A True BELLA RAGAZZA By Christopher A. Pape

Trish Regan, as we say in Italian, is a beautiful woman - both literally (she is stunningly beautiful with long brown hair and sparkling green eyes) and personally. She has also worked hard to lead a beautiful life: star anchor, loving mother and wife, and former opera singer are just some of the descriptions that apply to her. She’s also working hard, achieving a Regan (a self described wonk) is becoming a household name. Her career requires a rare balancing act. In addition to her daily show on Bloomberg TV, she led the network’s coverage of last years’ Presidential election (including two full weeks of anchoring both parties’ conventions), reported a piece for Bloomberg’s Pursuits that required swimming with whales (and Richard Branson) while expecting her third child, and she’s now working on a new d o c u m en ta r y that she b el i eves w i l l rival her past successes with the Marijuana documentaries that have been CNBC’s all-time most successful.

Resident: What does being a New Yorker to you? Trish Regan: I’m not a native New Yorker, though I certainly feel like one now. I went to school here, to Columbia, and I have loved the city since I was a kid. I grew up in a very rural area; in a small town of about 5000 in New Hampshire. It was great. You knew everyone and everyone knew you. But, I can remember coming to New York when I was about ten years old and seeing Times Square. I thought to myself, this is just great. There’s so much energy, so much activity. I suppose I like extremes – and New York and New Hampshire are most be a New Yorker, you ask? Well, you know New Yorkers. (laughs) We tend to think we’re living in the center of the universe. And, I’m pretty sure we are. R: You have a bit of an unorthodox reporting. Can you tell us about that? TR: At 13 years old I decided I wanted to be an opera singer when I grew up. I know, some kids want to be athletes, others want to be movie stars and hey, some even grow up wanting to become news anchors, but, I, (she smiles) wanted to be an international opera star. I have always loved music. I began studying piano at 3 years old. In fact, I actually knew how to read music before I knew how to read English. I was always around music, my father played the piano, and it was just part of my life. In high school I signed up for singing lessons and the teacher was an opera singer. She was pretty shocked when I started singing. I had never been to an opera, but, somehow I knew how to imitate an operatic voice. It turned out that at 13 years old, I had this really developed lyric coloratura soprano. She encouraged me to pursue it. So, I tried to understand it. I read everything I could, listened to every recording in our school library, and practiced religiously. I studied languages, history, piano, music theory, everything that related to opera because, I was making a commitment. That said, what you want when you’re 13

years old and when you’re at a Conservatory at age 20 are sometimes quite different – at least in my case.

year I interned at NBC Nightly News and suddenly, everything made sense. I’d found my calling.

R: At 20 you decided not to do opera? What was the impetus for that?

R: How did you land that job?

TR: I was a very intellectual teenager; it wasn’t like I was doing this in a vacuum. As much as I loved opera, I also loved history, I loved the study of the economy, I liked politics – there were a lot of things I was interested in. I am a naturally curious person, and my curiosity fuels me every day in journalism. My job is to explore, experience new things, meet new people and I love all of that. So singing was great, but by the time I was in 20, I realized that although I liked opera, I probably didn’t love it enough to make a life of it. Still, those years of study didn’t go to waste. I learned to speak a lot of languages because of singing; I also learned a tremendous amount of self-discipline because of singing. R: Did you know what you wanted to do? TR: down with my uncle who was an economist and learning the term “opportunity cost.” To pursue opera meant I was giving up something else. I decided to transfer from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston to Columbia University in New York. A funny side note for you, on the day I received my acceptance letter to Columbia, an opera house that I had auditioned for in Germany, offered me a contract for the year. The timing was an interesting coincidence but, I had already made my decision. R: news? TR: community through internships during school summers. First at a hedge fund and then as an analyst in at Goldman Sachs. At Goldman, I worked on the emerging debt markets desk and really liked it. I was analyzing the economic and political consequences of what was going on in Latin America and thought that was what I was going to do upon graduation. They made me a job offer, and I had every intention of going, except in my senior

TR: I just sent in an application and told them I would work every single holiday! They needed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s covered, and I said, “I’m your girl.” So I interned there, running scripts, answering phones and getting the chance along with producers and correspondents. For me, it brought back memories. My mother had been a journalist. She wrote feature pieces for the Boston Globe and I used to go out with her on some of these stories as a child. I suppose that journalism was always something I understood. You could say, it was in my blood. R: journalist? TR: Yes. I thought, wouldn’t it be great if I could combine all of these things that I love into one. I knew a lot about the markets because of my work in banking. I knew a lot about how to be comfortable in front of people because of singing, and I knew something about journalism thanks to my mom. It really was this ability to combine all my skills. R: How did you move up the ladder in TV? TR: out in California at CBS MarketWatch. While I was there I did everything I could; I was anchoring on the local station in San Francisco, I was reporting for CBS MarketWatch, a national syndicated show at the time, and soon thereafter began reporting for CBS News on economic issues. First from San Francisco, and then from New York. R: Why did you come to Bloomberg? TR: It was an opportunity to have a much greater impact. We have a loyal, intelligent deeply about the economic issues facing our country. They want to understand the personalities behind the people helping to shape the business community and they want to know as much as they can about future. And we have the resources to do

Resident May 2013

that with nearly 200 bureaus worldwide and roughtly 2000 reporters. While so many organizations are shrinking their news coverage, we’re growing ours - investing in news. So, for me, it was a chance to help inform people at the highest possible level, equipped with the best data and reporting.

