Filton priority status ‘safe’ but ‘Safer’ forum under threat Filton could avoid the worst of the impact of possible cuts to ‘priority neighbourhood’ funding go ahead, the group which runs community work in the town has said. But the town faces losing its Safer Stronger Group - an open forum which enables residents to prioritise problems which can be resolved by South Glos and other agencies such as the Police. Residents have been urged to respond to five major costcutting consultations being run by South Glos which include ceasing all funding for priority neighbourhood support, saving up to £121,157. But Southern Brooks, which delivers Priority Neighbourhood programmes for Filton and Patchway, said South Glos was still committed to the concept of PNs and that they (Southern Brooks) would continue to deliver. They say the cuts proposed will affect staff who do not work directly in Filton. A Priority Neighbourhood, of which there are six in S Glos Turn to Page 5

Call to cut councillor numbers by Rebecca Day A petition has been set up calling for a reduction in the amount of councillors across South Gloucestershire. It has been suggested that the number of representatives is “too high” and by reducing the amount by 25 per cent, the council could save around £200,000 a year. However, South Gloucestershire’s Labour councillors – three of whom stand in Filton – say the petition is a “phony campaign”. Set up by Bradley Stoke UKIP councillor and prospective parliamentary candidate for Filton and Bradley Stoke Ben Walker, the petition says that the council has continued to make cuts to its staff, services and community grants – but there has been no mention of reducing the number of elected councillors as a cost-saving measure. In a letter – published on Change.org – addressed to

Roger Hutchinson, Ian Scott and Adam Monk Amanda Deeks, chief executive at South Gloucestershire Council, he stated: “There can be no argument that any reduction would impact on representation for the public as a large number of councillors currently fail to work for, or effectively represent their communities, proving that the number of councillors is too high.” The Labour group is criticising UKIP for “falsely suggesting” that the council has overlooked reducing the number of councillors to make savings. They say that a budget was agreed by councillors in February 2014, which stated

that some savings would come from “a potential reduction in the number of councillors” following a boundary review, run by the Boundary Commission for England, after the next election. The proposed reduction is listed in the “cost of democracy” savings, which aims to generate £442,000. Filton councillor Adam Monk, Labour’s lead councillor on resources, said: “UKIP is misleading local people who rightly want an assurance that councillors are contributing their share to the savings. “The UKIP councillor voted for the budget package, so he either did not read his papers properly, or is deliberately misinforming people with the wording of his petition. “The process for reducing councillor numbers is very formal, and our assumption is that councillor numbers will reduce once we’ve gone through the next [boundary] review.”

For the 2013-14 financial year, the total paid to Filton’s councillors was £55,809. Filton’s three representatives – Adam Monk, Ian Scott and Roger Hutchinson – were each paid £10,943.04 for the year, with an additional £7,659.96 as a “special responsibilities allowance”. Resident Dave Mikkelson, who is among those who have signed the petition, said: “As services have reduced over a number of years I see no reason why there should not be a comparable reduction in councillors. “Having three per ward is counterproductive. What happens is the councillors who are not performing and cannot be trusted are ignored by the public. The good councillors come to the surface. Why should I afford them a good standard of living whilst mine is suffering with the withdrawal of necessary services?”

800 called for Flyer but bus stopped due to tiny numbers of passengers Less than 12 months after the Filton Flyer was launched with huge fanfare, the service has been stopped, with the service averaging just single figure passenger numbers daily. Town councillors said they believed that although there was a demand, residents had gone for so long without a service that they had established other ways of getting to the shops and other places. The service launched late last year, taking in a circuit including Southmead Hospital and Parkway Station. Low passenger numbers led to a rethink with a tighter circuit established in the Filton residential area but that still failed to make an impression and it has now been judged to be ‘financially unsustainable’. Councillor Darryl Collins told the town council: “People ought to be here in their droves complaining. “This service was well planned, there was a good consultation, people knew about it.” Councillor Keith Briffett said: “We had a big meeting, the response was terrific and we had 600/00 signatures. “I believe there had been no bus for so long that people had other ways of getting places. “I’m not suggesting the public let us down but clearly they have alternative transport.” Town councillors have been told that the service, which connected all parts of Filton, has not managed to hit passenger number targets and was to be sustainable in the long term. Residents will be able to use the Dial a Ride service Four Towns & Vale Link Community Transport. South Glos Cllr Ian Scott said: “I am pleased that the community will still benefit from the Filton Flyer as a dial ride service and as chair of the

