EDITOR’S NOTE

Photograph by Susan Farewell

tanding at the southernmost point in the world before Antarctica, Cape Horn, one thinks about one’s life. In my case, I thought about Resident. How do we make the magazine better? How do we provide content that will both engage our readers and attract better advertisers? It is with these two thoughts in mind that I’ve embarked on a rebranding mission for the publication. To kick things off, we have the seductive and talented Melissa Lee on the cover. Shooting on set provided beautiful photos and I wish to thank Margo Manhattan for letting us use her beautiful jewelry. But back to Melissa, she gave us the wonkiest interview in recent memory. I think, you will agree, she also gave us stunning imagery. We thank her for her time!

On another note, we’ve got great pieces on interior design. This is in line with our commitment to bring you the best of New York. From Lenox dishware instructing on how to set a dual-purpose table (in this case Thanksgiving and Hanukkah) to using prints effectively and how to save on great pieces, we’ve thought about how to interest our readers in real estate and we believe interior design is the best way to do that. Furthermore, starting next month, we’ll be bring you an “at home” feature, which will introduce you to wa well-known or well-connected New Yorker. We thank you for your continued patronage and look out for great things to come!

This month we’ve continued our “25 List.” And it’s all about who I’d have to a dinner party and why. From Ann Coulter to Jamie Dimon and everyone in between, the list is meant to be thought provoking and in good fun. Look out for next month’s – it’s going to be a lot of laughs. Of course, we have travel editorial. From LA, the Danube, Antwerp and Japan, we’ve got your luxury travel needs covered. We scour the earth for the best, so that you – our readers – will know where to go when you’re making your travel plans.

Baggage Claim star Paula Patton takes the big questions. Asked about the “Blurred Lines” video, where the message —“Robin Thicke has a big d-ck” is flashed across the screen she laughs and quotes her husband as saying, “If I’m in the Miami Heat’s locker room, I don’t know where I stand,” while confessing in her eyes he’s super-sized. As to the report that Robin claims to have turned her into a bad girl, she reveals, “I hope I’m still a good girl and a bad girl at the same time.”.....Why is Robert Redford, 76, back on the screen in the absorbing All is Lost? “I work because I want to work, work keeps me going.” Smart..... Flirting With Flavors with Pamela Morgan

RESIDENT ALIEN amela Morgan, the chic Fifth Avenue socialite and culinary queen has, for more than three years, been conducting what she calls “Flirting With Flavors,” which one could call “the chicest cooking class imaginable” and which she would call ‘’more than a cooking class, more like a cooking party.” Six times a month she opens her state of the art kitchen to six candidates who want to upgrade their culinary skills. What is coolest about this culinary excursion is the fact that it has been attracting a wide range of bankers, industrialists and highly successful men about town who have come to realize that learning how to cook and prepare a meal is one of the classiest investments a man can adapt to impress a suitor or two. After 25 years of experience creating memorable events for clients such as

a long lasting bond and relationship. It is the perfect entree to establishing a memorable first move.” Recently yours truly was part of a “Flirting With Flavors” cooking class with a rather distinguished cast of investment bankers like Tony Santos and Andrew Kahner, the hot menswear designer, Michael Bastian, the film producer, John Sanchez and the MTV reality stud muffin, Tony Santucci - all learning how to whip up a blue ribbon meal of baked oysters with a beurre blanc emulsion, baked Atlantic salmon coated with mustard and breadcrumbs. We started the session over mojitos, which was the perfect way to loosen things up and then

Instant classics include the classic Margherita and the Vongole stacked with freshly shucked and chopped clams - amazingly delicious! A fine array of Insalate and first rate listing of wines along with the chic minimalist designed decor of the celebrated decorator Chris Smith make this, without doubt, one of the great informal new eateries in the Meat Packing District.

Speaking of meals, when New York magazine does its annual listing of Best Eats in New York City no doubt the next leading candidate for Best Pizza In New York City will be the brand new high-end pizza emporium and wine bar, Pizzetteria Brunetti at 626 Hudson Street.

I told you last month that a must have coffee table tome on the Christmas list this season is the upcoming fashion book from the legendary fashion stylist Lori Goldstein add to that list another fabulous coffee table book to spice up your collection “Out There: Design, Art, Travel, Shopping” by Maria Gabriela Brito.

Anderson Cooper and Bette Midler will no longer have to go all the way to Westhampton Beach to get their craving for this delicious Neapolitan style pizza. Since 2009 patrons have been flocking to the wood burning brick oven pizza of the father and son tandem, Michael and Jason Brunetti in the Hamptons, but since October locals have been flocking to the latest Pizzetteria Brunetti for its delicious take on artisanal pizza.

The Venezuelan born art connoisseur noted for helping devise the private art collections for clients such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Sean “P. Diddy” Combs has created this lively, colorful absorbing coffee table book, which is part memoir, part guide to creating the perfect home and filled with rich colorful images is a must have this season and is available at Amazon.com or Rizzoli. And I will be in touch. •

er combination of brains, beauty and charm has made her a leading figure in the financial news business. Her ability to gauge the subtle changes in the financial markets has made her a trusted source for analysis that is accurate and hard-hitting. Her ethnicity, Chinese-American, has made her a heroine to young boys (and especially) girls of the same background. Her name, of course, is Melissa Lee. And she is the anchor of Fast Money, one of the most successful programs on the award-winning CNBC.

Fast Times with Melissa Lee

PROFILE

At CNBC I did a little bit of everything; I did a lot of work in banking, hedge funds and private equity and then I got into the rotation of substituting for anchors that were out. I became the permanent substitute for Fast Money. When the anchor left, it was my shot.

