Building Business Royal Printing Solutions’ Growth in Textile Signage by Cassandra Balentine

P

roducing high-quality graphics consistently across a range of substrates takes the right mix of skill, equipment, and media. Building a strong and loyal customer base requires commitment to quality as well as excellent customer support. Royal Printing Solutions understands and practices these concepts. Established in 2006, the company is a family-owned wholesale printer based in Aurora, CO. With 45 employees and 35,00 total square feet of operating space, it produces everything from banners; rigid signage; graphics—including wall, window, floor, and vehicles; to fabric-based soft signage.

independent sign and banner companies, and franchiserelated sign companies.

Breaking it Down

Most of Royal Printing Solutions’ business—approximately 90 percent—is in some form wide format related. The remaining ten percent is made up of smaller print graphics to round out its product portfolio. Its wide format offerings include a range of banner products, flags, and decals, as well as rigid output. With its flatbed printing capabilities, the company prints on a diverse portfolio of surfaces including aluminum composite material, acrylic, and styrene.

The print provider offers large format wholesale printing to the trade. Solutions, estimates that textile printing makes up about ten percent of its overall business. This is an area that it is strategically investing in and expects strong growth in the coming years.

To produce its textile work Royal Printing Solutions employs an EFI VUTEk FabriVU 340 and recently added an EFI VUTEk FabriVU 340i+ last year. The addition of the second FabriVU significantly bumped up its capacity for textile printing. Royal Printing Solutions prefers the transfer dye-sub process over direct printing to fabric for a few reasons, the top being the ability to achieve a better quality product, shares Billups.

Transfer dye-sub also benefits its media range. Royal Printing Solutions stocks 11 different fabric materials at any given time. “It’s easier for us to print on paper and transfer as needed,” he shares. Many of its preferred fabrics come from Aberdeen Fabrics, Inc. Aberdeen is a U.S. manufacturer and distributor of 100 percent polyester, custom engineered, technical textile materials that are well suited for many fabric printing and graphics applications.

The company has been doing business with Aberdeen for many years. In fact, Billups says the relationship predates his time with Royal Printing Solutions. “We love Aberdeen for three reasons. One is they take care of us from a relationship standpoint like gold. Prices are also competitive and the selection is world class. And the third reason is fabrics are digitaloutput.net

manufactured in the U.S. in an environmentally sustainability way.”

The print provider also credits its ability to produce high-quality fabric output in part to its investment in a Monti Antonio heat press, which can handle rolls up to 126 inches wide. Additionally, the shop has a custom cutting and sewing finishing department. It runs three shifts a day, operating 24 hours Sunday through Friday. As the company grows, it anticipates adding capacity on Saturdays too. “We have the capability to do it all—flags, table throws, custom throws, silicone edge graphics, backdrops, etc.,” says Billups.

The company continues to invest in the textile printing space. “We’ve been doing dye-sub transfer for more than a decade. We’ve gotten very good at it from a printing perspective as well as finishing, including cutting and sewing,” shares Billups.

production-related proof is sent and approved by the customer.

Once proof approvals are complete, the job is put into production. Final products are shipped via UPS for normal orders and FedEx Freight for large jobs shipped on pallets. Royal Printing Solutions’ standard production timeline for textile-based work is two days from approvals and it has the ability to accept rush jobs. Billups says it has an on-time hit rate of 99.8 percent of jobs going out on time. Royal Printing Solutions also boasts a spoilage rate of two percent. “We spend a small fortune on quality control,” admits Billups, noting that this applies for all jobs—whether it is one flag or 10,000 banners.

Looking Ahead

Royal Printing Solutions’ technical and operational confidence is born from over a decade of dedicated experience. “The textile market is expanding and we’re a growing company. We want to be a bigger player in this growing space,” concludes Billups.

Its investment in equipment, staff, processes, and operational discipline enables it to run its textile presses 24 hours a day. The company is currently revamping its website with enhanced ecommerce capabilities and implementing a new MIS. Its commitment to customer service and quality control mean it is poised to serve the trade with high-quality textile printing in large quantities. D See page 18 for more info.