Public Transport Forum on South Gloucestershire Council I will continue to lobby the commercial operators to redirect one of the services that run up the A38 between Filton College and Filton Church through Filton Avenue (north side) instead. “This has proved difficult in the past but now that so many bus services are running through Filton to Southmead Hospital, it makes common sense to divert at least one them through the Conygre Ward!.” The Flyer running costs and the purchase of the bus were made possible by grant money but the service had to prove it could sustain 30 passengers a day. Residents had called for a service but commercial operators were not interested in redirecting their buses because it would not be financially viable for them to do so. A steering group was set up to look at routes, fares and running costs. Eventually, a £50,000 grant was secured which paid for the bus for six months as well as maintenance and fuel costs. As it was a commercial route, the vehicle could not be driven by volunteers. A driver was provided by Severnside Transport, the charity which ran the service.

From Page 1 including Filton, is one in which “higher numbers of people don’t achieve their full potential, have poorer health outcomes, are employed in less well paid jobs and crime levels are higher.” Southern Brooks director Julie Close said: “The impact on the Priority Neighbourhood work for Filton should be minimal. “As the Community Lead Group for Filton and Patchway, Southern Brooks receives funding from the grant aid budget of South Glos which runs until March which is not affected. “What is important for Filton is that is continues to be recognised as a Priority Neighbourhood. This has resulted in the children’s centre staying open and some protection of services for young people.” Axing the Safer and Stronger Community Groups could lead to a saving of up to £115,227. Joy for Filton garden team at RHS verdict: Outstanding!

Filton Community Garden has been judged to be outstanding at the annual South West in Bloom Awards, scoring the maximum of 100 points. The assessor told the Filton team that there was nothing he could recommend which would improve the garden and described it as a ‘benchmark’. The Community Garden at Elm Park, which has been created by volunteers supported by the town council and local businesses, entered the competition in the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ category. The Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ campaign is part of the wider Britain in Bloom initiative, providing an opportunity for smaller community groups to get involved. ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ is a unique scheme for volunteer-led community gardening projects/ groups which are focused on cleaning up and greening up their local area. It is is an “inclusive, non-competitive scheme which welcomes projects/groups of all kinds”. Community garden chairman Dave Mikkelson said: “The assessment took place on the morning of Filton Festival.

“The assessor was extremely impressed by the garden and whilst he could not divulge our level award we were hopeful of the Outstanding award that we eventually received, this being the top award of the five categories. “The presentation day in Trowbridge on 18 September was very well attended, and with delegates from amongst others Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, B&NES and Wansdyke, the competition was therefore fierce. I have never seen so many mayors and mayoral chains in one location! “We were delighted when called up on the stage to receive our award. In the overall assessment which takes into account Community Participation, Environmental Responsibility and Gardening Achievement we scored a maximum 100 marks. “The assessor’s comments were that he could not recommend anything to improve the garden as most things had been covered. He considered that the garden was a benchmark for all other gardens of its type. He went onto say that we should go out to other communities and share our knowledge. “This award has really put Filton on the gardening map. We

Cycle stars pass through Filton ... in a flash!

October, 2014

Some of the world’s top cyclists raced through Filton last month on a leg of the prestigious Tour of Britain. They travelled through South Gloucestershire on Stage 4 of the race from Worcester to Bristol. The riders cycled through Charfield, Cromhall, Bagstone, Rangeworthy, Iron Acton, Frampton Cotterell, Winterbourne, Stoke Gifford and Little Stoke before arriving in Filton in mid afternoon. Crowds, including youngsters from Orchard School Bristol and St Teresa’s Primary, lined the route along to cheer on the stars including Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish. There was a growing sense of anticipation as word was received that the cyclists were on their way and they raced downn Southmead Road before turning right into Pen Park Road before making their way to the finish on The Downs. UK’s biggest free-to-watch sporting event. Rolling road closures controlled by the tour’s organisers were n place throughout the event to minimise disruption and to keep spectators safe as they try to catch a glimpse. The 2014 Friends Life Tour of Britain started on Sunday September 7 for eight days of racing. A Tour of Britain

spokesperson said: “The crowds in Bristol have been fantastic. The turn out was absolutely huge, the biggest at any of the stages of the tour so far, so that was really great to see. It was a great atmosphere.” Afterwards organisers hinted that the response meant Bristol could be in line to host more stages of the race in years to come. The Bristol stage went to Polish rider Michal Kwiatkowski.

