THE EDITOR A

s I wrap up this September issue, I have a few thoughts: 1) How has the summer gone by so quickly?; 2) I’ve loved being back here at the Resident and helping to make it even bigger and better; and 3) this issue was incredibly fun and exciting to work on—in many ways, a dream come true. That may sound like an exaggeration, but here’s the thing: This issue brought me the opportunity to meet and interview Renée Elise Goldsberry, one of the stars of Hamilton, which is the most talked-about Broadway show I can remember. First of all, to say Renée is talented is a huge understatement. She’s a brilliant singer and actress. She’s also one of the warmest, most down-to-earth people you can ever have the pleasure of meeting. Then there’s the show itself. It’s hilarious and heartbreaking, moving and uplifting—it’s truly magnificent. There’s a reason the Obamas, the Clintons, and countless celebrities have flocked to it. I can’t really overemphasize how much I loved it—nor can I overstate how much I enjoyed talking to Renée about her role in Hamilton and her life as a Broadway star, mother, wife, and New Yorker. Of course the rest of the issue was pretty exciting too; in our search for the best fashions

of the season and the top picks for fall films, art exhibits, books, theater, TV shows, and music, I learned exactly how I’ll be keeping myself busy this autumn. Finally, I’m a tropical-travel junkie—palm trees and pina coladas make me weak in the knees. I got to travel (vicariously and actually) to some of the prettiest warm-weather destinations through this September issue, and that made me a very happy editor.

My hope is that this issue inspires you to embrace the arts of the season in all their forms, book plane tickets to paradise, and shop ‘til you drop. And if you haven’t yet, go see Hamilton immediately. Beg, borrow, steal, or sell your firstborn if you must. You’ll thank me.

American Style in NYC, This Fall and Beyond By Hillary Latos

ew York City is known as one of the unequivocal fashion capitals of the world, and the perfect embodiment of American style. It’s the breeding ground for some of the most iconic American labels in history, and a hotbed for the next generation of fashion icons. On the eve of New York Fashion Week, when the most anticipated styles of Spring 2016 will grace the runways, we spoke to fashion influencers to get their perspective on the industry and what’s hot for fall.

Velvet: SoCal-Cool on the UES As dress codes in the workplace have become more relaxed, the easygoing-yet-polished look has been happily embraced by New Yorkers. Velvet perfectly represents that effortlessly chic Southern California aesthetic. Launched in 1997 by friends Jenny Graham and Toni Spencer, Velvet is produced solely in the U.S., and the brand can be found in leading department stores and boutiques nationwide, and now in Velvet boutiques on Madison Avenue and in Southampton.

Resident Magazine: Tell me a bit about your decision to launch in the Hamptons and NY this year.

RM: How did you get started in designing and working together?

Jenny Graham: We’ve always wanted an East Coast presence. The whole idea of the Hamptons fits perfectly with our customer, so we jumped at the chance to be there. The Madison Ave. store was a long time coming. We waited and waited to get the best location we possibly could; being on the Upper East Side is a dream come true. We knew where we wanted to be and what we wanted our store to look like. We’ve been planning for some time!

RM: How do you think the LA style translates to NY?

Toni Spencer: LA style in general is pretty misunderstood, and I think in the past it’s been unfairly dismissed. There’s no doubt a laid-back influence to it, thanks to the easygoing way of life, but that doesn’t mean we’re all wafting around in old tees and frayed cut-offs. To me, the LA aesthetic is really about understated, cool style. Girls here have a very unique way of putting stuff together that looks utterly effortless. I think the fashion world has really come to appreciate this lately. To answer your question, I think LA style translates perfectly to NY. What New Yorker doesn’t want to look understated, cool, and chic?

RM: What do you think are some of the key

pieces and silhouettes for fall?

TS:

The peacoat is our favorite jacket silhouette for fall—we did a long version and a shorter, blazer style. The oversized, slouchy boyfriend cardigan with the flirty, girly dress is also a look we love, especially when it’s transitioning and you don’t want to bundle up in loads of layers, and you still want to feel super cute. The dolman sleeve sweater is also a great retro 70s silhouette that’s very on-trend, but classic. It’s a great way to look chic and casual, which is kind of our whole M.O.

RM: What was your inspiration for the fall collection? JG:

We’re inspired by eclectic and wideranging sources. It could be a movie or an exhibit we attend; all our cultural scavenging sort of meshes together on the mood board, and out of that we build our collection. For this season, we were loving Catherine Deneuve in Belle de Jour, Ali McGraw in Love Story, and images of Marianne Faithful in her Mick era. We were thinking about classic Americana and Native American textiles, hence the plaid and fringe. There’s also a slightly preppy influence. All these ideas are filtered through our signature, laidback California aesthetic.

Etienne Aigner: Reclaiming and Revitalizing a Heritage Brand Etienne Aigner was originally a bookbinder during WWI, later designing bespoke handbags for haute couture houses such as Christian Dior and Hermes, before launching his eponymous line. The line experienced ebbs and flows over the last 50 years, becoming over-distributed and diluted—and disappeared for a number of years—until its latest resuscitation last year under the design direction of Daniela Bardazzi. To keep the heritage of the brand, while making it current and simultaneously launching a ready-to-wear line, Bardazzi spends time trying to rebuild Aigner’s archives through vintage shopping and careful research.

Resident Magazine:

Who or what was your inspiration behind the latest collection?

Daniela Bardazzi: We were listening to Patty Smith while designing, and we were working with a lot of texture. We chose a waxy finish leather and created a moto jacket with a croc emboss, and used it in our handbags and shoes. Our imagery was ‘what if Patty Smith had to open for the Ballet Russe; what would she wear?’ Our version of a Chelsea boot was also inspired by her, with a block heel, almond toe, and heavy welts.

RM:

What do you think will be the key

shapes and materials for fall?

DB: We were opting for more opulence this season, using the phrase ‘casual opulence,’ so you can get up and go anywhere, but there’s an ease to it. We used a lot of neoprene—but a more refined version that’s thinner and lighter, which was used in dresses and pants that felt structured yet soft. We loved that juxtaposition with a refined silhouette.

RM: What are some of your favorite pieces? DB:

RM: How have you woven the heritage of Etienne Aigner in the line to speak to today’s women? DB: He had an industrialist spirit about him, and fashioned a lot of hardware from bits and hinges and found objects, and we kept his signature buckles that go onto every bag, and metal keepers that he always used; everything has a function.

Charriol: The Long-Awaited American Debut As the daughter of luxury jeweler Phillipe Charriol, who established his namesake luxury watch and jewelry line in 1983, Coralie Charriol has grown up in the jewelry industry. The brand’s signature pieces draw on Celtic culture, using steel and gold cable. They’ve been sold worldwide, but are launching the full line for the first time in the U.S this season. In her role as Creative Director, Coralie has reinvigorated the brand, adding a contemporary twist to the established lines, drawing from her cosmopolitan, jetset sensibility.

Resident Magazine:

What challenges have you faced entering the U.S. Market for the full line?