Custom Flags

At press time, Royal Printing Solutions was wrapping up a job for a repeat customer—a large marketing agency with national accounts. The job was a series of custom flags, which were printed back to back with flag mesh from Aberdeen along with blockout liner. This particular job followed a similar path to all of its orders. A customer communicates with its sales representative to take the order. The representative collects the digital assets, which are preferably print-ready files. ehicle wraps are used in a number of industries for two reasons—marketing and customization. One segment benefiting from vehicle wraps is the automotive aftermarket. This category generally favors color change films over printed graphics. “Color change films provide a cost-effective alternative to paint, allowing owners to change the appearance of their vehicles without the need for repainting. They are available in a range

{ 8 } January 2024 | Digital Output

of colors, textures, and finishes, making them highly versatile,” explains Ryan Allen, regional technical specialist, North America, Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions.

Chasing Demand

Color change films’ popularity in the automotive aftermarket is influenced by customization trends, economic factors, and advancements in material technology—to name a few. Above) EVOLV's color change film collection includes more than 100 colors and effects.

digitaloutput.net

12/13/23 9:44 PM

Custom wraps are an extension of the consumer’s personality. “Individuals increasingly turn to color change films to give cars a unique appearance,” explains Allen. He believes demand related to customization has actually increased throughout the years because more people continue to look for ways to express individuality through their vehicles.

“Vinyl, particularly color change films, are increasingly popular for individuals and businesses looking to customize and rejuvenate the look of their vehicles without committing to a permanent paint

job,” agrees Mattia Casarotto, area manager, EVOLV. Furthermore, “the rise of social media and car enthusiast communities has amplified the desire for customization as individuals showcase their unique vehicles online,” continues Casarotto.

With the automotive aftermarket shifting towards ecommerce and digital marketing, it is easier than ever before for consumers to choose colors, finishes, and textures to change their car’s appearance. “The automotive aftermarket industry has seen a significant shift towards ecommerce and digital

marketing. Online platforms make it easier for consumers to discover and purchase color change films, contributing to increased demand,” shares Allen. While color change films offer an easy way to customize a vehicle, they provide another function. “Many of these films also offer paint protection, shielding the vehicle’s original finish from chips and scratches. This added value attracts consumers interested in preserving their vehicle’s resale value,” admits Allen. “Keeping the original paint job intact by using vinyl films can

help maintain or even increase the vehicle’s resale value. Potential buyers may appreciate the preservation of the original paint, and the option to keep or remove the vinyl wrap as they see fit,” notes Casarotto. Allen says consumers are more interested in maintaining higher resale values on their vehicles than ever before, which aligns with the benefits of color change film offering paint protection. “With more people recognizing the importance of vehicle aesthetics in resale, there’s a growing market for color change films as a protective measure.”

market of individuals who want to personalize their cars but are restricted from making permanent changes. Color change films allow for customization without violating lease terms, and they can be removed easily at the end of the lease period.”

Another reason for increased demand—advancements in color change film technology. “These films are easier to apply and remove, making them more accessible to a broader audience. Improved durability and quality have boosted consumer confidence in color change films, leading to higher demand,” notes Allen. “Advancements in color change film technology have expanded the options available to consumers. From color shifting film finishes to matte and satin textures, the diversity of available choices has fueled interest and demand,” adds Casarotto.

Colors, Textures, Finishes

1 Economic factors are at play in other ways. “Repainting a car can be expensive, with high-quality jobs costing several thousand dollars. In contrast, a high-quality vinyl wrap might cost anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000, making it more economical for many,” shares Casarotto. 1) A McLaren wrapped in Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film ColorFlow Celestial Satin in Frozen Ocean.

DO_24_1-3_ColorChangeRevFinal-SWMD.indd 10

“During periods of economic uncertainty, people may be more inclined to customize their existing vehicles rather than investing in a new one, which can drive demand for color change films,” says Allen.

With more consumers leasing versus purchasing vehicles, Casarotto believes color change films are also effected. “There’s a growing

New colors, textures, and finishes are constantly launched to cater to demand from the automotive aftermarket. The products available for sale are vetted by many parties from consumers to installers.