Alley clean-up after gates installed

Filton residents rolled up their sleeves this month and joined in on a community environmental action day to tidy the local area. Volunteers joined forces to tidy the lanes around 6th, 7th and 9th Avenues, cut back overhanging bushes, brambles and hedges, and cleared rubbish littering the area.

As reported last month, the residents, aided by local PCSO Sheryl Drewitt, have managed to secure alley gates in several streets to prevent the possibility of crime. For the clear-up, South Gloucestershire Council loaned out litter pickers, bag holders, gloves and rubbish bags, and

removed the waste collected by the volunteers. Sheryl said: “It was a great opportunity to get together and meet fellow residents, to work together and take a real pride in the area we live, while celebrating that residents will finally feel safe and secure.”

Green bins made more affordable Extra measures will be introduced to ensure Filton’s green waste subscription service remains affordable for those in financial hardship, following a majority decision by South Glos councillors. A 50 per cent discount on the £36 annual charge is already available for those receiving certain benefits, but the hardship scheme will provide further support in exceptional circumstances. The opt-in service was introduced in March 2014 as part of ongoing measures to reduce South Glos council’s expenditure in line with the national austerity programme. The council says it has already reduced its spending by £43m a year and needs to save a further £36m a year by 2020. In a report to the committee, councillors were told that more than 38,000 residents have chosen to opt in to the subscription scheme.

Poor turntout for litter meeting

A special meeting of Filton Town Council to discuss litter in the town attracted just two members of the public. And councillor numbers were so low that decisions could not be made and the meeting was suspended until Tuesday, October 21 at 8pm in the badminton hall beside the Ratepayers Arms. Councillors decided to press on with the meeting on a discussion-only basis and ideas would be taken forward to the new date. Among the ideas was that an open letter could be sent to all residents urging them to be mindful of keeping the town tidy. Councillor Keith Briffett said: “We have to train people not to drop litter. “But the question is, who has

the authority to fine them when they do so.” Council chairman Rikki Teml said that when he had taken part in a litter pick he was surprised at how much mess there was. Councillor Bill Moore said that it might be possible to involve those on programmes with the probation service to get involved in picking up litter and he suggested that the town council could organise a van for larger items which could compete with South Glos. Councillor Kieran Hyde suggested an anit-litter workshop and councillors said that a poster campaign targeting fines or education could be effective. For more details on the meeting, turn to page 21. All residents are welcome to attend.

l Residents in Nutfield Grove have welcomed parking restrictions, according to South Glos councillor Ian Scott. He told the town council that it is hoped the new system will end the blight of commuter parking

which has affected residents in the street for several years now. Other measures include additional white lines to improve safety by preventing parking on bends.

The town council was praised for the work on the new playpark and the introduction of the coffee bar ... but now faces a £700 bill to replace the small trampoline just several weeks after the park opened. Councillors were told that vandals had targeted the feature and that it had been cordoned off for safety reasons. The council is now looking into funding a replacement but town clerk Lesley Reuben said that an insurance claim was not

viable due to the level of excess on the policy. Since the problem emerged, residents on social media have made calls for ‘night vision’ CCTV cameras to operate. One resident said: “(CCTV) might be worth upgrading if it doesn’t cost too much. Really think the play park along with the cafe, exercise area and the community garden is making Elm Park a “go to” park. Let’s not let a few spoil it. I for one have been very impressed!”

Roadworks postponed From Page 1 the main Filton Roundabout, has been put off from this month until next year due to a contractual dispute between the material supplier and the surfacing contractor. In a separate development, the resurfacing of Filton Avenue and introduction of speed tables will also not take place until Spring after it was realised that the jobs cannot be done together due to drainage issues. Councillor Roger Hutchinson said: “In the case of the roundabout, it appears that the contractor has informed the council that due to a technical dispute between the material supplier and the surfacing contractor, which is beyond the control of the council and has caused the work to be postponed until the spring of next year.

“On Filton Avenue, the re-surfacing and the speed tables were being done all in one but they are, in fact, two separate jobs. “It appears that there was a view by one section on the council that the resurfacing could be turned around quickly, but putting the speed tables in is going to require drainage work as well and resurfacing first would have been crazy. “Fortunately this was spotted and has now been rectified so the full job will be carried out in the spring.” Meanwhile, South Glos has begun consultation with local people on 20mph and traffic calming around Shield Road Primary, to include several streets in that area - Shields Ave, Third Avenue, Ferndale, Fourth, Tenth and Eleventh.

