A Little Help from Joan Not only did she give me the idea for the show, actual gossip columnists breaking original reporting each morning, rather than talking others reporters stories from different website, Joan was the one celebrity that said yes to shooting the pilot.

That is who she was. She always wanted to help out the next generation. Help them to succeed, help them to find success in a tough, tough business.

Before a TV show gets a full season’s order, you make a pilot to show the network what the show will be. It’s not dissimilar to recording a demo in the

Advice from Joan I will never forget the advice she game me, “No one knows nothing. Everyone is scared to say yes. You have to make it hard for them to say no. And if all else fails, remember Sarah Palin ran to be Vice President, you can do a 30-minute silly gossip show.” Boy, was she right!

Recently, when I was a guest on my dear friend Elvis Duran’s radio show, we spoke about celebrities who have disappointed us. While Elvis, bless him, had nothing but nice things to say, his amazing co-hosts, Bethenny and Danielle Monaro both told stories of seeing Ariana being less than nice backstage at a Z100 show! As Joan would say, ‘snap out of it.’ We hear! And talking of Joan, I am hearing that although Kathy Griffin wants to replace the legend on Fashion Police when it returns in 2015, the producers’ first choice is Wendy Williams. Discussions are talking place about moving the show to NYC and giving Wendy, Joan’s seat! Words of Wisdom Someone that could really use Joan’s advice and kindness at the moment is Ariana Grande. Brooklyn charter school brings unique mix of entrepreneurship and innovative education to assist learning

By W. A. Muller hen looking for the perfect school for any child, it is important to look at those where all students can feel secure; recognize their potential; be respected regardless of race, religion or culture; and are encouraged to aim high and achieve. The Brooklyn Charter School (BCS) has been unreservedly committed to these principles since opening its doors to the BedfordStuyvesant community of Brooklyn in 2000. You need only look at BCS’s successful record of transforming lives and outcomes for its students to understand what a truly remarkable school it is. Students of BCS are surrounded by talented and highly-qualified educators who are committed to excellence and the success of each and every child. Its strong and stable leadership forms the backbone of the school; its current Head of School, Omigbade Escayg, was the founding principal, and the Chairman and Vice-Chair have served for 10 and 12 years respectively. Mr Escayg says the close-knit leadership team and teaching facility have upheld the goal that all students aim for success from elementary to middle school, to college and beyond.

Department of Education and one of the highest-performing charters in the New York State. When the number of charter schools in the city reached 100, Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Joel Klein celebrated the momentous occasion with a press conference at BCS, as a model of peace and cooperation between regular public schools and the charter system. BCS is also the only charter with its own business to help support its operations. All profits from its non-profit organization, the Wedding Garden - which specializes in the resale of high-end weddings gowns and accessories - are donated to the school. There is a rigorous core curriculum in ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies, but BCS also understands that a child’s development is about more than just test scores. Project-based learning, inquiry, exploration of the natural world and technologies, and involvement in the

arts like music and dance are all incorporated in the program. Several unique programs and after-school initiatives are also offered. BCS’s all-rounded approach to education provides children with fertile growth opportunities – so their active bodies and inquisitive minds can be enriched. BCS heavily incorporates outdoor education so students can learn they are connected to the greater world and their acts will help to sustain the future. As a Title 1 school, where 71% of families are below the poverty index, literacy is low in such an underserved community. BCS aims to improve this with a literacy initiative that mirrors techniques in Finland, where there are some of the highest performing schools in the world. Two teachers are assigned to each of BCS classrooms, grades K – 5, with approximately 20 students in each, allowing for small group learning and individualized attention. Children develop strong relationships with their teachers, and teachers know the explicit needs of every child; families have come to know and respect this teaching culture and as a result many siblings attend BCS together.

“We’ve anchored core values that enrich the whole child in a nurturing culture that truly feels like family.”

Known as “the Jewel of Bed-Stuy”, BCS with a strong mission, deep-rooted values and unique community spirit – is a school like no other.

As a pioneer of the charter world, BCS is the first charter school of the New York

very year on October 31st, philanthropist and animal advocate Michele Riggi dons a regal wedgewood gown and her best princess smile for her annual Halloween Extravaganza at the Palazzo Riggi in Saratoga Springs, NY. From a glittering full-size carriage with live ponies to attending footmen, Riggi’s Cinderella distributes hugs and chocolate bars to any trickor-treater who steps up to her royal dais. “It’s so much fun to do this for the community,” says Riggi. “This year we will be giving out $100 bills every half hour among the chocolate bars and 101.3 The Jockey will be streaming the event live. So there will be even more excitement this year.” In addition to the cash surprises hidden with the chocolate, there is also a contest for guessing the weight of the giant pumpkin Riggi sits by. The winner will receive a one year membership to the local YMCA. “We will be serving 140 gallons of hot cider and 2,400 hot cider doughnuts as well,” she adds.

But this Cinderella isn’t just about pumpkins and ponies. As a prominent animal activist, Riggi has invited Homes for Orphaned Pets Exist (H.O.P.E) Animal Rescue and their adoptable pets to come be her special guests at the party. “We want our focus to be ‘Adopt, Don’t Shop.’ So many pets need good homes,” explains Riggi, who has worked with the the Saratoga County Animal Shelter and owns 42 pooches of her own, which she calls her “little divas.” She says, “I don’t think a house is a home unless you have a pet.” This year, Riggi is also implementing a Fast Track line for special needs guests, allowing them expedited access to the Saratoga’s Princess. “You have no idea how many special needs kids come to this event and stand in line for an hour, waiting to see Cinderella. It’s heartbreaking,” she admits. “The Fast Track line will be right at the front of the property so anyone with special needs can skip the line and come right up to me.”

Riggi also serves as President of the National Museum of Dance. The museum has honored everyone from Fred Astaire to Ann-Margret Smith for their contriubutions to dance and recently opened the Mr. and Mrs. Ronald A. Riggi Theatre. She says, “The theatre will honor dancers in film and will serve as a black box theater for opera, acting classes and performances.” Michele also supports the New York City Ballet and is a sponsor for this year’s Career Transition For Dancers’ Fall Gala on October 6th, which helps dancers define and develop skills for postperformance professions. Special guests will include Angela Lansbury, who is this year’s Rolex Dance Award Honoree, James Earl Jones, Chita Rivera and Chuck Scarborough. careertransition.org With a heart filled with compassion and the drive to make things happen, Michele’s star shines brighter every year. his is the season where the active trader looks to make his/her mark. It is the time where traders leave the beach and head for the trading desk – be it at the office or at home in the basement. Hunting season is imminent and so the instincts of the fisherman, the deer hunter and equities trader are sharp and ready for action. In my own personal experience I always found trading in the summer to be, quite frankly, the worst time. With little to no momentum volumes would dry up and you feel like you are the only one in the market akin to being on a sailing boat with no wind drifting around. That said, there were a couple of summers where trading was worthwhile as I recall. Regrettably however, both were characterized by major financial events - most recently the 20072008 housing market led collapse in stock valuations. When trading in any environment you are always looking for information to give you an advantage. News, whether on the TV or flashing across the screen can at times give you an edge. Although rare, if you can catch something that no one else notices the opportunity is enormous. One of the best

Volatility and Volume are the Bread and Butter of Trading. The very first thing I look at when sitting down at my desk is which sectors and stocks are up the most and which are down the most. Then I look at volume. Volume is a measure of liquidity and in many cases lets you know if the stock is in play. How many days a stock is in play - whether it is over extended? Does the stock has news coming out, when are the earnings due? What is your track record when trading the stock? Charts and technical information are all part of what a good trader does when entering a position. Happy hunting hopefully it’s a profitable season without a bag limit.

The Columbia University School of Dental Medicine graduate and a United States Navy veteran confides, “I also have lot of blue collar patients who come to me as well as CEOs, models and celebrities.” Toscano says, “Everyone should be able to feel confident about their teeth.” During his time in the service, Dr. Toscano was awarded three Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medals and two Navy and Marine Corp Commendation Medals, one being for the life-saving treatment of a patient. “This gentleman was suffering from severe headaches and no one could figure out what was wrong with him,” remembers Toscano. “I focused on the case and did a lot of tests and found he had a tumor rapidly approaching his brain. We were then able to medevac him out of the Naval Submarine Base in Groton and save his life.” Dr. Toscano has just moved his thriving dental practice to 116 Central Park South, giving his office a 3,000-sqaure foot upgrade. “It’s a new state-of-the-art facility and we can now do even wider ranges of surgery” he explains. he distinguishes himself from other plastic surgeons by adopting a highly natural approach to surgery involving the nose, face and area around the eyes, where less is more. Dr. Pearlman understands that any procedure must be customized for each patient, and take into consideration both function and form. “You should only trust your face to a specialist,” Dr. Pearlman says. “When seeking out a surgeon to operate on your face or neck, it’s crucial to see someone who has extensive training and experience in both facial anatomy and facial treatments. To achieve optimal results, a facial plastic surgeon has a huge advantage over a plastic surgeon.” As a world-renowned surgeon in Revision Rhinoplasty, which primarily involves correcting the functional issues of an overoperated nose, Dr. Pearlman lectures to doctors and scholars around the world. He applies firstrate care and precision to several procedures including Facelift, Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), Otoplasty (ear reconstruction), and Septoplasty (nasal septum surgery).

