s I write this letter, I am days away from turning 30. While I feel a bit older (and a lot wiser!), I’m constantly thinking about ways to improve myself (weight loss, sartorial improvements, etc.). The same holds true of the way I approach the Resident. In the coming months, and partially starting in September, you will start to see a remake of the magazine. One of the things we are most proud of this month is the photos we took for our lead story, Mario Cantone. They are evocative of his personality – open, funny and thought provoking—and representative of an expressiveness and artisanship that we strive to maintain. The article, written by my assistant, Gunjan J. Sewhani, is penetrating and engaging. We think you will really like it. This being our “Fall Arts Preview,” we thought we’d turn it up a notch. We feature profiles on Cole Rumbough, an up-and-coming cabaret singer, and Roberto Bolle, one of the leading male ballet stars in the world. In addition, Michelle-Marie Heinemann (our cover girl last month) has contributed a piece on art and society; we have a roundup of exciting exhibitions and productions from many of the leading cultural institutions in the city. We also have Norah Lawlor, of the famed Lawlor Media Group, who sat down with the leading New York film critics to get a clearer picture of who the contenders are for awards in the upcoming season. It was a roller coaster of a conversation: at times, revealing of an artist’s method and at other times, downright hilarious. It’s clear that Mario Cantone is a man of the people. While his audience may be the crux of his focus, the exact demographic that he appeals to the most is hard to describe. Today, he is an openly gay man both on and off the camera. Yet, to label his audience as solely the gay population would hardly scratch the surface. He tells us of his audience at an Atlantic City show he did recently and how the audience spanned an unexpected range of ages, races, and genders. He bluntly discloses while trying to describe them: “It’s women but also a lot of men. And straight guys like me much more than gay men.” People of all ages, races, and demographics attend his shows. It’s obvious that just about everybody gets a kick out of Mario Cantone. But, how did he come to New York and became such an “it” comedian? He recounts a time during his nine-month span in Los Angeles doing stand-up comedy at the onset of his career. He says: “When I left college, I went to LA for nine months and it was just horrible. I didn’t have a car; I didn’t have an agent; I was walking up to the Comedy Store on Sunset Strip.” Today, he is best known as a comedian, impressionist and singer— he has appeared in four Broadway shows and even has done his own show in AC. Entering the American and, even, world media firmament through “Sex and the City” and “The View”, Mario has always found his place on stage by connecting with his audience on a comedic level.

After hearing tales of his adventures in the business, it seems that people approached him at every level of his career, whether he was a stand-up comedian or a man with his own show, and excitedly tugged him toward new ventures. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how he ended up in the mega-hit â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sex and the Cityâ&#x20AC;? series and both movies, by far one of his mostrecognized roles. Mario tells us: â&#x20AC;&#x153; Michael Patrick King directed most of it, [â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sex and the Cityâ&#x20AC;?]; we did stand-up together in 1983 and he always loved what I did. He called me up in the third year and said â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I want you in that part.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and it was just for that one episode. It went over so well that he just kept having me back and having me back and it ended up being 17 episodes and I also did both movies.â&#x20AC;?

When asked about the various components of his show, he has quite the laundry list for us: “ Well, it’s music-heavy. I’m slightly political but I’m not hugely political. I’m a gay man but I’ve talked about the whole thing about gay people having children and marriage and shit like that—people know I’m very Obama.” While many are shy about touching the subject of politics while in the public eye, Mario approaches it as he does all things: loudly and bluntly! An obvious advocate for gay rights himself, he married his partner of twenty years, Jerry Dixon, in October of 2011. Artistic as well, his husband is a director who is going to be making a return to Broadway shortly after having performed for the last time twenty years ago. Mario speaks fondly of his partner’s creative involvement with his work. Mario now lives in New York City with his partner. It has been thirtythree years for him here in the city. TRAVEL I am in heaven watching the experiment. Ocean science is my passion, and the best scientists in the field are at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. I follow every voyage and expedition and am glued to their website—watching their polar discovery work with cult-like fascination. The reports from the Arctic and Antarctica on marine ecosystems and sea ice have inspired my own trips to the high arctic. Some of the most creative work in oceanography is done at the idyllic seaside campus in Massachusetts—a team of geologists, physicists, marine biologists and climate experts dreams up devices to explore the deep ocean. It’s important work. According to NOAA –the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the ocean covers more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface and yet 95 percent of the underwater

world has never been explored. This is the last great frontier. I didn’t come to WHOI – the acronym for the institute – via the science lab. A few years ago I began writing a series of international adventure novels with exploration themes. Casting around for a cool profession for my female protagonist, I came up with the idea of a Woods Hole scientist who worked on the Alvin submersible. I wanted to pick a character with intellect and spunk, who had a glamorous job that was important to the future of the planet. What could convey cool confidence more than a woman who descended in a sphere the size of a Mini Cooper, traveling three miles underwater to study marine life? It turns out there is such a real person. During my research I met Susan Humphris, one of the superstars at the Institution, who helped me fine- tune my character Cordelia.
