LADY T-CATS. With the leadership of two senior athletes, the Lady Tigercats are looking to continually improve over the course of the season to compete at the district level. Team members and coaches this year are back row, left to right: assistant coach Bailey Weekes, Britte Harder, Ashley Boyer, Kadie Whinery, Gail Harder and head coach Sarah Mayer. Front row: Nicole Harder, Kaylee Pavone, Brittany Gordon, Jazlynn Webb and Lindsey Miller. Not pictured: Jessica Guske, Abby McGregor and Brooklynn Hostetler.

Young Tigercats team preps for net time By Katelin Davidson News Editor With 11 athletes on the roster, the LaCrosseWashtucna Lady Tigercats are gearing up for the start of volleyball season with only four athletes returning from last year’s starting lineup. Returning to lead the squad for the season are head coach Sarah Mayer and assistant coach Bailey Weekes. The team is fairly young, with the majority of the athletes being underclassmen, but with almost the entire team having previous experience on the volleyball court. The variety of talents of the athletes has Mayer believing the team will be successful this season. Since the majority of the girls did not have previous court time together, Mayer originally was nervous about the upcoming season. But once the team began practices a couple weeks ago, the nerves and uncertainty left as the

athletes immediately blended to become a solid, united team. The Lady Tigercats kicked off their season in a nonleague match against Rosalia on Sept. 10. The first game of the season is being used as a benchmark for the rest of the year, but Mayer had a few things she was hoping to see from the girls during the first outing. “I’m looking forward to watching the girls work together as a team,” Mayer said. “This is a new team. I’m looking to forward to seeing them communicate and acclimate to teamwork.” The goals for the Lady Tigercats this season is to constantly improve by focusing on the more challenging aspects of the game for the team. Mayer said serve receive has been one of the largest challenges in the past, and the majority of practices have focused on being in defensive position and transitioning to the ball. Two senior starters, Kadie Whinery and Lindsey

Miller, are leading the Lady Tigercats. Whinery serves as the Lady Tigercats’ primary middle blocker and hitter, while Miller is setter for the team. “Kadie is one of our strongest servers,” Mayer said. “She is a strong middle and has a great passing platform. She has a great personality for our team.” “Lindsey is a quiet leader, a senior and our setter,” Mayer said. “She is willing to accommodate each of our hitters and is very supportive of all of our girls.” Both of the senior athletes are returning to their starting roles, and Mayer is looking to them to lead by example and use their individual expertise to help the Lady Tigercats win matches this season. The two girls provide a strong presence at the net and play into each other’s strengths. Continued on Page 3

T’Cats Volleyball Continued from Page 2 Joining the seniors for the starting roster are Gail Harder, Britte Harder, Nicole Harder and Jessica Guske. Britte and Nicole are joining the team as freshmen, while Guske and Gail are returning starting athletes for the Lady Tigercats. Mayer said that Gail is the team’s comedian, and her naturally exuberant personality creates a determination on the court. As one of the team’s hardest workers and strongest hitters, Mayer is relying on Gail to provide some hard hits from her position on the outside, as well as providing the team with key digs during matches. Guske is playing right outside hitter for the Lady Tigercats, a perfect position for one of the left handed athletes on the team. “She loves the game. She’s passionate about volleyball,” Mayer said of Guske. “She focuses on the betterment of the team.” For the two newcomers to the starting lineup, Mayer said Britte and Nicole have great potential to be a force at the net for the team. Nicole is one of the most naturally athletic girls on the team, Mayer said, and brings a positive attitude to the team. Nicole will serve as the back-up setter for Miller, and along with a great set of hands, she is very coachable, Mayer said.

Britte, who follows in the footsteps of her sister Gail, provides a great sense of humor to the team, and has a solid approach and hit. Mayer said Britte already has her timing down, and aside from being a great hitter; she also has expert passing skills and is a hard worker. The roster is also comprised of athletes Brittany Gordon, Kaylee Pavone, Abby McGregor, Jazlynn Webb and Ashley Boyer. Brooklynn Hostetler has also signed up to join the team, but is not expected to be eligible to play until the end of September when she has accumulated enough practices. Mayer explained that while young, the majority of the athletes all have previous volleyball history and bring individual talents to the team. The only new athlete to the game is Boyer, and Mayer is excited she made the decision to step out of her comfort zone to try something new. “I’m very proud that she joined to participate in something she’d never tried,” Mayer said about Boyer. “She comes in and listens to us. And she’s always practicing.” This year, Pavone is serving as the libero for the Lady Tigercats, a position she earned for her quickness, small size and passing ability. “She has already shown the most growth,” Mayer said of Pavone. “She’s willing to try new things, and as

