LETTER from

THE EDITOR A

s I wrap up this September issue, I have a few thoughts: 1) How has the summer gone by so quickly?; 2) I’ve loved being back here at the Resident and helping to make it even bigger and better; and 3) this issue was incredibly fun and exciting to work on—in many ways, a dream come true. That may sound like an exaggeration, but here’s the thing: This issue brought me the opportunity to meet and interview Renée Elise Goldsberry, one of the stars of Hamilton, which is the most talked-about Broadway show I can remember. First of all, to say Renée is talented is a huge understatement. She’s a brilliant singer and actress. She’s also one of the warmest, most down-to-earth people you can ever have the pleasure of meeting. Then there’s the show itself. It’s hilarious and heartbreaking, moving and uplifting—it’s truly magnificent. There’s a reason the Obamas, the Clintons, and countless celebrities have flocked to it. I can’t really overemphasize how much I loved it—nor can I overstate how much I enjoyed talking to Renée about her role in Hamilton and her life as a Broadway star, mother, wife, and New Yorker. Of course the rest of the issue was pretty exciting too; in our search for the best fashions

of the season and the top picks for fall films, art exhibits, books, theater, TV shows, and music, I learned exactly how I’ll be keeping myself busy this autumn. Finally, I’m a tropical-travel junkie—palm trees and pina coladas make me weak in the knees. I got to travel (vicariously and actually) to some of the prettiest warm-weather destinations through this September issue, and that made me a very happy editor.

My hope is that this issue inspires you to embrace the arts of the season in all their forms, book plane tickets to paradise, and shop ‘til you drop. And if you haven’t yet, go see Hamilton immediately. Beg, borrow, steal, or sell your firstborn if you must. You’ll thank me.

all is fast approaching. We’ll catch a glimpse of the leaves changing from bright green to golden and auburn hues, while overlooking Central Park. But what we’re really focused on as the cooler weather begins to roll in are the trends hitting the runways this September. Whether you’ve got seats booked for New York Fashion Week or not, here at the Resident we’ve got the inside-look at what you should be wearing this season.

Jean Queen: Your Ultimate Jean Survival Guide This year we’ve scoured the runways and we’re seeing jean, jean and more jean. Denim is always in style but this season it’s everything: jackets, shirts, skirts and especially overalls. Check out our favorites below.

Our Picks:Try on Dsquared 2’s Cool Girl Jeans for a distressed boyfriend look (Gwen Stefani’s go-to); Mother the Looker Skinny Ankle Fray Jeans (worn by everyone from Kim Kardashian and Zoe Saldana to Heidi Klum) and be on trend this season with Le High 70’s flares by Frame Denim (seen on Chrissy Teigen). Feeling adventurous? Throwback to the 90’s and put on a show in Current/Elliott The Carpenter Denim Overalls. We’ve spotted Emma Watson, Rita Ora and even Beyonce wearing overalls this season. Look classy in a denim skirt with over the knee boots at Balenciaga. Or be edgy and cool, while still keeping warm in this bleached and studded coat by Coach.

American Style in NYC, This Fall and Beyond By Hillary Latos

N

ew York City is known as one of the unequivocal fashion capitals of the world, and the perfect embodiment of American style. It’s the breeding ground for some of the most iconic American labels in history, and a hotbed for the next generation of fashion icons. On the eve of New York Fashion Week, when the most anticipated styles of Spring 2016 will grace the runways, we spoke to fashion influencers to get their perspective on the industry and what’s hot for fall.

Velvet: SoCal-Cool on the UES As dress codes in the workplace have become more relaxed, the easygoing-yet-polished look has been happily embraced by New Yorkers. Velvet perfectly represents that effortlessly chic Southern California aesthetic. Launched in 1997 by friends Jenny Graham and Toni Spencer, Velvet is produced solely in the U.S., and the brand can be found in leading department stores and boutiques nationwide, and now in Velvet boutiques on Madison Avenue and in Southampton.

Resident Magazine: Tell me a bit about your decision to launch in the Hamptons and NY this year.

RM: How did you get started in designing and working together?

Jenny Graham: We’ve always wanted an East Coast presence. The whole idea of the Hamptons fits perfectly with our customer, so we jumped at the chance to be there. The Madison Ave. store was a long time coming. We waited and waited to get the best location we possibly could; being on the Upper East Side is a dream come true. We knew where we wanted to be and what we wanted our store to look like. We’ve been planning for some time!

friend’s dinner party. We immediately hit it off, couldn’t stop talking, and before long starting plotting how we could work together. We have a very fluid, productive design relationship. We’re sort of two sides of the same coin.

RM: How do you think the LA style translates to NY?

Toni Spencer: LA style in general is pretty misunderstood, and I think in the past it’s been unfairly dismissed. There’s no doubt a laid-back influence to it, thanks to the easygoing way of life, but that doesn’t mean we’re all wafting around in old tees and frayed cut-offs. To me, the LA aesthetic is really about understated, cool style. Girls here have a very unique way of putting stuff together that looks utterly effortless. I think the fashion world has really come to appreciate this lately. To answer your question, I think LA style translates perfectly to NY. What New Yorker doesn’t want to look understated, cool, and chic?

JG:: We met back in the late 90s at a mutual

RM: What do you think are some of the key

pieces and silhouettes for fall?

TS:

The peacoat is our favorite jacket silhouette for fall—we did a long version and a shorter, blazer style. The oversized, slouchy boyfriend cardigan with the flirty, girly dress is also a look we love, especially when it’s transitioning and you don’t want to bundle up in loads of layers, and you still want to feel super cute. The dolman sleeve sweater is also a great retro 70s silhouette that’s very on-trend, but classic. It’s a great way to look chic and casual, which is kind of our whole M.O.

RM: What was your inspiration for the fall collection? JG:

We’re inspired by eclectic and wideranging sources. It could be a movie or an exhibit we attend; all our cultural scavenging sort of meshes together on the mood board, and out of that we build our collection. For this season, we were loving Catherine Deneuve in Belle de Jour, Ali McGraw in Love Story, and images of Marianne Faithful in her Mick era. We were thinking about classic Americana and Native American textiles, hence the plaid and fringe. There’s also a slightly preppy influence. All these ideas are filtered through our signature, laidback California aesthetic.

Etienne Aigner: Reclaiming and Revitalizing a Heritage Brand Etienne Aigner was originally a bookbinder during WWI, later designing bespoke handbags for haute couture houses such as Christian Dior and Hermes, before launching his eponymous line. The line experienced ebbs and flows over the last 50 years, becoming over-distributed and diluted—and disappeared for a number of years—until its latest resuscitation last year under the design direction of Daniela Bardazzi. To keep the heritage of the brand, while making it current and simultaneously launching a ready-to-wear line, Bardazzi spends time trying to rebuild Aigner’s archives through vintage shopping and careful research.

Resident Magazine:

Who or what was your inspiration behind the latest collection?

Daniela Bardazzi: We were listening to Patty Smith while designing, and we were working with a lot of texture. We chose a waxy finish leather and created a moto jacket with a croc emboss, and used it in our handbags and shoes. Our imagery was ‘what if Patty Smith had to open for the Ballet Russe; what would she wear?’ Our version of a Chelsea boot was also inspired by her, with a block heel, almond toe, and heavy welts.

RM:

What do you think will be the key

shapes and materials for fall?

DB: We were opting for more opulence this season, using the phrase ‘casual opulence,’ so you can get up and go anywhere, but there’s an ease to it. We used a lot of neoprene—but a more refined version that’s thinner and lighter, which was used in dresses and pants that felt structured yet soft. We loved that juxtaposition with a refined silhouette.

RM: What are some of your favorite pieces? DB:

heritage piece and made it in a moto way. My favorite shoe is a flat boot with a scrunched ankle that is very beatnik-inspired.

RM: How have you woven the heritage of Etienne Aigner in the line to speak to today’s women? DB: He had an industrialist spirit about him, and fashioned a lot of hardware from bits and hinges and found objects, and we kept his signature buckles that go onto every bag, and metal keepers that he always used; everything has a function.

I really fell for the crop pant paired with a longer vest. We’re all about the saddle bag, as well. We brought it back from a

Charriol: The Long-Awaited American Debut As the daughter of luxury jeweler Phillipe Charriol, who established his namesake luxury watch and jewelry line in 1983, Coralie Charriol has grown up in the jewelry industry. The brand’s signature pieces draw on Celtic culture, using steel and gold cable. They’ve been sold worldwide, but are launching the full line for the first time in the U.S this season. In her role as Creative Director, Coralie has reinvigorated the brand, adding a contemporary twist to the established lines, drawing from her cosmopolitan, jetset sensibility.

Resident Magazine:

What challenges have you faced entering the U.S. Market for the full line?

Corolie Charriol: Charriol has been in the U.S. for the past 30 years, selling watches and gold jewelry. However, for the first time in the U.S. we are selling the global steel and silver Charriol jewelry collection, which is the iconic trademark of the brand. It’s the collection that I have been designing for the past few years. There are always challenges when introducing a new line, but that’s the exciting part. We have planned several launch parties, exclusive trunk shows, and a global initiative promoting higher education for girls and women.

RM: How have you evolved the brand and direction? CC: As the Creative Director, designing is a big part of my role in the company. Each jewelry collection is a result of my own life

and travel experiences, interpreting those into a collection of pieces that are luxurious yet practical. The focus is on the Charriol customer—always thinking of what they want next, and how to put a piece on their wrist, around their neck, or on their finger that will inspire them to be the person they want to be.

CC: My style is a mix between European and

RM:

I love things that are unique—things that make a statement. I love finding the newest next ‘it’ piece. My style is chic but relaxed.

What are some of your favorite pieces from the collection?

CC: The must-have pieces this year are the Forever bangles & St-Tropez 35 watch, a special new style of the popular St-Tropez collection, with a moon phase complication. The Forever bangles come in different colors and sizes, and I love stacking and collecting them—having an arm full of bangles. The beauty of the bangles is that they all match and can be worn together.

RM: How would you describe your overall aesthetic?

American, as I was born in Hawaii and raised between Hong-Kong, Paris, London, and New York. I have learned to mix my heritages. My father comes from France and has taught me all the good things in life. My mother, who was a model and interior designer, has taught me about aesthetic.

RM:

What do you like most about fall in

NYC?

CC: Fall in NYC in the best!!

It’s always like an Indian summer. I love sneaking out to the beach or upstate for weekends, picking apples and eating roasted corn. The city feels cool and crisp, and so alive!

Suite Sensation Top picks from a spirited round of awards-show gift-suite hopping. By Darralynn Hutson

G

ifting suites and pamper lounges have grown in popularity and have become an expected and important part of every award show, especially for celebrity publicists looking to introduce clients to new brands. While the goal in return for new companies is to get their names into the hands of these influencers, as well as the media, gifting suites have become more diverse in their presentations and their locations. For the lucky few and their entourage who get invited to them, these oases of freebies include anything from technology driven cyborgs to hand-made haircare products and crowd pleasers. Although offering products to influencers is nothing new, the approach has changed over the years—yet still remains largely all about the products. Here’s a glimpse at some of the best discovered new brands while Resident went Gift Suite Hopping.

1.

Illumination PR invited us to the BETX’ Official Celebrity Gift Lounge presented by Fandango, which opened its doors in the LA Live Convention Center Center’s downtown location, where all the BET Awards and BET Experience action took place on Saturday June 27th and Sunday June 28th. Offering gifts from Sean John, Hennessy, Reebok, Cover Girl, CURLS, STARZ, Satin Lined Caps, and Express Smile Atlanta, this official suite introduced us to a great couple who created a drinking game called “Never Have I Ever.” Neverhaveiever.org has amassed a pretty nice following, with over 14k suggested statements to be added to the next edition of the competition.

The suite and lounge were powered by Pynk Magazine and meticulously included everything girls love: A seated, buffet-style 12-course brunch with fresh omelets and waffle station, on-site makeup application, eyelash bar, flowing cocktails, manicures, pedicures, and massages, in addition to three rooms and a massive hallway of gifting.

Another delightful gift came as a sweet treat from a mother and daughter team, “So Unique Candy Apples,” specializing in a selection of flavored candy apples. We were able to take selfies with celebrities, including professional boxer Floyd Mayweather, who hosted a Genius Talk at the BET Experience that afternoon, Karrueche Tran, and Soulja Boy, who rode a cyborg craft throughout the suite to everyone’s amazement.

2. Anje Collins, Celebrity Publicist CJ Carter, and team invited us to experience the Luxe PR Groups’ 3rd Annual afternoon of Glam Beauty Brunch and Gifting Lounge, called their BET Awards Edition, held at West Hollywood’s Andaz Hotel and co- hosted by Tameka “Tiny” Harris and Demetria McKinney.

34 • Resident August 2015

A portion of the proceeds will benefit The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. The Gifting Suite organization, founded by Tiny’s Tequila, offered gifts that included one of our favorites— Drip Swimwear, a one-piece wrap-around

swimsuit line for plus-sized women, coming in exotic fabrics and lively colors. Tiger Paw Beverages, Inc. produced a line of Jimi Hendrix Brand alcohol, which is very tasty indeed.

3. The Powerhouse Agency invited us to two of their events, including the chance to experience the new cyborgs firsthand at the Cyborg Lounge, and their Rolls Royce ESPYS Trendsetters Celebrity Gifting Suite, hosted at Rolls Royce Beverly Hills O’Gara Coach dealership with The Velvet Rope. Immediately upon walking in, the ambiance screamed wealth. Celebs were treated to Rolls Royce escorts that picked them up and dropped them off at the front door, which was transformed into a suite of gifting vendors. The most notable favorites were the LA-based sunglass company, CaliSons, makers of handcrafted, woodcarved stylish shades, whose owners shared stories of their Venice lineage and the challenges of getting up and running. The brand that clearly spent the most in merchandising and branding was J Beverly Hills by Juan Juan. His gifting included several pieces from his men’s haircare collection, including moisturizing shampoo, daily conditioner, molding putty, shaper, strong hold, shave gel, lotion, and a beautiful coffee table product book in a branded bag. It all just felt so classy.