In addition to his surgical expertise, Dr. Pearlman is adored for his non-surgical aesthetic services. The results from his revolutionary technique in restoring cheek volume have such wow-factor they have in fact become known as “Wow Cheeks™”! In this simple 10-minute procedure, Dr. Pearlman restores youthful apple cheeks and softens the lines from the corner of the nose to the mouth. He has also gained attention for his “Pearl Lift®”, which heightens, tightens and brightens using Ultherapy, Co2 fractional laser skin resurfacing, and Voluma™ injectable gel. After years of seeing his patients battle the effects of aging, Dr. Pearlman decided to design his own highly-effective skin care line. There are eight unique products, including the Pearl Crème, which utilizes authentic crushed pearls, hyaluronic acid, bio peptides and vitamins A & E, and helps to enhance the results associated with the “Pearl Lift®”. As one of only a handful of minerals that have the ability to emit negative ions and far-infrared rays, the Tourmaline gemstone is known for its incredible ability to aid in the detoxification process of the human body. is devoted to heat therapy on the back, spinal area, neck and shoulders through heated flat stones to relax the body and chakra system and open the meridian channels for proper ‘chi’ energy movement and lymphatic drainage. This is followed by a Triple Peel Facial, which begins with a Glycolic Peel and a Papaya Enzyme Peel to digest dirt and impurities and finishes with an acid-free rescue peel. After the dead skin is removed, a pore-by-pore extraction takes place to remove bacteria and excess oil buildup. An Herbal Clay Clarifying Mask is used next to detoxify the pores, followed by a custom blended Ginseng Herbal Moisturizing Mask to instantly sooth and alleviate inflammation. The efficacy of the state of the art facial creams embedded with anti aging stem cells are enhanced with a tourmaline based far-infrared on the face which stimulates collagen growth in the lower epidermal layers while smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. Acupressure point-lifting energizes the face, while removing unhealthy toxins to reveal a healthier, younger complexion. In 90 minutes emerge as a more youthful and rejuvenated self. hile New Yorkers are innately impatient, even a New York minute cannot satiate our quest for instant gratification. But now thanks to advances in aesthetic technology, we can achieve the same lasting effects as a face lift, chemical peel or liposuction without the risks and recovery time that are associated with surgical procedures with virtually no downtime. Here are some of the latest anti-aging and body slimming offerings that plastic surgeons and aestheticians are touting to tone the body and face while combating the signs and effects of age.

I-LipoXcell is a non-invasive liposuction procedure that melts away inches of fat in hard to reach areas within 20 minutes with no downtime

and no side effects. After 5 sessions, patients usually experience dramatic results with an average decrease of 16 and 25 square inches of fat in targeted areas. liposonix.com Ultherapy is a proven non invasive face lift that has been especially effective at lifiting the excess skin on the neck, under the chin and browbone with the same results as a face lift and lasts for over a year with no down time and noticeable results showing two months afterwards. ultherapy.com Dr. Shellie Goldstein offers the Acufacial Resculpting System which is a natural nonsurgical facelift. She starts with an exfoliation and then employs a combination of LED light therapy, ultrasound, micro current and acupuncture and acupressure to stimulate collagen and elastin. hamptonsacupuncture.com Renowned Manhattan dermatologist Dr. Douglas Altchek launched a line of powerful preventative and corrective skin brightening products that use Vitamin C, alpha hydroxyl acid and reservatrol that deliver similar results without a procedure or prescription. ulta com

ew Yorkers always know when fall is in the air, and it wouldn’t be from the warm Indian summer that blessed this Fashion Week, but from the transition from the casual style of summer to the structured styles of fall. There was still a light heartedness approach to fashion on the catwalks with a slew of pretty pastels and nudes with subtle embellished details to structured pieces with cheeky peek a boo cutouts. Bold colors made a splash as well as oversized florals and monochromatic graphic styles.

he dope, the skinny, the lowdown, the dirt… Ever since antiquity, we’ve been consumed by a need to know ‘what’s going down’ with those who are ‘higher up.’ We want hearsay confirmed, laundry aired, scandals unearthed, calumny dispelled; we hanker for a behindthe-scenes look at our celebrities, craving access to exclusive realms. We want to be privy to the private lives of public figures. And - more than anything - we yearn to unveil the inner workings of the very legends that we have so painstakingly shrouded in mystery. Having deified and worshipped mortals, we, paradoxically, wish to see them undone - exposed as the sordidly ordinary human beings they are. In an age devoid of belief in the supernatural, the deconstruction of celebs has become a means of transcendence. Building gods with planned obsolescence, we take pleasure in replacing them, proving again and again that they are no better than us. In this world of fleeting rapture, the gossip columnist is high priest.

When it comes to celebrity news, verifiable information is often as indistinguishable from hype as history is from myth in the bible. Facebook, Twitter, and websites run amok with press releases, sound bites, speculations and fabrications. While each messiah is surrounded by ardent disciples and a core team of apostles – fan base and publicist, respectively – they also bear the cross of having an equally determined horde of detractors, rumor mongers and skeptics. Caught between those who would hail them as saviors and those who wish them crucified, our ephemeral heroes await judgment from the masses; this while the masses wait to be informed by unbiased opinion. The contemporary name for a revelation capable of shifting public opinion is ‘a scoop.’ As for the sacred cabal who make such revelations, they are gossip columnists investigative reporters whose reputations rely on their ability to research events, dig up facts, corroborate stories, verify sources, and beyond that, to deliver news in an eloquent and entertaining manner. 58 • Resident October 2014

Although televised celebrity news has been overrun with presenters who do no more than aggregate and announce, in May of 2013, VH1’s executive producer Shane Farley reinvented the genre – his nuance, ironically, being an ‘old school’ formula: having the show’s researchers and writers double as hosts. The result: The Gossip Table – a hit show newsworthy enough to defend its daily morning timeslot. With witty banter to accompany genuine exposés, the show is no blurbathon. Instead, it presents celebrity insights and socio-political observations in the unassuming guise of – to borrow a refrain from the Man of La Mancha – “A little gossip, a little chat, a little idle talk of this and that.” Upon learning that a rendezvous had finally been scheduled with four of the five GT cast members, I muse: Why not turn the table on my guests by having them respond to a few startling discoveries about their own lives. How hard could it be to unearth the odd indiscretion? Though far from my own area of expertise; the George Plimpton ‘get-in-the-ring-with-them school of journalism’ feels like a worthwhile endeavor.

Since Chloe Melas – Senior Entertainment Reporter at HollywoodLife.com – was the one member that would not be present, I could forget about confronting her with dredged up secrets. That left: Marianne Garvey, Confidential columnist for the Daily News; Noah Levy, Senior News Editor at In Touch Weekly; Delaina Dixon, Cofounder and Editor-in-Chief of Divagalsdaily.com; and the British born linchpin, Rob Shuter – an entertainment columnist extraordinaire who was not only the former executive editor of OK Magazine – taking it from a floundering rag to major contender – but someone who been a power publicist representing Alicia Keys, Bon Jovi, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Naomi Campbell, P. Diddy, Estee Lauder and Esquire Magazine. Realizing that Garvey and Shuter are regular Huffington Post contributors, I decide to call a Huffington blogger I know. Dead end. No insights gleaned. Suddenly, it dawns on me: an ex-colleague from my time in theatre had been slated for a part in Harmony – the stirring new

Our Algonquin circle is in full swing. Marianne – an underdressed Indie version of Dorothy Parker – explains why Delaina is their delegated “eulogy girl” and why she herself has been expressly forbidden to discuss the dead or dying. Rob admits that Delaina does indeed ‘give great eulogy;’ while Marianne is the funniest. “I was runner-up as NY’s funniest reporter,” Marianne proclaims in a demure beauty pageant style, “but only because Judith Regan was judging …the bitch.” As any ballerina knows, it takes a lot of hard work to make something look this easy. While the group does have fun on air, moments after the show ends they’re back on the beat hunting stories. By nightfall each has at least 3 original items to pitch, which then gets edited down to six favorites. “We never regurgitate,” Rob insists, “we break news daily.” Noah is certain that a big reason for their growing fanbase is their ability to share their process of discovery. Deliana agrees it’s their journalistic integrity that made sources like Diamond, the stripper, come to them with her Justin Bieber story.

Though we are both enamored by Sussman and my source extols the production, there is not much in the way of insider information. Six degrees transgressed and still no gossip on The Gossip Table. cially constructed cast of models – although I’m very good looking,” quips Rob, “we’re actually friends who’ve known and worked with one another since, well, even before we started lying about our age.”

On first impression, the idiosyncratic quintet known as The Gossip Table appear like highly charged quirky personalities that are, oddly enough, harmonic as a unit. The flamboyantly charismatic Naughty but Nice Rob Shuter careens into my field of vision, giving way to a grand conductor’s bow that tapers off in a halfhearted curtsey, followed by a waltzed retreat. The ensuing repartee only reinforces the Marx Brothers atmosphere: “We’re not some artifi-

Noah turns his head as if for a profile shot, and coquettishly adds: “We have no secrets from one another. Everyone here knows exactly what I look like with my mask off at 7am. Our on air personality is what we really are but amplified by a hundred – it’s a better version of ourselves”.

“Rob was my mentor and sponsor at OK magazine,” Delaina chimes in. “As I said, we’ve known for a very long time,” reiterates Rob, “Marianne for 15, Noah for 12, Delaina for – gosh I’m old – 20.”

“Actually, I think I’m a better version off air,” interjects Rob, “On air I’m relaxed. In real life I’m far more obnoxious.”

