“President Wilmouth approaches each day with a determined pursuit of excellence for RMC. His passion for the institution and its traditions is extraordinary, and his efforts are being realized in the form of increased enrollment, steadily improving retention, and the beginning of a major capital project that will serve Rocky students for decades to come.” —Rod Kastelitz, Chairman of the RMC Board

From the President

During another groundbreaking year, I am immensely grateful to you, our alumni, faculty, staff, students, and community of Rocky Mountain College. This year RMC has seen a strong commitment shared by each of you, and because of that, the College is flourishing—new and returning students continue to enroll in record numbers, and we are seeing higher retention and graduation rates. I am also excited to announce that Rocky Mountain College has embarked on one of the most active periods of building and renovation in its history, which you can read about in this issue of Green & Gold ("Visualize Progress," page 28). November marked a milestone for RMC, as we announced the beginning of the public phase for the impACT Today, Transform Tomorrow capital campaign. This is one of the largest capital projects in RMC’s history and includes $15 million in renovations and additions to the Bair Science Center and $2 million in enhancements to the football stadium. For Rocky Mountain College, we embrace this opportunity for a campaign that will do more than simply reinforce RMC’s long-standing strength and traditions; it will also provide unparalleled benefits for future generations of students. This campaign reinforces a commitment to RMC’s mission to have a transformational impact in the lives of every student who walks through these doors. It has been because of alumni, parents, and friends that RMC has secured over $10 million towards the impACT campaign, and we are excited to break ground in April. Rocky Mountain College is experiencing a realization of the College’s strategic plan in a way that makes progress truly visible across campus. Our students today are the leaders of tomorrow. Thank you for being a part of the impact in their lives here at Rocky Mountain College. One of our greatest rewards is having students reflect on how you have made a difference in their lives—how you have opened doors of opportunities, educated the whole person, and helped form leaders of civility and purpose. You have and continue to make that difference in helping form the future for these students. On behalf of Rocky Mountain College, thank you for your commitment and your investment in our students. I hope that you will visit us soon so that we can show you the great strides of progress we are making. Respectfully,

Dr. Robert Wilmouth Rocky Mountain College President

Giving impACT Launch Highlights Record-Breaking Fundraiser Since its inception in 1987, the Black Tie Blue Jeans scholarship benefit has drawn record support from the Billings community each year. Rocky Mountain College’s 2015 gala was no different. Early in the evening, President Robert Wilmouth explained that RMC provides over $11 million in scholarships each year, and that “every dollar raised [goes] toward this effort, giving these talented young men and women a chance to transform their lives and communities.” Student Kobi Hudson, who is majoring in computer science, math, and physics, presented at the event and explained the importance of scholarships for students: “With the help and support of Rocky, I have been able to work on cutting-edge technology that is in orbit right now, develop an experiment that will be on the International Space Station, and sign my name on one of the world’s first self-driving cars.” Throughout the night, donors were given the opportunity to support Rocky students through a variety of live and silent auctions, as well as engaging raffles, including Heads or Tails (with comical coin flips provided by auctioneer Mert 6 Rocky Mountain College

1 Musser and Siri) and the Diamond Champagne Toast. Donors even took a turn at playing auctioneer, with a representative of each table leading the sale of centerpieces provided by Gainan’s. Also during the dinner, Vice President for Institutional Advancement Kelly Edwards announced the public launch of RMC’s impACT Today, Transform Tomorrow capital campaign. “This is a defining moment in the history of Rocky Mountain College,” Edwards said. “While this campaign involves improving our facilities, this campaign is about our students and creating a better future and environment for them, the broader community, and

2 future generations.” Following the announcement, Dr. William and Merilyn Ballard were presented with the first President’s Medal for their dedication and contributions to Rocky Mountain College. Dr. Ballard is serving as chairman for the impACT campaign. (Read more about Dr. Ballard and the impACT campaign on pages 27-31.) The 2015 Black Tie Blue Jeans event raised $410,332, topping last year’s record by nearly $100,000. We hope you will join us for our next gala, which will be held on November 4. 1. Faculty Spotlight Wildenberg Keeping RMC on the Bleeding Edge

Green & Gold: What brought you to Rocky Mountain College? Andy Wildenberg: My wife is a descendent of Montana homesteaders, so we had always been interested in moving the family back to Montana. Coming to RMC was not a fast process. The computer science department was young and thriving, and it looked like a place I would really like. A few years after I had made my first inquiries, my family decided to spend a year in Billings in the hope that I could get my foot in the door. It worked.