I sat down with her at B&Co (fast becoming the most in-demand restaurant/bar/lounge in New York City) to talk about her formative years, what makes her a New Yorker and the state of the economy. In fact, it was the most wonky conversation I have had as Editor-inChief of Resident. Ironically, Melissa wasn’t, initially, interested in journalism. She says, “When I was growing up on Long Island I always thought I was going to be a doctor; did all types of research, went to Harvard for premed. It was what my family wanted me to do.” Yet, there was something about being in the press that appealed to her: “I wrote for a community newspaper, and while in college I worked at the school paper (The Harvard Crimson). Something clicked and eventually I gave up medicine and devoted myself to journalism.” Business news was a far cry from what she

t Resident November 2013

initially thought she wanted to cover. “I got a great internship with the New York Daily News in the business section, which is where they placed me. I wanted to cover politics and had a fantasy of covering City Hall; describing the ins and outs of politics, but I fell in love with business news.” In fact, she didn’t even pursue journalism after graduating from school: “I gravitated towards business and when I graduated from college, I didn’t get a job in journalism because it was a tough time for the industry and instead got a job as a business consultant.” But the bug of journalism would come back to bite her. After being offered a full ride for a MBA from her consulting firm, she declined and moved back to New York City. Her father wasn’t pleased, “I told my dad I was going to turn down their offer and move back to New York and find a job here. My dad said I was making the biggest mistake of my life.

Eventually, I landed a job as a PA (production assistant) at CNNFN; I got the job through the Asian-American Journalists Association.” Through charm and tenacity she found herself in front of the camera at Bloomberg TV. She quickly realized that this is where she belonged. And as the path of her career developed she became ever more comfortable. Clearly, she was being watched as she landed a permanent on-air gig at CNBC and moved up the ranks quickly. “At CNBC I did a little bit of everything; I did a lot of work in banking, hedge funds and private equity and then I got into the rotation of substituting for anchors that were out. I became the permanent substitute for Fast Money. When the anchor left, it was my shot.” Asked to describe the show she anchors daily at 5pm, she states: “It’s amazing! Think of it as ESPN - after the game, the announcers talk

PROFILE Jewelry Generously Provided by Margo Manhattan about highlights of the game and that is what Fast Money is modeled after. The graphics and the feeling are very sports oriented.” At this point of the conversation, it turns totally wonky. And it’s my fault – I couldn’t resist picking her brain about the state of the economy. While the debt limit crisis was raging at the time of the interview, I wanted her to focus beyond the short term problem. And she responded with aplomb: “I think beyond the debt ceiling, the markets are going to be poised for a period of a decent amount of growth.” She couldn’t help but continue, “Long term debt is not as much as a problem for

the United States because we are still the default and safe haven country. People will always want to buy our debt. I don’t think there will be an issue of buying our debt.” As for the macro state of the economy, she describes the situation: “We also know that on the government’s radar is the fact that the economy is actually improving. On Fast Money we believe that Quantitative Easing (QE) will shortly easy. They will start to remove those resources they were supplying. We are setting up within the next six months for a fairly positive market, which is a good thing.”

Resident /PWFNCFS t

PROFILE

Melissa’s world isn’t only about reporting on facts and figures. She also gets her hands dirty with informative and penetrating specials for CNBC. When pressed for more information on these programs, she obliges with: “I just finished a documentary, Rise of the Machines, which explains how everything is hooked up to censors and computers and can be controlled without putting any outside input. There are a lot of apps especially in medicine; there is an app that can start an EKG.” Ultimately she believes this Brave New World will be a good thing for the average American and for the country. “The cost of medicine will be so much lower and will be available to more people.” We moved away from her career and onto a subject that is dear to us at Resident – New York. When asked what New York means to her, Melissa is just as effervescent as when she is answering business questions, “Being a New Yorker means having every single option available to you. Anything you want to do, anything you want to have or anyone that you want to meet is all here; this is the center of the world. I’ve been to Hong Kong, London, Paris and many of the other financial centers of the world, but I will always come back.” She is such a true New Yorker she does something I hardly ever do – take a subway. She was incredulous to my shock at finding out that she takes mass transit, “Of course, I take the subway all the time.” And so it was with Melissa that, she is down-to-earth and very approachable. I am happy to report that I enjoyed the time that I spent with her. Melissa is a fascinating and engaging personality with a long career ahead of her. She is a trusted source of financial news and she wouldn’t have it any other way. The whole Resident staff thanks her for her time and wishes her the best of luck! •

A Time to Spaaah By Hillary Latos

In my opinion, anytime is a good time to spa. Who doesn’t want to be pampered and feel like royalty. Now with the change of seasons, there isn’t a better time to get hydrated, rejuvenated, and emerge a healthier, hydrated, and better person. Whether it’s a day spa in the city or a weekend spa getaway further afield, here are some of the premiere destination spas to prepare for the holidays.

Guerlain Spa Situated on the 19th floor of the Waldorf Towers, the Guerlain spa is one of Gotham’s finest destination spas that embodies luxury. Decorated in a glamorous and chic shimmering palette of grey and silver and adorned with crystal chandeliers, this French inspired oasis offers treatment suites with a private bathing lounge, signature Guerlain amenities, and personalized music selections. The pampering doesn’t end with the treatment, afterwards “The Final Touch” offers a complimentary shoe shine, garment steaming and make-up refresh over a glass of champagne.

In time for the holiday season, Guerlain has expanded their treatment menu to include microdermabrasion and microcurrent non-surgical lift procedures in addition to their signature Orchidée Impériale and Abeille Royale facial treatments that garners immediate anti aging skincare results.

The micro current lift and tone treatment rejuvenates aging skin cells by re-energizing multiple skin layers. Light technology relaxes facial tension, while microcurrent LEDs tighten facial contour and diminish the appearance of wrinkles and ultrasonic frequencies oxygenate the skin from within, leaving a radiant skin tone. Together, these treatments reduce fine lines and wrinkles, even pigmentation and diminish light acne scarring.

