What did we learn from the last Storm of the Century that we can apply to the next one? Every time we turn around, there seems to be another Storm of the Century. So we’re spending over $1 billion over the next four years on storm-protection improvements. We’re building higher flood barriers. We’re investing in utility poles that can withstand 110 mph wind gusts. And we’re installing submersible electrical equipment in flood-prone areas. We’re also doing more to keep you informed during severe weather. Check our outage map, report a power problem, get a restoration estimate and find storm safety tips at conEd.com and follow us on Facebook or Twitter.

s I write this letter, I am days away from turning 30. While I feel a bit older (and a lot wiser!), I’m constantly thinking about ways to improve myself (weight loss, sartorial improvements, etc.). The same holds true of the way I approach the Resident. In the coming months, and partially starting in September, you will start to see a remake of the magazine. One of the things we are most proud of this month is the photos we took for our lead story, Mario Cantone. They are evocative of his personality – open, funny and thought provoking—and representative of an expressiveness and artisanship that we strive to maintain. The article, written by my assistant, Gunjan J. Sewhani, is penetrating and engaging. We think you will really like it. This being our “Fall Arts Preview,” we thought we’d turn it up a notch. We feature profiles on Cole Rumbough, an up-and-coming cabaret singer, and Roberto Bolle, one of the leading male ballet stars in the world. In addition, Michelle-Marie Heinemann (our cover girl last month) has contributed a piece on art and society; we have a roundup of exciting exhibitions and productions from many of the leading cultural institutions in the city. We also have Norah Lawlor, of the famed Lawlor Media Group, who sat down with the leading New York film critics to get a clearer picture of who the contenders are for awards in the upcoming season. I’m also proud to announce the addition of two famed gossip

columnists to the Resident ranks. George Wayne of Vanity Fair, whose questionnaire has become the stuff of legend, was so impressed by Resident that he approached us to contribute. Who was I to turn him down? We also have Flo Anthony, one of the gossip mavens of the city; her piece “Big Apple Buzz “ is a welcomed addition. Our real estate section is coming alive! From interior design to the latest trends in the city, we’ve got it covered. The same should also be said of our travel section. This month Kitty Pilgrim goes on a voyage to the Woods Hole Oceanographic and we explore the Dominican Republic, the west coast of Florida and Atlantic City. I want to thank our readers for their devotion to the magazine and for taking the ride with us. We’ve made amazing strides, but are never satisfied with status quo; we are waiting, willing and wanting to be better! And it’s my mission for us to be so. •

As “the new season” finally unfurls in all its glory, it is never too late to primp and prepare and reemerge fresh and vital for the glamorous galas, premieres and fashion shows that reignite every September in our glorious New York City. With that mantra in mind, yours truly, made the first stop to the legendary, yet unassuming, temple of beauty and rejuvenation: the Mario Badescu Skin Care Center at 320 East 52nd Street. One little known secret is that Mario Badescu is a must-visit every season for famous beauties such as Naomi Campbell, Kirsten Dunst, Allegra Versace, Milla Jovovich and Helena Christiansen who, of course, all realize that to be fearless and flawless nothing can rival a visit to this equally-famous temple of beauty rejuvenation. Any astute lady worth her salt

knows that Badescu is one of those old school beauty emporiums that has been valued and revered by many in this city since 1967. And because of GW’s aversion to needles, the idea of a quick nip and tuck involves nothing more than a 45-minute facial under the expert care of one of their leading aestheticians, Irina from Croatia. Note to my girls – she is GW’s personal favorite. I never leave that shop without stocking up on Mario Badescu lifesavers such as the Almond & Honey Abrasive Face Scrub, and their incredible Botanical Facial Gel or the Cucumber Cream Soap and the Buttermilk Moisturizer, which works wonders! Not to mention their priceless chalice of special oils; their incredible Mario Badescu Vitamin C Serum is liquid gold.

Giselle is the face of BLK DNM this season, the fabulous black and white ads will be in every glossy magazine. The campaign was also shot by the Swedish designer himself. ‘’I photographed Giselle completely fresh faced, he offered, ‘’no makeup whatsoever, and doesn’t she look amazing?’’ Indeed, she did. And when did you decide to add fashion photographer to your resume? This enquiring mind wanted to know. ‘’I started shooting about four years ago before that I had never held a camera in my life. Now I find that I can’t put the camera down. I find this an incredible new way of expressing my mood and feeling.’’

This September 2013, the Mario Badescu Peptide Renewal Cream and Serum at $43 per 1oz is well worth the investment. This latest confection combines peptides and youth-boosting botanicals. The company’s VP, Simon Abadi, declares the serum ‘’is our latest winner, created to renew and effectively improve the characteristics of aging skin, specifically wrinkles, sagging, uneven texture and dehydration.’’

Beauty is skin deep, as the adage goes, and there is never a shortage of emerging beauty consultants with quick fixes. One new talent in this field, Cygalle Dias, founder and CEO of Cygalle Healing Spa, will be the first to tell you that for her it is all “about the sensory journey.” And to accomplish that she suggests embracing her own line of holistic beauty products such as her best-selling Licorice Spice Face Wash and Anti-Oxidant Cranberry Toner which the likes of fashion maven Stella McCartney and other Hollywood types such as Kate Hudson and Rosario Dawson swear by. Ms. Dias’ six-year-old brand, which she insists utilizes only certified organic, freshly made ingredients. She declares: ‘’The spa has been an integral part of culture since the days of soaking in hot springs and natural salt water baths hundred of years ago. Today I have sought to reinvent that experience through my millennial beauty products which capture the essence of luxurious restoration.” Okay girlfriend. She too, has launched a brand new product for the season: her True Holistic Gold Leaf Intensive Eye Treatment addresses the special needs of the eye zone and is fortified with organic marshmallow extract along with 23 karat micronized minerals. Her website cygallehealingspa.com is today’s onestop-shop for this diva’s 21st century beauty essentials.

GW ended this particular evening out and about with dinner at this chic new boite at 76 Orchard Street called Spur Tree. It’s one of downtown’s best kept secrets. This tiny hole in the wall of a restaurant where restaurant impresario Sean John welcomes the likes of yes, that Naomi Campbell again, and folk like Harry Connick and Alec Baldwin who cant get enough of imported lobster from Nova Scotia which is jerk-grilled Jamaica style and served over the most delicious micro-organic mix of greens on the planet. ‘’I scour the planet for the best ingredients,’’ the impresario insists. Besides the lobster, the organic lamb chops sourced from New Zealand and the freerange duck are also recommended. Sit and sip ginger melon mojitos while listening to classic reggae music from the Japanese-imported DJ and share a toast to ‘the new season’.... And I will be in touch. •

Needless to say, after my day at the spa, I was feeling flawless and empowered and as such it didn’t take much coaxing to immediately rush to greet and meet the richest supermodel on the planet, Giselle Bundchen, two days later at the BLK DNM store in Nolita where she recently hosted a sweet cocktail party. eponymous reigning queen of beauty was completely make-up free that late afternoon in Noho, looking fresh as a daisy as she warmly welcomed her fan club to help celebrate yet another fabulous advertising campaign --this of course, for the uber-cool denim brand launched by Johan Lindenberg some eight years ago.

It was a roller coaster of a conversation: at times, revealing of an artist’s method and at other times, downright hilarious. It’s clear that Mario Cantone is a man of the people. While his audience may be the crux of his focus, the exact demographic that he appeals to the most is hard to describe. Today, he is an openly gay man both on and off the camera. Yet, to label his audience as solely the gay population would hardly scratch the surface. He tells us of his audience at an Atlantic City show he did recently and how the audience spanned an unexpected range of ages, races, and genders. He bluntly discloses while trying to describe them: “It’s women but also a lot of men. And straight guys like me much more than gay men.” People of all ages, races, and demographics attend his shows. It’s obvious that just about everybody gets a kick out of Mario Cantone. But, how did he come to New York and became such an “it” comedian? He recounts a time during his nine-month span in Los Angeles doing stand-up comedy at the onset of his career. He says: “When I left college, I went to LA for nine months and it was just horrible. I didn’t have a car; I didn’t have an agent; I was walking up to the Comedy Store on Sunset Strip.” Today, he is best known as a comedian, impressionist and singer— he has appeared in four Broadway shows and even has done his own show in AC. Entering the American and, even, world media firmament through “Sex and the City” and “The View”, Mario has always found his place on stage by connecting with his audience on a comedic level.