It was also a chance to broaden my reach internationally. We’re in more than 300 million homes worldwide and streamed live online, on your ipad and iphone. I wanted to help stimulate the conversation that business leaders are having and, at Bloomberg, I get the chance to do that every day. R: What do you do exactly at Bloomberg? TR: I anchor Street Smart from 3-5pm daily. I also anchored all out political coverage in last year’s election and am currently working on several documentaries and other long form vehicles for Bloomberg. I’m incredibly involved in the entire editorial process, which is a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week endeavor. I’m always looking for good stories, I’m always talking to my sources, always thinking about who my viewers might want to hear from, and I’m always thinking about how to make the show most relevant and exciting for viewers. I’m fortunate to have an incredible team around me. I have a phenomenal Executive Producer, Jason Farkas, who is super creative, very talented and works closely with me to make sure we put the best business show on the air every day. I’ve also Johnson, who’s a ton of really pushing Bloomberg forward, making us the go-to destination for viewers who want smart conversation and fascinating story telling.

It’s a very exciting time to be here. R: Why are you successful? TR: I’m a hard worker and I’m never afraid to take chances. I also have a wonderful husband, James Ben, who is incredibly supportive and encouraging to me every step of the way. He’s an investment banker so, he’s pretty familiar with long hours himself but, he has always made time for me. James understands how demanding my job is, he respects what I do and he knows how much I love it. His support has given he’s a big part of why I’ve succeeded. That said, I’ve also been pretty darn lucky. R: Is there anyone that’s given you great advice along the way? TR: Sure. Bob Schieffer from CBS’ Face The Nation has been a wonderful mentor. He’s an incredible journalist with a real sense of core journalistic values – something you don’t always see these days as news becomes more entertainment driven. Besides the gave me some good advice for being on TV. at CBS News one day and he showed me a video of him as a young man in his early days at the network. It didn’t sound like him at all. He was missing his trademark Texan accent! I remember him laughing and saying, “see Trish, this is why you can’t try to be anything but you.”

Viewers will respond to authenticity, he promised. But, if you try to be something you’re not, there will always be a divide between you and the person you’re talking to on the other side of the camera. Bob is truly the same person on and off air. As for me, I took his advice to heart and have remained a what-you-see-iswhat-you-get anchor. R: What do you do on your free time? TR: You mean besides change diapers? (laughs) I spend a lot of time with my family.

I have two beautiful little girls, Elizabeth and Alexandra, and a new baby boy, Jamie. We do a lot together as a family. The Museum of Natural History and the Children’s Museum on the Upper West Side are huge hits with my girls. We also like to get them outdoors as much as possible and even got Hampshire this winter. R: What new things are you working on? TR: I’ve got a lot of projects going on. In addition to anchoring “Street Smart” from 3-5pm during the close of trading every day, I also report for our documentary unit one hour special on the casino industry that

looks at the challenges and opportunities the gaming business now faces. I’m also working on a documentary about the marijuana industry becoming a more acceptable, legitimate business. And, by the time this shooting an hour special called, “The Real Brazil.” (I’m actually heading to Brazil in a few days for a week of reporting there. It was early June and I was desperate for a break from the hectic pace of New York and longing for the beauty of nature. I also needed a new location for my series of mystery novels; somewhere that would be interesting to my readers. Somewhere remote but sophisticated. Unspoiled, yet luxurious. collage of memories: a charming main street, excellent skiing, beautifully prepared food and a herd of majestic elk.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I had been there a few years ago, in winter. Would this charming little town be equally picturesque in the summer? I began to plan the trip. My son, William, a professional photographer was available to take photos for my book research. And my other son, twenty-one year old Beau was just getting out of school. I suddenly realized we could schedule a family vacation! So on a from New York’s La Guardia airport with a high sense of adventure. Hole was daunting. The pilot had to land the plane into the geographic equivalent of a soup bowl. Alp-like peaks encircled a lush green valley and just as the wing tips cleared the Teton Mountains, the plane dropped like a stone onto a small runway. Disembarking we looked at the majestic snow capped mountains – a scene of post-card prettiness.

in expensive cowboy chic: leather chairs and western art. There are many high-end luxury places to stay in the area for those with billionaire taste. We opted for something a tad less ostentatious but sublimely comfortable. The Snake River Lodge, in Teton Village is about 12 miles out of the center of town - a complex of condos, hotels and shops with a ski tram to take us to the summit for spectacular views. It turned out to be a wonderful choice for a family vacation; something for everyone. There was a collection of shops, and restaurants of all levels of formality and informality, a grocery store, outdoor clothing stores, expedition After we checked in, we agreed to all explore on our own and meet for dinner later. The boys set off immediately for the Mangy Moose Saloon, for burgers and a beer. I lolled in the indoor 17,000 foot spa, taking in

(Snake River seems to be a theme here) Situated on the picturesque town square, it is a mecca for people who care about food. The portions were robust. The boys chowed down on glazed pork chops, buttermilk black pepper mashed potatoes and succotash, while I opted for fresh salmon and walnut sprinkled salad. Deserts were diabolical: rhubarb pie, cherry cakes and famous “Eskimo bars” of chocolate caramel and vanilla ice cream. After dinner we took a stroll around the town. Jackson has a genuine cowboy feel with none of the campiness. It seems more like a Western artist community than anything

