classic never fades. And the Maldives has been a classic since the 70s, when we began to first talk about it after the opening of the first resort on the island of Kurumba in 1972. Then there were only huts with sand floors. Visitors flew to Colombo and then reached the archipelago by dhoni. Fresh water and food traveled with tourists. An uncomfortable destination but with immense charm. Today, living conditions have evolved: villas, spas, restaurants, pools. But the protagonists are still the sea and the natural setting of coral islands. Maybe for those of us with urban habits living there would become quite boring, but the stay of a week or two has an indescribable charm. I do not remember how many times I have visited there now, but every time I remain fascinated by the colors, the silence, the seabed, the fish and the starry sky. English, Italian and German travelers have always been more numerous - today joined by the Japanese, Korean and Chinese. The geography of tourism is fluid. Luxuries abound. The charm remains. The Maldives is to be enjoyed now, before some environmental mutation causes all these islands to return to the sea from whence they came. Go beyond your expectations with Resorts Magazine!

W

e arrive at the management party at the bar and restaurant Fanditha a little late and a little sweaty - of course, on bikes. The appointment is elegant, and we are served mainly chilled champagne, but there are also classic and fruit cocktails. The hot Middle Eastern and Indian canapĂŠs entertain between one chat and another. The sun is setting right in front of us - a bit veiled by thick clouds. The atmosphere is enhanced by the slight breeze that moves the ethereal dresses of elegant ladies. Time seems to stop - we are no longer in a geographic region but a state of mind. As in an impressionist painting, here each one reflects their own emotions. And the evening begins.

SPECIAL | MALDIVES

We have dinner at the Japanese restaurant Tapasake, a formal dinner in a private pavilion. The breeze continues to envelop us as the eye observes the unending range of waves. We choose the Ume menu with fish. After the Garlic Prawns, the Calamari Salad and a Mini Sushi (needless to say exceedingly fresh ), we continue with a delicate Tasmanian Salmon and reach the apotheosis with the Maldivian Lobster, King Crab and Scallops. By now satiated, a Green Tea Crème Brulée arrives just the same. The tasting menu is accompanied by Naraman Junmai Daiginjo, a nonfiltered non-pasteurized sake, slightly fruity, definitely refreshing. During our stay, we try the unsurpassed Espa (whose pavilions are revealed in an enchanted garden, the Chef’s Garden ( the garden of the restaurant chef); the Activity Bar (where, perhaps, they should change the ice cream supplier - too industrial for such a magical place) and the Reethi, the main restaurant, right next to the bar (the latter very lively and well attended in the evening). But what we remember most about out stay is the evening breeze, the total privacy of the beach, the space of the villas and the transfer in an exclusive yacht - not to mention the bike rides and getting lost in the enchanted jungle that covers the island.

SPECIAL | MALDIVES

I

t may not be starred but the culinary offerings of the Taj Exotica are definitely of high quality. The thin strip of sand that is home to the resort was once called “ Three Coconut Island. You can get there in 15 minutes, crossing a large intense turquoise lagoon. With a width of about forty meters, it seems to be floating on the ocean, surrounded by that turquoise that will later accompany us back, populating our memories of that archipelago which, as they say, recalls heaven. The path that runs through the island is a tunnel of vegetation, almost an initiatory path that starts from the jetty going to the Jiva Spa, passing by the Water Sports Center, restaurants, swimming pool and gym . A path leading to relaxation, one which reconciles and unites. An experience besides a holiday, an opportunity in a place of the mind besides the body.

SPECIAL | MALDIVES

At the restaurant 24 Degrees, Pan-Asian cuisine dominates the menu. After a great Indian experience, we try the Thai menu. Sous-chef Francis Purification prepares a tasting menu which begins with the Tom Kha Phak, the traditional coconut soup with vegetables, lemongrass and lime, spiced to perfection. Then come samples of Phad Phak Prik Thai (vegetable tempura ) and other goodies leading to the Gaeng Kiew Warn Kai, green curry with chicken as tender as it gets. The next evening we are at the Deep End, where the chef surprises us with a dessert-event. An artistic-cooking performance - at the table which, covered with a special plastic for food ¬- becomes a palette of flavors and colors together in a work that pleases the eye and the palate. The “ dome” of chocolate is great but the guests are captured by the action - unusual and creative - interpreted by the artist-chef. Going onboard the speed boat for the airport, we greet the staff deployed on the jetty. The breeze ruffles our hair as we approach Male. The symphony of colors at Taj Exotica accompanies us to the check-in.