our libero, she’s able to read the ball well.” Gordon’s expertise is her serving, Mayer said, and she is the Lady Tigercats’ go-to server in times of need. Mayer said she is excellent at ball placement and her hard-hitting serve is hard for team’s to dig. Gordon also has experience as a setter and as one of the team’s solid diggers. Webb is also a returning athlete and Mayer said Webb constantly impresses the coaches with her desire to keep the team organized and with her own desire to become a better volleyball player. Webb is a utility player for the Lady Tigercats, serving as a swing player and playing primarily as middle. McGregor is another left-handed athlete joining the Lady Tigercats team for the first time and is expected to play in the right outside hitter position. Mayer said she really enjoys playing volleyball and is always eager to get the ball, bringing enthusiasm to the court, as well as being very communicative. The athletes complement each other well, Mayer explained, and the strengths of them as individuals have combined well to create a strong foundation for the team. “One of the things about this team is they’re already a team,” Mayer said. “They’re pretty much a unit already, even though the haven’t all worked together before.”

Lady Broncos’ maturity should deliver improved volleyball season By Stephen McFadden Publisher With brand new uniforms and a wealth of varsity experience, the LRS Lady Broncos are expected to enjoy a productive and fruitful volleyball season. Head coach Cari Galbreath admits to having high expectations and ties them directly to the experience level of the team’s core of eight returning players. “This year I think we should be going to state,” she said. “Last year we could have, should have. We were just on the brink. I think it’s going to take more maturity and I need my players to stay healthy.” The eight members of the varsity roster will have support from up to four additional “swing” players, moving up from the junior varsity ranks. While Galbreath has tentatively identified those players, she is waiting until this week’s action plays out to make a determination who will fit best with the varsity. There are 15 players on the combined junior varsity and C squad ranks. Janet Bennett is coaching both teams. Galbreath, due to start maternity leave this week, will leave the varsity team in good hands while she is out. Former head coach Kathy McAnally has been working with her during practices and will coach the team in Galbreath’s absence. The crew launched their court season on Tuesday

during a Jamboree in Odessa. They will host Columbia Burbank tonight, Thursday, and then welcome several teams for the Bronco Invite on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. Prior to any court competition, Galbreath has been working to bring volleyball to the forefront of her players’ minds. “They haven’t played volleyball for months and months,” she said. “There is a lot of freshening up we need to tackle. It’s early and I’m still trying to move people around to see which situation will make our team the most successful.” While the workouts are aimed at conditioning, perfecting fundamentals and developing a game plan, Galbreath said things look good. “Overall I think we have started off looking better than we did last year, just in their skills and a little more maturity in game situations,” she said. The eight core players for the season are Dalyn Killian, Mallory Kessler, Elizabeth Schofstoll, Soraida Chavez, Maya Wahl, Sydney Nelson, Jana Mattox and Jenna Bennett. Killian will return to her role as a middle hitter. She is currently recovering from an ankle injury, having aggravated a similar injury from the start of last season. “She will play middle hitter mainly because of her height and her blocking abilities,” Galbreath said. “I think this year she will be more of a force offensively, too.”

Kessler is the other prime middle hitter. “She has pretty good blocking ability and jumps great this year,” Galbreath said. “Her timing offensively will be better from having experience from last year. I think she will be a fun one for people to watch.” Schofstoll provides reliability and great communication. “She will probably play outside hitter where she has experience at that position,” Galbreath said. “She has typically been more of a reliable player for us, consistent, and she’s a great voice on the court too.” Chavez is the only player who wasn’t on the varsity roster last year. She played volleyball two years ago and chose to return this season. “She has surprised us how quickly she is catching on to the game again,” Galbreath said. “She will play outside or maybe defensive specialist.” Wahl comes in as an outside hitter. “She will play middle while Dalyn is out,” Galbreath said. “She is versatile, very active and has good energy.” Nelson will play the right side and serve as a setter. “She is a smart player on the court and she has great hands and she’s a good blocker,” Galbreath said. Mattox is a defensive specialist and a libero if the team opts to use the libero role. Continued on Page 6

“She is getting better at reading on defense and anticipating and that’s good for us,” Galbreath said. Bennett rounds out the top eight roster as a setter. Galbreath said Bennett is “pretty athletic, very agile and a smart player.” The Broncos will need to bring their “A” game in the Northeast 2B League as Colfax looks to continue its consistent power as a presence on top of the league standings. Reardan’s championship roster was

dessimated by graduation but Galbreath expects them to be competitive. Northwest Christian will likely bring one of the other top contenders to the court. “I am hopeful that we finish higher than we did last year,” Galbreath said. She expects to have great support from the junior varsity ranks as that roster has a number of players with potential. “I am excited to see some of the swing players and freshmen once they get good skills down,” she said. “They are athletic and there is a lot of potential in them.”