Always on the job, when Marianne saw an Olsson Twin spit her gum onto a table in a Chelsea bar, she went to the trouble of retrieving it. “DNA - just in case the celeb wants to deny the story and sue for slander.” While Rob admits they won’t ameliorate the truth when celebs smell rancid or simply have bad skin (Brad Pitt), they do love both pop culture and celebrities as much as the average viewer: “We are our audience – not stars, not Mean Girls bitching, not talking heads; but simply regular people who feel so extraordinarily lucky to be doing what we love that we pinch ourselves before every show. Imagine, being in the TRL studio overlooking Times Square; living in the center of the universe, the most thrilling city in the world – a city that I especially chose to come to 20 odd years ago.” “As far as New York goes,” adds Marianne, “the constant noise, the people, the breakneck tempo…I need those distractions. I hate being in my own head. And with everything going on here, there’s always gossip and gossip means communication. In reality, everyone loves to connect over what celebrities are doing - even the most educated.” Noticing I had no gossip on them, Noah took pity and offered: “Okay. The biggest story here…? Someone at The Gossip Table is pregnant and I’ll give you a hint: it’s not me or Rob.” Although reluctant to admit it, the members of The Gossip Table are slowly becoming celebrities in their own right. If that’s true, there’s little doubt left that even celebrities can’t get enough of celebrity gossip.

JMR/ James Rizzi paintings in the private dining rooms at the historic Four Seasons Restaurant

Knock On Woodward R

eplete in niche galleries whose names sound like Indie bands – i.e.: the Lodge, Con Artist Collective, Ramiken Crucible, On Stellar Rays – the Lower East Side is in the throes of an artistic Renaissance, a resurgence as vibrant as in the days of Warhol, de Kooning and Lichtenstein. To be fair, the scene was bleaker prior to the advent of the New Museum in 1997. At the time, few would have dared move from pedigreed areas such as Soho to the Bowery and beyond. Woodward Gallery was the exception. Preceding the prestigious contemporary museum, the Woodward Gallery moved from its Soho location – where it had been for 13 consecutive years - to the very spot on Eldridge Street where the twofloor establishment still stands. Since that time, at least 150 galleries have sprouted here. Of course, the owner’s desire to curate dates back even earlier. The Woodward couple began their first showings in their own small Gramercy Park apartment. Admittedly, neither John nor Kristine knew anything about the business in those days. John Woodward was a chef by trade and an artist by education; while Kristine, who had studied medicine, had a fearless abandon when in tame to pursuing anything she felt passionate enough about. Like the beginning of many a ‘bildungsroman,’ their story started with a desire to change the world: the young heroes would eradicate the pretentiousness in the field of art and create an inviting space in which to nurture artists,

educate the public, and empower prospective art lovers. Their history doesn’t disappoint. Looking at how the couple helped Richard Hambleton is enough to convince even the most skeptical of their steadfast resolve in nurturing talent. It wasn’t long ago when Hambleton was an all but

forgotten name by the very circles now celebrating him. Unlike Frank Shepard Fairey and Banksy, by 2005, Hambleton was near destitute, on drugs and selling paintings on a one-off basis just to get by. The renewed interest in him is in no small part due to a sustained intervention by the Woodward duo. Championing his cause prior to any sponsorship, the Woodwards footed his hospital bills, delivered him food on a daily basis, meticulously planned his comeback, and helped bring in the photographer who would capture decades of his material that would otherwise have been lost. That the Shadowman has successfully been resurrected is a feat astonishing enough to have piqued the interest of Oscar nominated director Oren Jacoby who sees Hambleton’s journey as a great subject for a documentary. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the Woodward Gallery recently held a retrospective that designated an outdoor public wall for use by Street Artists. The exhibition included murals by very renowned participants. As for the gallery’s Fall Season, it opened with James Rizzi - aka JMR – a perfect choice for articulating the ongoing dialogue between street art and exhibited works. Concurrent with the Woodward show, works by JMR are being shown at the Four Seasons Restaurant - a similar arrangement having been in effect when the legendary Robert Indiana was having a retrospective at the Whitney.

CULTURE In addition to openings, the Woodward Gallery now has the Ghost Bar - a true New York oddity where a newly designated gallery space has been granted a liquor license. Boasting a range of works that runs the gamut from 1000 dollars to millions, the Woodward Gallery remains loyal to the premise that it can offer something of value to all. “Am I as idealistic as when I started?” Kristine responds to my query, “You know, while we like being a friendly living room, people get this weird notion that they’re performing a public service by informing us what kind of art they collect or value

without any intention of buying. Honestly, galleries need patrons more than lectures.”

corporate portfolios, the gallery is a personally edited anthology of over a century’s worth of great art.

Greeting all who enter the Gallery are the true aficionados of this Chinese corner of the city: the Woodward’s illustrious Shar Peis. “Yes, they are revered in this area more than us or our Warhols,” Kristine admits as she recalls an assortment of locals who came purely to pay their respects to the dogs. Having been an expert on several reality TV shows (i.e. the Novogratz), Kristine knows the value of websites, Facebook and the bevy of social media out there. Specialized in developing private and

Neither a knock-off nor a desperate original, neither purposely trendy nor anti-cool in that hipster way, the Woodward Gallery is at ease with its neighborhood and its age; it is, in short, a door worth knocking on. Friendly, captivating and never cloying or pretentious, it – like the Shar Pei’s – has its owner’s personality. For more information: WoodwardGallery.net

Awards Watch By Norah Bradford

he fall film festival circuit begins with the 39th annual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this September 4, 2014 – September 14, 2014, offering a first indication of the upcoming awards season’s major contenders. From period dramas to biopics, sci-fi flicks and dark comedies, if buzz is any indication, these films should top your early awards season watch list as you gear up for the 72nd Annual Golden Globe® Awards on January 11, 2015, and the 87th Academy Awards on February 22, 2015, televised by NBC and ABC respectively. Film: Foxcatcher Director: Bennett Miller Release Date: November 14, 2014 Movie Company: Sony Pictures Classics Cast: Steve Carell Channing Tatum Mark Ruffalo

Film: The Imitation Game Director: Morten Tyldum Movie Company: The Weinstein Company Release Date: November 21, 2014 Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch Kiera Knightley Matthew Goode Mark Strong Why it’s a Contender: Benedict Cumberbatch (“War Horse,” “12 Years a Slave”) delves into the life of troubled genius Alan Turing, the British mathematician who helped hasten the end of World War II by cracking Germany’s codes, but who was later prosecuted for homosexuality, then illegal in the U.K. Cumberbatch stars alongside Keira Knightley (“Atonement,” “Pride & Prejudice”), playing Joan Clarke - one of Turning’s co-workers after WWII who eventually becomes his fiancée. The film won the People’s Choice Award at TIFF – often a predictor of Academy Award success.

Why it’s a Contender: This star-studded true-life character study has been cemented as an Oscar contender at its Cannes coronation, where it was nominated for the prestigious Palme d’Or and earned Bennett Miller the Best Director prize. Starring an against-type Steve Carell (“The Way Way Back,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Crazy Stupid Love”) as a schizophrenic millionaire, John du Pont, who takes a toxic interest in the life of troubled Olympic wrestler, Mark Schultz, portrayed by box-office champ Channing Tatum (“21 Jump Street,” “The Vow”). Film: St. Vincent Director: Theodore Melfi Release Date: October 24, 2014 Movie Company: The Weinstein Company Cast: Bill Murray Melissa McCarthy Chris O’Dowd Scott Adsit Naomi Watts Why it’s a Contender: Beloved comic actor Bill Murray looks to be at his best in this hilarious film which had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Murray plays a grizzled alcoholic retiree who is forced to endure the company of a 12-year-old boy who moves in next door and we follow their evolving unlikely friendship. He clashes with the single mom, played by Melissa McCarthy (“Bridesmaids”), and tolerates the company of few, apart from a pregnant Russian stripper, played by Naomi Watts (“The Impossible,” “King Kong”).

Film: The Theory of Everything Director: James Marsh Release Date: 7 November, 2014 Movie Company: Focus Features; Universal Pictures Cast: Eddie Redmayne Felicity Jones Charlie Cox Emily Watson Simon McBurneys David Thewlis

Film: Still Alice Directors: Wash Westmoreland Release Date: 2015 Movie Company: Sony Pictures Classics Cast: Julianne Moore Alec Baldwin Kristen Stewart Kate Bosworth

Why it’s a Contender: Eddie Redmayne, who sang his heart out in Les Misérables, plays a young Dr. Stephen Hawking, fighting his fatal diagnosis of an illness he is diagnosed with during his years as a cosmology student at Cambridge in the 1960s. This biographical drama directed by James Marsh is likely to pack a powerful emotional punch as it portrays Hawking’s loyal love for fellow student, Jane Wilde, played by Felicity Jones (“Like Crazy”).

Why it’s a Contender: Still Alice centers on Julianne Moore (“The Hunger Games,” “The English Teacher”) as Alice Howland, an accomplished professor who early in the film experiences troubling neurological symptoms. Soon her doctor has diagnosed her with early-onset Alzheimer’s and the film follows her struggling to preserve as much of her life as she can. Most striking about the film is Moore’s performance, which, after premiering at TIFF, has been touted as being in a Best Actress Oscar race up against Reece Witherspoon in “Wild”.

Why it’s a Contender: Based on the best-selling memoir by Cheryl Strayed, the film follows Reese Witherspoon (“Walk the Line,” “Mud”) hiking from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail in 1995, trying to put her life together in the wake of a series of tragedies. Having already premiered to great reviews in Telluride, particularly in regards to Witherspoon’s compelling performance, the film also got a rousing response at the Toronto Film Festival.