“I just don’t want to live anywhere else.” And for Mario, this is more than just a convenience thing or a love of the skyline. It is in New York that Mario’s art is most deeply understood.

Similarly, it was his long relationship with Joy Behar that brought him to “The View, one of the longest running national daytime talk shows in the United States. When asked about his time on “The View, he says, “ I knew her [Joy Behar] ten years ago and she got me on “The View a couple times and her executive producer really liked me and they just kept having me back. I’ve co-hosted, I’ve been the lead guest, I’ve been the second guest, I’ve done comedy segments, I’ve done commercials, music numbers—I’ve done everything on that show.

One of Mario’s most famous impressions is that of the iconic Liza Minnelli. His longtime relationship with Minnelli began at his first #SPBEXBZ TIPX JO )F UFMMT VT iɨF EJSFDUPS XBT MJLF A$PNF to Joe Allen’s, Liza Minnelli is there and I want you to meet her.’ and I met her and two weeks later she came to see me at Caroline’s and I was being managed by the same guy that she was and we hung out afterwards. His subsequent, and delicate, relationship with Liza Minnelli is telling of an artist’s sensitivities and true passions. Mario thoroughly enjoyed doing impressions of Minnelli and had to teeter a delicate line in his impressions of her dynamic with her mother, Judy Garland. He tells us of their relationship: “Judy’s a funny, funny person and she has her opinions and that’s why that conversation between her and Liza about the singers of today is kind of what I want to get across. It’s all I want to do. It’s all the portrayal of it that’s cutting and a little deep.â€? Mario’s magnetism and people skills seem to have been the driving force behind his career. He speaks of hosts, Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg, and executive producer, Bill Geddie, of “The Viewâ€? as if they are family: “ I just hosted Joy’s last show which was great. Whoopi grounds the show a lot and Joy was there forever; I’m really upset she’s gone because I love her on the show. Bill Geddie just really gets it. There’s another straight man that I really like--and a Republican on top of it, how ironic is that!â€?

One of Mario’s most famous impressions is that of the iconic Liza Minnelli. His longtime relationship with Minnelli began at his first Broadway show in 1995. He tells us: “The director was like, ‘Come to Joe Allen’s, Liza Minnelli is there and I want you to meet her. and I met her and two weeks later she came to see me at Caroline’s and I was being managed by the same guy that she was and we hung out afterwards. After hearing tales of his adventures in the business, it seems that people approached him at every level of his career, whether he was a stand-up comedian or a man with his own show, and excitedly tugged him toward new ventures. That’s how he ended up in the mega-hit “Sex and the City series and both movies, by far one of his mostrecognized roles. Mario tells us: “ Michael Patrick King directed most of it, [“Sex and the City]; we did stand-up together in 1983 and he always loved what I did. He called me up in the third year and said ‘I want you in that part.’ and it was just for that one episode. It went over so well that he just kept having me back and having me back and it ended up being 17 episodes and I also did both movies.

While these are the roles that Mario is most known for, his shows are far more varied. When asked about the various components of his show, he has quite the laundry list for us: “ Well, it’s music-heavy. There’s musical numbers that my husband has written for some of the impressions that I do and I also sing as myself and do impressions and talk about what I want to talk about—sometimes pop culture. I’m slightly political but I’m not hugely political. I’m a gay man but I’ve talked about the whole thing about gay people having children and marriage and shit like that—people know I’m very Obama.” While many are shy about touching the subject of politics while in the public eye, Mario approaches it as he does all things: loudly and bluntly! An obvious advocate for gay rights himself, he married his partner of twenty years, Jerry Dixon, in October of 2011. Artistic as well, his husband is a director who is going to be making a return to Broadway shortly after having performed for the last time twenty years ago. Mario speaks fondly of his partner’s creative involvement with his work. Mario now lives in New York City with his partner. It has been thirtythree years for him here in the city. Save for a couple times a year that he retreats to a house on the ocean in Beverly, Massachusetts, he tells us: “ I just don’t want to live anywhere else.” And for Mario, this is more than just a convenience thing or a love of the skyline. It is in New York that Mario’s art is most deeply understood. He has evolved into a force that is inextricable with the New York entertainment scene and even, New York itself. He says: “ I’ve never felt more comfortable doing comedy here.” New York is Mario Cantone’s audience. •

TRAVEL I am in heaven watching the experiment. Ocean science is my passion, and the best scientists in the field are at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. I follow every voyage and expedition and am glued to their website—watching their polar discovery work with cult-like fascination. The reports from the Arctic and Antarctica on marine ecosystems and sea ice have inspired my own trips to the high arctic. Some of the most creative work in oceanography is done at the idyllic seaside campus in Massachusetts—a team of geologists, physicists, marine biologists and climate experts dreams up devices to explore the deep ocean. It’s important work. According to NOAA –the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the ocean covers more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface and yet 95 percent of the underwater

t Resident September 2013

world has never been explored. This is the last great frontier. I didn’t come to WHOI – the acronym for the institute – via the science lab. A few years ago I began writing a series of international adventure novels with exploration themes. Casting around for a cool profession for my female protagonist, I came up with the idea of a Woods Hole scientist who worked on the Alvin submersible. I wanted to pick a character with intellect and spunk, who had a glamorous job that was important to the future of the planet. What could convey cool confidence more than a woman who descended in a sphere the size of a Mini Cooper, traveling three miles underwater to study marine life? It turns out there is such a real person. During my research I met Susan Humphris, one of the superstars at the Institution, who helped me fine- tune my character Cordelia.

The fictional oceanographer became wildly popular with my readers, who demanded I fill in more information about her job in upcoming novels. So here I am finding out more. For such a serious research facility, WHOI is remarkably glamorous. These days the Institute is attracting the solid support of many philanthropists, including the filmmaker James Cameron, who recently donated his uber-cool deep sea diving machine to the folks at WHOI. The filmmaker made history last year by helping design a lemon-lime-colored, one-manned underwater “rocket” and riding it down into the Mariana Trench, the ocean’s deepest point. Nice. But, I’m an Alvin fan. The Wood’s Hole Submersible brings out my inner Jules Verne. The first one was built in 1964 – one of the first

TRAVEL submersibles in the world. The current version can reach 63 percent of the global ocean floor, carrying two scientists and a pilot. The vehicle has six reversible thrusters and can manoeuver over the mountain-like topography, or even rest on the bottom, cutting through the gloom with its quartz iodide and metal halide lights. Take that Captain Nemo. Best of all, the vehicle has video capacity and can transfer its images topside for the world to see. It is truly one of the most splendid things I have seen. Back on the Research Vessel Tioga, the REMUS 100 has hit a snag. A ruggedized computer in the pilothouse of the ship is showing a grid pockmarked with squares of red. Those bright patches tell Amy Kukulya that water is coming in at a few places in the device. The mission has to be aborted to check out if the signals are correct. It seems that seawater and electronics don’t mix.

While the REMUS is recalled, Amy explains the latest fun they’ve had with the REMUS technology. And what fun it is! Tapped by the Discovery Chanel for their famous “Shark Week” programs, the REMUS was fitted out by WHOI with a special “shark cam” to follow great whites. The idea of a shark camera had been under development at WHOI since 2008. It’s very complicated stuff to program a device to track the random wanderings of such a wild animal. The first open water tests for the great white projects had all the elements of comedy. A scientist in a wet suit and wearing a transponder would play an advanced game of Marco Polo with the REMUS, responding electronically each time the devise sent out an electronic inquiry. Computer algorithms had to be calculated and recalculated to keep the REMUS on track—not too high in the water, or too close to the ocean floor, able to follow a swiftly mving target. A very delicate balance

must be found—that takes some serious math! Back on the Tioga the REMUS is hauled dripping onto the deck. Amy Kukulya smiles and says, “There goes the weekend.” They will haul the REMUS 100 back into the lab to find out what ails it. That’s the non-glamorous side of the field: the long, frustrating hours of try, try, try again. Yet, it is amazing to see it all come to fruition. I am once again struck by the tenacity and intelligence of this remarkable group of geniuses. They dream big. And luckily for all of us who share this little oceanic planet, they think deep. • Kitty Pilgrim is an award-winning international journalist whose romantic mystery novel, The Explorer’s Code, features a character who works on the Alvin Submersible at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Seeking Solace at the Sublime Samana By Hillary Latos