The fictional oceanographer became wildly popular with my readers, who demanded I fill in more information about her job in upcoming novels. So here I am finding out more. For such a serious research facility, WHOI is remarkably glamorous. These days the Institute is attracting the solid support of many philanthropists, including the filmmaker James Cameron, who recently donated his uber-cool deep sea diving machine to the folks at WHOI. The filmmaker made history last year by helping design a lemon-lime-colored, one-manned underwater “rocket” and riding it down into the Mariana Trench, the ocean’s deepest point. Nice. But, I’m an Alvin fan. The Wood’s Hole Submersible brings out my inner Jules Verne. The first one was built in 1964 – one of the first
TRAVEL submersibles in the world. The current version can reach 63 percent of the global ocean floor, carrying two scientists and a pilot. The vehicle has six reversible thrusters and can manoeuver over the mountain-like topography, or even rest on the bottom, cutting through the gloom with its quartz iodide and metal halide lights. Take that Captain Nemo. Best of all, the vehicle has video capacity and can transfer its images topside for the world to see. It is truly one of the most splendid things I have seen. Back on the Research Vessel Tioga, the REMUS 100 has hit a snag. A ruggedized computer in the pilothouse of the ship is showing a grid pockmarked with squares of red. Those bright patches tell Amy Kukulya that water is coming in at a few places in the device. The mission has to be aborted to check out if the signals are correct. It seems that seawater and electronics don’t mix.
While the REMUS is recalled, Amy explains the latest fun they’ve had with the REMUS technology. And what fun it is! Tapped by the Discovery Chanel for their famous “Shark Week” programs, the REMUS was fitted out by WHOI with a special “shark cam” to follow great whites. The idea of a shark camera had been under development at WHOI since 2008. It’s very complicated stuff to program a device to track the random wanderings of such a wild animal. The first open water tests for the great white projects had all the elements of comedy. A scientist in a wet suit and wearing a transponder would play an advanced game of Marco Polo with the REMUS, responding electronically each time the devise sent out an electronic inquiry. Computer algorithms had to be calculated and recalculated to keep the REMUS on track—not too high in the water, or too close to the ocean floor, able to follow a swiftly mving target. A very delicate balance
must be found—that takes some serious math! Back on the Tioga the REMUS is hauled dripping onto the deck. Amy Kukulya smiles and says, “There goes the weekend.” They will haul the REMUS 100 back into the lab to find out what ails it. That’s the non-glamorous side of the field: the long, frustrating hours of try, try, try again. Yet, it is amazing to see it all come to fruition. I am once again struck by the tenacity and intelligence of this remarkable group of geniuses. They dream big. LAOS All My Souls My French colonial house on the Aman resort is all elegance with long French windows and hand woven fabrics of silk, cotton and gold. In the back garden my private swimming pool is filled with vermillion rose petals and water that’s Ah! The temperature of my skin. Laos, at the confluence of the Nam Kahn and Mekong rivers is an unspoiled landscape of cloud-topped mountains rooted in the river’s rice and vegetable patties and a plethora of kind elephants half wild half tame. I’ve never been bare back on an elephant particularly in the middle of the Kahn River so I’m feeling very brave on Maya, my elephant before we emerge into the teak forest where she decides to randomly up root saplings and I realize I have absolutely no control. That evening we dine at L’Eléphant a stylish French bistro featuring escargots wrapped in lotus leaves, and where else? -coq au vent. An exquisitely maintained 1970 white Lincoln Continental -the gift from the United States government to Savang Vatthana the last king of the country is parked by the front door. The next morning it’s Yoga and a visit to the living temples that have made Luan Phrabang a World Heritage Site. Anyone can become a monk as long as he wishes, his life, food and education are free. Spirituality is a core of this country, which has not changed many of its ways since 580 BC Buddha’s last reincarnation. A sail down the spectacular Mekong in a carved teak barge reveals minuscule towns edging the water where farming; fishing, and fowl: hens, roosters and peacocks coexist with naked brown babies playing in the dirt amidst wooden houses on stilts as the adults work at the specialty of the town. In one it was rice cakes, in the next hand weaving with silk, cotton and gold. (A scarf is $5.) The last town was the richest with a television disk for every house - but that was because it made rice whiskey. The last day is my favorite ceremony: Baci -for the thirty-nine organs in my body. Each one is believed to have its own soul. I sit on the floor surrounded by four Elders who begin chanting for my souls to return to my organs. I will be whole. Two strings are tied to each of my wrists and must remain for exactly three days. I am very happy because now, since my visit to Laos, I have all my souls. •

he Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park is a special hotel tucked away down on the southern tip of the Big Apple. My brief but thoroughly enjoyable visit here reminded me of how much this city has to offer and made me wonder why I hadn’t sought out this hotel sooner. Nearly half of their 298 guest rooms offer exquisite views of the harbor with the iconic Statue of Liberty occupying center stage. In-room telescopes provide up close and personal views of the lovely Lady, perfectly positioned directly on her for your first lookthrough. The contemporary furnishings and decor of the hotel are characteristically Ritz Carlton along with their always-attentive service and immaculate accommodations. The fitness center is more than adequate for a hotel of this size and their fine dining restaurant, 2West, located in hotel lobby serves American cuisine in a friendly and welcoming vibe. What I found particularly stellar was their Club Lounge serving light bites for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. And since the hotel caters to a business crowd, my weekend escape meant I had the lounge almost completely to myself each time I visited.

Resident: Could you tell us a little about your work? Rumbough: I love to sing the Great American Songbook. That means Cole Porter, Gershwin, Rodgers & Hart, Sammy Cahn & Jimmy Van Heusen, Irving Berlin, etc. I like traditional big band and swing. The style I love is cabaret, which is a very specific nicheâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a cross between jazz and Broadway, because many of the songs these composers wrote were originally written for shows and they can be a bit too much on the theatrical side. I love performing love songs in an intimate room and making that couple in the far, dark corner of the room fall more in love with each other than they already were. Resident: Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beautiful. So do you consider yourself a romantic? Rumbough: Yes, I definitely consider myself a romantic. I want every aspect of my life to be romantic. In fact, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why I love jazz music so much. To me, it resembles the feeling of being in love. Resident: What was your most recent performance? Rumbough: My most recent performance was a more casual, laid back one. I was a guest performer at the Rams Head Inn on Shelter Island, NY on August 11th. I performed with my dear friends, Peter & Jane, who are a husband and wife team on Bass & Piano I play a lot with, in and around the Hamptons. Some friends of ours joined in on drums, saxophone, and trumpet. It was a lot of fun! Resident: What are some of your musical influences? Rumbough: My favorites are Ella Fitzgerald, Vic Damone, Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Christine Andreas and Marilyn Maye. But I also love Nat King Cole, Stan Getz, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Doris Day, Judy Garland, Mel Torme, Billie Holiday, & Sarah Vaughan. I could go on forever but I mainly listen to jazz and classical. I enjoy some of the new acoustic singer/songwriter artists as well. Resident: What has been your favorite performance to date? Rumbough: My favorite performance of my own was at The International Red Cross Ball at The Breakers in Palm Beach this past February. I sang with the Peter Duchin band and it was a very special opportunity to be able to sing a tribute to my grandmother,
Dina Merrill, who was the honoree of the evening. This is my favorite to date, but I have a feeling the best is yet to come! Resident: Do you have any role models within the music industry? Anyone whose career you really admire? Rumbough: I really admire Barbra Streisandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s career. She is absolutely amazing. I can relate to her as a perfectionist but I also think her strategy is brilliant. Maybe itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s her strategy or maybe just her stage fright but I think that because she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t perform all that often, tickets to hear her are all the more desirable.Â
New York history on my other side of the family includes The Woolworth building, the tallest skyscraper in the world at the time, which my great-great-great uncle, F.W. Woolworth built for his five-and-ten-cent empire. Then of course, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my greatgrandfather, E.F. Huttonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famous career, which began on Wall Street. With so much family history all around me, I feel like I belong here! With all the jazz clubs in town, what better place for me to live? â&#x20AC;˘
I also love Ella Fitzgeraldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s career. I have almost every single one of her albums. I am so grateful that she recorded so much so that we have all of her recorded music to enjoy forever. She recorded over 2,000 songs! And I love almost all of them. With most artists, I am more selectiveâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;I like some of their stuff but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like others. But with Ella, I can safely say I love just about everything she did. She was consistently amazing throughout her successful career spanning six decades. Resident: Our readers are local New Yorkers so we must askâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;what do you feel makes you a New Yorker? Rumbough: Well, for starters, I was born in .BOIBUUBO PO +BOVBSZ BU .PVOU Sinai hospital and lived here for the first few years of my life. Although I grew up spending most of my