RM: Dr. Johnson, your journey from Nigeria to becoming a distinguished figure in neuroscience and psychiatry is remarkable. Could you share how this journey began? Dr. Johnson: My journey started in Nigeria, where I was born. At 15, I moved to England with my family, where I was homeschooled before attending university. My pursuit of knowledge led me to earn degrees in medicine, neurology, and computational mathematics. My academic journey was unconventional, starting university at just 16. RM: What sparked your interest in psychiatry and neuropharmacology? Dr. Johnson: Curiosity was my primary motivator. Having been homeschooled, I had a fear of missing out on knowledge, which drove me to explore extensively. This curiosity led me to psychiatry and later to a scholarship in psychopharmacology at Oxford University. RM: You've achieved significant career milestones, including global patents. Could you

22 | resident.com

discuss these achievements? Dr. Johnson: Yes, my work focuses on the brain, particularly the serotonin system and its role in mental disorders. I'm known for my research on brain genes and their contribution to addiction. A notable accomplishment is developing a successful clinical treatment approach for alcohol use disorder. RM: How did your unique academic journey shape your personal and professional life? Dr. Johnson: Starting university at a young age was challenging. It limited my social activities, making me focus more on studies and research. This focus benefited my career, but it also presented unique personal challenges. RM: What motivated you to start Adial Pharmaceuticals in your kitchen with just $450? Dr. Johnson: The motivation was to translate my research into practical applications. I wanted to see the direct impact of my work on individuals, which is not always visible in

academic research. The growth and NASDAQ listing of the company were beyond my initial expectations. RM: What advice would you give to young scientists and entrepreneurs inspired by your journey? Dr. Johnson: Stay curious and never stop learning. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Remember, it's not just about acquiring knowledge; it's about applying it to make a tangible difference in the world. RM: Can you share how your upbringing in Nigeria influenced your perspective in psychiatry and neuroscience? Dr. Johnson: Growing up in Nigeria instilled in me a strong sense of community and understanding of diverse cultures. This background has been fundamental in my approach to mental health, allowing me to appreciate the different ways mental health issues manifest and are treated across cultures.

RM: Were there any significant obstacles you had to overcome in your career? Dr. Johnson: Definitely. As a young, foreigntrained scientist, navigating the academic and professional world presented challenges. I faced moments of self-doubt and cultural barriers, teaching me resilience and the importance of adaptability. RM: Beyond your scientific achievements, what personal passions or hobbies do you enjoy? Dr. Johnson: I am passionate about music and the arts, which have been sources of relaxation and inspiration. I also enjoy mentoring young scientists, helping them find their path in this challenging field. RM: What are the emerging trends or future directions in psychiatry and neuroscience? Dr. Johnson: The integration of technology, like AI and machine learning, in understanding and treating mental health is significant. Also, there's a growing focus on personalized medicine – tailoring treatments to individual genetic profiles. RM: Looking back at your career, what would you say is your most fulfilling accomplishment? Dr. Johnson: Beyond the scientific discoveries and patents, the most fulfilling aspect has been seeing the real-world impact of my work. THE ART OF TRANSFORMATION A Conversation with Gabriel Feitosa, the Pop Art Dog Grooming Virtuoso By Brandon Travin

In this interview, we discuss Gabriel's journey and insights, offering inspiration and advice for aspiring entrepreneurs and dog lovers alike. In the world of creative dog grooming, few names resonate as vividly as Gabriel Feitosa. Best known for his innovative Pop Art Dog Grooming, Gabriel has revolutionized the way we perceive pet grooming, transforming it into an art form. From his early days in São Paulo to his now celebrated salon, Gabriel's journey is a testament to his artistic vision and entrepreneurial spirit. In this exclusive interview, we delve into the colorful world of Gabriel Feitosa, uncovering the inspirations, challenges, and aspirations that drive this extraordinary Entrepreneur and dog grooming artist.

Gabriel Feitosa: Dog grooming is a challenging craft. Each breed has a specific coat type and shape to consider. Balancing the artistic aspect with understanding each dog's personality and needs was key. It was a journey of patience and emotional balance, as well as honing my skills with the scissors.

Resident Magazine: Gabriel, your journey began with simple trips to the local groomer in São Paulo. Can you share a moment from these early experiences that particularly inspired you to pursue dog grooming as a career?

