WELCOME TO THE 2013–2014 ALLIANCE JUSTICE AND COMPASSION GIFT CATALOGUE! Whether it is caring for abandoned infants in West Africa or advocating for trafficked women in Canada, our family of churches is recapturing God’s heart for justice and compassion. We are committed to a biblical balance of declaring and demonstrating the Gospel of Jesus that redeems our relationships with God, with one another and with his creation. We are called to be ministers of Christ’s message of reconciliation that offers to release people from spiritual, physical, relational, social and economic bondages. We have International Workers in over 40 countries that we have identified as our Four S regions (Silk Road, Caribbean Sun, Asian Spice, and Desert Sand). Together with the Fifth S, Canadian Sea to Sea region, we are seeking to bring a holistic message of healing and wholeness as we engage in transformative practices that improve, in sustainable ways, the well-being of people made vulnerable by circumstances of poverty, disaster and injustice. Our justice and compassion work is funded through designated funds. This catalogue outlines many of these ministries. We invite you to participate with us in offering dignity and hope to those who live on the margins of society. ABOUT THE COVER PHOTO Meet Aissa. She is one of the shining stars from the Niger Vocational Training School, which opened its doors in 2010 to 60 young women, all of whom were living in conditions of serious poverty and at risk for early marriage and prostitution. Aissa and her classmates participated in a three year vocational program which included training in sewing, tailoring and embroidery, as well as weekly lessons in the areas of health, hygiene, childbirth, pregnancy, and moral and spiritual lessons. An eager student, Aissa confidently challenged and passed the national sewing exam a year early! In June 2013, these young women were recognized as the first graduating class of the Niger Vocational Training School. Thank you for your generous support of this

CARIBBEAN ISLAND MINISTRIES “I thought the church was a ‘money-grab’ — but now the church is giving money away!” Many people in our island community are uttering these words as their negative perceptions about the church are changing. It is our desire to see a holistic transformation which includes both economic and spiritual change. We provide micro-loans not only to members of our Alliance churches, but also to members of the community, regardless of their denominational ties. This inclusive, compassionate approach expresses the love of God by fostering inter-denominational unity as we work in partnership to reach our communities for Christ. Our holistic approach includes a leadership training seminar that provides a spiritual foundation for economic success, paired with weekly Bible teaching and encouraging involvement in a prayer network with daily Scriptures.

GIVING LIFE A SECOND CHANCE In response to the high rate of teenage pregnancy in Quito, Ecuador, Casa Elizabeth has been a welcoming place for expectant homeless teens since 2010. This place of refuge offers an alternative to what often ends in abortion. In this stable and nurturing environment, girls can find emotional stability and become equipped with empowering maternal skills. Girls receive support from the beginning of pregnancy until three months after the baby is born. With your help, five girls at any one time will be cared for with nutritious meals, personal hygiene items, maternity clothes, visits to a doctor, medications and the necessary provisions for their newborn baby.

SUN COMPASSION COSTA RICA could not afford the extra mouth to feed. Past donations to this project have made it possible for Pamela to attend school and sleep in a proper bed. Anthony’s physical, spiritual and emotional needs are now being met because a family was identified to care for him and, like Pamela, he has opportunity to attend school. As well, more than 50 children were enrolled in elementary school last year because we were able to provide school uniforms and supplies.
Twelve-year-old Pamela’s only diet for six months straight was cooking bananas. Her bed consisted simply of boards with slats missing. Anthony, the same age as Pamela, was about to be sold by his mom as she
The ideal is that families will eventually have their own means to provide for their children. This project includes nutrition training and provision of livelihoods. Baby April’s family (pictured left) just received a calf. This will provide milk, the production of cheese and the opportunity to save towards the expenses required when April is ready to start school. RETURNING HOME MEXICO Human trafficking often starts with girls being tricked into prostitution, especially when surrounded by poverty and abuse. Also, with many immigrants passing through Mexico on their way to discover the “American dream,” these non-residents are voiceless and highly vulnerable to being trafficked internationally. Brave Heart exists to mobilize others to be proactive in creating awareness for this critical issue so many can be saved from the tragic outcome. We believe God’s love shines in this dark reality. Returning is a top quality video of young advocates following trafficking routes throughout Central and South America in order to educate other youth on the “why” and “how” of human trafficking. When confronted with this reality, we are seeing groups of people rise to the challenge, change laws and provide safe care for girls who have escaped.

