People make parks great!

Design & Layout: Daniel Dart (d2kcreative.com) Editor: Joe Hanning

This past April we unveiled one of Roanoke’s most epic playground areas in the Countryside and Miller Court neighborhoods. This strikingly colorful and innovative community park, playground, and greenway have numerous state-of-the-art amenities, which were designed inhouse, all to put a smile on the faces of kids and adults alike.

Roanoke Parks and Recreation publishes PLAY four times each year. It is available at the Parks and Rec Administration office, city libraries, Dicks Sporting Goods or at www.PlayRoanoke.com.

The physical amenities of this park sure are nice, but as a parks and recreation agency, we really enjoy the fact that the people who use this park have made it just as vibrant as the blues and greens painting the playground.

Throughout the winter and spring, on any given day, we saw families having picnics, fathers tossing ball with their sons and grandparents flying kites with their beloved grandkids. With that being said, we made a rather serendipitous discovery about this park. The park is just an enabler providing a place and opportunity for people to gather, laugh, run and play in the enjoyment of their fellow friends and family members.

The “Roanoke 7 Summits” is a fun play off of the international mountaineering challenge of climbing each of the seven continents highest mountains. By taking this challenge you’ll hike to the summit of seven of the Roanoke Region’s top mountain summits in a seven week span. Each summit has multiple group hike dates through City of Roanoke Parks and Recreation. These will be formally guided hikes that are not included in the Roanoke 7 Summits registration fee, but for only $6 per hike, are a great chance to get out there with an experienced hiker, meet hiking buddies, and enjoy the energy of the group effort to get to each summit. Of course you can also do each hike on your own. Your

official registration includes a t-shirt, consistent e-mail and blog posts with status updates, hiking routes, and extra motivation. And if you’re into free gear, all participants are entered into random drawings to win free giveaways throughout the 7 weeks. Check out www.roanoke7summits.com for details.