Gabriel Feitosa: The biggest challenge was learning how to run a business in the U.S., which was very different from Brazil. I had to understand licensing, forming a team, and creating a demand for our services. It was about promoting our work and finding our clientele, even if they were far away.

Gabriel Feitosa: Absolutely. I started grooming when I was 12. Initially, I thought I'd be an artist. I loved drawing and painting, but grooming dogs was like sculpting. I remember being drawn to the artistry of dog shows and the meticulous care needed for those fancy visions. It was a defining moment when I realized this could be my canvas. RM: In transitioning from traditional grooming to creating elaborate designs, what challenges did you face in developing your unique style and technique?

30 | resident.com

RM: You've mentioned the difficulties of balancing artistic pursuits with business responsibilities. What specific challenges did you face in this balance, and how did you overcome them?

RM: Your salon's work brings immense joy to pet owners. Could you share a particularly memorable reaction or story from a client whose pet you transformed? Gabriel Feitosa: There are many touching stories. Once, a client from Texas cried seeing her blue-dyed dog. Another time, a couple from Phoenix had their dog groomed like a tiger for their wedding. Seeing the impact of our work on people's lives is incredibly rewarding.

RM: Given the use of vegan, pet-friendly dyes in your work, how do you ensure the safety and comfort of the pets during their makeovers? Gabriel Feitosa: All the dyes we use are developed for pets and are nontoxic. We use brands that conduct extensive safety studies. So far, we've had no allergic reactions. The dyes work as a layer on the hair, ensuring the pet's comfort throughout the process. RM: Your social media success has been astounding. How has this online presence influenced the way you operate your business and interact with your clientele? Gabriel Feitosa: Social media, especially TikTok, has been instrumental. It's fun for clients to see their dogs become celebrities. My goal is to showcase the artistic and technical side of dog grooming to a broader audience, changing perceptions about our industry. RM: The pandemic posed significant challenges for many businesses. How did you adapt your business model during this time to ensure continuity and safety? Gabriel Feitosa: COVID-19 was initially a scare, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for us. Pet owners spent more time with their pets, leading to an increased demand for grooming. We adapted by implementing safety measures like picking up dogs outside and following necessary precautions. RM: Looking ahead, you've expressed a desire to open a second salon and host your own TV show. What are your visions for these ventures, and how do they align with your overall career goals? Gabriel Feitosa: I am working on TV projects and grooming products, including an online course. My vision is to educate groomers and expand our artistic grooming services. These ventures align with my goal of moving the needle in the dog grooming industry and sharing our craft with a wider audience. RM: What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs, especially those looking to blend their artistic passion with business acumen? Gabriel Feitosa: It's about taking calculated risks and following your vision. If you can visualize your goals, put them on paper, and then be ready to take a leap. You'll never be 100% prepared, so it's about jumping in and figuring things out along the way. RM: You've achieved considerable success in a unique field. How do you define success, and what advice would you give others seeking to follow their passion? Gabriel Feitosa: Success is a balance between personal satisfaction, financial stability, and time. It's about living comfortably, following your passion, and having time to appreciate life and spend with family. My advice is to follow your dreams and keep pushing for what you believe in.

Dr. Perricone: In my early research, I found that inflammation, often invisible and subclinical, is a key factor in aging. Inflammation at the cellular level leads to the deterioration of cells and mitochondria, contributing to aging symptoms in the skin and brain, leading to visible signs of aging and cognitive decline. This connection between inflammation and aging became the cornerstone of my research and subsequently my approach. The key lies in understanding how RM: You advocate for a diet rich in antiinflammatory foods. What are the top three nutritional changes you recommend for immediate impact on one's skin health and cognitive function? Dr. Perricone: I strongly advocate for an antiinflammatory diet. The top three nutritional changes I recommend are increasing the intake of wild Alaskan salmon for its omega-3 fatty acids and high quality protein, consuming green salads rich in antioxidants, and adding berries to your diet for their anti-inflammatory properties. RM: Among the variety of supplements you recommend, which do you consider most