At the heart of the Abeille Royale Youth facial treatment is the exceptional repairing power of Royale Jelly Concentrate from Guerlain’s signature bees from the French island of Ouessant that has been extracted into the Abeille Royale Youth Face Treatment Oil. The result is hydrated skin with improved elasticity, firmness and tone with diminished fine lines. To highlight the power of bees and honey, guests will also taste Waldorf ’s

The mystery surrounding the healing powers of spring water have dated back to the legend of Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth, and Saratoga has built a history on its world renowned effervescent springs. Since the 19th century visitors have made the pilgrimage to Saratoga Springs for its health benefits in the naturally carbonated water in 17 natural springs that dot the parks throughout the city each with its unique taste and high amounts of lithium. At the heart of the Saratoga Spa State Park is the Gideon Putnam Resort and Roosevelt Baths & Spa with nature as its back door. The resort was first discovered by Gideon Putnam during the Victorian Era and the health benefits of the natural springs were later recognized in 1929 by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Since then thousands have found that hydrotherapy and bathing in effervescent mineral water has been proven to revitalize and heal the body because of its high amount of negative ions that increase blood circulation and cell oxygenation while boosting the immune system. Soak in 20 minutes of pre treatment hydrotherapy that mixes cold mineral water with hot water to achieve a 97 degree temperature. Once the body is relaxed take a signature or deep tissue massage to further excrete the toxins and increase circulation or take in one of many treatments. There are also detoxifying wraps, clinical dermo corrective facials and wellness packages that focus on ayurvedic, acupuncture and whole body approaches. With so many treatments to choose from stay

for the weekend in the historic landmarked Gideon Putnam resort that’s testament to the imposing 1930s Georgian Revival style from the Gilded Age. TRAVEL glimpse an elaborate stone villa on the outskirts of Los Angeles. It looks like the set of the movie Jane Eyre, but it is relatively new, built in the Jazz Age. Greystone Mansion is a faux English estate, solid and elegant, surrounded by 18 acres of manicured gardens. Once a private residence for an oil magnate, Edward L. Doheny, the baronial edifice was constructed in 1927 and was used by his family as a country retreat. Now it serves as a historic landmark, and it no longer sits in isolation - the manor is now in the luxurious enclave of Beverly Hills.

As I drive up, the solid stone house with a gray slate roof sits very incongruously among the lighter colored architecture that surrounds it. I park my car in the visitor lot and walk towards the house, down an elegant Cyprus tree-lined walkway. I have some vague hope to take a tour but at the courtyard entrance I hit a disappointing snag. A small sign reads: “Graystone Mansion is closed for an event”. I inquire if by any chance the grounds are open. No. Today is the day the “Friends of Graystone” – the philanthropic donors of the historic estate – have a private party. I have to come back another day. I turn away only to be called back by an intrepid committeewoman. “You could tour the house if you would like to become a ‘Friend of Graystone’.” One insignificant personal check later, I am invited to the afternoon event. Inside the towering entrance hall, the Beverly Hills ladies have arrived in flowing silk dresses and tunics, some wearing picture hats. Suddenly I am in the middle of a party that Jay Gatsby might have attended. There are refreshments with certain LA exoticism – cucumber water, and ice water infused with watermelon juice – delicious on the extraordinarily hot day, tea sandwiches and pastries. Guides stand in the corridors of the house explaining the history. Most astonishingly, there is a room where a mysterious murder was committed, much of the puzzle still left unsolved. As I enter the Conservatory, I am suddenly in a game of CLUE. And along comes a docent – Colonel Mustard, compete with rotund physique and moustache who offers to show me the bowling alley in the basement, and the speakeasy (hidden bar) that is concealed behind a paneled wall. As the history of the family is told to me in dribs and drabs, it strikes me again how much of Los Angeles is built on fantasy. Here the life of an ordinary American mimics the heraldic pomp of an English lord. The family even shot game from the balcony of the drawing room, which must have been quite a sight. I get the feeling that this house was filled with playacting – every room seems like an elaborate set. Later as I drive around Los Angeles, my sense of otherworldliness increases. Billboards proclaim the latest movie releases in superlative language. Everything seems larger than life and I am seduced by the trendy glamor. Ferraris and other high-octane sports cars pass me with a blur on the highway, downtown skyscrapers gleam, and Bel Air, and Beverly Hills seem extraordinarily lush – behind gated wrought-iron grilles white mansions are set off by velvet lawns and unfamiliar flora. Out on the Pacific coast highway, the chicane of road towards Malibu is breathtakingly beautiful. Just the pure seduction of driving along with little to do, is so different from my rushed days in New York where my time is spent literally in a more pedestrian way.

A few days before I have to leave, I have an appointment to tour the famous Getty Villa, in the Pacific Palisades. Built by oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, it is a museum dedicated to artifacts of ancient Greece and Rome. I want to research another novel; my main character is an archaeologist. The Getty Villa is like stepping back in time. It is a faithful reproduction of a Roman house – Villa of the Papyri, in Herculaneum outside of Naples. Again this is movie-set kind of construction – all illusion, with touches of gilt. Having toured the ruins of many a real Roman villa, this reproduction is so authentic, one almost expects Marcus Aurelius to come wandering through the tablinum in a toga – or at least a fabulously handsome actor in the role. The real artifacts are breathtaking, sculpture and fragments of ancient life; oil lamps, jewelry, pottery. The collection gives me great inspiration for another novel. Later, eating lunch on the cliff side terrace café of the museum, I am carried away by the beauty of the setting, high above the Pacific. The blue shimmering water might be the Bay of Naples, the scrubby vegetation not unlike that which grows on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Dreaming in the sun, I try to sum up all I have experienced in Los Angles. Although I have only been here less than a week, it feels like I have entered a new life. I will be going back to the East Coast with regret. Los Angeles has seduced my senses. But what exactly is different, apart from the climate? I arrive at a few inchoate conclusions. In Los Angeles, very little is permanent. All is constantly changing, morphing with current fashion. Yet the desire for permanence is palpable when you consider the faux Roman villas and English country estates. But Los Angeles revolves around an image on a screen in a darkened room. Handprints in concrete outside a Chinese Theater do nothing to change that. But even these tangible vestiges of past stars – Sonjia Henie, Myrna Loy, John Barrymore – are trod over by new generation of tourists who favor box office blockbusters, with little knowledge of the Hollywood golden years. It’s the impermanence that gives Los Angeles its appeal. There is always something new, sublime and exciting around the corner. A place of great natural beauty and enchantment, where fantasy is real. It is Shangri-La. •

After a day or so in Los Angeles, I am completely changed. Relaxed, more physically aware. I book lunches and dinners with friends. Life slows down. I am here on book tour, but after my appearances, I go to popular watering holes: AOC in West Hollywood for lunch, Nobu and Nikita out on the beach in Malibu for dinner. Even the food is different here: there are no visible carbs on either the tables or the waistlines.