Corolie Charriol: Charriol has been in the U.S. for the past 30 years, selling watches and gold jewelry. However, for the first time in the U.S. we are selling the global steel and silver Charriol jewelry collection, which is the iconic trademark of the brand. It’s the collection that I have been designing for the past few years. There are always challenges when introducing a new line, but that’s the exciting part. We have planned several launch parties, exclusive trunk shows, and a global initiative promoting higher education for girls and women.

RM: How have you evolved the brand and direction? CC: As the Creative Director, designing is a big part of my role in the company. Each jewelry collection is a result of my own life

and travel experiences, interpreting those into a collection of pieces that are luxurious yet practical. The focus is on the Charriol customer—always thinking of what they want next, and how to put a piece on their wrist, around their neck, or on their finger that will inspire them to be the person they want to be.

CC: My style is a mix between European and

I love things that are unique—things that make a statement. I love finding the newest next ‘it’ piece. My style is chic but relaxed.

What are some of your favorite pieces from the collection?

CC: The must-have pieces this year are the Forever bangles & St-Tropez 35 watch, a special new style of the popular St-Tropez collection, with a moon phase complication. The Forever bangles come in different colors and sizes, and I love stacking and collecting them—having an arm full of bangles. The beauty of the bangles is that they all match and can be worn together.

RM: How would you describe your overall aesthetic?

American, as I was born in Hawaii and raised between Hong-Kong, Paris, London, and New York. I have learned to mix my heritages. My father comes from France and has taught me all the good things in life. My mother, who was a model and interior designer, has taught me about aesthetic.

RM:

What do you like most about fall in

NYC?

CC: Fall in NYC in the best!!

It’s always like an Indian summer. I love sneaking out to the beach or upstate for weekends, picking apples and eating roasted corn. The city feels cool and crisp, and so alive!

Suite Sensation Top picks from a spirited round of awards-show gift-suite hopping. By Darralynn Hutson

ifting suites and pamper lounges have grown in popularity and have become an expected and important part of every award show, especially for celebrity publicists looking to introduce clients to new brands. While the goal in return for new companies is to get their names into the hands of these influencers, as well as the media, gifting suites have become more diverse in their presentations and their locations. For the lucky few and their entourage who get invited to them, these oases of freebies include anything from technology driven cyborgs to hand-made haircare products and crowd pleasers. Although offering products to influencers is nothing new, the approach has changed over the years—yet still remains largely all about the products. Here’s a glimpse at some of the best discovered new brands while Resident went Gift Suite Hopping.

Illumination PR invited us to the BETX’ Official Celebrity Gift Lounge presented by Fandango, which opened its doors in the LA Live Convention Center Center’s downtown location, where all the BET Awards and BET Experience action took place on Saturday June 27th and Sunday June 28th. Offering gifts from Sean John, Hennessy, Reebok, Cover Girl, CURLS, STARZ, Satin Lined Caps, and Express Smile Atlanta, this official suite introduced us to a great couple who created a drinking game called “Never Have I Ever.” Neverhaveiever.org has amassed a pretty nice following, with over 14k suggested statements to be added to the next edition of the competition.

The suite and lounge were powered by Pynk Magazine and meticulously included everything girls love: A seated, buffet-style 12-course brunch with fresh omelets and waffle station, on-site makeup application, eyelash bar, flowing cocktails, manicures, pedicures, and massages, in addition to three rooms and a massive hallway of gifting.

Another delightful gift came as a sweet treat from a mother and daughter team, “So Unique Candy Apples,” specializing in a selection of flavored candy apples. We were able to take selfies with celebrities, including professional boxer Floyd Mayweather, who hosted a Genius Talk at the BET Experience that afternoon, Karrueche Tran, and Soulja Boy, who rode a cyborg craft throughout the suite to everyone’s amazement.

The Powerhouse Agency invited us to two of their events, including the chance to experience the new cyborgs firsthand at the Cyborg Lounge, and their Rolls Royce ESPYS Trendsetters Celebrity Gifting Suite, hosted at Rolls Royce Beverly Hills O’Gara Coach dealership with The Velvet Rope. Immediately upon walking in, the ambiance screamed wealth. Celebs were treated to Rolls Royce escorts that picked them up and dropped them off at the front door, which was transformed into a suite of gifting vendors. The most notable favorites were the LA-based sunglass company, CaliSons, makers of handcrafted, woodcarved stylish shades, whose owners shared stories of their Venice lineage and the challenges of getting up and running. The brand that clearly spent the most in merchandising and branding was J Beverly Hills by Juan Juan. His gifting included several pieces from his men’s haircare collection, including moisturizing shampoo, daily conditioner, molding putty, shaper, strong hold, shave gel, lotion, and a beautiful coffee table product book in a branded bag. It all just felt so classy.

Gloria and Emilio Estefan are singer-songwriters who changed the record business and stayed married. Two good reasons to catch their bio-musical. A third reason: Its familiar, catchy tunes are backed by a multiple-award-winning creative team.

David Mamet’s admiration for Glenn Beck is rather strange, but the man can write. Besides, no-one yells like Al Pacino, and his long-awaited return to Broadway already has a lot of people dashing for a seat at this limited-run production.

Based on the legendary Walking Dead, this companion series is set in L.A. when the zombie outbreak begins and during the time Rick Grimes was in a coma. Expect a big change from the original though; this drama focuses on a family and the problems it faces in the midst of a world in crisis. Premiered August 23.

Returning in the fall for its third season, Ray Donovan not only broke Showtime records for most-viewed premiere, but earned two Golden Globe nominations and numerous other awards in its two-year lifetime. Not surprisingly, it has gone on to produce quite a large, and loyal, fan base. Liev Schreiber stars as Ray, a professional “fixer” for the rich and famous in L.A., but not without a hectic past following him from his hometown of Boston. Jon Voight and Paula Malcomson also star. 1. Otello Current events sometimes seep into the most conservative of artistic institutions. The Metropolitan Opera is opening its season with Verdi’s “Otello.” Although it has been staged here for over a century, there will be one difference: The title character will not appear with dark makeup. The opera will undoubtedly have dramatic and musical clout; the title role will be played by tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko, who was an intense Don Jose in “Carmen” last season. Soprano Sonya Yoncheva, Desdemona in the production, had one of those star-is-born experiences last season. The Met contacted her at her home in Switzerland only weeks after she had given birth to her son and asked her to fill in for the lead in “La Boheme,” so she quickly learned the role. She received rave reviews. Baritone Željko Lučić (an expert at playing heavies) is Iago. Director Bartlett Sher is moving the action to the late 19th century and Yannick NézetSéguin will conduct.

2. Eric Owens The superb bass-baritone Eric Owens is Artist-in-Residence at the New York Philharmonic this season. He will show off his versatility in a series of concerts, singing Wagner, Mahler, theater music, and even the Grinch. The first of his concerts, at which he is both performer and curator, is “In Their Footsteps: Great African American Singers and Their Legacy” on October 14 and 15. This will be a tribute to black vocalists who

rose to prominence despite racial barriers. The four being honored are William Warfield, Betty Allen, George Shirley, and Marian Anderson. The program at Avery Fisher Hall will include spirituals, excerpts from “Treemonisha,” “Porgy and Bess,” and Mahler’s “Songs of a Wayfarer.” In addition to Owens, the vocalists at the concert will be sopranos Janai Brugger and Laquita Mitchell, mezzo-soprano Marietta Simpson, and tenor Russell Thomas.

