Summer Edition!! Huge hall of fame weekend with tons of Anchormen Events slated for Oct. 17, 18

1991 New England Champ Team along with 2008 NCAA Champ Michael Bonora to be inducted into the Rhode Island College Athletics Hall of Fame

What a great weekend planned at Rhode Island College for homecoming on October 17,18. Anchormen wrestling will have a strong contingent as year 4 of the 5 straight New England titles will go into the RIC Hall as a team. Just the third team ever to receive the honor in the history of the college athletic program. On top of the 1991 Anchormen, NCAA Champ, 2x All-American, and 3x Scholar All-American Michael Bonora will be inducted as well.

The induction ceremony will be held on campus at the Donovan Dining Facility and ticket information can be obtained by calling the athletic department at 401-456-8007. Be sure to make a weekend out of it. There will be a 5K to support the team at 9am on Sat., then a golf ball drop style raffle at half time of the 1pm soccer game – win $1,000, $500, or $250! Lastly the annual Anchormen wrestling golf outing will take place on Sunday the 18th at 1pm at Valley CC. Contact Jay Jones for more info on those events at jjones@ric.edu.

According to the athletic department, the 1991 team was selected based on the strong NCAA performance as 3 Anchormen earned allAmerican, Brian Allen, James Barbera, and Scott Carlsten. Greg McLaughlin was also a national qualifier. The team earned the fourth straight New England title (’92 earned a fifth). Michael Bonora led the 2008 team to another New England Championship. Bonora went 42-2 and the only losses came in the DI Midland’s tournament.

Tyler Daffinee joins the coaching staff from the perennial power Ithaca College wrestling program Tyler Daffinee joins the Rhode Island College Anchormen Wrestling Staff after being strong part of Ithaca’s coaching staff since 2012. Daffinee has worked hard on the development of Ithaca’s strong middle to upper weight group over the past couple of years. Long time Ithaca Head Coach Marty Nichols gave an excellent recommendation citing that Tyler takes initiative, has a great mindset, and is very reliable and trustworthy. Daffinee said, “I am really thankful for the opportunity; Coach has built a strong tradition here, and I am excited to be a part of it. I look forward to pushing these men to be better every day on and off the mat! Anchor Strong!” Daffinee has already been on campus meeting recruits and learning about the history of the Rhode Island College program. He has been very excited to get to work with the team and to get the Anchormen back to the nation’s elite. He is a 2007 Ithaca graduate, and a native of Binghamton, N.Y. During his collegiate career, Daffinee totaled 30 wins and wrestled in all of the upper weight classes for the Bombers.

Late summer beach day to meet wrestlers from this year’s team, alum and some from this year’s ’91 hall of fame class, families, - no pressure just literally a day at the beach!

Come to Narragansett Town Beach on Sunday August 30th to meet RIC wrestling family members from all generations.
