Myrtle Beach High School Class of 1962 Reunion Program Friday & Saturday– October 14 & 15, 2016

When old friends and classmates Come together, We return to the innocence We knew as children. Before we discovered the size of the world, Together as virgins, We discovered each other. We gave and got, kissed and cried, Fought, forgave, and danced, And then for a while, mostly, we forgot. Ambition, careers, and romance swept us away. We fathered and mothered children, Running back and forth, up and down the road, Chasing dreams and dollar bills. Some caught up with enough, Others too much to carry. Some died young. Older now And growing old, We discover a little truth: We were never so small as once we feared, Nor will we ever be as large as we hoped. The circle of life is a Ferris Wheel: Around we go, high and low, And off we get, where the ride began. Our oldest friends are here, In a carnival town, Where the sun is fun, The beach is ever ours. Virgins together, Seahawks forever, Celebrating reunions of spirit. By Bo Bryan - 4/12/14

Our time at MBHS seems like yesterday and yet so long ago. Can it really be 54 years since we graduated and departed from our Alma Mater? Memories are still so vivid, and many of us feel both joyous and melancholy when thinking about our time together in high school. Most of us had great aspirations for the future, and were able to accomplish many of our dreams. Sadly, some of our classmates had time cut short before realizing their dreams. Life in the sixties was filled with changes in the world and changes for each of us. We witnessed world-changing events from the first US “man on the moon” to much more complex space missions over the years. . Of course, there were “heavier” issues like the Vietnam War and civil rights. What about desktop computers and cell phones? It would have been hard to imagine having a cell phone with all of its capabilities when we graduated. Sweet memories center around cruising the Boulevard, eating at favorite drive-ins, and watching movies at the Rivoli. Music from the sixties brings back so many warm memories, such as The Platters and Tommy Edwards. Hopefully, you have mental pictures of your favorite places/events at the beach – the Pavilion, Sun Fun Festival, Brant’s, the Ocean Forest Hotel (location of one of our Junior-Senior Proms). Many other landmarks come to mind such as the Chapin Company, Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, and our Myrtle Beach High School building. None of these exist today and have been replaced by newer buildings and businesses. Please spend your time this weekend reconnecting with old friends, reminiscing about your special memories, becoming reacquainted with the beach and Atlantic Ocean, and planting seeds for a positive future. Some Survey’s Edited Due To Space Restraints Fondest memory: glee club and related activities Attitude is always a matter of choice. What Fills My Days Now: time with family and friends; lots of travel; church activities; gardening on our balcony & birds - feeders, houses, birdbath; swimming; volunteering Family: Daughter- Kelly Williams , 49 Single , Living in Winston Salem, NC. Son - Kevin Williams married to Jennifer, living in Greensboro, NC Step-family: Bryn & John Smallwood, Jacob & Lela Living in Connecticut Judy Curran Smallwood judygs@earthlink.net Fondest Memory: I'd have to say that my fondest memories of high school are from being in the band. Much to my mother's dismay, I hated school, so I guess she was wise to start me in band in the fourth grade! Message To The Class : Don't put off doing the things you really want to do! Write letters of love to your spouse, children, grandchildren. We are encouraged to do all sorts of things to prepare for when we are no longer here, but I don't think any of those professionally generated plans ever include leaving an actual emotional link from us to the ones we leave behind! And if you haven't read it, read Dr. Eban Alexander's book, Proof of Heaven What Fills Your Day : I like to travel, read a great deal, I also enjoy working on my family history. I spend a lot of time on Ancestry.com. Family: My daughter and her family live in Charleston. Rachel is a stay at home mom and an artist. My son in law is an architect. I have two grandchildren, a boy and a girl. Whit is 7 and lives and breathes Star Wars, Legos, and Minecraft! Flynn is 4 and loves to paint and dance! My son and daughter in law live outside of Asheville. David is an artist also and he builds prototypes My daughter in law teaches special education as a military wife and one who was active in POW MIA I've checked in from time to time to see Melvin Ludwig's Official status Arden Walker - ardenandwayne@gmail,com

Fondest Memory: Spending time on the beach with my toes in the sand and baby oil on my skin, but most of all spending time with girlfriends and "boyfriends". Message For The Class: Share yourself with others What Fills Your Day Now: Pickle ball, cards, traveling, lobbying the Virginia General Assembly to pass ERA and pulling weeds. Family: Rick, Bev,& Rich no grandchildren (I'm to young). Beverly Benton Dowdey NEED EMAIL ADDRESS

Some Survey’s Edited Due To Space Restraints Fondest Memory: Graduation night and party on the beach Message For The Class: " Life is a shipwreck, but we must not forget to sing in the lifeboats." Voltaire What Fills My Day Now: Relaxing and keeping connections with family and friends. Family: One son Charles Rhyne and one daughter Libby Qureshi 7 grandchildren: ages 5 (boy) , 7 (boy), 8 (girl), 15 (girl) , 18 (girl), 20 (girl), and 22 (boy) . One great grandson: age 3 months. Louise Copeland lcopeland@sccoast.net