"Miss Kitty have you ever thought of running away?" I looked around at the beautiful landscape and the answer was, yes. else. The lovely painting and watercolors in the galleries depict the local wildlife and landscapes. Pretty hand-crafted objects in the gift shops seem unique and special. Exhausted from the fresh air, food and travel we retired early. The next day our exploration began in earnest. William and I drove the short distance to the Grand Teton National Park to take photographs. We saw many remnants of the past. Conestoga wagon wheels, preserved in the arid climate, still lying in the wild grass. Deserted settler cabins from the 1860’s dotted the landscape. As we ambled around in the sagebrush, a bison wandered by and glared at us with his angry little eye. We cut him a wide berth. There is an astonishing feel of isolation and simplicity. At a tiny settlement of Bondurant, (population 93) we stopped for a coke and a look around. A resident chatted to us, saying he hadn’t been to Jackson Hole (34 miles away) in a decade. And yet the abundance of culture is impressive. At the National Museum of Wildlife Art, situated up on a butte with a panoramic view of the valley, the boys and I ate sandwiches out on the picnic tables then toured the galleries. The collections

feature many local artists and recognizable names as well. It was a visual feast, from the stark landscape photos of Ansel Adams, bucolic scenes by Albert Bierstadt and Herman Herzog, wildlife painter Ken Carlson, Frederick Remington. Thousands of paintings depict the rugged landscape and natural beauty of the West. Over the next few days we settled into a lifestyle of comfortable outdoor adventure. We hiked, rode the ski tram to more than 4,000 feet and stood gawking at

of the mountains. As the paint-ponies slipped and slid on the rocks, picking their way over the rough terrain, our Stetsonhatted, chap-wearing guide started crooning a song “I Should Have Been A Cowboy” about the legendary Sherriff Matt Dillon and his ladylove Miss Kitty. One line got my attention… “Miss Kitty have you ever thought of running away?” I looked around at the beautiful landscape and the answer was, yes.

stopped for a catered lunch on the banks of the river, and were pelted by a sudden hailstorm. My sons were astonished at the grape sized pellets that cascaded and stung, only to be replaced by brilliant sunshine a few minutes later. Spain, during the early spring rainy season is much like the Caribbean… if you don’t change. Some people never go to a destination a second time believing that once you’ve seen a place, you’ve seen it. That attitude holds no water when it comes to Spain. From the south to the mid-country and on to the Basque Country in the north, Spain is as different as the languages spoken throughout the land… and there are many languages and variations thereof. While Spanish is the prime tongue used in the greater majority of the country, other such as Aranese in Catalonia; Basque in the north; Catalan in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands; and Galician in Galicia.

Liberty Airport, an easy to reach departure It is also a more passenger friendly port than LaGuardia which seems to be forever locked Previous visits to Spain were always by ourselves with our own agenda and time schedule. We were able to spend time wherever we wanted, but did miss out on a lot of what Spain has to offer. This time out we hooked onto a group tour by Insight Vacations, i n s i g h t v a c a t i o n s . c o m starting out in Madrid. The Spanish capital is a great place to spend time and see sites ranging from the fabulous Prado Museum to the Royal Palace, a minifountains and great restaurants. How the Spanish ever developed the habit of eating dinner after 9 p.m. is a mystery to most Americans who are ready to chew the woodwork by that time. We’ve found in the past that motor coaches

used by most group tour operators are little more than a land variety of airline coach seats… too small for American butts and little to no knee room. Insight’s buses are the antithesis of this. There are fewer seats, wider from arm rest to arm rest and enough knee room to practically go horizontal in comfort. That was appreciated on a long drive from Madrid to San Sebastian in Basque Country. This beautiful little city, known as the “Pearl of the Cantabrian Coast” is nestled on a shell-shaped bay framed by hills on either side. The Old Quarter is a delightful page out of Old Spain with its numbered balconies, held in the Plaza de la Constitucion. dining but that is easily rivaled by Basque Country and San Sebastian in particular. Here, however, a guest at an eatery can sit and relax without the imperious stares of a Parisian waiter. Following an overnight in San Sebastian the coach made its way along the rugged

WHAT’S NEW

IN TEL AVIV By Norma Davidoff

The short answer is lots! Locals recommend HaTachana (the train station); Habima’s new addition; the Tel Aviv Museum’s dramatic extension; and Neve Tzedek a quaint reviving neighborhood. Many are experiencing them through the city’s bike share program. Here’s a taste of What’s New. HaTachana Perched just where Jaffa begins is the original rail station of the ancient port of Jaffa. This was the train terminus when it was constructed in 1892. Near the Etzel House Museum by the beach, you cross the street to railroad ties and palms that frame the entrance to HaTachana. All the low, one-story buildings that dot the area served other functions when the railroad ran. Built in that era, the stone buildings with red tiled roofs have been restored, the courtyards revitalized. Striped umbrellas

and wooden benches complete the scene. All repurposed and moved, small shops sell amusing home goods, clothing, and jewelry. The boutiques of successful Israeli designers Michael Negrin and Ronen Chen offer style with a twist. What long ago was the Wieland Tile Factory is now Studio Noa, retailer of Israeli-made sports clothes. On its wall are cartoons left by the British Army Club in the early 1940’s. Most buildings have plaques stating their original purpose. HaTachana intersperses original machinery with explanations.

Touches like these make the place inviting and historically relevant. Around the Freight Terminal Building and like Italiana Nella Stazione and Vicky Christina, which serves bread on what looks like a railroad tie. It is an agreeable destination; in evening, downright romantic. HaTachana pulsates with people at night and on weekends. Since opening in 2010, it has helped bind back ancient Jaffa with its suburban neighbor that overtook it, Tel Aviv.