T

he beauty and craftsmanship of a signature Jackie Rogers design is unmistakable. Each Jackie Rogers piece is tailored to the body shape of every individual client, ensuring that no single design is exactly the same. For over 35 years, Jackie Rogers couture collections have been dressing the world’s TheRun most powerful and sophisticated men and women. Rogers’ fashion design career began while working in menswear with her boutique on Madison Avenue. The store became a men’s club, with movie star Jack Nicholson and philanthropist Winthrop Rockefeller among her elite clientele. In the 1970s, she began designing womenswear, and launched her boutique in Palm Beach, Florida. Located on Worth Avenue—considered the Rodeo Drive of Palm Beach—the boutique Tone her House allows jet-setting clientele to be fitted for

a Jackie Rogers original design, or they can shop original ready-to-wear looks. On the walls hang large photographs of Jackie from her acting and modeling days, each one with its own unique story. From gallivanting across Europe with royalty to movie stills from her role in Fellini’s 8 ½, to her shots in a serpent hat designed by Bill Blass, the shopping experience includes customers on the amazing adventures she has taken throughout her life. Within the store, Rogers’ signature dresses, blazers, and jumpsuits line the racks around the perimeter of the boutique. Jackie Rogers is best-known for her fearlessness when it comes to fabric selection, as she’s not afraid to use materials others stray from. She frequently makes gorgeous designs with silk satin-faced organza, which is notoriously difficult to work with, to create beautifullytiered ball gowns and jumpsuits. She also uses more humble fabrics, such as burlap or

seersucker, to create luxurious pieces that include her signature structured jackets. Every Jackie Rogers piece is conceived, designed, and manufactured entirely in New York City, in their midtown showroom. For Fall 2015, Jackie Rogers is returning to her menswear design roots, creating a line of tailored jackets using burlap. Along with her Worth Avenue boutique, her designs are also available for purchase at her Southampton shop on Jobs Lane, by appointment at her Manhattan showroom, online on her website, and at fine retailers everywhere.

Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit

September 5, 6, 7 and 12, 13 Various locations east of Washington Square Park, NYC wsoae.org In spring 1931, Jackson Pollock took some paintings down to the street from his Greenwich Village studio—also his home—in a desperate attempt to cover his rent. Before long, Village artist Willem De Kooning stood next to him and their venture captured local attention. Today the Outdoor Art Exhibit is a fall and spring event where artists both regional and foreign line the streets around Washington Square with fine art, photography, crafts, and sculpture. Theater, cabaret, burlesque performers, jugglers, stilt dancers, fire eaters, jazz bands, artists, and poets will ring in Halloween on October 31st inside TNC’s four theater spaces, its lobby, and the block of East Tenth Street between First and Second Avenues. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s bio-musical based on the life and death of Alexander Hamilton has already made history as a musical theater game-changer, and has attracted the attention and accolades of movie stars and presidents—past and present. Its recent move from The Public Theater to Broadway is as inspiring as its hip-hop driven soundtrack; if you see one show this season, make it Hamilton.

Sam Shepard is one of our greatest playwrights. Nina Arianda and Sam Rockwell, its stars, are master thespians. Together, it’s what theater dreams are made of. Do not miss this.

It’s easy to forget that Bruce Willis was an up-andcoming stage actor who studied with Stella Adler before he was a megastar. He returns to his theater roots this fall, in William Goldman’s adaption of Stephen King’s classic about one writer and a very, very disturbed fan.

Gloria and Emilio Estefan are singer-songwriters who changed the record business and stayed married. Two good reasons to catch their bio-musical. A third reason: Its familiar, catchy tunes are backed by a multiple-award-winning creative team.

David Mamet’s admiration for Glenn Beck is rather strange, but the man can write. Besides, no-one yells like Al Pacino, and his long-awaited return to Broadway already has a lot of people dashing for a seat at this limited-run production.

Fear The Walking Dead (AMC)

Ray Donovan (Showtime)

Described as Lost meets It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, this single-camera comedy from writers Justin and Jordan Shipley and producer Jesse Hara follows an extremely diverse group of plane-crash survivors who must adjust to life on a remote island. The absence of things like social media and Wi-Fi make for an interesting change in social dynamics. Zach Cregger and Ginger Gonzaga play the leads. Premiere date TBA.

Based on the legendary Walking Dead, this companion series is set in L.A. when the zombie outbreak begins and during the time Rick Grimes was in a coma. Expect a big change from the original though; this drama focuses on a family and the problems it faces in the midst of a world in crisis. Premiered August 23.

Returning in the fall for its third season, Ray Donovan not only broke Showtime records for most-viewed premiere, but earned two Golden Globe nominations and numerous other awards in its two-year lifetime. Not surprisingly, it has gone on to produce quite a large, and loyal, fan base. Liev Schreiber stars as Ray, a professional “fixer” for the rich and famous in L.A., but not without a hectic past following him from his hometown of Boston. Jon Voight and Paula Malcomson also star. If you missed the July premier, be sure to catch it on Showtime on Demand. Premiere date of Season 4 TBA.

1. Otello Current events sometimes seep into the most conservative of artistic institutions. The Metropolitan Opera is opening its season with Verdi’s “Otello.” Although it has been staged here for over a century, there will be one difference: The title character will not appear with dark makeup. The opera will undoubtedly have dramatic and musical clout; the title role will be played by tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko, who was an intense Don Jose in “Carmen” last season. Soprano Sonya Yoncheva, Desdemona in the production, had one of those star-is-born experiences last season. The Met contacted her at her home in Switzerland only weeks after she had given birth to her son and asked her to fill in for the lead in “La Boheme,” so she quickly learned the role. She received rave reviews. Baritone Željko Lučić (an expert at playing heavies) is Iago. Director Bartlett Sher is moving the action to the late 19th century and Yannick NézetSéguin will conduct.

2. Eric Owens The superb bass-baritone Eric Owens is Artist-in-Residence at the New York Philharmonic this season. He will show off his versatility in a series of concerts, singing Wagner, Mahler, theater music, and even the Grinch. The first of his concerts, at which he is both performer and curator, is “In Their Footsteps: Great African American Singers and Their Legacy” on October 14 and 15. This will be a tribute to black vocalists who

rose to prominence despite racial barriers. The four being honored are William Warfield, Betty Allen, George Shirley, and Marian Anderson. The program at Avery Fisher Hall will include spirituals, excerpts from “Treemonisha,” “Porgy and Bess,” and Mahler’s “Songs of a Wayfarer.” In addition to Owens, the vocalists at the concert will be sopranos Janai Brugger and Laquita Mitchell, mezzo-soprano Marietta Simpson, and tenor Russell Thomas.

3. Bill Withers Withers is one of the most mysterious figures in American popular music. Plagued by a stutter throughout his childhood, he taught himself to play guitar and started writing songs in his 20’s. Music executive Clarence Avant heard a demo and signed him up. Withers soon had a string of hit songs, starting with “Ain’t No Sunshine,” followed by “Lean on Me.” After about eight years, he became disenchanted with the music business and stopped writing and performing. Withers will be honored at Carnegie Hall, a concert titled “Lean on Him,” on October 1st by an all-star lineup, including Aloe Blacc, Amos Lee, Michael McDonald, Dr. John, Keb’ Mo’, Gregory Porter, Kathy Mattea and Ledisi. The great man himself is set to appear and profits from the concert will benefit the Stuttering Association for the Young.

1741 and written for the harpsichord, has been played on different instruments and in different styles. It has been transcribed for organ, string trio, guitar, harp and brass quartet, to name a few. Now, Joe Chindamo has a new version for violin and piano, which he recorded with Zoe Black. He has said about the venture: “When Zoe asked me if I would write a part for her, the only self-imposed rule was that I would not alter a single note Bach wrote, and decided to adhere to Bach’s language and aesthetic.” Pianist Chindamo and violinist Black will perform the Goldberg Variations at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall on Wednesday, September 30th at 8:00 p.m.

5. The Cookers “Night of the Cookers” is a classic jazz album, recorded at Club La Marchal in Brooklyn in 1965 by trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan. The Cookers, named after the famous session, is a hard bop group of master musicians—Billy Harper on tenor sax, Eddie Henderson on trumpet, David Weiss on trumpet, George Cables on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, Billy Hart on drums, and new member Donald Harrison, replacing Craig Handy on alto sax. Their latest album on Motema is “Time and Time Again.” This is a band that comes to play. If you want to hear classic driving jazz, come to Jazz at Lincoln Center between September 10 and 13.

Curtain Call Exciting Off-Broadway Offerings This Fall By Barry Bassis

For some of the most innovative and exciting theater, Off-Broadway beckons this season: 1. Eclipsed The Public Theater is presenting the New York premiere of “Eclipsed” by playwright/ actress Dani Gurira, directed by Liesl Tommy. Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o will star. The drama is set in Liberia during the civil war in 2003. The central characters are four women held captive by the insurgents fighting President Charles Taylor. They are all “wives” of the rebel leader and refer to themselves

I, he volunteered in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and died in the Battle of Loos in 1915, when he was only 29. “The New Morality” is a satirical comedy set on a houseboat on the Thames in 1911 during an exceptionally hot summer. The husband on one houseboat begins paying too much attention to the wife of his neighbor. This sets off a chain of events that disturbs the serenity of the riverboat community. The play was not performed during Chapin’s lifetime. “The New Morality” is running until October 11. Christian Campbell

Number 1 (Helena) is the first to be captured and number 4 is a 15-year old girl (to whom Helena has given shelter and tries to protect from the inevitable sexual slavery). Their behavior ranges from solidarity with their peers to joining in the rampant violence.

Belgian director Ivo van Hove has two productions headed to New York from London. Broadway audiences will be able to catch his Olivier Award-winning “A View from the Bridge.” As part of 2015 Next Wave Festival, BAM will present van Hove’s production of Sophocles’ “Antigone,” which ran at London’s Barbican Theater. The Mint Theater has a distinguished record of finding forgotten plays and giving them sparkling productions. The fall season is beginning with “The New Morality” by Harold Chapin, directed by Jonathan Bank (the Mint’s artistic director). Chapin was born in Brooklyn in 1886, but at age three his actress mother brought him to England, where he became an actor at age 7, and later a stage manager and playwright. At the beginning of World War

“Antigone” will be running at BAM’s Harvey Theater from September 24 to October 4.

4. Lazarus How about one more Ivo van Hove production? New York Theatre Workshop will present a new musical, “Lazarus,” inspired by “The Man Who Fell to Earth.” David Bowie starred in the movie. The lead role of the alien in the stage version will be played by Michael C. Hall. Bowie has composed new songs for the show and re-arranged some of his earlier pieces. The book is by Enda Walsh. “Lazarus” starts previews on November 18 and opens on December 7.

5. Ripcord Manhattan Theatre Club is about to present its sixth collaboration with David LindsayAbaire. “Ripcord,” his latest comedy, will be directed by David Hyde Pierce. “Ripcord” is set in the Bristol Place Assisted Living Facility. Abby (Holland Taylor) has one of the nicer rooms, but is saddled with a new roommate, Marilyn (Marylouise Burke). They embark on a deadly turf battle.

“Eclipsed” is running from September 29 November 8.

King Kreon decrees that Antigone’s dead brother Polyneikes should not be buried because he was a traitor. Antigone and Kreon debate their opposing views: She says she was “born to share in love, not hatred” while he places good

This sounds like a throwback to LindsayAbaire’s earlier absurdist comedies (which, like many of his works, starred Marylouise Burke). With the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Rabbit Hole,” he moved into serious drama (about a family suffering the loss of its young child) and followed that with the sensitive “Good People.” Previews for “Ripcord” begin on Tuesday, September 29, with opening set for Tuesday, October 20.

Austin Stark With The Runner, the Filmmaker Breaks New Ground By Skylar Lewis

Paper Street Films

A

ustin Stark is a writer, director, producer, and founding partner of the NYC-based film production company, Paper Street Films, and a New Yorker to look out for. Over the past eight years, he has produced hits like Infinitely Polar Bear with Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana, Tony Kaye’s Detachment, starring Adrien Brody, the 2010 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award winner Happythankoumoreplease, and Werner Herzog’s My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done? “I think I’m a strong leader and a creative person, which for a filmmaker is an essential combination,” Stark says of his success. His love for the film industry sparked when he began to surround himself with friends who were studying filmmaking at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. At the time, Stark was 19-years-old, studying to be a fictional writer at Georgetown University. The summer of his sophomore year he wrote his first screenplay. As is the fate of most first scripts, it was never produced, but it made

50 • Resident September 2015

him realize his true calling. Stark, now 36, resides in New York City and finds himself at the most successful point in his career.

Nicolas Cage in The Runner In August, Stark made his writing and directorial debut with the release of The Runner, which stars Nicolas Cage, Sarah Paulson, Peter Fonda, and Connie Nielsen. Stark says The Runner is an American story—a fictional portrait of an idealistic but flawed congressman named Colin Pryce, played by Cage. On one level, it’s the story of a politician struggling to rebuild his life after a sex scandal destroys his career. On another, it’s a meditation on the archetype of the politician: The public versus private persona, idealism versus compromise. But, at its core, the film is about a man’s hunger to become a great leader without sacrificing his beliefs. The film is set in the aftermath of the 2010 BP oil spill, which devastated the Gulf Coast. “It’s exciting to me that this is the first narrative film to tackle the spill,” said Stark. “But with that comes great responsibility, and I’ve tried to portray

the region during the disaster as accurately as I could.”

The BP Oil Spill Stark’s original concept for the film did not actually involve the BP oil spill. The idea took shape after he spent several weeks doing research for the project in Louisiana during the summer of 2011, realizing that a year after the catastrophe it was still on the forefront of everyone’s minds in New Orleans. “It felt organic to set the film in that time and place,” Stark explains. “The Gulf Coast during the oil spill becomes a metaphor for the life Colin Pryce is forced to rebuild. The story also provides insight into the disaster.” Stark says he has accomplished his goal. “Regardless of how The Runner performs at the box office, I’m very proud of my film. With the current political climate, there has never been a better time for The Runner.”