Fondest Memory: Football games, basketball games and most of all the reuniting of our school. Remember when they split the north and south, I lost a lot of friends for two years. It was a great day when we were joined again. Also the friendships I made for life. Fills My Day Now king (I still am), sewing, friends, family and anything I can get into. I get together with friends as often as possible. Staying busy keeps you young. Message For The Class: Always remember your friends. They are very special. Keep in touch with your memories from the past. Sometimes your friends are as special as your family. Stay close. FAMILY: One daughter: Angela D. Brown (a breast cancer survivor). She is a half marathon runner and a very special lady. My granddaughter Olivia Hope is nineteen. My grandson James Dillon is thirteen. Olivia "Cox" Dorman Oliviambhs62@aol.com

Do any of you remember Mrs. Butler? I have no idea what became of her. I loved Mrs. Butler but she scared the bejeesus out of me. I never met a teacher with a more stern countenance. She changed my outlook on life. When I left MBHS after the 1961 school year I had no idea where life would take me. I still don't, even after muddling my way through and arriving at age nearly-72. I wound up with a family, something I never saw coming. I loved being a dad, though - still do - so I have a son, Casey (aka "Schoon", 33) who graduated from the University of California, Irvine, and then went on to law school at the University of San Diego. He is a licensed attorney here in San Diego but he - like his dad - would rather be fishing or playing baseball and softball. He's a 6'5", 210-pound specimen who is not yet married. My daughter Marielle (aka "Banjo", 30) is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of California, Riverside, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science. She went on to get her Masters in Conservation and Resource Management from Antioch University, New England. Along the way she discovered a knack for teaching and is now an Advanced Chemistry teacher at Francis Parker High School here in San Diego. She isn't married, either. Hmmm‌ I'm looking forward to another great reunion this October. All of you who attended the 50th made both of us feel welcome, and loved. I cannot thank you enough for all of that. See you soon. Lewis & Kathleen Decker threefingeredpress@gmail.com

My Fondest Memory: Too many to write about but each time I remember one, it brings a huge smile to my face and a warm feeling in my heart! Message For The Class: You are remembered as a very special part of my life. I cherish the friendships we have made, both then as well as now. What Fills My Days: family (esp. grandchildren), friends, traveling, wine tastings, reading, Family : Married for 30 years to Michel Goodrich, Jason AlFord (son) and Erin Kenny AlFord (daughter -in-law), Grandchildren Jennifer AlFord - age 10 Christopher AlFord - age 7 Jane & Michel Goodrich Need Current Photo My Fondest Memory: There are so many things it would take a book to write about them. The one thing was when I attended the first day of school our freshman year (I had only been in MB for a month) and someone came up to me and called me Babs Brown. Message For The Cass: Thank you for being a friend for all these years. All my Northern friends here in Florida do not have classmates like I have. They are so surprised that we all keep in touch with each other. What Fills My Day: I have a" husband" (who has just turned 90 & still goes fishing in his boat when he can) and he has not forgotten my name and when he is not calling me to do something I am in my sewing room playing. I do get up at 7AM almost every morning and go to the pool and hang out for an hour with a couple of my neighbors. They call us the "FLOATIES". At least we are in the pool talking. Family: Of course, I have 3 children, Russell, Cindy & Susan and 3 step children Nan, Milton and Michelle. Russell has 4 children (22 down to 2 & 2 stepchildren). He lives in Myrtle Beach and has a wrecker business (ABC Wrecker. If you need help call him.) My sister Meg and her husband Chuck live in Denton, Texas. Sharon Geyer Jacobs jsharonjake@bellsouth.net Fondest Memory: Taking ballroom dancing at Mrs. Henderson's School of Dance. I had taken ballet and tap for several years; but, in the 6th grade she had a class of ballroom dancing, boys and girls. Mrs. Henderson gave us a sweetheart's dance (Valentine's) and my first date was Ricky Johnson. Ricky and his parents came to my house and collected me for the dance. I wore a white sweater and red skirt and Ricky gave me a beautiful corsage/wristlet of red carnations. What fun we all had. Riding in the Sun Fun Parade in June with Dianne Clarke, Sherry Kole, Jane Newell and Helen Hussey. Helen wore a red evening dress, the rest of us wore bathing suits. Message For The Class: So glad we grew up when we did. Wouldn't change any of it. I thank God every day for all his many blessings. I thank the Lord Jesus Christ for Olivia Cox Dorman for all she does in getting us together and her love for all of us. Class don't forget to thank and bless God for all He has done and will do for you. Hold Him dear in your hearts always. What Fills My Day: Working part-time at Better Brands, President of the Senior Adult Ministries JOY (Just Older Youth) Fellowship at Ocean View Baptist Church. We have monthly luncheons which are catered, cost $8.00 per person, starting in September thru May. I plan, with the help of the board, day trips and week long trips. Week long trips are in the fall and sometimes in the spring Jane Herndon Zaffarano - 843-446-1210 janezaffarano@sc.rr.com