G&G: Can you briefly explain the Urban Frontier House project and its long-term implications? AW: At its simplest, the Urban Frontier House (UFH) is an experiment to see if it is possible to have an off-grid house in the middle of the city without sacrificing affordability or modern comforts. The UFH generates its own electricity; collects, treats, and heats all of its water; and doesn’t utilize a propane tank, natural gas connection, or sewage line. It was designed carefully so that it does have toilets with water in them, a refrigerator, heated showers, and all the basics that you would expect today. The UFH uses a lot of technology and ideas on the bleeding edge: sewage treatment in the basement, ample insulation in the absence of a heating system, strategically placed skylights to allow better ventilation at night, and a DC microgrid that better matches the solar and wind power systems. At RMC, our job is to instrument the house. We are creating custom sensors that log measurements about pretty much everything about the house. This includes humidity, carbon dioxide levels, levels in the water tanks, electrical usage, weath-

er conditions, how much sunlight enters the house, etc. Each must be measured within the parameters of the project, so it can’t use a lot of power, and it can’t cost a fortune. So we are designing a pretty radical system. For example, instead of the costly normal water level sensors attached to commercial data loggers, we’re measuring with hobbyist technology: ultrasound sensors ($20) attached to Arduino microcontrollers ($10) storing the data on a single-board computer ($40). There are huge implications for both the UFH and our work instrumenting it. We will provide hard scientific data that will allow others to evaluate the success of each component of the UFH. G&G: What is the nature of the relationship between you, Rocky, and the Coder Dojo project with the local Boys & Girls Club? AW: The Coder Dojo is a place where elementary and middle school students learn how to use computers and technology to bring their own ideas to life. I first heard of Coder Dojo through a cousin who lives in Dublin. For years, I’ve been working with elementary and middle school students to gain a broader interest

faces in the crowd

Traditions

in computer science, but the Dojo idea really struck me as different and special. Instead of leading the students toward a predetermined end, we let the students develop projects and goals, and we serve as mentors. The Billings Public Library was a fantastic early supporter of the Coder Dojo, and the Dojo complemented many of their existing programs in the TECH lab for high school students. We later moved to the Yellowstone Boys & Girls Club, which had a little more capacity and a tremendous need. The students were the most motivated learners I had seen. It has been a fantastic partnership that I hope will continue for a long time. G&G: The Algae Growth And Remediation (AGAR) experiment you built with your students is now aboard the International Space Station (ISS). How did the project develop? AW: RMC took over a project originally developed by students at Billings Central Catholic High School, under the supervision of Dr. Deb Wines and NASA Hunch supervisor Dr. Flo Gold. The vision was to provide a biological system to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen for the International Space Station. In only a year, the students had developed a full prototype and was invited to send the experiment to the ISS, and the project was adopted by RMC after most of the students had graduated from BCCHS.

At this stage, the most important issues we had to address were reliability and repeatability: the old team’s lab preps were susceptible to infection, the old hardware worked inconsistently, and the sensor data errors were too significant to overlook. With a project bound for the ISS, we needed to make sure it would work perfectly the first time. After logging thousands of hours, we have replaced most of the original components and have proven the experiment is robust and repeatable. The AGAR project really is a student-run research project. They’ve developed new lab protocols, completely reworked the biology of the experiment, and handled the communication with NASA, SpaceX, and NanoRacks. To see our experiment launch from Cape Canaveral was a childhood dream come true. Unfortunately, the SpaceX rocket failed, and our experiment was lost. We were excited to get a second chance with the SpaceX launch this spring. G&G: Of all of your projects, which do you find the most rewarding? AW: The Coder Dojo. I love teaching, I love research, I love building things that have never existed before in software and hardware. It’s amazing and humbling to watch the wheels spinning in those students’ minds. They don’t know that the stuff they’re doing is supposed to be hard. They’re just doing it.