Film: Wild Director: Jean-Marc Vallée Release Date: December 5, 2014 Movie Company: Fox Searchlight Pictures Cast: Reese Witherspoon Laura Dern Thomas Sadoski Film: Unbroken Director: Angelina Jolie Release Date: December 25, 2014 Movie Company: Legendary Pictures Cast: Jack O’Connell Garrett Hedlund Domhnall Gleeson Jai Courtney Miyavi

Why it’s a Contender: Based on the 2010 non-fiction book by Laura Hillenbrand, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption, the film revolves around the life of former Olympic track star, Louis “Louie” Zamperini (1917 – 2014), who was taken prisoner by Japanese forces during World War II after spending 47 days drifting on a raft in the Pacific Ocean. Academy Award winning actress, turned director, Angelina Jolie also produced this epic drama. Film: Gone Girl Director: David Fincher Release Date: October 3, 2014 Movie Company: 20th Century Fox Cast: Tyler Perry Ben Affleck Carrie Coon Rosmund Pike Neil Patrick Harris Why it’s a Contender: Adapted from Gillian Flynn’s best-selling thriller novel and directed by David Fincher (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”), Gone Girl sees Ben Affleck (“Argo,” “Pearl Harbor”) portray former journalist Nick Dunne and Rosamund Pike (“Jack Reacher,” “Pride & Prejudice”) play his resentful wife Amy. The film follows the couple’s marriage breakdown that leads to the disappearance of Amy, with Nick implicated in her apparent murder. Film: Birdman Director: Alejandro Gonzalez Release Date: October 17, 2014 Movie Company: Fox Searchlight Pictures Cast: Michael Keaton Zach Galifianakis Edward Norton Emma Stone Naomi Watts Andrea Riseborough Amy Ryan

Film: Boyhood Director: Richard Linklater Release Date: July 11, 2014 Movie Company: IFC Films Cast: Ellar Coltraine Patricia Arquette Ethan Hawke Lorelei Linklater Why it’s a Contender: Filmed over 12 years, with the same primary cast, Boyhood follows the life of a boy, Mason, in Texas, from childhood through adolescence. Mason naturally ages on screen – he makes and loses friends, endures his parents’ divorce, and falls in love. Linklater uses cultural references such as iconic songs and Television programs from the past decade, which audience members can recognize and relate to, which help denote the passing of time. It takes a visionary artist to conceptualize and execute a project of this scale – and he is sure to be recognized for it this awards season.

Why it’s a Contender: Michael Keaton (“Batman,” “Batman Returns”) plays a washed-up actor famous for playing an iconic superhero who must overcome his ego and family trouble as he mounts a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim his past glory. Both Edward Norton (“Moonrise Kingdom”, “Fight Club”) and Emma Stone (“Magic in the Moonlight,” “The Amazing Spiderman”) have also played iconic comic book characters and struggle alongside Keaton with self-realization and love. The film was selected as the opening film at the 71st Venice International Film Festival.

WHERE TO STAY

The Stunning St. Regis Aspen By Lisa Loverro

A

n iconic hotel in the heart of downtown Aspen, the St. Regis Aspen, part of the Starwood Hotels and Resorts, brings together everything I love about this tony town in the mountains – hot tubs, mountain views and rustic charm. And, although I visited in the summer, it’s the ideal place to book a room during the ski season as it sits at the base of the slopes and is what I would call “mountain chic” at it’s best. The hotel has a contemporary feel in a mountain setting with rich wood panels, warm earth-toned room accents and a Remède Spa, complete with an oxygen lounge, which was recently named the #1 hotel spa in the world by Travel + Leisure. Textures play a big part in the room furnishings with leather beds and desks designed by Ralph Lauren and marble bathrooms. There are a variety of categories ranging from their Classic Guest room to a 2,000 square foot Presidential Suite. The lobby bar is the perfect spot to grab a pre-din-

ner drink and it’s where you’ll find most of the hotel’s guests mingling with each other trading tales of their daily activities. There is live jazz music in the lounge on weekends which I thoroughly enjoyed as it added that extra special ambience to the property. The St. Regis Aspen offers some cool programs as well. The hotel is a dog-friendly resort and has partnered with a certified professional dog trainer to assist in training guests, and their dogs, in the

art of skijoring (a Scandinavian winter sport, in which athletes are pulled on skis by either a horse, dog, or motor vehicle). If you don’t have a dog, no worries, a local shelter will let you adopt a furry friend for the day! In the summer and fall months they’ve also recently launched a wine country program for a day-long journey venturing to the nearby vineyards and farms of Colorado’s Western Slope that make up the state’s burgeoning wine country. The hotel might also be one of the most family friendly in town. The SPG Kids Pass program is an all-inclusive dining program created specifically for children and their parents. For a flat daily rate, children (ages 12 and younger) of Starwood Preferred Guest® members can take advantage of all-inclusive access to a variety of dining options, including children’s menus, buffets (when available), and beverages at select participating resorts. Simply the Best, Simply St. Regis By Rory Winston

L

uxurious, opulent, posh… Discerning travelers have become all too familiar with high-end superlatives. More often than not these adjectives are the plastic wreaths strewn on the corpse of a once glorious institution, the solemn engravings on the headstone of a property where personality has all but been replaced by a generic form of distinction. Devoid of character, these exorbitantly priced monstrosities – often the effete members of some highly successful franchise - line the corridors of most big cities. Not so the eccentric heirs of the divinely mad hotel group bearing the illustrious eponym, St. Regis. From the New York flagship, built by the mogul John Jacob Astor IV – an investor/author/lieutenant colonel who died aboard the Titanic – to the boutique hotels spanning the globe today, St. Regis is elegance with signature style. The luxury 5 star St. Regis Singapore is no exception. An ivory proscenium of curlicues dance in a world of alabaster hemmed with gold as staircases rise like white drapes softly edging their way over the frosty mirrored glow of chandeliers: walking into the St. Regis Singapore is like walking onto a film set designed for a Baz Luhrmann production, one where the director has been tasked with paying homage to the

roaring 20’s while still retaining a contemporary edge. From a grand ballroom with skylights to housing one of the finest private art collections in all of Asia, the property is not only in close proximity to the Singapore Botanical Gardens but is a veritable oasis in its own right. An unabashed sense of entitlement anoints one upon entering any one of the suites. The quality

is pervasively colonial and it is easy to see why the Brits had such a hard time relinquishing their hold of the Island. King sized beds with signature linens, Chinoiserie silk wallpaper, Silk throw pillows (by none other than Jim Thompson), rich fabrics, design furniture, a glamorous free standing bathtub set adrift amidst a French marble interior – quiescent grandeur is clearly de rigueur in every corner of the expansive realm.

Shinji by St. Regis partner Kanesaka is the domain of the renowned Chef Shunsuke Kikuchi whose artistry is evident the moment one approaches the hinoki sushi counter. It is clear from both the high caliber of service as well as the tantalizing dishes that Japanese heritage is alive and well at the St. Regis. As for a European gastronomic experience, the hotel boasts both an Italian dining establishment as well as a French one. While La Brezza indulges in robust organic signature dishes from every region of the country, Brasserie Les Saveurs is haut cuisine with a contemporary nouveau touch. Overlooking tropical gardens and sparkling pools, the brasserie not only has a dazzling array of exquisite dishes but sports a wine list that easily contends with any of its prestigious European counterparts. As for desserts, why not stroll over to the Drawing Room in the lobby with its panoply of pastries, teas and coffees – all of which can be enjoyed in the comfort of plush armchairs or sofa. But St. Regis is not just a splendid place to spend the evening and dine; it is also designed to pamper its guests in unparalleled ways. Located on the second floor of the hotel, the Remède Spa is a venue for a battery of treatments that range from ancient Roman to Chinese Dynasty, and include highly effective interdisciplinary approaches. With an indoor tennis center, a state-of-the-art fitness center and a tropical Spa pool adorned in sculptures, shades and cabanas, the St. Regis Singapore is a celebration of easy living. Sitting at the Astor Bar, indulging in some vintage champagne it’s easy to understand that St. Regis is more than the sum of its lavish amenities and proffered lifestyle. It is a journey, an extravagantly personal excursion through an alternate universe – one where the best of several epochs and cultures have been thrown under one roof. Considered a global food capital, Singapore is an Asian hotbed for cuisine – one that maximizes on its own Chinese, Malaysian and European traditions. Nowhere is this zeal to achieve culinary perfection more apparent than in the four distinct kitchens of St. Regis where an all out attempt is made to evoke the best of their respective worlds. Yan Ting focuses on authentic Cantonese dishes and its tasting menu is one I would highly recommend. Its scrumptious specialties are unlikely to be found anywhere else on the planet. As for the setting, it is a finely honed fusion of both ancient imperial and contemporary themes and one that recalls just how many centuries it had taken to evolve one the most interesting but underappreciated traditions.

hile our perception of optimal urban societies may have evolved from ‘melting pot’ to ‘salad bowl,’ we often forget that cultural diversity is not a phenomenon reserved solely for western cosmopolites such as New York and London; rather it exists the world over in equal if not more elaborate measure. Nowhere is such multiculturalism more apparent than in Singapore where populations from Malaysia, China, India and Europe interact with one another on a daily basis. More profoundly, many of the locally born Singaporeans are members of a unique people, Peranakan – a culture that has assimilated disparate traditions from Chinese to Malay, Portuguese, Indonesian and Dutch. Absorbing the best of this indigenous world without sacrificing an iota of comfort, the Intercontinental Singapore has earned its illustrious reputation as a high-end property imbued with history. It is, in fact, the only 5 star luxury Hotel in all of Singapore committed to preserving Peranakan heritage. Located in the heart of the shophouse-style setting of the Bugis Precinct, Intercontinental Singapore is an architectural triumph whose design brilliantly integrates into its surroundings while managing to retain the