Movie Stars on The Danube By Travelin’ Gal Maxine Albert

Budapest is a supremely strollable veritable open-air museum of dazzling art nouveau architecture. Every scenic street boasts striking buildings decorated with sconces, statues, bas relief and lovely balconies, the famed Opera House being just one among many. The belle époque boulevard, Andrassy, with its high-end boutiques and chic cafes, is often compared to the Champs -Elysees. No wonder Hollywood comes calling for a set to evoke Paris, with money left to pay the big stars. Brad Pitt filmed World War Z here with Angelina and the kids in tow. Adrien Brody (of Hungarian descent ) starring as Houdini in the much anticipated series, will be filming in Budapest. During breakfast at my hotel, the luxurious Royal Corinthia, Ian Mc Shane, of ‘Deadwood’ fame, was at the next table. He is shooting the new series about Ian Fleming, the man who created James Bond, here. Jonathan Rhys Meyers, also a guest of the hotel, is currently filming the most famous vampire in history – Dracula. The 5 star historic Royal Corinthia, in the heart of the city on Budapest’s Grand Boulevard, has a glamorous cinematic past of its own. When it opened in 1896 as the Grand Hotel Royal, The Lumière brothers screened their moving pictures in the hotel’s opulent ballroom, making it the first cinema outside Paris. Women in gowns and tuxedoed men thronged to the fashionable in-spot for a night at the movies. First they dined at the hotel then off to the ballroom for the film, a light supper with champagne afterwards to discuss the picture. The sumptuous Grand Ballroom, adorned with striking chandeliers and gold curtains, is used today for events and weddings. The legendary hotel, which has been beautifully restored to its original grandeur, with stunning lobby and elegant Le Bar, has long been a favorite of celebrities and movie stars, the great Josephine Baker and Catherine Deneuve, among them. Helen Mirren was a guest when filming ‘The Debt’ in Budapest, as was Andrew Lloyd Weber for the filming of his musical ‘ Evita ’. The General Manager, Tibor, now in his 70’s, regaled me with entertaining anecdotes. “All the stars had a massage at the hotel before they performed, opera singer Jose Carreras, Pink, all of them”, he said. So off I headed to the hotel’s esteemed Royal Spa, and royal treatment I received. After a dip in the expansive pool, a heavenly massage was followed by a moisturizing facial with an eyebrow shaping that made me look ten years younger. Thank you Dora. When Gerard Depardieu is in residence, he collaborates with the kitchen about his meals– the effect of both being French and playing a chef in a movie. The food is superb whether dining on the tastiest Goulash soup and perfect veal at the hotel’s Royal Brasserie or relishing Asian specialties at Rickshaw. Rock star chef

Late afternoons, the action is at the coffee house cafes, where locals meet and socialize over coffee, tea, aperitifs, light bites and the scrumptious de rigueur Hungarian pastries. Everyone has their favorite haunt. Robert Pattinson of ‘Twilight’ fame, filmed ‘Bel Ami’ at the lavish New York Café/Budapest. Called the most beautiful cafe in the world, it boasts Venetian chandeliers, marvelous frescoes and gilded Baroque adornments. Relishing rich butter cream, luscious chocolate and fruit delights while listening to tunes like ‘ As Time Goes By’ on the piano was divine decadence. Other notables are the Parisi Café, with walls and ceilings as ornate as a royal palace, the elegant Astoria Café whose exterior looks like The Waldorf and the grand historic Central Café. Even before Roman times, and ever since, Budapest has loved its hot springs, lots of them - believed to enhance that movie star glow. Close by The Corinthia, The Szechenyi baths offer a dozen pools fed by geothermal springs and three outdoor pools. The men playing chess in the outdoor pool are as emblematic of Budapest’s unique culture as the elegant coffee houses, and art nouveau architecture embellishing this city on the banks of the Danube &UZFL UIF )BNQUPOT PG #VEBQFTU KVTU B minute drive, offers gastronomic dining, beautiful vineyards and bucolic countryside. At Rokusfalvy’s picturesque wine terrace, I lunched on mouth watering plum soup, lamb and freshest vegetables from their garden paired with their excellent wines. Viggo Mortensen was so enchanted with Etyek when he starred in ‘Good,’ filmed in Budapest, he took a wine tour. Nearby is Korda Studios, where ‘The Borgias’ was shot, which offers tours of movie making. My last night in Budapest, as I cruised the Danube aboard the Legenda panoramic boat, I took in the vista with those glorious art nouveau buildings. It felt like I was in a wondrous fairy tale - or a glamorous Hollywood movie. • Corinthia Hotel: corinthia.com/Budapest his beloved grilled mackerel. From 1873 to 1934, more than two million migrants departed through Antwerp’s docks to New York City’s Ellis Island and Canada to avoid persecution search for a better life, and boarded the Red Star Line steamer ships with all of their worldly possessions and dreams in tow. After years of painstaking restoration, The Red Star Line Museum has opened in the same complex as a memorial of walking in the migrant’s footsteps to uncover their personal accounts as they made their courageous journeys across Europe to an unfamiliar land. By keeping meticulous records of the passengers as well as photos, letters, personal momentos, and relics from the ship, touching personal experiences are recreated to give the visitor a picture of what life was like on this 20+ day journey to the New World in steerage from passing scrutinizing medical examinations to life on board the ship to another subjugating exam on Ellis Island before allowance into the US. First and second class passengers lived large with lavish accommodations, formal gourmet meals, and nightly cocktail parties, while steerage was a different world with crowded and often unsanitary conditions. Notable passengers on the ship were Albert Einstein and Irving Berlin. If you enjoyed the history of Ellis Island this is an important and comprehensive attraction that completes the picture of immigration to the US. Chronicling the expressions and emotions

of the immigrants passing through Antwerp was artist Eugeen van Miegham a passionate realist, who would sketched thousands of foreigners as they waited for days to board the ship. From old bearded men whose faces and posture demonstrated years of hardship and despair to the innocent young families with all of their meager possessions held in a cart and a glimmer of hope in their eyes. The most comprehensive collection of his work can be seen at the Eugeen van Miegham museum on Ernest Van Dijckkaai 9 located in the heart of the historic district. The best way to explore Antwerp and truly appreciated the relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere is by foot where the majority of museums, shopping, attractions, and nightlife are within walking distance of the center. One of the best ways to explore the city’s attractions and museum is with the City Card that allows free access over 48 hours to all of their museums and churches and discounts to various attractions for 28 Euros. The Northern district and waterfront is home to the Red Star Line Museum and the striking MAS, Museum aan de Stroom that tells the story of the city, the port and the world, housed in an architectural gem with ribboned glass windows and red tile that has unparalleled views of the city. This neighborhood has become Antwerp’s latest trendy area dotted with cafes and restaurants with locals enjoying

