TOWN OF RIVERVIEW
Left to right: Councillor Wayne Bennett (Ward 4), Councillor Lana Hansen (Ward 1), Councillor John Coughlan (Ward 2), Mayor Ann Seamans, Councillor Jeremy Thorne (Ward 3), Councillor-at-Large Tammy Rampersaud, Councillor-at-Large Andrew J. LeBlanc and Councillor-at-Large Cecile Cassista (Deputy Mayor)
Mayor’s Message Welcome to the Fall 2016 Events & Activities Guide! Your new Riverview Town Council has been working hard over the last several months to put in motion many exciting plans and projects for 2017. Fall is the first time we will be meeting as a group to discuss the 2017 municipal budget. Your input is important to the success and enjoyment of our town. That’s why we have worked hard to improve the tools we use to communicate and engage with residents. You can find updates following the budget deliberations and send us your feedback on where you think investments should be made in 2017 at www.townofriverview.ca/budget. Although it seems far away now, I also want to tell you about the new location for the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. After many years at Riverview Town Hall, we are bringing the tree lighting back to the downtown, where guests will – if Mother Nature plays nicely – be able to stroll along the Riverfront Trail, enjoying holiday music, hot chocolate and treats. Seeing the joy on little faces as the tree sparkles to life will be even more special with the surprises we have lined up at the Fundy Chocolate River Station. Now, let’s all enjoy the warm autumn weather before the snow flies! Wishing you a safe and enjoyable fall.
Ann Seamans Mayor of Riverview

HOW CAN YOU HELP IMPROVE
school traffic conditions
?
Parent drivers may unknowingly be creating dangerous traffic conditions around schools by contributing to a congested school parking lot. You can enhance traffic safety for children by respecting regulations and exercising these safety practices: NO U-TURNS AND NO BACKING UP Never make u-turns or back up a vehicle in a school zone. The maneuvers are difficult and can make it hard to see children crossing the street. PEDESTRIAN VISIBILITY Pedestrians should wear fluorescent, brightly coloured or reflective materials to be more visible to drivers. AVOID DRIVING INTO A CONGESTED PARKING LOT Leave your car at home and encourage children to walk, cycle or carpool. If you must drive your children to school, park legally on a nearby street and walk to school. Fewer cars reduce conflicts between pedestrians and vehicle traffic.
In partnership with the Frank L. Bowser School Parent Advisory Committee. Portions of this text were reproduced with permission from the City of Chilliwack.
Teach children to look left, right, and left again. Always make eye contact with drivers of approaching vehicles before crossing the road. It is important for children to learn not to assume all drivers will stop.
PREPARE FOR THE UNEXPECTED It’s difficult for children to see approaching traffic when attempting to cross the road between parked cars. Drivers should be cautious when driving as children may enter the roadway suddenly.