Traditions Roots of Higher Education Began in Rocky Soil The seeds of Rocky Mountain College were planted in the Montana Territory 11 years before Montana became a state. As the formation of the nation expanded with the construction of the railroad, people moved west—homes, barns, and schools were built and crops were planted. For the four months out of the year that didn’t include planting, chopping, or harvesting, the children would be in school. Enduring the rigors of frontier life and scarce resources, learning was encouraged; but the territorial settlers wanted more for their children—they wanted to form a “School of Higher Learning.” Through this vision came the formation of Montana Collegiate Institute in Deer Lodge (1878), Wesleyan College (1889), and Billings Polytechnic Institute (1908). The trailmakers of these schools created an open door to learning. As a “School of the Open Door,” they would offer a four-year program to anyone who was ambitious and willing to work—in return, those students would have enough funds to pay their way through school. Courses were designed based on the industries of the region and 10 Rocky Mountain College

1 instruction was planned to meet the need of individual students. Students, including those who were nearly penniless, could pay for their education by remunerative labor. The campuses had land allotted for pastures, gardens, and orchards to keep students employed during the summer months. Billings Polytechnic Institute was slated to open its doors in October 1909; however, construction had not been completed on time and the 100 students who had arrived by train, horse, or foot, had to spend the first semester in multiple Billings locations, including the basement of the library and the YMCA. On a dreary day in January 1910, the hay wagons were loaded

with trunks and furniture to move into the new buildings on campus. After arriving cold, tired, and hungry, the students, faculty, and staff who had trekked from downtown went to the dining hall to eat, but the food was sparse and the electricity had not yet been turned on. By candlelight, they dined together on some cold meat, boiled potatoes, beans, and doughnuts. In 1947, following hardships from the Great Depression and war, the three colleges became one, which the students named Rocky Mountain College, and the newly united school was located on the campus of Billings Polytechnic Institute. Rocky Mountain College continues to stand as a testament of

2

3 overcoming adversity in pursuit of higher learning to give future generations an open door to success. Each year, in honor of that night in January of 1910, students and alumni gather to celebrate Candlelight Dinner, now in its 108th year. The most recent was held in the Bair Family Student Center on February 4, and brought together hundreds of current and former students to share memories, accomplishments, and dreams for the future of Rocky Mountain College and beyond.

Petrino Brings New Focus to RMC Football Family Family is key to Jason Petrino, who was named as Rocky Mountain College’s 17th head football coach in January. “I want to bring my family home,” Petrino said during his on-campus public interview on January 15. Originally from Kalispell, he is very familiar with the RMC football program after spending seven years on the other side of the rivalry with Carroll College, where he was first an All-Frontier Conference defensive back and later a defensive backs coach. In his Montana homecoming, Petrino is joined by his wife, Heather, who is originally from Helena, and their children Jason (age 8), Mikaylah (6), and Patrick (4). Jason and Heather also serve

as guardians for their nephew Kruz (5) and niece Danika (2). “All my life, I have wanted to coach,” Petrino said. “I was blessed to have great examples in my father and many other successful head coaches, including Joe Glenn. I want to surround myself with coaches, staff, and players who are dedicated to creating a strong family atmosphere within the football program.” Petrino and his family come to Rocky after spending the past four years with the University of South Dakota, where Jason worked under legendary head coach Joe Glenn as the Coyotes’ defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. This past season, Coyotes’ defensive unit finished in the top third of the

Missouri Valley Football Conference for several major defensive statistical categories, including overall defense, run defense, and pass defense. “I love Jason’s enthusiasm and organization, and I am excited to have him and his family join the Rocky community,” Director of Athletics Bruce Parker said. “He comes from a great coaching pedigree.” When he took the reigns from the previous head coach, Brian Armstrong, who accepted an assistant coaching position with the Montana State University Bobcats at the end of last season, Petrino stuck to his family focus, hiring his younger brother, Jared, to be the team’s co-defensive coordinator Green & Gold 17