T

he crossing takes no longer than 10 minutes. The sea is rough and the breeze strong. We hasten to avoid missing the sunset from the Edge Bar, promised to be special. On the isolated platform in the ocean, Edge is revealed for what it is, a stylish bar and restaurant, all white, dominated by a tall cover in the form of a tent and large windows. Slowly the sky turns orange and red as the sea reflects its deep hues adding others. The color palette evolves slowly while we are served a Chili Ginger Mojito enhanced by the spicy note of chili added by the Indian barman. The colors blend as do the flavors as night falls and we are ready for dinner.

The Mauritian chef, Pravin Gobardhun, expertly prepares the ingredients of the Indian Ocean with contemporary culinary techniques in the name of freshness. Taking advantage of the variety of fish in the archipelago, he creates flavorful dishes with strong ethnic nuances. Well-structured, well presented. When it is night we go down to the adjoining Subsix, an original underwater glass-walled bar. Here the roles are reversed and the guests live in an aquarium while being observed by the fish with their curious stares. A dj mixes trendy songs while the bartender entertains even the most demanding guests. The Fahrenheit, the open-air bar on top of the all-daydining restaurant, entertains with great music and great atmosphere. The Lime Spa - along with fitness center - will assist us with its rituals in putting our bodies back in shape the next day. And sports enthusiasts will appreciate the offer of the Water Activities Center. Upon departure, taking off with the seaplane facing Male, the dazzling blue of the lagoon leaves memories that will last a long time.

SPECIAL | MALDIVES

At dusk, in absolute peace, from the large windows of our villa or lying on the terrace or by the pool, we enjoy the sunsets which come in a sequence of reds that are always different. We are lucky because from our suite we do not have to take the buggy to the Spa by Clarins, the only one in the Maldives. The novelty is the Welcome Touch, a pre-treatment introduced by the director of spa Luciano Porcu. It consists of a short and gentle massage for the feet, neck and eyes while sipping herbal tea with mango peels and vanilla pods. All this is a prelude to the Peace massage. Never was a name more appropriate! If only it would never end. After the sunset sunset, we have a romantic dinner by candlelight in the restaurant Falhumaa, with a pleasant suprise: attracted by the dim lights, a leopard shark approaches; it seems strange to say, but it is beautiful. But the day is not yet over and we go back to the villa to enjoy vintage champagne with the freshest of strawberries, admiring the full moon reflected in the blue of the marvelous sea.

f 13 hours of flight is a lot, keep in mind that to reach the Sheraton Full Moon it takes only 15 minutes by speedboat. A stroll. A nice walk that catapults us into a world of color and atmosphere far away from the urban rush. If the gray asphalt causes some irritation then maybe the turquoise lagoon at this resort will put you in a good mood. Rasheed is our guide and with him we discover all corners of the island and the resort. A thank you in all languages of the world for this unforgettable Maldivian, so patient and enthusiastic about his country.

Time to put on our swim wear to enjoy the warm waters of the Indian Ocean which are already cuddling us. This resort is located on one of the largest islands of the archipelago. But this does not mean a lot of people and a little peace, far from it. The Sheraton Full Moon is completely immersed in nature and its various room categories guarantee a relaxing atmosphere appreciated even more if accompanied by the pleasant hands of a Shine SPA therapist. Placed on a small adjacent island, the spa is the perfect frame for this amazing setting. Agatha, the SPA director, is from the faraway Poland, but now she is a perfect Maldivian. Beige dominates in this peaceful corner and leaving our treatment suites after listening to only the music of the sea in the background, we relax. However, the most important thing is that our skin is undeniably enviable. One of the glories of the resort is the refined Sea Salt Restaurant. Ours dinner is perfect: delicious dishes by candlelight immersed in a romantic and unique atmosphere. In short, a lovely place. Paradise really cannot wait!

f I were to write a postcard from the Maldives, surely, it would have as a background Como Maalifushi. I move in an enchanting atmosphere amid what I have always dreamed of: nature, peace, relaxation and exclusivity. In fact, COMO Maalifushi is the perfect synthesis of it all. From the villa I admire the coral sand which is never too hot and incredibly white. I feel the inviting whisper of an unpolluted sea, the faithful companion of days rife with sweet contemplation, just barely interrupted by countless water activities always available to guests.