Jacqueline de Ribes: The Art of Style By Yvonna Russell

“She is the pearl in the king of Poland’s ear, the Queen of Sheba’s tallow-drop emerald, Diane de Poitiers’ crescent tiara, the Ring of the Nibelungen. arisian-born Jacqueline Beaumont owned two dresses when she married Édouard, Vicomte de Ribes. Long before that, during the occupation, Jacqueline and her siblings were sent to her grandfather’s summer home in Hedaye with a nanny. The Scottish nanny was arrested and sent to a labor camp, and clothes and food were rationed by tickets. The children and a French governess were left to fend for themselves in a cottage, while the Gestapo lived in the main house. After her thirteenth birthday, Jacqueline was sent by her parents, Count and Countess de Beaumont, to the convent Le Oiseaux in Vermiuel. In 1947, Jacqueline met her husband—a war hero and scion from a noble family of financiers—by chance at a friend’s luncheon in Cote Basque. As the newly-married wife of the vicomte, strict rules of decorum were

to be followed; work and pursuits outside the home were forbidden. She and Édouard moved in with his parents at their 19th century townhouse in the Eight Arrondissement and soon began a family. The couple had two children, Jean and Elizabeth. Jacqueline began to push the dangerous and delicious boundaries of high society, tradition, celebrity, and reinvention. Her ascension into the highest of international social circles began when she befriended the Mexican-French heir and art patron, Charles de Bestegui. She was invited to the party of the century, his “Fete des Fetes” ball in Venice. At the time, dress party and masquerade balls of the beau monde had themes, and elaborate costumes were de rigueur. For the “Fete des Fetes,” Jacqueline arrived mysteriously with the Princesses Caetani and

Jacqueline designed her “Madwoman of Challiot” costume from shreds of couture gowns from Helene Rochas’ “My Fair Lady Ball”. La grande dame embraced her new role, accepting invitations to balls around the world, including Truman Capote’s “Black and White Ball,” “The Patiño Ball”, “La Dolce Vita Ball,” “The Oriental Ball,” “Come as You Desire,” and the “Proust Ball.” The stylish Parisian redefined l’art de vivre in her circle. She began a lifelong friendship with Desse’s assistant, Valentino, who earned a few francs drawing sketches for her own fashions. Jacqueline made toiles with the help of a seamstress from Balenciaga, after cutting the patterns in the attic of her house. Oleg Cassini, whom she met at “The Knickerbocker Ball,” would turn the muslin creations into a finished garment. An avid skier, Jacqueline was a regular at St. Anton, wearing her own chic ski wear. Cassandra Seidenfeld Rises in The Night of 75 Stars By Isaiah Negron

I

t’s been a busy summer for Cassandra Seidenfeld, who went from sharing the stage with Alec Baldwin and Bob Balaban in Guild Hall’s production of The Night of 75 Stars to playing a major role in The Rep’s August Osage County in Little Rock, Arkansas. Under the direction of Bob Hupp, Cassandra assayed the pivotal role of Johnna Monevata for over 10,000 people during the run of the show.

Next up is a leading role in Lisa Crapella’s 2016 feature film The Story of Jesus, in which she will play Mary of Bethany. Cassandra is known in the industry as a classically-trained performer who consistently gives criticallypraised performances.

TheRun “For the first time in my brief theater history, though I’ve loved the theater all my life, I can appreciate the hard work and collective effort to do work that is outside the perceived bracket of ‘theater’,” she explains.

Cassandra’s other passion is helping women and children by organizing and chairing events that can make a difference. “I have an extra sensitivity when it comes to children because they’re so vulnerable and are often overlooked,” reveals the caring humanitarian. “That niche needs more attention so I have a more heightened focus on those organizations.”

A graduate of Columbia University, Seidenfeld discovered her passion for the theater while studying, fueled by her love for Shakespeare’s plays. “One of my favorite roles was playing Viola and Cesario in Twelfth Night,” says Cassandra. “I love all his plays and I know them front to back.” Cassandra has also appeared on the CBS television show Person ofTone Interest with Jim Caviezel and Taraji Henson. House

Cassandra is an active philanthropic force for good and was recently nominated to be on the Advisory Board of the Lamont-Doherty Observation Earth Conservatory (LDEO). She is also a Global Advisory Board Member & Global Ambassador of Women4Empowerment, an organization committed to ending violence against women, and Sunshine Family Global, a nonprofit aimed at building a global

sustainable community. “My work has a common thread in helping people and giving back, whether it be through social awareness or helping to build and rebuild infrastructure,” she explains. “Even just smiling at someone is a way of giving back some part of you. I’m blessed that I’m able to do that.” She is also one of the original producers of the First Women’s Fashion & Film Festival in New York City and the Oberon Theater Ensemble. Whether she’s in the spotlight on the stage or screen or behind the scenes helping those in need, Cassandra is a bright star who is destined to burn even brighter. “I want to keep learning, growing and staying open to new possibilities,” she muses. “My goal is to take every opportunity to grow as a person and do whatever I can to give back for as long as I can.”

HER STORY HAMILTON'S Renée Elise Goldsberry IS LIVING

AND MAKING MUSICAL HISTORY

BY PAMELA JACOBS

B

roadway’s Hamilton is like nothing you’ve ever seen—and is everything you’ve ever hoped for, or dreamed of, in theater. Set in the late 1700s, it’s as modern as anything on Broadway ever has been, and is relevant to every person, regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status. At the risk of sounding like I’m gushing—and it’s worth the risk—it is a perfect piece of art.

Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton tells the story of one of the country’s founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton, of whom most Americans know nothing more than that he was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr, and that his face is on the $10 bill. Through rap, hip hop, pop, and traditional theater music, the passion, romance, love, sex, ambition, and heartache of the country’s history-makers is brought brilliantly, astoundingly to life. Personally, I believe Lin-Manuel Miranda is the Shakespeare of our time, a man who is making history, not just writing about it. Of course the most brilliant theatrical storytelling in the world is nothing without an equally brilliant cast. Creating Hamilton required the levels of talent and perfection from its cast that its writer possessed, and the cast certainly delivered. Case in point: Renée Elise Goldsberry. No stranger to acting, singing, and stunning audiences with her beauty and extreme talent, Goldsberry’s performance as Angelica Schuyler, Hamilton’s sister-in-law, is flawless, powerful, evocative, and just plain wonderful. Angelica Schuyler may be the role Goldsberry is getting the most attention for right now—but it’s certainly not her first or only time making theater audiences fall in love with her. She won awards for her performance in Shakespeare in the Park’s Two Gentlemen of Verona; she originated the role of Nettie in The Color Purple on Broadway; she was the last actress to play Mimi Marquez in Broadway’s Rent; and she charmed kids and adults alike as Nala in The Lion King on Broadway. Goldsberry also honed her drama skills on One Life to Live for five years—for which she won several Daytime Emmy’s—and has graced the big and small screen in numerous other roles, including TV’s The Good Wife and The Following.

While this highly impressive, award-winning beauty might be entrenched in one of the biggest roles of her life, it’s certainly not the only important one. Because in addition to performing eight shows per week, recording a soundtrack, and speaking to people like me, Goldsberry is a wife and mother, and it’s clear from the smile on her face when she talks about her husband and two young children, that this is truly the role of her lifetime. Basically, Renée Elise Goldsberry is superwoman—and her humility and generosity of spirit only make you love her more. It’s no wonder this woman is singing about history and creating it. Pamela Jacobs: Hamilton is one of the biggest sensations to hit Broadway in decades. When you first started working on it, did you have any idea that it would be the massive hit it’s become? Renée Elise Goldsberry: When I first heard Lin-Manuel Miranda’s demo of the song I sing in the show, my jaw hit the floor—I thought ‘this is the mother lode.’ People send stuff all the time to prepare or audition for, but this was unlike anything I’d ever heard, and I couldn’t even take it in in a single hearing. I was like ‘wow, this is huge, this is it.’ I hadn’t even planned to participate at that point because I had just brought my daughter home from Africa—our second child is adopted—and I was on a self-imposed maternity leave; but just the way life works out, as soon as you say ‘I’m not leaving the house for two months,’ something comes along that you just can’t say no to. I hadn’t heard any of the other songs yet—and my song is one of 50 amazingly miraculous songs and moments—it only took that one to know that it was going to be a huge hit. If I was in the audience and saw this, my mind would be blown. PJ: Obviously the music is what you first heard, but it’s one of many brilliant aspects of the show. Are there other specifics that you can pinpoint as to why this show is so special and so beloved? REG: It’s impossible to single out anything in the show, because you feel as if you’re cheating on some other aspect that’s just as impactful and emotional. It started with a story about somebody that we don’t know much about, shockingly—Alexander Hamilton—and the way Ron Chernow writes this biography is so much more than just what could be historical dates and facts. It’s about relationships and emotions; there’s a drama involved in this person’s life, and this biographer captured the drama. Lin is also a great storyteller, and he was blown away by the life of a person he thought he knew. To quote him, I think he said, ‘I can’t believe no one’s already written this.’ I think he spent a lot of time trying to figure out where the musical was that was already written about this. He couldn’t believe that he came across this particular story and no one had told it. I think that’s divine, because I don’t know of a better storyteller than Lin-Manuel Miranda; I don’t know of a more unique and important voice—his sensitivity to what’s the most human, what’s the most dramatic, and what’s the most universal in every person’s story. On top of that, it’s really about the influence that comes out of him [Manuel]. He is what we all are—an amalgam of a million different voices and sounds we hear all the time because of the media now. Media now is iPods, iMusic, your playlist. In fact, the show was originally called ‘Hamilton Mixtape,’ which is almost more appropriate; the way you would make a playlist to capture all the particular things you want to convey.

PJ: Your character is an actual, historical character, not just a fictional character, so did you have to do a lot of research into her as a real person? REG: I had the benefit of the work that had already been done in the biography, and some of the most dramatic parts of her life were there and manipulated by Lin. But really when you’re playing a character, it’s more of a soul searching of who you are than who that person is. Really you read about the character and see the decisions they’ve made, but you’re looking within yourself and the world around you to fulfill those moments in the richest way possible. PJ: Is it different when you’re originating a role— you’re the first actor to play Angelica and breathing life into this character? REG: I was the last to play Mimi in Rent, and that show was another important and landscape-changing gift to the world, and it was a great bookend experience for me. That character in many ways was the exact opposite of Angelica, but both extremely strong women who are living powerfully with the burden of their time. So I had the many, many women who played Mimi before me, whose shoulders I stood on, but I’m Renée Goldsberry, not them, and I’m not going to just copy them—although you do have the advantage of seeing things other people do and saying ‘Oh, that’s fabulous,’ but the most you can give any role is whatever is most unique to you. So in that way, there isn’t much of a difference, originating a role or not. I’ll do what I’m going to do whether I’m the first or the hundredth playing the character. PJ: You’ve done big screen, small screen, lots of theater and Broadway—do you have a favorite? Is Broadway the epitome? REG: Theater, I’d say, not just Broadway. Broadway is what the world says it is; it’s the profile and the hope that the better a show does somewhere, it will make it to Broadway. A show is a success not because it is on Broadway, but because every high school, every regional theater wants to then do it. That’s the value of Broadway, it’s the force that sends it out into the world so it can be as

far-reaching as possible.

that while performing?

Everything has its pluses and minuses; the minus in theater—and the plus—is that it exists in that moment and then it’s gone. It doesn’t matter how brilliant I was every single night before you come to the show, if it doesn’t work on the night you come, it didn’t matter. So what’s challenging about getting a lot of praise and acclaim [in theater] is you have to live up to that again every night and believe that the gift will come again to make it real in that moment.

REG: I typically don’t want to know that a particular person is there, because I feel, in theory, I’m more free if I’m not wondering what they’re thinking. I want to know at the end, when I’m walking offstage—then I can be like ‘yay,’ or ‘oh well!’ [laughs].

It’s nice in film and television to have an honest, beautiful moment that’s captured and can live forever. When I leave the show [Hamilton], it’s over; I’ll have my stories and memories, but I do love that TV and film keeps giving. But, what’s beautiful and amazing and wonderful about theater is probably it is the most satisfying, in terms of how much of yourself is demanded. The bar is so high, and you can’t compartmentalize what you’re doing, especially in a musical that’s this resonant and deep; there’s no part of who you are that isn’t called for and useful, and that’s very satisfying when you can pull it off. The other thing is the role the audience plays in creating a beautiful moment in theater; that’s at least 40% of what we’re experiencing onstage. PJ: The show is so relevant today, socially, and politically. Are there certain themes that resonate especially with you? REG: There are things that come to mind, politically, but really it’s the universal truths that are relevant now and always, that move me the most. Forgiveness, love, the choices that a woman has to make—these are always relevant and interesting. Whether it’s battling over immigration laws, the lines drawn between personal and political lives, controversies, conflicts—all these things that existed then are relevant and poignant now. PJ: You’ve had quite a few distinguished people in the audience; you performed in front of the Obamas, for instance. Are you thinking about

In this case, of course we had to know he was going to be there because we had to make sure it was safe for him to be there. It had been a dream of mine—the idea of performing for a president, in particular that president. I remember when he first became president and went to see Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, I thought, ‘Oh my God, can you imagine what it’s like to be those actors?’ I thought it was the biggest thing that could happen to any performer doing any show ever, so the fact that it happened to me is an example of what God can do in your life in terms of dreams coming true. As a company we were so excited about telling him this story, that honor and responsibility trumped nerves and anxiety. Everything else was insignificant to showing this particular story to a sitting president—and this sitting president. We had the honor of performing it for Michelle Obama first, which was also a dream come true. She came backstage after and she was as lovely and gracious and beautiful as I hope Angelica Schuyler could be—the perfect example of what this woman I’m playing would aspire to be. We’ve had Joe Biden, Dick Cheney, de Blasio, Bloomberg. Oh, and the Clintons—they were like our first royalty. Chelsea came and then came back a few weeks later with her parents. But whether you’re the leader of the free world or a high school kid from the Bronx, there’s no difference in terms of how important we feel it is to share this story with you. Not only does it need to be told because of the things that Hamilton made that we inherited, the seeds he planted, but also we tell stories because it helps us lead better lives, and we need to hear about what other people suffered and overcame, how they failed, sacrificed, struggled, and won, and

why we have this. We need to hear about how these young people fought for their legacy so we don’t stay complacent. That’s the power of history, which the show s making sexy again. History isn’t boring, it’s a soap opera; there’s nobody’s life that isn’t dramatic, funny, tragic—it’s just how you tell the story.