and special teams coordinator. Like his brother, Jared’s defensive knowledge has carried him to success at the college level. He played linebacker for the Carroll College Fighting Saints and was a member of the 2002 and 2003 NAIA National Championship teams. Jared and his wife, Alex, most recently lived in Spearfish, South Dakota, where Jared was the special teams coordinator of the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets. Their son, Drew, was born last June. “It’s pretty special when you get to work for the person you have looked up to your entire life,” Jared said of his brother. “We have always shared ideas over the phone, but now we get the opportunity to work together on a daily basis. It’s awesome.” Also joining the full-time coaching staff are Chris Stutzriem and Ethan Hutson. Stutzriem will be the Battlin’ Bears’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and Hutson will coach the offensive line and coordinate strength and conditioning. Hutson is no stranger to Rocky Mountain College. He was hired by Brian Armstrong last summer and helped the Battlin’ Bears offense as it averaged over 400 yards per game in the 2015 season. Son of Mark Hutson, assistant offensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns, Ethan played football for Ole Miss and then utilized the NCAA graduate transfer rule to play one season for Troy University. Stutzriem is a welcome new addition to RMC football. He was most recently offensive coordina6 recruiting director, and director, 18 Rocky Mountain College

tor of football operations for William Penn. Last year, he coached the top-ranking rush offense in the country, which averaged 352 yards per game. Chris also saw a great deal of success as a player; he was quarterback for the NCAA Division I programs at the University of Wyoming and Indiana State before playing his final year at Morningside College. “This is a young group, but each has played and coached at a very high level,” Parker added. “They know how to win. We are looking forward to many successful seasons of Battlin’ Bears football with Coach Petrino at the helm.”

RMC Supports Montana Students The statement “I support Montana students” has been spreading widely across college campuses in the six years since the campaign was launched by the Montana Colleges organization. During the fall term, members of RMC’s faculty and staff participated in the program that joins the College with 28 other institutions across the Big Sky State to demonstrate how past, present, and future students can reap long-term benefits from the educational systems found in their home state. RMC’s effort was pushed through the College’s recently developed Instagram account, on which several of Rocky’s most visible faculty and administrators shared their personal stories and support of Montana students. We have included some of these stories here. Before becoming RMC’s tenth president in 2013, Dr. Robert Wilmouth (photo 1) practiced as a cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgeon. He joined the College in 2008 as the director of its Master in Physician Assistant Studies Program. When asked what makes Montana students exceptional, Dr. Wilmouth replied: “They work

1 hard, they’ve got backbone, and they’re friendly.” Dan Hargrove (photo 2) is the Director of Aviation and a native Montanan. After serving 21 years as an Air Force pilot, where he had the privilege of commanding

the crews that fly the President, Vice President, and members of the President’s Cabinet for seven years, Hargrove returned home to teach the pilots of the future. “My favorite part of teaching at RMC,” he said, “is supporting future

aviation professionals as they grow in so many areas. I love hearing them in the band and choir, watching them on the football field or volleyball court, and seeing their amazing work in an art exhibit. We’re all about the education of the whole person.” Associate Academic Vice President Dr. Jennifer Bratz (photo 3) is also an assistant professor of music and academic advisor. Despite her many hats, she emphasizes her passion for working with students on an individual basis, saying, “One of my favorite parts of advising students is that I get to know them on a personal level, not just in the classroom. I get to help them find and explore their other interests.” Shelby Jo Long-Hammond (photo 4) is an associate professor of communication studies and the director of RMC Debate, which travels for debate competitions all over the world. “One of the most satisfying parts of traveling with college students is exposing them to different cultures,” Long-Hammond stated. “It’s powerful for people to see these great places, but even more powerful when our students have an opportunity to engage with other cultures. It changes perspectives and enables students to discover more about themselves.” Student Life Office Manager Teresa Rowen (photo 5) works with virtually every student on campus. “The best part of this job is the diversity of the students I interact with,” she said. “No day is the same, and there is never a dull moment.”