3. Bill Withers Withers is one of the most mysterious figures in American popular music. Plagued by a stutter throughout his childhood, he taught himself to play guitar and started writing songs in his 20’s. Music executive Clarence Avant heard a demo and signed him up. Withers soon had a string of hit songs, starting with “Ain’t No Sunshine,” followed by “Lean on Me.” After about eight years, he became disenchanted with the music business and stopped writing and performing. Withers will be honored at Carnegie Hall, a concert titled “Lean on Him,” on October 1st by an all-star lineup, including Aloe Blacc, Amos Lee, Michael McDonald, Dr. John, Keb’ Mo’, Gregory Porter, Kathy Mattea and Ledisi. The great man himself is set to appear and profits from the concert will benefit the Stuttering Association for the Young.

4. The New Goldberg Variations J.S. Bach’s masterpiece, first published in

1741 and written for the harpsichord, has been played on different instruments and in different styles. It has been transcribed for organ, string trio, guitar, harp and brass quartet, to name a few. Now, Joe Chindamo has a new version for violin and piano, which he recorded with Zoe Black. He has said about the venture: “When Zoe asked me if I would write a part for her, the only self-imposed rule was that I would not alter a single note Bach wrote, and decided to adhere to Bach’s language and aesthetic.” Pianist Chindamo and violinist Black will perform the Goldberg Variations at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall on Wednesday, September 30th at 8:00 p.m.

5. The Cookers “Night of the Cookers” is a classic jazz album, recorded at Club La Marchal in Brooklyn in 1965 by trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan. The Cookers, named after the famous session, is a hard bop group of master musicians—Billy Harper on tenor sax, Eddie Henderson on trumpet, David Weiss on trumpet, George Cables on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, Billy Hart on drums, and new member Donald Harrison, replacing Craig Handy on alto sax. Their latest album on Motema is “Time and Time Again.” This is a band that comes to play. If you want to hear classic driving jazz, come to Jazz at Lincoln Center between September 10 and 13.

For some of the most innovative and exciting theater, Off-Broadway beckons this season: 1. Eclipsed The Public Theater is presenting the New York premiere of “Eclipsed” by playwright/ actress Dani Gurira, directed by Liesl Tommy. Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o will star. The drama is set in Liberia during the civil war in 2003. The central characters are four women held captive by the insurgents fighting President Charles Taylor. They are all “wives” of the rebel leader and refer to themselves

The Mint Theater has a distinguished record of finding forgotten plays and giving them sparkling productions. The fall season is beginning with “The New Morality” by Harold Chapin, directed by Jonathan Bank (the Mint’s artistic director). Chapin was born in Brooklyn in 1886, but at age three his actress mother brought him to England, where he became an actor at age 7, and later a stage manager and playwright. At the beginning of World War

4. Lazarus How about one more Ivo van Hove production? New York Theatre Workshop will present a new musical, “Lazarus,” inspired by “The Man Who Fell to Earth.” David Bowie starred in the movie. The lead role of the alien in the stage version will be played by Michael C. Hall. Bowie has composed new songs for the show and re-arranged some of his earlier pieces. The book is by Enda Walsh. “Lazarus” starts previews on November 18 and opens on December 7.

5. Ripcord Manhattan Theatre Club is about to present its sixth collaboration with David LindsayAbaire. “Ripcord,” his latest comedy, will be directed by David Hyde Pierce. “Ripcord” is set in the Bristol Place Assisted Living Facility. Abby (Holland Taylor) has one of the nicer rooms, but is saddled with a new roommate, Marilyn (Marylouise Burke). They embark on a deadly turf battle.

“Eclipsed” is running from September 29 November 8.

Austin Stark With The Runner, the Filmmaker Breaks New Ground By Skylar Lewis

ustin Stark is a writer, director, producer, and founding partner of the NYC-based film production company, Paper Street Films, and a New Yorker to look out for. Over the past eight years, he has produced hits like Infinitely Polar Bear with Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana, Tony Kaye’s Detachment, starring Adrien Brody, the 2010 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award winner Happythankoumoreplease, and Werner Herzog’s My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done? “I think I’m a strong leader and a creative person, which for a filmmaker is an essential combination,” Stark says of his success. His love for the film industry sparked when he began to surround himself with friends who were studying filmmaking at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. At the time, Stark was 19-years-old, studying to be a fictional writer at Georgetown University. The summer of his sophomore year he wrote his first screenplay. As is the fate of most first scripts, it was never produced, but it made

him realize his true calling. Stark, now 36, resides in New York City and finds himself at the most successful point in his career.

Nicolas Cage in The Runner In August, Stark made his writing and directorial debut with the release of The Runner, which stars Nicolas Cage, Sarah Paulson, Peter Fonda, and Connie Nielsen. Stark says The Runner is an American story—a fictional portrait of an idealistic but flawed congressman named Colin Pryce, played by Cage. On one level, it’s the story of a politician struggling to rebuild his life after a sex scandal destroys his career. On another, it’s a meditation on the archetype of the politician: The public versus private persona, idealism versus compromise. But, at its core, the film is about a man’s hunger to become a great leader without sacrificing his beliefs. The film is set in the aftermath of the 2010 BP oil spill, which devastated the Gulf Coast. “It’s exciting to me that this is the first narrative film to tackle the spill,” said Stark. “But with that comes great responsibility, and I’ve tried to portray

the region during the disaster as accurately as I could.”

The BP Oil Spill Stark’s original concept for the film did not actually involve the BP oil spill. The idea took shape after he spent several weeks doing research for the project in Louisiana during the summer of 2011, realizing that a year after the catastrophe it was still on the forefront of everyone’s minds in New Orleans. “It felt organic to set the film in that time and place,” Stark explains. “The Gulf Coast during the oil spill becomes a metaphor for the life Colin Pryce is forced to rebuild. The story also provides insight into the disaster.” Stark says he has accomplished his goal. “Regardless of how The Runner performs at the box office, I’m very proud of my film. With the current political climate, there has never been a better time for The Runner.”

arisian-born Jacqueline Beaumont owned two dresses when she married Édouard, Vicomte de Ribes. Long before that, during the occupation, Jacqueline and her siblings were sent to her grandfather’s summer home in Hedaye with a nanny. The Scottish nanny was arrested and sent to a labor camp, and clothes and food were rationed by tickets. The children and a French governess were left to fend for themselves in a cottage, while the Gestapo lived in the main house. After her thirteenth birthday, Jacqueline was sent by her parents, Count and Countess de Beaumont, to the convent Le Oiseaux in Vermiuel. In 1947, Jacqueline met her husband—a war hero and scion from a noble family of financiers—by chance at a friend’s luncheon in Cote Basque. As the newly-married wife of the vicomte, strict rules of decorum were

Cassandra Seidenfeld Rises in The Night of 75 Stars By Isaiah Negron

t’s been a busy summer for Cassandra Seidenfeld, who went from sharing the stage with Alec Baldwin and Bob Balaban in Guild Hall’s production of The Night of 75 Stars to playing a major role in The Rep’s August Osage County in Little Rock, Arkansas. Under the direction of Bob Hupp, Cassandra assayed the pivotal role of Johnna Monevata for over 10,000 people during the run of the show.