TRAVEL feel of a cloistered realm. Tastefully decorated with heritage woodcarvings and ornaments, the hotel is a bastion of East-meets-West and ancient-meets-contemporary. Complete with wooden louvered windows that overlook a row of 1920’s shop houses dotting the street below; the property exudes timeless charm. Homage to local culture, however, does not end with décor. With three delectable restaurants from which to choose, the Singapore Intercontinental celebrates diverse culinary traditions in its choice of chefs. While Olive Tree Restaurant sports a cornucopia of international dishes in buffet form, Chikuyotei serves some of the most authentic Japanese food to be had on the island. As for Man Fu Yuan Chinese restaurant, its sumptuous signature dishes paired with a battery of the fine teas makes for a most memorable Cantonese experience. No sooner does one leave the hotel grounds than one finds oneself immersed in a colorful world of garments and textiles. A myriad of exquisite fabrics and densely populated alleyways draw visitors into a part of the city that boasts one of the oldest architectural heirlooms in the country, the Sultan Mosque. From here it takes no time at all to find oneself in a maze of boutiques, bars and cafes where fruits like the local durian intoxicate with their scent. Returning to the hotel for a quick dip in the outdoor pool is a gratifying way to cool off after such an excursion. Complete with live entertainment, the

lush garden landscape surrounding the pool is a perfect setting for enjoying a cocktail before embarking on a new adventure. But whether one ends up frequenting the highly interactive Chinatown Heritage center (with its enticing look into the past) or whether one decides to take in one of the many performing arts that

the city has on offer, ending the night in one of Clarke Quay’s ritzy clubs, the hotel’s 24 hour complimentary state-of-the-art fitness center makes for an ideal segue. Blending British colonial sensibility with more traditional oriental textures and tones, the perfectly up to date suites with large bathtubs and beds evince a lasting sense of harmony. In addition, the hotel is an IHG Green Engage Hotel member, ensuring that sustainability and environmental values are on their list of priorities. Sitting in the lobby bar with its evocative skylight and pillars, it’s easy to understand how Singapore was born to dream big. As a center for disparate cultural motifs, it has done an astonishing job in fostering the best in each tradition and creating a space for dialogue between the present and the past. In a speech made in 1976, the former US president Jimmy Carter had been quoted saying, “We (America) become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.” The same could easily have been said for Singapore. And, while Singapore is known to have the second largest Ferris wheel in the world, when it comes to truly unobstructed views of Singapore as a country, the one had at Singapore’s Intercontinental is hard to beat. Trails of the Inca By Hillary Latos

rom the legendary Spanish quest for the fabled “El Dorado” city of gold to the buried cities under Lake Titicaca, the mysteries of ancient Peru have fascinated explorers, treasure hunters and conquistadors over the last 20,000 years. The beautiful Peruvian landscape is characterized by dense forests, wild mountains and majestic lakes dotted with remnants of ancient civilizations which hold the keys to wisdom bestowed by the gods. To truly immerse yourself in the history of the Incan culture start at the capital of Cusco. This sacred ancient city lies 11,154 feet above sea level, and was formerly the important capital of the Inca Empire in 1100 A.D. Ancient Cusco was closely linked to the Sun and chosen as a sacred city as it functioned as an observatory for marking solstices, equinoxes, and eclipses to determine the Incan calendar and the accurate timing of Inca religious and secular activities. The city was laid out in the form of a puma, a sacred animal to the Incas that symbolized their Empire. The belly of the puma was formed by Cusco’s main plaza, the river Tullumayo was its spine, and the great head of this gigantic beast was formed by the 15th century fortress of Sacsayhuaman. This is an amazingly well kept fortress that shows the advanced Inca architectural

techniques with huge cut-stone blocks fitted together so tightly that mortar was not needed. Located in the heart of Cusco’s historical district, around the city’s main square, Plaza des Armes, the JW Marriott Cusco is perfect spot to explore this fascinating city. Built on the

grounds of the 16th century Saint Augustin Convent the JW Marriott Cusco was meticulously restored to preserve the history and culture of the city while creating a luxury 5 star destination. The stunning lobby and expansive courtyard reflect the elegant Spanish Baroque style characterized by the Colonial rule with

TRAVEL homage paid to the Incan culture including original Incan walls and historical tours detailing the archaeological finds onsite including a well preserved mummy. The luxuriously appointed rooms feature oversized marble bathrooms and tufted pillowtop beds with oxygen enriched systems to assist in acclimating to the high altitude. Or simply relax and unwind in their indoor pool and spa that features treatments that incorporate ancient Incan rituals and healing ingredients. Dine and relax in their casual Qespi bar and lounge or experience fine Peruvian cuisine at the Pirqua restaurant in a regal setting overlooking the Baroque cloisters in the stately courtyard. The flavorful Peruvian cuisine is somewhat of a melting pot of culinary tastes brought by the many immigrants who have come to Peru blending Amerindian and Spanish cuisine with influences from West Africa, Arabia, China and Japan resulting in exotic dishes that have familiar flavor overtones with an Andean flair. If you are feeling adventurous in the culinary front, Peruvian cuisine is about as exotic as it gets where the indigenous specialties are alpaca stew and grilled cuy, guinea pig cooked in spices. For less adventurous types one of their most popular dishes is the Lomo Saltada, a Peruvian version of beef stirfry with a soy sauce sautéed beef tenderloin sautéed with vegetables and chili peppers. The spicy and bold flavors are only enhanced by an authentic Peruvian pisco sour, which are often infused with herbs or muddled fresh fruit and the drink of choice amongst the locals. Embedded within a dramatic landscape of the basin of the Amazon and the peaks of the An-

dean mountains is the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu rising nearly 8000 feet above sea level. It’s considered to be one of man’s greatest architectural and cultural achievements which demonstrated their devotion to the Gods and was created as religious retreat inhabited by scholars and royals. The site was so sacred that it was abandoned by the Incans in the 1530s when they feared the

Spanish would find and destroy it in their conquest. Though Machu Picchu can be reached by hiking the Inca trail taking anywhere from three to seven days, it is also accessible by the Inca Rail train which traverses through the gorgeous and lush sacred Urubamba Valley to Aguas Caliente. From there, a bus winds through the mountain offering unsurpassed views of the magical valley and mountainous landscape. One of the most impressive characteristics of Machu Picchu is the architecture that used massive blocks of granite that was transported high into the Andean mountains and finely cut using bronze or stone tools to precisely interlock like a huge jigsaw puzzle. As the Sun God was the most important deity in their culture, this site was chosen for its position to the sun. Visit the solar observatory that rises up from a large pyramidal table-stone where sacrificial ceremonies were performed by an Inca priest in an attempt to prevent the complete disappearance of the sun. Though Machu Picchu is one of the most well known and studied sites, there are thousands of unexplored and undiscovered ruins that still exist far beneath the Amazon or buried under modern civilization including the Lost City of Gold. As you return home you will be forever changed by the natural beauty of Peru and legacy and mystery of the ancient Incan civilization that has inspired explorers, historians, and authors for centuries. Here, 3000 years of wine making tradition – from ancient Greek to Roman to Turkish, French and Spanish - collude to create some the best wines in the world, many of which are still known only by connoisseurs. Relying on grapes like the earthy licorice toned Aglianico and the velvety ruby colored Negroamaro and the spicy but fruity Nero di Troia, the region is responsible for phenomenal reds; while its Fiano – a white with apple and pear overtones – and Moscato Bianca – a highly aromatic light bodied wine whose use is said to date as far back as ancient Greece – lend authority to many of its whites. Although Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon may be the most commonly known of the locally produced wines, there is no getting around the fact that anyone genuinely hungry for the best in local wines should make it a point to become familiar with Aglianico, Fiano, Moscato di Trani and Nero di Troia. Nowhere are these brilliant assortments more pronounced and plentiful than in Bocca di Lupo – an estate set in the hills of the Murgia region. A farmhouse of all white stone sits atop the chalky soil of vineyards still touched by Vulture, the volcanic region to its south. The temperatures at Tormaresca’s Bocca di Lupo Estate are varied. With 90 degree summers and winter frosts, the delicate aromas of the grapes are maximally enhanced. Utilizing Moscato di Trani DOC, the estate also creates a special after-dinner wine known as Kaloro which many believe to have (like Moscato Bianca) its roots in Ancient Greece. The cool sera breezes and abundant sunshine creates an atmosphere that is not only conducive to the creation of fantastic wines but is also a joy for those who wish to visit. Apulia teams with exciting places to visit and it is precisely in this area where the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II built the wondrous octagonal Castel del Monte, considering the region the finest in the entire realm. This is no small claim coming from an Emperor who was not only in charge of a vast territory but one who was known to be very open minded and worldly. Of course, if ancient text is anything to go by, wine in the

region has held it charms earlier than 400 BC, the period in which the Greek historian, Thucydides, announced “The people of the Mediterranean region began to emerge from barbarism when they learnt how to cultivate the olive and the vine”. That cultivation - having started thousands of years ago - continues unimpeded in places like Bocca di Lupo. Here, the timeless art sits perched on hills that are bathed by the sea’s humidity and dried by the mineral rich soil below. For more information: http://tormaresca.it/en/home/