the good life. Adjacent to the museums is the uber hip Luxe that sits in a historic bi level house and serves contemporary Belgian fare of seafood and meat with views overlooking the lively harbor. Philips Pakhuis is a local favorite housed in a renovated warehouse that is designed like an lofty living room with retro furniture and serves Belgian favorites using seasonal and local ingredients. Take a stroll down the waterfront passing through the historical center and visit the impressive Gothic Cathedral of our Lady built in 1351 that houses some of the world’s most famous Rubens tryptichs. In the historic district, one of the most unique museums is the Plantin Moretus Museum that was formerly the stately home of printer Christoffel Plantin and provides an overview of the history of book printing from the 15th to the 18th century with some of the oldest printing presses in the world. Admire the rich furnishings and regal surroundings throughout the various rooms. Another notable museum is the Rubens art museum is located in his palatial home that is a wonderful preservation of the Baroque period and displays a significant body of his work spanning his illustrious career. As Antwerp was one of the most important cities to flourish during the Belle Epoque era, children and adults will enjoy the city zoo founded in 1843, which is one of the

unique one of a kind finds as well as fine antiques to post modern contemporary pieces. The most famous Antwerp designers Anne Demuelmeester, Dirk Bikkemberg, and Dries Van Noten have their flagships in this district.

Antwerp is a true shoppers paradise. Known as the diamond capital of the world, about 80 percent of the world’s diamonds pass through their exchanges, and it is also the headquarters of the IGA and GIA that rate and value every diamond for its cut, clarity, color, and carat. With careful planning bargains can be had when buying direct with the majority of diamond wholesalers located in the Jewish district and around the central station.

Located in the Horin Entei, the hotel’s Spa Entei Sejutsu provides a signature Yakushiyama treatment. It was created from the inspiration of over a two thousand year history of Yakushiyama at Yamashiro Onsen. The refreshing treatment uses hot spring water, which is rich in minerals and medical herbs. As guests sit in the water they feel the water and additives absorb into the body leaving the visitor in deep comfort and relaxation. Adjacent to the spa, is the Horin is an inviting forest. With a view of the sacred red pine tree in the center, the terrace reaches out, into the wild garden. While enjoying the view, guests can enjoy a dinner, breakfast or yoga. The red pine tree is a symbol of the belief that things that are considered useless are instead a regarded as great value. The bent and twisted tree has no use for timber; therefore it is left uncut and provides shade to travelers. Peace can be found in the shade of a tree and echoes the meaning of Mukayu. When visitors leave Beniya Mukayu they realize that they have left their daily routine and chaotic life behind and have embraced a peaceful state of mind that encourages spiritual growth. • Beniya Mukayu Hotel 922-0242 Kaga-shi 55 1 3 Yamashiro Onsen, Japan (81) 761-77-1340 mukayu.com

The Legend of Sanibel, Florida The first European landed on our shores about 500 years ago. Columbus whet Spain’s appetite for exploration. He dreamed of reaching Asia by sailing west, but he needed funding. Queen Isabella denied him three times; finally she declared “I will assume the undertaking for my own crown of Castile, and am ready to pawn my jewels to defray the expenses of it, if the funds in the treasury should be found inadequate.” In 1492 Columbus’ ships landed in the Bahamas and he claimed them for Spain. His expedition continued on to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Columbus returned to the Spanish court with natives and gold, exaggerating the significance of all he had found. Historians believe he was accompanied by Juan Ponce de León on his second expedition. When rumors of gold surfaced, Juan was given permission to find it. When he heard tales of a fountain of youth, he looked for that too. Around the time of Easter celebrations, he landed in a beautiful place he named Pascua Florida – Spanish for feast or festival of flowers. He continued exploring Florida’s coast and named Sanibel “SanYbel” after Saint Isabella of Portugal – the patron saint of brides.”

rom neighborhood hideaways to splashy new openings, New York City’s culinary scene never sleeps. The holidays are a perfect time to celebrate and enjoy some of NYC’s finest offerings spanning the melting pot of flavors that we have come to love in our great city, from the classics like French, Italian, American to the exotic flavors of India, here are some of our favorites that will guarantee an unforgettable dining experience.

The Water Club East River between 29 & 32 St. (212) 683-3333 thewaterclub.com

Villard After experiencing a $100 Million renovation the Palace Hotel has unveiled its latest landmark restaurant, Villard, with renowned chef Michel Richard at the helm. Known for his formal French haute cuisine, he partnered with Jeffrey Beers to keep the integrity of the landmarked gilded mansion that was once owned by railroad tycoon Henry Villard, and pays homage to its history with a lenticular hologram that morphs Mr. Villard with Mr. Richard bringing the past to the present as the backdrop to the bar. In the dining room the dramatic centerpiece is a clear floor to ceiling wine cellar for patrons to choose their vintage libations and the gallery features larger than life neon lit portraits of iconic Hollywood starlets from the past. To complete the total experience of power dining, Chef Richard displays his gastronomic talents and artistic vision with beautifully presented entrees in a resplendent setting.

The Water Club After a year post Hurricane Sandy, The Water Club, has reopened to its former grandeur. With its romantically lit waterfront location offering unsurpassed views of the New York skyline and East river, this New York institution has served as a destination to celebrate special occasions for its loyal patrons over the last 30 years. The classic yet contemporary American menu befits the celebratory moments in our lives with offerings such as an extensive raw bar along with perfectly executed seafood such as spicy seared tuna, steamed lobster and meat dishes such as double cut stuffed pork chops. For those in the know mention “Gael Sent Me” and enjoy a ‘surf and turf ’ special with a half lobster & sirloin with two sides for only $35. During the warmer months, The Crow’s Nest on the upper deck offers outdoor dining and weekly barbecues for one of the liveliest happy hours in town against a breathtaking backdrop.