time between Greenwich and the Hamptons, I always came back into the city for dinners and Broadway shows. ou may not know the name Santo Loquasto, but you have most likely have seen his work. Loquasto has designed scenery and costumes for some of the biggest names in the business, and his skill sets ranges from classical ballet to Broadway, and from live theater to film--with a healthy dash of opera tossed into the mix. I met with Loquasto on NVHHZ "VHVTU EBZ BU UIF .BSHPU 1BUJTTFSJF PO th Street. A modest man with a dapper beard and killer smile, he sips an iced coffee while we talk; every now and then, he flashes that dazzling smile. A native of Pennsylvania, Loquasto traces his interest in theater back to his youth, when he was, by his own description, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;classic summer stock kid.â&#x20AC;? He first worked with scenery, though costumes, he said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;were always a part of it.â&#x20AC;? He graduated from Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s $PMMFHF B TNBMM $BUIPMJD TDIPPM JO 8JMLFT #BSSF BOE GSPN IF BUUFOEFE UIF Yale School of Drama. After graduating, he did not go straight to New York but worked in SFHJPOBM UIFBUFS JO UIF /FX )BWFO BSFB "SSJWJOH JO /FX :PSL $JUZ JO XBT B TFSJPVT thrill and now Loquasto makes his home on the Upper West Side. In his ongoing work for American Ballet Theater, he has collaborated with several of the danceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s world most notable directors including Twyla Tharp, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Kenneth MacMillan, Agnes de Mille and Mark Morris. This fall, Loquastoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s costumes and sets for the world premiere of The Tempest by Alexei Ratmansky will highlight American Ballet Theatreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inaugural fall season in New York. In many ways, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a perfect fit. With his strong theatrical background, Loquasto is well grounded in Shakespeare and has designed costumes for Joseph Pappâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s productions of Shakespeare in the Park as well as productions of Shakespeare at other venues. But designing costumes for the ballet requires some special considerations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want the dancers to be fighting the weight of the dresses,â&#x20AC;? he explains. How does he help translate the Bardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s immortal words into an equally compelling, if wordless, spectacle? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I follow the play,â&#x20AC;? he says, adding that it is his aim to follow the progression sequentially and where words, or their kinetic translation is not applicable, he relies on pure emotion, like anger and rage. But Loquasto is also eager to balance the intensity of such feelings with lighter, comedic notes, in this case embodied by characters like Trinculo and Stephano. And he is confident in his material: â&#x20AC;&#x153;To design Shakespeare teaches you how little you need on stage.â&#x20AC;? Loquastoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s film credits include twenty-seven films with quintessential New York director Woody Allen. The first of these collaborations was in 1980, when he worked on Stardust Memories, and the most recent was Blue Jasmine. Speaking of the relationship with Allen, he says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s almost incomprehensible how it happened and how it endured,â&#x20AC;? says Loquasto. The â&#x20AC;&#x153;how-it- happenedâ&#x20AC;? came through an early association with screenwriter Marshall Brickman; the enduring part has to do with Loquastoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nuanced understanding of the way things need to look. When asked what he likes best about his job, he quickly answers, â&#x20AC;&#x153;the beginning, the search, the figuring out how you are going to do it.â&#x20AC;? What he likes least is the bottom-line, business aspects of trying to create the vision he wants within the budget that has been allocated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The haggling wears you out,â&#x20AC;? he notes. But Loquasto seems anything but worn out. He is filled with ideas that he continually strives to bring to visual fruition. When he sees the performers getting excited he gets excited too. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all very exhilarating,â&#x20AC;? he saysâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and once more, I am treated to that wonderful, life-affirming smile. â&#x20AC;˘

An International Ballet Superstar By Joe Alexander
caught up with ballet’s sexiest superstar Roberto Bolle while he was on a boat off Capri in his native Italy. The critically acclaimed dancer, who lives between Milano and NYC, is bringing his show “Roberto Bolle & Friends” to City Center for a one-night gala on September 17th. Bolle, who started these shows 13 years ago in Europe, said he was inspired by “Pavarotti & Friends” and hopes that he can expand the audience for ballet the way The Three Tenors helped to popularize opera. “It is the first time I’m bringing my gala to NYC and I’m really happy about that,” said Bolle, who has been a Principal Dancer at American Ballet Theatre since 2009 and has held the title of Etoile of La Scala Theatre for a decade.