That was decades ago, and I was recently thinking ‘what if that had been?’ Now, years later, I think he’d say, “Renée, it’s okay if this, now, is your swan song.’ Everything at this point just feels like grace.

PJ: It seems to be working, as every review is overwhelmingly positive, with words like ‘miraculous,’ ‘life-changing,’ and ‘the show of the century.’

REG: It is.

REG: Here’s the thing: I think we tend to do that. Every year there’s a hit movie or show that we do that to—and I try to remind myself of that to stay grounded and focused—but the importance of remembering this happens is it makes the next writer who is behind Lin even more real.

REG: It would not be possible to have this dream-cometrue experience if I didn’t have the most supportive husband in the whole wide world. Years ago, when I was dreaming up this significant other before I’d even met him, I remember thinking I need the kind of man who can deal with the extremes of the life of an actress. Can you deal with me when I don’t have to leave the house because I haven’t had a job in months and have no money? Can you be the one who supports me when I’m totally disillusioned, and can you be Mr. Goldsberry and hold my purse on the side of the red carpet? Can you do those extremes? It’s not easy—the man who can support you totally when you have so little to give is a very unique creature, and by the grace of God, I have the most perfect one in the world.

PJ: Maybe you’re the good luck charm, actually. REG: I’m in a show with a beautiful company of people, the most diverse and fascinating group of souls that I’ve met. So many of them are so young and probably my favorite thing for the rest of my life will be to watch their careers and how they develop and what they’ve learned from this experience. Years and years ago I won the John Lennon songwriting contest; I lived in Los Angeles and it was the first year of this contest, and my partner and I submitted four or five songs, and one of them won Rock Song of the Year. This guy that I used to sing demos for said ‘that’s really awesome, just don’t make it your swan song.’

PJ: I imagine that your family is the most important role for you.

PJ: How do you manage doing eight performances a week and having two young children?

Most importantly, he’s just very happy for me—he loves the show more than I do, if that’s possible. He’d be supportive anyway, even if he didn’t love it, but it’s helpful that when I come home he’s listening to the demos. He just wants me to be happy and I am happy, because he is wonderful. I couldn’t leave if my husband, my son, and my daughter weren’t happy; it wouldn’t be worth it. If it were stealing something they needed I couldn’t do it. If this isn’t happiness, I

don’t know if it exists. PJ: Your son has seen the show a few times— how does it feel performing in front of him, of all people? REG: There are moments during the show that I think a lot about him—so I thought when he was there that I would be a wreck, because I am impacted by family or friends when I know a certain moment will resonate with them personally, but ironically when he was there I was more staid. I feel like my character is stronger and less vulnerable when he’s there, maybe subconsciously, to protect him. The beauty of my character is that she can be all those things.

PJ: And you brought your son to the premier party. REG: The first time I brought him was when it closed at the Public Theater, because that was his sixth birthday and I couldn’t not be with him, and the second time was on opening night. They made a 5:00 show and he didn’t have school, so he stayed for the party, and he was just the life of the party—break dancing in the middle of the dance floor all night long. Part of me had this idea that I wouldn’t bring them around too much, because I didn’t want to influence them too much to be a part of this life; this life, you have to do it if it’s your passion. Never stop yourself if it’s what you really want and need to do, and if anyone tells you not to, they are wrong. I want that for my kids, whether it’s science or visual arts or politics, I want them to follow their passion and their dreams.

he Caribbean is one of the most popular vacation spots in the entire world—and it’s also one of the most unique. While travelers often refer to the entire region as their destination—i.e. “I’m going to the Caribbean for Thanksgiving”—there are actually an astounding 7,000 islands in the area. Under that large umbrella, there are at least 28 island nations. In short, of the entire expanse that is the Caribbean, there are numerous islands that are completely distinct, each offering their own unique cultures, with something for every type of traveler. Some flock to the idyllic, soft-sand shores for relaxation and sun worshipping, while others are seeking history, culture, and adventure. While island options abound, there’s one hotel brand that offers the exact right property for each type of Caribbean pleasure-seeker. Marriott is a travel name synonymous with comfort, customer satisfaction, and loyalty. It also happens to be one that offers surprising levels of luxury and something for everyone. Here’s a look at three Marriott resorts in the Caribbean, each distinct to its locale, and each offering the very best of what the island it calls home is known for.

St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino A

t the risk of sounding repetitive, St. Kitts really is an incredibly unique island. It has somehow managed to remain under the tourist radar—despite its extreme beauty— which means that it’s still quite untouched and authentic. This doesn’t mean you’ll want for anything, but rather that you’ll get a true taste for the lush beauty and lovely culture that is St. Kitts. At times it can seem as if there are more monkeys and palm trees than there are people. With its lush rainforests, warm waters, cool breezes, mountain springs, and lack of street lights, St. Kitts is what the Caribbean was before it was discovered by tourists with selfie sticks. It’s casual yet lively, and colorful in every sense of the word. It’s also one of the friendliest places on Earth; you can’t walk down the street or drive past a group of people without a wave and a hello from a stranger. This small-island authenticity also means that the Marriott is the only major hotel brand on the island, and the absolute best choice for your stay. Its ocean view suites offer breathtaking views of the turquoise waters (with private balconies from which to enjoy those views, of course), large living spaces, and casual comfort. Should you wish for more space for your family, the two-bedroom villa comes complete with a fully-stocked kitchen, three bathrooms, a dining room, numerous amenities, and elegant décor. Outside your hotel room doors and beyond the vast, open-air lobby, you’ll find an onsite

championship golf course, the luxurious, full-service Emerald Mist Spa, a fullyequipped fitness center with free classes daily, and a winding, free-form pool with a lively swim-up bar, beyond which lies the blue water and white sand beach. With ten options for dining and drinking, there’s no shortage of food and beverage, and your perfect day can begin with a large buffet breakfast, followed by lunch at the Golf Clubhouse Grille or poolside at the Bohemia Beach Pool Bar & Grille, a happy hour cocktail in the lobby bar, and fresh, local seafood—paired with panoramic ocean views—at Blu Seafood Restaurant. You can end the night trying your luck at the casino, or simply soaking in the excitement from the casino’s Sky Ultra Lounge. The next day, you can feast on Italian food, steak, or hit the town and mingle with the locals (check out the beloved Shiggidy Shack for stellar sunsets and the literally-hot entertainment—a fire dancer). Ask anyone who’s been to St. Kitts, and they’ll tell you that no visit is complete without a tour with Greg’s Safaris, where you’ll be transported into the rainforest and take in the sights and sounds of an ancient jungle, ascending to over 3,000 feet high while surrounded by old sugar plantations, numerous monkeys, volcanic mountain ranges, tropical birds, towering trees, and nature at its absolute best. You’ll end your tour feeling invigorated and astounded, while tasting fresh fruits and homemade local candies and pastries. On the drive back, you’ll learn about the

fascinating history of St. Kitts (it was the first Eastern Caribbean island settled by Europeans and the sugar from its sugar mills was so valuable, it’s said to have funded the industrial revolution). The history continues (and comes to life) on the St. Kitts Scenic Rail and Sail Tour, as you ride along the St. Kitts Railway (dating back to 1912, built to deliver sugar cane from fields to mills), hugging the coastline while stepping back in time as you take in the magnificent views. You’ll then move from the railway to a catamaran, sailing along western St. Kitts and passing some of the most historic sites in the Western Hemisphere. Be sure to include a visit to Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, an incredibly wellpreserved fortress (and UNESCO World Heritage Site), and spend some time absorbing the history and culture in downtown Basseterre, the island’s capital that happens to be one of the oldest towns in the Caribbean. Despite a tumultuous and often tragic history, Basseterre has persevered and remained largely intact, and serves as a great example of the island as a whole. Not sure how to include all of this in your St. Kitts history-andculture getaway? The tour desk at the Marriott will help you make it all happen seamlessly. The fact is, St. Kitts is a truly special place, and for those looking to learn, explore, and immerse themselves in its wonders—while enjoying a good amount of R&R in paradise— the St. Kitts Marriott Resort is the perfect place to call home.

Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino The motto of Aruba is “One Happy Island,” and it never fails to live up to it. If you’re looking for the quintessential tropical getaway—filled with easy island living and luxuriating in tropical bliss—Aruba will definitely keep you very happy. Here, it’s all about crystal clear waters with gentle waves lapping on soft, white sands, and sipping on tropical frozen drinks while enjoying the company of your dushi (that’s sweetheart in Papiamento, and you’ll hear it plenty on island). This is the island famous for its trademark divi divi tree—a natural compass that always points southwest due to the trade winds—and its postcard-worthy beaches. The Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino embodies the look, feel, and spirit of this blissfully beautiful island. Located on Palm Beach, it’s a luxurious playground that somehow manages to offer something for everyone—couples revel in the romance, solo travelers find peace and serenity, and families return again and again for the funfor-all-ages factor. What they all have in common is they’re looking to relax and be spoiled. The guest rooms here are the largest on the island, and all are contemporary, light-filled,

and amenity-rich, with private balconies that look out onto the tropical surroundings. For the ultimate in exclusivity, stay in the Tradewinds Club, a luxury hotel-within-ahotel that sits on the resort’s top floor and comes with a host of benefits, including complimentary food and cocktails throughout the day, club lounge access, garment pressing, concierge services, and access to a members-only beach area. The Tradewinds Governor Suite is expansive and chic, offering up one-of-a-kind views of this sublime island. With dining options ranging from Ruth’s Chris Steak House and Ketsu Sushi Bar to the much-loved lobster buffet at La Vista and the spectacularly beautiful Simply Fish—where you dine not next to the beach, but on it, surrounded by waves, tiki torches, and the colors of the setting sun—it’s no wonder guests of other resorts flock to the Marriott for their meals. Really, though, it’s all about easy living here. The Balinese-style Mandara Spa provides pampering to the max, while the grounds of the hotel offer up places to relax (with or without a dushi) everywhere you look; turn the corner and there’s another cozy nook, palapa, hammock, or hideaway. And while everyone enjoys the large main outdoor pool, it’s the H2Oasis adult-only pool that really

ups the ante and puts the “away” in getaway. With a bit of Hollywood-esque glamour, a lot of tropical charm, and a bar that keeps the Aruba Ariba cocktails flowing, you can spend every waking moment here and not want for anything. You might never want to leave the resort (specifically H2Oasis), but the island itself is certainly worth exploring. From a visit to the volcanic stone circles that create the island’s natural pool, considered a hidden gem, to the almost-desolate, untouched northern shores, the beach-goers paradise continues. If you’re looking for something a bit different, there’s even a donkey sanctuary (a personal favorite of mine). Considering Aruba is the happy island— therefore naturally a great choice for a celebration—the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino is offering a Celebrecation Package, which includes Ocean Front Junior Suite accommodations, a private photo shoot, sparkling wine upon arrival, a private cooking lesson for two with the Executive Chef, and a customized picture frame. And really, you can’t choose a better place to celebrate anything (a birthday, an anniversary, a Tuesday).

Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort So where do you go if you’re a New Yorker looking to feel right at home, but in the tropics as opposed to the concrete jungle? Where you’ll find food as good as you’re accustomed to, and an environment that’s casual yet elegant. The logical choice is the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort. Fresh off an extensive $15 million renovation—revamping the design inside and out, and the entire food and beverage program—this high-end resort along Seven Mile Beach is a traveling-foodie favorite for good reason. They feature a highly-curated farm-to-table culinary program that includes both locally-produced and globally-inspired elements. How about an apothecary happy hour, a boulangerie brunch, a pop-up poolside mojito bar (yes, please!), and fourcourse lobster nights? The newest additions extend beyond the exciting food and drinks and past the contemporary décor to the ultimate in easy island living: The Beach House Experience. This brand-within-a-brand, home-away-from-

home welcomes guests to be a true part of the island, inviting them to live the culture and feel as if the resort is their vacation home. Here, the theme is “endless summer”— that carefree feeling of slowed-down time and infinite enjoyment. Beach & Pool Ambassadors cater to your every waterside wish, personalized picnic baskets and vintage-style bikes await, and sublime days end with a sunset ritual, complete with beach bonfires, cotton candy, and S’mores.

Cayman is a favorite among world travelers, with its calm, crystal clear waters and laidback, life-is-good vibe. You can’t leave without a visit to Stingray City, and more opportunities for wildlife encounters include horseback riding along the beach and the always-popular turtle farm. Back at the resort, you’ll sip on cocktails made with homemade sodas and fresh-pressed juices, receive poolside pampering, and live in the lap of tropical luxury—wondering how you went this long without a Grand Cayman Beach House.