Market research is key, admits Allen. “This involves the study of evolving consumer preferences, style trends, and feedback from enthusiasts. It’s essential to align color and texture choices with the latest trends and emerging fashions, as they play a pivotal role in automotive customization.” Gathering insight from installers and end users is also a part of

the development process. “Those on the front lines—the installers—have valuable insights into customer preferences and can provide feedback on which colors or textures customers are asking for. End users, through their purchasing choices and feedback, play a significant role in indicating which colors and textures are popular and which new ones they might desire,” shares Casarotto.

Besides consumer preference, other reasons colors, textures, and finishes are brought to market involve environmental and technological advancements. “Environmental considerations influence decisions, leading to the development of more eco-friendly options. Technological advancements also contribute to innovative textures and special effects, expanding the range of choices,” says Allen. “The capabilities of manufacturing processes and the availability of new materials can influence the creation of new textures and finishes. For instance, advancements in manufacturing might allow for the creation of a unique finish or texture that wasn’t possible before,” adds Casarotto.

Behind the scenes, development times vary. In any case, the process at Avery Dennison includes concept design, testing, prototyping, and quality control. “This comprehensive approach ensures that the new colors and textures not only align with market demands and trends but also meet rigorous quality standards and manufacturing feasibility before introduction to the market,” explains Allen. digitaloutput.net

Film and Adhesive

As with any material and its applicable application, it is important to dive into their physical composition, how they are manufactured, and any other permanent characteristics. Color change films used in automotive aftermarket applications are generally calendered. The main reasons for this involve durability, conformability, and consistent performance.

“Cast films are manufactured through a casting process that ensures precise control over thickness and uniformity, resulting in thinner yet highly durable film that can retain and reset its memory. In the segment of automotive aftermarket, where exposure to diverse weather conditions and road debris is common, the longevity and resilience of cast films is essential,” shares Allen. Casarotto adds that cast films tend to have a longer lifespan than calendered films. This is especially important for vehicle applications, where the film is exposed to various environmental conditions such as UV rays, rain, snow, and temperature fluctuations. In addition, because the casting process produces films that are thinner compared to calendered, the reduced thickness aids in the film’s ability to conform to a vehicle’s curves and recesses, shares Casarotto.

The visual appeal of cast film can’t be overlooked. “Cast films exhibit excellent conformability, allowing them to wrap seamlessly digitaloutput.net

on both personalization and longlasting results,” shares Allen. Removability of the adhesive is particularly important in color change films. PSAs are designed to remove without leaving adhesive residue or damaging the original paint.

2 around the curves, contours, and complex recesses of a vehicle’s body. This is crucial for achieving a smooth and uniform appearance. The high-gloss and smooth finish of cast film replicates the quality of a factory paint job, and their removability without adhesive residue or paint damage makes them ideal for temporary or semi-permanent installations,” says Allen.

Adhesives are equally important when discussing vehicle wraps. “The adhesives affiliated with color change films in the automotive aftermarket are chosen based on their ability to provide a durable bond that can withstand external environmental factors, while also offering flexibility and ease of use to installers. The goal is to ensure longevity, aesthetic appeal,

and protection for the vehicle,” states Casarotto.

For color change films, pressuresensitive adhesives (PSAs) are typically used for their flexibility as well as durability. “These adhesives offer a straightforward application process, relying on pressure for bonding rather than the need for additional chemicals or activators. This simplicity is particularly advantageous for users who choose to apply these films themselves. Additionally, PSAs often provide repositioning and slideable technology. This allows for adjustments during installation,” notes Allen. Once installed, a PSA offers longterm adhesion. “This ensures color change films stay securely attached to the vehicle’s surface for an extended period, meeting the expectations of the automotive aftermarket market focused

companies mentioned

3

{ 12 } January 2024 | Digital Output

DO_24_1-3_ColorChangeRevFinal-SWMD.indd 12

On the topic of removability, just how long are these films slated to last for? Casarotto says longevity depends on two factors—installation process and environmental conditions. “Exposure to harsh environmental conditions, such as intense sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high levels of pollution, can impact the film’s lifespan. A well maintained and protected vehicle may have longer lasting color change film.”

Familiarize with Change

Traditional sign shops offering vehicle wraps might not be familiar with color change films, and further may not work at all within the automotive aftermarket space. However, print service providers (PSPs) should recognize the available opportunity.

