NEWSLETTER OF THE ROYAL REGIMENT OF SCOTLAND

Recruiting Support Team The Golden Lions Parachute Display Team was formed in 1969 and given valuable service to the Scottish Division, and latterly to the Royal Regiment of Scotland, enhancing the Regimental profile by flying the flag at KAPE and now Community Engagement activities. They still hold the record for the UK highest altitude landing at 4.084ft in the Cairngorms. After considerable consultation it is with great sadness that we have to announce that they will return to

their units by 31 Mar 11 and will no longer exist. This Regimental decision has not been an easy one to make and is inline with the removal of ‘black economy’ personnel to meet the requirements of Op ENTIRETY, and in the face of considerable financial cuts throughout the army. They plan to complete their final jump in Feb 11, details of which can be obtained through the team on 94748 5521.

Benevolence and Welfare Welfare Grants Since the 1st April 2010 the Regimental Association has paid out the sum of £8,178 in 50 individual welfare cases. Many of these cases were supplemented by grants from the Army Benevolent Fund - The Soldiers Fund, Poppyscotland and the Royal British Legion. If personnel belong to a particular trade or occupation, it is advisable to inform the SSAFA Caseworker of this fact. This will then make them eligible for respective trade trust funds which could augment grants from The Regimental Association. The procedure for applying for a welfare grant is listed at the front of the Regimental Diary and can be found on the Regimental website. Personnel should note that the Army Benevolent Fund is UK wide and Poppyscotland covers only those resident in Scotland. Applications for grants should

be supported by a SSAFA case workers report. Any queries on benevolence or welfare should be directed to Maj (Retd) Frank Morton at RHQ on 0131 310 5090.

Regimental Sport Football Congratulations to 1 SCOTS who beat 1RRF 7-1 in The Infantry Football Cup at Dreghorn Barracks on 18 Jan, in particular to LCpl Quin who scored 5 goals. Their next match is against 1 PWRR in Germany.

Swimming 2Lt Marcus Roberts, 6 SCOTS, recently led the first Infantry team since 2007 to enter the Army Inter-Corps Swimming Championships. As well as leading a very successful Infantry team, he personally won 2 x gold medals (and setting 2 new Inter Corps times in the process) and Silver in the Mens’ 200 metres Individual medley. 2Lt Roberts is the Secretary of the Infantry Swimming team. Anyone in SCOTS who is interested in swimming for the Infantry should contact 2Lt Roberts on 0141 224 5436 or titchroberts89@hotmail.co.uk

Rugby Congratulations to 1 SCOTS Rugby Team who beat 19 Fd Regt RA 72 – 7 on 26 Jan in the final match of the First Round Pools of The Army Rugby Union Premiership (previously called The Army Cup). 1 SCOTS are now through to the Quarter Finals and their next match is at Dreghorn Barracks on 4 Feb against 2 RIFLES.

held in Rauris, Austria and 3 SCOTS sent a team of 8 competitors, 6 of whom who were new to Telemark skiing. After 5 days instruction, individuals were chosen to race either in the Championship or Development events. Throughout the second week those in the Championship competed in Giant Slalom GS, Sprint Classic (SC) and Classic; the latter two involving not only a GS descent but also jump and skate sections. Development races were held in the same disciplines but on easier ground and over shorter distances. For the first time this year the exercise also hosted an off piste Mountain Race involving an uphill section on skins followed by a descent. The team performed exceptionally well, winning 3 bronze medals, 1 silver and 1 gold; the latter a victory in the team mountain race, much to the irritation of the large Royal Marine contingent! The most prestigious award of the event, The Chairman’s Cup, was also awarded to the team for their display of sportsmanship, esprit de corps and effort on and off the slopes. Telemarking is a fantastic sport and should be attempted by any skier looking for a new challenge it tests even the most competent Alpiners and allows a different approach to skiing.

Tartan Cassino Team Tartan Cassino, comprising 3 SCOTS soldiers, will cycle 1750 miles in just 14 days cycling an average of 125 miles per day. The team will set off in March from Monte Cassino in Italy to cycle to their finish at Edinburgh Castle. They are raising money for 4 charities – Help for Heroes, Erskine, The Black Watch Association, and our own Royal Regiment of Scotland Association. http://www.tartancassino.com/

Hearts and Heroes Challenge This event will take place on Sat 14 May across a stunning 29-mile section of the Southern Highland Way in the Scottish Borders, from St Mary’s Loch to Melrose. Last year the Regiment entered 16 teams into this event and helped it to raise £400k. The Charity raises money for veterans in Scotland, and this year also for Hearts and Balls (the rugby charity). The Regt have agreed to provide Regtl funds to cover registration fees for teams who wish to enter this year. Teams will raise money for The Regimental Welfare Fund. If you are interested, go through your Unit CoC, or via Maj (Retd) Frank Morton OBE at RHQ SCOTS for those at ‘E’. http://www.heartsandheroes.co.uk/

Officer recruiting remains buoyant, bucking the Army trend. We generally send about 25 Potential Officers each term to Sandhurst, with an expectation of accepting about 23 cadets into the Regiment each year. Competition therefore is tight, and is the way we would wish it.