I will retire earlier. At that age, I may be a director of a company, maybe in La Scala. I would like to use the knowledge and experience I have to be a director. ow fabulous to live in New York City.” This is what my dear friend who lives in Monte Carlo tells me every time we chat... and I could not agree more, because daily there is always something new and ever so current happening. As an artist I thrive on the exotic and ability to think outside the box concerning most matters and most of my friends have this “gene” shall we call it. One such friend is the designer Maggie Norris. I have known Maggie for over a decade and remember vividly the first time I visited her atelier to seek a commission for her extraordinary Couture bustier masterpieces. The wonderful thing about Maggie, aside from her ability to create Museum quality clothing is that she is a true artist. Her designs are sewn, embroidered and beaded completely by hand. These are the types of treasures, like fine jewelry, that can be passed down from generation to generation. New York Fashion Week is right around the corner and I plan on being front and center, awaiting the new arrivals. My dear friend, Paola Bacchini Rosenshein is hosting a luncheon at her Penthouse celebrating Yue-Sai Khan and her upcoming event: China Fashion Night Gala honoring Vivienne Tam benefiting the Fashion Institute of Technology, this will be next week so I look forward to this. The Fashion Institute of Technology, usually referred to as FIT, is a State University of New York ( SUNY ) college of art, business,

design, and technology connected to the fashion Industry. The last time I was there I saw the Daphne Guinness exhibit. It was absolutely amazing and featured her personal collection of clothes, and movie Lady White Snake. It showcased several of her pieces designed by Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Nina Ricci and others. Chanel is always my favorite and I have been a long standing client forever. Jane Maymen always takes such good care of me at the 57th street boutique and always has the most wonderful personality. My children gave me a beautiful Chanel J12 Chromatic watch for Mother’s Day, and I must say, I love it. Not only does it keep perfect time but it is the perfect “Mommy” watch. I am fascinated with the origin of timekeeping devices and have collected hourglasses ever since I was a little girl. The Egyptians used large obelisks to track the movement of the sun, they also developed water clocks which functioned similar to a hourglass. The oldest known surviving hourglass resides in the British Museum in London. This is a fabulous Museum on Great Russell street that has exciting activities for the entire family. ‘I am very tiny - only 5’ and weigh 88 lbs. I’ve recently discovered a new place to shop. The children’s department! This has opened up whole new fashion vistas for me. One day I was in Saks going up the escalator, browsing on each floor, when I got off in the children’s department. I was about to leave, thinking, this is not for me, when I spied a skirt that seemed rather large. I decided to take more careful note of the clothes. I’ve since found many terrific buys. You can find designer names at a fraction of what those same designer clothes would cost in other departments. I’ve bough a pair of Ralph Lauren summer pants that didn’t need shortening. I’ve also bought a beautiful black velvet sleeveless shell that’s a size 16 and fits me perfectly. Actually, a children’s size 14 or 16 fits me well. I’ve also bought a number of dresses in the children’s department. Admittedly, they are a little short-waisted on me but I can’t decide if they really are that on my adult figure or just the Empire style. Either way, they’re very flattering. Which brings me to another point. Children don’t dress like children anymore. They dress like little adults which is great for us “little adults.” With a careful eye it’s amazing what you can find. Just steer clear of anything too frilly or girly. So many children’s clothes today are really so chic and simple that it’s impossible to tell whether they’re for children or adults. So indulge your inner fashionista with a designer number you picked up in the children’s department and when you’re asked where you got it, just smile and keep mum. •