According to Allen, the automotive aftermarket is a growing and dynamic market with substantial demand for vehicle customization. In providing color change films, a print provider’s product portfolio becomes diversified and allows for attracting a broader customer base.

“Venturing into the realm of color change films for the automotive aftermarket can open up multiple avenues of revenue for PSPs, positioning them favorably in a niche, yet growing market segment,” suggests Casarotto. Color change films help a print shop differentiate itself from the competition. “High-quality materials, expert installation, and a reputation for excellence can set a shop apart, attracting more customers and building a strong brand identity,” says Allen.

4 Allen cautions that color change films do require specialized skills and expertise to install correctly. That being said, in his experience, consumers are willing to pay for professional installation by certified staff. When the job is done correctly, repeat business is earned. “Customer retention can lead to a steady stream of guaranteed revenue in the future,” adds Allen.

Upward Trajectory

In summary, “catering to the automotive aftermarket with color change films can be profitable for print shops due to market

growth, high profit margins, repeat business, cross-selling opportunities, and the ability to stand out in a competitive landscape,” notes Allen.

“The demand for vinyl films, particularly color change films, in the automotive aftermarket is driven by a combination of economic, aesthetic, and practical

factors. As techniques improve and new styles emerge, this segment is expected to continue its upward trajectory,” foresees Casarotto. D

INSTALLER NETWORKS Finding a professional installer is as simple as reaching out to automative aftermarket businesses, restyling wrap shops, and professional wrap installers. Ryan Allen, regional technical specialist, North America, Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions, says interested parties looking for their car to be wrapped tend to find installers via Google search and social media. “Wrap shops and installers have an active and significant presence on social media channels, especially Instagram and Facebook.” Media vendors provide reputable installer networks as well. This allows

consumers as well as print service providers an opportunity to work with vetted professionals. EVOLV just launched the EVOLV PRO DEALER program. It offers comprehensive training that covers not only the installation process but also how to effectively present and sell EVOLV products. “This training helps our dealers become experts in both the technical and customer-facing aspects of their work. And print providers can tap into a ready-made, highly competent network of experts who are equipped to deliver exceptional results,” explains Mattia Casarotto, area manager, EVOLV.

Direct access is available on the EVOLV website, theevolv.com. Avery Dennison offers a Certified Installer Network. “Those part of the network are shops or installers that have been through our wrap training classes, passed both a written and certified exam created in partnership with Justin Pate and the Avery Dennison Training team. The network is often shared with inquiring customers and distributors meeting shops and consumers looking for quality work,” states Allen. It can be accessed under the resources page at graphics.averydennison.com.

oll-to-roll (R2R) equipment is well suited to a range of applications. However, print service providers (PSPs) have options when it comes to technology. This article looks specifically at the current and future role of UV R2R wide format printers. UV offers time savings due to the fast curing of the ink and elimination of degassing. It also offers durability.

Left to right) The entry-level Mimaki UJV100-160Plus UV LED roll-based printer offers multi-layer printing, reduces running costs through lower energy usage, features application expansion capabilities, and improves operational efficiency. The Durst P5 350 HSR is a high-speed, 3.5-meter R2R UV LED printer that reaches speeds of up to 7,212 square feet per hour for unattended production.

“The primary applications we see continue to be signage and graphics for point of purchase (POP) displays, event signage, exhibit graphics, window clings, decals, labels, vehicle wraps, day/night graphics, and floor graphics,” says Josh Hope, senior manager, segment marketing, Mimaki USA, Inc. Larry D’Amico, director of sales, large format print and fabric, Durst US, sees a growing, general demand for wallcoverings and home decoration.

Making Way for the New

As older systems in the market are retired in favor of new technology, is UV an ideal replacement?

UV technology in wide format printing is solidly popular because of its versatility, says Hope. For example, the Mimaki UCJV330 Series prints on a variety of media including translucent, transparent, white, or colored base media; PET, polyurethane, and other resin films; cloth; and paper—including uncoated paper. “In our experience, customers that own legacy models trade up to newer models with higher productivity as they appreciate the quick-cure capability and familiar workflow of UV printing.” John Ingraham, senior marketing specialist, large format printing solutions, Canon USA, Inc., says UVgel printing technology continues to emerge as a replacement for current eco-solvent, resin, and traditional UV printers. “Its versatility in handling various media types without the need for lamination and without distorting the media, along with the introduction of white ink, serve

companies mentioned INFO# COMPANY 290 Canon USA, Inc.

as compelling reasons for the widespread adoption of this innovative printing technology.”