Helicopter ‘will get a new home’

by Rebecca Day Owners of Filton Airfield have reassured the teams behind Great Western Air Ambulance and the police helicopter that they are “committed” to helping find them a new home. Concerns were raised by the services – which are based at the airfield – after it was announced that the site was earmarked for future redevelopment. The development is to encompass thousands of new homes, a school, community centre, heritage centre and an enterprise zone set to create around 9,000 new jobs. BAE Systems Ltd – the owner – says that it is not ruling out the services remaining on site, but it may be a risk allowing the helicopters to operate from such a built-up, residential area.

The airfield sites each require 13 to 19 acres of space. A spokesperson from BAE Systems said: “We are committed to supporting the services, and will be securing a permanent home for the two services in the future.” Police and crime commissioner Sue Mountstevens told Filtonvoice: “The [police helicopter] service has been based at Filton Airfield since the early 1980s and has strong links with the area, so it is important that the airfield is fully assessed as one of the potential permanent sites. “We do, however, wish to secure the best long-term operational capabilities and the National Police Air Service – alongside the force – will be looking closely at sites beyond the former airfield boundary.”

News in brief Follow trail to find out what’s on offer

Clubs, community groups, local services and venues across Filton have teamed up to create a trail that promotes all that’s on offer to residents. The Southern Brooks Community Partnership is celebrating 25 years supporting local people and the charity is organising the Filton Activity Community Trail (FACT) on November 1 to highlight the many services available. A wide range of activities have been lined up to help showcase organisations in Filton, including yoga taster sessions, arts and crafts, a Filton Community Garden showcase, dementia awareness sessions, a World War bunker tour with Filton History Group. story time at the library, bike safety sessions with the police, a stop smoking clinic, a Silver Surfers’ computer session, a Filton quiz at the community centre, a fun session at Filton Leisure Centre and much more.

Four Towns Community Transport will be available to take people between venues and a trail map is available from Filton Library. The trail will take place from 11am-4pm on Saturday, November 1. More information is available at office@ southernbrooks.org.uk or on 01454 868 570. See poster P21

Hear from experts on art and design

Filton residents interested in design and the arts are invited to go along and meet the members of the South Gloucestershire Design and Fine Arts Society. This year the group will hear talks from experts, usually illustrated with slides, that include the History of Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey), Hans Christian Andersen, The Shakers, Art Deco Ceramics, Picasso & Cubism and David Hockney. Several visits and a study day are

being planned, too. At the next meeting on Thursday, October 16, from 7pm, Tom Denny will be talking to the group about “New Stained Glass in Ancient Buildings”. The group meets at Bradley Stoke Community School, in Fiddlers Wood Lane, and new members are always welcome – no artistic ability is necessary, just an interest in design and the arts. More information is available at www.sgdfas.org.uk, on 01454 774401 or by emailing sallykitching@googlemail.com.

Would-be foster carers not applying People living in Filton are being urged not to rule themselves out of fostering after previous campaigns revealed many thought they wouldn’t be accepted as a carer. With more than 170 children in the care of South Gloucestershire Council, the authority is appealing for more

local people to put themselves forward. Many would-be foster carers have said they believed their age, the size of their house and many other circumstances would mean they wouldn’t be eligible. Tracy Allison, head of integrated children’s services at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “Feedback on our Facebook page suggests that too many people who would like to be foster carers have ruled themselves out, feeling that they will be rejected because of their circumstances. “In reality there are few restrictions on who can foster. Foster carers come from a very wide range of ages and backgrounds and receive regular support and training to give them the skills necessary to help children and young people through difficult times. More information on all aspects of fostering can be found on the council’s website www. fostersouthglos.org.uk or contact the team on 0800 206 1443.

This month, we meet Michael Byrne of Image Aerial Systems

Tell us about yourself. I started work in the shop of James TV, which fuelled my interest in electronics. I was then trained in TV aerial installations as an apprentice and during my 10 years with the company I worked my way up to sole trader. After a break in this line of work I realised it was the perfect job for me so in February this year I became self-employed and started my own business. Tell us what your business does. Installations of digital TV aerials, DAB/FM radio aerials, Sky repairs, multipoint systems, TV wall mounting and sales and installation of the latest HD receivers.

What are your biggest challenges? Being a newly established business it is very important to build up a professional image and attract customers new and old, which is difficult when starting out.

What is the best bit about your job? Getting to meet people every day and resolving their issues, as every job is different. Being my own boss has its perks, too.

Any extra information you’d like to tell readers? We offer free quotations and site surveys and a 12-month guarantee. All work is carried out to the highest level of standards. Check the website or Facebook for more details.