Next up is a leading role in Lisa Crapella’s 2016 feature film The Story of Jesus, in which she will play Mary of Bethany. Cassandra is known in the industry as a classically-trained performer who consistently gives criticallypraised performances.

TheRun “For the first time in my brief theater history, though I’ve loved the theater all my life, I can appreciate the hard work and collective effort to do work that is outside the perceived bracket of ‘theater’,” she explains.

Cassandra’s other passion is helping women and children by organizing and chairing events that can make a difference. “I have an extra sensitivity when it comes to children because they’re so vulnerable and are often overlooked,” reveals the caring humanitarian. “That niche needs more attention so I have a more heightened focus on those organizations.”

A graduate of Columbia University, Seidenfeld discovered her passion for the theater while studying, fueled by her love for Shakespeare’s plays. “One of my favorite roles was playing Viola and Cesario in Twelfth Night,” says Cassandra. “I love all his plays and I know them front to back.” Cassandra has also appeared on the CBS television show Person ofTone Interest with Jim Caviezel and Taraji Henson. Cassandra is an active philanthropic force for good and was recently nominated to be on the Advisory Board of the Lamont-Doherty Observation Earth Conservatory (LDEO). She is also a Global Advisory Board Member & Global Ambassador of Women4Empowerment, an organization committed to ending violence against women, and Sunshine Family Global, a nonprofit aimed at building a global

sustainable community. “My work has a common thread in helping people and giving back, whether it be through social awareness or helping to build and rebuild infrastructure,” she explains. “Even just smiling at someone is a way of giving back some part of you. I’m blessed that I’m able to do that.” She is also one of the original producers of the First Women’s Fashion & Film Festival in New York City and the Oberon Theater Ensemble. Whether she’s in the spotlight on the stage or screen or behind the scenes helping those in need, Cassandra is a bright star who is destined to burn even brighter. “I want to keep learning, growing and staying open to new possibilities,” she muses. “My goal is to take every opportunity to grow as a person and do whatever I can to give back for as long as I can.”

roadway’s Hamilton is like nothing you’ve ever seen—and is everything you’ve ever hoped for, or dreamed of, in theater. Set in the late 1700s, it’s as modern as anything on Broadway ever has been, and is relevant to every person, regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status. At the risk of sounding like I’m gushing—and it’s worth the risk—it is a perfect piece of art.

Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton tells the story of one of the country’s founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton, of whom most Americans know nothing more than that he was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr, and that his face is on the $10 bill. Through rap, hip hop, pop, and traditional theater music, the passion, romance, love, sex, ambition, and heartache of the country’s history-makers is brought brilliantly, astoundingly to life. Personally, I believe Lin-Manuel Miranda is the Shakespeare of our time, a man who is making history, not just writing about it. Of course the most brilliant theatrical storytelling in the world is nothing without an equally brilliant cast. Creating Hamilton required the levels of talent and perfection from its cast that its writer possessed, and the cast certainly delivered. Case in point: Renée Elise Goldsberry. No stranger to acting, singing, and stunning audiences with her beauty and extreme talent, Goldsberry’s performance as Angelica Schuyler, Hamilton’s sister-in-law, is flawless, powerful, evocative, and just plain wonderful. Angelica Schuyler may be the role Goldsberry is getting the most attention for right now—but it’s certainly not her first or only time making theater audiences fall in love with her. She won awards for her performance in Shakespeare in the Park’s Two Gentlemen of Verona; she originated the role of Nettie in The Color Purple on Broadway; she was the last actress to play Mimi Marquez in Broadway’s Rent; and she charmed kids and adults alike as Nala in The Lion King on Broadway. Goldsberry also honed her drama skills on One Life to Live for five years—for which she won several Daytime Emmy’s—and has graced the big and small screen in numerous other roles, including TV’s The Good Wife and The Following.

While this highly impressive, award-winning beauty might be entrenched in one of the biggest roles of her life, it’s certainly not the only important one. Because in addition to performing eight shows per week, recording a soundtrack, and speaking to people like me, Goldsberry is a wife and mother, and it’s clear from the smile on her face when she talks about her husband and two young children, that this is truly the role of her lifetime. Basically, Renée Elise Goldsberry is superwoman—and her humility and generosity of spirit only make you love her more. It’s no wonder this woman is singing about history and creating it. Pamela Jacobs: Hamilton is one of the biggest sensations to hit Broadway in decades. When you first started working on it, did you have any idea that it would be the massive hit it’s become? Renée Elise Goldsberry: When I first heard Lin-Manuel Miranda’s demo of the song I sing in the show, my jaw hit the floor—I thought ‘this is the mother lode.’ People send stuff all the time to prepare or audition for, but this was unlike anything I’d ever heard, and I couldn’t even take it in in a single hearing. I was like ‘wow, this is huge, this is it.’ I hadn’t even planned to participate at that point because I had just brought my daughter home from Africa—our second child is adopted—and I was on a self-imposed maternity leave; but just the way life works out, as soon as you say ‘I’m not leaving the house for two months,’ something comes along that you just can’t say no to. I hadn’t heard any of the other songs yet—and my song is one of 50 amazingly miraculous songs and moments—it only took that one to know that it was going to be a huge hit. If I was in the audience and saw this, my mind would be blown. PJ: Obviously the music is what you first heard, but it’s one of many brilliant aspects of the show. Are there other specifics that you can pinpoint as to why this show is so special and so beloved? REG: It’s impossible to single out anything in the show, because you feel as if you’re cheating on some other aspect that’s just as impactful and emotional. It started with a story about somebody that we don’t know much about, shockingly—Alexander Hamilton—and the way Ron Chernow writes this biography is so much more than just what could be historical dates and facts. It’s about relationships and emotions; there’s a drama involved in this person’s life, and this biographer captured the drama. Lin is also a great storyteller, and he was blown away by the life of a person he thought he knew. To quote him, I think he said, ‘I can’t believe no one’s already written this.’ I think he spent a lot of time trying to figure out where the musical was that was already written about this. He couldn’t believe that he came across this particular story and no one had told it. I think that’s divine, because I don’t know of a better storyteller than Lin-Manuel Miranda; I don’t know of a more unique and important voice—his sensitivity to what’s the most human, what’s the most dramatic, and what’s the most universal in every person’s story. On top of that, it’s really about the influence that comes out of him [Manuel]. He is what we all are—an amalgam of a million different voices and sounds we hear all the time because of the media now. Media now is iPods, iMusic, your playlist. In fact, the show was originally called ‘Hamilton Mixtape,’ which is almost more appropriate; the way you would make a playlist to capture all the particular things you want to convey.