t Resident September 2013

TRAVEL magine having a Groundhog Day moment every day, but this time instead of Bill Murray and Andie McDowell in snowy Michigan, it’s you on a secluded beach with the calm Caribbean Sea faced with tough decisions of what cocktail to order while laying on a white daybed by the long Zen like pool or seeking shade under a stately palm in paradise surrounded by peace and serenity. Welcome to the Sublime Samana. Situated on the Northern side of the Dominican Republic in the Samana province, this luxury resort is the only one of its kind in the undeveloped charming fishing village of Las Terranas. Unlike sister cities like Punta Cana or Puerto Plata that have been overfished to meet the demands of their all inclusive mega resorts that characterize the area, in Las Terrenas you can drive to the beach and pick your fish directly from the fishing boats that sell their daily bounty and have it cooked for you on the beach. A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Sublime Samana is located in the verdant Northeast coast against a landscape of verdant jungles and winding roads with breathtaking views of the Ocean along the cliff drives. Situated on 7 acres with miles of unspoiled and fine sand beach to explore, the beckoning and calming ocean waves and balmy breezes immediately soothe the senses. Relax and rejuvenate with a spa treatment in one of their outdoor nature spa cabanas by the beach. A signature treatment is their rain massage in a cabin with views overlooking the ocean. Even if you’re not a beach person, the serene wading pools are broken up with

daybeds that line the center of the property, where you can easily pass the time with a dip in your private wading pool, swim in the pool, and tan on a plush daybed. All of the luxuriously appointed rooms are either a 1,2 or 3 bedroom suite that’s decorated in a contemporary Caribbean Dominican fashion with state of the art equipped kitchens and balconies overlooking the canal of pools, ocean, and lush landscaping. For families or groups the 3 bedroom casitas offer complete privacy in a free standing multi floor villa with a spacious living room and kitchen, Jacuzzi, and some come with a rooftop balcony with a BBQ and outdoor Jacuzzi with 360 degree views. With direct access to some of the Caribbean’s freshest seafood dining is an experience not to be missed. Young rising star Chef Christian Baez personally shops the local fish market daily to create a different catch of the day special daily using all local ingredients where dishes take on sublime flavors with his unique contemporary Dominican spin on classic Caribbean dishes. Take in a casual lunch or dinner beachside by the grill paired with a tropical cocktail to cool you off. For a full American breakfast or formal dinner, dine at the casually elegant Bistro overlooking the pool and central gardens. Some of the chef ’s mouthwatering specialty dishes include Mahi Mahi with Green sauce and clams, Matcha tea coated chicken stuffed with plums and bacon, and grilled pork tenderloin with glazed onion accompanied with vanilla scented pumpkin puree.

Take time to explore this unspoiled area from the mountains to the ocean there is plenty to see. El Limon Falls is one of the Dominican Republic’s must see attractions that takes you through the hills and rain forested jungle. Tap into your adventurous side and take a NJOVUF HVJEFE IPSTFCBDL SJEF PWFS SPVHI terrain and steep hills and learn about the exotic flora and fauna along the way. You’ll feel like Indiana Jones when you reach the end to take a small trail down to swim under the majestic 130 foot waterfall with cold water from the Arroyo Chico that cascades into a pool of natural spring water. The center of Las Terrenas has a charming European feel with many long term residents hailing from France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Canada. French bakeries, beachside bistros, Haitian art galleries, and chic jewelry stores selling baubles of amber and Larimar, Domincan Republic’s indigenous stone, keep the town buzzing with action. After dark, dance the night away with locals and learn how to do the bachata and merengue at Nuevo Mundo. Already considered a burgeoning hotspot by Europeans, Samana is the perfect getaway for the luxury adventure traveler who is looking for an escape away from the throngs of tourists that frequent the Caribbean in all inclusives and mega cruises. For those who seek an evening out on the town, Sarasota is just a drive away and has many bars, restaurants, and cultural activities to choose from—the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center, Asolo Theater, and Ringling Museum, to name a few. The Longboat Key Club and Resort is a particularly desirable retreat along the twelve miles of beaches that make up this vacation hotspot in Florida. Nestled on the southernmost end of Longboat Key between Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, it is truly a magnificent sliver of the best that the area has to offer. Sports options, beaches and pools, and ultra-luxurious guest rooms make this the go-to for travelers. Longboat Key Club has earned Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play” award for its miles and miles of greens overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay. If you’re a seasoned player, this is your spot. If you’re a beginner, you can opt for a professional golf instruction session and an 18-hole round on the phenomenal course. Even if golf is not your cup of “tee,” you can grab a freshly squeezed juice and light meal at Spike ‘n Tees, the open-air restaurant overlooking the golf course. The nation’s sports authorities equally esteem the tennis courts at Longboat Key Club. The 20 Har-Tru tennis courts were named by Tennis Magazine as one of the “Top Tennis Resorts” in the United States for 2012 and the “Number 1 Tennis Resort” on the Gulf Coast of Florida. In the back garden my private swimming pool is filled with vermillion rose petals and water that’s Ah! The temperature of my skin. Laos, at the confluence of the Nam Kahn and Mekong rivers is an unspoiled landscape of cloud-topped mountains rooted in the river’s rice and vegetable patties and a plethora of kind elephants half wild half tame. I’ve never been bare back on an elephant particularly in the middle of the Kahn River so I’m feeling very brave on Maya, my elephant before we emerge into the teak forest where she decides to randomly up root saplings and I realize I have absolutely no control. That evening we dine at L’Eléphant a stylish French bistro featuring escargots wrapped in lotus leaves, and where else? -coq au vent. An exquisitely maintained 1970 white Lincoln Continental -the gift from the United States government to Savang Vatthana the last king of the country is parked by the front door. he Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park is a special hotel tucked away down on the southern tip of the Big Apple. My brief but thoroughly enjoyable visit here reminded me of how much this city has to offer and made me wonder why I hadn’t sought out this hotel sooner. Nearly half of their 298 guest rooms offer exquisite views of the harbor with the iconic Statue of Liberty occupying center stage. In-room telescopes provide up close and personal views of the lovely Lady, perfectly positioned directly on her for your first lookthrough. The contemporary furnishings and decor of the hotel are characteristically Ritz Carlton along with their always-attentive service and immaculate accommodations. The fitness center is more than adequate for a hotel of this size and their fine dining restaurant, 2West, located in hotel lobby serves American cuisine in a friendly and welcoming vibe. What I found particularly stellar was their Club Lounge serving light bites for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. And since the hotel caters to a business crowd, my weekend escape meant I had the lounge almost completely to myself each time I visited.

The Museum of American Indian, The Holocaust Museum, walking tours of the Financial District and one of the most enjoyable, a Sunday brunch cruise or sunset sail on the Hudson, via one of the many sailboats leaving from the nearby North Cove Marina pier. The hotel is also conveniently located nearby to the Staten Island Ferry for a quick hop over to Staten Island. Ideal for not only a free viewing of the Statue of Liberty but also for a trip to the recently opened Dairy Queen— the first in New York City! As it turns out, The Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park offers one of the best staycation experiences in New York City. •

Luck be a Lady at Caesars Atlantic City By Hilary Latos

TRAVEL Though Atlantic City took a hit with Hurricane Sandy almost a year ago, it has plowed millions back into its redevelopment—and it’s never been better. Anchoring the world-famous Boardwalk is Caesars Atlantic City. Built in 1979, it recently experienced a multimillion-dollar refurbishment to restore the opulence and resplendent extravagance that would make even Julius Caesar proud. Live like royalty with unparalleled service and hospitality in the spacious luxury and premium rooms located in the Centurion Tower. Every suitesized room has oversized bay windows with sweeping vistas of the Atlantic City skyline and ocean. They are decorated with lavish touches and detailed designs such as inlaid wood and mirror headboards. High-tech installed in the mirrors and sleek sliding glass doors. Even if you’re not a hard-core gambler, there is plenty around to entertain the senses. The dining establishments attract some of the best chefs in the world. Take advantage of Sunday through Friday from 5-7 pm for only $39 at three top-tier restaurants. Located in the Temple Lobby, Mia is rated as one of Atlantic City’s top restaurants—helmed by acclaimed Chef Chris Scarduzio who whips up sublime Italian/Mediterranean creations. For prime steaks, Nero’s Tuscan Steakhouse serves thick cut juicy steaks that will please even the most demanding carnivores and has fresh seafood selections for piscivores. Served in an Old World style steakhouse, Nero’s is also committed to sustainability and sources from local purveyors. A popular