For the ultimate accommodations to match the perfection of your Beach House Experience, the 1,778-square-foot oceanfront Presidential Suite should do the trick. And like the other two resorts, options for pleasure in all its form abound; the La Mer Spa soothes, the Caribbean sea refreshes, and the entire atmosphere breeds tranquility. thiopian-born Chef Marcus Samuelsson was one year old when tuberculosis took away his mother. He and his sister, once recovered from the disease, fled to adoptive parents in Sweden. Marcus tasted blueberries for the first time. He bought his first Bob Marley album. He began his studies at the Culinary Institute in Gothenburg. Fast forward to 2010 and Chef Marcus was in New York opening Red Rooster Harlem—a local hot spot where Ethiopian spices come together with Swedish influences for a fresh yet familiar take on fried chicken, barbeque pork, macaroni and cheese—“a place,” he states on his website, “where people from all walks of life break bread together.” Other restaurants soon followed in Swedish locations: Gothenburg, Stockholm, and Uppsala. But it’s not until 2015 that the chef

left both continents for the exotic island of Bermuda. In May, Marcus’ unbolted its doors to the guests of the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club. And even here, amid tropical paradise, his comfort food continues to bring New Yorkers a bite of home. challenge thrill-seekers. For the boaters in the crowd, the Princess Marina—Bermuda’s only full-service marina—can accommodate any vessel up to a super yacht; plus, its oncall catering services mean it’s never too late to arrange that last-minute corporate event or romantic dinner. Even once you’ve exhausted these possibilities, there is still the chance to depart for an organized, all-day excursion to a neighboring island, or a daydream. But don’t hover for too long. After sunset the Marina becomes a weekly outdoor salon where champagnes and single malts are tossed around in flutes and rocks glasses, where cigars become salty in ocean wind. And make sure to attend “Marina Night”—a happy hour where the entire harbor area becomes one open bar. Then again, if you’re in a New York state of mind, Marcus’ is open nightly with its selection of land and sea—as if Red Rooster flew away to Bermuda and fell in love. The exclusive menu offers everything from Whole Fried Chicken for Two—complete with grits, collard greens, hot sauce, chicken liver

butter, and potato—to Jamerican Veal Porterhouse—collard greens, carrot puree, and coconut for the touch of exotica—to Catch of the Day—seasonal and fresh, complemented by Wadson’s Farm ratatouille and grilled lime. In Chef Marcus’ world, Summer Caesar Salad lives on the same page as Coco Ceviche, and a Roasted Banana Donut is as sophisticated as the Chef’s Cheese Plate. In other words, even the ingredients “break bread together,” even on the Sunday à la carte menu. While you try to wrap your head around this beautiful contradiction, take a look at the modern art now lining the walls of the restaurant—originals by Andy Warhol, Liu Ye, and Nelson Mandela—all part of the resort’s recent $90 million renovation. Maybe you’ll be inspired to make a trip to the Bermuda National Gallery located in Hamilton, just minutes away. Maybe you’ll even return to the resort for an Artful Weekend—a unique package for connoisseurs that includes the finest in lodging, daily breakfast for two, plus two tickets to the Bermuda National Gallery and the Hamilton Princess Art Walk. On Thursday nights, allow acoustic Reggae

performed by the Kings to supply the aesthetic. All of a sudden, Chef Marcus’ first Bob Marley record will enter the spotlight, lingonberries lurking curtain-side, and you’ll be standing in his childhood kitchen—rolling meatballs with grandmother Helga, pickling vegetables, boiling apple jam, and baking ginger snaps. “Helga is the first to teach me how to cook,” Chef Marcus writes, “I owe her my inspiration and dedicate my passion to her.” And we thank Helga, too, for sparking this passion now thriving at the Hamilton Princess.

Sint Maarten Sonesta Ocean Point Resort: Where the People Are As Warm As the Sand By Olia Golovkina

A

four-hour flight from Manhattan can be the difference between office and beach, suit and bikini, paperwork and Piña Colada. It can also mean a getaway to any one of several Caribbean destinations, each with its own variety of hotels, restaurants, and services. But when it comes to selecting a retreat staffed by people who pay attention to the little things, Sint Maarten’s Sonesta Ocean Point Resort stands out above the rest. Upon arrival at its main lobby, you’ll immediately feel taken care of as an attendant escorts you in a golf cart to Ocean Point and Martin’s Bar, past green gardens and calm lily ponds. Through a porte-cochère, you’ll enter into the lobby-café-bar, where you can quickly check into your reserved suite. Ocean View offers 129 rooms and suites, with options that range from the Junior Suite

King to the Luxury Butler Penthouse. All rooms bring elegant beds into an environment of certified plantation-farmed wood and contemporary sleek forms. Some feature an adjacent sofa; others, an oversized swivel chair. But both beckon to lounge, to pause, to savor. Rooms with balconies lead the eyes beyond the interior to a round dining table and two chairs almost floating in the azure expanse beyond. From here, select additional room features: the Swim Out Suite, where the guest can walk out directly into an open-air pool and recline in a chaise lounge that sits in the water; the Rooftop Suite with views to the east and south; the Sunset Suite with 180-degree views of the Caribbean Sea and unparalleled Sint Maarten sunset; and two Penthouse options for the ultimate luxury experience. Furthermore, the Butler Service can take care of all logistics—

Marc Innocenti serves a full à la carte menu of authentic Greek, Spanish, North African, French, and Italian specialties prepared with a modern flair. His cuisine unifies seasonal produce and grilled treats on the plate, while Mediterranean and New World wines complement these savory tastes with zesty tannins. When your party is ready, head over to Cheri Café for the live evening show. Sit by the bar, where your favorite cocktail is prepared by a skilled mixologist, and glide off into the night’s entertainment. book appointments, finalize transportation, and arrange the perfect romantic meal—while you spend valuable time with your loved ones. Step inside your personalized suite, and you’ll feel a wave of serenity from a décor of sandyellows and sea-blues that echoes Caribbean ease. Next, you’ll probably notice the comforts of custom-designed furnishings—the work of international architects, designers, and stylists done specifically for Ocean Point—not to mention Modena Italy’s porcelain floor and Greek marble bathroom that create an ambiance of air, light, and open space. And for the final welcome to paradise, you’ll find a complimentary bottle of Champagne on ice and a selection of petits désserts laid out for your enjoyment. You’ll find that all rooms offer luxury 400-thread count cotton bedding with ultra-comfortable mattresses and a variety of plush pillows. Every room also holds a flat-screen TV, free wireless and wired internet, a USB charging station for mobile devices, and a wireless music player. You’ll see that the personal approach at

Ocean Point, however, goes beyond the necessities. In addition to the usual water, soft drinks, and beer offered in the mini-refrigerator, you’ll receive full bottles of premier spirits to be replaced as needed—Meyer’s Rum, Beefeater’s Gin, Stolichnaya Vodka, and Ballantine Whiskey. Plus, enjoy a caffeinated drink any time of day from the in-suite Lavazza espresso and hot beverage machine, perhaps while lounging in a downy bathrobe and slippers that are checked by housekeeping twice a day—just another way that the Sonesta team thinks of your every wish. If you feel like going out for a bite, try one of the two restaurants and two bars located at Ocean Point, all-inclusive with your stay. Neighboring Sonesta Maho Beach Resort and Casino, however, has its own gourmet alternatives—from four-course menus to handcrafted pizzas to café refreshments–and you have unlimited access. We recommend a dinner at Azul Restaurant, where breathtaking ocean views blend with a mélange of Mediterranean flavors that further transport the imagination. Here, Chef

The following day, perhaps after a buffet breakfast at the Ocean Terrace Restaurant, make time for some lounging in the sun. The resort’s three swimming pools with private gazebos and cabanas, private man-made beach, and Maho Bay Beach give ample opportunity for getting in that gorgeous tan. You may also use your guest day pass to the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort, Casino and Spa for complimentary use of all facilities. That means access to services like hot stone massage, couple’s massage, and detoxifying destressing treatments, just to name a few; and for the active travelers, the pass opens the door to a state-of-the-art fitness center and various daytime activities from bingo to aqua aerobics and volleyball. The shoppers in your party will love the bustling boutiques of Maho Village, a good alternative to Philipsburg—capital of Dutch Sint Maarten— with their plethora of duty-free jewelry, linens, perfume, and more. But if you do decide to make a day trip out of Maho Bay, a stop at the tours-and-excursions desk is all it takes to snorkel in Anguilla or cover St. Barth in a Mini Cooper. At the end of the day, Sonesta Ocean Point Resort is the ideal adults-only five-star oasis where the old and new come together to offer something for every taste. But more charming than any outing or exotic mixed drink is the feeling of being appreciated—coming back through the suite door to find clothes folded, covers turned back, and tiny chocolates laid out neatly on your pillow. Then drifting off to sleep, where sunlight dances in aquamarine ripples.

NIZUC Resort & Spa The Modern Mayan Spirit By Claire Gilbertsen

I

t’s hard to believe that only fifteen minutes away from the chaos of Cancun is an otherworldly resort experience. Part of the initial appeal of NIZUC Resort and Spa is that it’s an effortless-yet-extravagant vacation destination with an incredible variety of amenities available—from truly mindblowing spa treatments to a diverse and excellent restaurant selection. NIZUC Resort, on 29 idyllic private acres, has exclusive access to two gorgeous white sand beaches on the Yucatán Peninsula. Guests can enjoy the privacy provided by roped-off areas at each beach, while also being served beverages by the extremely courteous staff for a personalized, pampered Caribbean experience. Relaxing in one of the five heavenly infinity pools on the property, it’s easy to let all cares drift away. The zen-like décor allows the splendor of the natural surroundings to shine through. The serene reception area opens into a stunning oceanview vista. And while the resort has

over 250 suites and villas, the impeccably maintained grounds remain peaceful and pristine, and the experience is individualized to each and every guest. The design of the rooms seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor space so that guests can enjoy the incredible natural settings around them. Most of the rooms include private plunge pools and balconies, and every bathroom is spacious, with the feel of a personal mini spa. The turn-down service provides different delectable chocolates every evening—the perfect way to end a blissful, beach-filled day. It would be difficult to tire of the restaurants at NIZUC, since their six world-class restaurants were spearheaded and developed by a team of international culinary stars. Ni offers Peruvian cuisine, La Punta specializes in seafood, and Asian fusion can be found at Indochine. For an authentic experience in both traditional and contemporary Mexican cuisine, Ramona uses all local ingredients, recipes, and produce. Finally, Terra Nostra

is a cozy restaurant serving delectable Mediterranean fare, homemade pasta, and real wood-oven pizza. For the true foodie, NIZUC offers the Chef’s Table experience, which starts with a tour of the kitchens followed by a multi-course tasting menu unlike anything else. The gorgeous spa—30,000 square-feet of pure relaxation—is upscale and maintains a distinctly cultural look; from the subtle, Mexican-inspired décor in the massage rooms to treatments that are influenced by Mayan culture, it embodies the essence of the region. The cacao massage is the ultimate in bliss, ending with an oil drip on one’s forehead to complete the feeling of total immersion in a vat of smooth chocolate. The spa also houses an aromatic steam room, a solarium, thermal loungers, and a refreshing ice fountain with a cool mist shower, in addition to fresh fruit and tea. The other healing treatments available feature all ESPA products, a natural luxury skin care line from the United Kingdom. Pampering is their specialty.

NIZUC has nearly every activity imaginable— but don’t miss snorkeling in these serene, turquoise waters. It’s easy and fun—they provide the snorkels and fins—and snorkelers get to see the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world. To explore underwater while staying dry, guests can easily also go to the world’s first Underwater Art Museum, which is not far from the resort. With the calm energy, bespoke beach experiences, and beautifully attentive staff, it’s impossible not to immediately feel relaxed and peaceful at NIZUC. Expect to be treated like royalty at this sublime resort and spa, and expect to already be planning your return upon your departure. When a gem like NIZUC is discovered, you won’t even think of staying anywhere else.

“Masterful, Memorable” and More: Marriott Stanton Miami Beach By Olia Golovkina

I

n last month’s issue, we covered “Miami’s Masterful, Memorable RED, the Steakhouse”— one of the country’s top ten steakhouses according to Esquire, Playboy, and Food & Wine Magazine. We discussed RED’s Executive Chef Peter Vauthy. We discussed its location in the “iconic ‘South of Fifth’ neighborhood just a few blocks from the beach.” This month, we pick up where we left off, leading you to your night’s accommodations—just three blocks seaward—to the Marriott Stanton Miami Beach. On first glance, the hotel may seem a rem-

nant of long-ago art-deco architecture—symmetrical, geometric, vertical, the Miami Beach of the early 20th century—but don’t let the façade fool you. A peek inside will reveal a chic, modern lobby worthy of the $20 million renovation currently under way inside its halls. Think “beach meets a surfer shack.” To check in, don’t look for a formal front desk, as it has been replaced with interactive pods that will ease you into your reserved room. No ceremony necessary. Mismatched knick-knacks and photos hanging on the timber plank-paneled walls will likewise remind you that New York is far behind, that your

vacation has officially begun. Your guest room will be a combination of clean-cut design and exotic finesse. Palettes of fresh whites and neutral grays with accents of oranges and browns will make for elegant but livable quarters. A retro-vibe will reaffirm itself in the color-processed surf and fiftiesstyle photographs sprinkled throughout the space, just as custom television built-ins— rendered in whitewashed oak and white lacquer—echo surfboards. Out on the balcony, you’ll find a vast view of open ocean or a postcard shot of the downtown skyline—a reminder of the natural and urban jungles beyond. And in the bathroom, a cut-out feature in the shower door will allow you to start the water from a rainforest showerhead without ever stepping inside. This is not your average Marriott. To witness the pinnacle of Phase One of the transformation project, climb to floor 11 where the Concierge Lounge offers an openair walk-out to the lights of South Beach and the wind of the Atlantic. Enjoy a continental breakfast here in the morning or, at night, a

tropics-inspired cocktail. Phase Two, which is scheduled to finish by summer 2016, focuses on the public areas of the hotel: Its two lobbies, pools, outdoor terrace, spa, fitness center, and driveway. The reinvented Stanton will also feature three new food and beverage outlets as well as two new bars operated by Japanese vendor Plan Do See, not to mention a Mexican restaurant, a secret sushi restaurant with its own exclusive entrance, and much more. We don’t want to spoil the surprise, but one thing is certain: Phase Two will bring this cuisine collection into a new age. Even now, creativity is becoming a force of its own at 161 Ocean Drive. When Phase Two began at the beginning of this year, and large plywood walls concealed construction, the hotel team decided to spruce up the place in the style of nearby Wynwood— the art district located just across the bay where block-long graffiti masterpieces line the streets. The team called in local graffiti artists to participate in the rejuvenation process, and soon every bare spot was covered in

color. By the time construction moved onto the outdoor terrace, several artists joined together to orchestrate an entire outdoor mural exhibit, followed by a live show. Guests loved the murals so much that they asked for painting lessons. One graffiti artist, Atomik, stepped forward, and, just like that, Marriott visitors became his students. Guests still have the rare opportunity to (legally) vandalize public space, to leave their marks amid Miami’s chorus of voices. It goes without saying that the Stanton is replete with getaway essentials like spa services—everything from Swedish Massage to the Massage Meltdown to Romantic Couple’s Massage, the Water Lily Radiance Facial, and Nature’s Detox Wrap—and fitness equipment. But guests can also surf in the outdoor whirlpool, swim in either (or both) of two beach-view infinity pools, or head down to the shoreline for paddleboarding and jet skiing. Then again, an ice-cold Mojito is available upon request, and it’s made with local Miami Club Rum, the city’s only rum distillery.