critical for someone just beginning to address inflammation, and why? Dr. Perricone: When it comes to supplements, I find that starting with Vitamin C is crucial. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties make it a cornerstone for anyone beginning to address inflammation in their body. I also recommend alpha lipoic acid which is called “the universal antioxidant” because it is both fat- and water-solubleAlpha lipoic acid boosts energy production in your cells; just as it helps the mitochondria change food to energy. As you know, the higher the energy level in the cell, the more youthful you remain. RM: Can you discuss how your topical skincare products are designed to combat inflammation and what sets them apart from other anti-aging skincare products? Dr. Perricone: The skincare products I advocate are uniquely formulated to combat inflammation. They contain potent ingredients like Vitamin C Ester and DMAE, which not only improve the skin's appearance but also target the underlying inflammation, setting them apart from other products. RM: How do you propose integrating stress management, exercise, and sleep optimization into a busy lifestyle, particularly for women juggling multiple responsibilities? Dr. Perricone: I advocate for a holistic approach. Integrating stress management, exercise, and sleep optimization into a busy lifestyle, especially for women juggling multiple responsibilities, is essential. I suggest manageable exercise routines, adopting an anti-inflammatory diet, and exploring the benefits of hydrogen water to improve overall well-being. RM: Your book links inflammation to diseases like heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's. Could you share some preventive strategies to combat these conditions? Dr. Perricone: To combat chronic diseases associated with inflammation, such as heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's, a proactive approach involving lifestyle and dietary changes is key. This includes adhering to an anti-inflammatory diet and making conscious lifestyle choices to mitigate risk factors.

RM: What is your personal philosophy or routine for aging gracefully, and how has it evolved over the years? Dr. Perricone: My personal routine for aging gracefully revolves around a disciplined lifestyle. This includes following a strict anti-inflammatory diet, maintaining regular exercise, and focusing on mental wellness, which is crucial for long-term health and vitality. RM: Throughout your research and experience, what were some of the biggest challenges you faced in developing your anti-inflammatory approach, and what breakthrough moments were pivotal? Could you tell us more about your latest research and product, Hydrogen Water? Dr. Perricone: Developing the anti-inflammatory approach was challenging, especially in convincing the medical community of the inflammation-aging link. A significant breakthrough was realizing the impact of certain diets and skincare ingredients on reducing inflammation. RM: How has your understanding of aging and health changed over the years, and what new insights have you gained since writing "Ageless Face, Ageless Mind” and your last book Forever Young? Are you working on a new book? Dr. Perricone: My understanding of aging and health has evolved to include the importance of holistic well-being. My current focus is on the benefits of hydrogen water for reducing inflammation. I'm also working on a new book to share these expanded insights. I hope my research and insights provide a pathway for people to age gracefully and maintain their health. It's been a fulfilling journey to explore and share the profound effects of managing inflammation on overall well-being.

Miami Glows in the Afterlight of

FAITH CONNEXION'S FASHION EXTRAVAGANZA By Carece Slaughter Photos by Bridgett Ezzard @bephoto

FASHION | RESIDENT Miami's Mana Wynwood Convention Center still buzzed with the electric energy of a bygone fashion revolution. Just days ago, Faith Connexion, the brainchild of Miami native Maria Buccellati, defied the industry's rigid schedule, staging a fall 2023 runway show after their spring 2024 Paris debut. This wasn't just a runway romp; it was a love letter to Miami, a declaration of the city's burgeoning fashion prowess, and a bold experiment in the future of fashion itself. Buccellati, a woman with Miami sand in her veins and Parisian sophistication in her soul, orchestrated this audacious affair. Driven by the conviction that fluidity is a new power, she ripped up the traditional fashion calendar, embracing a "see-now, buy-now" format that blurred the lines between digital immediacy and the thrill of live experiences. Miami was just the first chapter in this global story, with similar events planned for LA, Seoul, and even Doha, cementing Faith Connexion's status as a citizen of the world. But Faith Connexion wasn't the only star of the show. Buccellati's inclusive spirit shone through a series of collaborations with guest designers, from the established Parisian label YLLVV16 to the rising Miami talent of Fortuna. This eclectic mix mirrored Miami's own vibrant tapestry, a city where cultures and influences swirl into a breathtaking kaleidoscope. And Miami's fashion ambitions stretched far beyond the runway. Mana Fashion Services, the event's visionary organizers, are weaving a sustainable fashion utopia in the heart of the city. Their pop-up, nestled alongside the Faith Connexion extravaganza, showcased 120 ethical brands, including a dedicated space for Ukrainian designers. This commitment to sustainability and inclusivity resonated like a bassline throughout the weekend, promising a future where fashion and responsibility dance hand-in-hand.

