Roanoke Parks and Recreation publishes PLAY four times each year. It is available at the Parks and Rec Administration office, city libraries, Dicks Sporting Goods or at www.PlayRoanoke.com.

As Americans, we love our holidays. Every year we decorate our houses, dress up in abnormal outfits and throw extravagant parties to celebrate our favorite traditions. Although the preparation is a lot of work, it doesn’t feel like work because the acts are fun and lively since they’re tied to holiday cheer.

ROANOKE STAR SOCCER COVER STORY

Kickin’ at countryside be conveniently connected by the greenway,” said Buschor. The inaugural kick-off for the Countryside fields took place this past December where several City staffers in conjunction with RSSC officials showed up to celebrate this next great step for the soccer community. More than 75 people were in attendance to join Mayor Bowers who led the charge and fired the inaugural shot on goal. If you’re looking to get your youngster involved in the near future, Roanoke Parks and Recreation has a full array of soccer programs. Be sure to check out the “camps” insert in this issue of Play Magazine to see the summer youth soccer camps. For additional information about soccer programs and events in Roanoke, visit PlayRoanoke.com or RoanokeStar.com.

“Our plan is to build five full-size, regulation fields that can transform into 11 junior fields.” Danny Beamer

www.PlayRoanoke.com

Not long ago the Roanoke Star Soccer Club (RSSC) began to kick around the idea (pun intended) about partnering with the City in the development of a new soccer field complex near Countryside Park just off of Ranch Road. Now that idea will be a reality, and all age groups in the Roanoke area will soon be kicking around more than ideas. Danny Beamer is the Executive Director of RSSC and is extremely pleased with his organizations new contract to build fields near Countryside Park. “Based on the number of players in the city, Roanoke definitely has a deficit of rectangular fields,” he said. In a lease agreement with the city, RSSC will construct and maintain the fields. “Our plan is to build five full-size, regulation fields that can transform into 11 junior fields,” he added. At this point the tentative date for completion is between fall of 2015 and spring of 2016. The fields will support the efforts of RSSC as well as City youth and adult leagues and tournaments. According to Steve Buschor, Director of Parks and Recreation, these new fields will add to the overall popularity of the new Countryside Park that officially opened in January of 2014. “We’ve been amazed at the amount of visitors to this park. The new soccer fields will only bring more excitement to the playground, outdoor musical trail and shelter house that already exist at this location.” Alongside those amenities, Buschor added that there is also a small section of the Lick Run Greenway that travels through the park. “The planned layout includes three fields adjacent to Ranch Road with the remaining fields alongside Highland Farm Road, and these two areas will

LICK RUN GREENWAY

LICK RUN

GREENWAY

12

SPRING 2015

Solitude in the City: Roanoke’s Lick Run Greenway IS A PLACE FOR Reflection and tranquility. There’s no doubt that the proximity and scenic nature of the Roanoke River Greenway is a definite attraction for runners, bikers and walkers, but if you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle and experience a little solitude in the city, you may want to check out the Lick Run Greenway. Our PlayRoanoke.com web site has a series of different greenway routes under the “parks & greenways” section highlighting a variety of greenway route options. I’ve personally done each of these trails and added a difficulty rating for each. Since Lick Run is so expansive, I actually broke it down into three route options, but the quiet side of Lick Run begins at Washington Park in downtown. Listed on our web site as “Route 2,” this intermediate section of the Lick Run Greenway may seem like just another trail that weaves in and out of the woods, but it reveals a big surprise at the end. Just as you were getting used to the shaded

greens creating a tunnel over the path, the greenway opens to a small grassy area and drops users at the foot of the largest hill the Lick Run has to offer. I rode this section and was certainly huffing and puffing during the ascent and even had to walk the latter half of the hill. The preceding section, starting at Washington Park, is filled with gradual inclines making it one of the more challenging routes the city has to offer. The good news is the gradual inclines get you warmed up for that notorious hill at the end. Now with all of that being said, I must tell you that there are some massive changes in store for the latter section of this greenway. When I say massive, I literally mean “large” because at the tail end of 2014, construction crews began a re-route of the greenway that will eliminate the staggering climb at the end. The new route will detour to the left just before the final ascent and parallel the highway until it eventually takes a sharp right

LICK RUN GREENWAY

BRIDGE The new alignment of Lick Run Greenway will include a separate pedestrian bridge for crossing I-581. Below the crews are hard at work. turn over route 581 via an enormous new pedestrian bridge. Lick Run Greenway will then wrap around the front of Best Buy and up Valley View Boulevard where it will funnel directly into Huff Lane Park, which is right across from the Smokey Bones restaurant on the front side of the mall. Between you and me I hear that eventually the 3.6 mile section that extends from downtown to Best Buy will connect to the one mile section in Countryside Park and extend out to Peter’s Creek Road, wow! I’ve got to be quite honest with you, the reason why this is one of my favorite sections of the greenway is simply because the grand finale of my ride ends with a cool scoop of ice cream from the Ben and Jerry’s shop inside of Valley View Mall. After all, I figure I need to add some calories after the ups and downs of the greenway.

Did you know there is a complete guide to Lick Run Greenway for everyone available at PlayRoanoke.com? It is full of natural and historic activities, facts, and maps about this section of our greenway system?