ZAMBIA

& MALAWI BY NORMA DAVIDOFF

I

t was a moment indelibly engraved in my brain. Zebras galloping through a swath of green alongside terraces at a hotel in Zambia. On our arrival at the hotel, a giraffe was loping along, munching leaves from the tops of tall trees. Zebras racing past guests at a posh hotel? Giraffes at its entrance? I felt like Alice falling into Wonderland. My companions, who had been to Africa before, pooh-poohed my excitement. “Oh, you’ll see so much more of this, and it will be so much better in natural surroundings.” Nevertheless, that startling incongruous scene was the perfect introduction to the magic I experienced in Zambia and Malawi. And more for the fearless: On Livingstone Island, people attempt to swim in a lagoon, called the Devil’s Pond, at the edge of the falls. So far no humans have been lost. We were based at Tongabezi Lodge; another night at its even more romantic counterpart, Sindabezi. Our individual thatched huts, with showers and tub out of doors, had views of a close-by island. Dinner by candlelight was in keeping with the wildness and wilderness of it all. Vanessa Parker, whose husband owns Tongabezi, has created a beacon of enlightenment and hope in the area. In a country crying for education, her school, Tujatone, provides local under-privileged kids with a balanced education. It is so impressive, that Susan Sarandon, Anthony Robbins, George Clooney, and others have donated to it. After Tongabezi, it was time for the prime reason for coming to Africa: to take a safari, which means “journey” in Swahili. Safaris, on land, on river, and at night meant ready, aim, and shoot… and shoot again… all with a camera, of course. In Zambia, at Luangwa Safari House, we had both elegance and a prime opportunity to view animals from the camp chairs around the plunge pool or from the terrace where we dined. But there was much more up close. We loaded into a 4 x 4 both early morning and late afternoon to truly partake of this animal world. It’s one thing to see photos, TV, or a zoo. It’s another to experience, live, the snort of a hippo, the shriek of a monkey, the bellow of an elephant. On our river safari, the hippos were all about, looking like logs. Here’s a banded mongoose (the teeniest mammal in the park) and a new-born puku antelope on spindly legs. We hear

a bird’s territorial call -- a warning. A baby elephant gives of all these goings-on, if it hadn’t been for the excellent guides, all attached to the places I stayed. Did you know that crocodiles can go 18 months without eating and that the species has lasted 65 million years?… that zebras recognize their young by smell and striping. I loved the red-billed hornbill and the lilac-breasted roller. Skittish vervet monkeys, with adorable black faces, stay away from the bigger and territorial baboons. All too soon we were off to Malawi. It may be known as the place where Madonna adopts orphans, but it is much more. Like neighboring Zambia, Malawi is a nation of friendly people, religious by nature. Those in the countryside live mostly in thatched huts in small villages with tribal chiefs who lead the community. Safaris were particularly exciting here because Majete National Park is being revitalized. It was in disarray by 2003, ravaged by the locals for food and fuel and by foraging elephants. Stripped of some of the game that make such reserves impressive,

Majete needed help to reclaim its prominence. Thanks to Africa that works with the government, Majete National Park has been re-populated with many kinds of animals. Most exciting was the reintroduction of lions. “What’s been missing up to now has been the big game experience,” says Dorian Tilbury, Field Operations Manager for African Parks, Majete. Now it is here. Here, too, is the ever-present, totally ugly warthog. It cavorts along with its babies. These critters have the mane of a horse, the body of a bulldog, tusks, and a scrawny bizarre tail. Oh my! the sea. Lake Malawi, where we journeyed next, is the place from which almost all of our tropical and exotic, they are on display for snorkelers. Pumalani, where I stayed, offered snorkel excursions on

Lake Malawi, the third largest lake in Africa. This is a Robin Pope Safari Property, designed for R&R. Water sports and a swimming pool are “on offer,” as they said. Another activity: sailing in an old-fashioned dhow on the lake, as a hot red-orange sun set. Quintessential Africa! Soon it was time to reach Lake Malawi from a different side… right across from Mozambique on Likoma Island. Kaya Mawa is a prize-winning resort, as were all the places we stayed. It is right on the beach of Lake Malawi. Accommodations are unique and individual. But something else is going on here, too. Susie Lightfoot, whose husband owns Kaya Mawa, has started a workshop to provide full employment and help locals get skills. Folks get in-house training in sewing and learn tailoring. Most of the workers are single mothers, some of robes from pieces of bold-patterned African fabrics are for sale. Men at treadle sewing machines create napkins, placemats, and spreads. All these get adorned with shells and beads to stylish advantage. Everything is handmade and good-looking. Speaking of beauty, I won’t forget pinkorange sunsets, the warmth of the people, or the pleasures of being so close to creatures, both great and small, on their home turf. I’m so glad I got to “hobnob”

Sipping the Life in the Finger Lakes:

