1) which are the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. As you can see they have thought of it all, so if you’re on the shy side but still want to express yourself, a more casual look could include these electric blue disco treggings (2), worn with neon shoes and a cute polka-dot top. For more diverse fashionistas, my favourite cartoon dress (3) would be perfect. With art-inspired influences ranging from Pop Art to Cubism, to the expressionist movement, this outbreak in fashion is one Bauhaus would be sure not to miss!

Handbags KATE GRIFFITHS

If you’ve had your head buried in the text books for the past month then.....NEWSFLASH, Stripes are currently a HUGE trend! Everyone from Marc Jacobs to Christian Dior were championing this print on the catwalks, and it’s not just the clothes that are getting striped; handbags, shoes and even finger nails are getting in on the action. With this in mind, and being the bargain hunter that I am, I thought I’d have a go at re-creating this trend for a fraction of the price. I chose to re-invent an old black clutch bag that had been sitting in the back of my cupboard gathering dust, and after a trip to Fabric Land in Kingston with a total spend of £3.75, I had all the materials I needed to transform this old, unused clutch bag to something bang on trend. (pic 1) I chose to stick to a monochrome colour pallet, and with black and white being the colours of the season, this will be another fashion box ticked. The first step was to attach the white ribbon to each side of the bag, ensuring you get even spacing for the other stripes. I soon found out that it was a good job I’d bought white thread in my Fabric Land spree as my trusty fabric glue had let me down and wasn’t sticking the ribbon to the bag. All it took was a couple of stitches on the inside of the main compartment, the bottom of the bag and finally, the inside of the envelope flap for the ribbon to hold in place. (pic 2) This process was then repeated for the middle stripe, making sure that once the bag is closed, the stripe lines up from top to bottom. (pic 3) Once the middle stripe was done, it was a case of judging by eye where the final stripe should sit between the middle stripe and the end stripe. Of course, you could measure exactly where it should go, but I found that I was able to judge it pretty well without such technology! (pic 4) And there you have it, one bang on trend clutch bag that Marc Jacobs himself couldn’t fail but be impressed by.... all for under £5! Obviously this bag will go with anything, but I’ve gone for clashing prints and paired mine with a neon floral print dress (neon trend box ticked!) (pic 5) I’d love to see how you all get on with giving this trend a DIY spin. Tweet your striped creations, whatever they may be, to @FreshFashionRoe and you never know, your design could feature in our «Fresh Style Spotted» pages! Happy Crafting!

I INDEPENDENT CINEMA.

How many of you complain about the preposterous prices of cinema tickets? Even at student discounts we are being charged £9.50 per movie, and imagine if we wanted to watch something in 3D. I propose an alternative. To all you film lovers, why not try a bit of independent cinema?

I realise that our consumerist generation is in love with the blockbuster phenomenon, but not all good films need to be packed with special effects. Independent films are professional productions that aren’t funded by major film studios. These also differ from blockbusters in that the distribution of the movies is limited rather than mainstream. Often they are first shown in film festival before eventually making it to a theatrical release. So let’s invest on a different type of cinema. Riverside Studios in Hammersmith is the closest independent cinema to our University, and it is packed with amazing deals. It shows internationally acclaimed films and feature films. It too has student Independent cinema gives you a chance to be exposed to different cultures through their films and stories, and will contrast to the Hollywood dominated blockbuster sphere we are used to. The double bills in Riverside Studios are set up by works of

Some of the latest showings were from Clint Eastwood, French director Jacques Audiard and most famously, Ang Lee, with his latest blockbuster Life of Pi and his astonishing love story Brokeback Mountain. Paying less than the price of one ticket to spend a brilliant day in the cinema with friends is a fantastic investment, let alone the fact that you come out feeling more cultured. Riverside Studios is one of the most successful performance spaces as well, with so much going on in there it is a phenomenal place to just drop by and see what is going on. One bus ride away from our campus and on Hammersmith embankment, it is a real shame if we don’t take advantage of this incredible venue. So for all the Film, Drama, Dance, English and Photography students, don’t hesitate to visit, and obviously, everyone else should go too! I for one attended the double bill of Jacques Audiard films, and felt it was a very well spent £8.50. Let me reassure you that independent cinemas, such as this one, have seats more comfortable than some mainstream cinemas I have been to in my time. Try something a little different! If you love cinema and you love the multi-cultural city that is London, then you have no reason not to enjoy the opportunities it gives you.