PJ: Your character is an actual, historical character, not just a fictional character, so did you have to do a lot of research into her as a real person? REG: I had the benefit of the work that had already been done in the biography, and some of the most dramatic parts of her life were there and manipulated by Lin. But really when you’re playing a character, it’s more of a soul searching of who you are than who that person is. Really you read about the character and see the decisions they’ve made, but you’re looking within yourself and the world around you to fulfill those moments in the richest way possible. PJ: Is it different when you’re originating a role— you’re the first actor to play Angelica and breathing life into this character? REG: I was the last to play Mimi in Rent, and that show was another important and landscape-changing gift to the world, and it was a great bookend experience for me. That character in many ways was the exact opposite of Angelica, but both extremely strong women who are living powerfully with the burden of their time. So I had the many, many women who played Mimi before me, whose shoulders I stood on, but I’m Renée Goldsberry, not them, and I’m not going to just copy them—although you do have the advantage of seeing things other people do and saying ‘Oh, that’s fabulous,’ but the most you can give any role is whatever is most unique to you. So in that way, there isn’t much of a difference, originating a role or not. I’ll do what I’m going to do whether I’m the first or the hundredth playing the character. PJ: You’ve done big screen, small screen, lots of theater and Broadway—do you have a favorite? Is Broadway the epitome? REG: Theater, I’d say, not just Broadway. Broadway is what the world says it is; it’s the profile and the hope that the better a show does somewhere, it will make it to Broadway. A show is a success not because it is on Broadway, but because every high school, every regional theater wants to then do it. That’s the value of Broadway, it’s the force that sends it out into the world so it can be as

far-reaching as possible.

Everything has its pluses and minuses; the minus in theater—and the plus—is that it exists in that moment and then it’s gone. It doesn’t matter how brilliant I was every single night before you come to the show, if it doesn’t work on the night you come, it didn’t matter. So what’s challenging about getting a lot of praise and acclaim [in theater] is you have to live up to that again every night and believe that the gift will come again to make it real in that moment.

REG: I typically don’t want to know that a particular person is there, because I feel, in theory, I’m more free if I’m not wondering what they’re thinking. I want to know at the end, when I’m walking offstage—then I can be like ‘yay,’ or ‘oh well!’ [laughs].

It’s nice in film and television to have an honest, beautiful moment that’s captured and can live forever. When I leave the show [Hamilton], it’s over; I’ll have my stories and memories, but I do love that TV and film keeps giving. But, what’s beautiful and amazing and wonderful about theater is probably it is the most satisfying, in terms of how much of yourself is demanded. The bar is so high, and you can’t compartmentalize what you’re doing, especially in a musical that’s this resonant and deep; there’s no part of who you are that isn’t called for and useful, and that’s very satisfying when you can pull it off. The other thing is the role the audience plays in creating a beautiful moment in theater; that’s at least 40% of what we’re experiencing onstage. PJ: The show is so relevant today, socially, and politically. Are there certain themes that resonate especially with you? REG: There are things that come to mind, politically, but really it’s the universal truths that are relevant now and always, that move me the most. Forgiveness, love, the choices that a woman has to make—these are always relevant and interesting. Whether it’s battling over immigration laws, the lines drawn between personal and political lives, controversies, conflicts—all these things that existed then are relevant and poignant now. PJ: You’ve had quite a few distinguished people in the audience; you performed in front of the Obamas, for instance. Are you thinking about

It had been a dream of mine—the idea of performing for a president, in particular that president. I remember when he first became president and went to see Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, I thought, ‘Oh my God, can you imagine what it’s like to be those actors?’ I thought it was the biggest thing that could happen to any performer doing any show ever, so the fact that it happened to me is an example of what God can do in your life in terms of dreams coming true. As a company we were so excited about telling him this story, that honor and responsibility trumped nerves and anxiety. Everything else was insignificant to showing this particular story to a sitting president—and this sitting president. We had the honor of performing it for Michelle Obama first, which was also a dream come true. She came backstage after and she was as lovely and gracious and beautiful as I hope Angelica Schuyler could be—the perfect example of what this woman I’m playing would aspire to be. We’ve had Joe Biden, Dick Cheney, de Blasio, Bloomberg. Oh, and the Clintons—they were like our first royalty. Chelsea came and then came back a few weeks later with her parents. But whether you’re the leader of the free world or a high school kid from the Bronx, there’s no difference in terms of how important we feel it is to share this story with you. Not only does it need to be told because of the things that Hamilton made that we inherited, the seeds he planted, but also we tell stories because it helps us lead better lives, and we need to hear about what other people suffered and overcame, how they failed, sacrificed, struggled, and won, and

why we have this. We need to hear about how these young people fought for their legacy so we don’t stay complacent. That’s the power of history, which the show s making sexy again. History isn’t boring, it’s a soap opera; there’s nobody’s life that isn’t dramatic, funny, tragic—it’s just how you tell the story.

That was decades ago, and I was recently thinking ‘what if that had been?’ Now, years later, I think he’d say, “Renée, it’s okay if this, now, is your swan song.’ Everything at this point just feels like grace.

PJ: It seems to be working, as every review is overwhelmingly positive, with words like ‘miraculous,’ ‘life-changing,’ and ‘the show of the century.’

REG: It is.

REG: Here’s the thing: I think we tend to do that. Every year there’s a hit movie or show that we do that to—and I try to remind myself of that to stay grounded and focused—but the importance of remembering this happens is it makes the next writer who is behind Lin even more real.

REG: It would not be possible to have this dream-cometrue experience if I didn’t have the most supportive husband in the whole wide world. Years ago, when I was dreaming up this significant other before I’d even met him, I remember thinking I need the kind of man who can deal with the extremes of the life of an actress. Can you deal with me when I don’t have to leave the house because I haven’t had a job in months and have no money? Can you be the one who supports me when I’m totally disillusioned, and can you be Mr. Goldsberry and hold my purse on the side of the red carpet? Can you do those extremes? It’s not easy—the man who can support you totally when you have so little to give is a very unique creature, and by the grace of God, I have the most perfect one in the world.

PJ: Maybe you’re the good luck charm, actually. REG: I’m in a show with a beautiful company of people, the most diverse and fascinating group of souls that I’ve met. So many of them are so young and probably my favorite thing for the rest of my life will be to watch their careers and how they develop and what they’ve learned from this experience. Years and years ago I won the John Lennon songwriting contest; I lived in Los Angeles and it was the first year of this contest, and my partner and I submitted four or five songs, and one of them won Rock Song of the Year. This guy that I used to sing demos for said ‘that’s really awesome, just don’t make it your swan song.’

PJ: I imagine that your family is the most important role for you.

PJ: How do you manage doing eight performances a week and having two young children?

Most importantly, he’s just very happy for me—he loves the show more than I do, if that’s possible. He’d be supportive anyway, even if he didn’t love it, but it’s helpful that when I come home he’s listening to the demos. He just wants me to be happy and I am happy, because he is wonderful. I couldn’t leave if my husband, my son, and my daughter weren’t happy; it wouldn’t be worth it. If it were stealing something they needed I couldn’t do it. If this isn’t happiness, I

don’t know if it exists. PJ: Your son has seen the show a few times— how does it feel performing in front of him, of all people? REG: There are moments during the show that I think a lot about him—so I thought when he was there that I would be a wreck, because I am impacted by family or friends when I know a certain moment will resonate with them personally, but ironically when he was there I was more staid. I feel like my character is stronger and less vulnerable when he’s there, maybe subconsciously, to protect him. The beauty of my character is that she can be all those things.