"It's not about the old fashion capitals anymore," Buccellati declared, her voice echoing with the city's infectious energy. "Miami became the hub of the future after COVID[-19]." This sentiment was echoed by Mana Fashion Services' creative director Aleksandra Sivokoneva, who envisions Miami as a breeding ground for groundbreaking experiences, from upcycled art installations to clothing swaps benefiting local charities. Faith Connexion's Miami extravaganza wasn't just a fashion show; it was a cultural earthquake. It was a vibrant tapestry woven with global threads, fueled by a passion for sustainability and a deep love for Miami's electrifying spirit. This was Miami's moment, and Faith Connexion led the charge, strutting into the future with audacity, grace, and a whole lot of sunshine. The afterglow of this fashion revolution will continue to illuminate Miami's streets, a testament to a city where fashion, inclusivity, and a fierce spirit collide in a breathtaking kaleidoscope.

Agent Spotlight

BOCA RATON’S AARON BUCHBINDER By Brandon Travin

Growing up in Boca Raton, top agent Aaron Buchbinder knows the community as only locals do. As a founding agent of Compass in Boca Raton, Buchbinder is passionate about helping families find the same idyllic lifestyle that he has known his whole life. Relying on decades of neighborhood knowledge and connections to deliver a uniquely personalized real estate approach, Buchbinder expertly navigates the market to put his clients in their dream homes and achieve his sellers’ property goals. We sat down with Aaron to discuss the hot South Florida market, the appeal of his hometown, and his favorite places to visit.

You’re one of the founding agents of Compass in Boca Raton and grew up there. What makes the area so special? Being a founding agent in my hometown is extremely special for me, as it allows me to live, breathe, and sell what I know best. Boca Raton is a hidden jewel and the mecca of all suburbs because of our prime location between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, grade A schools, country clubs, downtown life, and immaculate beaches. Having watched the community evolve over the years, you certainly have deep market experience. What else makes you the expert on all things Boca Raton? I have a deep-rooted understanding of the local history and trends. By being able to share a great deal about the different areas, school

62 | resident.com

systems, lifestyles, day-to-day activities, best spots, and the to-do’s and not to-do’s gives buyers confidence when making one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives. Florida has seen a huge surge of interest since the pandemic, with buyers pouring in from all across the United States. What is drawing everyone to the Sunshine State, specifically South Florida? Historically, the two most obvious draws to South Florida are its weather and tax benefits, but I think what more and more people are starting to realize is the incredible quality of life we have down here. If you are a young family, Boca Raton is extremely popular for our grade A public schools and amazing private schools. With the abundance of country clubs, social communities, good restaurants, a vibrant downtown area, luxury condos and waterfront

living opportunities, the luxury lifestyle that current home prices afford is hard to beat. What is your number-one tip for buyers and sellers as we move toward the end of 2023? Consult with local realtors who are engrained in the community and truly understand the nuances of the different neighborhoods and area trends. There are so many lifestyles to choose from, and it's important that you work with a broker who understands exactly what you are looking for. If you're selling, you have to keep in mind that there are seasons for buyers, and it's never too early to plan your exit strategy. Sellers who consult brokers early on to help plan out their future typically have the most success as they are better-positioned to sell into strength in the market.

Photos by Mary Beth Koeth

How does selling the South Florida lifestyle today differ from when you first entered the industry? The market is much more competitive because of advancements in technology, people in the industry, and lack of inventory. Competition is always present in a thriving market, and this is where the best of the best really shine. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career? In order to do more you have to learn what business to give up. When you first get started, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s most important and chase every deal alone. Sometimes what the client wants is out of your area of expertise or you simply can’t service the client all by yourself. You have to learn the importance of ROI and when it makes sense to partner on deals so you can do more while providing your client with expert-quality service. The sooner you realize this, the better. What is one of your most memorable deals? A condo I sold at Mizner Grand in Boca Raton, it was one of my first million-dollar-plus listings. I found the buyer by myself and worked both sides of the transaction. This cemented my career in real estate both personally and professionally, and is a memorable moment as a time that I learned a lot in a short period of time and succeeded. If you weren’t in real estate, what would you be doing? I have been in the industry full-time for about 10 years now. Believe it or not, I was in the midst of pursuing a career in medicine before real estate. If I stuck with it, I could very well be finishing my residency and starting my years in practice right now. Share your slice of heaven in Boca Raton, describe a perfect day. My perfect day starts by waking up with my wife, rounding up our kids, and driving to one of our favorite breakfast spots - Palm Beach Bagel or Way Beyond Bagels - to grab a bagel and coffee, and then cruise over to our club, The Boca Raton, for a day of R&R at the pool.