We hear kids say, “I want to be a lawyer to lobby for children’s rights” or “I want to be a teacher and tell people that God loves them” as we work alongside orphanages and children’s homes in Mexico. As the C&MA in Mexico, we come alongside these homes to champion them and serve as catalysts so that they become more self-sustainable. THE TARAHUMARA PROJECT Imagine a language without a word for ‘hope’ or ‘love’. This is what we have learned of the Tarahumara, a remote indigenous group living in the Copper Canyon of Mexico. A sobering reality is that 50% of the children die before the age of 10. The girls who do survive suffer sexual, emotional IMAGINE A LANGUAGE and physical WITHOUT A WORD FOR abuse that starts HOPE OR LOVE around age 12 and continues into adulthood. There is great need for a women’s shelter and medical clinic because the nearest health facility is a 10-hour journey on foot.
Our Sun Compassion team has seen, first-hand, their troubled existence. The Mexican Alliance Church and partnering Canadian C&MA churches have been building strong relationships of trust with this community over the past 18 years and are now seeing them trust in Jesus and seek wholeness for their people. The C&MA Women’s Ministries has chosen to take action. This will be their international project for 2013/14 and we invite you to contribute to this initiative. As we demonstrate compassion, our prayer is that the Tarahumara will begin to experience and express hope and love.

PATARRA PROJECT Cecilia is an amazing woman. Angered and frustrated by the pattern in her community of adultery, alcoholism, drug abuse and neglect to the families, she saw an opportunity to transform her community for Jesus.
HER DEEP LOVE FOR THE FATHER IS WHAT COMPELS HER IN ALL THAT SHE DOES
Cecilia began feeding the neighbourhood kids out of her own kitchen with whatever beans and rice she could scrape together. People heard what she was doing and began to donate food. One woman was compelled to donate a piece of property, enabling a community outreach centre to be opened. Many more kids came for lunch. The impact continued to grow into ministry
opportunities, including a Vacation Bible School program and a weekly women’s Bible study. From the women’s study, a sewing co-op started and has provided a means for women to earn income. It also creates a safe place in a dangerous community. However, the current shelter is in desperate need of improvement. Constructed out of found scraps of metal, branches and bamboo, there is no kitchen; all the cooking is done at Cecilia’s daughter’s house, two doors down. Your donations will contribute to constructing a safe and secure building and increasing the opportunities for outreach into the surrounding communities. This is an amazing story of hope out of darkness. It’s hard to imagine that such a tiny lady as Cecilia would be capable of bringing about such profound changes in the community. Yet Cecilia doesn’t talk to anyone without talking about Jesus. Her deep love for the Father is what compels her in all that she does.

GUINEA RESCUE CENTRE Social services for unwanted newborns is non-existent in Guinea. In response to this, our team has established the Source of Life Infant Rescue Centre. The centre provides abandoned babies with immediate medical care and nourishment. Many come with serious malnutrition or illnesses like malaria. Newborns receive formula for the first year and transition to less expensive milk after 12 months. There are consistently 10 infants on formula at a time so this is definitely a costly monthly expense. This year, the centre hired Dr. Charles, a Belgian trained local pediatrician with a love for children.
The infants have consistent care, as he ensures the children are not overmedicated or taking inappropriate medicine for their illness, which often happens by visiting random doctors. Dr. Charles has cut the centre’s medical bills in half which allows them to pay him a modest salary. His intervention has not only saved unnecessary expenses, but our children are always receiving the best medical care. The centre’s positive reputation in the community has led to a need for expansion, as more infants are being brought to them. Thanks to donor support last year, the Infant Rescue Centre was able to move out of an apartment that accommodated 12 infants into a large house that can accommodate up to 25 infants. An important aspect of this ministry is advocating for these precious children to ensure the legal process is engaged to qualify children for adoption. This past year the centre celebrated its first international adoption as one of the little girls was adopted by an Alliance pastoral couple here in Canada.

KIDS IN CRISIS United Nations research estimates that there are close to 400,000 orphans in Guinea, West Africa. Many of these children have been orphaned by AIDS. Statistics reveal that less than 1% of Guinean orphans go to school. Our Alliance team is seeking to minister to this vulnerable group. This ministry has two main initiatives. The Kids in Crisis Centre currently cares for 33 of these precious orphans full time and also provides 150 children with the opportunity to attend school.

In Niger, a country largely covered by the Sahara Desert, over half the population struggles to find water for their daily needs. It is the women’s responsibility to provide water for their families. They often walk miles to access even unclean water, carrying it home in buckets on their heads. Many villages dig wells in sandy soil, often collapsing during the rainy season. By reinforcing existing wells and digging new ones, our workers are bringing life to people in a dry and dusty land.