In 1985, a new musical that had been adapted from a Victor Hugo novel had hit London’s West End, and was struck by mostly negative reviews. Twenty-eight years later, this show has become the West End’s longest running musical and has been performed over ten thousand times. This show is Les Misérables. Last month, the musical was adapted into a movie that has taken over £30 million at the UK Box Office already ... and it’s not difficult to understand why. The film features a star-studded cast, including Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried. Jackman portrays the convict Jean Valjean with passion and sincerity, while Hathaway delivers a heart-rending performance of “I Dreamed A Dream” as Fantine; surely one of the most powerful moments in the history of cinema. Most surprisingly, however, is Crowe’s performance as Javert, the police officer torn between his heart and his duty. Although he has provoked many negative responses from critics, I couldn’t help but admire his integrity and commitment to the role. Okay, so his vocals weren’t quite on par with the rest of the cast, (Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia flashback!) but considering the soundtrack was recorded completely live on set, I think he gave it a pretty respectable shot! After two and a half hours of music, death, love and sorrow, a triumphant chorus of “Do You Hear the People Sing” brings this epic adaptation to a close. It’s a truly heart-warming moment, and when the lights come up, you’ll be wiping away your smudged mascara with a smile.

BoA. For the first time in her thirteen year career, Asia’s most loved female singer; Korean pop queen BoA finally performed a concert of her own, which she named BoA Special Live 2013 ~ Here I Am ~ in the capital city of her home country, South Korea. The two-hour show at Seoul’s prestigious Olympic Hall (in Seoul’s Olympic Park) was seen by a total of 6,000 fans over the last weekend in January, a total that included myself. There is no doubt about it - it stands as the best concert I have seen so far. As if that wasn’t enough, I was also invited to attend the official press conference for the concert, as the only non-Korean journalist there! Korean concert tickets are notoriously difficult for fans outside of Korea to obtain, especially if the show sells out in less than thirty seconds like BoA’s did. Not any more though, thanks to the SM C&C Global Packages, created and designed especially for international fans. The company, a division of BoA’s label SM Entertainment, has been selling these packages since the SMTOWN Live in Seoul concert last year to great success. The scheme grants thousands of international fans the opportunity to stay in a top hotel in the city where the concert is taking place, take part in fun activities and, most importantly, attend the concert in a specially selected area that

28 FRESH MAGAZINE

ensures the international fans will have a great view. It is this global package scheme that allowed me to visit Seoul and attend BoA’s concert. As a long term BoA fan (seven years and counting!) I can truly say that BoA did not disappoint with her concert, and SM C&C did not disappoint with their global package. The concert set list boasted most of BoA’s most popular songs, which the superstar effortlessly sang completely live whilst busting out her most iconic dance moves. With a total of six costume changes, the legend warmed up freezing cold Seoul and gave a dazzling performance of her Korean, English and Japanese songs on a brilliantly designed LED Floor stage. Her angelic vocals went hand-in-hand with the full live band, something rarely done now in an industry over-saturated by electronic sounds. The concert was met with nothing but praise from fans and critics alike, yet BoA couldn’t help but express her disappointment at the press conference at only playing two shows for her first Korean tour. Nonetheless, the singer revealed her desire to carry on the tour around Asia, and hopefully the rest of the world at a later point in 2013, as well as branching out into acting in dramas and movies. BoA also exclusively debuted her

brand new single “Disturbance” at the concert, which the fans unsurprisingly reveled in. The love song was written and composed by BoA, who explained that she would like to start taking a more hands-on approach with her music, something she showcased with her seventh album Only One in 2012. The music video features Taemin of the SM Entertainment boy band SHINee, a choice BoA is glad she made, although she joked that fans of SHINee are probably super jealous of her now! All in all, BoA clearly showcased why she is called the Queen of K-Pop with these special lives. After 13 years at the top, BoA is finally coming into her own as an artist and carving out a sound she can truly call her own. BoA’s powerful declaration, “Here I Am”, has never had more truth to it than now, and the future still looks as bright as ever for Asia’s shining star.

Freedomworksfilms/ Greg Patillo If you are a 90s kid, I’m sure your ears are as attuned as mine to the classic ‘Inspector Gadget’ theme tune - we all love it! Even if Ron Burgundy actually played his jazz flute in Anchorman, it wouldn’t be a patch on the performance ability of Mr Greg Patillo. Whilst banging out an incredibly accurate - if not improved - version of the original, he is able to beat box using the breaks between his flute playing. So when does this guy take a breath exactly? Be sure to check out his version of the Super Mario Bros theme tune, its equally impressive!

Nick Pitera This is a man’s world...but it’d be nothing without a woman. Nick Pitera has got it covered for both of the genders. In his cover of ‘A Whole New World’ from Walt Disney’s Aladdin, Nick sings both the male and female vocal parts and the change between the two is done without an ounce of struggle. It’s almost abnormal that he can switch between the two so comfortably and that his female vocals are significantly better than the average woman could produce. Over 30 million views on this video says it all.

3

Tylerwardmusic “I knew you were trouble”- A stunning violin, guitar and vocal collaboration between three young and talented musicians. Three way harmonies paired with striking violin melodies and a rhythm guitar make for a successful trio. Tyler Ward’s solo YouTube video uploads have allowed him, amongst others, to professionally play music as a full-time occupation. Also listen to “Somewhere With You” and “Falling” if you are interested in hearing two of his strongest original tracks.

