The brightest new stars in c0W1try music will bring an exciting new event to the Sun Fun Festival this year. Sawyer Brown, Aaron Tippin, Lee Roy Parnell and Joy White will pi:esent foot-stomping entertainment for the whole family at Myrtle Beach's Memorial Stadiwnjune 5 with the Sun Fun Festival "Hot Country Concert."

roud of the fact he's from Greenville, S.C., Aaron Tippin is making .. headway in the world of country music. When he was only 15, "Tip" earned his pilot's license and by age 20 he was flying with the big boys in commercial multi-engine aircraft. His career plans in aviation and his marriage deteriorated simultaneously and he began to focus his energy on country music. One of his gospel songs came across the desk of Nashville publisher, Charlie Monk, who advised Tippin to relocate to Nashville to concentrate on music. Tippin followed Monk's advice and was forced to stretch his energies into working nights at a rolling mill, writing songs by day, keeping in shape by.lifting weights and finding enough quality time to spend with his teenage daughter, Charla, whom he considers his "high command." His dedication and drive paid off however, when his debut single, "You've Got to Stand For Something (Or You'll Fall For Anything)," hit the charts in January 1991. His subsequent hits include "I Wonder Just How Far it is Over You," "She Made a Memory Out of Me", "There Ain't Nothin' Wrong With the Radio" and "My Blue Angel". .

by Donna M. Racette

ward-winning country sensation Sawyer Brown will headline the concert. Aband known as much for their high-energy stage show as for their string of Number One hits, Sawyer Brown began in 1981, when two University of Central Florida students, songwriter Mark Miller and keyboardist Gregg "Hobie" Hubbard, moved to Nashville to pursue their musical dreams. There they hooked up with bassist Jim Scholten, drummer Joe Smyth and guitarist Duncan Cameron. Short on cash, the group signed up for a spot on Star Search, hoping to win a few weekly competitions and pocket some grocery money. They brought home the first place $100,000 prize. After ten years on the road, Sawyer Brown is one of the most sought-after bands in the business. Last year they played 225 shows. Their chart-topping songs include "Step That Step," "Betty's Bein' Bad," "The Race Is On" and "The Walk."· The band recently struck gold with another Number One hit on the country charts, "All These Years." •

ee Roy Parnell bares his Texas country soul on his second album, Love Without Mercy, a collection of personal songs much admired by the public and critics. A native of Abilene, Texas, Lee Roy had his first public performance at the age of six singing "San Antonio Rose" with the legendary Bob Wills, a family friend. His debut album, Lee Roy Parnell, was released in May 1990 and includes the hit song "Oughta Be A Law." Love Without Mercy appeared last year. In addition to the title song, it features the singles "The Rock," a country song with gospel undertones, "What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am" and the autobiographical "Road Scholar," a duet with Delbert McClinton.

n her journey to Nashville, Joy White sang in church as a kid, ~ harmonized on country songs at family picnics, belted out rock 'n'roll off the ·} back of flatbed trucks and sang commercials to make a living. Born in the small farming town of Turrell, Arkansas, Joy became a professional singer in her teens and formed her own band while still in high school. She went quickly from singing commercials to singing demos in Nashville where her talent was recognized immediately. On her debut album, Between Midnight and Hindsight, she delivers an exciting new brand of country music in such songs as "Wherever You Are," "Cold Day in July" and "True Confessions". •

Jumping from aircraft 3,000 feet above spectators June 8 & 9, the U.S. Army Golden Knights will maneuver through the air at speeds reaching 180 miles per hour before deploying their parachutes and descending gently to the earth at a precisely determined spot.

.;

The Golden Knights began in 1959 and feature two demonstration teams, the Black and the Gold. They have performed parachute jumps at the Statue of Liberty, Epcot Center, Mount Rushmore and the Kennedy Space Center. Aspecial room at Fort Bragg holds their impressive medals, trophies and 12 world team titles from the U.S. National Skydiving Championships. Two civilian aerial demonstration teams, the Holiday Inn Worldwide/ Coca Cola USA Aerobatic Team and the Bud Light Team, will both participate in this year's unique show. The Holiday Inn Worldwide/Coca Cola USA Aerobatic Team, sponsored by Coastal Coca-Cola Bottling Co. and Holiday Inn Surfside Beach,

consists of four planes, two featuring the Holiday Inn Worldwide trademark and colors and two featuring the red & white Coca-Cola colors. Each pilot has at least 14 years of flying experience. The team is recognized as the world's premier civilian aerobatic team and last year performed in 25 markets in the U.S. and Canada. The Bud Light Team, sponsored by Better Brands, Inc., will feature the Bud Light Micro Jet, the world's smallest jet. It climbs at a rate of 2,000 feet per minute and at full throttle burns 44 gallons of fuel an hour. It's one of the few jet aircraft used for tail slides, a challenging and difficult maneuver. This year's Air and Space Show will also present a wide variety of military aircraft along with select civilian experimental aircraft. Some of the static displays will include a Soviet Mig 17, a B-1 bomber and numerous fighter and airlift aircraft. An added attraction will be the Myrtle Beach Air and Space Education Museum display sisted by the National Air and Space Museum, musical entertainment, flying memorabilia vendors and food booths.