Niger continues to land at the bottom of the United Nations Human Development Index with the 2013 rankings. Seventy-six percent of the population lives on less than $2/day and less than a third of adults are literate. The child mortality rate remains one of the world’s highest, as one in five children die of preventable diseases like malaria and malnutrition before the age of five. The child bride numbers are also among the highest in the world. It is in this context that our International Worker team is working with the Fulani and Taureq people groups in order to see them overcome these statistics and see their communities transformed, both physically and spiritually.

We can make this right a reality today in Niger for the working poor, the disabled, the stricken, the widows and the orphans, while we also work with communities towards innovative long-term housing solutions. Each year, rains destroy the straw huts of the most vulnerable. With your help, we will help them rebuild their homes and avert their housing crises. Mosquito nets are a proven, cost-effective means of decreasing child mortality in the developing world. One mosquito net will prevent 44% of malaria deaths for four years for those who sleep under it. Now that’s a big deal!

NIGER VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE YOUNG GIRLS ARE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN A TWO-YEAR PROGRAM THAT FOCUSES ON HEALTH AND LIFE SKILLS AS WELL AS VOCATIONAL TRAINING
Upon graduation, each student keeps her sewing machine, providing a poverty-stricken young woman with a doorway to a better life. Not only can she sew clothes for her family, but she can also make a steady income in the safety of her own home.
Education for girls in Niger is often not an option. Spending their days helping with cooking, housekeeping and caring for younger siblings, they’re often married by age sixteen or younger. Young men, growing up in a pastoralist culture herding cattle and goats, do not have trade skills that are now desperately needed to provide for their families.
The Niger Vocational Training Centre’s Second Chance apprenticeship program is providing necessary vocational training to young urban Tuareg men. Our team, led by a qualified Canadian welder, will give practical welding instruction, and will partner with local instructors to prepare the apprentices for the national welding exam. Health and life skills will round out the teaching, with biblical truths woven throughout. We select unschooled young men ready to work for a second chance at life. The program also includes training in construction and small business knowledge.
Through the Niger Vocational Training Centre, young girls are given the opportunity to participate in a twoyear program that focuses on health and life skills as well as vocational training, such as sewing. Fathers make a commitment to not give their daughter in marriage until they complete the program, thereby increasing both her physical and emotional maturity.

One man, a believer for 10 years, was attacked by relatives in front of his wife and two children. Relatives went to the police and he was put in jail — bail was set at $14,000 USD. While out on bail, the Human Rights and Emergency Fund were used to

REHAB CENTRE Drug addiction has become a fast-growing problem in Serbia with an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 drug users. With alcohol, the situation is even worse, with 83% of the population believed to be abusing alcohol (Institute for Public Health). The good news is that these people are often very open to the Gospel through the ministry of the Rehabilitation Centre. “After 18 years of hell and heroin addiction, I am free. Free to live, dream and hope. Jesus changed my life, restored my life and even gave me a wife. Thank you Jesus!” – Jana (Rehab) “I overdosed, and was on the edge of death. I stopped breathing. TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS Health care in Serbia is very poor, especially for people diagnosed with cancer. Without enough resources, terminally ill children and adults are sent home without care or medication. Through this Silk Road ministry to terminally ill patients, opportunities are created for teams to visit, minister to and care for those dying of cancer “I did not expect to ever hear the news that I have cancer. $50 BEAUTIFUL GATE MINISTRY $50 will enable Beautiful Gate Church to provide food and housing to villagers coming to the city for medical care and to offer follow-up pastoral care, encouragement and support back in their villages.
About 25 years ago, a young man in the Asian Spice region fell from a tree and broke his back, leaving him a paraplegic. During his many months’ stay in a Christian hospital, he came to the Lord and was then baptized during an era when changing from your former religion was against the law.
villagers by providing food and housing in the church compound, and walking alongside them through all their medical needs. Many of these villagers would come to the church services held in the compound and some would even return to their villages as baptized believers.
After being relocated with his wife and son to the capital city, he became very aware of the plight of the disabled in this developing world environment where hopelessness abounds in their lives. The young man and his wife began reaching out to them, loving them and telling them about Jesus. Out of this small fellowship grew Beautiful Gate Church—a community of believers with a heart for the poorest of the poor, the disabled and the lepers.
Beautiful Gate’s ministry has expanded to include travelling to outlying areas where new churches have formed: visiting fellowship meetings for disabled believers, visiting a leprosy colony’s “tea fellowship”, ministering, performing baptisms and offering pastoral care by supporting and encouraging those churches located in remote areas.
Through compassionate care for those who travelled into their city for medical purposes, an amazing outreach program took shape as Beautiful Gate Church workers met the practical needs of these poor

CUP OF COLD WATER It is estimated that between 40-60% of citizens on this Asian Spice Island are unable to read or write. At the same time, many people suffer from illness and preventable disease because of their poverty and distance from healthcare. Health problems are often exacerbated by illiteracy. Often women are unable to fill out government forms that would entitle them and their children to free medical care. Our Spice team is offering literacy classes for women while incorporating health clinics for their families. Because of past donations to this project we have already celebrated nine graduating literacy classes!!