Not Just For Kids: Back to School Means Parents, Too By Peter Bencivenga The phrase “back to school” for NYC parents means much more than it used to. As a parent of two NYC public school children, I know school communities are no strangers to big change. Some can be good, (like increased funding for after-school activities) some can be devastating (seventeen NYC schools have been shut down this year) and some can just be just plain strange (like fruit-filled vending machines). But for most of us, “back to school” evokes nothing but feelings of confusion: What are the common core standards and the new graduation requirements? What are the new attendance policies? How have schools revamped teacher evaluations? Long gone are the days of “back to school” where the stress was simply what backpack or pencil box your child needed. There is, thankfully, a remedy to the confusion for NYC parents: Be in touch with your school community. After teaching in the NYC public school system for sixteen years, I noticed schools with the right online student data systems consistently had a leg-up when it came to keeping parents in the know: not just for the obvious benefit of a parent being more closely involved in their child’s education, but

for the benefit of the entire school community. For a school to be successful, it is an absolute necessity to have strong parent communication and involvement. I am now the co-founder of a technology company that provides online services to over 400 NYC schools. My company, CaseNEX, is made up of former NYC educators and current NYC parents like myself. Creating better parent communication through successful online student data systems became a problem we set out to solve. Could we create a well-functioning, easy-to-use system that resulted in positive parent interaction? Would students accessing the system find themselves motivated, knowing teachers and parents were monitoring their progress? Our products, Skedula and Pupilpath, answered these questions with a resounding yes. As the new school year approaches, I encourage parents to keep in constant communication with their school communities in order to stay on top of their child’s progress. This school year, more and more schools are taking charge by providing parents with easy-touse data systems like PupilPath and Skedula. A PARENT’S A – B –ByCDr.GUIDE FOR BACK TO SCHOOL Joe Taravella It’s that time of year when families embark upon another back to school season. As you cross off your checklist of new clothes and school supplies in preparation for a new learning adventure, are you and your child emotionally ready for this separation? Here are a few tips for a smooth transition into an exciting year of growth and learning for you and your child. A – Always be aware of your emotions. Stay calm and check your emotions at the front door. The start of school can be a scary or an exciting step in your child’s development. However, it may elicit a plethora of emotions in parents, from enthusiasm to fear. Check in with yourself regularly and be mindful of what you are feeling and what it may stem from. Are your own back to school memories pleasant or were you the kid clutched to your parents’ leg screaming to not let go? Model a positive attitude for your child. B – Bring a personal item from home. A transitional object from early childhood to toddlerhood (i.e., family picture, small stuffed animal, or keepsake) will keep your child feeling connected to you throughout the day and remind them of the security of home and family. It also provides them with a sense that

you are thinking of them even though you are apart. C – Communicate! Create a “safe spot” in your home (i.e., room, sofa, bed) where children feel safe communicating their thoughts and feelings with you. Start having discussions about school early in the summer rather than waiting until the night or week before. A perfect time for this is while you are shopping for school supplies. Share with them your back to school stories. Let them know it’s ok to be nervous and that their feelings are legitimate. Children are only able to rely upon their fantasy of what they think school is going to be like or what they hear from others. Providing a comfortable forum to communicate at home will facilitate better communication with their teacher. D – Don’t linger at drop-off. One of the biggest mistakes parents make is staying at school any longer than the teacher needs. Your children’s loyalty and trust has always been with you, and now you’re putting them in the hands of a new adult. They need to negotiate how to divide their loyalty, which maybe uneasy for them, but remember it is necessary for them to learn independence; so a quick and speedy transition is best.