Tamarind Tribeca After a successful run in the Flatiron district, restaurateur Avtar Walia has opened a Tribeca outpost serving fine Indian cuisine in a modern and striking setting. To give an airy feel to this two floor 11,000 square foot venue, there are over 100 feet of windows bringing the light and vibrancy of Tribeca into the restaurant. The elegant banquettes and diaphanous drapes lend warmth and intimacy to this aerie awash in a rich palette of bronze, copper, gray and olive. Classic Indian dishes from the Punjab region are infused with delicate and complex flavors in a range of vegetarian, seafood and meat options such as Chimbori Jalwa- crabmeat with madras curry, chilies, and scallions, tamarind scallops, bataki kosha- duck with mustard garam masala, and tangerine chutney, vegetarian curry stew, and of course their famous tandoori that features lamb, chicken, and sea bass. Restaurant Roundup

DINING

Paname Imagine having a favorite neighborhood bistro in Montmartre, which is what owner Bernard Ros had in mind when creating the Art Deco themed Paname, which is also slang for Paris. For over 30 years Ros ran French bistro Meli Melo on Madion Ave developing a steady following before losing his lease and moving to the Sutton Place area. A Parisian native, he’s in the restaurant business for the long run bringing his seasoned experience to deliver classic and familiar French comfort food with affordable prices to this side of the Atlantic with uncomplicated dishes like Seafood bouillabase, Mediterranean sauteed cod, and crème brule that are as authentic and unadulterated as dining in the Quartier Latin. A one man show, Bernard keeps his standards high and personally shops for all the provisions daily, prepares the recipes, and also works as the pastry chef to ensure that everything is created exactly as it would be in his own home.

Pippali 129 East 27 St. (212) 689-1999 pippalinyc.com

Benares Midtown Named after a city in Northern India, Benares focuses on the lush spices and abundant variety of Indian cuisine. Acclaimed Indian chef Peter Beck partnered with restaurateur Inder Singh to bring some of their favorite regional dishes from the Western State of Utter Pradesh to NYC’s Midtown West that specializes delectable vegetarian dishes but also offers tempting seafood and meat specialties. Signature dishes include the Sevai Tomato Kurma with mussels, scallops, shrimp, and crab claws in a garlic tomato sauce, Iggaru Royaprawns simmered in star anise, tamarind and coconut, and tandoori hen. The exotic cuisine pairs perfectly with their robust libations created by mixologist Jeff Bartels who has created signature classics with a twist such as tequila with roasted pineapple, orange liqueur and chili grenadine. Highlighting the rich Indian heritage and culture in a warm and intimate atmosphere, plush banquettes and dark wood tables are surrounded by walls adorned with opulently embroidered Indian saries from the region.

Pippali Like the Indian long pepper it is named for, Pippali, has a distinctive, unique and memorable flavor –spicy, tangy and sweet at the same time- which can also describe the latest venture from Chef Peter Beck and Pradeep Shinde located in the heart of Curry Hill. Their goal was to take a modern approach to a pan Indian cuisine and offer the exotic presentation at affordable prices. Start with the multi textured Papri Chat that features crisps topped with potatoes, chickpeas and tamarind sauce or the Kekkada Thokku with crab meat, mustard seeds, curry leaves, ginger and garlic. Tempting entrees include the vegetarian Jaipura Kofta with pumpkin and chickpea dumplings in a masala sauce, tandoori sea bass in a curry sauce, or Neer Dosa- crepes filled with mango chutney topped with mixed seafood. Like Your Beautiful Sister By Christopher A. Pape

s many of you know, I go out to restaurants quite frequently. On these excursions, I meet people from all walks of life. Inevitably, once they find out I write about restaurants, they ask for recommendations. This isn’t so much of a problem for French, Japanese and even Indian cuisines. But when it comes to Italian, it’s a more difficult proposition. Firstly, there are too many choices and as an Italian I can see the positives and negatives of each establishment, in a way that I can’t do with the others.

my guest and I were in heaven. The creations, prepared with care and skill by, Chef Molly Nickerson, were not only a testament of the quality of food, but also a love song to Italy.

Yet, there is an Italian restaurant I had the pleasure of eating at recently, located on the Lower East Side, which I have and will continue to recommend to those aforementioned askers. That restaurant, Sorella, is chic without being pretentious and cool without being annoyingly hip. The staff – from bartender to owner – is friendly, knowledgeable and efficient.

Other dishes were just as divine. Lingurian anchovies with salsa verde, lemon butter, and hazelnuts, served on flatbread were briny, tart – with the perfect amount of crunch. The vitello tonnato, a perennial favorite in Italy, was served on a crostini with shaved celery, parsley and fried capers. It was truly an enlightened dish.

But we aren’t here to talk about the staff or the interior; it’s all about the food and from first mouthful of appetizer to last bite of dessert,

Mention must be made of the most unique dish on the menu (and arguably the tastiest the broccoli fritto. Served tempura-style with

Crispy, warm, spicy and with the on-trend addition of umami, it was a wonder to behold. I went gaga over it. I would be doing Sorella a disservice if I didn’t mention their pastas. From an Agnolotti with celery root puree, braised oxtail and sage butter to a Pici with spicy pork ragu, Salvatore ricotta and pepperoncini – each pasta dish was a little piece of perfection. Desserts too are worth trying. No matter what you have, you will leave with a smile on your face. Trust me, there are few places I can so highly recommend. How to Find the Time to Do Everything Jen Groover Discusses 4 Tips that really work!

Empowerment and Business Expert Entrepreneur, Author & Mom Jen Groover, Shares Her Tips for Raising Happy, Healthy, Empowered Children in New York City

CREATE A “DRAMA-FREE ZONE” SO YOU CAN STAY FOCUSED.

1

Detox the drainers in your live and increase the enhancers. Energy management is the most important skill set you can learn to be more productive with less effort. Begin this by creating the “drama-free zone”. Make everyone around you be aware that this is the “state” you live in and that no drama or needless drains are allowed in your space. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and exude positive energy. Avoid activities, people and foods that drain your energy.

LET GO OF THE IDEAL OF SO CALLED “WORK LIFE BALANCE.”

2

There’s no perfect ratio or schedule that defines whether or not you are both a good mother and a successful career woman. This is an illusionary term that create false hope and expectations that there is some standard of balance between your two major roles. This creates an increased sense of guilt, stress and anxiety.

EXPRESS YOUR GOALS TO FULFILL YOUR DREAMS.