Lastly, if the full luxury experience is what you’re after, try the Stanton’s Millionaire’s Miami package. It includes a private seaplane rental for lunch at the Florida Keys, one bottle of Veuve Clicquot, jet ski rentals, a Lamborghini or Ferrari rental for one day, plus one five-course Millionaire’s Dinner with wine pairings at RED, The Steakhouse. Whether it’s slicing through a tender cut of 22-ounce Ribeye, spraypainting your signature onto a mural, diving for seashells in the ocean, speeding through the high-energy Miami streets, or heading out for the night—the whole night— into the city’s electric air, the Stanton has you covered.

Manhattan Moonshine Brings Un-Aged Whiskey Back to Prohibition-Era Roots By Ann Grenier

M

anhattan Moonshine, a revolutionary new premium un-aged whiskey, is making a splash in cocktail bars across New York City. Founded just nine months ago by William Kehler, Manhattan Moonshine aims to revive the quality and grandeur of Prohibition Era un-aged whiskey and bring it to modern Manhattan drinkers. A popular misconception is that moonshine is—and has always been—harsh tasting, low quality, and made in backwoods or bathtubs. In truth, during Prohibition, plenty of moonshine was actually produced in sophisticated distilleries that operated in secret, then distributed to upscale speakeasies across the country. Because consumers accepted the misperception, most modern day “moonshines” are packaged in mason jars or faux jug-style containers, embodying un-aged whiskey’s supposed backwoods origins. With Manhattan Moonshine, Kehler wants to show the world the other side of moonshine: An approachable, high quality, un-aged whiskey, born during the cocktail renaissance that was American Prohibition. Typically, moonshines are made following the steps of traditional barrel-aged whiskey recipes, but skip the final step of putting the whiskey into barrels. Manhattan Moonshine, on the other hand, is created from the outset to be an un-aged whiskey, meaning that its recipe and production process are specifically tailored to create a product that is complex, devoid of any of the harshness or grassy flavor that is typical of un-aged Whiskeys. To do this, William Kehler partnered with master distiller and author, Ian Smiley, considered to one of the foremost experts on moonshine. After a year of experimenting with recipes and production processes, Kehler and Smiley developed a unique grain bill featuring a combination of oats, rye, and spelt (an ancestral form of wheat) to create an un-aged whiskey that is smooth, and approachable, without the heavy barrel flavors that make aged whiskeys harder to mix. Because it has a smoothness reminiscent of an aged whiskey, but lacks aged whiskey’s

88 • Resident September 2015

heavier barrel flavors, Manhattan Moonshine is a highly versatile spirit that can be used in an almost infinite variety of drinks, using flavors and ingredients that no aged whiskey can mix with. These range from traditional ingredients, such as grapefruit juice or tonic water, to more exotic ingredients like lavender, black walnut peel, or saffron. This versatility, similar to that of silver or white rum and blanco or silver tequila, allows Manhattan Moonshine to be the go-to whiskey for mixology.

Ultimately, Kehler hopes that Manhattan Moonshine’s versatility as a base for cocktails— and the glamorous yet subversive nightlife of the Prohibition Era that it embodies—will continue to inspire mixologists’ creativity and delight discerning drinkers.

Alice’s Arbor: Brooklyn’s Farm-To-Table Gem By Harry Liddle and Olia Golovkina

A

rustic spot for seasonal American dining in the up-and-coming Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn, Alice’s Arbor stands apart from the typical dives in the area. And there are several reasons why. For one, it’s located just a one-minute walk away from the Franklin Avenue stop on the C train, but provides a comfortable, laid-back retreat from Manhattan’s manic pace the moment you walk in. The menu is just as inviting with its selection of great morning pastries and omelettes, lunch sandwiches, and romantic dinner dishes. Alice’s Arbor also offers local wines, whiskey, and organic groceries. Owner Dimitri Vlahakis (Motorino and La Gamelle), Head Chef Mike Franzetti (Palladin, Lupa, and Chestnut), and General Manager Eric Goulange are dedicated to cultivating

a sincere farm-to-table experience by sourcing ingredients from the finest local growers and distributors: Oysters from New York’s Fischer Island, chicken from Sullivan County, maple syrup from Grahamsville, and produce from New Jersey’s West Milford, among others. The cuisine features Chef Franzetti’s authentic European-influenced American cooking that honors his Brooklyn roots as well as his vast experience working with some of New York City’s best chefs, including Mark Ladner, Jonathan Waxman, Jean-Louis Palladin, and Paul DiBari. For breakfast grab an Egg Sandwich (bacon or ham, cheese) on flauta, a Bahn Mi Croissant (choice of chicken or pork, carrots, daikon, cucumber, jalapeño, cilantro, sriracha), or try the French Toast Cubano (roasted pulled pork, ham, gruyère cheese, pickles served on French Toast), a favorite of the weekend brunch

crowd. For dinner, we loved the perfectly-cooked Seared Scallops served on top of oyster mushrooms and white beans, and the Sullivan County Farm Trout with roasted potatoes, green beans, brown butter, almonds, lemon, and capers. The All-Natural Burger was also exceptional, as were the sides of lemony grilled cauliflower. The delicious farm-to-table meal choices, coupled with a truly warm atmosphere and more-than-fair pricing make Alice’s Arbor an irresistible choice for any meal, any day.

emember when they said red meat was a no-no for losing weight? Then they said eat bacon, but no bread. There’s a new fad every day, and a new weight loss guru telling you what you can and can’t enjoy, and the ways in which you should deprive yourself.

One large glass of water with lemon immediately upon waking up in the morning

After 30 minutes: two apples or two oranges

Turns out, it’s not that complicated—and deprivation is not necessary. Instead, be smart. That’s what Eddie Avdyli, the chef of Angus Club Steakhouse, learned. He knew he needed to (and wanted to) lose weight. He also knew he was surrounded by meat, all day, every day. So instead of eliminating steak from his diet, he got smart about it. In the end, Chef Eddie lost 40 pounds eating the same juicy, delicious steak he prepares

After 6pm: Large salad, and two eggs if still hungry (no salt)

Amanda Russell Fit, Strong, Sexy – And Unstoppable By Pamela Jacobs

ubbed “the Carrie Bradshaw of fitness”— turning exercise into a lifestyle and bridging the gap between fitness, entertainment, and personal empowerment— Amanda Russell has more strength in one well-toned arm than most people have from head-to-toe. And it’s not just the kind of strength that comes from a good workout; it’s also what comes from a life of persevering, powering through, and passionately going after what you want.

where she is today. Instead, she is the epitome of a woman warrior; she is a go-getter who proves that in order to get what you want out of life—whether in health, in love, or in career—you have to go after it with gusto, and never take “no” for an answer.

doors. I’m like, exactly the personification of what Girls on the Run is trying to achieve. I was from this small town [in Canada]. I got into running because there were no organized sports. Dance and swimming cost money. Running was free, so I ran.

Sitting poolside in East Hampton, the sweet, sassy young woman filled me in on her dramatic personal journey, and demonstrated what it is to be a girl on fire.

An Olympian-in-training turned TV personality (founder of Amanda Russell.TV and a YouTube partner), writer (with multiple national columns), spokeswoman, keynote speaker, and consultant, and the founder of fitstrongandsexy.com, it’s easy to imagine that she’s been blessed since birth. After all, she’s a role model and a brand, and was named one of Google’s “Next Top Fitness Trainers.” But it was neither luck nor an accident that brought Russell to

Pamela Jacobs:

I had the most amazing phys-ed teacher, and in 9th grade she said to me, ‘You know that in the U.S., there’s these things called scholarships, and if you work really hard and you keep your grades up and you run fast, you could get a full scholarship. They will pay you to go there and run USA track and field.’

I know that you were a serious runner, training for the Olympics, and basically the worst happened. How did your journey as an athlete begin? So there’s a charity that I love, it’s called Girls on the Run, and the whole premise is how giving girls the training to be able to run a race teaches you so much about life and how it can open up

Amanda Russell:

I would run in the snow, on my lunch hours, before school, after school. I was known as the crazy girl who was always running. But I wanted out of there so badly, and I felt like that was my ticket. I have the most amazing family and it’s a great hometown, but I knew there was something bigger out there. My

parents were saying, ‘Amanda, that’s great that want to go to University in the U.S., but we can’t help you. We can’t pay even if you have a 90% scholarship. It’s gotta be 100%,’ so I was only looking at full rides.

I will go there.’ I devised a plan to be able to do that. I didn’t have credit history so I couldn’t even get a cell phone or an apartment, so I was literally like alone in the world. There were some scary times.

PJ: So it was as much about getting away

PJ: It’s very brave.

as it was about the actual running?

AR: Yes, and by my senior year I was running times that were among some of the fastest in the U.S. for girls my age, and I became one of the top recruits. I took a scholarship and that was what changed everything. In the U.S., training is very different [from Canada]. Every coach has a different training philosophy— my coaches were known as kind of hammers, like, ‘train more, train more, run more.’ On my body type that didn’t really work well; it just kept breaking down. And they didn’t care about me qualifying and going to the Olympics; they cared about me performing for that team and making money. Before Olympic trials I had a team-sponsored race, and I was in so much pain. I couldn’t train, I was on so many painkillers and I was on crutches, and they basically played on all my weaknesses. At the end of the day it was like, ‘you’re afraid of failure, if you don’t do this you’re going to get dropped.’

PJ: So you kept going. And what happened to your body?

AR: I didn’t realize I had a stress fracture in my femur, which is almost unheard of. And it ended up cracking on that last race, when I decided to just go through with it. The surgeon that I saw was like, ‘I’ve seen tens of thousands of fractures and I’ve never seen one like this before.’ And so then that was like the end. PJ: You must have been devastated. AR: You go through an identity crisis. Because my whole life, I was running. That was everything—it was my ticket. And when it stopped, your sponsors drop you, my visa would expire—I couldn’t stay in the country. I had no family here. All I could think about was, ‘The worst has happened and now I’m going to have to go back to my hometown with my tail between my legs.’ And I thought, ‘Well, if I can’t go to the pinnacle of the athletic world, my other dream would be to go to the pinnacle of the corporate world, which is New York City.’ I had seen New York City in movies, and I was like ‘I don’t even care if I am homeless,

96 • Resident September 2015

AR: Oh, it’s stupid. Brave/stupid [laughs]. Sometimes they go together.

PJ:

AR: So I moved to New York, found a few consulting firms, got all these rounds of interviews at one, and they hired me on the spot. Meanwhile, I had lost everything, body wise. I had to learn to walk again in the water. I got into non-impact stuff. It started with the pool, and then biking, and I joined a men’s bike racing team in Central Park, and it was amazing. These guys took me under their wing because I was the only girl who was there at 5:00 in the morning, rain or shine, and would bike 30 miles before 7 a.m. It turns out a lot of these guys are big wigs, like one of them is the chairman of JP Morgan and one of them was a big wig at the Met. I knew I wanted to start a business, and one of my new mentors was like, ‘You should do an MBA. It’s never a financially stupid decision, and it will give you a student visa.’ So I did an MBA and I was working in a restaurant, then signed with Wilhelmina and started modeling to pay my way through school. I also started pitching myself to every single editor and person on set, because at the same time I was doing these workout videos. I wanted to start a brand and the best way was through digital media. You can have nothing and start a business on the macro scale yourself. You need an audience, and how do you draw that audience, in today’s world without any capital? And that was YouTube; YouTube is free.

PJ: So you’re in school, modeling, and making workout videos at this point?

AR: Yes, and in my free time I’m also training everybody that I can, because I just love it. And I started hosting these boot camps on the West Side Highway for whoever would come, and they started getting packed. And then the founder of Zico Coconut Water came, and I ended up replacing Molly Sims as a spokesperson for Zico, and that’s when things really started to take off. Zico became

a huge endorser of mine.

you started?

evolution of you and your brand?

I started doing this YouTube stuff on a bigger scale, too; I wanted to use YouTube as a driver to something that’s monetized. I partnered with Trium Entertainment. Mark Koops is behind that—he’s the creator of The Biggest Loser. To this day he’s a really good mentor and friend of mine, and supporter. It was great, but then I just decided to hire my own employees and start doing production on my own. And because I had this niche in producing online content, I started doing a lot of consulting work, building online branding models for other companies and helping them build and grow.

AR: I’ve had a lot of those kinds of moments. There are certain times where I’m like, ‘how did I get here? How did this happen? From this small town that nobody leaves, to sitting at dinner with Donald Trump—how did I get here?’

AR: I think it’s going to continue to expand

PJ: So are there other fitness methods out there that you can describe as similar to yours?

AR: Barry’s Bootcamp—who are actually good friends of mine—is the closest, and we’ve done a lot of collaborations. They’ve done my videos, and I have done pop-up teaching for them. Actually I just did one yesterday at their studio right around the corner [in East Hampton].

PJ: Recently you’ve been shooting videos PJ: Do you have advice for anyone says, ‘I really at the YouTube studios. So they’re having their biggest personalities, the people with the most subscribers, come and shoot there?

AR:There’s a training as a YouTube partner. You go through all the training there, but they’re like like, ‘We work for you. We work for our biggest creators.’ So they make you feel like you’ve got these top production resources, editors, props, and people, everything at your fingertips.

PJ: While you’re there, and you’re a YouTube partner, are you having moments where you’re like ‘I can’t believe I’m here right now and this is happening,’ given where

want to get in shape but I don’t know where to begin’?