Upper East Side seafood shack in NYC, Atlantic Grill just opened their Atlantic City outpost serving the best in sea fare from specials. Stephen Starr’s famous hotspot, Buddakan, is also located in Caesars. Tantalizing Pan Asian delicacies like wasabiare served in a striking setting resembling a traditional Chinese village—replete with rock gardens and thatched huts under a twinkling sky. KWI restaurants and noodle bar is known for exotic renditions of classic in a casual setting. A New York landmark, Morton’s The Steakhouse, is world-famous for its generous portions of USDA prime aged beef and classic seafood that’s always prepared to perfection. Nero’s Sunday brunch buffet is also a not-to-be-missed experience. Bloody Marys are unlimited, so try your hand at creating the ultimate Bloody, and spend the afternoon sampling delicacies from the raw bar, sushi station, carving station, and dabble in the sinful dessert bar and crepe station. For people watching, visit the Boardwalk Beer Garden with live music and an extensive selection of imported and domestic beers and ales which can also be enjoyed with food from Philip’s Seafood. Not to mention, Philip’s Seafood is absolutely famous for its crab cakes. Atlantic City is also known for its decadent nightlife and Caesars doesn’t disappoint in this respect. Home to one of the most popular nightclubs on the Boardwalk, Dusk is the place to see and be seen. Designed by I Crave, this 10,000-square-foot behemoth

was inspired by the sea with a dramatic entryway to the pulsating nightclub awash in blue, purple, and gold—providing the perfect setting for its exclusive clientele. Tapping into the Rat Pack heyday of Atlantic City, The Continental is Stephen Starr’s tribute to an American diner that melds “vintage elegance and vanguard sophistication.” Not only is the décor whimsical and fun, but the creative drinks and concoctions are equally as imaginative, and can be enjoyed inside or out on the patio with breathtaking views of the ocean. For an after-hours nightcap, the Toga Bar offers an “Only in Atlantic City” experience with live performances from service, and high energy music. If all this adult fun requires another vacation, relax and unwind at one of the luxurious Roman bath spas. The double entendre name, Qua, Roman for “here,” embodies the spirit of Caesars, living for the moment, and is short for aqua, representing the invigorating nature of the Roman baths. Tower, Qua has three aqua therapy baths that offer soothing and therapeutic soaks. The largest is the Tepidarium which uses warm water to restore the skin, while the Caldarium is similar to a hot water jacuzzi that soothes muscles. The Frigidarium invigorates the senses—leaving you refreshed for your journey home. • Caesars Atlantic City 2100 Pacific Avenue Atlantic City, NJ 609.348.4411 caesarsac.com

Old Things are

New Again

Cole Rumbough with

t Resident September 2013

Resident: Could you tell us a little about your work? Rumbough: I love to sing the Great American Songbook. That means Cole Porter, Gershwin, Rodgers & Hart, Sammy Cahn & Jimmy Van Heusen, Irving Berlin, etc. I like traditional big band and swing. The style I love is cabaret, which is a very specific niche—a cross between jazz and Broadway, because many of the songs these composers wrote were originally written for shows and they can be a bit too much on the theatrical side. I love performing love songs in an intimate room and making that couple in the far, dark corner of the room fall more in love with each other than they already were. Resident: That’s beautiful. So do you consider yourself a romantic? Rumbough: Yes, I definitely consider myself a romantic. I want every aspect of my life to be romantic. In fact, that’s why I love jazz music so much. To me, it resembles the feeling of being in love. Resident: What was your most recent performance? Rumbough: My most recent performance was a more casual, laid back one. I was a guest performer at the Rams Head Inn on Shelter Island, NY on August 11th. I performed with my dear friends, Peter & Jane, who are a husband and wife team on Bass & Piano I play a lot with, in and around the Hamptons. Some friends of ours joined in on drums, saxophone, and trumpet. It was a lot of fun! Resident: What are some of your musical influences? Rumbough: My favorites are Ella Fitzgerald, Vic Damone, Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Christine Andreas and Marilyn Maye. But I also love Nat King Cole, Stan Getz, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Doris Day, Judy Garland, Mel Torme, Billie Holiday, & Sarah Vaughan. I could go on forever but I mainly listen to jazz and classical. I enjoy some of the new acoustic singer/songwriter artists as well. Resident: What has been your favorite performance to date? Rumbough: My favorite performance of my own was at The International Red Cross Ball at The Breakers in Palm Beach this past February. I sang with the Peter Duchin band and it was a very special opportunity to be able to sing a tribute to my grandmother,

Dina Merrill, who was the honoree of the evening. This is my favorite to date, but I have a feeling the best is yet to come! Resident: Do you have any role models within the music industry? Anyone whose career you really admire? Rumbough: I really admire Barbra Streisand’s career. She is absolutely amazing. I can relate to her as a perfectionist but I also think her strategy is brilliant. Maybe it’s her strategy or maybe just her stage fright but I think that because she doesn’t perform all that often, tickets to hear her are all the more desirable.Â

New York history on my other side of the family includes The Woolworth building, the tallest skyscraper in the world at the time, which my great-great-great uncle, F.W. Woolworth built for his five-and-ten-cent empire. Then of course, there’s my greatgrandfather, E.F. Hutton’s famous career, which began on Wall Street. With so much family history all around me, I feel like I belong here! With all the jazz clubs in town, what better place for me to live? •

I also love Ella Fitzgerald’s career. I have almost every single one of her albums. I am so grateful that she recorded so much so that we have all of her recorded music to enjoy forever. She recorded over 2,000 songs! And I love almost all of them. With most artists, I am more selective—I like some of their stuff but don’t like others. But with Ella, I can safely say I love just about everything she did. She was consistently amazing throughout her successful career spanning six decades. Resident: Our readers are local New Yorkers so we must ask—what do you feel makes you a New Yorker? Rumbough: Well, for starters, I was born in .BOIBUUBO PO +BOVBSZ BU .PVOU Sinai hospital and lived here for the first few years of my life. Although I grew up spending most of my time between Greenwich and the Hamptons, I always came back into the city for dinners and Broadway shows. ou may not know the name Santo Loquasto, but you have most likely have seen his work. Loquasto has designed scenery and costumes for some of the biggest names in the business, and his skill sets ranges from classical ballet to Broadway, and from live theater to film--with a healthy dash of opera tossed into the mix. I met with Loquasto on NVHHZ "VHVTU EBZ BU UIF .BSHPU 1BUJTTFSJF PO th Street. A modest man with a dapper beard and killer smile, he sips an iced coffee while we talk; every now and then, he flashes that dazzling smile. A native of Pennsylvania, Loquasto traces his interest in theater back to his youth, when he was, by his own description, the “classic summer stock kid.â€? He first worked with scenery, though costumes, he said, “were always a part of it.â€? He graduated from King’s $PMMFHF B TNBMM $BUIPMJD TDIPPM JO 8JMLFT #BSSF BOE GSPN IF BUUFOEFE UIF Yale School of Drama. After graduating, he did not go straight to New York but worked in SFHJPOBM UIFBUFS JO UIF /FX )BWFO BSFB "SSJWJOH JO /FX :PSL $JUZ JO XBT B TFSJPVT thrill and now Loquasto makes his home on the Upper West Side. In his ongoing work for American Ballet Theater, he has collaborated with several of the dance’s world most notable directors including Twyla Tharp, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Kenneth MacMillan, Agnes de Mille and Mark Morris. This fall, Loquasto’s costumes and sets for the world premiere of The Tempest by Alexei Ratmansky will highlight American Ballet Theatre’s inaugural fall season in New York. In many ways, it’s a perfect fit. With his strong theatrical background, Loquasto is well grounded in Shakespeare and has designed costumes for Joseph Papp’s productions of Shakespeare in the Park as well as productions of Shakespeare at other venues. But designing costumes for the ballet requires some special considerations. “I don’t want the dancers to be fighting the weight of the dresses,â€? he explains. How does he help translate the Bard’s immortal words into an equally compelling, if wordless, spectacle? “I follow the play,â€? he says, adding that it is his aim to follow the progression sequentially and where words, or their kinetic translation is not applicable, he relies on pure emotion, like anger and rage. But Loquasto is also eager to balance the intensity of such feelings with lighter, comedic notes, in this case embodied by characters like Trinculo and Stephano. And he is confident in his material: “To design Shakespeare teaches you how little you need on stage.â€? Loquasto’s film credits include twenty-seven films with quintessential New York director Woody Allen. The first of these collaborations was in 1980, when he worked on Stardust Memories, and the most recent was Blue Jasmine. Speaking of the relationship with Allen, he says, “It’s almost incomprehensible how it happened and how it endured,â€? says Loquasto. The “how-it- happenedâ€? came through an early association with screenwriter Marshall Brickman; the enduring part has to do with Loquasto’s nuanced understanding of the way things need to look. When asked what he likes best about his job, he quickly answers, “the beginning, the search, the figuring out how you are going to do it.â€? What he likes least is the bottom-line, business aspects of trying to create the vision he wants within the budget that has been allocated. “The haggling wears you out,â€? he notes. But Loquasto seems anything but worn out. He is filled with ideas that he continually strives to bring to visual fruition. When he sees the performers getting excited he gets excited too. “It’s all very exhilarating,â€? he says—and once more, I am treated to that wonderful, life-affirming smile. •