By Demetra M. Pappas

Mother’s Day Wine and Spas

To get away (literally) from the predictable roses and spring blooms for Mother’s Day, consider a wine/spa themed getaway in the Finger Lakes. This May, Finger Lakes Wine Country, in partnership with Finger Lakes Lakes Wine Month launching in May 2013. Get a designated driver and tootle around and tutorials. A wine/spa themed getaway could be designed for the mom in your life. The scenic, well-appointed villa resort Geneva on the Lake (genevaonthelake. com) is on the shore of Seneca Lake, with 10 acres of formal gardens, a terrace and classical sculptures. Having been there in both summer and winter, I can attest to the immediate restful qualities of its beauty (and friendly service – staff brought to my Stickley-decorated room my favorite tea with milk, honey and sugar sticks before the kitchen arrived!). Don’t miss a chance to attend one of prize-winning chef Carl Bray’s Finger Lakes wine paired dinners,

which I was keen to do after judging a culinary contest he was in (and deservedly won). Also visit the lake-front New York Wine and Culinary Center (nywcc.com), which has wine/cooking classes and a bistro with Finger Lakes wines and locally sourced New York State ingredients in season. Between tootling around wineries, spa time is a great relaxer. Canandaigua’s Park West Spa (parkwesthairdesignandspa. com) has a “Wine Tour Spa Package,” including a wine wrap body treatment, champagne facial and grape peel pedicure given by an amiable and informative staff. Going from hoot to haute, historic Bellhurst Castle’s (bellhurst.com) Isabella Spa has an 80-minute treatment in honor of the namesake, which uses a variety of techniques from scrubs to aromatherapy to stretches. Some cannot get to the Finger Lakes, so here are some other suggestions. Kate Harvey and Karl Zinsmeister’s luscious

book (with photos by Noah Zinsmeister), Finger Lakes Feast; 101 Delicious Recipes from New York’s Hotspot for Wholesome Local Foods McBooks Press, 2012) has recipes from listed contributing restaurants and an informative historical introduction with topographical (as well as culinary and winery) information. Walter Scheib, who enchantingly moderated the recent inaugural Wine Symposium of the Finger Lakes, has a wonderful book (in which he includes fond tales of his mother, a former and love food), White House Chef: Eleven Years, Two Presidents, One Kitchen a wine tasting is the ticket, consider the French Institute/Alliance Francaise (www. Though summer in the city can turn New York City weekends into a ghost town as Manhattanites flock East and South to the beaches or North to the countryside, there are plenty of reasons to enjoy an emptied city for a Manhattan Staycation. As most New Yorkers tend to spend 80% of their time within a 10 block radius, check out a new neighborhood can seem like a mini vacation. Step back in time at the newly opened Jade Hotel is a gem tucked away in the West Village that embodies the vibrant and historical ambiance of this charming neighborhood. CHERISHED LUXURY: MANHATTAN’S Whether it’s relaxing on a bench in Central Park or drinking an exotic cocktail at a trendy hotel’s rooftop bar, New Yorkers truly savor being outdoors during the warm weather months. Many fortunate city denizens can escape to the outdoors without ever having to set foot outside of their homes. They soak up the sun and nature’s beauty right on their own private outdoor spaces. In Manhattan, outdoor space is an urban luxury that comes in an assortment of sizes, shapes and styles. In today’s tight real estate market, outdoor space adds 10-20% to a property’s value and for many busy New Yorkers, the convenience of not having to leave their apartments to catch a breath of fresh air is simply priceless. It’s no secret that large private outdoor spaces are rare in Manhattan and depending on type and size, can be incredibly expensive. Exclusivity is what makes over-sized terraces and private rooftops so coveted and now a New Yorker’s obsession. In this town, there is surely no shortage of luxurious and grand apartments with private outdoor spaces that are as equally impressive as their interiors. The late society tastemaker and philanthropist Evelyn Lauder was known for the large and stunning terrace gardens that she cultivated at her elegant residence overlooking Central Park. Knowing that outdoor space is so valuable, many lucky owners feel obliged to transform these blank canvases into breathtaking natural environments or peaceful outdoor living sanctuaries. Luckily, they can always hire talented landscape architects or designers to help them transform a lifeless space into an enviable urban oasis. When it comes to terraces and rooftops, the design possibilities are endless. However, Manhattan’s buildings have stringent guidelines on what can go on a terrace or roof. Therefore, before you commence any projects, you need to evaluate the outdoor space’s structural integrity, review your building’s weight

In the Black By Miriam Silverberg

How do you feel about black? I ask because I just returned from walking along Madison Avenue and lunching at a rather upscale restaurant and I feel as if I just returned from a mass funeral. So many women say they’ll wear any color as long as it’s black. I don’t understand this. When everyone wears black it gets rather depressing. How can you feel cheerful when you look so drab? And in this economy feeling cheerful is essential. I know black makes you look thinner but so many of the women living in black are already so thin. Black is not an easy color to wear. It drains color from the face and

makes you look washed out. I like black and have a lot of black in my wardrobe just as I like red or any other color and have a lot in my closets. I just don›t wear black to the exclusion of any other color. Recently, I lunched with two women who both wore black head to toe. I wore a white skirt, blue-and-white striped top, gold belt and jewelry. They both commented on how nice I looked and wondered aloud whether they should stop wearing unrelieved black. They then decided that no, they would feel uncomfortable in any other color. I asked why, and their answer was, “Well, everyone wears black.” As if they were little lambs how very New York of them.