Why don’t they understand? Seeing empty beer cans and bottles left on a park bench recently, and an empty juice carton near another prompted me to wonder what is wrong with these people? It’s intriguing that they have the strength to carry these things when full all the way into the park but are too weak to carry the empty ones to the bin on their way out? Don’t worry, I’m not going to come at them with: ‘Don’t you care about the quality of your

local environment?’ or ‘Don’t you care about other people’s enjoyment of the park?’ That stuff is evidently way beyond their capacity to grasp. Trying to reason with their

feeble intellects would be like trying to teach a brown trout to play Chopin’s Piano Concerto No2 on a Steinway! No, I realise it’s the ‘Why these individuals don’t get it’, isn’t it?

Why should they take their own rubbish out with them? Why should they bin their own garbage on the way out? Why shouldn’t someone else have to clear up their rubbish? Yes, it’s the ‘Why they don’t grasp it’, isn’t it? I’m amazed they have the presence of mind to blow their own noses without someone else being there to remind them of WHY they should do it! “Dog-Walker”

As reported last month, the gating of private roads in and around Filton has proved beyond doubt a valuable asset. It has given added security that most residents contributed to and fought hard to get. The roads, previously unprotected, gave a “free-way” to those intent on gaining unauthorised access to properties along with many other devious activities. The gating of the roads restricting unauthorised intrusion was the obvious answer. Yet, surprisingly, amongst all the urge to protect properties there were those who did not want to create ... “Fortress

www.filtonvoice.co.uk

Filton.” Yet, at the same time they sought protection. It was obvious they could not have it “both ways.” It was on this problem that my attention was drawn recently to a residents’ private road bordering Filton’s boundary with Bristol. The gating of private roads encouraged residents to take greater pride in their back gardens knowing that the road privacy would protect them. However, an increased usage by motor cycles and others not known to the area has cast doubts on the security the gates provided. Were precautions in providing available keys being fully observed? Were unauthorised persons receiving keys? Filton Town Council, who control the issue of keys, have been alerted to this matter in order to ensure that no one other than authorised persons retain them It seems possible that this precaution is not being fully observed.

Regarding previous letters about garden fires: I live in Filton and I am sick of having to close my window and doors on sunny days and warm nights. My advice to the bonfire brigade ... have a green bin collection or take the green waste to the tip (no cost). If you don’t have a vehicle, ask for help from a relative. REACHING YOUR POTENTIAL

Could you Foster and make a difference? Remember what it was like to be a teenager? a mix of possibilities, opportunities, hormones and boundaries, homework and exams, people to see and places to go. Learning to be independent can be hard enough. If a Young Person has had distressing or troubled early childhood experiences, it can just add more stress to an already emotional time. Foster carers for teenagers need particular skills to carry out what can be a very varied and challenging job - sensitivity to a Young Persons situation, patience, tolerance and understanding. A foster carer needs to provide stability, safety and secure boundaries to keep them safe, while also encouraging them to spread their wings and take their first steps towards becoming happy, responsible adults. Most importantly, you need to be there for them, have good communication skills, provide consistent boundaries, negotiate effectively when difficulties arise and have a sense of humour! We will provide support 24/7 and extensive training plus a financial package. Make a difference. Contact National Fostering Agency today.

News Patients at heart of cancer centre A new dedicated centre has brought breast cancer services in the Bristol area under one roof for the first time. The Bristol Breast Care Centre, in the refurbished Beaufort House at Southmead Hospital, is now fully open and expects to see thousands of people each year for diagnosis and treatment. Clinical lead for symptomatic breast care services, Dr Mike Shere, said: “We are now all together with the screening service in one fantastic building. “Patients are telling us that they like the way that the design with lots of natural light relaxes them and we are already seeing the benefits of the larger team working together with expertise and equipment.”

Staff, patients and support groups including BUST, Bosom Buddies and Young Women 4 Young Women were consulted on the design and work was supported with funding from organisations including the Arts Council, Garfield Weston and John James Bristol Foundation along with other organisations and local fundraisers. The new Bristol Breast Care Centre has been created with the support of a £500,000 fundraising appeal. The appeal is continuing to raise the final funds to complete landscaping and art works along with multi-disciplinary rooms for staff and a children’s play area.

Douglas Daniels the late Filton councillor Joan Wilkes (representing the former Northavon District Council – now South Gloucestershire), we took great pride in ensuring the hospital used fresh produce as opposed to providing chilled meals. This resulted in the hospital receiving a coveted national award for the meals they provided. This headline cuts across all that we achieved. Understandably, a new hospital of this magnitude at Southmead needs time to settle in. Staff and patients alike have aired their grievances. But the majority of these grievances have come from outside the hospital rather than from within it.