Cocoa Island by COMO South Male Atoll

An island to live barefoot, far from all formality, in the most natural way possible. The sandbanks, the coral barrier, an ideal mix for an informal destination under the sign of wellbeing.

t is a thrill at sunset to forget civilization and sit hundreds of meters from the resort awaiting the tide. The moon with its silvery reflection on the surface of the ocean made wavy by a gentle breeze. The distant lights of the resort, alone with the music of the wind. Difficult to forget such unique moments. The history of Cocoa Island begins in the 80s when the first bungalows were built with natural materials and in a craftsmanlike way. This was the beginning of a long story which has brought the Island to be one of the destinations managed by COMO Hotels. An island to live barefoot, far from all formality, in the most natural way possible - the same way the culinary offering is natural, where Asian flavors combine with the traditions of southern India and international inspirations, giving life to an interesting menu rich in fish and biological vegetables and spices. The COMO Shambala Menu, vegetarian and designed to complete the spa experience such that the holiday is an occasion for wellbeing and getting in shape, is very appreciated. The Dhoni Suites and the villas are made of wood. We find natural materials everywhere. Traditional design, hence with particular attention to integration with the principal element: the ocean. In fact, all of the accommodations are on stilts with direct access to the water. The technological devices are noteworthy, from wi-fi to home theatre, to wide-screen TVs, to Nespresso machines, always appreciated by coffee-lovers. But Cocoa Island is experienced above all outside, in nature, in the ocean. Or perhaps, strolling or dining on a sandbank which extends far out into the ocean.

O

ne island one resort, this is the rule, but few resorts have their own spa on another island. A few minutes by dhoni gets us to this sanctuary, right in front of the resort, where we can indulge in the care of the body ... and mind. Treatments and rituals are inspired by the Asian tradition, and the products used are natural ones by Sodashi. Worth noting is The Night Spa, a ritual of two and a half hours during moonlit nights which is performed outdoors. The cuisine of Kerala proposed at the Indian restaurant Baraabaru must be experienced. Enthusiasts can also attend the cooking classes held by chef Kapil Sharma. Spices, curry, woks, tandooris will no longer be a mystery to anyone. A good part of the dishes on the menu are reworkings of recipes of the chef’s family. In front of the Reef Club Restaurant guests can now find the great Serenity Pool, added two years ago . Prohibited to those under 14, it is a peaceful place where you can enjoy tranquility and privacy. Available to guests is the Reef Club Pool menu with pizzas cooked in a wood oven, sandwiches and salads.

Two new features are available to curious guests: the Seabob, a sort of torpedo moved by an electric motor which carries the passenger and plows through the waves. It can also carry the guest underwater in apnea for several seconds. Using it makes you feel like a dolphin. More adventurous is the Jetpack. Already widespread in the USA, it remains a new attraction in the Maldives. A flying machine driven by a jet of water generated by a jetski. Once you learn to use it, it rises above the surface of the sea and permits you to fly around. Both are exciting and adrenaline producing. Not everyone knows that the Maldives is a perfect destination for surfers . Especially between June and September, the so-called off-season, the waves are more interesting. In fact, it is precisely in August that the annual Surfing Champions Trophy is celebrated at Kuda Huraa. At that time, the Explorer is stationed at the resort and is the base for the event. At guests’ disposal all year round is the package Surf’s Up! in two versions: for beginners and for experts.

he materials are simple: marbleized cement, wood, glass. The design is contemporary throughout with exotic touches, above all, in the roofs. The new Estate, a villa with three bedrooms brings the number of villas available to the 103. This is definitely the largest and the most private. In the far southeast of the island with a hundred feet of private beach, two pools - one of which is on the first floor - a large kitchen and butler’s apartment, it is definitely the largest unit available in the Maldives. In addition to the space for six adults, there is also enough for up to five children. Given that the Maldives is opening more and more to families, in both of the Four Seasons family rooms have been introduced. These are beach villas with a separate space for the kids, with their own bathroom and TV. For those who are traveling with young children or with a couple of friends, the Two-Bedroom Family Beach Bungalows have also been added.

The Ayurvedic Immersions (7, 14 or 21 days) are the approach routes to the ancient Indian science of life, which include meetings with resident Ayurvedic physicians as well as a series of treatments and yoga sessions. Our doctor, in explaining this ancient Indian medical discipline, studies us. He checks our pulse. He questions us about our lifestyle. After an hour, he has identified our dosha type. This type of body/personality stems from the five elements (space, air, fire, water, earth). Combinations of two are chosen to make up the three dosha types: Vata (space and air), Pitta (fire and water), Kapha (water and earth). Each of us is a combination of two doshas, in varying percentages. The ingredients for the treatments (among them the oil) will be prepared accordingly.