Upcoming Exhibitions this Fall: The Noguchi Museum The Noguchi Museum is an extension of Noguchi’s studio itself—he moved to Long Island City twenty years ago to be closer to the artists and the materials he needed. He then built the museum directly across from his studio. The museum highlights a range of Noguchi’s work from sculpture, works on paper, architecture, designs for furniture, lighting, landscapes, theater and the intellectual environment within which these works of art came to gestation. This exhibit pairs Noguchi’s works with those of mentors Constantin Brancusi, Frida Kahlo, Alexander Calder, and Arshile Gorky.

PREVIEW BALLET September 17 - September 22, 2013 Swan Lake: David H. Koch Theater

By Nalini Leilani

Fall brings a bounty of treasures to our favorite museum in New York City, and perhaps even the world. Going back time and time again is always a treat, and especially so this time.

October 30 - November 10, 2013 The Tempest: David H. Koch Theater

The New York City Ballet is a staple of the New York arts landscape. The ballet is an opportunity to revel in beauty, grace, and some of the finest talent around for a few hours. A timeless classic that is equally magnificent to watch the first time or the fifth time. Tschaikovsky’s composition is passionate, enchanting and perfect as ever.

“The Tempest is presented by the American Ballet Theater. These worldrenowned dancers bring masterpieces to life at the David H. Koch Theater. This two-week span boasts the world premiere of Alexei Ratmansky’s “The Tempest—inspired by William Shakespeare’s play. “The Tempest is thought to be Shakespeare’s last play—a story influenced by a tradition of romance and incorporating tragicomedy.

Roberto Bolle

An International Ballet Superstar By Joe Alexander

caught up with ballet’s sexiest superstar Roberto Bolle while he was on a boat off Capri in his native Italy. The critically acclaimed dancer, who lives between Milano and NYC, is bringing his show “Roberto Bolle & Friends” to City Center for a one-night gala on September 17th. Bolle, who started these shows 13 years ago in Europe, said he was inspired by “Pavarotti & Friends” and hopes that he can expand the audience for ballet the way The Three Tenors helped to popularize opera. “It is the first time I’m bringing my gala to NYC and I’m really happy about that,” said Bolle, who has been a Principal Dancer at American Ballet Theatre since 2009 and has held the title of Etoile of La Scala Theatre for a decade.

He came to La Scala to stage ‘The Nutcracker.’ That meeting was important because after that I was more sure about my future.â€? Roberto went on to dance for Queen Elizabeth, Pope John Paul II, and at the opening of the 2006 Winter Olympics, which was TFFO CZ CJMMJPO QFPQMF i* BMXBZT XBOU CBMMFU UP CF B TIPX and known by a big audience, â€?adding, “I would like people to consider ballet an art. We are on stage playing characters that give emotion in a story.â€? In 2008, Bolle performed at the Youth America Grand Prix Gala in support of their international competitions. “They find and give opportunities to young talent. It is the top level in the world, the best one. You need 3 things to be a dancer, talent, passion and dedication. If you have these qualities and study at a good school, you can be a great success.â€? Known as a real life Apollo, Roberto reveals, “To be Apollo in life and career it means the beauty of the body. This harmony of the body has been really helpful for my career because, honestly, dancing is a lot about beauty. The quality of the movement and the harmony of the dancer and the body and face have helped me a lot because I think it’s natural.â€? In 2009, Bruce Weber photographed him for the book “Roberto Bolle: An Athlete in Tights.â€? “Some photographers see you and want to show that you are sexy or sensual, like when working with Bruce Weber. There were some nudes, some sexy poses, some really sensual, others a bit erotic. But being sexy isn’t something that I’m conscious of. I consider the book to be a masterpiece.â€? Roberto, who has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 1999 and has escorted Katy Perry, worked with Giorgio Armani and done advertising campaigns for Ferragamo says he would consider a role in a movie, on Broadway or an underwear campaign if it were a good fit. “I haven’t had a proposal for an underwear campaign, but I’d definitely consider it. Of course,â€? he chuckled, “The underwear campaign would be very popular.â€? Roberto confessed, “It would be fun to have a part in a movie because it’s totally different but I honestly don’t think I could have a Hollywood career. I’m not an actor.â€? Thinking ahead Roberto confides, “On top of all this work, it’s not something you’re going to do all your life. At some point, even if you work hard and do everything you can, someday you will not be able to keep doing it. It’s really sad and something you feel that is unfair, in a way. “ Mikhail Baryshnikov is a hero of Bolle’s because he says the Russian star wasn’t afraid to do everything. “Baryshnikov is still performing but seriously, I won’t perform at that age. I will retire earlier. At that age, I may be a director of a company, maybe in La Scala. I would like to use the knowledge and experience I have to be a director. So what I do after will be something that I like but it’s not my dream job. It’s right now. In this moment is my dream job.â€? • If you miss Roberto this month, he’ll be back at the Metropolitan Opera house with ABT in May 2014. nycitycenter.org

ow fabulous to live in New York City.” This is what my dear friend who lives in Monte Carlo tells me every time we chat... and I could not agree more, because daily there is always something new and ever so current happening. As an artist I thrive on the exotic and ability to think outside the box concerning most matters and most of my friends have this “gene” shall we call it. One such friend is the designer Maggie Norris. I have known Maggie for over a decade and remember vividly the first time I visited her atelier to seek a commission for her extraordinary Couture bustier masterpieces. The wonderful thing about Maggie, aside from her ability to create Museum quality clothing is that she is a true artist. Her designs are sewn, embroidered and beaded completely by hand. These are the types of treasures, like fine jewelry, that can be passed down from generation to generation. New York Fashion Week is right around the corner and I plan on being front and center, awaiting the new arrivals. My dear friend, Paola Bacchini Rosenshein is hosting a luncheon at her Penthouse celebrating Yue-Sai Khan and her upcoming event: China Fashion Night Gala honoring Vivienne Tam benefiting the Fashion Institute of Technology, this will be next week so I look forward to this. design, and technology connected to the fashion Industry. The last time I was there I saw the Daphne Guinness exhibit. It was absolutely amazing and featured her personal collection of clothes, and movie Lady White Snake. It showcased several of her pieces designed by Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Nina Ricci and others. Chanel is always my favorite and I have been a long standing client forever. Jane Maymen always takes such good care of me at the 57th street boutique and always has the most wonderful personality. My children gave me a beautiful Chanel J12 Chromatic watch for Mother’s Day, and I must say, I love it. Not only does it keep perfect time but it is the perfect “Mommy” watch. I am fascinated with the origin of timekeeping devices and have collected hourglasses ever since I was a little girl. The Egyptians used large obelisks to track the movement of the sun, they also developed water clocks which functioned similar to a hourglass. The oldest known surviving hourglass resides in the British Museum in London. This is a fabulous Museum on Great Russell street that has exciting activities for the entire family. Recently my children and I made the Greek porridge, a dish the ancient Greeks enjoyed, from their Young Explorers page, on their website. Try it, you will love it! • britishmuseum.org

STYLE

In the Children’s Dept By Miriam Silverberg

‘I am very tiny - only 5’ and weigh 88 lbs. I’ve recently discovered a new place to shop. The children’s department! This has opened up whole new fashion vistas for me. One day I was in Saks going up the escalator, browsing on each floor, when I got off in the children’s department. I was about to leave, thinking, this is not for me, when I spied a skirt that seemed rather large. I decided to take more careful note of the clothes. I’ve since found many terrific buys. You can find designer names at a fraction of what those same designer clothes would cost in other departments. I’ve bough a pair of Ralph Lauren summer pants that didn’t need shortening. I’ve also bought a beautiful black velvet sleeveless shell that’s a size 16 and fits me perfectly. Actually, a children’s size 14 or 16 fits me well. I’ve also bought a number of dresses in the children’s department. Admittedly, they are a little short-waisted on me but I can’t decide if they really are that on my adult figure or just the Empire style. Either way, they’re very flattering. Which brings me to another point. Children don’t dress like children anymore. They dress like little adults which is great for us “little adults.” With a careful eye it’s amazing what you can find. Just steer clear of anything too frilly or girly. So many children’s clothes today are really so chic and simple that it’s impossible to tell whether they’re for children or adults. So indulge your inner fashionista with a designer number you picked up in the children’s department and when you’re asked where you got it, just smile and keep mum. •

