Many of my favorite memories in New Mexico have included driving solo down a quiet open road, enveloped by an expansive sunset and hugged by sagebrush at every turn. It’s an overwhelming sense of bliss that is difficult to explain but felt so palpably. SAMANTHA + JASON sandia crest While Samantha and Jason grew up in the same hometown of Las Vegas, New Mexico, the two never connected until they both moved to Albuquerque as young adults. Samantha and Jason’s small-town roots play a coincidental detail to their love story. Not only did the pair attend the same elementary and high school, Samantha’s mother was Jason’s kindergarten teacher. After an introduction in Albuquerque, a friendship formed and continued over the next ten years. Jason regularly visited Denver, Colorado, for Broncos football games and when Samantha moved to the Mile High City for work the two friends naturally reunited. One November evening, Samantha and Jason met over drinks in Larimer Square and quickly realized their purely platonic relationship had matured into a romantic one. Three years later, the couple was back in Denver. Samantha and Jason stopped at Union Station to grab a drink before heading to dinner and as they were walking out of the renovated 1914 train station, Jason got down on one knee and asked Samantha to marry him in front of family.

PRISCIELLA + GIRARD albuquerque Prisciella has Twitter to thank for introducing her to now-fiancé Girard. In January 2017, Girard posted a photo that appeared on Prisciella’s timeline and the rest is, as they say, history. After months of liking each other’s tweets, Girard worked up the courage to DM Prisciella. Strangely, Girard asked Prisciella for a lasagna recipe which he later admitted the message had to be so ridiculous that Prisciella would have to respond. Jessica + David LOS ALAMOS
It was through music that Jessica and David crossed paths. David, a drummer, was playing in a band when the frontman, who happened to be a mutual friend, introduced the pair. Five years later, Jessica and David traveled abroad to Germany for a wedding. While visiting, the couple squeezed in an excursion through the German Alps and into Amsterdam. After an epic Afghani wedding celebration, Jessica and David traveled to Berlin along with David’s parents. At an Italian restaurant, David’s mother passed down his great-grandmother’s ring that she had brought from the states. Two bottles of wine later, David finally popped the question! Jessica and David said “I do” at Bandelier National Monument on February 20th.

Bandelier National Monument is a magical place, imagine acres of rugged but beautiful canyon and mesa country, with evidence of Ancestral Pueblo villages extending back over 11,000 years. The precious sanctuary doubles as a perfect canvas for an intimate elopement ceremony with Southwestern elements. When Jessica and David decided to elope, it was overdue. The couple’s anniversary is in February so, without hesitation they jumped on the idea of tying the knot in New Mexico. “We were looking for some place enchanted to celebrate each other this time and down the road. That’s what we found, it was perfect for us,” Jessica shares.

Bree and Michael met at work through a mutual friend. Bree was working full time and performing in a local theater during the evenings while Michael was in and out of town on business. Despite inconvenient timing, the pair decided to go for pizza at a neighborhood bar and were instantly drawn to one another. Nearly two years later on a quiet Saturday morning in May, Michael tearfully knelt down and proposed to Bree at their Texas home. “We proceeded to hold each other in bed all morning crying and loving on our puppy, Louie. We have no pictures, but we have a perfect memory, and I couldn’t imagine it another way,” Bree reminisces. Bree and Michael planned an elegant wedding with homage to the Southwest for July 17th.

GOING TO THE CHAPEL
The couple exchanged vows on a legendary landmark settled more than 150 years ago by Jean Baptiste Lamy, now known as Bishop’s Lodge. Both coming from Christian backgrounds, it was especially meaningful for Bree and Michael to be married next to the historic chapel built in the 1860’s that has undergone sensitive restoration to preserve its heritage.

MONSOON SEASON
“We got married in July, which is a beautiful time of year called the monsoon season. Right as I was walking down the aisle the clouds rolled in and shaded us from the sun. Luckily the rain held off until cocktail hour and I have to say, that was my favorite moment. We had two tents set up where we all congregated underneath as the summer rain rolled in around us. It cooled down the day and brought in one of our favorite smells of fresh piñón!”

RANCHO RELAXO
The reception took place under twinkling lights on the venue’s outdoor lawn space with the same splendor of New Mexico mountains in the background. Geometric rattan pendants were woven into the airy tented structure which perfectly complemented the natural round back woven chairs. Styled menu cards and a trio of unique plateware greeted each guest’s place setting for dinner. The party then shifted to dancing with a live band and lounge area outfitted with a cigar and tequila bar for an impressive nightcap. “I wanted the reception to be very ‘rancho relaxo’ and I think we achieved that!” the bride reveals.

Shelly and Ryan first met while attending a photography workshop in Asheville, North Carolina. The two became close friends, but didn’t begin dating until years down the road. After a year of doing “the long-distance thing,” Shelly and Ryan decided to move in together in Denver, Colorado. Nearly two years later, Ryan popped the question at Artists Point in Boulder, Colorado. Since Shelly and Ryan both know many photographers, it wasn’t unusual when one of their photographer friends asked them to model for a project. What Shelly thought was an authentic styled shoot turned out to be a real-life proposal. “Photography has been something that has always brought us together,” the bride explains. Shelly and Ryan share a profound reverence for Santa Fe, so it was only fitting to be married there. The couple planned a modern Southwest elopement for August 11th.