As Rocky’s Academic Vice President, Dr. Stephen Germic (photo 6) is involved in some of the most important decisions for the College. But his Cabinet-level position does not keep him out of the classroom, where he still teaches as a member of the English department. Why does Dr. Germic love teaching Montana students so much? “Because they are the finest students you could ever hope for,” he said unequivocally. “Serious. Hard-working. Dedicated. I love it here.” Photo 7 features RMC’s alumni director, Daniel Parod ('15), who said that he supports Montana students because "Montana sticks with you; it becomes a part of who you are. Wherever Montana students go, they carry with them the qualities of hard work, stewardship, and cooperation that characterize our community." Montana Colleges’ mission statement reads: “Together we can show Montana students the value of education and help them see the amazing support all around them as they take this journey after high school.” Rocky Mountain College is proud to be a partner in this campaign, publicly showing support through its social media accounts and the everyday practices of our faculty and staff both on campus and within the greater community. To see more ways that our faculty, staff, and students are working together to show what a Montana education can do, follow @RockyMountainCollege on Instagram.

World Traveler Finds Home in RMC

There is no single road to Rocky Mountain College. Though deeply rooted in Montana traditions, RMC draws students from all over the world, all walks of life, to study on the beautiful campus under the Rims. For Lisa Hagen, who is now completing her first year in the Master in Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) program, the road to Rocky took her from home in Minnesota through England, New Zealand, Nepal, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Alaska, with various stops in Montana along the way. What makes Hagen special, though, is not where she has been; it’s what she was doing in each of these places, and how those experiences led her to a career in medical care.

Hagen received her undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where, during her freshman year, she was a member of the Bulldog women’s hockey team that captured the NCAA Division I National Championship in 2003, earning a trip to the White House. Hagen’s first ventures into Montana came shortly after her 2006 graduation from UMD, when she took a job as a rafting guide in Gardiner, Montana. She then took her love of the outdoors to various locations in New Zealand on a one-year work permit. One of these endeavors was working at a whitewater kayak company in exchange for building her own whitewater kayak.

In 2007, she obtained her wilderness emergency medical technician license in Missoula. This was her first step down the path toward a career as a physician's assistant. Hagen spent the next few years in a number of roles, working four summers as a rafting guide at Denali and Wrangell-St. Elias National Parks in Alaska; as well as ski patrol in Philipsburg, Montana; Telluride, Colorado; Park City, Utah; and most recently in Big Sky, Montana. "I was once the first responder to an accident involving a teenage boy that resulted in quadriplegia," Hagen said. "I was the person that his parents were leaning on as we watched the air ambulance fly away from the mountain; they were looking to me as they attempted to comprehend the immense change that had occurred in a matter of seconds." “This was a defining insight into the impact a medical practitioner could have and helped shape my desire to further my medical training, she added. Hagen visited Mount Everest base camp twice in a medically-focused capacity, her first trip in 2008, and her second in the spring 2015. The latter was part of an effort led by the Everest Base Camp ER to help establish a radio and communications system for emergency response at the base camp of the world’s highest peak. Knowing her long-term plans to become a physician assistant, Hagen returned to Montana, where she completed prerequisite coursework at Montana State University while working on the surgical floor of Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. Shortly after her latest return from Nepal, Hagen

joined Rocky’s MPAS program in the summer of 2015 with the help of prestigious grants from the American Association of University Women and P.E.O. International. Hagen cites the MPAS program’s faculty as key in her decision to begin attending RMC last summer: “The faculty is extremely passionate about teaching the art of medicine and developing students who are both knowledgeable and compassionate.” “Lisa is an outstanding individual who truly encompasses the mission of our program,” said MPAS Director Heather Heggem. “Whether she is taking care of a frightened seven-year-old boy in Nepal or a post-op patient in Montana, Lisa is a compassionate, dedicated provider who is striving to be a great healer. We

are so fortunate to have a class of 36 individuals, a faculty, and a staff with the same values.” “I have been lucky to experience some amazing places around the world, but the people and beauty of Montana have always held a special place in my heart,” Hagen said. “My future goal is to be an active community member who works to provide opportunities for youth to learn about and participate in careers in science and medicine.”