Designed in collaboration with Arne Hasselqvist, the architect responsible for the first villas on the nearby island of Mustique, the cottages speak to the elegance and simplicity of old world island charm. With just 22 villas and cottages, each one was carefully designed with consideration about position and lay out, ensuring breathtaking views and the utmost in privacy. Whether in an elevated cottage on

one of the various bluffs around the island or in a luxury beachfront villa, all rooms which have been recently refurbished are generously appointed with super-king size beds, lounges, both indoor and outdoor dining areas, as well as ample sun-decks or beachfront gardens. While phones and Internet are frowned upon at PSV, modern amenities and comforts are at your disposal with Bose iPod docks, Nespresso

TRAVEL coffee machines, fine Italian linens, and BVLGARI toiletries available in the rooms. Petit St. Vincent prides itself on outstanding hospitality and attention to detail, ensuring each guest feels pampered and tended to. Their extremely amiable and welcoming staff, mostly old-timers from the Grenadines, are ready to please and provide an unforgettable stay. With a staff-to-guest ratio of more than two-to-one, no request goes unmet. From customized day trips to a romantically planned candlelight remote dinner for two, all can be arranged for the perfect holiday experience. Boasting almost two miles of white sand beaches, PSV is a beachgoers paradise. Frolic in the pleas-

antly warm turquoise waters and enjoy just about any water activity imaginable, from snorkeling, kayaking, and scuba diving to Hobie Cats and Windsurfs. For those looking to explore in style, charter a yacht to discover regional attractions like Tobago Cays and Sandy Island, as well as the many bays and crayola-bright reefs along the way. Adventure seekers must not miss out on the deep sea fishing for a day of fun-filled memories. Lounge on your ocean facing terrace and savor the gentle breeze cooling off the warmth of the tropical sun, or partake in sundown cocktails from the privacy of your deck while admiring the stunning Caribbean sunset. For further relaxation sign up for yoga on the beach or head to the spa for a rejuvenating treatment, a perfect end to your

day. The treetop Balinese-inspired spa at Petit St. Vincent offers an extensive selection of massages and facials, manicures and pedicures. From a simple facial to a deep tissue massage, a plethora of revitalizing treatments are available. Regardless of your choice, the lush and tranquil surroundings themselves set the stage for the perfect mental and physical restorative getaway. If all the relaxation and aquatic activities have opened up your appetite, feast at one of the island’s two restaurants featuring casual yet elegant and delectable dining. The mellow and laid back Beach Restaurant, complete with a live lobster pool, is the quintessential island chic atmosphere where you can dine barefoot in the sand. For a more formal and refined option, Pavilion Restaurant perched atop a hill overlooking the picturesque harbor, offers savory gourmet cuisine utilizing only the most fresh organic vegetables, fruits, eggs and herbs from the island’s expansively abundant gardens. Whether on a honeymoon, seeking an all island rental for a group, or looking to disconnect from the world, Petit St. Vincent is the ultimate Grenadines private island resort that transports you to a blissfully simple and more peaceful world. It exudes a powerful allure, a place where time seems to slow, where your cares melt away beneath the sizzling Caribbean sun, all while surrounded in an elegant and charming paradise. n the big island of Hawaii adventure awaits where the different microclimates and forces of nature characterize the island- from the snow capped vertiginous peak of Mauna Kea to the flowing lava of Kilauea volcano and the tropical rainforests of Kona. Unlike its developed sister islands of Oahu and Maui, the big island still retains its unspoiled rugged beauty that existed since its inception thousands of years ago where you can drive in solitude without any signs of civilization against a dramatic backdrop of the deep blue ocean, mountain peaks, and unending fields of rust red black lava rock. The most ideal spot to find your slice of paradise is along the sunny Kohala Coast known for its placid white sand beaches and aquamarine waters making it the ideal spot to explore the island’s most luxurious oceanfront resorts. For family friendly options the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort and Spa and Hilton Waikoloa Village offer an abundance of activities and amenities for relaxation or fun in the sun. The Marriott is set on 15 acres and faces the Anaeho’omalu Bay beach and ancient fish ponds, with access to a private sheltered beach. The lush tropical pool is surrounded by fragrant flora and fauna to capture the essence of the exotic beauty of Hawaii. For foodies, embark

The Hilton Waikoloa Village is a mega destination onto itself with its own monorail system to transport guests amongst its 62 oceanfront acres landscaped with lush tropical gardens and wildlife. An expansive 4 acre ocean fed lagoon is the centerpiece of the property that offers a white sand beach with snorkeling and kayaking activities amongst the tropical fish and sea turtles. Get up close with the dolphins at Dolphin Quest where you can wade in shallow and deep water where these loving animals will swim beside you. Take in the glorious sunset views from the oceanfront Kamuela Provision Company serving Hawaiian specialties such as ahi poke, Kona lobster, grilled Kona kampachi, or Maui sugar scrubbed ribeye. For some of the best views on the island stay in the exclusive Makai rooms in the Lagoon tower overlooking the dolphins and the awe inspiring Pacific Ocean.

These elegant and spacious rooms feature private lanais with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean or lush Hawaiian gardens. Bask in paradise amongst their 32 tropical oceanfront acres choose from swimming with the sea turtles in the white sand lagoon with calm aquamarine waters, or simply laze by the curved heated pool. Enjoy a romantic beachside dinner at

one of the island’s top award winning fine dining restaurant, Brown’s Beach House, where the menu changes daily to reflect locally purveyed seafood and seasonal ingredients that have a distinctive Hawaiian flair. Indulge in spa treatments island style at the luxurious Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. Every full body treatment incorporates the soothing natural elements of Hawaii from black lava salt, hibiscus and crushed macadamia nut scrubs to fragrant botanical oils. This 28,000 square foot spa is nestled amongst tranquil tropical gardens with meditative trickling streams. Enjoy

your treatment in a private outdoor thatched roof hale (hut) to become one with nature as any signs of stress melt away. Treatments range from traditional aromatherapy and deep tissue to sacred ancient Hawaiian healing methods like the lomi lomi, and Eastern style Ashiatsu massage with deep foot pressure and reiki to channel energy and rid the body of blockage to emerge a new rejuvenated self. Enjoy the deep blue ocean and take in the majestic Kohala coastline on Ocean Sports’ sunset champagne sail cruise and you may spot dolphins and whales that playfully swim alongside the vessel. No trip would be complete without an authentic Hawaiian luau, which was first created at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in the 60s and quickly became an island tradition. Experience the magic of Hawaii as you feast on an abundant oceanfront buffet of traditional Hawaiian dishes like roasted pig, lomi salmon, island fish, and sashimi and learn about the history and culture of the big island through native dance, music, and fiery entertainment while learning how to hula dance. SHARING THE FLAVORS OF PERU WITH CHICAGO By W. A. Muller et ready to embark on a culinary journey through Peru at Tanta (118 W. Grand Ave) in Chicago. Tanta is dedicated to sharing the flavors and culture of Peru with the people of Chicago, serving authentic Peruvian dishes and beverages in an approachable, casual and colorful downtown setting. A collaboration between Chef Gaston Acurio and VBD Group, LLC (Veronica Beckman, Vincent Beckman, JP Bitting, and Brian DeNicolo), Tanta looks to take each guest that walks through the doors on an adventure through Peru’s cuisine. The menu, created by Acurio and Tanta Chicago chefs Victoriano Lopez and Jesus Delgado, takes diners on a voyage through Peru via its food. From the Pacific Ocean, through the Andes, to the desert, to the Amazon, Tanta celebrates the diverse landscape and ethnicities that make up Peru’s culture. Emigrants from China, Japan, Spain, and Italy melded their respective dishes with the native Peruvian cuisine to create the unique melting pot of Peruvian cooking that keeps boiling to this day. We start with an array of cebiche dishes, Tanta’s fresh and light takes on this

Peruvian staple featuring the day’s freshest catch tossed with lime, aji (Peru’s ubiquitous yellow chili) and a number of other unique and ever-changing ingredients such as mango, coconut milk, peanuts, ginger, and bonito. In addition to cebiche, Tanta offers an extensive sampling of the culinary riches of Peruvian cuisine, from tiraditos, or Peruvian sashimi with assorted toppings, to a sampling of Peru’s street foods, such as empanadas, anticuchos

and sanguches (sandwiches). Tanta’s mixologists created a menu of Peruvianinfluenced beverages that focus primarily on pisco, a grape brandy made in the wine regions of Peru, enjoyed by Peruvians and their South American neighbors for centuries. For private events, Tanta boasts a wide array of options. Whether it’s a casual corporate dinner, social gathering or an exciting dinner at the chef ’s table, Tanta’s team of experienced events staff can help to design the perfect party for any occasion. Tanta can accommodate small parties for the Chef ’s Table, groups for family-style seated dinners and larger parties for standing cocktail receptions. The restaurant is available for partial or full event buyouts as well. The private dining area is located on the second floor in the form of a stylish, modern lounge with direct access to a rooftop deck and garden complete with an outdoor bar where guests can enjoy downtown city views. The Proper French Brasseries By Hillary Latos

hile the world often looks to the Parisians as barometers of style, one import that has stood the test of time is the classic French brasserie, which hasn’t changed since its inception in the late 1800s when these locales rose to prominence. Step back in time to the Paris at the turn of the century when Art Nouveau really was nouveau, where revered figures from the arts and literary worlds spent hours pondering this new age of thinking at literary cafes like Les Deux Magots or Café Flore in Paris’ Rive Gauche. Recreating the romanticism of that bygone era is the Upper East Side’s Orsay and 1920s inspired Brasserie Ruhlmann at Rockefeller Center. Designed by Jean Denoyer, Orsay was inspired by the Parisian cafes and brasseries frequented during the Belle Epoque. Art nouveau chandeliers from Paris were imported and recreated to give the amber lit hue, dark mahogany walls are balanced by brass fixtures and a mosaic fan patterned tiled floor, and French doors with the same curved lines of the era lead to a sidewalk terrace that’s de riguer for a classic French brasserie.