“Our officiant brought in the elements of wind, earth, and water to our ceremony. She let us know that every couple has an ‘element’ that represents their relationship, and that element shows itself on the wedding day. Right before we were to start the ceremony, a large gust of wind came and knocked over our ceremony floral altar. While our florist was so sad to have it got knocked down, we saw it as our ‘element!’ Wind represents breath and the spoken word. We have always tried to keep our communication strong throughout our relationship.”

Nik +Nini TA O S Nik and Nini met at one of Denver, Colorado’s best local spots for brunch. At the time, Nini was a server and Nik was in a relationship. After years of knowing each other in the restaurant setting, Nik returned one day as a single woman. Nik and Nini exchanged phone numbers and went on their first date only a few days later. The only catch was that Nini was leaving the following day to complete her Master of Fine Arts program in Florida. As fate would have it, the two endured distance until Nini made her way back home to Denver. Fast forward four years, Nini proposed to Nik on an unforgettable road trip to Utah. The couple packed their car and drove west to Nik’s favorite state. To start the trip, Nini planned a hike to Fishers Towers in Moab, a maze of soaring rock formations composed of dark red sandstone. “That day I kept double checking our pack to assure we had enough water and food, Nini was getting rather defensive over me looking through our backpack. I was caught off guard and a little irritated at the moment. We ended up getting into a bit of an argument but continued on with our hike. My gut told me that I had just potentially ruined a magical moment,” Nik recalls. Later that day, the pair settled into their Airbnb dome in Monticello. “It was perfect, the sky was all ours, we were alone in the desert, and the sun was setting. I remember the colors feeling almost painted across the sky. After settling in, I set my phone up to capture a time-lapse of the sunset, seconds later I see her burst into tears with a little black box. I said yes a million times,” Nik reminisces. Nik and Nini planned a desert, boho elopement for August 14th.

Johana and Patrick were friends long before a relationship ever flourished. But, that all changed in 2017 when Johana and Patrick were at a local country bar with a group of their friends. Madison and CJ met in 2016 at a neighborhood Irish Pub. It happened to be Game 3 of the World Series and the Chicago Cubs were winning, which was a considerable moment for any baseball fan. There was one television in the small bar, and Madison’s back was to it. She wanted to watch the game, but was also interested in talking to CJ whom she was on a date with. When Madison said, “I’m going to face the television to watch this game, because it’s very important, but I’m going to be listening to you, so please keep talking,” CJ knew right away Madison was the one. Four years later, after opening gifts on Christmas morning, CJ surprised Madison with a picture-perfect present. Madison and CJ planned a desert, vintage wedding for September 10th.

Sukhee was working as a nurse in Baltimore, Maryland and Sai was completing a public defender fellowship in Washington, D.C. when the two connected on Hinge. Luckily both of their distance settings were set to the default radius of 30 miles. Sukhee and Sai started a conversation and shortly after met for their first date at a Biergarten nestled in D.C. A year and a half later, Sai crafted origami hearts, each featuring a doodle of the couple’s relationship. “He had them spread around the kitchen, one of our favorite spaces in our home,” Sukhee reminisces. Together, they opened the hand folded paper feeling a sense of nostalgia for the past. The sentimentality continued as Sai asked Sukhee to marry him! Sukhee and Sai planned a fresh and minimal multicultural wedding for September 19th.

In Sukhee and Sai’s cultures, wedding dates are determined by an astrologer who studies the birth charts of the bride and groom to determine an auspicious date and time for holding the marriage ceremony. With their date decided, the couple chose to honor their Sri Lankan Buddhist and South Indian Hindu traditions. “Both ceremonies are thousands of years old, it felt special for us to perform them in the way that our parents and so many others have for generations,” shares the bride. For the Sri Lankan ceremony, Sukhee and Sai’s fingers were tied together as water was poured over the knot, symbolizing their union. To complete the traditions, Sukhee ditched the designer ensemble and donned her mother’s wedding day sari.

SANDSTONE BLUFFS In 1986, Karen and Steve met while attending night school. Steve was an Airman stationed at Robins Air Force Base just outside of Warner Robins, Georgia where Karen resided. At the time, Karen worked on base as a civilian and had dreams of traveling as a flight attendant with Delta after completing her degree. Steve had plans to get his HVAC Certification while in the military then move back home to Ohio. Little did the pair know they would explore the world together as Steve served his country. After Steve retired from the military, he asked Karen where she wanted to live. Without hesitation, Karen chose New Mexico, “It’s the most beautiful state we’ve ever been stationed at in the military and I had always wanted to go back there,” Karen shares. Karen and Steve celebrated thirty five years of marriage with a photo session at Sandstone Bluffs in El Malpais National Monument.