E – Easy access to supplies and clothes. Make certain they are capable of taking care of their belongings with ease in an effort to foster their independence and self-control. If your child has trouble buttoning their pants, have them wear pants with an elastic waist, so they don’t have trouble in the bathroom. â&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve just come back from the Gamescom show in Germany. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest gaming show and anyone who is looking at how to build trade show booths should go to this event to see the amazing displays. As a result, gaming is on the forefront of my mind, and of course is hugely popular with teens.  In looking at all of these games, it just made me realize just how much gaming had changed since I was sticking 10 pence in a Galaga machine.  For example, there is a game called Habbo Hotel that is the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest social game and online community for teenagers (90% of Habbo users are between 13-18 years old), with over 290 million registered characters to date in 150 countries. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s incredible to think that so many people could be interacting simultaneously and building their personas in an online virtual environment.  Online gaming is a category of spending which surely is completely defined as disposable income.  But while the quality and availability have changed many of the basic gaming themes are still there and generation after generation choose to spend their disposable income on gaming. Like all things in life - some people go overboard - but most of us play games in moderation.  A few minutes here and there. For many teenagers with more time on their hands - they can
spend more time on gaming and when they do they can find a wide variety of games of various levels of quality. Most modern games are choosing to monetize (get paid for) their games using virtual goods. Controlling Your
Dog’s Scent Marking By Victoria Stilwell
positively.com cent marking is a very normal and common behavior particularly in male dogs but becomes a big problem when marking occurs in the home. Dogs mark to advertise their presence or to claim territory and resources. Pheromones in urine and feces contain chemical messages that pass on information about the marker such as age, sex, health and reproductive status. Even though urination has a competitive component, it can also occur if a dog is over stimulated, for example, during or after vigorous play, or if a dog becomes anxious in a particular situation, such as when a person leaves. This common expression of anxiety in dogs is often mistaken for spite, resulting in punishment which only serves to increase anxious behavior. Both sexes scent mark but entire males are the worst offenders as signaling sexual availability and claiming territory is ‘encouraged’ by the presence of testosterone. In many cases neutering can significantly reduce the desire to scent mark, but some dogs continue even after they have been neutered. Resources such as toys, food bowls, chew treats, bones and beds are the most likely objects to be marked and in some cases a dog will actually mark a person or something that smells heavily of that person such as a sofa or bed.

Scent marking is more common in multi-dog households where dogs compete for space, resources and human attention and even though this is a difficult behavior to work with, progress can be made by taking the following steps. Remove high value resources that encourage competitive marking and do not allow the dog or dogs that scent mark to roam free around the home. Take the dogs to a dog -proofed room or crate when you are unable to actively supervise them in order to prevent access to favorite marking spots. Avoid competitive or vigorous play indoors as excess activity encourages urination and if a dog is about to mark, interrupt the behavior with a short vocal noise and immediately direct the dog onto something more positive or take him outside. Help a marking dog succeed by taking him to new and different areas on walks. This will encourage him to mark outside rather than in the home. Teaching older dogs that are not housebroken to toilet appropriately can also be a challenge. Most dogs raised in a normal domestic situation respond well to a good toileting schedule, but those that have lived in puppy mills are notoriously difficult to teach. Dogs are essentially clean animals and do not like to toilet where they sleep and eat, but because of cramped conditions, puppy mill dogs are forced to do just that. Transitioning into a home is therefore problematic and makes crate training, a usually successfully way to toilet train a dog, much less effective. However even puppy mill dogs can be taught to toilet appropriately with a good schedule that relies on going back to basics and allowing access to outside areas every hour and then gradually building up to less frequent trips as the dog builds up control. Following a schedule builds up a ritual of behavior that eventually becomes predictable and reliable. Every dog needs to feel confident about toileting and punishing accidents will only scare the dog into finding ways of toileting in secret. Human patience and sensitivity is the key to success. •