Overall, the replacement of older machines with newer UV systems depends on the individual company. “First of all, you need growth to justify an upgrade. If you have that then there can be a very strong return on investment (ROI) with new equipment. You can’t overlook power reduction and reduced purge rates as a part of the ROI associated with new equipment,” suggests D’Amico.

Advancements

Several manufacturers introduced major product advancements in the UV R2R wide format printing segment in the past 12 months. For example, the Canon Colorado M-series printers now print with white UVgel ink and on clear media, says Ingraham. He continues to notice a larger adoption of Canon Colorado printers, especially for customers

Further, Ingraham points out that the Colorado’s FLXfinish+ technology is capable of printing in matte, gloss, or a blend of both in a single print run—along with the addition of white ink, which enables the creation of captivating graphics for applications like wallcoverings, advertising, and commercial artwork.

The demand for white and frosted privacy screen graphics on glass is on the rise, presenting a new opportunity as customers shift away from cut vinyl or direct-to-glass print methods. Ingraham says the Colorado’s white ink, with the capability to apply up to five layers of white, offers the flexibility to achieve varying levels of opacity and makes it well suited for this application.

Advancements are generally more speed and quality, offers D’Amico of Durst’s product line. “In addition, we have looked beyond those basic improvements and tried to address the efficiency of the entire workflow around R2R printing. An enhancement like a quick changeover to mesh printing is an example.” As we move forward, D’Amico predicts advancements

1) Roland’s new LG Series and MG Series UV printer/cutters are built on the TrueVIS wide format platform. 2) With the introduction of the newest Colorado M-series, equipped with UVgel white ink, users can print up to five layers without removing and reinstalling printheads or agitating white ink bags.

to continue down the same path bringing more speed and quality along with workflow efficiencies.

When asked if this is inline with industry trends, D’Amico doesn’t see Durst’s competitors looking to improve the overall workflow, but focused on a reduced price point and more OEM manufacturing.

Mimaki recently introduced two models in the UV roll-based space for signage and graphics. The first is the UCJV330 Series of cut-andprint UV LED roll-based printers, which builds on popular Mimaki models with improved productivity and image quality as well as ink options that expand the production of high-value applications. The second is the entrylevel UJV100-160Plus UV LED roll-based printer, which offers multi-layer printing, reduced running costs through lower energy usage, features application expansion capabilities, and improves operational efficiency. While Mimaki does not comment on unreleased products, Hope says the company continues to innovate to provide “something new, something different” to the markets it serves.

Roland DGA Corporation introduced the TrueVIS LG Series and MG Series UV printer/cutters in January 2023 as part of its expanded TrueVIS product family. “These UV inkjets feature several advancements that allow for optimum productivity, greater versatility, improved image quality, increased ease of use, and cost efficiency,” says Jay Roberts, product manager, Roland. digitaloutput.net

12/13/23 9:49 PM

The professional-level LG Series models—LG-640, LG-540, and LG-300—feature two staggered printheads, higher print speeds of up to 343 square feet per hour in draft mode, wide gamut ECO-UV EUV5 inks with new orange and red options, new UV lamps for more efficient curing, and a newly designed take-up system. The MG Series models, which Roberts feels are ideal for those just starting out or smaller shops growing their business, combine UV image quality, wide gamut ECO-UV EUV inks, and special effects capabilities with user friendliness, efficiency, and reliability.

Roberts expects to add accessories that make the TrueVIS LG Series UV printer/cutters even more productive. “Among those will be rigid media and film take-up attachments to increase the production of sheeted material and thin film.”

productivity plus features that improve workflow,” he says.

The modular design of the Colorado M-series allows PSPs to begin at a more cost-effective entry point and upgrade as business grows. “As a result, MSRP varies depending on the configuration,” states Ingraham. Roland TrueVIS LG Series and MG Series UV printer/cutters are competitively priced, according to Roberts. The LG-640 has an MSRP of $27,995, while the LG-540 and LG-300 are priced at $25,995 and $21,495, respectively.