This exciting venture, brought to life by the grandsons of the esteemed Mexican Chef Carmen "Titita" Ramirez Degollado, pays tribute to their grandmother's legacy and the rich culinary traditions of Mexico. The Story Behind Casa Carmen Casa Carmen, a name that resonates with the love and respect for Chef Titita's culinary journey, has its roots in the famous El Bajío restaurants in Mexico City. UNWINDING IN PARADISE A Wellness Retreat at W Fort Lauderdale By BRANDON TRAVIN

Exploring the Wellness Retreat at W Fort Lauderdale

I recently had the opportunity to attend a wellness and health retreat at W Fort Lauderdale in Florida. If you're seeking a retreat that emphasizes self-improvement and provides a fantastic environment, then W Fort Lauderdale is worth considering. Allow me to elaborate. The hotel is not only well situated on the beach with direct access and chair service, but it also boasts an on-site gym and spa, along with a variety of activities in the vicinity. These facilities make the hotel an ideal choice for a wellness and healthoriented getaway. To start the journey, we assembled in the suite on the 24th floor, which is the highest level in the hotel. This particular suite is absolutely stunning, featuring a large balcony that encircles the entire space, perfect for hosting gatherings. The suite provides a remarkable amount of room thanks to its open layout. Dinner at Steak 954 After indulging in champagne in the hospitality suite, we proceeded to have dinner at the hotel's steak restaurant, Steak 954. Our dining experience was a delectable five-course meal that started with outstanding popovers and a delightful tuna crunch. Following these appetizers, we savored dishes such as lobster, flavorful potatoes, tuna tartare, American Wagyu burgers, and, of course, steak, among many others.

72 | resident.com

For dessert, we relished a chocolate souffle, which was highly favored by one of my colleagues, as well as a chocolate ganache cake that was my personal favorite due to its rich melted chocolate paired with delicious vanilla ice cream. Additionally, we also indulged in a heavenly cheesecake, which was also well-liked by everyone.

waterfront. The panoramic views of the water and the city were astonishing. The balcony had a couch and chairs, which allowed us to fully enjoy the magnificent scenery. The bed was placed in front of the window, offering a beautiful view to wake up to and exceptional comfort. It was an amazing room and a very pleasant stay!

In general, the meal was extremely tasty, complemented by excellent wine, and we greatly appreciated the atmosphere, company, service, and cuisine at Steak 954. The popovers were especially remarkable and continued to be a point of conversation the next day because of their outstanding flavor.

The next day, we hopped in an Uber and arrived at JB&C in just 5 minutes. This hidden gem, situated close to the hotel, delighted us with its selection of healthy smoothies, juices, acai bowls, and a delightful ambiance. It was an ideal way to begin our wellness journey. Palm Reading

After our morning meal, we headed to our first activity: getting our palms read. The palm reading took place at Astrology Crystal Visions, a

palm reading studio that has been passed down through generations within a family. It was truly an incredible experience. Each of us was paired with either the mother or the daughter, and we all walked away feeling that their insights were remarkably accurate and resonated with each of us individually. One of my companions was particularly surprised by how they discerned that her partner was of a different race, and I definitely felt that they understood me, with their predictions hitting close to home. Our discussion revolved around travel, writing, and achieving success. Lunch At Sobe Vegan After a very successful palm-reading that left me better than I was before, we headed back to the hotel before lunch. This is at SoBe Vegan which is right outside the hotel which makes it a perfect spot for lunch.