PJ: And you brought your son to the premier party. REG: The first time I brought him was when it closed at the Public Theater, because that was his sixth birthday and I couldn’t not be with him, and the second time was on opening night. They made a 5:00 show and he didn’t have school, so he stayed for the party, and he was just the life of the party—break dancing in the middle of the dance floor all night long. Part of me had this idea that I wouldn’t bring them around too much, because I didn’t want to influence them too much to be a part of this life; this life, you have to do it if it’s your passion. Never stop yourself if it’s what you really want and need to do, and if anyone tells you not to, they are wrong. I want that for my kids, whether it’s science or visual arts or politics, I want them to follow their passion and their dreams.

thiopian-born Chef Marcus Samuelsson was one year old when tuberculosis took away his mother. He and his sister, once recovered from the disease, fled to adoptive parents in Sweden. Marcus tasted blueberries for the first time. He bought his first Bob Marley album. He began his studies at the Culinary Institute in Gothenburg. Fast forward to 2010 and Chef Marcus was in New York opening Red Rooster Harlem—a local hot spot where Ethiopian spices come together with Swedish influences for a fresh yet familiar take on fried chicken, barbeque pork, macaroni and cheese—“a place,” he states on his website, “where people from all walks of life break bread together.” Other restaurants soon followed in Swedish locations: Gothenburg, Stockholm, and Uppsala. But it’s not until 2015 that the chef

left both continents for the exotic island of Bermuda. In May, Marcus’ unbolted its doors to the guests of the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club. n last month’s issue, we covered “Miami’s Masterful, Memorable RED, the Steakhouse”— one of the country’s top ten steakhouses according to Esquire, Playboy, and Food & Wine Magazine. We discussed RED’s Executive Chef Peter Vauthy. We discussed its location in the “iconic ‘South of Fifth’ neighborhood just a few blocks from the beach.” This month, we pick up where we left off, leading you to your night’s accommodations—just three blocks seaward—to the Marriott Stanton Miami Beach. On first glance, the hotel may seem a rem-

nant of long-ago art-deco architecture—symmetrical, geometric, vertical, the Miami Beach of the early 20th century—but don’t let the façade fool you. Phase Two, which is scheduled to finish by summer 2016, focuses on the public areas of the hotel: Its two lobbies, pools, outdoor terrace, spa, fitness center, and driveway. The reinvented Stanton will also feature three new food and beverage outlets as well as two new bars operated by Japanese vendor Plan Do See, not to mention a Mexican restaurant, a secret sushi restaurant with its own exclusive entrance, and much more. We don’t want to spoil the surprise, but one thing is certain: Phase Two will bring this cuisine collection into a new age. Even now, creativity is becoming a force of its own at 161 Ocean Drive. When Phase Two began at the beginning of this year, and large plywood walls concealed construction, the hotel team decided to spruce up the place in the style of nearby Wynwood— the art district located just across the bay where block-long graffiti masterpieces line the streets. The team called in local graffiti artists to participate in the rejuvenation process, and soon every bare spot was covered in

color. By the time construction moved onto the outdoor terrace, several artists joined together to orchestrate an entire outdoor mural exhibit, followed by a live show. Guests loved the murals so much that they asked for painting lessons. One graffiti artist, Atomik, stepped forward, and, just like that, Marriott visitors became his students. Guests still have the rare opportunity to (legally) vandalize public space, to leave their marks amid Miami’s chorus of voices. It goes without saying that the Stanton is replete with getaway essentials like spa services—everything from Swedish Massage to the Massage Meltdown to Romantic Couple’s Massage, the Water Lily Radiance Facial, and Nature’s Detox Wrap—and fitness equipment. But guests can also surf in the outdoor whirlpool, swim in either (or both) of two beach-view infinity pools, or head down to the shoreline for paddleboarding and jet skiing. The branzino is composed from a De Felice family recipe and is a fan-favorite among regulars at the restaurant. The spaghetti pomodoro and the fettucine are two pasta dishes that never disappoint. The new hot-spot has the ability to seat over 100 people, and is equipped with a lively bar, perfect for drinks and small plates—and people-watching, of course. Here, locals and tourists alike enjoy cocktails from Tutto’s redesigned drink menu, filled with Italian libations with a new twist. Their signature drink, Bicicletta, combines Apérol with a splash of white wine and soda to create a refreshing

The design of the restaurant is subtle, and specific to this location. Gabby Karan De Felice has a taste for design, and for this latest venture she collaborated with architect Francis D’Haene, of D’Apostrophe Design. The Tribeca location is filled with industrial textures that are offset with warm lighting and floral accents. The artwork hung throughout is by the late Stephen Weiss. The bar is made from pure Italian stone, and is placed near the entrance to immediately welcome diners. The dining room features a communal table as the centerpiece, ensuring a lively atmosphere. Chandeliers were custommade, hanging from high, vaulted ceilings. The lighting scheme promotes an intimate environment, and a touch of rustic Italy is added with the reclaimed wood floors. The food and atmosphere Tutto has to offer ensures a pure Italian charm with a chic, modern twist that is a welcome addition to one of Manhattan’s hippest neighborhoods.

Manhattan Moonshine Brings Un-Aged Whiskey Back to Prohibition-Era Roots By Ann Grenier

anhattan Moonshine, a revolutionary new premium un-aged whiskey, is making a splash in cocktail bars across New York City. Founded just nine months ago by William Kehler, Manhattan Moonshine aims to revive the quality and grandeur of Prohibition Era un-aged whiskey and bring it to modern Manhattan drinkers. A popular misconception is that moonshine is—and has always been—harsh tasting, low quality, and made in backwoods or bathtubs. In truth, during Prohibition, plenty of moonshine was actually produced in sophisticated distilleries that operated in secret, then distributed to upscale speakeasies across the country. Because consumers accepted the misperception, most modern day “moonshines” are packaged in mason jars or faux jug-style containers, embodying un-aged whiskey’s supposed backwoods origins. With Manhattan Moonshine, Kehler wants to show the world the other side of moonshine: An approachable, high quality, un-aged whiskey, born during the cocktail renaissance that was American Prohibition. Typically, moonshines are made following the steps of traditional barrel-aged whiskey recipes, but skip the final step of putting the whiskey into barrels. Manhattan Moonshine, on the other hand, is created from the outset to be an un-aged whiskey, meaning that its recipe and production process are specifically tailored to create a product that is complex, devoid of any of the harshness or grassy flavor that is typical of un-aged Whiskeys. To do this, William Kehler partnered with master distiller and author, Ian Smiley, considered to one of the foremost experts on moonshine. After a year of experimenting with recipes and production processes, Kehler and Smiley developed a unique grain bill featuring a combination of oats, rye, and spelt (an ancestral form of wheat) to create an un-aged whiskey that is smooth, and approachable, without the heavy barrel flavors that make aged whiskeys harder to mix. Because it has a smoothness reminiscent of an aged whiskey, but lacks aged whiskey’s

heavier barrel flavors, Manhattan Moonshine is a highly versatile spirit that can be used in an almost infinite variety of drinks, using flavors and ingredients that no aged whiskey can mix with. These range from traditional ingredients, such as grapefruit juice or tonic water, to more exotic ingredients like lavender, black walnut peel, or saffron. This versatility, similar to that of silver or white rum and blanco or silver tequila, allows Manhattan Moonshine to be the go-to whiskey for mixology.