AR:Oh yeah. I’m actually doing that right now with 13 editors in New York. Part of what I am doing is training them mentally, and I’m getting e-mails like, ‘Oh my gosh, I ran my first hill,’ or ‘I finished three miles in under 45 minutes.’ But advice wise—everybody’s got that inner fire inside of them. You learn about yourself, about what motivates you personally, and it’s a trial and error. And you have to figure out what it is for you and go with what drives you.

PJ: So where do you see the near future and the

and the online platform is not going to be just fitness. That was my heart, my passion, but what it’s evolved as is more, to build this community and elevate the conversation on women’s lives. Fitness is about more than exercise. It develops a certain confidence and it develops a ticket out. It gives you a work ethic. It gives you discipline. What I’ve done with fitness is try to package typical exercises in a way that draws people in. Once they’re in, it’s going to forever change their lives. They feel a different confidence. They achieve things that they thought they never would have done. It’s amazing to watch the transformation of people, and to give that to other people—I feel like that’s why I was put here and that’s why my Olympic career didn’t work out.

PJ: A lot of people in your position could have just gone and quit everything, and instead you chose to go in the opposite direction.

AR: Right. And that’s what my message is trying to get across. You have to shift your attitude. There’s always a way to create something positive. And even if you can’t see it at the time, you look back and think ‘Wow, thank God that crappy thing happened because it led to all this.’

Sleep Well How a Good Night’s Sleep Matters to Your Health By Dr. Irene Grafman

O

ne of my biggest passions, mainly because it has made such an enormous, positive impact in my life, is helping people get great sleep. Last month, Glen Tobias, RD wrote a great article on the importance of sleep and how it affects your weight. But in addition to negatively affecting your weight, poor sleep can have a detrimental effect on your health. Most of us know by now that we need a minimum of seven to eight hours of sleep, but what most don’t realize is that it’s not just the quantity that’s important. It’s the quality. If you don’t get quality sleep, then you can sleep for 12 hours and still wake up feeling exhausted. Sleep is our body’s way of healing, balancing, and restoring itself. When you don’t get quality sleep, your body can’t function at its optimum. While you’re young, you may not feel it as

98 • Resident September 2015

much, but as you age you may start “not feeling like your old self”. You may not have as much energy as you used to. You may need to exercise to feel good, since without quality sleep that may be the only way your body produces serotonin—the feel good hormone. It starts out with you becoming a little forgetful and scattered, but as the lack of quality sleep takes its toll, it can often turn into anxiety and depression. To try to get back to the real you, you may see every specialist under the sun to get some normalcy back. Every doctor you see will tell you to get more sleep, but no one will actually test you to see that the sleep you are getting is actually helping. The scariest part of undiagnosed apnea is its direct correlation to heart disease and stroke. One of my close friends just had a heart attack, and he was in his mid-forties with no history of any heart problems, high blood pressure, or cholesterol. No one knew exactly

what caused it, as he had no blockages, but the only explanation his doctor gave was increased stress on the heart from sleep apnea. Our bodies are amazing in that we are able to adapt to almost anything. We will live with chronic exhaustion and think it’s the norm because that’s all we know. But once you discover how amazing a good night sleep can feel, you may really change your life. Please call us for a free evaluation and to learn more about how we can help you get a good night’s sleep.

Sophia Ruan Gushée Shares the A to Z of Detoxing By Ann Grenier Sophia Ruan Gushée, a former investment management professional and now a mother of three, spent five years researching her family’s toxic exposures from common household products. It was a quest she undertook after she came across some disturbing information about a hormone disruptor in conventional baby bottles and a carcinogen in baby bottle nipples, while reading a book on healthy parenting for her then three-month-old daughter. This discovery and the ensuing research prompted her to write her new book, A to Z of D-Toxing: The Ultimate Guide to Reducing Our Toxic Exposures, a reference guide for identifying many of the toxic chemicals and carcinogens within our environment. It provides a fact-based overview regarding not only

what these chemicals are, but also their effects on our bodies and the steps we can take to reduce them. Gushée wishes she had received this information long ago, and is determined to pass it along. Gushée’s research began with the toxins we put in to our body, looking in to the GMOs and chemicals in our foods. As she continued, she was shocked to learn about the proliferation of chemicals in the common products we use every day. She found out that since World War II, more than 84,000 chemicals have been introduced into American commerce, yet less than 1% are regulated by the government. This discovery motivated her to spread this knowledge beyond her family, and encourage the public to become conscious consumers as well.

While Gushée collected hundreds of detailed tips throughout her research, ultimately, she developed ten key goals which she feels are the most high-impact ideas to focus on. She refers to these ten goals as her “D-Tox Strategy,” and believes that we should carefully consider our toxic exposures, as much as we think about what we eat and how much we exercise.

A to Z of D-Toxing: The Ultimate Guide to Reducing Our Toxic Exposures will be released on September 29, 2015, and is available now for pre-sale on Amazon.

Facial Rejuvenation For a Holistic Approach, Consider your Dentist First R

ejuvenation is a word heard often when it comes to our overall health and appearance. But how do we look at facial rejuvenation from a holistic standpoint? At our practice, EastSide Dental Medicine, we always take a complete approach to oral and health care. And when doing any restorative or reconstructive work, we approach the patient in a holistic manner as well. We approach both with the end result of making our patients healthy and beautiful while applying cutting-edge solutions. Often when considering facial rejuvenation utilizing BOTOX or fillers, the first thought is to go to a dermatologist, spa, or plastic surgeon’s office. But where does the role of the dentist weigh in? Dentists know facial and head anatomy better than most health professionals. And aesthetic dentistry is, in essence, facial rejuvenation, when one thinks of smile design or a smile makeover as a total package. Facial rejuvenation’s goal is to bring a youthful appearance to the face while reconstructing and enhancing the mouth in a natural and beautiful way. Having facial rejuvenation done in the hands

102 • Resident September 2015

of a qualified dentist has the advantage of being twofold: Addressing anti-aging in the face while creating a more youthful smile. As we know, when we age the teeth can yellow, wear down, and even shift. No anti-aging fillers, topicals, or injections will allow for a truly youthful appearance if the teeth are worn down, chipped, stained or yellowing. Also, dental and facial procedures can often be done combined in one visit, saving the patient time and money. BOTOX is a wonderful solution for softening lines and wrinkles in the face and relaxing the “number 11” furrow in the brow, and dermal fillers add volume back into the face that is naturally lost during the aging process. Working with dentists, some of the areas that can be addressed are jowls, laugh lines (also known as nasolabial fold), loss of lip and cheek volume, and neck wrinkling. These two treatments work beautifully and naturally in a dental setting when performing reconstructive and restorative procedures. Considering a dental practice to perform these procedures while creating a smile makeover is quite natural, as a prosthodontist

knows facial anatomy intrinsically. The facial rejuvenation packages can combine whitening, Invisalign, and veneers, in combination with BOTOX and dermal fillers, for an exceptional and true enhancement of the facial appearance. So why not explore the advantages of combining a beautiful smile with the latest in facial anti-aging treatments? Contact our practice for more information on how facial rejuvenation—combining the best in aesthetic dentistry—would be a wonderful post-summer lift.

“In faith there is no wrong, in faith everything is right.“ – Gurudev

The Divine Guru Sri Gurudev By Joe Alexander

The Swami Comes to America “Service to Humanity is the best work of life,” says Brahmrishi Sri Guruvanandji Swamy, lovingly known as Sri Gurudev. This swami is the Far East’s foremost Spiritual Master. He has millions of supporters from over 170 nationalities who follow his spiritual powers and life-transforming messages of family, faith, and compassion. Gurudev will be making two appearances in the tri-state area: On September 13th at Global Dharma Conference (registration and small fee required) and October 4th, providing teachings on living life at the Colden Center at Queens College, for which there is no charge.

The Wisdom of Baba Born in 1941 in Delhi, India into lifethreatening circumstances due to near fatal kidney failure, Gurudev was taken in by a renowned Indian saint, Yogiraj Devraha Baba, who took him to his Ashram to cure his ailment and save his life. The yogi accurately predicted that Gurudev would one day achieve the pinnacle of spirituality and that Gurudev

104 • Resident September 2015

would use his energy to heal and serve humanity. From that time on, Gurudev was bestowed with wisdom by Baba. In addition to his spiritual prowess, Gurudev holds several degrees including M. Tech. from IIT, Kharagpur (which is the equivalent to MIT and Harvard in the United States), a PhD in Astrology, and a Masters in Sanskrit, Vedas, and Literature. He was also an Honorary Principal and Professor at Banaras Hindu University.

Divine Consciousness After 45 years of preaching love and compassion, combined with his meditation and self-discipline, many of Gurudev’s followers believe he has acquired the divine powers of the ancient sages. This position is attained by very few today and many disciples thought that the time of the sages had disappeared entirely from the modern world. Gurudev now helps hundreds of thousands of people who are in distress. He says, “A little faith will lead you to heaven. Full faith will bring heaven to you.” Gurudev has devoted his entire life to helping guide the suffering masses to raise their human consciousness to Divine

Consciousness. He has the innate ability to express the teachings of the grand Masters and correlate them with the contemporary lives of his followers. “Be a reason for someone’s happiness, not just a part of it,” he says. “Be a part of someone’s sadness, never a reason for it.”

Eternal Truth Gurudev wholeheartedly believes that the teachings from the great Masters of the past contain eternal truth and are still relevant for all ages, people, and places to this day. Gurudev has received many honors and awards, including the “Personality of Knowledge,” which was awarded by the All World Religion Conference, and the “Jyotish Murmagya,” awarded by the German Astrological Society.

Harboring Hearts Heartfelt, Hope-Filled Support By Skylar Lewis

M

ichelle Javian beat the odds and turned an emotional point in her life into something wonderful and compassionate. In 2008, Michelle lost her father after a heart transplant during his long battle with heart disease. In return, Michelle wanted to help families like her own.

with having a family member undergoing a lifesaving heart procedure.

In April of 2009, NYC resident Michelle Javian founded her organization Harboring Hearts with co-founder, Yuki Kotani. Michelle and Yuki met through mutual friends, but had something in common far past their similar interests. Both Kotani and Javian’s fathers were experiencing heart troubles and would be receiving heart transplants around the same time in the same hospital. Fortunately, Kotani’s father survived a heart attack, and is now an LVAD and heart transplant recipient. As for Michelle, the loss of her father led her down an inspiring road. She and Yuki started an organization that provides support to families with loved ones who have heart diseases. Harboring Hearts offers three main types of support:

3. Community Support, which provides programs that offer emotional sustenance by connecting patients, their families, and their caregivers with others who have gone through similar experiences.

1. Emergency Support, which alleviates the unanticipated financial burdens associated

106 • Resident September 2015

2. Housing Support, which provides the families, especially those who are out-ofstate, with housing that is paid for on behalf of Harboring Hearts.

Fall Benefit Since their start in 2009, Harboring Hearts has helped more than 3,000 individuals. This year, they tripled the number of grants in their emergency program. Michelle says they want to expand nationwide and eventually worldwide. Most recently, they expanded their organization to California. On September 29th, Harboring Hearts will host their annual fall benefit. This year’s honorees are Constance Milstein, principal and co-founder of Ogden CAP Properties, and Hiroo Takayama, MD, PhD, assistant professor of surgery, cardiac surgery,

surgical director, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.

Honorees “It’s been exciting to watch an organization grow from the real experiences of two patients’ families into a thriving organization,” said Dr. Hiroo Takayama. Michelle thinks just as highly of Dr. Takayma, stating, “He is a rockstar.” Constance Milstein says, “Working with Harboring Hearts has been such a rewarding experience. Cardiac care has always been an important issue for me and my family, and Harboring Hearts has been an incredible ally in our fight to improve treatment and provide the best care possible.” “Constance is a strong leader and woman, because of Ogden Cap Properties, my father was able to get great care,” said Michelle. This year’s benefit chairs include Abigail Albuam, Celeste Guth, Austin Hoffman, Joanna Milstein, Allan Schwartz, MD and Craig Smith, MD.

Do I Carry My Birkin?? Do’s and Don’ts for the Private School Admissions Tour By Jennifer Brozost and Vimmi Shroff

N

ow that summer is sadly coming to a close, it’s time to jumpstart your NYC private schools application process. Whether your child is starting school for the first time, or applying to a different school, here are some tips to make sure the process goes smoothly. These tours give parents the opportunity to see many schools, with many different approaches to learning. You’ll be able to rule out certain schools, while falling in love with others. There is no better way to get a feel for a school than to actually be inside of it, seeing its teachers and students in action. We like to tell our clients, “If it feels right and you can envision your child there, it is a good option.”

day, or your child isn’t being cooperative, or you’re fighting with your spouse, when you walk into that school, take a deep breath and put a smile on your face. Remember to be polite and be genuinely excited to be there. This is a great opportunity to start acquiring knowledge for your child’s future. It is also the day the school community will be meeting you and gaining a window into your family for the first time. •

School tours are also a time when the admissions staff is meeting you for the first time—and first impressions stick! •

Schools are small communities where everyone is valued equally. This means everyone; from the security guard at the front door, to the parent giving the tour and the admissions staff members, all must be treated with kindness and respect. Even if you are having a bad

108 • Resident September 2015

Dress appropriately for the tour. It is important to look presentable and dress as if you are taking this tour seriously. Best rule of thumb: If you don’t know anything about the school, think business casual. Also, wear comfortable shoes. Remember it is a tour and you will be walking, climbing stairs, and standing. We are asked by our clients all the time if they should carry certain pocketbooks— this is not a joke. Please be yourself on a tour, carry the bag you like, but remember less is more until you really get to know a school. School tours are a great time to gather information and really learn about a school. Taking notes to help you

remember some things is a good idea, so bring a small pad and pen—but keep your phone away. Turn off all phones and keep them out of sight the entire time you are present in the school. If this is impossible, put your phone on vibrate and only answer for a true emergency. Remember, schools are a small community; a parent tour guide who thinks you are rude is just as bad as the director of admissions thinking the same. •

Ask genuine questions if you have them. Keep your questions to a minimum, however, and know that you will have time to get into your personal questions later, during your interview. School tours are a time to learn, and then go home and reflect on what you have learned. They are not the time to have a oneon-one interview with the tour guide.

