Attractions

Its clear throughout Grant County why Wisconsin is called Americas Dairyland. From state-of-the-art facilities to rustic countryside views, agriculture remains a staple in our past, present and future. But this corner of the Driftless Region is more than just cows and crops. Our rolling hills, blufftops and waterways have shaped the culture of Grant County for centuries. Featuring nearly 100 miles of shore along the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers, adventure awaits you with fishing, boating, camping and more. Step back in time with our variety of museums, step out to nature along our many trails, or step into our neighborhood shops to discover the treasures that are unique to Grant County.

Exploring Water & Nature

Two natural wonders create miles of scenic coastline along the edge of Grant County. The Wisconsin River to the north and the Mississippi River to the west can provide hours of entertainment while tubing, kayaking, boating, fishing or swimming. From the riverfront to the backwaters, Grant County is filled with creeks and streams too - including over 100 miles of world class trout streams. Grant County is nestled between the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway and Upper Mississippi flyway - where youre sure to find a variety of animals on the land, in the trees or across the sky.

Wyalusing State Park offers 2,700 acres of spectacular scenery overlooking where the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers converge. This park features a canoe trail, hiking, caves, bluffs, Native American burial mounds and more. Plus, Grant County is home to Nelson Dewey State Park. Just off the Great River Road outside of Cassville, it features an abundance of wildlife so you can reconnect with nature. Inland, cyclists of all skill levels can find the right path for them with more than two dozen area bike loops that comprise the 900+ mile Driftless Challenge.

The bluffs you see across Grant County - that give us such spectacular views - can be attributed to the last ice age. As glaciers flattened several parts of the Midwest some 10,000 years ago, this area was left mostly untouched. When the ice receded, the waters they unleashed carved the valleys we navigate today. The Driftless Region spans 24,000 square miles of the Upper Mississippi River Valley in parts of Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota. The hills, the waterways, and even the vegetation here make a stunning and beautiful region like nowhere else. Welcome to “the Driftless.” Used by permission of Trout Unlimited.

ATV/UTV Motorcycle Snowmobile

If you like to explore off the beaten path, then Grant County is the place for you! We’re ATV/UTV friendly and invite you to discover the hidden beauty across hundreds of miles of backroads. Your next great view is just around the corner or over the next hilltop. Plus, if you love getting on the open road with your motorcycle, Grant County’s highways and byways are your dream come true! Cruise along the coastline of the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers, or take in the rustic sites throughout rural Wisconsin. And, once the snow flies, Grant County has over 400 miles of groomed trails maintained by 11 local clubs.

Southwest Wisconsin Wine Trail

is a consortium of Wisconsin wineries that are located within the Upper Mississippi River Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area). These wineries share a passion for their craft – creating wine. They each have a story to tell. As you visit these wineries you will find that there is a common thread to each story. That thread is the challenge of making great wine from new and emerging grape varieties that are cold hardy enough to withstand the weather of the Upper Midwest. Some of these wineries make their wine using only their own grapes and others wineries don’t grow any grapes but do source from local growers. Some of them also make wines from fruit, such as cranberries, apples, cherries and currants. You can even find Mead, a wine made from honey. So take the trail that winds through the beautiful hills and valleys of Southwest Wisconsin and taste the passion and the variety for yourself. For details, search Southwest Wisconsin Wine Trail on Facebook.

History & Museums

Grant County has a deep history - literally! We’re home to the Mining and Rollo Jamison Museums in Platteville. This is your chance to go underground and tour an actual lead mine used in the 1800s. You might also notice Platteville’s giant M just to the east of town - which stands for Mining! On the surface, the railroad played a major part in developing communities around Grant County. Its history is told through the Boscobel Depot Museum and Fennimore Railway Museum. Interested in seeing how far the Ag industry has advanced? Then plan a trip Stonefield Historic Site in Cassville and visit the Wisconsin State Agricultural Museum. Or, go even further back in history, and check out the mounds built by indigenous peoples that are located along the Lower Wisconsin Riverway.

For that rainy day...

Don’t let a rainy day ruin your whole trip. We can keep your family entertained even if the weather outside has delayed some of your regularly scheduled fun. You can use this time to check out the unique specialty stores in and around the area. Or, create a learning opportunity by visiting one of Grant County’s museums. Maybe grab a bite to eat at a local tavern with your friends? Other fun activities you might consider as a family - go bowling, catch a movie or explore our community libraries. How about swinging into a coffee shop? Many offer an assortment of board games, along with aromatic blends and specialty sandwiches in a family-friendly setting. And, if its not the rain but the heat that has you looking to change your plans, we have community pools and family aquatic centers that are open to everyone!