SUSTAINABLE RURAL LIVELIHOOD Is putting food on the table enough? What would your family life be like if you could feed your children, but not pay for clothing, transportation, education or health care?
THIS PROJECT HAS OPENED A DOOR TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS AND SHARE THE GOOD NEWS IN THESE RURAL COMMUNITIES In one Asian Spice country, rural subsistence farmers may have small plots of land to grow their own food, but it is impossible for them to earn any income to
support these additional needs—especially where inequality between the urban privileged and the rural poor exists. The Sustainable Rural Livelihood Project is providing families like these with a business structure for earning a living within their own villages while continuing to farm. Yarn and clothing accessories are made in their homes and then these products are brought to market around the world. In addition to supplementing their income, this project has opened a door to build relationships and share the Good News in these rural communities.

SUSTAINABLE VILLAGE HEALTH CARE Over the past year, the generosity of our gift catalogue donors has been providing Sustainable Village health care to seven different tribes in Papua, Indonesia. Since many of these tribes live too far from urban centres to receive necessary medical care, a high number of preventable deaths occur because of malaria, complications in childbirth and malnutrition. Infant and child mortality rates are extremely concerning in areas without access to medical care. It is not uncommon for a woman to bear 10 children and yet see only half of these children reach adulthood. This is most often caused by complications in childbirth, poor nutrition and lack of medical assistance. Donating to the Sustainable Village Health care project can help a community become better equipped and prepared to meet their health care needs by providing prenatal education, training in
midwifery techniques, access to medication and even something so simple as mosquito netting. Malaria is the #1 killer in the lower lying areas, and especially of little children. These protective nets are not readily available to people living in the interior. It is so encouraging to report that great strides have already been made because of last year’s donations. Many women in this region have been given the opportunity to participate in prenatal education, not just as students, but also by becoming instructors and sharing this valuable knowledge with others. Some women have received much-needed midwifery skills— so we celebrate and give thanks that many lives will be saved as these techniques are shared. It is our prayer and goal that these skills will continue to be taught to others. Our goal is that prenatal training coupled with midwifery care, access to medication, and provision of mosquito nets will equip villages with the tools they need for self-governed, self-sustained, long-term village health care.

THE DAWN PROJECT The Dawn School is located in a Southeast Asian country and is a providing quality elementary education for local children with the addition of values education based on the fruit of the Spirit. Additionally, the school offers extracurricular programs including English classes, dance, art and music—opportunities that most kids in this country would never have. The children are also fed nutritious lunches and snacks in order to improve their well-being. The students also receive a health check-up every three months. Health and nutrition programs are also offered to parents. The school is having a positive influence into many communities within the city as the children come from all areas and strata of the city. Your support of the Dawn School project is very welcome as the school helps meet educational, family and community needs.
$70 DAWN SCHOOL PROJECT It is typical in this country for a family to pay the fees to provide three uniforms, a book bag, notebooks and writing supplies. Your donation will provide that for a child who does not have the means. The Dawn project also provides the facility rental fees and teacher salaries, nutritious meals for the children, and hygiene products like toothbrushes and toothpaste.

TRICKED, TRAFFICKED, TREASURED
The Tricked, Trafficked, Treasured project seeks to bring healing and wholeness to women who have been trapped in the sex trade and to men who are recovering from drug addiction. The counselling, skills training and employment opportunities being provided to these men and women at two social enterprise ventures are vital to their healing as they reintegrate into society with dignity.

URBAN GARDENS In this Asian Spice country, Urban Gardens are being developed as a way to provide the tools and skills necessary for growing fresh fruits and vegetables in poor refugee neighbourhoods. In building these greenhouses and gardens, we are offering life skills that empower a refugee community to provide food for themselves. It also offers us an amazing opportunity to deepen relationships organically and further the reach of the Gospel in this region. There are two initiatives with this project: 1) building greenhouses within refugee camps and 2) planting community gardens. The construction costs for a greenhouse total $600. The amount to establish a small garden is $200.