The Driver’s Seat Restaurant: A True Southampton Staple By Nalini Leilani he Driver’s Seat Restaurant is the restaurant that every town needs; it is an American classic that has over the years become a Southampton classic. And it is easy to see why—the eatery is casual and perfect for virtually any dining occasion. Sitting on the outdoor patio brought us an opportunity to people watch as well as enjoy the light summer breeze. The inside of the restaurant features a décor that is as timeless as it is cozy with simple white walls and elegantly casual furniture. The menu is an amalgamation of casual American favorites spotted with zestier dishes such as a Caribbean Jerk Chicken Wrap that was smothered in an aromatic spice—perfection next to the pulpier pineapple red pepper relish. But mostly we favored the more traditional dishes—and what is more classic on a warm summer night in Southampton than orders of fish and chips, a lobster roll, and shrimp

cocktail? The seafood was notably fresh in all of these dishes—the locally caught flounder filets were breaded to a gleamingly rich golden color and the roll highlighted succulent chunks of lobster meat. Quiche, a grossly understated specialty, was lovely here: the broccoli cheddar quiche we opted for was rich, flaky and oozing with flavor. The shrimp was both incredibly large and tender. Other seafood specialties on the menu include jumbo lump crab cakes, a flounder sandwich, and shrimp in a basket. The menu also boasts an assortment of items from the grill that are reminiscent of an oldschool diner: a simple chicken breast, an eightounce beef burger, a bun-less burger, and a veggie burger cover options for every palette. The Driver’s Seat Sweet Spinach Salad was fresh and the sautéed peaches were an unusual, but welcome, addition to a typical mix of greens— spattered with candied pecans, this salad was just one example of a classic done effortlessly well. The French Bean and Artichoke Salad
was a joyful mix of fresh greens and lentils that accompanied our otherwise indulgent meal wonderfully. The eatery has a rich history pertinent to the evolution of Southampton itself. Today, local and visiting patrons alike can dine in the front bar room that was originally erected in 1888 as a produce store. After a short delay, New York City’s first modular apartment building has finally taken shape as the last of the modules were delivered to the construction site in Inwood, New York. The Stack, located at 4857 Broadway, was supposed to be erected in April and completed by July. The project was delayed when the Department of Buildings asked to re-review the permits. “It’s so new, nothing like this has been done before in Manhattan,” said developer Jeffrey M. Brown, adding that the DOB just wanted to make sure all the details were solid. They were, and now, by Fall 2013, residents will be able to move into the modern, pre-fabricated building whose units boast high ceilings, stainless steel appliances and custom kitchens. Brown and co-developer Kim Frank have contracted Douglas Elliman Development to introduce The Stack to the New York City rental market. Leasing will begin in Fall 2013, however, interested parties can register to be added to the real estate company’s priority preview list online at www.thestacknyc.com. The Stack features studio, one, two and three bedroom apartments for rent in the heart of Inwood, the northernmost neighborhood on the island of Manhattan. A short walk from the plush greenery of both Inwood Hill Park and Fort Tryon Park, as well as The Cloisters and historic Dykman House, The Stack is just minutes from Manhattan Transit Authority service 1 and A subways and offers easy access
to the Henry Hudson Parkway, Harlem River Drive and Major Deegan Expressway. The Stack apartments are designed with both elegance and durability in mind, featuring stained concrete floors, high performance aluminum windows and tenant controlled heat and air conditioning. Kitchens feature solid surface Corian countertops with undermount stainless steel sinks, maple cabinetry with stainless steel pulls, GE stainless steel appliances and WaterSense fixtures, while bathrooms offer contemporary vanities with storage and mosaic tiled walls. Upon entering The Stack, residents will be greeted with a special concept of a virtual doorman for ensured safety. The 38,000-square-foot concrete and steel residential and retail building is the first of its kind to be built in New York City and was manufactured entirely off-site by DeLuxe Building Systems in Berwick, Pennsylvania. It was shipped to New York City in the form of 56 separate modules that now comprise the seven-story complex of 28 individual apartments with 4,000-square-feet of retail and commercial space on the first floor. An added bonus to the Stack is the art installation-like process that captivated the neighborhood. Every day four new modules were fitted into place and the building took shape before residents’ eyes.
“The neighbors were watching from the sidewalk, the kids were watching from the school across the street and people were watching from cars,” said Brown. “In the first ten days we put together five out of seven floors, all of which were erected by an eightman construction crew and a single crane.” Now that the 56 prefabricated modules (all constructed by hand off-site in a controlled environment) are set in place, move-in time will come quickly. A small team is now combing The Stack, connecting utilities and adding finishing touches, while a façade is affixed to the side of the building. In developing The Stack, Brown and Frank worked hand-in-hand with architect Gluck+ to design the building, explore the options and look at modular manufacturers. The $13 million dollar project is poised to redefine public perception of modular construction, by proving greater efficiency for on-site integration and unit quality control that will not only produce a more premium end product, but will also in turn lead to a boost in affordable housing in New York City.