For the second year running, our parks and recreation staff will host the Off the Rails Sprint Triathlon at Fallon Park. As a precursor to larger races or an entry point for beginners, sprint triathlons are catered to all skill levels. The course consists of a short swim in the Fallon Park swimming pool followed by a 15 kilometer ride that navigates the neighborhoods and runs adjacent to the railways near Fallon. The grand finale of this race leads to an even more grand bridge crossing. The five kilometer run course is an out-and-back format on our beautiful and quiet Tinker Creek Greenway. The turnaround point is literally at the

tail end of an amazingly expansive bridge that towers over the Roanoke River. If you’ve never seen this bridge, it’s worth the 1.5 mile jaunt down the greenway to check it out. The great thing about the Off the Rails Triathlon is that once you’re done, your efforts just keep moving forward because the revenues from this race support our Play Scholarship Fund. Monies from this fund provide financial aid for eligible city youth and persons with disabilities allowing them to participate in all of our programs and activities at a discounted rate. As you ponder the option of this May 30th race, you may want to consider our Gallop for the Greenways 5k as a formidable training experience. The Gallop has been our longstanding fundraising event and all sponsorship dollars go directly to the progression of our elaborate greenway systems

TWO RACES

FUN RAISING! All proceeds from the G4G race go directly back into funding the expansion of the greenway system. here in Roanoke. In less than a decade, this single event has brought nearly $200,000 in revenues that have been poured right back into our greenways. If all goes well, we’ll surpass the overall total of a quarter-million dollars this year! This year’s Gallop will start and finish at River’s Edge Sports Complex and navigate the scenic Roanoke River Greenway down through Smith and Wasena parks. Alongside this five kilometer course, we also host a casual one mile walk and the free Fleet Feet Kids’ Fun Run. Aside from the wonderful course and cause, the Gallop is probably most known for what goes on after you cross the finish line. Featuring Roanoke’s most entertaining post-race party, this year’s Gallop will rock the night away with a live band, food trucks and your favorite adult beverages. Without a doubt, as a parks and recreation agency, we’re certainly living up to our “we’ll move you” tagline. CARVIN’ NEW TRAILS

Carvin’ new

trails

28 SPRING 2015

Carvins Cove is the second largest municipal park in the country and our largest park in the City of Roanoke. In 2010, a master plan was set forth to build almost 40 miles of new trail by 2020. Now, 5 years into the plan, Roanoke Parks and Recreation has worked with several volunteer groups to make this plan a reality. In 2014, three new trails opened at Carvins Cove. The first is the Bennett Springs Loop, a beginner-friendly trail that is a one mile loop adjacent to the Bennett Springs parking lot. This trail has a wide trail tread that is ideal for first time hikers or mountain bikers and especially great for kids. It takes you on a journey through a pine and hardwood mixed forest with a gentle climb and a fun descent near a creek. This trail was constructed by Pathfinders for Greenways and volunteers from their Mid Week Crew. The same work crew was also busy creating a tributary off of the beginner trail that is anything but beginner friendly. Rattlin’ Run is a highly technical “black diamond,” or expert, trail connects the new Bennett Springs Loop trail to Songbird

and give advanced riders and hikers a run for their money. The terrain Rattlin’ Run navigates is some of the most challenging at Carvins Cove with many spots requiring technical rock work skills. Without a doubt, the effort is worth the reward because Rattlin’ Run offers the best peak view in the entire park and also serves as a secondary pathway to access the lower trails that reside deeper in the system. Due to the technical rock features of this trail, it is not recommended for horses, but trail runners will love the tap dancing and side stepping routes that navigate the multiple rock gardens. And a word of advice, watch for rattlesnakes in the summer that have given the trail its namesake! For a more moderate challenge, outdoor enthusiasts will be happy to test the newest intermediate or “blue square” addition. The Lakeside Trail connects the end of Horsepen and Gauntlet Trails to the bottom of the steepest section of Hemlock Tunnel and allows for some great hiking and biking loops off of

CARVIN’ NEW TRAILS

THANKS! Most of the projects and trails are completed by a dedicated group of volunteers that work tirelessly to bring all of us new trails to enjoy. the newly refurbished Timberview Road parking lot. This trail winds almost four miles as it travels near the reservoir, through gullies, past creeks and along ridges for some of the best open water views of Carvins Cove. This trail also allows for some great 15+ mile loops on a mountain bike and was constructed by volunteers from the Roanoke International Mountain Biking Association (RIMBA). Some other trails in the works are a freeride/jump line on the old section of the Gauntlet that is currently being built by volunteers from Blue Ridge Gravity. Appropriately named Rock N Roll, this flow trail will connect Arrowhead to Schoolhouse, and is being constructed by volunteers from the Pathfinders for Greenways Weekend Crew. Aside from the addition of new trails, crews are also making improvements to the Hotel and Horsepens Trail with a new bridge and armoring projects. Despite the fact that lugging and moving stonework is a very difficult chore, the bridge work and armoring projects will help to cure issues with soggy areas and creek bed crossings allowing hikers, bikers and horseback riders to pass through the Cove’s trails with little or no impact to the inherent trail.