After all, she’s a role model and a brand, and was named one of Google’s “Next Top Fitness Trainers.” But it was neither luck nor an accident that brought Russell to

I had the most amazing phys-ed teacher, and in 9th grade she said to me, ‘You know that in the U.S., there’s these things called scholarships, and if you work really hard and you keep your grades up and you run fast, you could get a full scholarship. They will pay you to go there and run USA track and field.’

I know that you were a serious runner, training for the Olympics, and basically the worst happened. How did your journey as an athlete begin? So there’s a charity that I love, it’s called Girls on the Run, and the whole premise is how giving girls the training to be able to run a race teaches you so much about life and how it can open up

Amanda Russell:

I would run in the snow, on my lunch hours, before school, after school. I was known as the crazy girl who was always running. But I wanted out of there so badly, and I felt like that was my ticket. I have the most amazing family and it’s a great hometown, but I knew there was something bigger out there. My

parents were saying, ‘Amanda, that’s great that want to go to University in the U.S., but we can’t help you. We can’t pay even if you have a 90% scholarship. It’s gotta be 100%,’ so I was only looking at full rides.

I will go there.’ I devised a plan to be able to do that. I didn’t have credit history so I couldn’t even get a cell phone or an apartment, so I was literally like alone in the world. There were some scary times.

PJ: So it was as much about getting away

PJ: It’s very brave.

as it was about the actual running?

AR: Yes, and by my senior year I was running times that were among some of the fastest in the U.S. for girls my age, and I became one of the top recruits. I took a scholarship and that was what changed everything. In the U.S., training is very different [from Canada]. Every coach has a different training philosophy— my coaches were known as kind of hammers, like, ‘train more, train more, run more.’ On my body type that didn’t really work well; it just kept breaking down. And they didn’t care about me qualifying and going to the Olympics; they cared about me performing for that team and making money. Before Olympic trials I had a team-sponsored race, and I was in so much pain. I couldn’t train, I was on so many painkillers and I was on crutches, and they basically played on all my weaknesses. At the end of the day it was like, ‘you’re afraid of failure, if you don’t do this you’re going to get dropped.’

PJ: So you kept going. And what happened to your body?

AR: I didn’t realize I had a stress fracture in my femur, which is almost unheard of. And it ended up cracking on that last race, when I decided to just go through with it. The surgeon that I saw was like, ‘I’ve seen tens of thousands of fractures and I’ve never seen one like this before.’ And so then that was like the end. PJ: You must have been devastated. AR: You go through an identity crisis. Because my whole life, I was running. That was everything—it was my ticket. And when it stopped, your sponsors drop you, my visa would expire—I couldn’t stay in the country. I had no family here. All I could think about was, ‘The worst has happened and now I’m going to have to go back to my hometown with my tail between my legs.’ And I thought, ‘Well, if I can’t go to the pinnacle of the athletic world, my other dream would be to go to the pinnacle of the corporate world, which is New York City.’ I had seen New York City in movies, and I was like ‘I don’t even care if I am homeless,

AR: Oh, it’s stupid. Brave/stupid [laughs]. Sometimes they go together.

PJ:

AR: So I moved to New York, found a few consulting firms, got all these rounds of interviews at one, and they hired me on the spot. Meanwhile, I had lost everything, body wise. I had to learn to walk again in the water. I got into non-impact stuff. It started with the pool, and then biking, and I joined a men’s bike racing team in Central Park, and it was amazing. These guys took me under their wing because I was the only girl who was there at 5:00 in the morning, rain or shine, and would bike 30 miles before 7 a.m. It turns out a lot of these guys are big wigs, like one of them is the chairman of JP Morgan and one of them was a big wig at the Met. I knew I wanted to start a business, and one of my new mentors was like, ‘You should do an MBA. It’s never a financially stupid decision, and it will give you a student visa.’ So I did an MBA and I was working in a restaurant, then signed with Wilhelmina and started modeling to pay my way through school. I also started pitching myself to every single editor and person on set, because at the same time I was doing these workout videos. I wanted to start a brand and the best way was through digital media. You can have nothing and start a business on the macro scale yourself. You need an audience, and how do you draw that audience, in today’s world without any capital? And that was YouTube; YouTube is free.

PJ: So you’re in school, modeling, and making workout videos at this point?

AR: Yes, and in my free time I’m also training everybody that I can, because I just love it. And I started hosting these boot camps on the West Side Highway for whoever would come, and they started getting packed. And then the founder of Zico Coconut Water came, and I ended up replacing Molly Sims as a spokesperson for Zico, and that’s when things really started to take off. Zico became

I started doing this YouTube stuff on a bigger scale, too; I wanted to use YouTube as a driver to something that’s monetized. I partnered with Trium Entertainment. Mark Koops is behind that—he’s the creator of The Biggest Loser. To this day he’s a really good mentor and friend of mine, and supporter. It was great, but then I just decided to hire my own employees and start doing production on my own. And because I had this niche in producing online content, I started doing a lot of consulting work, building online branding models for other companies and helping them build and grow.

AR: I’ve had a lot of those kinds of moments. There are certain times where I’m like, ‘how did I get here? How did this happen? From this small town that nobody leaves, to sitting at dinner with Donald Trump—how did I get here?’

AR: I think it’s going to continue to expand

PJ: So are there other fitness methods out there that you can describe as similar to yours?

AR: Barry’s Bootcamp—who are actually good friends of mine—is the closest, and we’ve done a lot of collaborations. They’ve done my videos, and I have done pop-up teaching for them. Actually I just did one yesterday at their studio right around the corner [in East Hampton].

PJ: Recently you’ve been shooting videos PJ: Do you have advice for anyone says, ‘I really at the YouTube studios. So they’re having their biggest personalities, the people with the most subscribers, come and shoot there?

AR:There’s a training as a YouTube partner. You go through all the training there, but they’re like like, ‘We work for you. We work for our biggest creators.’ So they make you feel like you’ve got these top production resources, editors, props, and people, everything at your fingertips.

PJ: While you’re there, and you’re a YouTube partner, are you having moments where you’re like ‘I can’t believe I’m here right now and this is happening,’ given where

AR:Oh yeah. I’m actually doing that right now with 13 editors in New York. Part of what I am doing is training them mentally, and I’m getting e-mails like, ‘Oh my gosh, I ran my first hill,’ or ‘I finished three miles in under 45 minutes.’ But advice wise—everybody’s got that inner fire inside of them. You learn about yourself, about what motivates you personally, and it’s a trial and error. And you have to figure out what it is for you and go with what drives you.

PJ: So where do you see the near future and the

Fitness is about more than exercise. It develops a certain confidence and it develops a ticket out. It gives you a work ethic. It gives you discipline. What I’ve done with fitness is try to package typical exercises in a way that draws people in. Once they’re in, it’s going to forever change their lives. They feel a different confidence. They achieve things that they thought they never would have done. It’s amazing to watch the transformation of people, and to give that to other people—I feel like that’s why I was put here and that’s why my Olympic career didn’t work out.

PJ: A lot of people in your position could have just gone and quit everything, and instead you chose to go in the opposite direction.