3

Speaking openly with family, friends and business associates will help them realize you are not ignoring them; they will see you have specific goals in mind and if you are supported more effectively, you will have an easier time achieving them. This also teaches your children, by modeling, how to set goals and work toward them. When you share your goals openly with loved ones, often they will seek to find ways to achieve them, even if it’s just through encouragement.

DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU.

4

Stop comparing yourself to others and create your own family’s “normal.” Women and family dynamics have evolved so much so quickly, there really isn’t a set standard anymore. Be empowered and make the choices that work for the well-being of your family, don’t work about what “everyone else” is doing.

The Joys of Traveling

with your Children By Dr. Jo Webber e have a 4 and a 7 year old and travel regularly with them both in and outside of the United States. While traveling in the US, I’ve learned a few things that at first were not so obvious to me. The first is about the importance of a free and varied breakfast! Never before was this important to me in my choice of business hotels, but traveling with my own kids has lead me to appreciate this very much. Hotels such as the Staybridge Suites and Embassy Suites both do a great job with a free cooked breakfast. I also have learned that suites in business hotels are incredibly – no– unbelievably expensive. The Embassy Suites solve this by offering two rooms for the price that you would pay for a regular room in a business hotel. However sometimes you may want the extra amenities provided by some of the 4 and 5 star hotels. We like to stay at Hyatts – it’s a great hotel chain, but there is one very important thing that Hyatt does that other 4 and 5 star hotels do not do. They accept 3 and 4 year olds into their kids camp program and this is HUGE. This means tons of fun for my kids, and relaxation for my partner and me. Most hotels’ kids camp programs run for 5-12 year olds.

Once you have figured out the basic, but very important concerns about where you are going to sleep and a free breakfast, you need to consider the following: What are the kids going to have to do on this trip? A swimming pool is a big big deal when you are under ten. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it does need to be warm. On a recent business trip, my kids had so much fun at the pool when I went to a meeting. They still fondly talk about ‘that wonderful hotel’. The pool made it for them. Playgrounds are big too – kids like the simple pleasures and making sure that you have access to a playground in or near your hotel has been a very big part of road trips that we have taken in the past. With a bit of in-car entertainment for road trips – maybe a loaded iPad or two and headphones – you can travel inexpensively and successfully with small children. Just don’t try to have a romantic dinner with them. Although I have to admit – I just took my kids to that honeymoon retreat of Bora Bora. All the tables were set for two except ours – set for four every night!Ήt

DR. JOE’S A – B – C GUIDE FOR A THANKFUL HOLIDAY SEASON “The manner of giving is worth more than the gift.” – Pierre Corneille, French poet The holiday season can bring about a myriad of feelings and emotions. Tis’ the season to put aside our differences and disagreements, and in doing so, we allow ourselves to truly be thankful and embrace the spirit of this holiday season. A – Accept. Accept others for who they are and focus on the things you like about them and yourself. Empower yourself to shift our attention away from others and place that awareness onto yourself. Not judging others or yourself is a crucial step toward acceptance. B – Believe. Believe in this special time of year and you open yourself up to the magic of the season. Show loved ones you care by sending them a special note of a fond memory you shared together and spread good cheer all around you. C – Compassion. Keep yourself in a place of compassion and embrace empathy for others. Smile at your neighbors, thank your servers, hold doors open for the person behind you, and find ways to help others throughout your day. D – Donate. The holidays are a perfect time to give to those in need, and your children can learn an invaluable lesson in doing so. Your family can collect clothes, toys, and other items in your home and let your children help choose the charities your family donations. E – Effort. Make an effort to continue to focus on yourself, your family, and your needs, as this can be a very busy time in your life. Continue to foster a healthy lifestyle and spend those extra moments with your children so they don’t feel lost in the hustle and bustle. F – Forgive. When you come to a place of forgiveness, you allow yourself to let go of the negativity and move forward to what can be. Forgiveness allows us to let go of the anger and resentment and can lead to greater well-being and healthier relationships. Consider the value of forgiving and its importance in your life. G – Gratitude. Living a life of gratitude keeps us in a joyful place. Set aside a few moments throughout each day to be in a place of gratitude. Each morning when you awake and each night when you go to bed, say “thank you” as you place each foot on the floor. Remind yourself of all the little things to be grateful for. •

Thanksgivukkah Lenox, Where Entertaining is @ By Isaiah Negron

or the first time since 1888, Thanksgiving and the Jewish tradition of Hanukkah will share the same date, November 25, 2013. This will not happen again for another 79,000 years. Thanksgiving, first named a United States holiday in 1863, and Hanukkah, dating back to 165 BC Jerusalem, are two unique celebrations representing generations of history, culture and pride. To commemorate this once in a lifetime moment, Lenox, America’s foremost tabletop and giftware brand along with their entertaining expert and celebrity event planner Andrea Correale have joined forces. Together, they have created a festive table that celebrates both events simultaneously. Since 1889, Lenox has brought families and friends together for countless occasions. Here, Andrea and Lenox, “Where Entertaining is @,” bring these two holidays together on one dazzling table.

Entrée Potato Pancake Challah Bread Stuffed Turkey Noodle Kugel Cupcake with Creamy Apricot Chutney Slow Roasted Baby Carrots drizzled with Lavender and Honey Infusion Delicious Apples stuffed with Sweet Potato Kugel Dessert Pumpkin Cheesecake topped with Hanukkah Gelt

Potato Pancake Challah Bread Stuffing Ingredients: 1 Pound of Fresh Challah Bread (Cubed) 2 Pounds Shredded Potatoes 6 Ounces Melted Butter 2 Onions (Grated, or small diced) 4 Large Carrots (Small dice) 4 Celery Stalks (Small dice) 2 shredded apples Salt & pepper to taste 3 Tbsp Olive Oil 2 Eggs 3 cups chicken stock (or more until very moist, not soupy)

As the only company that still makes bone china in the USA, Lenox continues to grow and evolve, expanding their repertoire in unprecedented ways while still holding true to their core mission of providing classic and beautiful tabletop collections at a variety of prices. Now, the Lenox brand, which includes elegant tabletop accessories such as glass stemware and flatware, has expanded into creating distinctive collections of housewares, chic home décor, fashionable bridal sets and fine jewelry. For this festive feast dubbed “Thanksgivukkah,” Andrea has chosen Lenox’s stylish French Perle collection, classic everyday stoneware that features an elegant antique trim and intricate beaded motifs. For the menu, she combined historical elements from traditional Thanksgiving and Hanukkah dinners and inventive recipes for a harmonious meal. Lenox selected Correale as their new entertainment expert to bring a fresh approach to their vast selection of home entertaining options. Andrea has created parties for everyone from Jimmy Fallon to Billy Joel and Russell Simmons and conceived the stylish wedding reception of Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon. She has an infinite list of innovative and exciting tips and ideas to help every host use Lenox to create fun and sophisticated parties in their own homes continuing the tradition of charm and classic beauty Lenox brings to everyday meals and special occasions alike. Andrea’s exclusive tips and recipes for Lenox are available at lenox.com/entertainingusa.