After a very nice lunch where we all enjoyed our food and the atmosphere outside with the beautiful weather we took our bikes and went on a bike ride. Bike Ride W Fort Lauderdale provides free use of delightful bicycles for up to 2 hours, a great perk given the hotel's waterfront setting and the presence of bike lanes for a scenic ride. We took the bikes to Park & Ocean, enjoying a picturesque ride along the water. Once at the park, our PR leader Liz surprised us with a lovely spot for drinks, relaxation, and complete tranquility. After enjoying some beers and drinks at a scenic location, we grabbed our bikes and cycled around the park, which proved to be the perfect distance. As we pedaled along, we were treated to the sight of multi-million dollar homes, luxurious yachts, and the breathtaking intercoastal on our right-hand side. It was a delightful bike ride through the park, and we relished each other's company as we leisurely made our way through. After leaving the park, we cycled back on the designated bike paths and returned to our hotel in time for dinner. Dinner at The House on the River The riverside property in the heart of Fort Lauderdale offers a unique experience right by the water in the Riviera. The surrounding town is filled with a variety of bars and restaurants offering diverse cuisines such as Cuban, Mexican, and Italian. I highly recommend visiting the Riviera for a day or night out as it is easily walkable and offers plenty of activities. The restaurant itself, originally built as a house in 1903, is now a unique waterfront dining establishment serving delicious food. I personally enjoyed the shrimp and crab squid ink tagliatelle. The atmosphere, along with great table, wine, cocktails, and food, made for a delightful dining experience. After dinner, we strolled around the Riviera, enjoying the beautiful night before taking a short Uber ride back to the hotel.

Sound and Meditation Healing The third and final day was truly remarkable. It began with a session of sound and meditation at EWOW with Le Sound temple, which was absolutely incredible. We were on the top floor once again, with doors open to a view of the water. The session featured gongs, bowls, and more, creating powerful vibrations that elevated our spirits, dispelling negative thoughts and guiding us towards positive, inspiring actions for self-improvement. This was a deeply gratifying experience for me, one that I would gladly repeat. My colleagues had similar experiences, with some witnessing vibrant colors, each carrying its own unique inspirational message, and others envisioning themselves in a rainforest surrounded by beautiful waterfalls. Overall, the session was both relaxing and beneficial for the mind. I also had the oppor-

Pool Day After our soothing sound therapy session, we headed to the pool deck for a delightful breakfast and refreshing mojitos to start our day by the pool. The breakfast was wonderful and made us feel like we were on an amazing vacation. We savored a variety of delicious foods including French toast, eggs, bacon, muffins, potatoes, and sausage, creating a fantastic breakfast experience at

W in Fort Lauderdale. Following breakfast, we relaxed on the lounge chairs to enjoy the day. The pool at W Fort Lauderdale is amazing. Situated on the 5th floor, it provides breathtaking views of the beach and the city. The pool is conveniently located, surrounded by seating, and offers food and table service, along with a fantastic bar. I spent the day at the pool and bar area, savoring mojitos and a delicious chicken sandwich. It was a fantastic day at the pool, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great time. Libations After the yoga class, we relaxed with cocktails and dinner on the hotel's fourth floor, where other guests also indulged in dining, drinks, and watching football. Additionally, there were palm reading sessions, makeup artists, and various other activity stations for guests to enjoy. The ambiance was cozy, with guests lounging on couches and chairs, savoring each other's company, food, and drinks. I particularly relished a margherita and a highly recommended lobster roll. The dinner and drinks at the hotel's lounge served as our goodbye, where we wished each other well and promised to keep in touch. Liz organized the trip, which was really enjoyable and left us all feeling refreshed. The hotel's location by the ocean, along with plenty of things to do, places to eat, and nearby towns, made for an amazing weekend. With the ocean in sight and pleasant weather, we were treated to a yoga class led by experienced instructors. This session was distinctive as it was conducted in silence, with participants wearing headphones to receive instructions accompanied by soothing music and sounds. This setup fostered a serene and joyful atmosphere, resulting in a deeply relaxing yoga experience.