Lack of parking has been the foremost complaint, particularly the overflow into nearby streets. Yet the food aspect worried me most of all since we had achieved so much in ensuring the hospital’s previous good name. I had the opportunity to visit the hospital recently – as a patient and was kept in overnight. It gave me a first-hand opportunity to address the issues that had been raised against it. Were they factual or merely user grievances of a lesser importance? Welcomed in A&E, I was wheeled the long distance from the entrance by two ladies. “We will bring you back!”

they assured me. My check-up was really professional. No panic! I received an A-level MOT. My overnight room was cool, yet comfortable with an accompanying well-equipped bathroom. It was exceptionally clean. It was a real change from a busy ward and well attended by nursing staff who were on call if you needed them at the touch of a button. As for the food, it was small in quantity yet well prepared. It suited my diminished appetite. If the photographer was expecting a gourmet meal I would set aside the treatment and go to a restaurant!

Action-packed summer for youth club

with Filton Sgt Steve Ives With the nights drawing in, it’s that time of year when we tend to see an increase in burglaries in the South Gloucestershire area. We don’t want to alarm anyone, but we do want to remind homeowners to be aware and to take some simple security measures to prevent you becoming a victim of crime. I know it sounds like stating the obvious, but locking up and shutting windows can go a long way to keeping the burglars out. Our statistics show that most break-ins are committed by opportunist thieves, and in a quarter of cases they didn’t even have to use force to gain entry. So please lock up, even if you’re popping next door or going into the garden. Leave a light on or fit a light timer for when you’re out. Consider fitting a burglar alarm – an effective deterrent. Register your property and valuables at www.immobilise.com, a free national property database, and mark it with your name and postcode. This all deters thieves, because it means the rightful owner can be identified and property proved to be stolen. It’s also a great idea to turn

on the tracking software on your mobile phone or tablet. We’ve had several cases in South Gloucestershire recently where it’s been proven to help us not only trace items that have been stolen, but to lead us straight to the thieves. An iPad reported stolen from a house in Downend in August was traced to an address in Kingswood that same day, and a man arrested. And in September, within hours of an iPad being stolen from a house in Bradley Stoke, we’d traced it to an address in Southmead where another man was arrested. It really goes to show that, if you do put on the tracking device, we can solve a crime and get your property back. Contact the Filton team: • Call your neighbourhood team on 101 • Make an appointment to meet an officer by phone • Go to www. avonandsomerset.police.uk – you can message local officers, report crime, find local policing information and more • Call into Southmead Police Station, Southmead Road, Bristol, BS10 5DW. It’s open between 8am and 10pm seven days a week. • In an emergency call 999.

The Pyramid Youth Club has had a busy few months, starting off with two camping and activity weekends in South Gloucestershire which were enjoyed by all. When school closed for summer, the club offered several weeks of daytime activities. Members and their friends enjoyed Laserquest, horse riding, a trip to an indoor skate park,

dance, a visit to Oasis Swindon for swimming, indoor rock climbing and ten pin bowling. The club was open on Monday evenings and the activities were well attended with the club’s new minibus, which was given to the group recently, getting a lot of use. The club is open to all young people in Filton. Email pyramid youthclub@hotmail.co.uk.

family. All that is left is the cold comfort of religious dogma and Juno, disabused of her illusions regarding her husband’s nature, bereft at the killing of her son, but still fighting for her daughter’s well-being. Despite its comic moments, this is pure tragedy, an eloquent illustration of the fragility of hope and how easily you can begin with nothing and end up with even less. Niamh Cusak in the role of Juno is riveting, seemingly inhabiting the role rather than acting it, and while I felt Des McAleer as the Paycock lacked the necessary veneer of charisma, the supporting cast – in particular, Maureen O’Connell as daughter Mary and Donal Gallery as her brother Johnny – were excellent. Hope of betterment comes in the form of a bequest in a cousin’s will. In anticipation of wealth, the couple splash out on new furniture while their daughter is poised to marry the solicitor who brings the good news. Only their son, who has been physically and psychologically maimed in the Easter Rising and is now in hiding, remains impervious to the atmosphere of optimism. Of course, what goes up must come down. As the inheritance proves illusory, daughter Mary falls from grace and is violently rejected by her father, and civil war engulfs the