Not Just For Kids: Back to School Means Parents, Too By Peter Bencivenga The phrase “back to school” for NYC parents means much more than it used to. As a parent of two NYC public school children, I know school communities are no strangers to big change. Some can be good, (like increased funding for after-school activities) some can be devastating (seventeen NYC schools have been shut down this year) and some can just be just plain strange (like fruit-filled vending machines). But for most of us, “back to school” evokes nothing but feelings of confusion: What are the common core standards and the new graduation requirements? What are the new attendance policies? How have schools revamped teacher evaluations? Long gone are the days of “back to school” where the stress was simply what backpack or pencil box your child needed. There is, thankfully, a remedy to the confusion for NYC parents: Be in touch with your school community. After teaching in the NYC public school system for sixteen years, I noticed schools with the right online student data systems consistently had a leg-up when it came to keeping parents in the know: not just for the obvious benefit of a parent being more closely involved in their child’s education, but

t Resident September 2013

for the benefit of the entire school community. For a school to be successful, it is an absolute necessity to have strong parent communication and involvement. I am now the co-founder of a technology company that provides online services to over 400 NYC schools. My company, CaseNEX, is made up of former NYC educators and current NYC parents like myself. Creating better parent communication through successful online student data systems became a problem we set out to solve. Could we create a well-functioning, easy-to-use system that resulted in positive parent interaction? Would students accessing the system find themselves motivated, knowing teachers and parents were monitoring their progress? Our products, Skedula and Pupilpath, answered these questions with a resounding yes. Pupilpath alone receives over one million user logins per month in NYC schools, providing online instant messaging access to teachers, the ability to download student assignments, find out grades, and seamlessly track performance over time. Without systems like this in place in NYC schools, I wonder how parents find out about policy change. They have no way

of checking assignments their children have to complete. They can’t find out if their child is failing a class—until it’s too late. And most importantly: Parents aren’t informed on a daily basis if their child is on track for promotion. As the new school year approaches, I encourage parents to keep in constant communication with their school communities in order to stay on top of their child’s progress. This school year, more and more schools are taking charge by providing parents with easy-touse data systems like PupilPath and Skedula. NYC parents who are no strangers to change will soon realize with the right online student data system, “back to school” can evoke less confusion and more excitement about the potential for a successful 2013-2014 school year. • For more information visit datacation.com and pupilpath.skedula.com

A PARENT’S A – B –ByCDr.GUIDE FOR BACK TO SCHOOL Joe Taravella It’s that time of year when families embark upon another back to school season. As you cross off your checklist of new clothes and school supplies in preparation for a new learning adventure, are you and your child emotionally ready for this separation? Here are a few tips for a smooth transition into an exciting year of growth and learning for you and your child. A – Always be aware of your emotions. Stay calm and check your emotions at the front door. The start of school can be a scary or an exciting step in your child’s development. However, it may elicit a plethora of emotions in parents, from enthusiasm to fear. Check in with yourself regularly and be mindful of what you are feeling and what it may stem from. Are your own back to school memories pleasant or were you the kid clutched to your parents’ leg screaming to not let go? Model a positive attitude for your child. B – Bring a personal item from home. A transitional object from early childhood to toddlerhood (i.e., family picture, small stuffed animal, or keepsake) will keep your child feeling connected to you throughout the day and remind them of the security of home and family. It also provides them with a sense that

t Resident September 2013

you are thinking of them even though you are apart. C – Communicate! Create a “safe spot” in your home (i.e., room, sofa, bed) where children feel safe communicating their thoughts and feelings with you. Start having discussions about school early in the summer rather than waiting until the night or week before. A perfect time for this is while you are shopping for school supplies. Share with them your back to school stories. Let them know it’s ok to be nervous and that their feelings are legitimate. Children are only able to rely upon their fantasy of what they think school is going to be like or what they hear from others. Providing a comfortable forum to communicate at home will facilitate better communication with their teacher. D – Don’t linger at drop-off. One of the biggest mistakes parents make is staying at school any longer than the teacher needs. Your children’s loyalty and trust has always been with you, and now you’re putting them in the hands of a new adult. They need to negotiate how to divide their loyalty, which maybe uneasy for them, but remember it is necessary for them to learn independence; so a quick and speedy transition is best.

E – Easy access to supplies and clothes. Make certain they are capable of taking care of their belongings with ease in an effort to foster their independence and self-control. If your child has trouble buttoning their pants, have them wear pants with an elastic waist, so they don’t have trouble in the bathroom. Send healthy foods they enjoy eating…if they don’t eat broccoli at home, they won’t eat it at school. “And whether it’s your first or second year dropping off your little ones into the hands of their new teachers, don’t assume it’s going to be a smooth transition,” says Annemarie Maini, Director of The South Orange Country School, a Montessori preschool and Kindergarten in South Orange, New Jersey. “Just because the first week may be easy, the second week can sneak up on you if you miss their anxiety, so start talking about school weeks before it starts.” And as you hand over your child to their teacher and quickly make a run for it, remind yourself there are many new lessons for you and your child as you begin this learning adventure together as a team with the new teacher. It will be a wonderful time full of testing moments, but ones that are nonetheless important. •

The Changing Face

of Gaming By Dr. Jo Webber

’ve just come back from the Gamescom show in Germany. It’s the world’s largest gaming show and anyone who is looking at how to build trade show booths should go to this event to see the amazing displays. As a result, gaming is on the forefront of my mind, and of course is hugely popular with teens.  In looking at all of these games, it just made me realize just how much gaming had changed since I was sticking 10 pence in a Galaga machine.  For example, there is a game called Habbo Hotel that is the world’s largest social game and online community for teenagers (90% of Habbo users are between 13-18 years old), with over 290 million registered characters to date in 150 countries. It’s incredible to think that so many people could be interacting simultaneously and building their personas in an online virtual environment.  Online gaming is a category of spending which surely is completely defined as disposable income.  But while the quality and availability have changed many of the basic gaming themes are still there and generation after generation choose to spend their disposable income on gaming. Like all things in life - some people go overboard - but most of us play games in moderation.  A few minutes here and there. For many teenagers with more time on their hands - they can

spend more time on gaming and when they do they can find a wide variety of games of various levels of quality. Most modern games are choosing to monetize (get paid for) their games using virtual goods. The basic idea is that the game will be free to play - but if you really want a more immersive experience you need to pay for items in the game.  Gamers spent $2.3 billion in the US alone on digital goods in 2011 (USA Today) http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/ post/2012/02/virtual-goods-spending-topped-2-billion-inus-in-2011/1#.Uhe4CWRARrU) For many teens, gaming is a integral part of the way they play and socialize with friends and is probably here to stay.  To help teens make smart choices about how to allocate their disposable income, it is important for parents to encourage teens to learn and practice basic budgeting rather than just handing them a credit card without counting how much is being spent.  This way they can start making responsible decisions on their own about which games they choose to spend money on as well as how much they are spending on these HBNFT t

Controlling Your

Dog’s Scent Marking By Victoria Stilwell

positively.com cent marking is a very normal and common behavior particularly in male dogs but becomes a big problem when marking occurs in the home. Dogs mark to advertise their presence or to claim territory and resources. Pheromones in urine and feces contain chemical messages that pass on information about the marker such as age, sex, health and reproductive status. Even though urination has a competitive component, it can also occur if a dog is over stimulated, for example, during or after vigorous play, or if a dog becomes anxious in a particular situation, such as when a person leaves. This common expression of anxiety in dogs is often mistaken for spite, resulting in punishment which only serves to increase anxious behavior. Both sexes scent mark but entire males are the worst offenders as signaling sexual availability and claiming territory is ‘encouraged’ by the presence of testosterone. In many cases neutering can significantly reduce the desire to scent mark, but some dogs continue even after they have been neutered. Resources such as toys, food bowls, chew treats, bones and beds are the most likely objects to be marked and in some cases a dog will actually mark a person or something that smells heavily of that person such as a sofa or bed.

