f asked to name their favourite coloured gemstone, most people would answer ruby, sapphire, or emerald. These gems are the most celebrated, but are they the most desirable? The beauty of a precious stone is not only in its rich colour and bright sparkle, but in its rarity and exclusivity. So let us look at a few unique gemstones. Paraiba is the most valuable stone of the of the tourmaline group. It was named after the state in Brazil where paraiba tourmaline was discovered by Heitor Barbosa at the end of the 1980s. It first came to public attention at a gemstone exhibition in Tucson, where it created a furore thanks to its impressive bright, almost neon blue-green colour. The most expensive specimen was sold at the exhibition at $3,000 per carat. Now it is impossible to find this rare tourmaline at such a price as many dream of owning it, but the gemstone is so scarce that collectors usually snatch it up before it has a chance to be set in jewellery.

Впервые самоцвет был представлен публике на выставке драгоценных камней в Таксоне, где произвел настояший фурор благодаря своему яркому, почти неоновому, сине-зеленому цвету. Самый дорогой экземпляр был продан на выставке за $3000/карат. Сейчас по такой цене параибу уже не найти, так как встречается он уж очень редко и чаще оказывается в руках коллекционеров, а не в витринах ювелирных магазинов. 4