This production, put on jointly between the Old Vic and the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, of Seán O’Casey’s seminal 1924 play Juno and the Paycock feels very timely. Set in the tenements of Dublin during the Irish Civil War period of the early 1920s, the story of a family moving from hardship to disintegration plays out against a backdrop of unemployment, religion, working class impoverishment and a country struggling to assert its independence of British control. At the start of the play, the Boyle family are living at subsistence level in their bare rooms. The head of the family, “Captain” Jack, a malingerer and the “Paycock” of the title, spends much of

Curried grilled salmon

This is a Maniks twist on a classic Indian dish. Also works well with tuna and trout. A healthy mouth-watering dish that is subtly flavoured and is an ideal treat day or night. The curry-seasoned marinade and refreshing cucumber, and mango relish give the grilled fish a decidedly international flair. Combine with grilled lightly buttered bread and mashed potato for an ideal meal. The following recipe serves two. Enjoy…. ... with Maniks Restaurant, Glos Rd North, Filton

preheat one side of the grill. Take the fish out of the re-sealable bag and discard marinade. 3. Place salmon skin side down on grill rack or small pan with a small knob of butter, add the chilli powder (if you want a kick) and sprinkle fillets with lemon juice and sprinkle of salt and pepper and continue to grill, covered, over medium heat for 8-12 minutes or until fish flakes easily with a fork. Take out the salmon and remove excess oil and lightly dry on a kitchen towel. 4. For the side salad, thinly slice cucumber and add a pinch of salt and pepper. Combine a drizzle of mango chutney into a large cup of yoghurt. Again, like the fish you add some chilli powder, this will ensure that you have a sweet and hot accompaniment. 5. Finally thinly slice a baguette and grill with butter and then enjoy! 6. Should serve 2 hungry people.

October: Smart phones You see them all around these days. A phone is no longer just a phone. In fact it is really difficult to buy a mobile phone that just makes calls. But what else can they do? Phones are just small computers, with processors (the bit that does all the calculations) that are as powerful as ones in desktop PCs a few years ago. You can install programs on them (called apps) to do a task like watch BBC News, or open Word documents or play games. At the moment, on Google’s app store alone there are over one million apps. You cannot install PC programs on a phone. They have to be specially written for the type of phone you have. There are three main types of systems they run on. Android (by Google), iOS (by Apple) and Windows (by Microsoft). Many are free to download and are very high quality. Phones can do pretty much everything a tablet can do, and also make phone calls. In fact they are called phablets! So anything from surfing the net and receiving email, to tweeting, checking your stocks and shares, writing a novel or just playing a game is possible. Creating an app can be quite straightforward, so if you can think of an idea that no one has done yet, you might be able to make your first million! Of course, if you would like to have a chat about anything in this article, please contact us on 0117 969 8767 or visit us in our shop on the corner of Filton Avenue and the A4174. Advert, Page 2

What a performance! The children from Charborough Road’s Year 6 were outstanding in their performances depicting the Roaring 20s in Chicago, and especially the ‘splurge warfare’ between Fat Sam and Dandy Dan, where even the audience got a super-soaking! Each member of the cast sang, acted and danced superbly on both performances, attended by very proud staff, parents, families and friends. It provided a fantastic memory for everyone in Year 6. Well done everyone!

Filton Hill Primary During the first two weeks in September, the whole school theme was the school’s 60th birthday. There was a celebration on 12th September when each class focused on a decade and performed songs and talked to the audience about the major events. All the children, parents and staff made a plate to do with a

specific decade and these were on display all over the school. The parents brought in cakes to celebrate and money raised went to the Macmillan Cancer Care Trust (£105). Canon Brian Arman came in to join the celebrations and cut the cake. Some teachers had invited

Abbeywood can now proudly state that we have 42 fully trained BeatBullying Mentors across years 8-11. The volunteer students took part in an intensive two-day training course. Two groups of students were trained over four days by two representatives from the international online organisation BeatBullying. Our mentors learned how to conduct a professional mentoring session with their fellow students. They also learned about the different kinds of bullying that exist – from cyber bullying to prejudice based bullying. The Mentors also explored the reasons why some people display bullying behaviours and the short and long term effects this can have on the target. BeatBullying is an international bullying prevention charity working and campaigning to make bullying unacceptable, on the ground in the UK and across Europe. BeatBullying believe that no one should endure the pain, fear or isolation of being bullied, and that everyone has the right to be safe from bullying, violence and harassment. The Abbeywood community couldn’t agree with this sentiment more, as it reflects the values depicted in our Abbeywood Wordle, below.