T-CATS. Under the leadership of head coach Justin Ziebell, the Tigercats football team is planning on continuing the school’s strong history of success in eight-man football. The team of 21 athletes are, back row, left to right; assistant coach Seth Weekes, Joey Guske, Jason Wigen, Chance Rice, Jacob Johnson, Cole Evans, Stephen Erickson, Logan Miller, Weston Miller, SeungBum Seo, Bo Rice and head coach Justin Ziebell. Tigercats take the field with 21 athletes By Katelin Davidson News Editor The Tigercats may be small in size this year, but not in numbers or heart. With a roster of 21 athletes, the LaCrosseWashtucna/Kahlotus team is prepped and ready for a new season under a new coach. Justin Ziebell has filled the position of head coach for the Tigercats and is joined by assistant coach Seth Weekes. Ziebell served as assistant coach for Jeff Nelson during last year’s gridiron season. The team is comprised primarily of upperclassmen, even after the Tigercats graduated eight starting athletes from last season. With only six underclassmen on the roster, the LWK team is filled with athletes who have playing time for the Tigercats. The Tigercats played their season opening game on Friday in Washtucna against Wilbur-Creston, and faced an early loss to the Wildcats. The first game loss did not weaken the spirits of the team, but rather helped strengthen the areas the athletes and coaches need to focus on for the remainder of the season. Ziebell said the focus for the Tigercats is going back to basics and learning to focus on the fundamentals of the game. The biggest detriment to the team is the mental mistakes, Ziebell said, and the team is working to ensure the mistakes don’t continue on throughout the season.

With only five starting varsity athletes returning to the field this year, it is a rebuilding year for the Tigercats, but for what they’re lacking in varsity experience, the team makes up for in heart, Ziebell explained. The Tigercats are led by a solid group of seniors who have stepped up to led the team both on and off the field. Returning in the position as quarterback is Joey Guske, who started in the position for the Tigercats last year. “He’s (Guske) super smart with the ball,” Ziebell said. “He’s an excellent passer and we need to incorporate that more in to the game … He’s just a great overall athlete.” Aside from starting in the QB position, Guske is also playing safety for the Tigercats. Ziebell said Guske wanted the opportunity to play both sides of the field his senior year, and as one of the team’s most confident and successful tacklers, Ziebell agreed to let him play defense as well. Joining Guske in the starting ranks is senior Bo Rice, the Tigercats’ leading tackler last season. Bo is returning as one of the team’s hardest hitters as linebacker and as the team’s fullback. “He’s tough, he hits the hole really hard and he knows the offense really well,” Ziebell said of Bo. “He’s a smart kid.” Continued on Page 8

SEASON OPENER. During the season opening game, Tigercat Chance Rice runs the ball on a hand-off from Tigercats’ quarterback Joey Guske. The non-league game resulted in a 58-16 loss for the Tigercats against Wilbur-Creston, but served as a benchmark for the season. The team is focusing on fundamentals and eliminating mental mistakes during the upcoming games.

T’Cats’ Goal: Steady improvement on gridiron Continued from Page 7 Stepping into the position of tailback is senior Stephen Erickson, who shows potential to be one of the team’s greatest assets. Erickson had limited playing time last season due to a knee injury, and for playing his first full year of football, Ziebell expects to see great things from him throughout the season on the offensive and defensive sides. “He finds holes in the defense, he follows the blocking,” Ziebell said. “He has outstanding lateral speed; he’s really quick with the ball and stays on his feet.” The senior leadership continues with Graham BeDell, who had been slated to play in the tight end position, but suffered an early season injury that will keep him on the sidelines for at least a few games. Ziebell said BeDell is one of the fastest athletes on the team and is probably the hardest hitter, even though he is one of the smaller athletes on the team. Returning to the starting lineup is Jason Wigen, a junior athlete who is playing center for the Tigercats this season. Wigen stepped up to play in varsity games last year, and brings experience that is key for the success of