Schenck, was a musician and fiercely dedicated music-education pioneer who founded MSM in 1918 as a community music school and oversaw its evolution into one of the world’s most important independent music conservatories. I believe she would recognize a kindred spirit in Chloe and be extremely pleased that this inaugural award is being granted to such an extraordinary talent and advocate.” The December Gala began with a cocktail reception in the MSM Peter Jay Sharp President’s Residence preceding a performance by the MSM Precollege Philharmonic Orchestra in Neidorff-Karpati Hall, which was followed by a seated dinner and award presentation (featuring additional performances) at neighboring UTS’s St. James Chapel. “It is such a supreme honor to be part of this important Gala event at my alma mater and to be the recipient of the inaugural Janet Daniels Schenck Award,” says Gala honoree Chloe Flower. “My musical foundation and my strong belief in music education were forged at this world-class institution. This annual event celebrates the diverse cultures in New York City and honors exceptional women whose courage and leadership have transformed their local communities for women and families. An inspiring evening for conversation, connections, and action, the event was aptly held on National Philanthropy Day® (NPD), which is one day set aside each year for the purpose of recognizing the great contribution philanthropy makes to our society and to honor individuals, businesses and support organizations that are active in the philanthropic community. From Latin and Greek, philanthropy means “the love of humankind.” That love and inspiration was palpable in the room last night, where over 150 guests joined us to honor and support these incredible leaders. It was a Neighborhood Dinner that had a strong feeling of warmth and community. There was an embrace of everyone, inspiring honorees and their speeches, delicious food provided by a local, women-owned catering company, and a beautiful performance by the Bangladesh Academy of Fine Arts. The New York Women's Foundation is a voice for women and gender-expansive people and a force for change. The Foundation's mission is to create an equitable and just future for women and families. It achieves this goal by uniting cross-cultural and community alliances that ignite action. DOCUMENTARY FIGHT FOR UKRAINE: 12 WOMEN’S WAR BY ELYSIAN’S KAREN FLOYD GARNERS FILM FESTIVAL AWARDS By Lillian Langtry Fight for Ukraine: 12 Women’s War, is a new 81-minute documentary which was the result of a dozen in-person interviews ELYSIAN Publisher Karen Floyd conducted in Ukraine during 2023. Fight for Ukraine has been awarded Outstanding Excellence in the Documentaries Without Borders International Film Festival; Honorable Mention in the Heart of Europe International Season Film Festival; and was named an official selection in the International New York Film Festival and ETHOS Film Awards. In addition, the documentary premiered as an opening night screening at the 14th annual Awareness Film Festival, which spotlights films that make a difference in Los Angeles, California. ELYSIAN an international luxury lifestyle brand created to inspire and reflect the interests of women, produced Fight for Ukraine because women inspire us in the war zone as much as they do in a board room. The film tells the stories of 12 Ukrainian women from all walks of life who maintain their humanity in the face of the horror and tragedy of war. “ELYSIAN’s mantra is ‘Women Inspiring Woman’ … and we do that through our stories,” said Floyd, who served as the film’s director and executive producer. “The stories of these twelve women are nothing short of incredible. From safehouses near the front lines to the country’s Supreme Court, these women form the backbone of Ukraine, never breaking, always persevering… and they will carry the trauma from this for the rest of their lives.” Fight for Ukraine: 12 Women’s War is the latest in a growing number of short- and longform films produced as part of the ELYSIAN 98 | resident.com

ecosystem. As philanthropy is foundational to ELYSIAN, each film ends with a call to action. Fight for Ukraine will help raise money for When Life Sucks (WLS), a charity that benefits veterans across the world with post-traumatic stress disorder and other psychological scars from war. “The consequences of the battlefield – any battlefield – stay with us, and they don’t just affect the veteran… They affect that veteran’s family and loved ones,” said Dr. Sheri Biggs, a co-producer of the film who provides mental health services to veterans and works closely with When Life Sucks. “WLS exists to meet the mental health needs of veterans of all ages, with special emphasis on suicide prevention.” The Awareness Film Festival, taking place at the incredible Regal Cinemas in downtown Log Angeles, showcases social justice, mental wellness, animal activism and environmental

films. Movies premiering at this year’s Awareness Film Festival feature stars like Danny Trejo and Grammy-winning recording artist Moby. ELYSIAN launched in 2015 and has evolved into a comprehensive multimedia brand that includes print, digital, film, podcasting, social media, and commerce. ELYSIAN magazine has won several industry awards in editorial and design categories, and ELYSIAN’s CatWalk FurBaby documentary won Best Fashion Documentary at this year’s New York City International Fashion Film Festival. ELYSIAN Impact, the brand’s philanthropic arm, has disbursed more than $10 million over the past eight years to charities in five areas: women, children, animals, service, and the environment.