President’s Medal Recipient

Dr. William Ballard to Chair impACT Campaign At November’s annual Black Tie Blue Jeans scholarship benefit (BTBJ), Dr. William and Merilyn Ballard were awarded the inaugural President’s Medal for their longtime dedication to Rocky Mountain College’s mission and core values. Dr. Ballard’s relationship with RMC began in 1966, when he served as a part-time professor of geology. In 1973, when the College introduced a degree in the field, Dr. Ballard was named chairman of the geology department—a position he held through 1981. He then joined the Board of Trustees for twenty years, starting in 1985, and again from 2010 to 2015. He has held the position of chairman of the board, was awarded an honorary doctorate

from RMC in 1995, received the distinguished service award from the RMC Alumni Association in 1997, and was inducted into the College’s Hall of Fame in 1999. He and Merilyn received Rocky’s philanthropist of the year award in 2011. Continuing to improve Rocky Mountain College through his generosity, Dr. Ballard has agreed to serve as the chairman of RMC’s impACT Today, Transform Tomorrow campaign, a capital project to renovate and expand the Bair Science Center and upgrade the football stadium. Vice President for Institutional Advancement Kelly Edwards announced Dr. Ballard’s new role with the College during BTBJ, after formally announcing that the impACT

campaign was entering the public phase. The $15 million campaign is slated for completion by fall 2017. The first phase of the stadium improvements, including the installation of artificial turf on Herb Klindt Field and stadium lights to allow for the hosting of night games, is expected to be completed before the start of the 2016 season. Phase one of the science center improvements—a new lab addition, a parking lot, landscaping, and replacement of the roof—is also scheduled for completion before classes resume in August this year. Visualize Progress

“AT RMC, WE ARE COMMITTED TO CREATING A BETTER FUTURE AND A SAFE, HEALTHY, AND CIVIC-MINDED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR OUR STUDENTS AND THE BROADER COMMUNITY.” —PRESIDENT ROBERT WILMOUTH Before the start of the spring term, Rocky Mountain College President Bob Wilmouth stood in the newly completed Academic Resource Center. The furniture had just been installed, and Academic Vice President Stephen Germic was showing off the renovations to the Paul M. Adams Library that had wrapped up over winter break. "The new Academic Resource Center will allow us to expand and centralize our academic support services,” Germic said. “We will be able to increase support programming and staffing so that every student will have a greater opportunity for academic success at the College." Made possible by the support of the Charles M. Bair Family Trust, the Academic Resource

Center was designed to meet the academic needs of students outside the classroom, providing a full range of support services. Students can work with faculty and peer tutors to develop educational strategies toward achieving academic, vocational, and personal goals. State-of-the-art technology and various multimedia resources were also installed in the space to facilitate student success. “This plays a crucial role in our initiatives to improve retention and graduation rates,” added President Wilmouth. “We are now more capable than ever to provide learning support programs and self-development activities designed to boost academic performance.”

The upgrade to the Adams Library is just one of many facilities improvements recently completed or now underway at RMC. At the start of the 201516 academic year, students were welcomed to campus with a fresh new look and feel to their dining experience. As a part of its long-standing partnership with Rocky, Sodexo installed new counters, flooring, and buffet stations for salad, soups, and sandwiches. There is also a new “My Zone” allergy-free area that caters to guests with lactose, nut, and gluten allergies, as well as a Chef ’s Table, which features fresh, made-to-order entrees. "Sodexo has been a partner in providing the best possible experience for the students of Rocky Mountain College for 56 years," said Curt Boehm, general manager of Sodexo Campus Services at Rocky Mountain College. "We listened to the students and worked closely with them to create a higher quality dining and learning environment that will continue to adapt to their needs for decades to come." In addition to top-flight preparation areas, the dining hall received new furniture, including a lounge space where students can often be found watching programs such as March Madness or national news broadcasts. The Bear's Den coffee shop, which sits just outside the McDonald Commons dining hall, received matching upgrades, creating a consistency between the dining experiences. Sodexo also partnered with Starbucks to provide a variety of beverage options for students, faculty, staff, and visitors; and, most recently, a

partnership with Great American Bagel allowed for an expansion of food options available in the Bear's Den. Each space received wall graphics: McDonald Commons now features images to simulate RMC’s trademark masonry (as shown in the photos), while the Bear’s Den includes a wood pattern that boasts Rocky and Starbucks branding. However, the facilities changes that the entire campus is stirring about are a part of the impACT Today, Transform Tomorrow cap-

ital campaign. This endeavor will provide generations of students with state-of-the-art science classrooms and equipment in a new 33,000 square foot laboratory building, while concurrently updating the capabilities of RMC athletics programming through enhancements to Herb Klindt Field and the football stadium. The initial phase of the impACT campaign, which is chaired by Dr. William Ballard, “will not only aid existing science programs, but will enhance every student's educational experience

as they develop into wellrounded citizens," said President Wilmouth. With construction estimated at $8.5 million, the new three-story laboratory building is scheduled for completion by the start of classes in the fall of 2017. 19,000 square feet of the facility has already been designated for specific laboratory purposes, while the remaining 14,000 square feet will remain unfinished. "The unfinished areas will offer flexibility as the needs of the College evolve," said Vice President for Institutional Advancement Kelly Edwards. The second phase will include renovation of the existing science facility, allowing for the Master in Physician Assistant Studies program to move into the Bair Science Center. This campaign also includes significant improvements to Herb Klindt Field and the football stadium. This August, when the

7 Battlin' Bears football team hits the field, led by new head coach Jason Petrino, it will be doing so on newly-installed FieldTurf, which is more durable than the current field and will improve injury prevention. The first phase of the stadium enhancement project also includes restablization of the bowl and the installation of stadium lighting. "This gives us two things: options and opportunities," said Director of Athletics Bruce Parker. "We will be able to play night games, host tournaments and conference championships, as well as offer Friday night lights games for Billings Central Catholic High School."

"These improvements to our campus are already impacting every member of the Rocky family," President Wilmouth added. "This is all about community, and we are just getting started.

This recurring section of Green & Gold will continue to provide details on progress across campus. Look for an update and photos of the new laboratory building construction and football stadium enhancements in the next installation of “Visualize Progress this summer.

Bryce Andrews Speaks on Montana Wolf Management Entering its fourth year, the Common Read program at Rocky Mountain College is dedicated to creating a community of learning and discussion. Each year, we choose a thought-provoking book for our incoming freshmen to read and discuss inside the classroom and through a number of organized events. The experience culminates in a keynote address by the author. Last year, following programs centered around Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and Jesmyn Ward’s Salvage the Bones, the College was thrilled to incorporate a series of events and reading materials that landed close to home for many Rocky students, faculty, and 32 Rocky Mountain College

staff. Throughout the fall term, students read Bryce Andrews’ memoir Badluck Way: A Year on the Ragged Edge of the West, winner of the 2014 Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Award. “Andrews gave a great talk that addressed many of the social and ecological issues of concern to our students,” Academic Vice President Steve Germic commented after the keynote event. “Our faculty and staff were able to build a wide range of programs to supplement his book and demonstrate its importance, particularly in Montana.” Badluck Way explores Andrews' experiences as a former city kid working on the Sun Ranch in southwest Montana, an area in which many ranchers have strug-

gled to coexist with the growing wolf population. He visited several RMC classrooms during his visit and shared stories about what he learned while tracking the wolves that were attacking the ranch’s cattle, and how we can better manage the conflict between economic ambition and animal instinct. Keenan Hendrickson, a sophomore and third-generation cattle rancher from Florence, Montana, spoke highly of his one-on-one with Andrews: “He understood that it’s not always black-andwhite when dealing with wolves. I learned a lot from his book and from speaking with him, and I was glad I could provide him with my own experiences protecting my family’s business from wolves.”

A low student-faculty ratio, competitive athletic programs, and a high rate of financial support are among many qualities that attract students from all over the world to Rocky Mountain College. This academic year, 16 different countries are represented in Rocky’s student body of 1,035.

RMC offers a wide range of academic opportunities through an intellectually rigorous, yet personally supportive liberal arts education. As demonstrated by the programs listed above, our students are given hands-on learning opportunities in fields that continue to grow year after year.