Even if you can’t hop on the next flight to Paris, Orsay’s brasserie classics are as authentic as sitting at a café on Blvd St Germain. Customers swear by the famous French cheese soufflé from their sister restaurant La Goulue, which is the specialty of the house. Their soupe a

l’oignon gratinee is one of the best in the city as well as their steak tartare “la Goulue” that is perfectly seasoned with shallots, capers, cornichons, mustard, chive and parsley. Francophiles will delight in their house made velvety foie gras served with apple chutney as well as

DINING their Marseilles based bouillabaisse with fish and shellfish served in a rich fish stock. Each evening a daily special graces the menu ranging from osso buco, tournedo Rossini- a succulent cut of beef tenderloin with seared foie gras and a port reduction, roasted duck a l’orange, or poached seafood with a garlic saffron aioli. While French brasseries are known for their raw bar menu, Orsay features an extensive selection choose from little necks, oysters, crab claws or jumbo shrimp all delivered daily. Other exceptional choices that French Chef Antoine Camin is known for include the Japonais tuna tartare, Noix St Jacques with sautéed scallops and pancetta risotto, slow braised lamb shoulder, veal sweetbreads with a morel and Sauternes reduction, steak frites, and guinea hen breast roasted with foie gras. Fast forward to the next revolution in French design to the Art Deco inspired Brasserie Ruhlmann located in the heart of Rockefeller Center. Named after Emile- Jacques Ruhlmann, the legendary French furniture and interior designer who epitomized the glamour of the 1920s art deco era. To recreate the casual yet sophisticated elegance of the classic French brasserie, Chef Laurent Tourondel of BLT fame has taken a modern approach to his beloved French bistro fare reminiscent of his homeland. Enjoy the bustling city views from its expansive street side terrace overlooking the

iconic Rockefeller Center or dine inside the warm and inviting room reminiscent of yesteryear. Feel the romance of Paris in their stylish dining room bathed in a soft golden hue stemming from brass lighting fixtures against dark mahogany walls, red velvet chairs and white table cloths. The dinner menu spans from an extensive raw bar of shellfish and sashimi style raw fish and sushi to casual bites, and fine dining options with carefully prepared fish and fine grilled steaks which are the hallmark of Laurent Tourondel.

A specialty of the house is the big eye tuna tartar laced with a yuzu soy sauce, the Parisian steak tartare, and the perennial French croque Monsieur made with jambon Paris with melted gruyere and a savory béchamel sauce. As Chef Tourondel has a flair for fish, the sushi selections are on par with the best in the city. Layers of flavors come through their modern takes on classic rolls like the textural crispy rock shrimp and spicy tuna roll, coconut shrimp tempura roll coated with macadamia nuts and avocado, and the yellowtail with jalapeno, ginger and avocado. The beef short ribs bourguignon has been slowly braised to caramelized perfection in a rich red wine reduction, while the delicate dover sole meuniere is crisped and balanced with a tart lemon caper soy browned butter. For lighter bites try the shrimp and lobster roll with the unexpected Asian inspired flavors of kaffir and curry and aromatic tarragon or the spicy Asian chicken salad. Of course the drink of choice is a glass of Provencal rose. As the French are known for being perfectionists, especially in the worlds of food and fashion, Orsay and Brasserie Ruhlmann are prime examples of their how the beloved French cuisine just gets better with age. Quality over Quantity B

Longtime restaurant duo, Ben & Jack Sinanaj, made sure that the menu fits the high-standard the restaurant holds and most certainly beefy, with a large selection offering from the famed Porterhouse to the Prime New York sirloin. To ensure quality, Ben & Jack’s Midwestern prime beef is dry aged on the premises for 21 to 28 days. The porterhouse for two, three, or four is served alongside its king-sized bone, and is cooked to perfection ensuring that the meat is silky and lean. The menu also sports other favorites such as the Chilean Sea Bass and Grilled Norwegian Salmon while other steakhouse traditions, creamed spinach as well as various styles of potatoes among others, round out the menu. To accompany the meticulously assembled menu, an excellent wine list is in place, offering great wines complementary to Ben & Jack’s outstanding steak. The list boasts in its substantial variety, showcasing Europe’s finest, as well as Californian beauty.

en & Jack’s is no strange name to steak connoisseurs around town. The masculine establishment situates in the heart of Flatiron District on 5th avenue, only seconds away from Empire State building. While tourists may pass and gawk, true steakhouse enthusiasts recognize Ben & Jack’s instantly for its signature Porterhouse steak, the nostalgic and gorgeously adorned interior, as well as the incomparably welcoming and satisfying service. The bustling restaurant sits on Fifth Avenue between 28th and 29th street, where Empire State building is within sight, and has become one of the top steakhouses for affluent Manhattanites as well as out of town, fervent steak-lovers. The popularity is without a doubt deserving, as the restaurant routinely turns out quality beef, while nostalgically resembles any old school steakhouse with its classic dark, wooden decor that still clearly states the Ben & Jack’s spirit. The elegant dark wood furnishings and large mirrors create a perfect ambience that’s both warm and welcoming, yet at the same time quiet and sophisticated. The expansive, 10,000-square-foot space seats 400 guests and features two full bars. With its two floors, Ben & Jack’s is able to also offer five separate private dinning rooms and upstairs seating perfect for not only an elegant night

udding love, curiosity, discourse and a night of fine dining have gone hand in hand for ages. Whether it’s the warm candle against a dimly lit background, or the precisely spaced seats that bring the pair closer, these details are what diners look for in a romantic dinner for two. At Tuome, however, not only are the romance factors on point with its vintage yet chic decor, but also Chef Thomas Chen’s emphasis on succulent cuisine prepared through a precise process, puts the love and pursuit of good eating, center stage. Located in the East Village, Tuome welcomes guests to its fine menu showcasing a spectrum of dishes that not only amaze with meticulously calculated arrangement of spices, but also impresses with the bridging of Asian culinary disciplines with New American style. Upon entering, guests find themselves mesmerized by the vintage and carefully crafted decor. The modern, clean restaurant is decorated with vintage elements, such as a wall of 1920’s wool spools from a knitting factory, or bar chairs repurposed from a university lab; all accompanied with Asian elements in a subtle manner. The uniquely sectioned menu separates dishes into four categories: cold small, hot small, big and sides. A careful glance at the menu reveals attentively selected seasonal spices, fresh ingredients and Asian accents. Many items on the menu look rather familiar at first: watermelon with ricotta, corn

seasoned in curry, or rice with kale; however, the unique pairing of spices and fresh ingredients is what makes Tuome stand out. Each pairing only showcases Chef Chen’s obsession with balancing flavor and texture; while the same watermelon salad marries crunchy puffed farro, the kale and rice are creatively paired with tangy Chinese sausage - lap cheong. Among these delicately arranged dishes, one shining star is evident: the Pig Out For Two, featuring Berkshire pork prepared with ginger and thyme, then cooked in duck fat for hours. The crowd-pleaser is complemented with two bowls of spicy peanut noodles and gained instant recognition since it first debuted. Not only is the dish itself exquisite, it also invites guests to taste the result of the slow and delicate process used to prepare many dishes on Tuome’s menu — The XO sauce on top of grilled octopus takes about two hours to prepare, while the oxtail inside the fresh spring rolls is cooked for twelve hours. Providing quality service and marvelous cuisine in the East Village, Tuome deserves to be the next hit gastronomical destination.

SD26 Turns 5 By Hillary Latos

B

efore the days of Top Chef and celebrity chef TV fame, there were the legendary restaurateurs like Tony May who was instrumental in shaping the landscape and direction of New York’s culinary scene. Starting with operating the Rainbow Room in 1968 to creating the first fine Italian dining establishments, Palio and San Domenico that earned a coveted 3 stars rating from the New York Times. His foresight and modern thinking and reinterpretation of contemporary Italian is what made him so successful in one of the most competitive industries in the city. While culinary talents reign in the May genes, over the last half decade he established the more contemporary SD26 with his vivacious daughter Marisa, who is excited about their five year anniversary in the Flatiron district and is looking forward to the next 20 years. “We’re very excited for our 5 year anniversary it’s been such an amazing journey. We were very lucky to have had a 20 year run on Central Park South, and when our lease was up we wanted to build a younger, sexier, more contemporary San Domenico that would take us through the next 20 years. We didn’t want to forget the past but we wanted to shed that formal image we had built and we’ve been very embraced by the neighborhood. We built an incredible wine bar, an open kitchen with a chef ’s table, a salumeria, and a balcony to bring in the feeling of a theater.

104 • Resident October 2014

Our chef Matteo Bergamini has been with us from the beginning starting at the Central Park South location and then training in formal French under Daniel Boloud to coming here and has been instrumental to the success of the restaurant which is the continuity and personal touch that makes us stand out. If you don’t take risks in life you will never know. In the 5 years we have always stayed true to who we were and what we’ve built in the city as restaurateurs. You really have to keep an open mind and evolve and change in this industry as the customer evolves. Our anniversary begins September 15 which will run through October 15. We’ll be creating special prix fixe menus at a lower price, as well as wine tastings with the producers, it’s our way of celebrating with the community. Italians love to celebrate with a party filled with great food and wine and of course great company. Maybe one day we will expand, but we love NY and this has been my father’s city for 51 years, I don’t think we will ever leave NY.”