Directions: In a large saucepan, heat olive oil. Add carrots, cook for 5 minutes, and then add celery and onions until soft. Then add the shredded potatoes and cook until lightly browned. In a separate large bowl, add the cubed bread, pour the melted butter over the bread, and dash with salt, pepper. Add everything from the pan into the bowl with the bread and mix. In another bowl beat 2 whole eggs and pour into stuffing, add chicken stock, mixing stuffing until it is very moist, but not soupy. Add apples and mix until everything is incorporated evenly. Stuff the turkey and bake the turkey in an oven until there is an internal temperature (OF THE STUFFING) of 165 degrees.

About Andrea Andrea Correale’s quest for a place in hospitality history began at home, as she was inspired by her mother’s example of setting beautiful tables for every occasion. She is president of Elegant Affairs Caterers, a luxury event planning company for parties in Manhattan, Long Island and the Hamptons. Her expertise in creating chic and unique parties paired with her culinary flair has attracted a roaster of celebrity clients and big brands including Gucci, HBO and American Express. As for the “Thanksgivukkah” table, Andrea says, “My idea is to combine Thanksgiving with the flair of the Jewish holiday, Hanukkah. Potato Latke appetizers garnished with Crème Fraîche or a honey drizzle keep the start of the meal light, saving room for the main course.” Using challah bread gives her stuffing a tasty Hanukkah twist. Apples stuffed with kugel and sweet potatoes create delectable side dishes to complement the Thanksgiving turkey. For the desserts, Andrea suggests a layered pumpkin parfait topped with chocolate gelt coins and apple pie with a rugula crumble, Thanksgiving classics with a touch of Hanukkah’s influence. “Anybody can make these,” says Andrea. “You just have to have fun with it!”

rban kitchens have never looked so clean, crisp and bright. The use of classic cream and ivory color schemes have always been in style, especially when it comes to suburban kitchens. Recently, modernized versions of white kitchen designs have become super trendy and fabulous for Manhattan’s apartments. New Yorkers have updated the aesthetic of contemporary white kitchens by integrating white marble countertops, minimalistic lacquer or glass and aluminum cabinetry, glossy subway tiles or marble backsplashes, ultrapolished professional appliances, sleek water fixtures, and adding slender pendants or a dramatic lighting fixture. These urban white kitchens tend to also feature an oversized island or a wall of cabinets. White is a fantastic color for apartments’ kitchens because it makes them appear larger, brighter, and more glamorous. 737 Park Avenue, Macklowe Properties’ new luxurious condominium, perfectly exhibits dazzling all-white kitchens offering white marble floors, countertops and backsplash, glass and aluminum cabinetry and Miele stainless steel appliances. Those are all things people are drawn to.” When she’s not coming up with brilliant marketing strategies, Shelling likes to work out at women’s boot camp Strong Healthy Women in addition to relaxing with good food, wine and live music. With a strong start from the gate, Pedicure.com continues to grow and capture the imagination of manicure and pedicure devotees worldwide. “I see Pedicure.com as the name on everyone’s lips,” Shelling says. “My mantra is success isn’t what you accomplish, it’s what you inspire others to do.” • pedicure.com

Mischon de Reya’s

Michael Stutman New York’s Top Divorce Lawyer By Isaiah Negron s President of the New York Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and head of the Family Group at the prestigious Mishcon de Reya law firm, Michael Stutman has set the standard for what it means to be an elite New York lawyer. With more than thirty years of family law experience, he has helped countless clients through some of the most difficult circumstances of their lives, handling both settlements as well as actual court trials. In 1993, Stutman co-authored his first book, “How to Divorce in New York” and this fall is publishing his second, “Divorce in New York.” Since 2008, he has been listed as one of “America’s Best Lawyers” on the Best Lawyers website. “Being included in America’s Best Lawyers is an honor and it requires that you keep your standards high,” said Stutman. He has also been designated a “Super Lawyer” every year since the beginning of that classification 2006.

In his new book, “Divorce in New York,” Stutman explains for the “non-lawyer” the technical terms and procedures of getting a divorce in New York State. He gives the reader the understanding they need to face divorce proceedings. “The gestalt of the book is to de-mystify the process,” explains Michael. “The goal is to enable the reader to participate in an efficient manner and take some ownership of their own proceedings. This makes people feel less powerless.” As a companion book, “Divorce in New York” is less of a legal narrative and more about the methodology of divorce, “explaining the sometimes harsh realities that people may not truly understand about divorce,” Stutman adds. “It conveys a specific message and I believe in it strongly.” As part of a syndicated series on the legal logistics regarding the diverse divorce laws that vary from state to state, it is no wonder the publisher sought him out specifically to write the New York edition. As a lawyer, Michael strives to bring order to a potentially messy process that affects thousands of families every year. “Divorce touches every aspect of family life and requires a practitioner to have a broad knowledge and experiential base,” he says. “It’s not a cookie cutter process and you can’t get complacent when it comes to staying abreast of developments in this dynamic area.” Stutman’s practice has helped numerous clients from either side of the fence obtain what they legally deserve. Knowing the stress that divorce proceedings can cause was one of his motivations in putting this new book together. “If this book gives anybody a reduced level of anxiety, it’s accomplished its goal,” he explains. “Anxiety is nobody’s friend and is even less so in a divorce proceeding.” With a successful repertoire under his belt and a firm desire to not only help but also educate his clients, Michael continues to show he is the definitive New York divorce lawyer. “Divorce in New York” hits bookshelves and Amazon.com on November 1st. • 212.612.3270 mischonnewyork.com