Everyone wearing black is the best reason I can think of for not wearing it I hate looking like everyone else. I love my LBD and can’t imagine being well-dressed without a few. But constantly? wearing black or any other color, try breaking print. You can try a scarf in another color or carrying a brightly colored purse. You, who always wear the same color or style - try wearing something different and write to me letting me know how you feel. I bet you’ll be surprised by how different you’ll

Fact Based Shows Land on

Broadway By Barry Bassis In the police t.v. series, Dragnet,” Sgt. Joe Friday used to say he wanted to hear “just the facts.” Three new Broadway shows are derived from actual events, but stray from the truth to varying degrees and two even add song and dance. Nora Ephron’s “Lucky Guy” is a salute to the late Mike McAlary, a colorful New York newspaperman. McAlary started covering to Newsday to become a police reporter. His big chance came when his idol, columnist Jimmy Breslin (who is often mentioned but doesn’t appear as a character in the play), left the Daily News and McAlary replaced him. He linked up with attorney Eddie Hayes, who helped elevate McAlary’s salary and his ego. However, he almost died in a car accident when he was driving while intoxicated. The play also explores a moral low point of the reporter’s career when he mistakenly claimed that a rape victim had fabricated her account. This led to condemnation from a number of his fellow reporters. McAlary’s career ended on a high note when he won a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Abner Louima case. Unfortunately, he died of cancer soon afterward. Ephron, who died last year, had a fruitful relationship with Tom Hanks (“Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail”) and

lack charisma on stage, but Hanks is just as likeable, more so than the man he portrays. Under the astute direction of George C. Wolfe, the play moves at a lightning pace. The whole cast is praiseworthy, including Peter Gerety and Courtney B. Vance as two of McAlary’s editors, Christopher McDonald as Hayes, and Maura Tierney as McAlary’s wife. “Lucky Guy” is running at the Broadhurst Theatre (235 W. 44th St., 212-239-6200, telecharge.com) until July 3rd. An episode of the BBC’s “Trouble At The Top” reality show focused on the owner of a shoe-making factory in Northamptonshire, England. Shoe sales had plummeted as a result of cheap imports. The business was saved when the owner discovered a niche market and started making footwear for transvestites. The story was eventually made

about Texans in an endurance contest in which they must keep one hand on a pickup truck. There was an impressive array of talent behind the show: the script is by Doug Wright, the songs by Amanda Green and Trey Anastasio (of Phish), Neil Pepe directed and Sergio Trujillo choreographed. The cast contest is absurd but the desperate characters are treated sympathetically and there are some winning songs. The show has closed but the original cast album is coming out on

is now an upbeat Broadway musical. While it’s not as funny or as touching as “La Cage aux Folles,” the show is a crowd-pleaser with a witty script by Harvey Fierstein (who was also the writer of “La Cage”) and enjoyable songs (in a variety of styles) by Cyndi Lauper. as the cross-dressing savior of the business. Annaleigh Ashford has a comic number that should earn her a Tony nomination for best supporting actress. Jerry Mitchell’s direction and choreography maintain the laughs and the Al Hirschfeld Theatre (302 W 45th St.; telecharge.com).

By Barry Bassis Megan Hilty is a star of the musical TV drama series “Smash,” but theatergoers know her as the Broadway star of “Wicked” and “9 To 5: The Musical.” For her debut solo CD, “It Happens All The Time,” she decided to show a different side of her talent. The album contains no theater songs. Instead, it’s a contemporary pop oriented exploration of break-up songs by Aimee Mann, Sara Bareilles, Bruno Mars, Damien Rice, Hogarth, Glen Ballard, Ne-Yo and Carrie Underwood. She lets out all the stops on “Be a Man,” urging her mate to have the nerve to tell her the relationship is over. The mood of the album is not completely downbeat. On “Walk Away” (co-written by Ne-Yo, Carrie Underwood and Luke Laird), she overcomes the painful breakup. The theme of new beginnings is continued with “No Cure” on which co-writer Hogarth joins Hilty on vocals. Hilty sounds convincing on this material, but it represents only part of her range. Last year, Hilty received rave reviews in the Encores! production of the classic musical “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” Fortunately, the cast recorded the Jule Styne/Leo Robin

songs. Hilty plays Lorelei Lee (the Marilyn sing “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” and “I’m Just a Little Girl from Little Rock.” This is the funny, brassy side of Hilty’s talent. The equally estimable Rachel York plays her buddy on the Encores CD with Clarke Thorell, and Aaron Lazar in the male leads. “70s and Sunny, Live at 54 Below” is Andrea McArdle’s cabaret act, a reminiscence of the decade in which she became a 13-year old star in “Annie.” Photos on the liner notes show her during that era with such luminaries as Muhammad Ali, Barbra Streisand and Michael Jackson and she also speaks about her experiences on the CD. Of course, she includes “Tomorrow” but performs songs from other Broadway shows (e.g., by Stephen Schwartz, Jerry Herman and Marvin Hamlisch) as well as from the pop world (e.g., Billy Joel and Peter Allen). McArdle’s name will always be associated developed into a charming adult performer. “Gifts” is Christiane Noll’s live album from 54 Below, where she appeared during the run of “Chaplin” (in which she played the silent star’s troubled mother). Her act is basically a musical autobiography, including

piano accompaniment is by Ross Patterson. Noll pretty much sticks to Broadway songs (shows she appeared in such as “Ragtime” and “Jekyll and Hyde” as well as some she didn’t (Annie’s “Hard Knock Life,” “What I Did For Love” from “A Chorus Line” and “Some Enchanted Evening” from “South gems from “Baby,” “Once on This Island” and “Barnum.” She sings “The Sound of Music” in a pure soprano and tells a funny story about performing it at an audition for Julie Andrews. “Total Faith: Live from the Royal Room at the Colony” is the cabaret act of the delightful Faith Prince. She performs songs from shows she appeared in (“Guys & Dolls,” “The King & I,” “Bells Are Ringing” and the underappreciated “The Catered Affair”). She also sings “Somewhere That’s Green/ Suddenly Seymour” from “Little Shop of Horrors” and tells how she was offered the original female lead but had to turn it down, though she appeared later in the run. She does two songs about people with tattoos. While McArdle wants to go back to the 1970’s, Prince sings “Take Me Back to the Eighties.” The Colony is in Florida, but Prince still sings a couple of New York songs and ends with a tender piece by her pianist-