Pétanque team say cheers as brewery sponsors kit Filton Pétanque Club members are celebrating the sponsorship of their new polo shirts by Box Steam Brewery, which supplies beers to the Ratepayers Arms bar at Filton Sports and Leisure Centre. Club secretary Roger Hutchinson said: “We are a small but growing club and are keen to make Filton the centre of pétanque in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. This sponsorship is a big step forward to us and we are very grateful to the Box brewery for their help and support.” Speaking for the brewery, South West regional manager

Barney Waspe, pictured with club members, said: “As well as being passionate about creating distinctive craft beers with taste and character, we’re also massive fans of pétanque at our brewery in Holt, near Bradford on Avon. “We’re delighted to support Filton Pétanque Club and proud to sponsor the club’s new polo shirts.” Box Steam Brewery is an award-winning, independent, family-owned craft brewer founded in Wiltshire in 2004. by Rebecca Day Residents are being encouraged to have their say about a proposed multi-million pound sports development in Frenchay Park Road this month. Under the plans, the former market garden site will be home to Dings Crusaders rugby club, and will encompass a new clubhouse with a sports hall, and three senior and three junior rugby pitches – all of which will be available to local community groups and sports organisations. Proposals were first announced by owners of Dings – Lockleaze Recreation Ground – during the summer after 10 years of searching for a new site. They say that existing facilities - which have been home to Dings for over 60 years – are now deemed “unsuitable and financially beyond repair”. To fund the relocation, Lockleaze Recreation Ground reached an agreement with Redrow Homes to redevelop the existing ground in Landseer Avenue, plans for which will be revealed at a consultation meeting on October 11 at Dings' clubhouse. At the consultation, Lockleaze Recreation Ground board members, and Redrow Homes and their design team, will be on

hand to answer questions from the public. Ray Bowden, president of Lockleaze Recreation Ground, said: “This is an important part of the planning process as it gives the community the opportunity to discuss the proposals with us and our professional design team. “So far we have had over 20 meetings with a wide range of parties, including Lockleaze Voice, the immediate neighbours and local organisations in Frenchay, and statutory consultees. “We are now demonstrating how we have taken on board comments and we will be highlighting this at the display so that people can understand the issues and process. “The plans are still evolving and we urge everybody to make the most of this opportunity to discuss the plans with us.” Detailed plans of the proposed schemes for both sites will be on show at the consultation. Comments received from the public will help shape the proposals which are to be submitted for planning permission later this year. The consultation meeting runs from 10am-4pm at the Dings clubhouse, Landseer Avenue.

Everything changes for Under-11s It was one of those “I was there” moments and worthy of a special mention in this magazine, writes our correspondent. The players, manager and parents involved with St Vallier Under-11s are a resilient group who, for various reasons, have had to endure an unfortunate run of defeats which started the season before last, carried on right through last season and had continued into this one. But on a sunny afternoon on the last Sunday in September everything changed. As Under-9s and Under-10s, the boys had to play in two teams of seven-a-side, and the winner was determined by the aggregate score over the two games. However, now as Under-11s, the format has changed and only one match of 9-a-side is required. Results so far this season had shown signs of improvement, so there was expectation in the air as the boys took to the field

The winning team and man of the match Alex Hayward with Glenn Haynes against Ashton FC. After a shaky start, St Vallier started to dominate in the midfield, and hopes were raised even more when Alex Hayward gave the team a 1-0 half-time lead. You could feel the tension as the second period began. Ashton FC were pushing for an equaliser and Ellis Prewitt in goal dealt well with crosses from both sides of the pitch. However, a second,

and then a third goal from St Vallier calmed the nerves. The boys grew in confidence and started to play their way through midfield, with particular success down the left hand side. In the end, St Vallier Under-11s won by six goals to nil, with Alex Hayward scoring a hat-trick and earning the Man of the Match Award. However, all the boys deserve praise for the

team’s performance as a whole. A delighted Glenn Haynes, manager of the team, told Filtonvoice: “The boys deserve this moment for all their hard work and commitment and for persevering when things weren’t going so well for us. “I am really proud of the team and am confident that we can use this result to push on from here.”

Busy summer for table tennis star Louis After training in Hennebont in France with some of the best table tennis juniors, Louis Price entered the Andro Kids Open in Dusseldorf, Germany where he got to the quarter finals, losing to the eventual winner. It was a great weekend’s work with more than 1,600 entries. Ten-year-old Louis entered the Bribar Plymouth 1 Star Open mid-September and won the Under-11s category and finished third in the Under-13 age group. This was a good start to the