Some Survey’s Edited Due To Space Restraints

It has been wonderful that we have been able to stay connected for the past 54 years. Here's wishing everyone health and happiness in the years to come. My daughter Stephanie lives in Myrtle Beach. She is a Radiology Technician. She has a son Avery, 21 he lives in Charleston, S.C. Attended College of Charleston. She has a daughter Emily, 16 junior at St. James High School. My son Pete lives in Florence, S.C. Works for Skid Solutions Systems of Atlanta, Ga. He and his wife Amy have two daughters. Mary Hampton, 20 attends Clemson University. Elizabeth, 17 is a senior at West Florence High School. Dianne "Clark" Singleton diannecsing@aol.com Katherine : My experience with the class of 1962 was WONDERFUL, albeit brief. I moved to Myrtle Beach from Taipei, Taiwan, over the Christmas holiday (1961). I assume this is why my photo was not in the yearbook. I lived with my parents and five siblings on the Airbase. I was introduced to Ronnie on Valentine's Day by Millie Ramsey (upstairs hallway of MBHS). We were in the same home room. We became engaged a few months later. Ronnie : My fondest memories of Myrtle Beach began in 1955. My parents and I had moved from Sumter to 3rd ave North. I was just down the street from Carol and close to Jane, Diane, Beverly, Sherrie, Bobby, and Eddie. These kids formed the center of my world for many years. Eric and Hinson were there as well, we went every where . On my very first day at school, the nicest girl came up to me and extended her hand and introduced herself. That day a friendship, with Jane, was formed. There are so many great events that happened to me in MB. It's very difficult to pick but one was surely that first day in school. Another event was meeting my future wife in the school hallway. When I saw her, I told my friend Eric "there goes the girl I'm going to marry." Poor thing is still with me. The people some angels marry!! Eight great children later. Ronnie & Katherine Smith katflea@hotmail.com ronsmithut@hotmail.com

My fondness memory : Is of the two men who were my mentors thru high school. They are Coach Neal and Coach Taylor. I am the man I am today because of the guiding influence of these two men. I still stay in contact with them and see them often. Message to class: My message to the class is try to stay connected to the class of 1962. Keep us informed of your new email and physical address when it changes. Some of my closest friends are the people I went to high school with. I see them often when I am in Myrtle Beach and it seems like it was just yesterday that we were at MBHS. Mike & Glenda Styers mgstyers@gmail.com

The Class of 1962 was so blessed to grow up in a time when each succeeding generation had more financial opportunities than our parents, and we were so lucky to be in M.B., where we could get summer and holiday jobs at a very young age, earning money that would buy clothes and help us through college. Of course, eating John’s hotdogs after the games and eating Mrs. Rogers’ fried chicken dinner every Sunday, feeling like family, was super! Another fond memory in the interim has been hearing from MBHS friends that I considered long-lost to me. In fact, it was an unexpected and completely delightful telephone call from Mary Gail Matthews in the summer of 1994 which led me to plan the 33rd reunion—and eventually to give our classmate Bennett Scott a kidneyA military brat that arrived in Myrtle Beach, SC in January 1958 from Ramstein, Germany, I just assumed that everyone moved every two and a half years also. This was the first place that I would develop life-long friendships, which was something new to me. I am thankful that I still count these good people (coaches, teachers and friends) among my friends 58 years later. Larry W We moved to New Bern, a small, Colonial village, which is surrounded by two beautiful rivers, in July, 2015. We have joined The New Bern’s Newcomers and the Historical Society, we are taking our time choosing our “new family- - that group which, like the past, is the one for which we will devote so much time & caring. Susan Kearns Wadley & Larry Wadley Cell—843-267-7299 - susankw104@gmail.com

FONDEST MEMORY: There are many! One is being at the Jr. Sr. Prom in 1959. Helping to serve as a Geisha girl with Jane Herndon (dressed as the women dressed in Japan at that time), Another memory- First day Sharon and Gail Taft walked down the halls of MBHS and all the guys running into the walls looking. MESSAGE FOR THE CLASS: " Enjoy each day to the fullest and those you are with" . WHAT FILLS YOUR DAY: I have slowed down. Spend time with friends, Church, making jewelry and read each day. Stay alert for helping someone if they need help. FAMILY: I have been married to my husband Billy for 53 years. We have two sons and two grandsons. Both grandsons are in college now. We live in Cumming, Ga. Sally "Bell" Whitlow witlow@bellsouth.net 404-435-9119