When Jose Santiago takes to the stage, no matter what genre of music you prefer, you can’t help but be drawn in. A producer, songwriter, emcee and performer, Jose is a New York based artist with a soulful sound and star-studded portfolio to go with it. Since 2004, Jose has been working his way through the underground music scene, both performing and writing music for a diverse array of artists. Touring with bands such as LMFAO and Jamie Drastik, Jose garnered experience appearing in showcases across the nation, including ATL’s “Make it or Break it Tour.” He has shared the stage with artists such as Jadakiss, Stylez P, Swizz Beatz, FloRida, Tony Sunshine, and Jim Jones. His multi-faceted sound, as well as an ability to apply his expertise to so many different areas of music, makes Jose a truly compelling artist. However, it is his steadfast work ethic that has important it is to support talent with hard work. A particularly successful project that Jose is proud of is “Thank You. More Please,” which was written and produced for young talent Stella Santana, daughter of the legendary Carlos Santana. Their collaboration captured the interest of Vogue Magazine, and since then has been garnering acclaim from music critics and lifestyle enthusiasts alike. Most recently, his newest single, “Let It Go,” is on it’s way to becoming an international club anthem getting overseas airplay in Germany, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Jose thrives on creativity; his music embodies a combination of his personal style, sound and cerebral process. “I’ve literally been mid-conversation with someone and suddenly stopped listening to them because I had to reach for my iPhone to jot down a slick metaphor, or a catchy hook that magically popped into my head….it’s kind of rude of me but I’m and artist. When artists get inspired, at least for me, everything gets blocked out and bringing an idea to life, immediately,” explains Jose. Jose recently performed with Stella Santana at Toshi’s Living Room for Resident Magazine’s Tasting New York Fundraiser hosted by Ernie Anastos, and regularly appears all over the New York area at venues including Brooklyn’ B66 Lounge, the Dorothy Jones Theater, and the Gallery Bar. He’ll be performing at New York’s legendary music online at iamjosesantiago.com. Whether he’s writing, producing, or performing himself, Jose is an incredibly creative talent whose passion is unbridled and whose mission is clear. Expect to hear and see more of Jose in the future as he makes his way

We Lo e You Mom As recently reported in the Daily Mail in the UK, children spend on average approx. $40 on Mom for Mothers Day. This is twice the amount they spend on their Dads for Fathers Day – with many forgetting Fathers Day altogether! According to an NRF survey, Americans spend on average $150 total spending expected to exceed $18 billion this year. This makes Mothers Day the fourth most lucrative holiday after Christmas, Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day.

If you know your mom has a little luxury that she really enjoys – maybe a particular perfume, candies, chocolates or other item – these are great gifts to celebrate Mothers Day. On the bigger scale – the gift of connectivity and communication can be a life changer. The uptake of tablets amongst adults 65 and older is extremely high – higher than any other age group. Whereas a full-blown laptop can be a challenge for some folks who did not grow up with computers, almost all are able to master the interface of a tablet. This is also the gift of communication. Lighting Artist By Kayla Baken Light, in its many facets, is to Bentley Meeker what music is to Philip Glass. An original visionary, Meeker has garnered wide acclaim for his unparalleled ability to use light as a means to convert physical spaces into illuminating works of art. “Light is the most powerful tool we have to create any feeling,” says Meeker. Growing up between the United States, the Bahamas and Canada, Meeker was exposed to various forms of light around the world. When he moved to Manhattan at the age of 14, his passion was ignited. While living in the city he was constantly exposed to illumination; it was all around him. This love affair with light eventually translated into his own company, Bentley Meeker Lighting and Staging, Inc., which is now recognized as one of the leading lighting Meeker and his team have lent their talents to coveted events at some of NYC’s most prominent venues including the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Natural History, and Lincoln

from the cramped tiny eateries, with hard to get reservations, serving creative riffs on circles, savvy fashionable, men and women have been seen gleefully consuming steak. After all, steakhouses are a historic pillar of New York dining. Perhaps we are all returning to the good old days when you smiled in anticipation of the mouth watering edible and proudly blurted out – ‘ I’ll have a steak.’

Desmond’s Steakhouse, a new addition on the scene is hoping to cash in with the increased craving beef. This two hundred forty seven seat, eight thousand square foot eatery at Seventh Avenue and thirty eighth Street is owner Paul Hurley’s most ambitious project to date. Passersby who pause to look at the menu are often greeted by a Hey Mambo host happy to discuss the choices with them and invite them inside. The staff has earned an early reputation for friendliness that, in other eateries, wears off after the opening. Here they have not forgotten that without diners the doors close and that atmosphere has continued unabated since opening day. There is a comprehensive wine list with choices for every taste and every wallet.