the team, Ziebell explained. “He’s super smart; he knows everybody’s job on the front five,” Ziebell said. “He’s definitely the leader on our line. He’s real smart; really good at reading at the defensive end spot.” Starting in the team’s left guard position is Jacob Johnson, a junior athlete who brings expertise to the line that is crucial to the Tigercats’ success. “He’s another one that knows exactly what he’s doing on the field at the line position. He’s really quick,” Ziebell said. “He’s a good lead blocker in that spot.” Providing the size for the team is Logan Miller, the only athlete on the Tigercats roster weighing in over 200 pounds. While his size is important to have on the field, Ziebell is most impressed by his ability to adapt and improve quickly during a game. With limited varsity experience, Ziebell said Miller improved drastically in the first half during the Wilbur-Creston match last week and provided excellent pass protection throughout the game. Two junior athletes expected to lead the Tigercats this season are Tom VanCamp and Chance Rice. VanCamp played runningback last year with the junior varsity team and has moved into the other tight end

position for the varsity team this year. “He’s another really tough kid and all he wants to do is hit people … With a little more coaching at the tight end position, I think he’s going to be a big help for us. He’s low to the ground,” Ziebell said. “He plays really low and can move a lot of big guys around.” Chance is starting as cornerback for the team and Ziebell said his largest improvement has been his drastic increase in speed and agility since last season. Ziebell said with his speed, the coaches are working with him on pass coverage, but he also is one of the team’s strongest tacklers. The team has one simple goal this season: Improvement. Ziebell said the largest benefit for the team is the constant positivity and passion each individual athlete puts into the game. The amount of heart the kids have helps to overcome difficult games because they want to keep improving and don’t focus on the negativity, Ziebell said. “We want to take it one game at a time, we need a lot more growth as a team and as coaches,” Ziebell said. “We need to take it more as a team, get all of our minds right. If we execute what we do in practices, I think we can do well.”

Broncos’ loaded with veterans By Stephen McFadden Publisher Head coach Greg Whitmore would be perfectly happy if the spotlight wasn’t on the LRS Broncos’ football program. He is also realistic, acknowledging that the defending 2B state champions are the one to beat in the Northeast 2B League and beyond. “As much as I would like to sandbag, we’re the favorites. There’s just sometimes that you are in that role. So there is a target on our back and it’s a good learning experience,” Whitmore said. “Teams are going to bring their best. Instead of just kind of denying it’s there, we are just going to talk about it a lot. Luckily I think the kids we have are a pretty mature bunch. And they are not going to feel that pressure necessarily.” Whitmore and the coaching staff are taking steps to make sure that the team doesn’t become complacent. After reviewing the film from last Friday’s jamboree, Whitmore said he plans to implement EDD — Every Day Drills — to make sure the players focus on good techniques and proper foot work. The Broncos come into the season with a roster of 36 players. It features 10 veteran seniors. Most of them have played on the varsity and started for three years. Nine more are juniors with a solid base of experience. The sophomore class is the largest contingent with 13 on the roster. “Some have been three-year starters and definitely three-year players,” Whitmore said. “Experience will not be a problem. The other thing that’s going to come into play, especially if a team is playing great against us, which I expect that to happen, I think this group won’t panic. They won’t feel the pressure they won’t do what I call ‘choke in the moment.’” The Broncos have adapted their offense to utilize the pistol, a combination of running and passing that allows on the fly decisions. Senior quarterback and last year’s 2B Player of the Year Dylan Hartz has proven he is more than capable of making quick decisions. While Whitmore says there aren’t new chapters in the playbook, he said things will evolve. “The playbook evolves as the season goes along and there’s some things we ran really well two or three years ago and we didn’t run them that well last year,” he said. “We don’t have a lot of new plays. We worked on a few things at camp that we probably would never spring on a

younger team. But with our skilled kids, especially this crew, we tried some new things at Whitworth. I can just design some new plays and it doesn’t throw them for a loop. I have a couple young lineman I have to be careful with. If I keep it simple for them, I can throw some wrinkles in the backfield because our kids are just so veteran they can figure things out.”

proven to be as knowledgeable about the game as he is instinctive and athletic. Whitmore said the team’s leader can fine tune his game, but for the most part is already doing the right things. “He can get better mentally. There were a couple of times, he had a couple bad games where he wasn’t thinking straight and didn’t feel comfortable out there so he can do that,” Whitmore said.

confidence. He makes the right decisions. He’s a leader in the classroom, a leader on the field.” Knowing this is his senior quarterback’s last year on the gridiron for the Broncos, Whitmore has taken steps to find a future quarterback. “One of our big goals at summer camp this year was ‘what do we do if we don’t have Dylan?’ Not only this year or