AR: Right. And that’s what my message is trying to get across. You have to shift your attitude. There’s always a way to create something positive. And even if you can’t see it at the time, you look back and think ‘Wow, thank God that crappy thing happened because it led to all this.’

ne of my biggest passions, mainly because it has made such an enormous, positive impact in my life, is helping people get great sleep. Last month, Glen Tobias, RD wrote a great article on the importance of sleep and how it affects your weight. But in addition to negatively affecting your weight, poor sleep can have a detrimental effect on your health. Most of us know by now that we need a minimum of seven to eight hours of sleep, but what most don’t realize is that it’s not just the quantity that’s important. It’s the quality. If you don’t get quality sleep, then you can sleep for 12 hours and still wake up feeling exhausted. Sleep is our body’s way of healing, balancing, and restoring itself. When you don’t get quality sleep, your body can’t function at its optimum. While you’re young, you may not feel it as

much, but as you age you may start “not feeling like your old self”. You may not have as much energy as you used to. You may need to exercise to feel good, since without quality sleep that may be the only way your body produces serotonin—the feel good hormone. It starts out with you becoming a little forgetful and scattered, but as the lack of quality sleep takes its toll, it can often turn into anxiety and depression. To try to get back to the real you, you may see every specialist under the sun to get some normalcy back. Every doctor you see will tell you to get more sleep, but no one will actually test you to see that the sleep you are getting is actually helping. The scariest part of undiagnosed apnea is its direct correlation to heart disease and stroke. One of my close friends just had a heart attack, and he was in his mid-forties with no history of any heart problems, high blood pressure, or cholesterol. No one knew exactly

what caused it, as he had no blockages, but the only explanation his doctor gave was increased stress on the heart from sleep apnea. Our bodies are amazing in that we are able to adapt to almost anything. We will live with chronic exhaustion and think it’s the norm because that’s all we know. Sophia Ruan Gushée Shares the A to Z of Detoxing By Ann Grenier Sophia Ruan Gushée, a former investment management professional and now a mother of three, spent five years researching her family’s toxic exposures from common household products. ichelle Javian beat the odds and turned an emotional point in her life into something wonderful and compassionate. In 2008, Michelle lost her father after a heart transplant during his long battle with heart disease. In return, Michelle wanted to help families like her own.

In April of 2009, NYC resident Michelle Javian founded her organization Harboring Hearts with co-founder, Yuki Kotani. Michelle and Yuki met through mutual friends, but had something in common far past their similar interests. Both Kotani and Javian’s fathers were experiencing heart troubles and would be receiving heart transplants around the same time in the same hospital. Fortunately, Kotani’s father survived a heart attack, and is now an LVAD and heart transplant recipient. As for Michelle, the loss of her father led her down an inspiring road. She and Yuki started an organization that provides support to families with loved ones who have heart diseases. Harboring Hearts offers three main types of support:

Fall Benefit Since their start in 2009, Harboring Hearts has helped more than 3,000 individuals. This year, they tripled the number of grants in their emergency program. Michelle says they want to expand nationwide and eventually worldwide. Most recently, they expanded their organization to California. On September 29th, Harboring Hearts will host their annual fall benefit. This year’s honorees are Constance Milstein, principal and co-founder of Ogden CAP Properties, and Hiroo Takayama, MD, PhD, assistant professor of surgery, cardiac surgery,

surgical director, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.

ow that summer is sadly coming to a close, it’s time to jumpstart your NYC private schools application process. Whether your child is starting school for the first time, or applying to a different school, here are some tips to make sure the process goes smoothly. These tours give parents the opportunity to see many schools, with many different approaches to learning. You’ll be able to rule out certain schools, while falling in love with others. There is no better way to get a feel for a school than to actually be inside of it, seeing its teachers and students in action. We like to tell our clients, “If it feels right and you can envision your child there, it is a good option.”

Remember to be polite and be genuinely excited to be there. This is a great opportunity to start acquiring knowledge for your child’s future. It is also the day the school community will be meeting you and gaining a window into your family for the first time. •

School tours are also a time when the admissions staff is meeting you for the first time—and first impressions stick! •

Schools are small communities where everyone is valued equally. This means everyone; from the security guard at the front door, to the parent giving the tour and the admissions staff members, all must be treated with kindness and respect. Even if you are having a bad

Dress appropriately for the tour. It is important to look presentable and dress as if you are taking this tour seriously. Best rule of thumb: If you don’t know anything about the school, think business casual. Also, wear comfortable shoes. Remember it is a tour and you will be walking, climbing stairs, and standing. We are asked by our clients all the time if they should carry certain pocketbooks— this is not a joke. Please be yourself on a tour, carry the bag you like, but remember less is more until you really get to know a school. School tours are a great time to gather information and really learn about a school. Taking notes to help you

remember some things is a good idea, so bring a small pad and pen—but keep your phone away. Turn off all phones and keep them out of sight the entire time you are present in the school. If this is impossible, put your phone on vibrate and only answer for a true emergency. Remember, schools are a small community; a parent tour guide who thinks you are rude is just as bad as the director of admissions thinking the same. •

Ask genuine questions if you have them. Keep your questions to a minimum, however, and know that you will have time to get into your personal questions later, during your interview. School tours are a time to learn, and then go home and reflect on what you have learned. They are not the time to have a oneon-one interview with the tour guide.

Perhaps most importantly, keep an open mind toward all schools and take in all the information you can. You might be surprised at the type of school that speaks to you and your family!

How can New Yorkers use flowers to bring art into their living rooms? Do you have any special tips for our readers?

CH:

I have been especially influenced by German designer Gregor Lersch, who incorporates sculpture and iron work into his designs and uses readily-available materials

like floral wire to create unique, artful structures with flowers. I have also been very inspired by Laura Dowling, the former White House florist, whose use of color in floral design is second to none. For years, she led the design of the White House Christmas decorations, which included intricate sugar sculptures, largescale installations, and a robotic Bo and Sunny. I also draw inspiration from Fusion Flowers magazine and Pim van den Akker’s Flower Factor. My tip to readers would be to ‘think outside the vase’—use nontraditional materials like wire, wax, and wood to artfully arrange flowers.

OG:

For those wishing to send colorful blooms to someone special this fall, which bouquet would you recommend and why?

CH: I would recommend our forthcoming seasonal bouquet, which will be available starting in late September, that features ornamental kale, fragrant eucalyptus, yellow solidago aster, sunflowers, and other stems. It’s an elegant nod to autumn’s yellows and oranges, with a faint hint of crisp eucalyptus that adds ambience to any space.

When you’re photographing one of the stars of the hottest show on Broadway, and it’s for the cover of your Fall Arts issue, location is everything. We needed something spectacular. We find that first time visitors to The Charles are also struck by the tremendous volume of light and air in each of the homes, which is a wonderful achievement on the part of the designers.

Resident: Is there anything else about The Charles that makes it stand out from other luxury townhouse residences on the Upper East Side?

Jason Karadus: The Charles has broken price records for properties east of Third Avenue. Most are forgettable, but some films stand the test of time, and are beloved by generations, going down in cinema history. These are the movies we watch again and again. To determine the 100 best American movies of all time, BBC’s Deputy Culture Editor, Christian Blauvult, reached out to 62 film critics from around the world and polled each of them for their favorites, creating a list of the 100 best.