Shakkapella The name gives away their game. These guys are not just any acapella act, however; they are master mixers. Due to radio overplay it is safe to say that people grew tired of “Somebody That I Used To Know”, but...they’ve gone and done it. Mixing this track with an Usher tune isn’t the obvious choice but even so Shakkapella manage to exceed all expectation on this occasion. This is a must-hear track; let’s get them the views they deserve! If you fancy a listen, then search their mix of Azaelia Banks and Chris Brown.

Jarle Bernhoft The term one-man band is taken to a new level by this king of the loop pedal. I’m sorry Ed Sheeran but you’ll have to step aside. Baring in mind that Bernhoft is originally from Norway, his grasp on not only the language but also managing to write songs that contain clear features of British soul and funk, is impressive. He has a unique style and has plenty of his own original material. Although “C’mon Talk” is undoubtedly his best track, having reached 2 million views amongst the world of YouTubers, he has released tons of other quality tunes and he is currently touring. Visit his YouTube page to discover Jarle at his best!

jpcoopermusic Jp Cooper’s strength is without a doubt his soulful voice (and the dreads); kudos is granted with regard to his pitch ability too. This combined with strong, feel good guitar riffs accompanied by various stringed instruments (the double bass being one of them) is a lovely concoction. He captures many emotions all at once and that is quite the art. If you were in the mood for something humble with a kick then I’d be sure to visit jpcoopermusic on Youtube!

Esme Denters “She sings my song better than me”, these are the exact words of Justin Timberlake, said whilst performing a cover of his very own ‘Cry Me A River’ alongside Esme Denters. This is debatably true in the most complimentary sense possible. Justin was so impressed by Esme’s unspeakable talent that he went on to write and release ‘Love Dealer’ with her; the track has nearly 10 million views suggesting that it was largely successful. It just goes to show that one person posting videos on YouTube really can lift their music career off the ground. Not only does she possess a remarkable talent, but if aesthetics are a swaying factor then she certainly won’t disappoint. Esme’s got it all- the voice, the looks and an instantly likeable personality.

8

Kina Grannis This young lady’s cover of ‘Volcano’ by Damien Rice was the first video I saw and it has never left me since because it was such a beautiful take on what is an already beautiful piece of music. She sings with a fragility but always leaves you feeling uplifted rather than saddened. Since her debut, 4 years ago, Kina has landed herself a record deal with Interscope Records and has won awards for Best Web-Born artist. The official music video to one of her most popular originals ‘In Your Arms’ is adorable; it’s done in a stop motion style and really compliments the light-hearted nature of the song. Kina’s voice is one of the strongest to have emerged from YouTube and her songs - both covers and originals - are all stunning. There isn’t a single video on her account that is disappointing, so please take the time to listen!

Retrograde James Blake

3 Wraith Peace

Heavy Feet Local Natives

Taken from the upcoming album: Overgrown. Blake's pleasantly oscillated hums and somber pianoplaying are slowly built up with automated handclaps, thick bass and wavering synth notes. Masterfully layered.

An organised disarray of drums, evocative lyrics, subtle orchestral undertones... Aaron Dessner (of The National Fame)’s production is highly noticeable in this impressive comeback single from the Los Angeles group.

I'm Sorry I'm Such An Idiot Yukon

Where Are We Now? David Bowie

This opening tune from 7-track album: Well, Whatever Happens, Happens (free download on bandcamp) is a sparse masterpiece, bringing to mind the Strokes' demo I'll Try Anything Once. Not bad for an 18 year old from Brooklyn.

7 We No Who U R Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Another veteran of the music industry returning this year is Nick Cave, with the release of 15th(!) album: Push The Sky Away. Ghostly backing vocals, occasional flutters of flute and vaguely threatening lyrics all make for interesting listening.

The first single of 2013 from the Birmingham ("B-town") band, following their impeccable EP: Delicious, released last year. Numerous guitar effects, mellifluous harmonies and tasteful use of bongos are all present.

6 A Taste of Struggle A/T/O/S

Bowie only went and released his first song in 10 years! A wonderfully mellow song, reminiscent of his 2002 album; Heathen. His lyrics dwell upon the years spent in Berlin, where he recorded his most famous trilogy of classic albums.

An introductory track of sorts - no details are known yet as to who is involved in this project. The combination of hazy production, keyboard glitches and sensuous singing, results in a remarkably soothing and soulful track.

Flashbacks, Memories and Dreams The Virgins

Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark) Unknown Mortal Orchestra

After being MIA for nearly five years, The Virgins return with a new album set for March. The first single has singer Donald Cumming doing his best Lou Reed vocal mannerisms. Funky bassline also included.

Some good ol' lo-fi indie-rock to be had here with this band from Portland, Oregon. This track is taken from their recently released album: II. Head honcho: Ruban Nieldon's whispery voice brings to mind a younger sounding Iron and Wine.

10 Torso of the Week Everything Everything

"Girl you've been hitting the treadmill like a freak". As far as hummable refrains go, it isn't exactly Hey Jude's 'na na na na na na na'. But this track from the Manchester band's 2nd album: Arc is as catchy as its lyrics are leery.