A specialty of the house is Dahiwala - a slow simmered baby goat stew accompanied by yogurt mixed with turmeric, garam masala and Awadhi spices. Vegetable entrees showcase Anand’s balanced approach to spices, including Karari Bhindi - spicy crisped okra, Chatpati Gobhi Lehsuni - cauliflower with garlic tomato sauce, and Kairi Ki Dal- tangy cumin yellow lentils balanced with mango.

hile most Americans cannot distinguish between the different regional nuances in Indian cuisine, Awadhi cuisine represents the Uttar Pradesh and is influenced by Mughal slow cooking techniques with rich and full bodied dishes stemming from the Nawabi region. As a celebrated chef of Indian cuisine, chef and restaurateur Anand started with the New York Times twostar rated Moti Mahal Deluxe restaurant on the Upper East Side along with Bhatti Indian Grill in Curry Hill, before launching his latest flagship fine dining restaurant Awadh on the Upper West Side. To ensure authenticity in recreating the depth and intensity of Awadhi cuisine, Gaurav Anand traveled to the Nawab city of Lucknow to immerse himself in the dum pukht technique of Awadhi cooking, which involves slow cooking in a traditional sealed handi over a low flame for many hours. The intimate yet elegant bi level space was designed by Laura Weatherbee. Dramatic double height ceilings showcase an 8 foot cascading bubble glass chandelier providing a soft glow in the dark paneled dining room beset with tufted banquettes and gold foiled walls. The menu highlights Awadhi specialties such as Awadh Murgh Tikkablack pepper and pomegranate marinated chicken, and grilled lamb kebabs originally

Aromatic Awadhi entrees cooked in the dum pukht method include Nali Ki Nihari- lamb shanks simmered overnight, Mahi Musallam - whole fish of the day crusted with turmeric and a masala spice mix, Lagan Ki Raan - leg of lamb cooked with a spice

Anand’s culinary range showcases his affinity for seafood in dishes such as Tawa Scallops with celery sauce, Uri Jheenga - coconut shrimp curry, Ajwaini Jheenga - grilled prawns marinated with carom seeds, and a sublime Malai Lobster Masala grilled lobster with saffron. These delicately prepared dishes are only enhanced by the range of wines that have been carefully selected by the acclaimed sommelier John Slover, formerly of Daniel and Le Bernardin which together create an unforgettable dining experience.

illiamsburg has witnessed many changes. The artsy crowd’s arrival and their eventual Bushwick-bound journey, along with new, shinny condo-developments in the neighborhood, breathed life into the hipster-mecca and shaped it into what it is today — a mixture of the high and the low. What comes with the mixing of both cultures and worlds is the trend of bridging high-end dinning with casual, dive-y vibes. Riding this trend comes Extra Fancy, where $4 Bud drafts share menu space with quality local rosé wine. Serving excellent New England inspired delicacies, Extra Fancy in Williamsburg is perfect for an intimate night out. The bar-restaurant hybrid is the latest work from partners Mark Rancourt and David Brilliant of Macao Trading Co. and Robert Krueger, (currently the restaurant’s Beverage Director), of Employees Only, who, in fact, named Extra Fancy after a seafood-condiment bottle. Its high-energy Afro-punk soundtrack and the charming seaside New England decor only heighten the experience as diners and drinkers alike engage in casual, lighthearted conversations. Having a close connection to cocktail guru Dushan Zaric, Rancourt and beverage director Krueger create a drinks menu that highlights a variety of spirits and signature cocktails. Although an upscale clam shack, Extra Fancy’s menu still offers a casual and familiar feel, serving popular items like the lobster roll and the fish and chips. One look at the menu and guests will notice the special focus Extra Fancy has on reviving traditional vegetables and spices, as well as utilizing seasonal ingredients. Building on top of a hot menu, the intimate spot also boasts a Raw Bar menu that fulfills all your oyster/clam cravings. From clams to crab, Extra Fancy also offers combo deals befitting to all the occasions. While fusing two ends of the spectrum can sometimes lead to a clash, Extra Fancy, however, makes it work and proves that high and low can go hand in hand. How to Design the Perfect Bedroom By Niki Cheng

W

e spend at least 1/3rd of our life in bed so when it comes to bedroom design, comfort always comes first. Getting a good night’s sleep can have tremendous effects on our health, our well-being and even our looks (it’s not called beauty sleep for nothing!), so why not spend a little extra time designing a bedroom that helps promote relaxation? Here’s my simple 3-Step process for designing the perfect bedroom:

If the wall across from the bed is all windows, you can still place the TV on the either side of the wall next to your bed or on the corners of the wall, so long as you have a mounted TV that can rotate in any direction you want! If you have enough space, get a comfortable side chair and a side table and place them in the corner of the room at a 45 degree angle from the bed or beside the window with a view. If you don’t have the space and you plan on reading in bed, you’ll need a cushy headboard or pillows to support your back and neck.

Step 1: Determine Where to Place Your Bed The bed is the primary furniture piece in the bedroom. otels and condos have long been two separate places: but the Naftali Group is shaking things up in the Gramercy District.

The Manhattan-based developer recently debuted its 234 East 23rd Street condominium development, a striking 20-story new tower slated to house 57 luxury residences. But, given today’s buyers demand more than a nice home, Naftali filled the building with boutique hotel-inspired amenities and lounge spaces to make the entire building feel like an inviting cocoon. Residents will enter through a double-height lobby designed by Rottet Studio - the first-ever partnership with a residential real-estate developer – which has also worked in refined hotel spaces including The Surrey in New York and the St. Regis in Aspen. Naftali also worked to make sure that the building, which should be ready for occupancy in late 2015, fit in with its surroundings. “We made a conscious design decision to move away from glassy buildings and more toward classic, authentic architecture,” said Miki Naftali, Founder and CEO of the Naftali Group, which owns, operates and is developing 12 residential properties across the city. “The result is a building that has strength and substance and yet has beautiful architecture.” The residences, which go up three-bedrooms, range from 602-square-feet to more-than 2,300 square

feet, boast floor-to-ceiling casement windows. Prices range from around $800,000 for a studio to more than $6 million for a four-bedroom penthouse with including sweeping outdoor spaces. Many of the residences have private terraces. Solid white-oak floors add a warm aesthetic to the units, while ornate detailing and crafted finishes come together with flexible layouts, interspersed with unique build-outs and alcoves. The stylish-and-modern kitchens feature the brands today’s buyers seek: Bertazzoni and SubZero appliances, for example. There are even Bosch washers and dryers, making trips to the Laundromat history. There’s plentiful storage, ample work surfaces and flexible layouts that can accommodate everything form a casual family meal to an elaborate dinner party. The building’s stately bathrooms offer clean, contemporary lines and elegant materials, including marble-lined floors and walls, custom casement-style glass doors and custom-made vanity units featuring Carrera marble.

Amenities include a second-floor garden terrace, a barbecue grill and an outdoor kitchen, as well as a library with a billiards table, kitchenette/ bar, and modern fitness center. There is also a doorman, concierge service through Abigail Michaels, individual private storage units and bicycle storage. “Gramercy is one of Manhattan’s most desired neighborhoods, and 234 East 23rd embodies everything that has traditionally been so soughtafter in the immediate area, including architecture with real character,” added Alexa Lambert, Executive Vice President of Stribling Marketing Associates, the exclusive sales and marketing agent. “This building is all about the details and exquisite finishes, and the sum of its parts equals a very sophisticated living space that we are predicting will be very popular with both seasoned and first-time buyers.” For more information: 234e23.com

Catering to New York’s New Wave of Property Investors ʦ̱ W.A. Muller

ith a keen eye on the real estate marketplace and a wealth of knowledge on key market trends, 30-year-old Dylan Pichulik observed an untapped need for property management catered towards the growing number of foreign investors in New York City and decided to step in. To respond to this market demand, Pichulik founded XL Real Property Management, New York City’s leading property management firm focused on providing streamlined oversight for individual units owned by foreign and local investors.

“I began to see a segment of the market that was not being targeted. There was an apparent, and growing, demand for property management geared toward foreign investors, who wanted to ensure their investments were looked after and cared for when they couldn’t be in the city,” said Pichulik. “I decided to start XL Real Property Management to help give this growing portion of the market peace of mind that their investments are secure and their interests were represented. “

Since Pichulik started the company, XL Real Property Management has seen exponential growth, swiftly becoming the largest and most recognized manager of individual investor property in New York City. The team’s combined 25 years of experience in the industry allows XL Real Property Management to provide expert attention to every property need and a thoughtful servicedriven approach. As a result, the company has become an indispensable asset to owners who benefit from owning New York property from anywhere in the world, eliminating the added stress of handling sometimes complicated daily operations, condo board relations, renovation oversight, rent collection and property repairs. With an ever-growing portfolio, the company sees no sign of slowing down. States Pichulik, “Our growth has been really incredible. We started with 12 clients in 2012, and now have over 1,000. Our clients come from all over the world – China, France, Israel, Brazil, Russia, Ukraine, and Venezuela.”

XL Real Property Management provides a wide variety of unique services for clients including: rent invoicing and collection; expense payment; tenant approval and requests; maintenance requests; lease and lease renewal preparation; board application assistant for new tenants/renewals; apartment turn-over services; insurance procurement; renovation oversight; unit owner meeting attendance; facilitation of state and federal tax filing preparation; routine site visits and inspections; monthly and annual financial reporting; and house rules implementation. “It is important for us to show the foreign investors that it is possible to receive a high level of responsiveness and specialized service even when they may be thousands of miles away,” added Pichulik. “We allow for tenants to be less wary of renting investor units, while aiding overall building operations by establishing a local representative. This way, everybody benefits.” For more information:
