For the last few years there has been a steady decline in the number of manufactured watches and an increase in the cost of those which have already been produced. This has lead to an increased interest in “Supercomplication” watches, something which is reflected by recent results at auction, especially those at Sotheby’s. It goes without saying that record sales have been enjoyed by a Swiss watch company, namely Patek Philippe. The company was founded in 1839 and has enjoyed a worthy history. Owners of Patek Philippe watches have included the likes of Queen Victoria and Marie Curie... In 1877, Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky acquired a pocket watch with a minute repeater fashioned in the style of the one owned by Ludwig XV. In 1927 Patek Philippe created the “astronomical” pocket watch “Rasquard” for the American entrepreneur James Ward Packard. Today, this watch is now on display at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva, Switzerland. In January 1933, at the request of the American banker Henry Graves Jr., the company stopped its production of the world’s most complex pocket watches. Six years was spent developing a new model, a watch which comprised of 900 components and 24 functions... In December 1999, “The Supercomplication”, designed for Henry Graves Jr., was sold at Sotheby’s for a record-breaking $10 million making it, even today, the world’s most expensive pocket watch!...