t Resident September 2013

Scent marking is more common in multi-dog households where dogs compete for space, resources and human attention and even though this is a difficult behavior to work with, progress can be made by taking the following steps. Remove high value resources that encourage competitive marking and do not allow the dog or dogs that scent mark to roam free around the home. Take the dogs to a dog -proofed room or crate when you are unable to actively supervise them in order to prevent access to favorite marking spots. Avoid competitive or vigorous play indoors as excess activity encourages urination and if a dog is about to mark, interrupt the behavior with a short vocal noise and immediately direct the dog onto something more positive or take him outside. Help a marking dog succeed by taking him to new and different areas on walks. This will encourage him to mark outside rather than in the home. Teaching older dogs that are not housebroken to toilet appropriately can also be a challenge. Most dogs raised in a normal domestic situation respond well to a good toileting schedule, but those that have lived in puppy mills are notoriously difficult to teach. Dogs are essentially clean animals and do not like to toilet where they sleep and eat, but because of cramped conditions, puppy mill dogs are forced to do just that. Transitioning into a home is therefore problematic and makes crate training, a usually successfully way to toilet train a dog, much less effective. However even puppy mill dogs can be taught to toilet appropriately with a good schedule that relies on going back to basics and allowing access to outside areas every hour and then gradually building up to less frequent trips as the dog builds up control. Following a schedule builds up a ritual of behavior that eventually becomes predictable and reliable. Every dog needs to feel confident about toileting and punishing accidents will only scare the dog into finding ways of toileting in secret. Human patience and sensitivity is the key to success. •

Restaurant Roundup By Hilary Latos

esident’s staff has scavenged the city and here you have it: some of our favorite restaurants for this fall. Whether you crave a simple cheeseburger, a luxurious steak dinner with the boys, or a boozy ladies’ brunch, we have the spot for you. Food, glamour and a range of cuisines, this list still makes our mouths water.

Market Table 54 Carmine St. 212.255.2100 markettablenyc.com

Harlem Shake Step back in time 50 years to when the spotlight was on bouffants, zoot suits and fedoras, and jukeboxes played tunes that represented the innocence and optimism of the youth. The same ambiance of americana’s past has been recreated at Harlem Shake, serving classic diner fare with a modern twist. If you’re not counting calories, decadence through comfort food can be enjoyed. Reasonably priced classics and signature items include a double patty “Pat LaFrieda” cheeseburger that is griddled to a crispy perfection, or topped with crispy jerk seasoned fries, a deep-fried, bacon-wrapped New York beef hot dog drenched with a chipotle mayo and pickled cherry pepper bacon relish. Wash it down with a good old-fashioned triple scoop milkshake in custom flavors like red velvet or salted caramel. For the calorie conscious, the kale and chickpea Caesar salad or Caribbean slaw are delicious and heart-healthy options. Paying homage to the past, Harlem Shake celebrates the area’s rich culture and energy with touching details that include walls covered in vintage covers of JET magazine, photos of notable patrons who have dined here, as well as a lifesize lenticular of “Miss Harlem Shake” model Shannon Thomas who does the real Harlem Shake as guests walk by. Market Table Born and raised on a farm along the Chesapeake Bay, Chef Mike Price made his foray into the culinary world at local crab shacks. After honing his craft with some of the top chefs in the world, he opened Market Table with his good friend Joey Campanaro of Kenmare and Little Owl fame. Reflecting the quaint and laid back attitude of the West Village, Market Table has already developed a loyal following from the neighborhood and beyond that comes back for his fresh approach to Nouveau American--using seasonal local ingredients with big flavors and unique pairings. Tantalizing options include octopus a la plancha, pancetta-wrapped pork tenderloin with coarse grits, shishito peppers and pickled ramps, and grilled Atlantic char with spring onion puree and ginger chive oil. Leave room for dessert temptations such as their salty sweet chocolate terrine or peanut butter ice box cake. Appealing and delicious, this downtown darling is the West Village’s best kept secret.

Pampano While Sunday brunch has always been a New York institution, Pampano’s new “bottomless” Sunday brunch gives us another reason to celebrate on the weekends from 11:30 am-3 pm. For only $39, guests can indulge in “bottomless” white or red sangria and unlimited family style dishes for up to two hours. Top Chef Richard Sandoval, who is known for his contemporary take on Mexican cuisine, infuses classic brunch favorites with a south-of-theborder twist. Choose from brunch specialties or Mexican classics including the Pampano Benedict with sopes, black bean puree, poached eggs, salsa verde, chicken & waffles with maple-dijon sauce and bacon, and a spicy shrimp & grits with creamy hominy. Other delectable entrees include grilled steak with manchego cheese, black sea bass with chipotle sauce and truffle bean puree, and adobo pulled pork filled enchiladas or tacos. Enjoy the libations in the airy dining room or on the sun-drenched terrace, which gives you another reason that Sunday is the best day of the week.

The Driver’s Seat Restaurant: A True Southampton Staple By Nalini Leilani he Driver’s Seat Restaurant is the restaurant that every town needs; it is an American classic that has over the years become a Southampton classic. And it is easy to see why—the eatery is casual and perfect for virtually any dining occasion. Sitting on the outdoor patio brought us an opportunity to people watch as well as enjoy the light summer breeze. The inside of the restaurant features a décor that is as timeless as it is cozy with simple white walls and elegantly casual furniture. The menu is an amalgamation of casual American favorites spotted with zestier dishes such as a Caribbean Jerk Chicken Wrap that was smothered in an aromatic spice—perfection next to the pulpier pineapple red pepper relish. But mostly we favored the more traditional dishes—and what is more classic on a warm summer night in Southampton than orders of fish and chips, a lobster roll, and shrimp

cocktail? The seafood was notably fresh in all of these dishes—the locally caught flounder filets were breaded to a gleamingly rich golden color and the roll highlighted succulent chunks of lobster meat. Quiche, a grossly understated specialty, was lovely here: the broccoli cheddar quiche we opted for was rich, flaky and oozing with flavor. The shrimp was both incredibly large and tender. Other seafood specialties on the menu include jumbo lump crab cakes, a flounder sandwich, and shrimp in a basket. The menu also boasts an assortment of items from the grill that are reminiscent of an oldschool diner: a simple chicken breast, an eightounce beef burger, a bun-less burger, and a veggie burger cover options for every palette. The Driver’s Seat Sweet Spinach Salad was fresh and the sautéed peaches were an unusual, but welcome, addition to a typical mix of greens— spattered with candied pecans, this salad was just one example of a classic done effortlessly well. The French Bean and Artichoke Salad

was a joyful mix of fresh greens and lentils that accompanied our otherwise indulgent meal wonderfully. The eatery has a rich history pertinent to the evolution of Southampton itself. Today, local and visiting patrons alike can dine in the front bar room that was originally erected in 1888 as a produce store. Over a century later, the Driver’s Seat Restaurant has evolved from a produce store to a hangout for a local racing set (yes, this is where its name comes from) and now, a true Southampton staple. • The Driver’s Seat Restaurant 66 Jobs Lane Southampton Village, NY 11968 631-283-6606 thedriversseatrestaurant.com

East End Avenue:

o some, East End Avenue in Yorkville seems as far away as Montauk, but to its residents it’s a haven for serene city living away from the pulsating heart of Manhattan. This short avenue is perfectly squeezed between York and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive and between East 79th and East 92nd streets. East End Avenue is fully developed with attractive residential buildings of various architectural styles and its lush Carl Schurz Park draws buyers looking to own a home with impressive river and/or park views.

East End Avenue’s Carl Schurz Park is a Zen retreat with front-row views of the East River and verdant paths leading to the top deck of the FDR Drive known as The John Finley Walk which runs from East 81st Street to Gracie Mansion. Residents strolling on The John Finley Walk enjoy panoramic views of the Roosevelt Island Lighthouse, the Tri-Borough Bridge and Randall’s and Wards Islands. The park and promenade attract people of all ages, as these public spaces are kid and pet friendly. Families looking to raise their children in a quiet community are drawn to the neighborhood’s respected all-girls private school Chapin. It offers grades Kindergarten through 12 and the tuition for 2013/14 is $37,780. Some of Chapin’s notable alumni include Jacqueline Kennedy, Vera Wang, Ivanka Trump, Amanda Hearst, and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s daughter Anna Roosevelt Dall. Public schools nearby include P.S 158 and J.H.S 167 which both schools have very high ratings. When it comes to real estate properties, the area is known for having grand residences with that “Wow Factor”. Two years ago, I represented a remarkable duplex coop at 10 Gracie Square, located across from the park on East 84th Street. The residence successfully sold for $5.8 million. This duplex offers exceptional eye-level views of the river and ultimate privacy. Although the building’s façade is not imposing, this elite coop offers alluring character and unsurpassed views of the East River. 10 Gracie Square is known to be a highly exclusive coop and to own here buyers need real cash, as the building requires 70% down and looks for significant assets.