Alumni Stories Building a Winning Tradition Beyond Billings Battlin’ Bears men’s soccer has enjoyed enough success that one might think it is a team with long-standing traditions that has been around for decades. Coach Richard Duffy has led the team to four conference titles—the first three as a member of the Frontier Conference, and in 2015, immediately after joining the Cascade Collegiate Conference—and berths in four NAIA National Championship Tournaments. He was also named as men's soccer coach of the year for the conference three times. However, the story of Rocky Mountain College men's soccer only began in 2009, with Coach Duffy in command, and team captain Nic Heffernan ('12) alongside him. "There are not many people that have the opportunity to build a college program from scratch,” Coach Duffy said. “Nic was part of the team that won only four games in the inaugural year of the men's soccer program. By his senior year, we qualified for our first trip to the NAIA National Tournament." Without the storied past of a 34 Rocky Mountain College

2 winning soccer team, it was other features that drew Heffernan from Brighton, England, to the college under the Rims of Billings. "I was impressed with the coaching staff and the facilities," Heffernan said. Even though the program was in its fledgling stages, he was offered a competitive scholarship to play

under Coach Duffy. Heffernan added that, while there was an immediate culture shock, he most loved "the people and the small classes. Having around fifteen students per class helped [him] concentrate and really understand the material." In his career with the Battlin'

Bears, Heffernan scored 25 goals in 58 games, with a high of 10 goals in the 13-game 2010 season. He graduated from Rocky in 2012 with a degree in physical education and exercise science, and took his expertise in the sport to Portland, Oregon. After two years developing a soccer academy that focused on one-on-one development of young athletes, Heffernan launched the Northwest Soccer Club (NSC). "I listened to the frustrations parents and athletes had with their current clubs and wanted to change that," he said. Since its 2014 inception, NSC has developed into a comprehensive program of athlete development, including assistance with college placement. "I want NSC to continue developing athletes on and off the soccer field," Heffernan added. "I want it to be a place where every athlete and family feels welcome and part of something bigger than just soccer. In many ways, I want it to be like Rocky." This focus has been very successful, and the Portland-based club expanded to Kalispell, Montana, in 2015 with the help of Heffernan's first RMC roommate,

Nate Evans ('12). NSC Montana has already established three teams and is training weekly for tournament competition. Heffernan plans to continue working with Battlin' Bears alumni as NSC prospers: "We want to give Rocky athletes an opportunity to be part of developing young, local talent, as well as gaining their coaching licenses through NSC." When Nic Heffernan came to Rocky Mountain College, he wanted to make a difference. He wanted to help build something. Since moving from Brighton, Heffernan has been a key player in the development of, and the link between, two great winning traditions. "I am a believer that you always try and leave something in better shape than when you found it," Coach Duffy added. "I have no doubt that Nic can look back at his experience here at Rocky feeling that he played a major role in the development and growth of the men's soccer program. I am excited to see that he is still involved in the game and is now helping young soccer players throughout the region."

Kehler Planted Legacy at RMC Bill Kehler, former director of Rocky Mountain College’s Paul M. Adams Library, passed away on October 26, 2015. He will be remembered for his widespread contributions to the RMC community. Kehler was named director of the library in 2006, eleven years after joining the College. He was initially hired in 1995 to implement a digital cataloging system, and he continued to work in the RMC library beyond the project’s completion until his retirement in 2013. “Students like to have a book in their hands,” Kehler once told the Billings Gazette, when discussing the shift that many school libraries have made toward increased 36 Rocky Mountain College

digital content. This philosophy led Kehler to expand the offering of physical research materials while simultaneously leading Rocky’s library into the digital age. His work gave students the ability to search the library’s catalog, read academic articles, and download electronic books from anywhere with an internet connection. Additionally, Kehler was instrumental in the establishment of Rocky’s document retention policy. In 1982, through a grant from the National Library of Medicine, Kehler worked with other regional librarians to establish the Billings Area Health Sciences Information Consortium (BAHSIC), which still functions today.

Kehler also had a lasting impact on Rocky’s focus on the natural sciences. A staunch environmentalist, he helped establish a student-driven environmental club and planted a new tree on campus each Earth Day. The Adams Library staff remembers Kehler fondly. “Bill was a mentor who helped me develop as a librarian,” said Library Director Bobbi Otte. “He was always level-headed, kind, and encouraging. He was a great colleague and friend, and I miss him every day.” Bill Kehler is pictured above with current library employees Bobbi Otte, Bethany Schatzke, and Alice O’Reilly.