WONDER PRODUCTS REFUGEE MINISTRY A social enterprise venture is making a difference in the Asian Spice region. Hiring refugees from a neighbouring country (who are otherwise unemployed), a fruit juice production venture is mentoring good work ethics while teaching honest work ethics, which are highly valued and necessary for integrating into the local society. Our International Worker in that region recently had a conversation with one of the local school teachers regarding a former student. This young man has
struggled for years with gambling, alcohol and drug addictions, but since coming to work full time for the juice company, major changes have been observed. Gradually, he has adopted ideas and ethics such as integrity, forgiveness, trust and faith in Jesus. His school teacher commented on these changes declaring; “It’s because you keep loving him and forgiving him when he fails, that his self-esteem has risen. He is saying really positive things about life changes and the overall purpose of life.”

VIETNAMESE DIASPORA OUTREACH MINISTRY An overwhelming majority of the people in North Vietnam have not had a chance to hear the gospel. In recent years, however, a number of migrant workers from Vietnam have been economically motivated to pursue jobs AN OVERWHELMING or marriages in Taiwan that MAJORITY OF THE promise to PEOPLE IN NORTH VIETNAM HAVE NOT HAD provide income for their families A CHANCE TO HEAR THE back home. GOSPEL Unfortunately, these new immigrants and migrant workers (the diaspora) are often caught up in systems of injustice and exploitation, helplessly unable to provide for their families. As they attempt to escape these situations, they are without travel documents or a means to live and often find themselves in Taiwanese prisons or detention centres. The Vietnamese Diaspora Outreach Ministry has
determined to care for the physical and spiritual needs of these people in three ways:
IMMIGRATION DETENTION CENTRE EVANGELISM There are at least four large Immigration Detention Centres in Taiwan. These centres normally hold about 400 Vietnamese detainees. There are hundreds of people being held and then deported back home each month. Our team makes regular visits to these centres to share the gospel and to distribute hygiene care packages. Many have made the choice to follow Jesus before they return to Vietnam. It is our prayer that they will carry the gospel message back to their families.
PRISON MINISTRY Feelings of failure, shame and guilt weigh heavily on the minds of incarcerated foreigners, but deeper yet is the emotional distress in not being able to provide for their family back home. Visits from those who

Our team goes to the prison every week for Bible study and worship with the Vietnamese inmates. This drop-in centre offers them a place of safety where they find friendship, love, acceptance and care, physically and emotionally but spiritually as well. REFUGEE SPONSORSHIP Refugee sponsorship, at its best, is a relational investment where sponsors work together to help newcomers resettle into a local Canadian community
The Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada is a Sponsorship Agreement Holder with Citizenship and Immigration Canada. This means our local Alliance churches can identify specific refugees or refugee families for sponsorship. Private Sponsorship involves a minimum one-year commitment to financially and practically assist a refugee family. Refugee sponsorship, at its best, is a relational investment where sponsors work together to help newcomers resettle into a local Canadian community. The result of assisting one family can have an impact for years to come, not only on those sponsored, but on future generations. We have our own story at the National Ministry Centre: April Pitman works in our Communications department. Her mother, Chhavy Jeffs, was a refugee in the 1970s. After fleeing Cambodia during the atrocities of the Pol Pot Regime, she arrived at a refugee camp in Thailand. Relatives in Canada discovered that Chhavy’s family had made it to the refugee camp. They went to Kingston Alliance Church and asked if there was anyway the
church could help. When people in the church became aware of this need, they were determined to reach out. They applied to sponsor the family. Chhavy’s mother, meanwhile, discovered that 23 family members were in the refugee camp and resolved that they shouldn’t be separated. Kingston Alliance found other churches in the city, including Bayridge Alliance, to partner with them. Soon all 23 family members arrived in Kingston and received love and care from these congregations. It is interesting to note that David Freeman (currently a C&MA vice president) was a pastor at Kingston Alliance during that time. It was during a conversation at work one day that April and David connected the dots!

FOOD AID The United Nations reports that 870 million people in the world do not have enough to eat. It also states that hunger kills more people every year than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. This happens in a world that produces enough food to feed the entire population. The World Hunger Organization explains that the problem is that many people in the world do not have sufficient land to grow food or enough money to buy food. When we become aware of needs, we are called to respond. Through
our partnership with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB), we want to engage in programming that seeks to address hunger issues.

VILLAGE SAVINGS AND LOANS Village Savings and Loans is a community-based microfinance method that is based on forming savings groups of 15-25 people who generate their own loan fund by making weekly financial contributions. This money is then used to make loans to each other. The loans are typically very small—which is much more manageable than larger external loans. This method equips those in extreme poverty with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to work as a community to increase their earning ability.