Roland MG Series models are UV printer/cutters with entry-level pricing designed to be within reach of newer and smaller shops with limited budgets. The MG-640

material size of 48 inches is attractive,” comments Roberts.

Several width options are popular for R2R UV printer series.

Common Widths

Roland’s most productive UV printer/cutters are the 54-inch models. “The primary reason being that there is more media produced for that size. Also, the

Hope says the majority of Mimaki UV LED roll-based printers are shipped as 64-inch models.

Advancements in UV R2R printers are well suited for a range of applications, from signage to exhibit graphics. D

Pricing Considerations

Investment costs in the latest UV R2R printers vary, with some features packing a punch in terms of value and price. In this category Durst printers range from $500,000 to $1,000,000, says D’Amico, adding that the premiums are “basically for print speed and format.”

Hope estimates the price range in the U.S. for these devices is approximately $18,000 for an entry-level model to $63,000 for a 3.2-meter production model. “Width is also a consideration— the wider the printer, the higher the price. In addition to width, higher priced models offer higher digitaloutput.net

Customized Automated Finishing Tables by Melissa Donovan

ustomization is common for finishing tables—there are endless combinations when it comes to table size, tooling, and media handling. For example, one vendor may offer ten distinct configurations based on five standard cutting table widths, while another allows customers to personalize length with table extensions. Optional features include roll-off, sheetfed systems, full conveyors, and various tool heads that meet unique cutting demands. digitaloutput.net

DO_24_1-1_FinishingRevFinal-SWMD.indd 19

Print service providers (PSPs) consider customization as they look to outfit production floors with flatbed cutters and/or routers that truly meet their individualized needs. Driving this trend, the print industry’s infusion into other markets and by association the introduction of numerous applications that require digital finishing.

Driven to Succeed

Demand for customized automated finishing tables is growing.

Especially over the last ten years, notes Caroline Bell, marketing coordinator, Elitron. “Customers are more aware of the available features, and understand the benefits and savings of opting for digital, automatic finishing systems. Demand is mostly driven by the need for increased personalization and the lower job runs as a result. Time to market and just-in-time production add to the demand as customers require orders immediately.

1 In many cases there is a short turnaround, especially for web to print models. In the past, there was a long lead time to produce physical dies whereas with digital dies this is eliminated.” “The demand for automated finishing tables has increased in the last ten years due to PSPs’ needs in regards to improving productivity and the growing challenge of hiring employees,” agrees Keith Verkem, product manager, Colex Finishing, Inc. Melody Thompson, sales and marketing manager, Hasler Solutions USA, believes many factors drive the demand for customized, automated finishing tables. In addition to efficiency and productivity, she cites “reduction in labor costs

2

{ 20 } January 2024 | Digital Output

as well as other cost reductions, quality control, product differentiation, regulatory compliance—especially in label manufacturing for healthcare and food label manufacturing, environmental considerations, and market trends—personalized goods are on the rise and these finishing tables make it easy to produce one-off or shortrun jobs on the fly.”

The variety of substrates cut is another important feature, according to Christina Lefebvre, area sales manager, North America, eurolaser. “Every machine installed cannot be configured the same way because PSPs all have different needs, productivity targets, and budgets. In the past, machines were more cookie cutter, where every shop had the same

2

functions and features whether they were in the printing or automotive industry. Nowadays, equipment is tailored for each industry, with different functionalities and features—and is customized for each end user’s needs.” There is an ever-expanding range of available print substrates and thanks to convergence of the printing industry with other industries, e.g. packaging, “these all come with their own specific requirements and the ever-growing pressure to produce more, faster and cheaper. This ultimately translates into more and better automation. To some extent, all of these trends were further accelerated by the disruptions of the pandemic, causing many PSPs to pivot to other areas of application, which again required equipment that could be easily adapted as the demand for pandemicrelated products waxed and waned and supply chain issues and labor shortages arose everywhere,” shares Martin Thornton, business segment manager, Zund America, Inc.