Perhaps most importantly, keep an open mind toward all schools and take in all the information you can. You might be surprised at the type of school that speaks to you and your family!

hether you live in a small pied-a-terre or sprawling penthouse, multifunctional pieces are always a good idea—especially in New York City. These are our top five pieces with dual purposes that we just can’t get enough of.

Lorraine Tufted Bench Pottery Barn $799

Cymbal Storage Drum Table Crate and Barrel $199

Storage Coffee Table West Elm $549-$799

Storage benches don’t only look pretty; they provide an ample amount of storage (keeping clutter at bay), and can be placed in a bedroom, foyer, or living room, while providing extra seating as a bonus.

Looking for that perfect small-scale side table? This one only measures about 20” high and 15” wide. It’s quite an attractive little side table, and has a lid with hidden storage.

This clever storage coffee table has always been a favorite. It has a sleek design, abundant hidden space, and on top of that, can be used to eat or write on. Not to mention it comes in a reclaimed wood or white lacquer finish and two different sizes.

Marina Mirror Rack CB2 $229

Duo Side Table Floor Lamp West Elm $399

This mirror/hook combo is perfect for any small entry space in need of a place to hang a coat or bag—while still looking pretty.

Mid-century meets multi-tasker. This is the perfect piece to lounge next to and read your favorite book while drinking a cup of tea.

The symphonic action of color going from the state of Yang (Active/Power) transitioning (Middle/Neutral) to the Yin (Quiet/Complimentary) Left to right, as demonstrated by the Carini Lang Carpet Collections

The Impact of Colors on Your Fashion and Your Home By Feng Shui Master Pun-Yin

A

picture is worth a thousand words, because the colors and patterns radiate a subconscious message that accentuates who we are in that particular moment of time. Therefore, it is important to be wise when choosing personal colors, whether as a fashion statement or while creating a home or working space that that enhances your life and brings you positive energy. Give yourself a competitive edge through the visual cues that support your goals. The symbolism of colors and patterns can affect your emotions, both during the day (Yang) and throughout the night (Yin). The images above left demonstrate the Yang (progressive) energy. These are the colors or patterns that articulate power and command. The Yin (decompressing and passive) energy on the right articulates calmness and balance through association with healing nature. The Yang energy can stimulate and give one a sense of confidence in the workplace. These colors and patterns are active and give power. The carpet on the left illustrates this nicely. The same principles can also be adapted into your wardrobe, having a similar effect. It can be toned down or turned up, depending on your feelings or the impression you wish to create. When we get home, we want to transition

into the state of calmness and balance that will enable us to feel the harmony within and around us. The middle photo demonstrates the flow that can be beneficial to have in a home, through a carpet, a tapestry on the wall, or even in the patterns of the clothes we wear at home. At night, the nurturing Yin energy in the bedroom can heal your body, mind, and spirit, allowing you to wake up refreshed. The serene energy vibration can be created through the textures, colors, or patterns, similar to the image on the right, by having a zen-quality organic carpet, bedding, or pajamas. The choice of materials, colors, shapes, and pattern can create this calming atmosphere. The care, intention, and conditions with which our personal possessions were created also add to the healing vibrations. Each of us has different needs, because our “Five Elements Chinese Astrology Personality Profile” varies; at the same time, the energies in our workplace and home environment are different due to the layout. This means that the solution to our energy needs has to be customized in order to support, inspire, or balance us.

design, which authentic Feng Shui addresses. However, few people really know how to understand energy precisely and correctly, so they often just accumulate “stuff,” and miss out on the chance to create an energy vibration that could be generated through things like a naturally-dyed artistic carpet, or a fashion theme that works in accordance to their personal goals. For those of who want to feel and be their best, it is time to invest in the energy field of their space by understanding that the objects around us have the power to affect your psyche, and therefore your destiny. If it is true that we are the product of our environment, then it’s important to refine your space to matches your intention. Be intentional and discerning when choosing an expert for creating the energy field around you. It starts with the inception of an idea and follows through the whole process. If you wish to create a specific energy field for your life through a carpet with particular Feng Shui objectives, be selective about the authenticity and reputation of the tradesman or tradeswoman who created it. Integrity counts when it comes to healing and energy.

The visuals in our wardrobe, workplace, and home can elevate our potential; it is an art of manifesting energy that goes beyond just

An Alphabet of Colors, a Thousand Words How One Startup is Changing the Language of Gifting and Entertaining By Olia Golovkina

N

o matter what you’re looking to say this time of year, say it with an arrangement from UrbanStems.

An on-demand floral delivery launched by two former college roommates, UrbanStems has brought the focus back to the customer and the fun back to gift-giving. Ajay Kori and Jeff Sheely formed the concept after a particularly scarring delivery experience that nearly ended in a break-up. They decided to engineer a dependable system that lowers overhead costs, centers around human interaction, and uses only responsibly-grown flowers.

UrbanStems lives. And that makes people happy. It also does something wonderful: It makes them perform better and go above and beyond for our customers. Which makes them happy. Which allows us to invest even more in the team. It’s a virtuous cycle we talk a lot about here.

OG: I saw that UrbanStems sources flowers from sustainable farms certified by Rainforest Alliance and Veriflora. How did the founders choose to work with these farms? What alternatives exist for floral farms?

Cameron Hardesty: This was an easy

said, ‘before we actually started UrbanStems, we first decided on the family culture we wanted to create in our company.’ What does ‘family culture’ mean to UrbanStems?

decision for us because environmental preservation aligns with the core mission of our company: To contribute to making the world a happier place. Rainforest Alliance and Veriflora certifications are both gold standards in sustainable and ethical farming practices, which simplified the process of deciding which farms to work with. As for alternatives, we are also adamant about sourcing locally as much as possible and have worked with farms in the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and West Coast.

Ajay Kori:

OG:

We got the chance to speak with Co-Founder Ajay Kori and Director of Products Cameron Hardesty about the company’s past and future, its vision for sustainable agriculture, and, of course, fall’s winds of creative change.

Olia Golovkina: Co-Founder Jeff Sheely

We started with a simple premise: Way too many people hate their jobs. A pretty simple way to make people’s lives better is to create a place where people love to work. And that’s what the UrbanStems family is about. As much as we know that what we’re building is special, we also want people to be successful in their post-

How can New Yorkers use flowers to bring art into their living rooms? Do you have any special tips for our readers?

CH:

I have been especially influenced by German designer Gregor Lersch, who incorporates sculpture and iron work into his designs and uses readily-available materials

like floral wire to create unique, artful structures with flowers. I have also been very inspired by Laura Dowling, the former White House florist, whose use of color in floral design is second to none. For years, she led the design of the White House Christmas decorations, which included intricate sugar sculptures, largescale installations, and a robotic Bo and Sunny. I also draw inspiration from Fusion Flowers magazine and Pim van den Akker’s Flower Factor. My tip to readers would be to ‘think outside the vase’—use nontraditional materials like wire, wax, and wood to artfully arrange flowers.

OG:

For those wishing to send colorful blooms to someone special this fall, which bouquet would you recommend and why?

CH: I would recommend our forthcoming seasonal bouquet, which will be available starting in late September, that features ornamental kale, fragrant eucalyptus, yellow solidago aster, sunflowers, and other stems. It’s an elegant nod to autumn’s yellows and oranges, with a faint hint of crisp eucalyptus that adds ambience to any space.

On Location at The Corner A Look at the September Cover Shoot Backdrop By Pamela Jacobs

n the world of real estate, they say it’s all about location, location, location. When you’re photographing one of the stars of the hottest show on Broadway, and it’s for the cover of your Fall Arts issue, location is everything. We needed something spectacular. Somewhere that screamed New York, epitomized modern luxury, and was worthy of our gorgeous cover girl. Enter The Corner. Located on the corner of 72nd and Broadway (which was fitting, given our star’s credentials), The Corner is a modern classic. Built in 2010, this towering, LEED Silver Certified building with walls of windows features cutting edge design and all things contemporary. Yet with its spacious, light-filled rooms, sweeping Manhattan views, and ideal location, it’s right at home

in this very classic New York neighborhood. Huge windows drench the 196 rental apartments with sun, while eco-logic stone countertops, Sub-Zero refrigerators, huge closets, and in-unit washer-dryers offer up the ultimate in lavish, eco-friendly living. The most difficult part for the producers of the photo shoot was choosing which room to shoot in first—they were all so perfect. Of course, when we stepped onto the 10,000-square-foot landscaped rooftop terrace with stunning panoramic views of the city, we knew we had our cover shot. The photographer was positively giddy. In addition to some of the best views in Manhattan, the roof features a BBQ grill, lounge chairs, gardens, and various areas for relaxation. Additional amenities of The Corner include a fitness center, a resident lounge with

breakfast served Monday through Friday, yoga classes, bike storage, on-site housekeeping, cold storage, valet services, a children’s playroom, and more. It’s the very best of New York City living—in one of its very best neighborhoods. In the end, The Corner turned out to be my favorite location for a cover shoot thus far, and certainly the spot for one of my all-time favorite views of this great city. Starting prices for The Corner: $17,500/month 3-bed $9,400 2-bed $5200 1-bed $3400 studio

Grand, Green Living at Park + Garden By Beth Stanton

W

ith 212 upscale rental residences and 12 stories of luxurious, amenity-rich living, it’s no wonder Park + Garden, Bijou Properties’ latest sustainable residential development, was already 30% reserved by its Grand Opening. Located at 1450 Garden Street on the north end of Hoboken—just minutes from Manhattan—the building features a collection of well-appointed one-, two- and threebedroom residences complemented by firstclass recreational amenities and services. Commuters will also appreciate its ideal location just steps from NY Waterway Ferries and NJ Transit express busses into New York City. Immediate occupancy is available. Select homes boast

spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline. The beauty and luxury extend beyond the residences, of course, with lifestyle-enhancing amenities that include an attended lobby, state-of-the art gym, multiple club rooms, courtyards, outdoor pool and landscaped deck, additional laundry facilities, bike storage, and a 383-car on-site fully automated parking facility. Renters will also have access to a shared multi-use recreational room/basketball court. Of course just beyond the lobby doors a bevy of nightlife and dining awaits. Situated directly across the Hudson River from midtown Manhattan, Hoboken is well-known as one of the most dynamic small cities, with a bustling main street, exciting nightlife, and well-rounded recreational and social opportunities. Park + Garden offers a pedestrian-friendly design with a private street entrance to create an intimate atmosphere while allowing residents to fully embrace all the elements of this walkable residential setting and its easy access to mass transportation. Bijou Properties also sponsors a summer Farmer’s Market held right outside the doors of Park + Garden. Entering its 4th season, the Garden Street Farmer’s Market is located at Garden Street Mews and held every Saturday from June to November. Filled with products from New Jersey farmers and the local Hoboken

community, as well as festive music, the Farmer’s market was created by Bijou Properties to support sustainable agriculture, small businesses and make farm-fresh produce available to the community. Park + Garden has been designed for LEED® Gold certification. Locally-based Bijou Properties is a leader in the field of “Green” development along the Hudson River Gold Coast. Park + Garden is the third LEEDcertified building from the developer in Hoboken and boasts innovative, environmentally-sensitive features to minimize its impact on the environment. These include a vegetated roof terrace that will reduce storm water runoff, a CHP (combined heat and power) module that produces hot water and electricity using a single natural gas fuel source, charging bays for electric cars, and spaces for 200 bicycles. The heating, cooling, and lighting designs, in conjunction with a high performance building envelope and the CHP module, aim to achieve a 20% reduction in energy usage based on industry standard comparisons. With all this earth-friendly luxury, the overwhelming interest in Hoboken’s hottest new address comes as no surprise.

The Charles, 1355 First Avenue Redefining Upper East Side Living By Lauren Maiorana

T

here is much to love when it comes to The Charles in Manhattan. Located at 1355 First Avenue between 72nd and 73rd Streets, these expansive four-bedroom residences offer luxury at every turn. Each 3,000+ square-foot full-floor residence features its own private elevator, radiant heated white-oak flooring, extra-high ceilings, en-suite marble bathrooms, and luxurious eat-in kitchens with state-of-the-art appliances. The Charles also features deluxe amenities and conveniences that include a 24-hour attended lobby, 1,000-square-foot fitness center, game room, and private storage for each residence. Real Estate Brokers Jason Karadus and Ginger Brokaw from TOWN New Development explain to us why The Charles is one of the best—if not the best— places to live on the Upper East Side.

Resident:

What more is there to know about The Charles, and its location in Manhattan, that makes it one of the top places to live in the neighborhood?

Ginger Brokaw:

The Charles has reinvigorated the part of the Upper East Side that sits between Third Avenue and the river. The area is undergoing an exciting renaissance with the addition of the Second Avenue subway and the emergence of desirable retail and new development. As for the building itself, we find that most homebuyers are drawn to the airy, full-floor layouts and the privacy. Each residence has a private elevator and is absolutely flooded with light from floor-to-ceiling windows.

Resident: Can you tell us more about the

118 • Resident September 2015

design firm who created each masterfullydesigned residence?

GB: The interiors were a collaboration between David Collins Studio and architect Ismael Leyva, who also designed the building’s exterior. Together, the team has created a space that is very modern in its finishes, yet old world and somewhat European in the generosity of its space, the quiet privacy of the residences, and the warm, classic sophistication of the design. We find that first time visitors to The Charles are also struck by the tremendous volume of light and air in each of the homes, which is a wonderful achievement on the part of the designers.

Resident: Is there anything else about The Charles that makes it stand out from other luxury townhouse residences on the Upper East Side?

Jason Karadus: The Charles has broken price records for properties east of Third Avenue. In addition to sweeping city views and ample space, the building offers a truly white-glove, boutique living experience, harkening back to its classic, Upper East Side heritage. With only 27 homes at the building, the ratio of staff to residents is extremely high. As we’ve mentioned, the homes are all fullfloor and built to be ultra-quiet. Each has a separate service entrance, eat-in kitchen, four en-suite bedrooms—which is very rare for Manhattan—and a soaring great room, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows. The designers have truly recreated the best of townhouse living in the sky.