2013 Team Captains: Connor O’Neill, Dylan Hartz, Ryan Whitmore and Tyler Frederick The majority of names and faces on the starting roster will be familiar to fans. One new name will likely stand out on defense. Colin Sheffels of Sprague has joined the team after playing football in Cheney. Sheffels will check in as the starting middle linebacker. “If he can stay healthy he is going to fill the middle linebacker. He had a great camp. He could be one of best linebackers in league for sure. He can run and is a lot bigger than we are used to at middle linebacker. He has good instinct for the ball and runs sideline to sideline so that’s been a special treat for us to get him in.” The anchor of the team will certainly be the veteran quarterback. Hartz has

“He can become more consistent. He missed some passes that I don’t think he expected he should. So he can get his completion rate up just a little bit. There’s not a lot he can do. He just has to continue to be a leader for us.” Whitmore praised Hartz for his overall efforts on and off the field. “He has been a leader. I have known him since the third grade and I saw his leadership abilities. I think one of the best things is that he doesn’t get rattled. He has a calming effect on the team,” Whitmore said. “He has a good time, but he doesn’t get emotionally excited to a point where it’s going to effect his play. At least not in an adverse way. Dylan just has a ton of

when we know we are not going to have him next year,” Whitmore said. “Jacob Saetre is going to come in and do a good job. He will probably be the heir apparent for next year. We will get him a lot of snaps during games because he is really athletic and throws ball much better than I expected. We need to get him ready for if Dylan does have any problems.” Looking at the structure of the starting offense, the backfield will feature Cort Ruzicka as the H back. Connor O’Neill and Ryan Whitmore will serve as the inside receivers. Logan Morley, Bridger Smith and Saetre will work from the wide receiver slots. Continued on Page 13

Broncos: Defending state champions sure to provide fans with plenty of excitement Continued from Page 11 The offensive line features Tyler Frederick at left tackle and Jarradd Morley at left guard will anchor the crew. The role of center will belong to Dustin Norton and Layne Hawks. Alexis Guizar checks in at right guard and Skyler Oestreich will start at right tackle. Depth has never been a great strength for the Broncos. This season Whitmore said the team’s experience goes deeper and he has talented players who can fill in when starters need a break. “I think we are actually a little better depth wise at offensive line than we were last year,” he said. “Last year we had to move two running backs to the line. We are actually in a little bit better shape depth wise but we have to make sure they get enough snaps and are ready to go. At certain positions it’s always an issue. Luckily we have good athletes that can move around. Bridger can play just

about any position. He can actually play quarterback and H back. He can play every scheme. He is one of our utility guys we can count on a lot.” The defense is also loaded with veteran starters and solid back up. Ryan Whitmore and Frederick will take the defensive end jobs. At defensive tackle there are four names in Whitmore’s mind for the two positions including Morley, Kuest, Hawks and Norton. Sheffels owns the middle linebacker role for the start of the season. The outside linebackers will include Ruzicka, Hugh Hennings and Andrew Witt. At the corners will be O’Neill, Logan Morley, Saetre and Matt Leffel. The safety position will be handled by Smith, Hartz and O’Neill at times. During the jamboree, against a number of league opponents the Broncos looked as though they were the dominant force. Whitmore isn’t ready to claim the league championship or any other title. But he expects his team to fulfill

THREE CHEERS

FOR THE

expectations and believes the Broncos are prime to advance deep into the postseason. The league opponents to watch will be Colfax and Reardan. Colfax has implemented a new offense and is still working through that. Reardan will be physically strong. “Colfax changed their offense going to the pistol,” Whitmore said. “They like what the pistol can do. They have had a hard time defending it, even when they were a lot better than us. They think that fits them. They are well coached and will play good defense. We have them here on senior night and that will be huge.” The Indians are expected to be among the top three teams in the league. “Reardan, I think will be right there. They have some new kids in. They will be the biggest team and will have the most size in the league,” Whitmore said. “It’s going to be a real battle I think.” If there’s a dark horse or spoiler, Whitmore gives Liberty the nod. The Broncos will be short five starters when they travel there at the end of the regular

season. Those starters will be attending the National FFA Convention. “They have some athletes. It’s their senior night and last game of the season and we will be missing four or five starters. I think they can be a dark horse. They have enough athletes they can sneak up on somebody.” That said, Whitmore feels good about his team’s chances of returning to the state playoffs. “We definitely have all the tools if we stay healthy and get in shape and get these kids doing what they did last year, playing one game at a time,” he said.