Echoing comments from Lefebvre and Thornton about the print industry touching other industries, more so than ever before, “PSPs that have found niche products or services to produce at a high volume, usually require a customized automated finishing table. They need a dedicated machine that repeatedly cuts a specific application accurately and consistently over a long period,” says Mark de Guzman, marketing manager, Vision Engraving & Routing Systems.

Attractive to a Tee

Customization is attractive to PSPs because many cut more than one type of material, with jobs that are different sizes, dimensions, and require multiple tools to achieve success. In times of market volatility and other uncertainties—combined with higher interest rates—the ability to customize cutting/finishing tables as well as modularly update that table when needs change, helps PSPs save money now as well as into future. “It ensures their initial investment in high-quality equipment will provide many years and even decades of reliable returns,” continues Thornton.

“Customizing a machine means that they have a piece of equipment tailored specifically for their needs, with options they will use, without paying for features they do not need,” says Lefebvre. It allows PSPs to work outside their comfort zone. “Customers can have a crazy idea of what they want to fabricate and the PSP can say ‘yes’ to take on the work, even digitaloutput.net

12/13/23 9:57 PM

if it falls outside their norm. Customization is important for automated finishing tables because PSPs can add new capabilities as they take on new applications. New tools are added anytime, as the PSP’s applications expand to new avenues with new materials,” explains Thompson.

“PSPs can offer a greater selection of finishing processes to their customers, and it enables them to add automation and different features when required and/or their budget allows,” shares Bell. While many finishing tables are able to cut more than one type of substrate—and this may be what makes customization so attractive—the PSP that uses its machine for one specific material and shape also benefits. “A custom finishing table provides a precision cut multiple times over a long period consistently. It is a quality many print providers are attracted to. The added customization of either a router, engraving head, or oscillating knife can tailor its capabilities to a specific use needed by the PSP,” explains de Guzman.

Custom Feature Sets

Customization involves mixing and matching cutting table widths and lengths, optional features like sheet feeders and conveyors, or various tool heads.

1) The Elitron Kombo TAV-R is fully automatic, roll in, roll out table. 2) Colex automated finishing tables are customized based on customers’ workflow, offering a variety of cutting models—width and lengths, conveyors, automatic board loaders, sorting extensions, and a variety of tools. 3) eurolaser offers many different solutions for the feeding side of its system as well as the exit side of its system.

digitaloutput.net

DO_24_1-1_FinishingRevFinal-SWMD.indd 21

Customization, according to Lefebvre, is “important to help the customer achieve their goals—not all of them cut the same materials or have the same productivity targets, or budget.”

It’s important to understand the end user’s cutting requirements when customizing a table. Asking questions is crucial to figure out the best configuration for the customer’s needs, states Lefebvre. What material are they cutting? What dimensions does this material come in? Is it in roll form or sheets? Do they cut multiple types of materials? Is it printed with graphics? Customization effects many parts of the finishing device, some of the more obvious include cutting table width and media handling to tools.

In terms of table dimensions there are many options. eurolaser for example offers ten different sizes of machines. Customers can choose the width and length that best fits their production. There are also features to ensure sheets are handled and loaded with care to avoid damage and scratching of printed boards during loading and unloading, shares Bell. Another option related to media handling is an automatic sheet turner, like the Reversa from Elitron. This is a standalone or

integrated system that turns printed sheets so that they can be cut and creased with the print side facing downwards.

For tools, customizable items include things like multiple router heads—1, 3, or 5 kW options; kiss cutting; through cutting; V-notch; and routing thick substrates like acrylic or Dibond. Even crease tools are added for folding carton and/or corrugated packaging work, cites Thompson, when discussing Hasler’s customization capabilities. Other options that fall under the heading of customization at Vision Engraving are an Auto Raster Braille inserter for creating ADA Braille Signs and a vacuum table to hold down material for easy job setup, shares de Guzman. Power is another example. “Offering customization means that the customer could choose the power strength they need by having a lower or higher wattage of a laser source. This would mean cutting through thicker materials, or increasing speed on easier to cut substrates,” explains Lefebvre. While “modularity has always been the cornerstone of Zünd digital cutting systems and includes every component— from machine size and format to tooling, automated

material handling options, and digital workflow automation, the latter is increasingly important during the past several years, with more customers looking to comprehensive digitalization to make their production more efficient, transparent, and cost effective,” adds Thornton. “PSPs request production automation software with quick response codes and material libraries to avoid operator error when selecting cut files,” shares Verkem. This is in addition to inline solutions—board loaders and inline extension tables.