Opening in January it has developed a loyal clientele of locals who have come in and given kudos to such dishes as roasted chicken with au jus, spinach and mashed potatoes. Of course there is also steak and potatoes for those who enjoy basic, solid and pleasing meals. Try the grilled sirloin with pepper and fries. Starters include rosemary focaccia with balsamic (thick and sweet with almost a honey taste) vinegar, olive oil and olives. Beyond basic dishes Hey Mambo also offers a fusion of Italian, French and Mediterranean choices. An especially interesting dish is the Bocotini with shredded short ribs, onions and Bolognese sauce. Diners have commented that the pasta was “perfectly al dente” and the meat almost melted in the mouth. Fish dishes are a house specialty as is the risotto. Chocolate cake has guests wishing they had more room to enjoy it. A sweet

New York has, arguably, the most diverse offerings of ethnic and regional dining options any where in the world. In the past such cuisines offered only a handful of choices such as Indian dishes with spice that would make Andrew Zimmern’s taste buds cry “Uncle.” That no longer is the case as experiences chefs have developed offerings designed to excite the palate of even the most sophisticated diner. The East Village’s Malai Marke is one such example of evolving ethnic retaurants. East Sixth Street where the restaurant is located, has come a long way from its early days as a Jewish enclave in tenements and streets teeming with pushcarts and local shops. It is now a desirable location for those seeking a wonderful culinary experience. Malaia Marke has been described as a welldecorated, particularly romantic, particularly fresh and particularly delicious restaurant. The waitstaff has been recognized as being knowledgeable and willing to offer suggestions. They are there to help, serve and

hovering over diners. Topping popularity on the menu are the puffy luchi bread. The waitstaff never hurries diners and even leaves plates with sauce untouched so that diners can continue to enjoy as they soak it up with crisp roti. Indian restaurants have learned that not so long was a hallmark of Indian food. At another restaurant in an exclusive hotel, a diner had taken a mouthful of a curry dish and sat there with smoke coming out of her nostrils. The imperious waiter looked at her and commented: “It does take some getting used to.” That will never happen at Malai Marke. Dishes are prepared and serve dto the diner’s taste. The concern here is that the diner should have a pleasurable experience and fully enjoy the meal. Malai Marke’s Chennai goat curry is spiced but not in a manner as to numb the senses and taste buds. And if you would like a

milder version, just ask for it. Chicken with coconut, peanuts and poppyseeds was well prepared. Meat dishes are tender, tasty and com with generous portions. food lovers of all stripes. An elegant and cozy atmosphere makes them a popular meeting place where friendship reigns supreme. You can’t imagine eating boring food in this splashy but sophisticated kitchen that elevates it to an entertaining and inviting experience. Appetizers like Octopus “Pizzaiola,” sautéed with tomatoes, capers, olives and anchovies and Cozze “Fra Diavola,” (mussels) sautéed in spicy tomato sauce and basil set the tone for this jewel of the Upper East Side. A personal favorite of mine was the succulent Beef Carpaccio, which was thinly sliced and dressed with Balsamic vinegar, lemon, and capers over a bed of arugula and topped with Parmesan cheese.

The pastas, as one might expect, were excellent. My guest and I very much enjoyed the Paglia Fient Trevizana (the name alone is a mouthful). It was a white Wild mushroom with sweet pees, prosciutto, radicchio and parmesan – it was so heavenly that I ordered a second dish so that I could have more for lunch! Another hit was the Ravioli l’Arogusto. It was stuffed with fresh lobster and a brown butter, sage and lobster sauce; the dough of the ravioli was fresh and the cream was just the right consistency to bind everything together. As with everything they do, the entrees and desserts were well crafted and delicious. In addition, we loved the extensive (and heavily Italian) wine. Go for a lovely night out with happy that you did so! It’s become one of my regular spots and I’m sure I’ll run into you

I’d LAST WORD

RATHER

WALK

BY MIRIAM SILVERBERG

Living in Manhattan, I walk everywhere. Very few Manhattanites can make that claim. I used to live in Queens and the primary reason I moved to Manhattan was not to have to use the subway. It’s the most wonderful feeling to pass a subway station and just pass it---not have to walk down those steps to doom. I’ve always thought that every subway station should have a sign overhead, “all who enter here abandon hope.” I feel this way because I can’t forget the bad, old days when the subways were really dangerous and I can’t wrap my head around the idea that subways have changed. Anyway, most people don’t walk. They say they do but they really don’t. You ask the average New Yorker if they do much walking

Resident May 2013

and the answer you’ll get will be something like this. “Oh, I walk everywhere. Unless, of course, it’s raining, it’s snowing, it’s too hot, it’s too cold, it’s too late, I’m too tired or else I’m not in the mood. But except for that I walk everywhere.” Which, of course, means they walk nowhere. When I say I walk everywhere, I mean I walk everywhere. I allow for very few exceptions. I live in the East 50s and had a restaurant client opposite City Hall. According to Google, that’s four miles each way. I walked back and forth (eight miles) almost every time I lunched there. Once I did make an exception. It was raining and very windy. I walked out of my building and a gust of wind blew my umbrella inside out. I decided

umbrella steady so I went back inside, did some work and left an hour later and took the subway. I seldom take the bus, either. The only time I do is to go to the Cloisters. During the spring and summer I love takng the Madison Avenue bus to the Cloisters at 190th and the Hudson. By bus it’s well over an hour and even I wouldn’t think of walking there. But I’m always so surprised when I see young, able-bodied peope get on the bus and then get off two stops later. That’s four blocks and they can’t walk it? Walking is the best exercise and the best way to really see and enjoy the City. No one has ever been injured