REAL ESTATE

An Innovative Modular Marvel By Christopher A. Pape t Resident September 2013

REAL ESTATE The Stack has finished stacking. After a short delay, New York City’s first modular apartment building has finally taken shape as the last of the modules were delivered to the construction site in Inwood, New York. The Stack, located at 4857 Broadway, was supposed to be erected in April and completed by July. The project was delayed when the Department of Buildings asked to re-review the permits. “It’s so new, nothing like this has been done before in Manhattan,” said developer Jeffrey M. Brown, adding that the DOB just wanted to make sure all the details were solid. They were, and now, by Fall 2013, residents will be able to move into the modern, pre-fabricated building whose units boast high ceilings, stainless steel appliances and custom kitchens. Brown and co-developer Kim Frank have contracted Douglas Elliman Development to introduce The Stack to the New York City rental market. Leasing will begin in Fall 2013, however, interested parties can register to be added to the real estate company’s priority preview list online at www.thestacknyc.com. The Stack features studio, one, two and three bedroom apartments for rent in the heart of Inwood, the northernmost neighborhood on the island of Manhattan. A short walk from the plush greenery of both Inwood Hill Park and Fort Tryon Park, as well as The Cloisters and historic Dykman House, The Stack is just minutes from Manhattan Transit Authority service 1 and A subways and offers easy access

to the Henry Hudson Parkway, Harlem River Drive and Major Deegan Expressway. The Stack apartments are designed with both elegance and durability in mind, featuring stained concrete floors, high performance aluminum windows and tenant controlled heat and air conditioning. Kitchens feature solid surface Corian countertops with undermount stainless steel sinks, maple cabinetry with stainless steel pulls, GE stainless steel appliances and WaterSense fixtures, while bathrooms offer contemporary vanities with storage and mosaic tiled walls. All residents can enjoy access to a common outdoor terrace, with additional private terrace space for approximately 35 percent of the units. Upon entering The Stack, residents will be greeted with a special concept of a virtual doorman for ensured safety. The 38,000-square-foot concrete and steel residential and retail building is the first of its kind to be built in New York City and was manufactured entirely off-site by DeLuxe Building Systems in Berwick, Pennsylvania. It was shipped to New York City in the form of 56 separate modules that now comprise the seven-story complex of 28 individual apartments with 4,000-square-feet of retail and commercial space on the first floor. An added bonus to the Stack is the art installation-like process that captivated the neighborhood. Every day four new modules were fitted into place and the building took shape before residents’ eyes.

“The neighbors were watching from the sidewalk, the kids were watching from the school across the street and people were watching from cars,” said Brown. “In the first ten days we put together five out of seven floors, all of which were erected by an eightman construction crew and a single crane.” Now that the 56 prefabricated modules (all constructed by hand off-site in a controlled environment) are set in place, move-in time will come quickly. A small team is now combing The Stack, connecting utilities and adding finishing touches, while a façade is affixed to the side of the building. In developing The Stack, Brown and Frank worked hand-in-hand with architect Gluck+ to design the building, explore the options and look at modular manufacturers. The $13 million dollar project is poised to redefine public perception of modular construction, by proving greater efficiency for on-site integration and unit quality control that will not only produce a more premium end product, but will also in turn lead to a boost in affordable housing in New York City. Neighbors and architecture buffs can now view a time lapse video of the construction process online at vimeo.com/gluckplus/ stacktimelapse “This project exemplifies the opportunity to create an exciting design for living while enjoying the benefits and efficiencies of controlled, offsite fabrication. As builders and developers, we are intrigued with this methodology and its application on a multitude of new projects,” said Jeffrey M. Brown, The Stack’s developer and general contractor. Jeffrey M. Brown, CEO of Brown Hill Development, and Kim Frank, co-developer and owner of real estate finance firm MCA, bring a combined fifty years of industry experience and have collaborated on various innovative development projects including the Porter House in New York’s Meatpacking District. • For more information on The Stack, please visit thestacknyc.com

Print Perfect

By Kate Bidinger

e’ve all thought about it. We’ve all been tempted by it. We rarely go there. Prints. Somehow, when it comes time to swipe the credit card, making what seems like a lifelong commitment, we take the safe route. Grey. Beige. White. Prints on upholstery are not just for accent chairs or pillows, and they are a great way to make a bold statement in any space. For the adventurous spirits and complement-lovers, here’s the nudge you need to find the perfect print.

1. Zebra print in light tan and off-white is easy to mix with more vibrant colors (eggplant, jade, magenta), or a muted palate (mauve, taupe). Gondola Sofa, $2299 Wisteria.com

2. A watercolor kaleidoscope pattern is soft and inviting for a peaceful and relaxed living area. The light greys and steel blues on this sofa will look dramatic with a navy or jade wall paint, or keep it subtle with a barely-there tint.

DESIGN 3. Rustic and natural pattern fused with modern clean lines. This sofa will pair nicely with a Noguchi, metal, or reclaimed wood coffee table, depending on your style.

4. An ethnic chic sofa with original Suzani fabric and a hand printed paisley. Perfectly balanced and incredibly cool for the traveled or eclectic motif.

Insider tips: Solids are your friend. Unless you are enlisting a pro, play it safe with plain pillows and throws.

Find accessories in the same style to add to the space. For example, if the fabric on the couch is a nod to deco, then incorporate EFDP WJOUBHF QJFDFT JO QMBDFT like your bar cart, bookcase and artwork.

Metallics will keep it balanced. Whether you have a brass arcing lamp, a chrome coffee table, get something big and shiny in the space so the focus isn’t totally on the couch. One focal point makes you stylish, two amazing items make you legit.

Release your fear of sofa commitment. Let’s be honest, you are probably going to sell it to the next tenant anyways.

Brendan Lyle & Nicole Noonan By Rachel Reda ivorce has become a predominant issue that our society faces today, with almost half of all marriages in the United States ending prematurely. Former Australian attorney Brendan Lyle founded BBL Churchill Group, which is the first consumer lender in the United States to specialize in divorce finance. Churchill works to provide necessary funding for the spouse in need, covering items such as legal fees, expert costs including forensic accountants and even living expenses. They specialize in mid-to-high end complex divorce cases, working to level the playing field in often unfair and complicated situations. Working alongside Brendan, Nicole Noonan, a nonpracticing attorney and the Executive Director of Client Relations at BBL Churchill, guides clients through the emotional roller coaster that divorce often brings. A skilled and passionate matrimonial lawyer, Noonan has practiced with a number of top-rated divorce law firms. She enjoys her current role in divorce finance because it gives her the opportunity to utilize her compassion and help clients stay on their feet while tackling a tough situation. Given her heartfelt dedication to each case, The New York Post has dubbed her the “Fairy Godmother of Divorce.”

BBL Churchill’s CEO, Brendan Lyle is a true innovator in the field of divorce. He founded the company with a desire to provide solutions for the many people he has encountered and works to create realistic options for those going through such a challenging time. “We want to make sure our clients can fund a solid team of lawyers and advisors around them,” Lyle says. “Financial inequality should not result in inequity.” Given his will to assist the less-fortunate individual, the Australian media has dubbed him the “Robin Hood of Divorce.” Prior to founding BBL Churchill, Lyle co-founded Impact Capital Limited, which was Australia’s first and largest provider of divorce litigation finance, and served as the company’s General Counsel and Commercial Director. From 2005 to 2009, Lyle managed and grew the company’s divorce finance department while overseeing $80 million worth of divorce loans. In 2005, he took the company public on the Australian Securities Exchange. Together, Lyle and Noonan have helped countless clients receive their appropriate entitlement during the emotional proceedings that accompany a divorce. The battle that many spouses must fight is relentless, demanding, and emotionally exhausting. BBL Churchill’s lending hand goes a long way in what can be a very chaotic situation. Churchill works to restore a sense of hope in their clients’ lives, which is a key to their growing success. • Nicole Noonan, the “Fairy Godmother of Divorce”