Thinking of Cost

More features, higher cost. That’s the general rule of thumb for customized products, however vendors agree that the return on investment (ROI) is achieved fairly quickly if the correct configuration is built for the PSP in question. “Automated conveyor finishing tables cost more than the static models, however, Colex offers a Conveyor Ready option to static models for a minor up charge with extra components added during manufacturing so customers can upgrade to a conveyor model in the field,” explains Verkem. Another example, at eurolaser, pricing starts with a basic machine and

3

4 customers add the features they need. The more features added, the more expensive the machine.

In the case of Zünd cutting systems, each and every machine that goes to a customer is customized and/or bespoke, since all systems are configured according to individual needs. As soon as a customer places an order for a Zünd cutter, the order is assigned a serial number and the unit goes through production and final assembly according to the configuration as specified, explains Thornton.

Favoring Modularity

Customized, automated finishing tables are usually designed to be modular. Modular devices offer a host of benefits—the most notable being the ability to grow with the PSP.

refer to roll feeders and conveyor systems for more automated cutting. However, customers usually purchase the conveyor system with the machine upfront and add new tools later on when the need arises. New tooling can be added anytime in order to cut different materials,” explains Thompson. In most cases, de Guzman says modularity is ideal “as the table can be customized for different materials and application sizes making it highly versatile.”

Lefebvre provides one example of a PSP that prints on textiles, but has a precise budget and chooses a less expensive 60W laser source. Once productivity increases, eurolaser is able to upgrade that laser source to 125W to increase the speed—without having to purchase a new machine or add a second unit.

“Modular means the automated finishing table has interchangeable modules—in the Hasler cutter case, this mainly refers to the tools, however it can also

By definition, many finishing tables that tailor to individual applications and needs are to some extent modular. The real question to ask, according to Thornton, is just how modular are they? “With Zünd systems, this is true for all components, which means—with the exception of the machine

size—literally everything can be changed or added at a later date.”

“The benefits of this modularity is that the customer only has to purchase equipment that meets their immediate or most essential needs, which reduces the cost of purchase. They can adapt the system any time to accommodate changes without having to purchase another, separate system, which again saves cost; and with this adaptability, they can significantly extend the useful life and long-term ROI of the cutting system,” adds Thornton.

Another way to explain the advantages of modularity, it “protects the investment for the customer.” Verkem shares the Colex Sharpcut offers configurations that allow for easy upgrades and configuration changes if the customer’s workflow changes or if they need to pivot into a different market.

When it Isn’t a Fit

There a few scenarios where a customized finishing table would not be the right choice for a PSP.

During the exploratory period, if the PSP doesn’t see ROI over a set amount of time, de Guzman says investing in a customized automated finishing table might not be the right choice. “If print providers have a limited budget, they may opt to purchase a static model with the option to upgrade to a conveyor model in the future,” suggests Verkem.

4) Vision machines like the Vision 2550 CNC Router can run high-volume jobs requiring little or no maintenance and can be customized with an engraving head, router, or oscillating knife.

For PSPs currently outsourcing or only using a compact finishing system in house, a customized solution may not be a great fit, shares Bell.

“The only time it would make sense to go with a non-modular, non-customizable cutting system is if the customer really only has the need for a very specific application,” explains Thornton.

This could happen on either end of the production spectrum. “On the lower end, the customer may not require multiple tools or different kinds of material handling or workflow automation—and anticipates no changes in his production requirements or market demands in the foreseeable future. On the opposite end, they may be in need of a fully automated, highvolume, pallet-to-pallet digital finishing system like the recently launched Zünd Q-Line with BHS180. To benefit from this system’s speed as well as level and quality of the throughput, all components are a necessity so the modularity or customizability is limited mostly to tool options,” shares Thornton.

Factoring in Needs

Customization is a favorable feature in automated finishing tables, but a print provider must identify its current awaZnd future needs before taking advantage of the benefits.
